Changes coming to Riverside Park's Ski to Sea handoff point Road bike-to-canoe handoff being moved down 400 feet for safety reasons By Brent Lindquist reporter@lyndentribune.com
EVERSON — The crucial Ski to Sea Race handoff point at Riverside Park will be quite a bit safer this year. "We moved the start of the canoe leg and the end of the road bike leg about 400 feet," race director Pete Coy said. Previously, road bikers had to make a hard right turn from Main Street to Park Drive, where the handoff to the canoe leg would take place. "They're still going to make the right turn, but they're going to have a 400-foot straight stretch before they do the chip handoff," Coy said. "It's going to make it easier for the canoeist waiting to receive the chip to identify their teammate." The change gives both the road bikers and canoeists extra reaction time to scope out their teammates for the handoff. Another change is coming to the Everson handoff point, this one having nothing to do with the actual running of the race. Last year, a mix of parking cars and constant rain essentially destroyed the grass at Riverside Park, and race organizers don't want to see that happen ever again. "Because of that rain, we kind of destroyed Riverside Park. We didn't feel very good about that," Coy said. "We decided that we would no longer park cars on the grass at Riverside Park, and we helped pay to restore the park after the race." In addition to paying for the restoration, race organizers decided to park cars

in a different area. A farmer with a field near the west entrance of the park will allow parking in his field. The race, set for Sunday, May 25, will have the usual seven-leg structure: crosscountry skiing, downhill ski/snowboard, running, road biking, canoeing, crosscountry biking and sea kayaking. The race begins at the Mount Baker Ski Area, moving along the Mt. Baker Highway and then through Everson before finishing at Fairhaven’s Marine Park. The downhill skiing/snowboarding leg of the race consists of a 2.5-mile loop. Runners will traverse eight miles and a 2,200-foot drop in elevation. Bicyclists will pedal 42 miles before handing off the race to their team’s canoers, who will paddle 18.5 miles. Mountain bikers will take over at Ferndale’s Hovander Park before handing off to the final leg, the sea kayakers, in Squalicum Harbor, for a total of approximately 93 miles. Glen Echo Garden hosting grand re-opening Owner Dick Bosch has added restrooms and two more garden themes: Japanese and fern/moss By Brent Lindquist reporter@lyndentribune.com
EVERSON — Glen Echo Garden, located on Y Road off the Mount Baker Highway, began on property purchased way back in 1971. Owner Dick Bosch began clearing the land for the garden soon after building a house there in 1975. Bosch has come a long way since then, founding Glen Echo Garden and now hosting a grand re-opening set for June 6-7. "We've put in two new buildings," Bosch said. "We have a kitchen event area which is not completed yet. It'll be done probably in about a month. Then we built two new restrooms, with a handicappedaccessible restroom and then we also had to get portable water. We drilled a well. I was very fortunate with my well. It turned out to be very good quality water, but it's also an artesian well. That required a little pump house. So we've done quite a bit of building." Also, over the past three years, Bosch has added two new gardens: a Japanese garden and a sunken fern and moss garden. "We feel that we have the nicest tourist attraction north of Seattle," Bosch said. "People are gradually finding out about us, and I've put up a sign right in our parking lot because people don't always see what we have. We're kind of hidden." One of the unique attractions at Glen Echo is the stump garden, which features See Glen Echo on C6

western red cedar stumps cut by loggers decades ago anywhere from eight to 10 feet off the ground. Glen Echo has about 15 of those stumps, all of which have new trees growing out of the top. Bosch likes to ask visitors how old they think these cedar trees are, and he likes to quiz them on why the trees were cut so high off the ground. "People just cannot figure that out," Bosch said. "At the bottom of those trees, 24 to 30 inches off the ground where the roots swell out, it is so wide that the saws were not long enough. These loggers had no choice but to go up six, seven or eight feet." Also featured on the Glen Echo grounds is a museum featuring relics from the past, including ones hearkening back to the days of the Glen Echo Coal Company. "There was an explosion in that mine in the late 30s or around 1940, and there were fatalities," Bosch said. "We've heard different numbers. As many as 20 people got killed in that explosion. The mine is just off the south end of the property. That is of interest to a lot of people, the history." The grand re-opening event will feature tours of the gardens as well as refreshments. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, June 6-7. It costs $9.50 for adults, $8.50 for seniors, $7.50 for students, $3.50 for kids ages 8 to 13, with kids under 8 free. Group rates are available, with groups of 10 or more receiving a $1 discount per person. Glen Echo Garden is open regularly from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. It is closed on Sunday. The gardens are located at 4390 Y Rd. off the Mount Baker Highway.

Nooksack Valley School District honors Graduates of Distinction Two graduates added to distinguished list EVERSON — The Nooksack Valley School District has announced its selections for 2014 Graduates of Distinction. The Graduates of Distinction program began in 2004 as a way to honor past graduates for their service or achievement. Since then, 24 graduates have been recognized. This year, Nooksack Valley added Stephen A. Jones, class of 1970, and Esther (Struiksma) Neufeld, class of 1969, to the list of distinguished graduates. "Mr. Jones has been a successful banker in the community since 1976. His vast community service models true stewardship to a community," a district press release read. Jones has been involved with 12 local service or civic organizations since 1977. He has spent the last 25 years on the Nooksack Valley School Board, serving as alternating chairman. Jones was instrumental in establishing a Dollars for Scholars program at Nooksack Valley. Under his guidance, graduating seniors receive upwards of $80,000 a year to fund their post-secondary goals. In addition, he currently serves as a member and treasurer of the Opportunity Council and Whatcom County Economic Development Investment Board. "Overall, the selection committee felt that Mr. Jones epitomizes commu-
nity service in striving to make Nooksack Valley, and Whatcom County a great place to live, do business and attend school," the district wrote. Neufeld has devoted her life to the betterment of the less fortunate as a missionary in Togo, West Africa. Over her time, she helped women and children become advocates for themselves by supporting orphanages, schools for the blind, and single mothers by providing work. She organized a sewing school for orphans to provide training for young women who would have otherwise been “married off,” or worse. Nooksack Valley High School held an assembly on May 5 to honor the graduates in front of the student body.

Growing church finds a place, now needs full-time pastor NV Christ Community is in former Christian Reformed Church building By Calvin Bratt editor@lyndentribune.com
EVERSON — An existing church building has new users. And a busy part-time pastor is also hoping to get more help. Steve Mason, who had a hand in founding the original Christ the King church in Bellingham in the 1990s, is now a Windermere Real Estate agent. But he never gave up his passion for pastoring. About two years ago, a Sunday evening Bible study started up, meeting in the Nooksack Valley grade school. That arrangement continued until last fall, Mason said, when the group, as Nooksack Valley Christ Community Church, was able to purchase the 109 W. Third St. building of Faith Christian Fellowship, formerly known as Everson Christian Reformed Church. Faith has ceased operation. Worship at 10 a.m. on Sundays is drawing about 180 people. “It’s outgrown my ability to do it. So we’re looking for a full-time pastor for that church,” Mason said. As a matter of fact, Mason right now is back to doing the Sunday preaching at Christ the King of Bellingham as well. He is there at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., sandwiching in between them the drive out to Everson for preaching at Nooksack Valley Christ Community Church at 10 a.m. “It’s worked, but it’s far outgrown my ability to cover all the bases,” Mason said. Moreover, when a full-time Everson pastor is lined up, Mason will not entirely disappear. “I’ll continue to support that place,” he said. Renovations continue inside the building. A ministry to the middle school age is at 7 p.m. Wednesdays. A time for high schoolers is at 7 p.m. Sundays. This is what the church’s Facebook page says: “Nooksack Valley Christ Community Church is a body of like-minded, Holy Spiritfilled Christian believers who have a heart to win for Christ the people of the Nooksack Valley!” This project is not connected to a satellite church plant effort of North County Christ the King of Lynden that met in the Nooksack Valley High School Performing Arts Center for a time.
Nooksack Valley Christ Community Church, which started as a Sunday evening Bible study two years ago meeting in a school, bought the existing Everson church building at Third and North Washington streets last fall and now meets there. (Calvin Bratt/Lynden Tribune)
