Best Large Business: Lynden Door Everything big started small somewhere, sometime. That somewhere for Lynden Door was right here in Lynden (with a little help from Canada) and that sometime was in 1978. While John Bargen entered the door industry in 1948 after a serious flood of the Fraser River in British Columbia prompted him to take up the challenge of replacing flood-damaged doors, that’s not where the Bargen story stops. Bargen soon turned his small carpentry shop into a door manufacturing business that expanded far beyond Yarrow, B.C. He moved his business to Richmond, B.C., and in 1965, John, with his partners, sold the door business to their biggest customer, woodworking giant Sauder Industries. After a return to construction came the big change that would spark Lynden Door: Bargen moved to Lynden and purchased a farm with timber off Minaker Road south of Sumas. John joined with newlywed son, Ted, to expand their business, opening Lynden Door in 1978 at the present site in west Lynden. “During the month of May, my dad and I along with some great helpers were constructing our first building for Lynden Door,” Ted wrote in company history. With the help of first employee Sal Biondolillo, who is now the company chaplain, work continued on the first building into the summer of 1978. “The vision of making doors was still only a dream as we did construction work during the day and rebuilt used glue-spreaders and Wadkin double-end Tenoners at night,” Ted wrote. Since that original building, Lynden Door has made a habit of expansion. Now the manufacturing facility comprises over 350,000 square feet of space on 52 acres off West Main Street, serving as a wholesale manufacturer of interior wood doors. Lynden Door, one of the largest interior door manufacturers in the United States, has the distinct position of creating every type of interior wood door sought on the market, from wood veneers to laminates to molded panels to hardboard. And they do it in major production runs right down to custom creations — all in the Lynden plant. The mix of commercial, residential and architectural creations positions Lynden Door in the market to expect and meet demand no matter whether the industry is booming at the time. As part of the Bargen vision, the success of Lynden Door helped meet the mission of the Bargen family support the creation of Cedar Springs Christian Retreat Center, a nonprofit organization on the original Sumas property. In 2015, Lynden Door expanded into Lynden’s downtown Historic Business District, starting work on opening a “collaboratory center” on Front Street. The new area, expected to open in early 2016, not only frees up office space for the several hundred employees at the Main Street site, but can allow about 15 employees to collaborate with a variety of partners and business associates. “We see it as a real opportunity to enable and inspire product and service innovations,” said John Ridder, Lynden Door senior vice president. “We envision multi-disciplinary groups gathering in an open setting and discussing issues that affect our business. Imagine an architect, several of our sales and production people, a multi-family building owner and a door pre-hanger having a conversation about indoor air quality,

ADA requirements and the changing demographic of American home owners. You can quickly see that it is a rich environment for discussion and solution engineering.” The space accommodates offices, but also displays samples and audio-visual materials designed to augment plant tours. Adding new space downtown wasn’t the only major change Lynden Door brought along in 2015. At the Main Street location the business debuted space for its Technic Training Center, a home for preparing high school students for jobs specializing in woodworking and manufacture. The first group of students is scheduled to go through the program in early 2016. John Slagle, program director, said Lynden Door plans to “help local students transition into local jobs.” The new 8,000-square-foot building will use hands-on equipment to carry on the desire of the Bargen family to have a more community educational and service impact. By working closely with the Lynden School District, teachers will collaborate with mentors so students can earn high school credit for time learning at the center. Eventually other schools will be included. Lynden Door represents a big business remaining tied to its small-town roots.

2015 Best of Lynden

Best New Business: Tractor Supply Community-based Tractor Supply Co. a good fit in Lynden    LYNDEN — Tractor Supply Company is a community-oriented business. Lynden is a community-oriented town.    The shared interests and values are a big reason why Tractor Supply Company’s transition into Lynden has gone so smoothly.    Tractor Supply opened its Lynden store on Aug. 1 at 1818 Front St., moving into a building that housed the Cost Cutter grocery store before being vacated in 2008. After a short renovation that began in May, Tractor Supply held its grand opening in Lynden and became the company’s fifth store in the state.    From the first day, Tractor Supply felt welcome and appreciated in Lynden, store manager Amy Decker said.    “One of the biggest things that we got from the customers is that they were very glad to have a store like ours coming in,” Decker said. “There was something up in Lynden that was missing and they are absolutely excited that we can come in and provide them with this type of store.”    Tractor Supply, as Decker points out, provides far more than simply tractor supplies. The store sells a vast array of products for the farm and rural lifestyle, including welding gates, animal feed bins, lawn and garden supplies, power tools, clothing, pet supplies, towing products

and more.    “Our biggest challenge is getting people to know that we’re here, what we carry and to get the word out to everybody that it’s not just tractor parts — we carry a lot of seed and animal products,” Decker said.    “The community has been absolutely wonderful when it comes to spreading the word that we are here and helping spread some of our policies and our programs that we do with our customers.”      Examples of such programs include bulk discounts and a “best price guarantee” where Tractor Supply will match any competitor’s price on any store-stocked item.    And beginning in the new year, Tractor Sup- Progress on making Tractor Supply what it is now really ply is going to host weekend events to involve the got going this spring. (Lynden Tribune) community, such as farmers markets in the parking lot, clinics run by 4-H and FFA groups, and animal swaps.    “We love the community involvement,” Decker said.    Shortly after opening, Tractor Supply donated sup“If we have a customer that wants to come in and sell their plies for the Northwest Washington Fair. “We got to be a chickens in the parking lot or swap them, we do our best part of that,” Decker said. “It’s really just been fun for all of us to get out in the community.” to help with those types of things.”

Tractor Supply has taken over what was a vacant former grocery store and given it life. (Lynden Tribune)
