n 2016 Lynden celebrated its 125th anniversary since officially becoming The Town of Lynden in 1891. Men grew beards again. A 1,250-foot-long strawberry shortcake was created — and eaten — along Front Street in June. And the annual parade featured bronze-looking “living statues” of the famous first couple of Lynden, Holden and Phoebe Judson.    The Lynden story is deeply embedded in the American story. Hardy and bold dreamers from many ethnic, religious and cultural traditions, eager for a place to call their own, became the settlers of the West and the Pacific Northwest. They first traveled by waterway or wagon train, then chose land that looked promising, cut down trees and planted crops, built homes and shops, farms, churches and schools.    The Judsons came in 1871 to the Nooksack River cabin of a Col. Patterson to care for his two mixed-race daughters, and on this gentle rise of land from the river, “Mother of Lynden” Phoebe Judson decided that she had indeed found her ideal home.    Other families soon followed: Hawley, O’Neil, Tremaine, Muenscher, Kildall, Klocke, Nelson. Many of these settlers had close relations with the native Salish people who

2

had lived in the area for generations.    Wlliam Lauckhart Sr. could be considered the first Dutchman to have put his roots down at Lynden, around 1883. But as eager immigrants heard of the mild climate and fertile soil here, a steady stream followed in the late 1890s and onward. Douwe J. Zylstra emerged as a key figure in selling land and aiding the early assimilation of his fellow Hollanders, who established Christian schools and Reformed churches.    The Dutch influence is still strongly seen in the Vander names of many citizens as well as replica windmills that anchor the historic downtown and Fairway Center retail areas.    For over 100 years now Lynden has been the home of Whatcom County’s fair. From putting the bounty of harvest on display streetside in the early days, the Northwest Washington Fair of today still retains the agricultural emphasis of farms showing their animals, 4-H kids vying for ribbons, and even a two-day PRCA rodeo.    In 1928 the building that would serve 80 years as City Hall was built; it is now transformed into the Judson Art Center. The core of what is now the Lynden Pioneer Museum began as the John Deere dealership for northwest Washington in 1917.    And the crowning centerpiece of downtown Lynden renewal is the Waples Mercantile Building, completed in 2015-16 with eateries, shops and a 35-room inn. The durable structure is a tribute to William Waples, who ran his venerable Lynden Department Store on site for over five decades.    In 2016 the city also celebrated winning first place in the America’s Main Street contest, and the $25,000 prize is helping to keep up all the colorful flower displays downtown.

ohn Deere gave farmers the company’s first-ever branded tractor in 1923, and it started a revolution. The Model D would become a staple for more than 30 years to follow.    Lynden’s North Washington Implement Co., known around town as “North Wash” for as long as it existed by that name, actually predated the Model D by a dozen years. Now known as Washington Tractor, the business that would become North Washington Implement was founded in 1911 by Abe Bauman at the site of the Thompson & Sons Blacksmithy, which happens to be the location today of the Lynden Pioneer Museum on Front Street.    Walter Craighead bought the Bauman Implement Co. in 1917 and renamed it North Washington Implement. He sold the company to John Spaan in 1922, about the time the John Deere Company had purchased Waterloo Boy Tractor, a precursor move to the John Deere staple Model D.    Washington Tractor remains in business 100 years later. Spaan sold North Washington Implement to Bernice Telgenhoff and Howard DeGraaff in the early 1970s, and in 1976 the building it occupied downtown was sold to the city, with North Washington Implement

moving west to the corner of Front and 19th streets.    Current owner Jim Hale was a half-owner of North Wash when DeGraaff passed away in 1990, and he purchased the majority of the company that year. In 1998, Hale moved the growing business to its current location on Evergreen Way near the Guide Meridian.    In 2010, North Wash merged with a number of other John Deere dealers statewide and was renamed and rebranded as Washington Tractor after John Deere pressured the company to grow. The merger debuted Nov. 1, 2010.    Hale said the change was difficult at the time, but ultimately positive.    “It was tough,” Hale said. “I was very happy having one store in one town. My hometown. A lot of things changed, but it was for the good. We have more access to more machinery, more expertise. We would have survived with one store, but not forever. It’s actually worked out well. I believe it’s worked out well for our longtime customers as well.”    The original merger included four families, and now boasts five. Including additional mergers that have taken place since 2010, Washington Tractor stretches across 12 locations statewide.

The Lynden KOA

Oostema Farmstead Inn

The Inn at Lynden

The options for staying in Lynden have grown! Whether it’s the traveler needing to rest up for the night or the local looking for a break from the norm, there’s a place for you.    The opening of The Inn at Lynden (360-746-8597, www.innatlynden.com) has led the charge. Located in a completely remodeled and historic downtown building, the inn offers 35 boutique rooms, each different from another. The inn has a mix of mezzanine-level and secondstory rooms, all with natural light filtering into the smartly furnished setting.    The heavy timber, brick and concrete of old (1914 original construction) was reclaimed and is now visible as the frame of the magnificent structure that William Waples operated as his Lynden Department Store for decades. A first round of conversion in the 1980s carried Delft Square forward until a fire in 2008 left everything in limbo. It took the imagination, work and investment of two couples, Matt and Teri Treat and Jeff and Debra McClure, to make Lynden very proud of the striking Waples Mercantile Building of today at Fourth and Front streets.    You can touch original concrete in your inn room, see the enormous rafters holding everything up, and step on slatted wood floors. But be assured, all amenities are as cozy and modern as you’ll want. The ground-level lobby features an oversized fireplace and leads to restaurants, a bookstore and more.   The Mill Inn (360-684-4341, www.themillinn.com) followed with its opening in September 2016 at another downtown Lynden attraction, the 72-foot Dutch-style windmill at Seventh and Front. Seven rooms are completely 6

redesigned and renovated in authentic Old World decor from their original 1987 construction.    Of course, it’s a treat to be able to say you slept in a windmill (three of the rooms)! In fact, the entire Dutch Village Mall complex has been carefully restored by its new owners and adds The Mill Bistro and Lounge at the base of the windmill. You might even find a play or musical going on in the community-run Claire vg Thomas Theatre at the far end of the canal.   The Lynden KOA (360-354-4772, koa.com/campgrounds/ lynden) has been a scenic camping treasure for many years. This restful retreat along ponds on Line Road attracts its RVers from both north and south, with proximity to Canada as well as local attractions. If you don’t have your own pull-up rig or tent, you can rent one of those cabins KOA is famous for. And you might just want to stick close to the popular pool on-site, or pedal a boat on the pond, to keep cool on a hot day. Apart from the new accommodations downtown, there’s still a variety of options throughout town. For those with Vacation Internationale membership, the championship 18-hole Homestead Golf & Country Club offers a golf getaway in the heart of town. A small windmill greets visitors to The Windmill Inn on the edge of town, located conveniently on State Route 539 (360-354-3424, www.windmillinnlynden.com). And Oostema Farmstead Inn offers a view of county life in this quaint bed and breakfast found on Northwood Road (360-815-1494, www.booking.com/hotel/us/oostema-farmstead-inn.html).

ust strike out around Lynden and you’ll know you’re in farm country. Your eyes will tell you. Maybe the smell (of hay, of course!) will tell you too.    Whatcom has the most dairy farms, about 100, of any county in Washington State, and the $350 million agriculture sector overall ranks us in the top 3 percent of farm counties in the nation.    The 130-foot Darigold milk drying facility has been a fixture on Lynden’s skyline since it was built in 2012-13 to replace an older one damaged by fire. This plant is capable of processing 4.2 million pounds of milk per day, trucked in from the Northwest Dairy Association cooperative farmers of the region. The milk powder from Lynden is widely sold in the world.    Local dairy farmers have recently become proactive in dealing with any water pollution they may be a part of. They agreed to the Portage Bay Partnership with the Lummi tribe, and paid $450,000 as well, in a pledge to work together in good faith to restore shellfish harvesting beds near the mouth of the Nooksack River.    Grass and corn grown for silage add to the beautiful panorama of fertile Lynden fields with Mount Baker in the distance.

Berries are also huge on the local agricultural scene. The county 2016 harvest of red raspberries was the largest ever, at 75 million pounds. Almost all of what’s grown here goes for processing into food products.    In turn, Whatcom’s red raspberry crop equates to at least two-thirds of the U.S. total each year. So local growers are well represented on the National Processed Raspberry Council that sometimes meets right in Lynden.    Not to be outdone, blueberries are surging in acreage (estimated at 7,000) here too. The yield from new plantings will only grow and may rival that of raspberries someday. Strawberries, once strong, are now a specialty crop to diversify the freezer stocks.    The entire local berry industry of about $85 million packs enough of an economic punch to bring the Small Fruit Conference and Lynden Ag Show to the Northwest Washington Fairgrounds each December.    Seed potatoes are another slice on the Whatcom food palate. Being isolated geographically from commercial growing areas, in this case, is an advantage for pursuing the best seed-stock quality. Other crops grown here are apples and nursery stock.    Put it all together and agriculture is tied into the past, present and future of the town. Photo Courtesy of Karen Mullen

10 years ago we became Dave’s • Fishing • Hunting • Camping • Much More! 360-354-5591 • www.davessports.com 1738 Front St., Lynden (Fairway Center)

What’s Borderview? Our small yet specialized team facilitates legal and efficient cross-border movement of hunting and sporting firearms, primarily between our U.S. office here in Lynden and our Canada office just across the border in Aldergrove, B.C.

Why Lynden?

Lindsey & Joel VanderHoek, Owners of BORDERVIEW

Simply put, we love Lynden. It’s where our roots are. Not only that, but we really believe it’s a great place to Live, Play and Work, as our Chamber of Commerce says. That’s why after locating our company in Seattle for two years, we moved back to Lynden in 2013. It’s where Dad and Grandpa have served local sportsmen for 60+ years — from Jude’s Sporting Goods to Dave’s Sports Shop. And now it’s where we serve thousands across the globe.

s Lynden’s downtown continues to flourish, so do the arts and entertainment the city has to offer. From the Lynden Pioneer Museum and the Jansen Art Center to the Claire vg Thomas Theatre, each adds its own flavor to a wide variety to choose from.   The Jansen Art Center, 321 Front St., is Lynden’s newest arts and entertainment outlet, opened in 2012. With its eclectic style, it has definitely added a different feel to the downtown area. What once was the Lynden City Hall and fire station from 1928 has been repurposed, and combined with another building, to form an anchor for the regional art community.    The Jansen Art Center is ultimately a one-stop place for art classes and rental of art studio space. Programs in music, painting, weaving, pottery, glass arts, children’s crafts, jewelry making, dance and much more (yoga, for example) happen from the early morning to during the day for homeschool students and seniors, as well as after school and in the evening. Along with classes that may run weeks at a time or simply a few hours in a workshop setting, the “J,” as it is dubbed, also hosts an array of live musical events including a new 2017 series of jazz and piano performances.    Four blocks walk west, the Claire vg Thomas Theatre hosts multiple performances throughout the year, combining local theater groups from Lynden and

surrounding cities. Recent updates to the cozy theatre space have helped actors and producers to more efficiently use it. New additions include the installation of a cyclorama — a 28-by-9 feet piece of seamless fabric that is used during productions to reflect light and set the mood of a scene.      Other local theatre options include the active school drama departments of both Lynden and Lynden Christian schools, each producing two quality shows throughout the year.   The Lynden Pioneer Museum, 217 Front St., adds its own part to the mix, with a regularly changing display of life in the West. The museum features one of the world’s largest collections of antique horse-drawn buggies, donated in the 1970s by Fred K. Polinder. The museum gives patrons a glimpse into the pioneer way of life and hosts a variety of themed events throughout the years.    Another staple on the Lynden arts scene is the Lynden Music Festival. Started eight years ago, the festival offers a community-wide spectacle of music every fall. The festival draws diverse, talented musicians from around the Pacific Northwest and even the world to our Northwest corner. With venues throughout the town, including the local coffee shops, schools, churches and Judson Hall auditorium, Lynden comes to life with the sounds of music through instrument and song.

he committed spirit of folks in Lynden can be seen in the abundance of churches located throughout town as well as the number of service clubs and organizations. The Mount Baker Rotary Club (mountbakerrotary.com) has been very instrumental in helping bring about facilities that are needed in the community, from ballfield bleachers to FFA barns. Two projects of the Lynden Lions Club (e-clubhouse.org/sites/lyndenwa) are to put up

sidewalk flags on all holidays and to honor veterans with a dinner program each November. Also active are the Lynden Noon Kiwanis (lyndenkiwanis.org) and Lynden Breakfast Kiwanis clubs. The aim of Toastmasters (lynden.toastmastersclubs.org) is to help anyone become a better public speaker. Troops, Scouts and Packs as well as church-based equivalents get youth active in the outdoors.

Children Fishing at the annual Fishing Derby

ith recreational opportunities at almost every corner, Lynden offers a bevy of fun and exciting activities, allowing you to enjoy the outdoors and natural beauty of Whatcom County. Whether you are looking to stay local or are up for a quick drive, there truly is an activity for everyone in and around Lynden.   From Berthusen Park, which allows you to go back in time and explore the history of a 19th century homestead, to the Mount Baker Ski Area, located just an hour east of Lynden and offering some of the best skiing in the lower 48 states, opportunities abound.    The county’s premier playground for kids, Million Smiles Playground can be found at 8460 Depot Rd. Entirely funded and built by the community, the imaginative play area is located within Lynden City Park adjacent to Fishtrap Creek, which is a great place for wading in summer. Million Smiles is home to the tallest outdoor slide in the region, inside a treehouse that stands 35 feet tall.   The Jim Kaemingk Sr. Trail is a paved path along Fishtrap Creek that connects the park to other parts of town. Hop on the trail for an eastward stroll by the creek and eventually end up at Bender Fields, which is the home for Lynden’s organized youth and community sports.

26

Berthusen Park, located just minutes west of town, offers playgrounds, fields, walking trails through the forest, a shotgun club, a remote-control aircraft club and a fully restored pioneer barn on what was the Hans Berthusen 1863 homestead. Visitors can spend hours taking in views of the native landscape, walking close to a creek and discovering the sight of the farmlands to the west. The 240-acre park is also home to the region’s largest tractor show (Aug. 2-5, 2017), although some antique steam engines and other attractions are on grounds year-round.   Patterson Park, just below downtown on South Seventh Street, is named after Colonel James Alexander Patterson, Lynden’s first white settler. It presents a pristine view of Mount Baker and the Twin Sisters to the east and includes a 9-hole disc golf course, which is open during the summer.   The Homestead Golf and Country Club straddles Depot Road and provides breathtaking views of U.S. and Canadian mountains while winding through former dairy land. Homestead is ideal for golfers of all skill levels. Its 18th hole has been voted the best par-5 finishing hole in the state and owns the distinction of being the only par-5 in Washington to play onto an island green.

Razz ‘N Shine Car Show

Snow Shoeing at Mt. Baker

Lynden Skateway, 421 Judson St. downtown, is the place for open rollerskating on most days.    Other recreational amenities in the area include mountain biking, tubing on the Nooksack River, plenty of high-country hiking and excellent trail running. The saltwater shoreline to the west presents kayaking, ocean fishing, clamming, hiking and birding opportunities. If you like lakes, the county has an abundance of them from Bellingham to Lynden to the Mount Baker area. Fishing, boating, paddleboarding and other activities are popular during the summer months.    While Lynden and the nearby surrounding areas have more than a few recreational choices for people of any age, the town can also be used as a home base for activities that are a bit further away.       The Canadian border is just minutes to the north, opening the door to a whole array of other outdoor wonders. The San Juan Islands beckon from the west, accessible by ferry from Anacortes.    No matter if you are looking for a new hobby or just wanting to enjoy an old pastime, Lynden is a great place to get in touch with the outdoors.

eating options seemed to grow exponentially in Lin theynden’s the past year, with the ongoing boom happening largely downtown corridor.

The Waples Mercantile Building opened in early 2016, bringing with it a variety of places to eat and enjoy.   Avenue Bread, a Bellingham artisan bakery, brought its own flair to the Waples building, complete with a number of Lynden-specific offerings.   Drizzle gives the opportunity for fresh olive oil tasting paired with a vibrant menu filled with varied cuisine.    Opened in February, Overflow Taps offers a rotating set of taps pouring a variety of beers from local and greater Northwest brewers. 25 cents of every pint goes to charity for safe drinking water in developing countries, and Waples restaurants such as Avenue Bread and Drizzle will deliver food orders to Overflow.    Just down Front Street, The Mill Bistro & Lounge brings another Bellingham business north to offer fine wines and cheese (and more) at the base of Lynden’s famed 72-foot Dutch windmill in a completely renovated space. But the new restaurants downtown only touches the tip of what Lynden has to offer. Find traditional Dutch baked goods at the Lynden Dutch Bakery or even a new style of

Jake’s Western Grill The Mill Bistro & Lounge

desserts from the bakery’s new Just Desserts, located in Lynden’s Fairway Center. Old-fashioned diner fare doesn’t get better than at the Fairway Café and there are plenty of steaks to go around at Steakhouse 9 Restaurant and Lounge at Homestead Golf Course. Downtown, the bakery and Dutch Mothers Restaurant offer traditional Dutch favorites. Within strolling distance you will also find Greek and Italian (Syros), Thai (Chandara House), seafood (Jofish), meat pies (Good to Go) and more. Expect a bevy of Mexican-inspired restaurants throughout town, burgers (Grant’s), and pizza (Westside and Coconut Kenny’s). Those searching for some southern comfort can find Jake’s Western Grill in the Lynden Towne Plaza along Guide Meridian Road. And if a sweet tooth is more your thing, check out Edaleen Dairy’s retail stop for homemade ice cream from the Lynden farm, along with an array of treats and sandwiches. Of course, if you’re in a hurry, bakery and coffeecentric items can be readily found at some of Lynden’s local coffee shops or its homegrown The Woods Coffee regional chain, with three locations in Lynden.

L

ynden is blessed with a diversity of schooling options. Two strong and sizable K-12 systems, Lynden public and Lynden Christian, are joined by a complement of smaller schools across the community. The blending of these efforts in academics, vocational training, music, drama and athletics produce a high level of student performance that also serves as a base for their further advance in education and achievement in career and life. Lynden has raised many outstanding contributors to the world at large.   The Lynden School District has three K-5 elementary schools (Fisher, Isom, Bernice Vossbeck), a middle school, a high school and a parent-partnership campus (Lynden Academy). Some (150) classroom teachers are educating (2,600) students (full-time equivalent). Voters’ approval of a $48 million bond has set in motion the exciting construction of a new middle school on a new Line Road site and a new Fisher Elementary right alongside the old school. The goal is for these facilities to open to students in the 2017-18 timeframe.   Lynden Christian Schools operates on a unified

38

campus with an elementary (P-4), middle (5-8) and high school of (1,100) total students and (200) classroom teachers. This school system, with a history in Lynden dating to 1910, today holds a vision of broad, excellent and transformative education. Recent renovation of the gym and athletic facilities of the high school wrapped up a program of building upgrades across the entire system.    Sports have traditionally been a staple of life in the community, showing in lively but friendly rivalry between these two school systems. The basketball double-header involving both boys and girls is well attended each January.   Ebenezer Christian School (P-8), located two miles north of Lynden, is also over 100 years old. On Northwood Road are Covenant Christian School (K-8) and Cornerstone Christian School (1-12), the latter now with its own high school graduates.    Conveniently close by in Bellingham are the resources of a major state university, a model community college and a busy technical college.

et your shopping eyes linger on variety in Lynden. As visitors wander the shops of Lynden — from downtown to Fairway Center to Lynden Towne Plaza and places in between — they will find many options to choose from. The shopping scene is ever evolving, with new shops opening and long-standing ones constantly updating their merchandise. New business Mi Shoes, hailing from Bellingham, offers a variety of stylish footwear for Lynden shoppers. New to Lynden in 2016, Village Books & Paper Dreams is located in the recently renovated Waples Mercantile Building. The historic space houses one of Bellingham’s most beloved bookstores, complete with new books, paper goods and gifts. Within the historic downtown district there’s plenty more to peruse, including trendy fashion (Cheeks), high-end art (Jansen Art Center), games and comics (Heroes Resource) and even furniture (Colony House). One of the longest-standing businesses in all of downtown Lynden, Colony House has only grown over time, taking up a two-story building at the edge of the Historic Downtown Business, serving as both a local 42

and regional option for furniture seekers of all sorts. A variety of antique and consignment stores throughout town allow treasure hunters the thrill of the find and the opportunity to use their imagination to turn a past use into a new use. For those who want an already created treasure for home décor, Lynden has ample options there too, such as Surroundings and Grandiflora. Surroundings, located in the Fairway Center, has proven a popular destination for those searching for the perfect added touch to accent their home’s style. While at Fairway Center, there’s more to see, whether shopping for children (Bumblebees), or your outdoor needs (Dave’s Sports Shop). Dave’s has proven to be the town’s grand central station for all fishing, hunting and camping gear, clothing and licenses and whatever else is needed to be safe and successful out in the wild. Next door to Dave’s is Ace Hardware, more than just a seller of home improvement items. This business has served Lynden for decades with a knowledgeable staff ready to help out in anything related to the home and garden.

verything big started small somewhere, sometime. That somewhere for Lynden Door was right here in Lynden (with a little help from Canada) and that sometime was in 1978.    John Bargen had entered the door-making business in 1948 after a serious flood of the Fraser River in British Columbia prompted him to take up the challenge of replacing flood-damaged doors. But that’s not where the story stops. Bargen turned his small carpentry shop into a door manufacturing business that expanded far beyond Yarrow, B.C. He moved his business to Richmond, B.C., and in 1965, John, with his partners, sold the door business to their biggest customer, woodworking giant Sauder Industries.    After a return to construction came the big change that would spark Lynden Door: Bargen moved to Lynden and purchased a farm with timber off Minaker Road south of Sumas. John joined with newlywed son, Ted, to expand their business, opening Lynden Door in 1978 at the present site in west Lynden.    “During the month of May, my dad and I along with some great helpers were constructing our first building for Lynden Door,” Ted wrote in company

Local student in the Technic Training Center

history. With the help of first employee Sal Biondolillo, who is now the company chaplain, work continued on the first building into the summer of 1978.    “The vision of making doors was still only a dream as we did construction work during the day and rebuilt used glue-spreaders and Wadkin double-end Tenoners at night,” Ted wrote.    Since that original building, Lynden Door has made a habit of expansion. Now the manufacturing facility comprises over 350,000 square feet of space on 52 acres off West Main Street, manufacturing and selling interior wood doors wholesale.    One of the largest interior door manufacturers in the United States, Lynden Door has the distinct position of creating every type of interior wood door sought on the market, from wood veneers to laminates to molded panels to hardboard. It’s done in major production runs right down to custom creations — all in the Lynden plant.    The mix of commercial, residential and architectural creations allows Lynden Door to expect and meet demand no matter which industry sector is booming at any one time. story continues next page > >

The success of Lynden Door helped the Bargen family achieve the vision of creating Cedar Springs Christian Retreat Center, a nonprofit organization on the original Sumas property.    In 2015, Lynden Door expanded into Lynden’s downtown Historic Business District, starting work on a space for about 15 employees from the Main Street site to gather and collaborate with a variety of partners and business associates.    “We see it as a real opportunity to enable and inspire product and service innovations,” said John Ridder, Lynden Door senior vice president. “We envision multi-disciplinary groups gathering in an open setting and discussing issues that affect our business. Imagine an architect, several of our sales and production people, a multi-family building owner and a door pre-hanger having a conversation about indoor air quality, ADA requirements and the changing demographic of American home owners. You can quickly see that it is a rich environment for discussion and solution engineering.”    The space accommodates offices, but also displays samples and audio-visual materials designed to augment plant tours.    Adding new space downtown wasn’t the only major change Lynden Door brought along in 2015. At the

Main Street location, the business debuted space for its Technic Training Center, a home for preparing high school students for jobs specializing in woodworking and modern manufacture. The first group of students entered the program in early 2016.    John Slagle, program director, said Lynden Door plans to “help local students successfully transition into local jobs.” The new 8,000-square-foot building will use hands-on equipment to carry on the desire of the Bargen family to have a more community educational and service impact. By working closely with the Lynden School District, teachers will collaborate with mentors so students can earn high school credit for time learning at the center. Eventually other schools will be included.    Lynden Door is now the anchor business for a family of companies that includes Lynden Door-Canada, Alliance Door Products-U.S., Alliance Door ProductsCanada, Lynden Door Trucking and Source Engineering. The Lynden Door family of companies, spanning 11 sites in nine cities, remains a relationally focused organization that connects customer needs to supplier solutions across the United States and Canada. Lynden Door is now a big business still very much tied to its small-town roots.

he west side of Lynden is located on the busy Guide Meridian Road/State Route 539, which was an early surveying line. Lynden is just a couple of miles from the U.S.-Canada border — the customs station is open 8 a.m. to midnight — with Bellingham 10 miles to the south and Interstate 5 eight miles west via Birch BayLynden Road. From downtown Lynden, Hannegan Road is another popular link to Bellingham, while Hampton and Badger roads get you going east.    Now city-run, Lynden Municipal Airport/Jansen Field has roots as a private strip for Lynden Transport Inc., the company Hank Jansen grew to serve emerging opportunities in Alaska in the 1950s and ‘60s. Small planes are frequently taking off and landing at Lynden, and some taxi right up to hangars at homes along the half-mile runway. An open house event each summer celebrates the role of the airport in town.

48

The Lynden Station at 1945 Front St. is the transfer point for buses of the Whatcom Transportation Authority. The bus route within town is along Front and Grover streets, Vinup and Depot roads, through Homestead and also Aaron Drive. Route 26 then heads back to Bellingham. WTA Paratransit is for those who need specialized transit to get to a destination. Citizens pay for this service via a .6 percent sales tax.    Lynden tries to have plenty of vehicle parking at its shopping and other gathering places. Downtown, you can enjoy a meal and stroll around for a while without paying any charge. Beware backing up from the angle slots and alway give way to pedestrians in crosswalks. Parking is free at the Fairway Center and Lynden Towne Plaza. A new parking lot has been added for all the players and spectators who come to Bender Fields

A

wonderful program offered by the Lynden Chamber of Commerce is the Welkom Basket. This program was put in place to welcome new residents to town and is a great tool for them to get to know their new home. Each basket is filled with coupons and gifts from local businesses and is personally delivered to the residents by our wonderful Lynden Ambassadors, Ada Voskuilen and Virgi Diephuis. Ada and Virgi share about Lynden, and also take that time to get to know each new family, giving us the ability to discover why they moved here, and what they are looking for.

This program has proven to be an invaluable tool in helping us make the families feel welcome, and it is also the chance for the new residents to get to know Lynden and be reminded why this is such a great place to live. It also gives our members a chance to get information about their business out to the community in a fun and inviting way. To request a Welkom Basket or to be a part of this great program contact the Lynden Chamber of Commerce at 360-354-5995.
