Best Small Business: Manna Insurance Lynden startup incorporates friendship and giving into its business concept It’s the unforeseen that can throw a person off guard. When Daniel Vander Kooi, now Manna insurance agent and co-owner, was involved in an auto accident in 2009, he couldn’t have anticipated all that was to follow. After years in a lawsuit, Vander Kooi learned the importance of proper insurance coverage. “You learn really quickly it’s not always just about finding the cheapest option,” Vander Kooi said. “I learned about insurance first-hand and how to make sure we’re helping people through those situations.” Today the Manna Insurance Group, a small insurance agency in Lynden, practices sitting down with every client and taking the time to go over the best options and worstcase scenarios. “Every business and person is different,” he said. “We’re making sure we have that personal touch with clients and we’re connecting with them.” The small business of six employees started up last year. Vander Kooi had previously spent eight years as a youth pastor when he was first turned on to the insurance area by a former coach. Vander Kooi obtained his insurance license in 2010 and has been practicing since. “Our biggest thing is to be the positive influence and light in community,” Vander Kooi said about the Manna business philosophy. “To help raise young boys and girls to be equal citizens, it’s so much more than making a buck.” The business employs this philosophy in a practical way. When a potential customer is referred to the insurance agency

and gets an insurance quote, during the months of July to December Manna will donate $15 to the Gwendolyn Strong Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to increasing global awareness of spinal muscular atrophy. During the months of January to June, the same donation will be made to Eagle’s Nest International, which Vander Kooi has been volunteering with for years and is dear to his heart. In 2007 Vander Kooi traveled to Tijuana, Mexico, with a group of high school students during From left are Manna Insurance team members Adam Hoogerhyde, Nate Bosman, Daniel Vander his youth minister- Kooi, Kailey Bovenkamp and Kyle Boon. Best New Business: Overflow Taps Lynden pub has raised almost $7,000 already for charity: water nonprofit For the co-owners of Lynden’s Overflow Taps, serving beer is about bringing people together, with a charitable twist. Co-owners Jesse Nelson, Adam Stacey and Josh Libolt opened Overflow in February in the renewed Waples Mercantile Building with charity in mind. Twenty-five cents of each pint of beer sold is donated to clean water efforts in developing countries via the nonprofit charity: water. Read its stories at www.charitywater.org. “The community has helped raise almost $7,000 since we opened,” Nelson said. The first $6,000 raised by Overflow will be donated to fund a well in Malawi, Africa. Nelson said Overflow makes an effort to be as transparent as possible with its charity efforts, and part of that involves a relationship with charity: water itself, specifically with its founder, Scott Harrison. The Overflow Taps co-owners first connected due to a variety of circumstances. Stacey met Nelson through Libolt, Nelson’s brother-in-law. Nelson had previously worked in web design and marketing, and had been exploring the idea of transforming his company into one focused on social good. Stacey went to school at Western Washington University and worked as a brewer at Kombucha Town in Bellingham. “I just knew I wanted to do something with beer,” Stacey said. “And I knew I wanted to try and put something in Lynden, be-

cause it’s where I grew up.” Nelson was already on his way toward rebranding, so they decided to marry their different ideas, and Overflow Taps was born. Stacey said he loves serving beer to the community because of the way it brings people together. It isn’t uncommon to see big groups come into the pub and, before too long, join together. Part of Overflow’s popularity stems from its relationships with the other businesses in the Waples building. “Being in this building has been a huge contributing factor to our success,” Stacey said. Overflow encourages patrons to bring in food from other restaurants, and the Drizzle and Avenue Bread outlets in the building both deliver food directly to the pub, along with other downtown restaurants like Chandara House and JoFish Seafood & Grill. “It’s all about the relationships you build with those businesses,” Nelson said. Overflow pours beers from breweries based in Bellingham and the greater Pacific Northwest, along with craft beer, wine and cider from up and down the West Coast. There are usually about three or four local beers on tap. Overflow only stocks a single keg of each beer at a time, some of which last only two to four days. Once a keg is empty, Overflow rotates a new beer

In 2017, Overflow plans to give breweries an opportunity to give back as well. Aslan Brewing Company of Bellingham has already signed on to donate five cents of every pint of its beer sold at Overflow to charity: water. As for the future, Nelson, Stacey and

Libolt are exploring options for expanding their business, including the possibility of a Bellingham location, but nothing is set in stone yet. “We’ve been really happy with how our first year is going,” Stacey said. — Brent Lindquist
