BELLINGHAM — Owner Mike Buchholz started Custom Closets and Bedrooms in 1990. Today his daughter Jana Miesuk and granddaughter Taylor have joined the team to serve northwest Washington from King County to the U.S.-Canada border.

The design showroom has custombuilt closets and organizers, Murphy beds and wall beds, custom garage cabinets and work benches, interlocking garage floor tiles, all a display of what Custom Closets and Bedrooms can do for home and office spaces. Design team members will sit with clients in their homes or the design center to put actual dimensions into 3D programs on laptops, or project onto a large screen

before starting projects to look at additions and changes.

“So many have a hard time visualizing,” Buchholz said. “They can see (with us) exactly what it looks like before building.”

but attaches to a wall, the Cabinet Bed is freestanding as a beautiful piece of furniture.

“It’s easy to move and can go from apartment to apartment or from room to room,” he said. The Cabinet Bed is available in the sizes of twin, double and queen.

The wood is free of formaldehyde and has different painted finishes as options.

“We guarantee all our products as long as you own your home,” Buchholz said. “Our installers take off their shoes, vacuum up behind them and we offer outstanding customer service.”

Northwest Recycling has a container for almost everything Company to display ‘job shack’ at the show

WHATCOM — Northwest Recycling will be making an appearance at the Home & Garden Show this year, bringing an array of containers that fit a variety of needs for businesses and the general public.

According to dispatcher Chad Bernhardt, the company’s feature at the Lynden event will be their job shack — a 20-footlong, fully insulated container with windows, a locking door and outlets that is perfect for people who are going through a home remodel, wanting to build homes or other purposes.

“We think that’s going to be the eyecatcher for people and we’re going to put that right out in front,” Bernhardt said. “It’s going to be interesting to see if people are really intrigued with (the job shack).”

Job shacks are also commonly used for office space and employee break rooms.

Regular storage containers, which can

be used to store materials and to work out of, will also be on display at the show. All containers are available to rent or buy and are delivered by the company. Containers, which come in a standard height of six feet, eight inches, range in length from 10 to 40 feet.

“When people are remodeling houses or having homes built or other things like that, storage containers can be really handy,” Bernhardt said. “If people don’t have a place to work out of, the containers work well for those purposes.”

In terms of recycling, the company will show off a scrap metal bin to exhibit a variety of recyclable household items. This will serve as an educational display, giving people going through a home remodel an opportunity to see which items can be recycled.

The bin will have “things like stoves, water heaters, stainless steel sinks and other things like that,” Bernhardt said.

Northwest Recycling, operating out of Bellingham and serving all of Whatcom County, offers services in general and commercial recycling along with container rental and steel road plates.

Morris Floors & Interiors doubles home show space Business has also grown in 11 years locally

LYNDEN — ­ Morris Floors & Interiors will be at the home show for a second year, and in twice the space of before.

Last year was a good first chance at getting more exposure to the public, directly resulting in several jobs, said Mike Spidell, Morris salesman.

“We were working hard to get our name out there and we want to let (people) know what we are able to do,” he said.

What Morris does has broadened out greatly in 11 years locally, the last five at 6934 Guide Meridian Rd. From a focus on hardwood floors, the interest of customers in other aspects of interior design has led the business to open up into all types of flooring, trim, countertops, window coverings and, most recently, cabinets.

The key thing, however, remains what Brandon Morris, founder and CEO, emphasized in the first place: quality work and satisfied customers.

“Morris Floors and Interiors has built its reputation on establishing a personal connection with our customers. The strength of our home remodeling business is our meaningful customer relationships,” Morris says on the company website (https:// morrisfloorsandinteriors.com and also on Facebook).

That means one satisfied customers refers another, and in that way the business has grown.

The full-time staff in installation and sales is now six, and it’s really necessary to find a bigger space for operating and for walk-in traffic, Spidell says.

Step into the current location to check out an abundance of samples of the products in hardwood, carpet, laminate, tile, vinyl, counter tops and window coverings.

Morris also works with other licensed general contractors to do some jobs, businesses “that we have worked with for years and we know and trust,” Spidell said.

Back to the hardwood floors, the skills of restoration — resanding, finishing and staining, and sometimes replacing and patching — are ones to which both Spidell and Morris bring years of experience so that in the end “we will stand behind our work.”

Of course, they will do free site visits to evaluate and give a bid on a project.

WHATCOM — Of all the things to look for at the Home & Garden Show, Pizza’zza takes the (pizza) pie to a whole new level.

The business, which prides itself on sourcing locally, started in 2003 but was later purchased by current owner Will Annett in 2007. Annett, who had been in the restaurant business for many years, said he was often conflicted between his home and work life.

“My personal life was eating organic local food, what I’m passionate about,” he said.

“I’d go to work and cook food that wasn’t necessarily my passion. Very few

Annett had heard of a manager position open with Pizza’zza, a business that was up for sale at the time. He was hired and three months later decided to purchase the business that had ideals already aligned to what Annett envisioned for himself.

“(The business) already had a local theme,” Annett said. “A lot of their products were sourced locally. So I thought it was a good start and then I just saw so much potential in it and lots of room to grow.”

Growing is what the business has been doing. Pizza’zza is currently expanding the Fairhaven location and last year the pizza business launched another venture — mobile dining.

“I had this harebrained idea to stick a woodstone oven in a trailer and move it around and cook pizzas in it,” Annett said. The woodstone oven, which weighs over 3,000 pounds, is a signature of the local eatery.

After two years of planning, working to meet state Labor and Industries regulations and with help from TriVan Truck Body in Ferndale, which created the trailer, the plans came to fruition. And now the trailer is coming, along with locally sourced and grown ingredients

My Garden Nursery, all things plants Only three years old, being in show is part of nursery's growth plan

WHATCOM — The folks at My Garden Nursery are making a return appearance to the Home & Garden Show.

They’ll be bringing the colorful ceramic mushrooms that were popular with show attendees last year, along with various fragrant plants. There’s a coupon for $5 off on roses and a chance to win a $75 gift certificate for those who stop by, owner Jenny Gunderson said.

My Garden Nursery first opened at its current Bellingham location on April Fools Day 2015. Going into a third season of business, the plant (and all-things-related) store has hosted numerous seminars, held a summer solstice soiree and raised around $7,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society, a cause close to Jenny and co-owner Bill Raynolds.

“We’ve gone from a nursery in its beginning stages to a full-fledged nursery with all sorts of fabulous things,” Gunderson said.

New for the business is a partnership with Sound Landscaping, a Bellingham landscaping company that will allow Gunderson to offer various bulk soils. “We get asked all the time if we still sell the soils and the gravel,” she said.

The Glass Guru is three years into a local franchise Eric Brown can help with getting rid of condensation in your windows, too

LYNDEN — The Glass Guru is a national franchise of “neighborhood professionals” for glass and screen repairs and replacement in commercial and residential settings.

Local franchise owner Eric Brown relocated to Whatcom County from Hawaii three years ago. Having worked in commercial hotel construction with a focus on glasswork, he found that The Glass Guru gave him the ability to have his own business with the support of a larger business.

“It allows me to run it like my own business and keep up the standards,” he said.

With a visit to the Home & Garden Show his first year here, his team took last

year off.

In the booth this year they will focus on moisture removal. While some homeowners may not be able to replace windows, The Glass Guru team has a program for both removing a moisture problem and doing so affordably. They drill a small hole in the glass to get inside the panes, clean with special solutions, and then apply patented micro vents.

The result is both removed condensation and better views.

Brown offers a simple tip to homeowners: It is easy to see condensation building up along windows when we cook or shower, with resulting dark mildew. Even in the winter months, he advises opening windows for about 10 minutes to air out the inside.

A discount on glass services will be offered during the show, Brown said. Discounts are also available to builders.

In garage door business, Overhead Door Company goes way back First started in 1959, Bellingham company sells doors made by product inventor

BELLINGHAM — Overhead Door Corporation has been in the garage door business since the early 1920s, and Overhead Door Company of Bellingham is Whatcom County’s outlet for the garage doors sold by the company that pioneered them.

“We are the inventors of the first sectional, upward-acting door,” said Jack Johnson, owner of Bellingham’s Overhead Door Company, first opened in 1959.

“We’re a distributor for Overhead Door Corporation, and that’s pretty much the primary product that we sell.”

For the BIA Home & Garden Show, Overhead Door Company will bring a full-size upward-acting garage door that actually functions using an electric motor.

Overhead Door occupies several booth spaces to accommodate its large display.

“We have four booths, right when you walk through the front doors,” Johnson said. “We have pretty much the whole showroom. We bring it there.”

Hand samples will be available, along with a large safety display of stickers that need to be on garage doors.

“We bring a lot of educational stuff,” Johnson said. “That’s the big thing that we like about the home show: educating people about our industry. People can use us for products or services, and if not that, for more awareness.”

Overhead Door’s upward-acting garage doors can be seen at the newly remodeled Lynden Lube on Guide Meridian Road.
