Best New Business: VibrantUSA ‘Well-informed agents’ lead to insurance agency success Many agencies are involved in the Medicare insurance field, making for a competitive environment. What VibrantUSA aims to do is a little different — they care. It’s this approach that has led to Vibrant’s 15 years of business success and its rapid expansion to multiple branches, including the Lynden office that opened in June. Vibrant represents more than 30 regional and national insurance companies. Right now, Vibrant serves 20,000 customers in Washington, half of those residing in Whatcom and Skagit counties. “Our business focus is truly being a navigator for seniors in the confusing world of Medicare insurance,” said CEO Russell Solberg. “We’re the independent voice and not just going to sell you something and disappear.” In fact, the Vibrant approach to business counters what is typically ingrained in sales people. Vibrant doesn’t charge for the services provided. Instead, the compensation comes after a policy is sold. And there is no
added incentive for agents to sway customers toward one plan over another — they’re paid about the same commission no matter which plan is purchased. “If a customer comes to us and they are already on the plan that meets their needs, we’re more than happy telling them that,” Solberg said. Vibrant takes a captive-model approach and isn’t beholden to any insurance

companies. It’s the “unbiased, independent and trusted” business reputation that draws in clients, referred to Vibrant by others. But it’s the caring agents, Solberg said, that have led to the businesses success. “We really train our people to understand everything in the Medicare world,” Solberg said. “We want customers to be on the best plan for them regardless if we’re making a buck or two. Our mission is to make sure seniors know we’re a resource for them.”

Best Charity: New Way Ministries Core value is loving guidance to young mothers Quietly and mostly out of view, a service of hope for young women goes on each day at New Way Ministries. When director Suzanne Olson or another staff member gets a call back from a mother — now out on her own somewhere — who is thanking them for helping her set a good new direction for her life, they feel deeply rewarded. “Our God is a God of hope and he is committed to changing lives,” Olson says. That is the motivation and inspiration behind this ministry of receiving women, with children, who are coming out of some crisis or unhealthy situation and want to change their outlook and start a better life for themselves. It has been going on since 2003 in the multi-purpose New Hope Center at 205 South B.C. Ave., where a good portion of the facility is converted into living units that can handle up to 23 mothers with children at any one time. The core personal ingredient is steady unconditional loving of the resident women, without judging, while providing the practical resources and support needed for them to set a positive new path. Referrals to New Way can come from hospitals, safe houses, government agencies and even just a friend or former resident who knows that change is possible here. The heart of the program is six months of housing for moms and their kids, with close case management using community resources, to enable the women to get to healthy independent living and working — a new way. The

The New Way staff of 11, mostly part-time, is “an amazing team” committed to this vision, Olson said. The entire program also involves Great Expectations, for women who are pregnant, and Next Steps, up to a year of further mentored transition while living in subsidized apartments. New Way Ministries is one aspect of the Christian Hope Association of Lynden, which also runs the Project Hope Food
Bank and associated assistance to the needy. It is all supported by the giving and serving of individuals, churches, schools, businesses and community organizations. The families helped by New Way first of all need a place of warmth and safety they can settle into, said caseworker Kristen Oudman. Then there is an assessment and “directionsetting” phase with the women, from the varied situations they have come out of, including domestic violence and sexual trafficking. They may need to heal
from broken relationships, or break some negative patterns. They will be asked, “where do you see yourself in five years?” and will think about that question seriously. Childcare is provided on the premises, so that the women can attend outside classes, court sessions or medical treatment, as needed. They may be completing some education or skills development. They are counseled on finances, family life, and steps to employment. Olson said it is “quite a triumph” when one of the resi-
dents lands an outside job, and everyone of New Way celebrates with them. School-age children catch their bus along B.C. Avenue while the moms can use a WTA transit stop just a block away on Front Street. Oudman said that a favorite time for staff is when the New Way residents begin to bond like families and see what good family life can be. They see staff, volunteers and community mentors loving on their See New Way on C6
