Everson man’s book details Sir Francis Drake’s supposed landing in Bellingham Photographs taken 14 years ago led to research on 16th century voyage By Brent Lindquist reporter@lyndentribune.com

EVERSON — On a photography trip to Bellingham’s Post Point about 15 years ago, Everson’s Laird Nelson discovered something that astounded him.    With his initial interest piqued by his background as a commercial fisherman, Nelson was researching the Spanish names of the islands in the area. On one of his trips,

he found a rock carving of an index finger pointing west.    “I could still make out the date on it from the pictures I took,” Nelson said.    According to the date on the carving, he said, it’s about 430 years old, and through a great deal of research detailed in his book “Port of the Dragon: The Lost Harbor of Sir Francis Drake,” Nelson deduced that famed English privateer Sir Francis Drake had landed in Bellingham Bay.    The hand carving, Nelson said, is actually a smaller part of a much larger monument carved into a three-ton rock nearby, depicting Henry VII and his sixth wife, Catherine Parr.    Nelson said Drake covered more of the

On a photography trip to Post Point in 2000, Everson's Laird Nelson discovered rock carvings that he believes suggest that explorer Sir Francis Drake landed in Bellingham Bay on a voyage kept secret by Queen Elizabeth. His book, "Port of the Dragon," details these findings and his years of research on the subject. (Courtesy photos/Laird Nelson)

He returned to England with a ship called the Golden Hind, loaded with plundered Spanish treasure.    Drake was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I, the only child of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. However, Nelson said, he and his crew were sworn to secrecy under penalty of death, and the queen seized all of his travel logs, which Nelson said were never seen again. Furthermore, Elizabeth did not allow any publications of his voyage during her lifetime.    He said Elizabeth wanted to cover up the voyage because Drake had dedicated “Nova Albion,” the name he gave the new country he had discovered, to her father.    “My personal thought is that it has something to do with his monument,” Nelson said. “That was her realm, not her father’s, because she probably just didn’t want it to be known that he dedicated a new country to Henry VIII.”    Information did, however, leak out, Nelson said.    In “Port of the Dragon,” Nelson details Drake’s landing in three different bays in northwest Washington.    “I spell it all out in the book,” he said.    “Port of the Dragon: The Lost Harbor of Sir Francis Drake” is available at www.
