Local landscaping business at show for first time
Before and after photos show the capabilities of Dusty Manderson's Sound Lawn Care and Landscaping crew, which employs as many as 15 people across six crews during peak time. (Courtesy photos/Sound Lawn Care and Landscaping)
Dusty Manderson grew up doing Lynden lawn care By Calvin Bratt editor@lyndentribune.com
WHATCOM — Dusty Manderson got his start working in lawn and yard care as a teen in Lynden. That early experience still serves him well now when someone says offhandedly “I want a
Lynden lawn.” He knows that means mowed weekly, well groomed, nice and tight. It can be handy lingo. Dusty has been on his own now for eight years — 17 years in all in the field — with Sound Lawn Care and Landscaping. The business, with wife Rebecca keeping the books, employs as many as 15 in six crews during spring and summer peak time. They are busy tending to 250 clients from Lynden to Bellingham, with other parts of the county thrown in.
Manderson said he will be at the Whatcom County Home & Garden Show for the first time this year, mainly to get the word out about his landscaping side, which can pretty much develop a site from scratch, including irrigation systems, gazebos and patios. Sound will also do maintenance and repair. Of course, he will do free estimates and consulting on a prospective job. Manderson said that, as much as possible, he aims to use local suppliers of the materials and equipment he needs.

Dusty and Rebecca, both 2001 Lynden Christian High School grads, have three children. They try to give back to the community in which they were raised via these causes: Awana, Boyfriend Bears, Rotary and Boys & Girls Club auctions, Christian schools’ tuition reduction incentive programs. They offer a 5 percent military service discount.

Upfront Theatre bringing comedy to home show Expect some comedy improvisation, with a home-building twist By Tim Newcomb tim@lyndentribune.com
LYNDEN — Sometimes home improvement projects require plenty of improvisation. Bellingham’s Upfront Theatre adds a bit of humor to the process at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, during the BIA Whatcom County Home & Garden Show. As the local improvisation theater has done in the past, Upfront will have a booth at the show and then put on its own hourlong comedy show. Kris Erickson, sales and marketing director, said the theater will bring four improvisers to the Lynden event. “We’ll be getting suggestions from the audience, hopefully (Home and Garden Show) related,” he said. “We will keep it relative to where we are at. “It is lots of fun. It livens the show up,” he said. Erickson said that visitors to the home show get used to meandering around, and having an improv comedy show to stop and take in draws a crowd and gets some laughs going.

Brim Tractor to showcase zero-turn lawnmowers, implements New Holland, Yanmar tractors to be on display as well By Brent Lindquist reporter@lyndentribune.com
The days of turning lawnmowers with steering wheels are over, if Bad Boy Mowers has anything to say about it. Lynden’s Brim Tractor will have a spot at the BIA Home & Garden Show, and the company will showcase its array of Bad Boy zeroturn mowers as part of its display. “You can turn on a dime,” said Henry Buiter, Brim agricultural sales. “You can mow around your fence posts and your trees, without having to back up and do a threepoint turn.” Brim will also have a sampling of Yanmar and New Holland tractors, complete with implements attached. Brim Tractor is located at 350 Duffner Dr. in Lynden. Call 354-4411 for more information.

Kent’s Garden & Nursery booth will ‘contain’ an array of plant varieties Smaller focus allows for bigger examples By Tim Newcomb tim@lyndentribune.com
You may not be able to “contain yourself” when checking out the display of Kent’s Garden & Nursery this weekend at the Whatcom County Home & Garden Show. The north Bellingham nursery has returned to the annual show after taking a couple of years off, giving visitors a chance to check out all things containers. “A lot, lot, lot of people are interested in casual planting, container planting,” said Ginny Crump, co-owner of Kent’s. “We can show off a lot of our plants and a lot of different methods and selections and different varieties and textures really close together.”
With a small booth, Kent’s mimics the folks who may have smaller yards or even just patios. Showgoers can get a good look at what the nursery does and the variety it offers in the way of small dwarf conifers, small dwarf flowering trees, perennials, annuals and edibles, the latter being a key focus of this year’s exhibit. When Kent’s is in the show, it really wants to mix things up from year to year. “We really want to do something different,” Crump said. “We want to make it look fun and exciting.” The containers themselves will be a mix from large vessels fully potted up to much smaller examples, whether pottery or wooden earthy containers. “We have a lot of customers coming in for advice on containers right now,” Crump said. They’ll get the answers they are looking for this year, if they can contain themselves.
Home Show this weekend at fairgrounds LYNDEN — The 36th annual Home & Garden Show of the Whatcom County Building & Industry Association is this weekend, Friday through Sunday, at the Northwest Washington Fairgrounds. Russell’s Window Coverings keeps providing service to count on Promotion now with new owners features Victoria, B.C., trip drawing at show By Calvin Bratt editor@lyndentribune.com
LYNDEN — Russell’s Window Coverings has been around a while, even present at the home show several times under former owner Russell McElroy. In mid-2013 there was a quiet change of ownership to Legacy Design Inc., which already does business as Legacy Kitchen and Bath of Jacquie Scott in Lynden. Russell’s became a project of Jacquie as president and Dave Hamstra as operations manager, with longtime employee Josh Nicholas continuing with his expertise. Previously, Hamstra was a general contractor and finish carpenter for many years. “There’s a large following in the community that we want to know can still count on us,” Jacquie said. “That continuity is very important to keep going.” So Russell’s will be at the 2015 Whatcom County Home and Garden Show this week with a booth and a special promotion as well. Buy $1,000 of products and be entered into a drawing for a two-night stay in Victoria, B.C., and $100 spending cash. Earn additional entries for each ad-

ditional $1,000 spent. The goal of the business is to offer a wide range of options, styles and designs to choose from — “a vast selection of window treatments perfect for just about any window imaginable,” says the website. A showroom and workshop are at 873 Hinotes Court, Suite A2, in the business park just north of Hinotes Corner at Pole and Hannegan roads. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The phone number is 656-6579. Russell’s Window Coverings offers classic horizontal blinds, timeless plantation shutters, faux wood and fully customized draperies. Brand names carried are Hunter Douglas, Comfortex, Skandia, Century and Norman. Of course, window fashion dovetails well with the cabinetry and countertops offered by Legacy Kitchen and Bath, which Jacquie operates at 1610 Grover St. in town. Dave will readily go out to a home to size up particular needs. He also does repairs of window coverings. Full fabrication is done in-house in the well-stocked shop. Many jobs come by way of contractor referrals, both of custom and spec jobs, or from Realtors working with a house in transition. But any homeowner contact is welcome. Russell’s has appreciated a job recently with Shilshole Construction in the Seattle area — helping convert a historic building into apartments, including finding the right fabrics to fit authentically — and there may be more business to come along those lines.

Alpine Coffee brings espresso, baked goods to show floor Founder Daisy Morgan also started Two Sisters Coffee By Brent Lindquist reporter@lyndentribune.com
Bellingham’s Alpine Coffee has become a staple of the BIA Home & Garden Show, having had a presence there now for the past two years. Owner Daisy Morgan is celebrating her company’s third year at the show, and she’ll be bringing goodies with her. The Alpine Coffee booth will feature espresso drinks, including the popular seasonal Nutty Irishman Latte. It’ll basically be a traditional espresso stand, complete with pastries from a few different local bakeries. “If you’re craving a raspberry white chocolate scone from the Lynden Dutch Bakery, we’ll have those too,” Morgan
This year will be Alpine Coffee's third at the Lynden home show. (Courtesy photo/Alpine Coffee) said. Alpine Coffee was founded in January 2013 by Morgan, a longtime barista and resident of Whatcom County. She
