Best Wild Card: Lynden Line Dancers Charlene Lenn leads dancing — and helping a veterans’ recovery group    The Lynden Line Dancers group, led by Charlene “Char” Lenn, not only has fun, but also raises money for a serious cause: helping combat veterans cope with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and traumatic brain injury.    About 20 members of Lynden Line Dancers performed on Front Street at the start of the 2019 Lighted Christmas Parade on Dec. 7. They have done this pre-show for several years now, and they’ll even invite any willing person in the crowd to join them.    The benefiting rehab program is named Heroes and Horses, Lenn explains. “Over the last three years we’ve Continued on the next page

C4 bought them $20,000 in equine tack that’s needed to sustain their 40-day summer program, which takes place in Montana. It’s open to any (male) veteran in the USA.”    Although it’s true this recovery program reaches beyond Whatcom County, Lenn is aware of local participants in Heroes and Horses.    “In 2019 we were there to work in the base camp and met a veteran from Ferndale,” she said.    Lenn believes in what Heroes and Horses does. “This program really works. We’ve been there and seen for ourselves. Who knows? There could be a hometown Lynden veteran that needs the help. As long as there’s a combat veteran who suffers from PTSD, Lynden Line Dancers will keep ‘dancing for our heroes.’”   Anyone interested in learning line dancing can stop by the Ten Mile Grange, 6958 Hannegan Rd., on Thursday, Friday or Saturday nights, for just $5 per session.    Lenn is the energetic class instructor, in addition to working at Laurel Farm & Western Supply, defying her age somewhere north of 70. She is still full of goals, including wanting a true dance hall for the Lynden area.    While she was already in dance classes as a child, Lenn came to line dancing in her late 30s. She relocated to Lynden around 20 years ago from southern Oregon, then after being widowed noticed how dancing can be useful to gain a good circle of friends.   Lynden Line Dancers launched about eight years ago. Other folks may have less dancing experience, but they love it all the same. Single moms and widows are part of the group, as well as men with their wives.    The music is surprisingly not all country. “We dance to all kinds of music … as long as it has a good beat!” Lenn thinks more people could appreciate the benefits of line dancing — “clean, fun exercise, carefree” — if they gave it a try.    “There’s lots of laughing

Lenn and two other members made the road trip to deliver the gear straight to the office in Manhattan, Montana. Heroes and Horses staff did a live Facebook post of receiving the gift and had LLD dance on their broken sidewalk in a “boot scooting boogie.”    Another auction brought in $4,000, and on a second trip back to Montana the Whatcom folks were invited by Heroes

(Courtesy photo) in class.” Also, Lenn believes in “staying young,” and healthy, by being around active people.    She used to teach line dancing at corporate events and private parties. She has even considered using line dancing now as a fundraiser for the local fire department. The veterans connection    Lenn has always “adopted soldiers.” But she finds that many in Lynden Line Dancers never have been involved in or able to give back to a larger cause they believe in.    An advocate for military

veterans, she just happened to come across the Heroes and Horses website and was captivated. The base is located in the beautiful Beartooth Mountains of Montana, with a program put together by a Navy SEAL. “It's not a vacation.”    This is a stat from the Department of Veterans Affairs: From 2008 to 2017 at least 60,000 veterans died of suicide, and the crisis is not abating.    The mission at Heroes and Horses is to give combat veterans a different way of dealing with their physical and mental scars — a solution that does

and Horses to help stage a big gala in Bozeman. One LLD member is an auctioneer and his microphone skills helped raise $400,000. The relationship has continued. From cooking at the Heroes and Horses base camp for 10 days, Lenn will now do one month in 2020.    The local fundraiser in 2019 shifted from Boundary Bay to being a Barnburner & Fish Fry at Pioneer Park of Ferndale in June, and another $13,000 was collected.    Lenn happened to recognize the distinctive belt buckle of someone attending — it turned out he was a vet who had been through the program, and he drove from another part of Washington to be there.    “We are now family,” she said of both the LLD and Heroes and Horses.    Still a dream in Lenn’s mind is to have her own local dance hall that she could run as a nonprofit for ex-soldiers. She would like to see veterans with prosthetics and even wheelchairs welcomed onto the dance floor with the others. — Elisa Claassen
