Westside Building Supply creating booth full of attractions Work put into Home Show aims to give customers plenty to think about By Tim Newcomb tim@lyndentribune.com
LYNDEN — Westside Building Supply’s Peter Svedin knows visitors to the Home & Garden Show this weekend don’t want to go poking around bins of miscellaneous hardware or in buckets of nails. That much is obvious. So, instead, he’s giving the show’s visitors what they do want and all within the confines of the longtime Lynden company’s 20-by20-foot booth. “Typically people like to look at cabinets, so we’ll have that in there,” he said. “People are always doing decking, so we have a variety of deck thought processes. We will feature some big, heavy timber framing. It is always really attractive to do something like that.” But even as Westside employees — from cabinet and interior designers to carpenters — aesthetically pack in plenty of what Westside features, Svedin said they are “still trying to make it not look like a garage sale of stuff.” Early indications show that the team succeeded.
Home Show this weekend at fairgrounds LYNDEN — The 35th annual Home & Garden Show of the Whatcom County Building & Industry Association is this weekend, Friday through Sunday, at the Northwest Washington Fairgrounds. About 170 exhibitors will fill the Henry Jansen Agricultural Center with their diversity of products and services related to home and yard upgrading and maintenance. Over $10,000 in prizes will be given away. Demonstrations are ongoing. Friday night is Date Night, with cooking demonstrations, beer and wine tasting, music and prizes. On Sunday at 1 p.m., popular gardening commentator Ciscoe Morris will be present. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors (55 and older), with ages under 16 free. Parking is free.
Ideas for stairs and railings will be in the Westside booth at the Home Show. (Tim Newcomb/Lynden Tribune)
Svedin said they picked out elements based on what customers really enjoy seeing, but also wanted to implement some products that showcases the range of Westside’s offerings. One side of the booth features a set of stairs with a modern railing rising above a miniature man cave. The opposite side features a wall, starting unfinished on one side and then showing insulation, sheet rock, siding and even a “great big door” and a window to show visitors the progression of construction. Also within the booth expect to see an electric fireplace with a custom-made mantel, a modern-looking uncommon interior door and cabinets and decking. Svedin hopes people walk away from the booth with plenty of inspira-
tion for their own projects, but also with the knowledge that Westside has what they need to turn inspiration into reality. During the show, which is a challenge to prepare for, Svedin admits, he said there is energy within the building as people catch up with old friends and swap ideas with a variety of visitors. Coming up with something new each year, though, is tough. “Every year we try to change the booth around so it looks a little different,” Svedin said. While Westside may recycle a product for a second year, nothing ever makes it longer than that to keep a steady rotation of new ideas. “Everything is always cycling because people want something fresh,” he said. Not just a bucket of nails.

Lynden tree business can do the job Home Show one of many ways to get the word out By Braulio Perez sports@lyndentribune.com
From big to small jobs, if it involves a tree Tim Bento’s business can do it. (Courtesy photo/Tim Bento)
LYNDEN — Tim Bento said Dig Lynden Tree Service is coming off its best year in the 10 years he’s been open for business. With spring right around the corner, though, Bento is looking forward to trading his snow pants and snowshoes to get outside around Whatcom County and provide local residents with the quality services he offers. “I had the best year I ever had last year,” Bento said. “It started out with a referral from the Faber brothers, getting me in at Wildwood Resort, where we did a sevenweek project and worked on over 200 trees. “I do a lot of work for the Northwest Washington Fair in August as well, which is a great venue for me. I do all the tree work for the fairgrounds and last year I used my 60-foot boom truck to rappel down and clean things up.” Bento will be at the 2014 Home & Gar-
den show this weekend, something he said he has been doing on and off over the years. “The Home and Garden Show is a nice springboard into the new season,” Bento said. “It fills the schedule up, but it’s nice because it’s also not overwhelming for us. It generates referrals and internet business.” A large portion of his business throughout the spring and summer months comes from simple Google searches, where Whatcom County residents often see Dig Lynden Tree Service at the top of the page. “The internet field is very competitive, but when people type Lynden tree services into Google, my business commands that search. I get probably half of my leads from raw internet searches. Combined with leads, the internet and the home show, it’s really a great way to go into spring and get the word out.” Bento added that he gets help from other sources as well. “A lot of real estate agents refer me,” Bento said. “I have big names in Whatcom County who inform local citizens about my business, which is great. The community has been happy with our work and we’re happy to work with them as well.”

Lyndale Glass: A window on quality options Guidance through a span of residential products By Mark Reimers news@ferndalerecord.com
WHATCOM — They all try to do it. Window and door manufacturers have become obsessed with the need to offer every conceivable product. “All of the different manufacturers are trying to do everything themselves,” said Dennis Bosman, co-owner of Lyndale Glass. “But no one is quite covering everything perfectly.” It’s a good thing, then, that Lyndale Glass has plenty of knowledgeable employees who are fully aware of the strengths and shortcomings of the different brands competing for homeowners’ attention. “Someone comes in because they are building a house. They say ‘Oh, we
need windows’ and then their eyes glaze over with all of the options,” Bosman said. “Some people love that. Or you can let your builder decide if you want. But maybe you will regret it later when you see what someone else got (in their house).” Dealing with all the information is a challenge. Gone are the days of a simple double-pane window or upgrading from aluminum to vinyl. Today, window frames have nearly unlimited styles. Add to that a resurgence of color choices, and the word “options” has a whole new meaning. Whether it is building or upgrading, chances are good that style is only half of the equation when shoppers walk into a Lyndale Glass showroom. They are probably looking for the latest in energy efficiency too. “Energy codes are tightening,” Bosman said. “There are new technologies being developed. Manufacturers are constantly trying to find ways to make products more energy efficient.”
PROGRESS at its best... OPEN Saturdays 8am-1pm Starting March 1
It’s one of the most rewarding parts of the business, according to Bosman. “We definitely can feel good about what we do because we are saving energy,” Bosman said. That makes Lyndale budget- and environment-friendly. New technology in glass has progressed several degrees beyond what used to be the standard in heat energy exchange ratings. Today, for example, special coatings can be applied to the outside of a multiple pane window as well as the inside, where it usually is. While glass is part of the company name, Lyndale Glass has a whole lot more to offer homeowners. “We do a broad spectrum of stuff,” Bosman said. “We’ve developed far beyond what a typical glass shop used to be.” Doors, storm doors, screens and hardware are some of the other products. This is where access to the different manufacturers is important, since some specialize in specific materials. Wood is
aesthetically pleasing, Bosman said, but not the most durable — fiberglass can offer a respectable imitation. Lyndale Glass began in 1986 when Bosman and Dan Haan purchase Ferndale Glass on Main Street in Ferndale. Two years later, they expanded to Lynden in the building formerly occupied by Lynden Glass, prompting the final company name choice. In the early 1990s, the company expanded into Bellingham and Mount Vernon, a move that dramatically increased the reach of the business. Lyndale Glass now offers full service commercial work throughout Whatcom, Skagit, San Juan and Island counties. For windows, standard and shower doors, mirrors, skylights, Solatubes, screens or custom-cut glass, call Lyndale Glass in Whatcom County at 354-3937 (Lynden), 384-5956 (Ferndale) or 6764269 (Bellingham). Browns Tractor & Turf finds a niche New owner Steve Brown looks to fill voids left by recent business closures By Brent Lindquist reporter@lyndentribune.com
EVERSON — For Browns Tractor & Turf, it’s all about finding a niche. “For many years, Everson Farm Equipment relied solely on the dairy industry,” owner Steve Brown said. “As that consumer base shrinks, the growth opportunities that we saw were in the homeowner and in the hobby farmer (areas), the lifestyle segment.” Brown acquired the Everson store at 304 W. Main St. three years ago from Marv Vander Heiden, who had owned the business since the early 1970s. The company basically spent about 64 years in the same family. The name change is meant to accommodate whatever growth may come in the future, and Brown now offers three different product lines (Kioti, Husqvarna and Toro) and a versatile tractor and equipment repair service. The three lines help the company cater to a wide audience, ranging across home
ownership, wood-lot management and small-scale farming. “Toro has a lot more commercial products than Husqvarna does, and we want to tap into that commercial market,” Brown said. Part of that clientele he hopes to attract includes customers seeking a business to fill the voids left by the closures of businesses Lynden Mower and Jon’s Truck Repair. “The people in Lynden don’t really have anybody up there, other than Washington Tractor, for their lawn and garden stuff,” he said. In addition, the company has expanded its service wing to include trucks. The most recent hire at Browns Tractor & Turf has about 10 years of experience working on trucks large and small. The business can work on everything from small equipment to heavy industrial equipment. “We want people to know that we can also take care of their lawn, their home maintenance stuff,” Brown said. Browns will have a double booth at the Whatcom County Home & Garden Show this year, and Brown said he looks forward to the camaraderie experienced every year at the show and to the exposure offered by the show.

Joostens Roofing brings shingle recycling to Whatcom County After five years at the Home Show, Joostens still wants to connect with visitors By Tim Newcomb tim@lyndentribune.com
LAUREL — Amidst the dozens of booths packed into the Home & Garden Show, there’s always a crowd around the Joostens Roofing booth — and not just because president and owner Paul Joostens and estimator John Biondolillo are flying miniature helicopters, as they have in the past. “It is a great opportunity to network with local contractors and homeowners,” Joostens said about the event. It is over those four days where he’s able to share the story of his 14-year-old locally owned and operated business. “We want people to know that we are focused on customer service and superior
value in our industry.” And value is a focus of the homeowner right now. Joostens said he’s seen a trend toward homeowners choosing value first and worrying about appearance less, whether an existing home or in new construction, which has enjoyed continued growth recently. To help exact the most value as possible, Joostens has embraced an industry-wide trend of shingle recycling, now recycling 80 percent of all roofs torn off by the 18-plus employees of the company. Recycling shingles allows Joostens to not only save customers money, but it also keeps the used shingles from going into area landfills. Even as Joostens Roofing continues to focus on recycling, the company has also spent plenty of time planning for the future, remodeling its Guide Meridian Road offices and upgrading trucks, trailers and other equipment. With all that he has going on, owner Paul Joostens will be happy to chat about it at the Home Show. Just watch for those helicopters.

Soon the focus turns to spring and summer construction By Braulio Perez sports@lyndentribune.com
LYNDEN — It has been a busy winter for VanderYacht Propane general manager Greg Bowlin and the rest of his team. With Whatcom County temperatures often below freezing, homeowners around the area have been extra needy this year to keep their homes warm. That’s where VanderYacht Propane comes in. “Home heating is big for us through March and a little bit into April,” Bowlin said. “It was pretty nasty out there this year.” For VanderYacht Propane, though, it’s not just keeping homes warm that is their bread and butter. “Our biggest building time is during the spring and summer when construction is going on,” Bowlin said. “That’s what we want to make sure we’re a part of. We’re trying to promote propane during the
home show because it’s part of building homes. “We promote propane appliances and applications. We do commercial, industrial and, of course, residential outdoor work as well. This includes outdoor barbecues and all the other things people use.” The Home & Garden Show, where VanderYacht Propane has exhibited on and off for several years, is a great venue to help generate business. “It’s a lot of fun every year and we’re excited,” Bowlin said. “We try to promote ourselves to people in the area, including construction companies, by offering attractive deals.” With construction starting to pick up steam, that also helps business, he added. “It’s starting to come back pretty good.” Bowlin said. “I think back in 200809 it dropped down to nothing. Lately it’s become popular again, which has been a big help for us.” When people do call VanderYacht Propane for services, they can expect many things, Bowlin said. “We pride ourselves on quality installations and being on time,” Bowlin said. “We get nothing but praise on our service.”

Taylor’s brings its variety for the home backyard — and not just pools Lynden business’s market stretches from Seattle into B.C. By Calvin Bratt editor@lyndentribune.com
LYNDEN — Anyone can go to the Taylor’s Backyard Center website to get a picture of the diversity of backyard products sold and installed by this family business. To get a direct and personal idea of how you might revitalize your property, however, you need to visit at 1071 Van Dyk Rd. or conveniently attend the Whatcom County Home & Garden Show where Taylor’s has been a faithful exhibitor in an outside booth. It all started 20 years ago on the basis of Bob Taylor’s background in the hot tub manufacturing business in the East. At first, Taylor Industries was mostly about hot tubs and pools. But it certainly has branched out along the way. Now the list of products covers: aquatic fitness, fencing, hand railings, driveway gates, barbecue and patio supplies, space heaters, architectural pieces and who knows what else of outdoor living. Customers would ask, related to an outside need, “can you do this?” and after a while Taylor’s was doing it, explains Jesse Taylor, Bob’s son, who is now three years into the day-to-day operation of the business. “All the other stuff just tagged along.” The Lynden show is the first one Taylor’s goes to in the United States each

season, and it often is an indicator of trends in customer preferences, Jesse said. It is a great place to build up leads and connections, also within the construction industry, as Taylor’s knows a lot of its business comes off the referrals of previously satisfied customers. Jesse said Taylor’s reach is from north Seattle into lower British Columbia and sometimes into eastern Washington. “The Canadian interest has always been strong,” he said. The business remains primarily family-run, with sister Sarah doing marketing from Seattle. Otherwise, the key to success is to
seek out high-quality products, Jesse said. “We’re quick to check something for quality. That’s important to us. And we want to aim for quality in our workmanship too.” Taylor’s provides service for every item sold and claims the largest parts inventory in the Pacific Northwest. The staff is just four year-round, but can double or triple in the summer. Bob still heads up sales, although there is plenty of sharing of whatever tasks need to get done. Jesse said he is excited to experience the challenge of being in a small business that has had to adapt and be flexible for change over the years.
