Razz & Shine Variety of entries, and trees’ shade, were big draws in Saturday Lynden show LYNDEN — The number and variety of entries, 275 in all, stretching six blocks from downtown to B.C. Avenue, helped make the Razz & Shine classic car cruise-in on Saturday a big success. It also helped that the big pin oak trees on Front Street provided welcome relief from the 90-degree heat of the day. A 1959 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner owned by Doc Holliday of Bellingham was a hit. Holliday said he bought the car about 10 years ago at a swap meet in Monroe. He has redone the upholstery in it. Holliday turned heads as he operated the Skyliner’s power retractable hardtop and opened the car’s hood and trunk. The car was owned in its first life by a farm couple at Waterville, Washington.
Right: The Ford Fairlane Skyliner was an attention-getter. Below: The 1956 Chevy Belair sports sedan with matching gold radio was also a hit. (Calvin Bratt/Lynden Tribune)

1914 Case car gets the looks in Saturday show Arlyn Plagerman bought it from a restorer’s son in a Canadian town By Calvin Bratt editor@lyndentribune.com
LYNDEN — Arlyn Plagerman was already very familiar with Case tractors, being the owner of more than 20 of them in the local farm equipment collecting fraternity. In the back of his mind, he sought something else — a Case car. “It would just fit with my collection,” he said. “I always kind of wanted one because I knew they existed.” On Saturday, Plagerman could proudly exhibit the object of his dreaming in the Razz & Shine classic car cruise-in of Lynden’s Northwest Raspberry Festival. This was really his first local public showing of the 1914 Case Model 535 touring car he acquired about a year and a half ago. “I was messing with the carburetor to get it to run a little better,” Plagerman said. Even not running, it definitely got lookers in the 275-car show. The Lynden man picked up his relic in the little town of Bashaw in central Alberta, Canada, after seeing it advertised in Case Heritage magazine. A man with a similar love for the historic brand name as Plagerman’s had restored two Case cars. Upon his death about 10 years ago, the cars went, one each, to his two sons. But the fervency of the father for them may not have been passed down. After letting this car sit for eight years without running it, the one inheriting son decided he might as well sell it to a true aficionado. The brother’s car, a 1913 with more brass on it, Plagerman noted, was not for sale. A knowledgeable entrant in Saturday’s Razz & Shine show claimed that only six

(Calvin Bratt/Lynden Tribune) specimens of this 1914 Case car still exist, and three of them are in museums. Plagerman couldn’t dispute the information. One factoid of Case car manufacturing history he does know was posted on a placard: Of the 60,000 cars made by Case from 1910 to 1927, only about 100 still ex-

ist today. Right next to Plagerman’s car on Saturday was a largely unrestored 1930 Model A of brother-in-law Allen Likkel — certainly presenting a stark contrast of have and have-not in auto quality, Likkel noted with a chuckle.

The brand-new Case car cost $1,800 (including the optional $100 windshield) as the era of motoring dawned upon America in the early 1900s. But owning a car was out of reach to most families until Henry Ford determined to put an auto in every driveway for about $400. Eventually

the Ford strategy spelled the end of manufacturers like Case. Although this car has an automatic ignition, the engine could also be handcranked. “It came out with a starter, a big Westinghouse starter, and a generator for the lights,” Plagerman explains. The plant was in Racine, Wisconsin, and Jerome Case was trying to keep his tractor buyers from going anywhere else for their cars as well. Mr. Case got special permission from the Wisconsin legislature to use the eagle frontpiece on the car, Likkel said. It had been the emblem of a revered state regiment that fought in the Civil War and was Jerome Case’s tribute to his father. His own father, George Likkel, sold Case tractors and had a big cast-iron statue version of the eagle out front of the Guide Meridian store until it got stolen one Halloween, Allen Likkel said. He believes the kids who stole it didn’t realize how heavy it would be to whisk away. Plagerman is in a Northwest club of owners of cars at least 100 years old and he may join in an upcoming short trip of the group yet this year, he said.
Features of the 1914 Case are: a long high body, a speedometer on the passenger’s side, and an eagle emblem. (Calvin Bratt/Lynden Tribune)

Jeep unveils new Renegade for SUV ruggedness Popular new vehicle is an SUV, but still has Jeep’s trademark offroad capabilities WHATCOM — Just how popular is the all-new 2016 Jeep Renegade? “We’ve only got one in stock,” Brandon Kowalik at Rairdon’s of Bellingham said Monday. “They’re selling as quickly as we’re (getting them).” The Renegade, released to dealerships this past spring, is Jeep’s first venture into the growing small sport-utility vehicle (SUV) segment, yet remains true to the adventurous lifestyle and 4x4 versatility Jeep is world-renowned for. It offers a best-in-class combination of off-road capability and fuel efficiency, making it an excellent option for maneuvering rugged terrain, downtown city blocks and everything in between. Also, the Renegade, designed in America and crafted in Italy, is one of the smallest SUVs still available in a manual transmission, Kowalik said. “It’s the most capable four-wheel-

Drawing from the all-new Jeep Cherokee, the Renegade offers two of the most advanced and intelligent 4x4 systems in its class, both of which can provide up to 1,475 pounds per feet of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels, resulting in optimum grip. The Renegade also lays claim to being the first Jeep SUV to incorporate Koni’s frequency selective damping (FSD) front and rear strut system, designed to provide precision road control. The vehicle includes up to 70 available advanced safety and security features. Emblematic of the attention to detail given to the Renegade is the array of secret design elements — dubbed “Easter eggs” by some — subtly included into the vehicle’s appearance. For example, somewhat hidden on the rearview mirror housing is a small design of Jeep’s iconic logo: the seven-slot grille surrounded by two lights. “(The vehicle) was designed by a team of engineers that left a stamp on a number of different panels and positions in the car,” Kowalik said. The Renegade comes in four varieties, from least to most expensive: Sports, Latitude, Limited and Trailhawk. Each comes in a diverse range of colors. One of the many features included in the Latitude is cutting-edge interior technology. A five-inch Uconnect Touchscreen

offers hands-free calling, while a ParkView rear backup camera helps provide an extra set of eyes. A primary aspect of both the Limited and Trailhawk Renegades is a 2.4-liter Tigershark engine, which gets more than 30 miles per gallon on the highway. The engine has a class-exclusive nine-speed automatic transmission. The Limited version is where the interior really heads to another level, complete with a seven-inch full-color personalized instrument cluster display. The Limited also has heated leather-trimmed seats, a heated steering wheel and a leatherwrapped shift knob. The Trailhawk has earned Jeep’s “Trail Rated” label and has a Jeep Active Drive Low 4x4 system with a 20:1 crawl ratio and up to 2,000 pounds of towing capability. The Trailhawk has a 0.8-inch lift with offroad suspension and hill descent control. Its wheels are 17 inches and made of aluminum. In addition, the Trailhawk has a classexclusive Selec-Terrain dial, complete with five settings: auto, snow, sand, mud and rock. This allows drivers to tune traction settings according to road conditions, allowing for ideal traction and fuel efficiency. Remade Kia Sorento keeping Smith Kia pleased Redesigned SUV gets bigger for 2016 model By Tim Newcomb tim@lyndentribune.com
WHATCOM — Matt Nichols, a Smith Kia of Bellingham salesperson, said that Kia “hit the nail on the head” in redesigning the Sorento SUV for 2016. “The styling on it looks really good,” he said. The twofold redesign reworked the exterior look of the three-row vehicle — on the V-6 model — that seats seven passengers, all while making it more robust. Nichols says the expanded wheelbase creates more room in the rear for cargo or passengers and the towing capacity has benn bumped up to 5,000 pounds with the V-6 engine. “It is certainly a new body style with a smooth, quiet, comfortable ride,” Nichols said. “They did a good job of continuing the lines all the way around the vehicle from quarter panel to quarter panel. It is a smooth, sleek-looking vehicle.” While a 2016, the new Sorento has been on the Bellingham lots for a few months already, selling well. With small

SUVs rising in popularity of late, Nichols said, outpacing the minivan, which formerly served as the seven-passenger vehicle of choice, companies have continued to enhance their SUV offerings. Kia has added a 240-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine for a third engine in the Sorento’s lineup. The turbo engine falls between the V-6 and 2.4-liter four. A six-speed automatic transmission combines with any of the three engines. Along with the new-look exterior came a new front-suspension geometry and updated rear suspension. Inside, the headroom and loading room increased. Nichols said the standard equipment, 10-year, 100,000-mile warranty and smooth ride have been the main selling features in Whatcom County. The higher-end packages include a bounty of technology upgrades, including a 12-speaker Infinity stereo, navigation on the touch screen, blind-spot cameras, forward-collision warning and plenty more.
