The following are Q&As with the school’s top academics
Eliot VargaGPA: 4.0
Where will you attend college?
I will attend college at the University of Washington in Seattle to study medical laboratory science.
As a child, what was the first thing you wanted to become when you grew up?
I always wanted to be a scientist of some sort, but I eventually figured out I didn’t have the stomach for practical medicine and discovered my love for research and chemistry in a laboratory.
What are your career plans?
After I get my BS in medical lab science, I want to pursue a master’s degree in immunology and pursue a career either in a university research lab or in a vaccine development lab.
What is the greatest thing you gained from your K-12 experience? What is the greatest thing you gained from attending your high school?
The greatest thing I gained from my expe-
rience over the past 13 years was that success comes not just from a lot of effort in academics but genuinely finding joy in your passions and discovering a place for yourself around people you love. The greatest thing I gained from my high school is experience in many different extracurriculars and programs, which I think has helped me develop into a well-rounded student.
Who is your role model?
My role model is easily my Algebra 2 and Calculus teacher, Mrs. Rachel Unger. While she only taught me for a short time, she made such a profound impact on my life as someone who pursued
academics passionately and had a genuine love for her profession. She found happiness not only in teaching but furthering her own education and became a huge support for me as I pursued my own academic career. I strive to be like her and find that same satisfaction and happiness in my future career, especially as I continue my education beyond my bachelor’s degree. What do you hope to be doing in five years? In 10 years? In 20 years?
In five years, I will realistically still be in college pursuing my master’s degree, but I hope to begin studying in a lab by that point helping on specific research projects. In 10 and 20 years I hope to have established myself in
a research lab and be contributing to important work that will have a positive effect on health and medicine worldwide. I might consider a doctorate degree but that will mostly depend on circumstances and financial security.
What is the most important thing in your life?
The most important thing in my life is the support and love of my friends and family. They have been there since the beginning and make my life worth living because I have such amazing people surrounding me. Who is the most important person in your life?
The most important person in my life is my little sister Quincy. She’s the most close to me in age out of all my sisters and is one of the most beautiful, compassionate and creative people I have been lucky to know. I want to be the kind of person that she’d be proud to call her sister, and I want her to know that I am actually still taller than her and anyone who says otherwise is delusional.
