1956 Buick: From boxes to perfection Restored car of Andrew Riggs is Razz & Shine attention-getter By Tim Newcomb tim@lyndentribune.com
LYNDEN — Andrew Riggs beautifies cars for a living, even ones he buys that were once sitting in boxes. The owner of RCR Autobody, located near Pole and Guide Meridian roads, was the talk of the Northwest Raspberry Festival’s Razz & Shine Car Show on Saturday with his smartly dressed 1956 Buick Century Riveria. It was a restoration project he took on simply for the love of building cars. “Building is the fun part,” Riggs said and acknowledged “it is time to get rid of (this one) and do something else.” He joked that cleaning cars isn’t for him. He just wants to build them. But first he wanted to show off the hardtop in Lynden. Riggs spent about the last year working on his Buick, a project that started with all the parts and pieces boxed up. He chose the Buick because the car was the “right price,” a figure likely helped along by the boxed-up nature of the sedan.

“I spend most of my time doing nice cars for other people, so I thought I would do one for myself,” the young autobody expert said. Finding parts, though, for the fourdoor hardtop proved the most challenging part of the project. Riggs, who also teaches at Bellingham Technical College, said it was fun to bring pieces of the car into class and use them as a teaching tool. The bumpers, for example, were all worked on by students. For a little extra spice, Riggs accentuated the hard-top quality of his Buick, creating a “custom-mixed candy” for a little personality on the roof of the car. On Saturday, Riggs said his creation garnered more attention than he was anticipating. Of course, though, he admitted he tends to be a bit more nitpicky with the details than most, so the tiny things he still sees in his Buick weren’t bothering those passing by. With all the highly designed lines and custom colors, how could they?

New windshield technology poses extra challenges Louis Auto Glass is only nationally certified installation company in three counties WHATCOM — Evolving windshield technology makes finding a certified installer even more crucial, claims local company Louis Auto Glass. Some windshields now feature as many as three cameras or sensors (i.e., night vision, rain sensors, heads-up display). All of these technologies are “pretty interesting,” to say the least, says Louis owner Rick Adelstein. Take the heads-up display (HUD), for instance. It’s best to think of your windshield as a transparent screen for infor-
mation. Instead of taking your eyes off the road to check your speed, navigation directions and other details, the HUD system projects the information at eye level onto the windshield. No more glancing down and away at a small GPS screen — it’s all right in front of you. The HUD technology varies according to each system. Some cars use transparent phosphors on the windshield that react when a laser shines on it. When the laser is off, you don’t see anything, but when the light is on, the information is projected onto the glass. Other systems are similar, but incorporate mirrors to project images onto the windshield. Louis Auto Glass is the only installer in Whatcom, Skagit and Island counties certified with the Auto Glass Safety Council, an accredited standards development organization. The standards for glass in-
Wade Onstine and Jim Hayes install new windshields at the Louis Auto Glass shop in Lynden on Monday. (Calvin Bratt/Lynden Tribune) stallation deal with procedures, education and product performance. “It’s important to have a correctly installed windshield, not only so that the technology in the vehicle remains operational, but also to ensure your safety,” Adelstein said. “The windshield provides a significant amount of strength to the structural support in the cabin of the vehicle. For instance, in a front-end collision the windshield provides up to 45 percent of the structural integrity of the cabin of the vehicle and in a rollover, up to 60 percent.” Louis Auto Glass takes this business very seriously, guaranteeing its work 100 percent to customer satisfaction. “We always have and always will,” Adelstein said. The company, with shops in Bellingham, Lynden and Mount Vernon, properly replaces glass on almost any type of vehicle on the road, including specialty vehicles and imports. Having started in 1929, Louis Auto Glass is the second oldest family-owned and -operated glass company still active across the United States. It also enjoys supporting the community in various ways.

A year off brings massive changes to Honda Fit More sporty feel and increased functionality come to 2015 release By Brent Lindquist reporter@lyndentribune.com
WHATCOM — Honda didn’t release a 2014 model of its Fit subcompact, but the year off taught the company a great deal, if the new 2015 Honda Fit is any indication. “They did not make one in 2014 because they had such big plans for the 2015,” Northwest Honda’s John Cabal said. The redesign has brought an air of sportiness and functionality to the Fit, thanks in large part to the options allowed by the car’s seats. This allows for a variety of uses that might not otherwise be available if not for the versatility of the seats. “You can fold the back seats up or down,” Cabal said. “If you fold them up, you could actually put two bicycles in the backseat. If you fold them down, you could sleep in it.” The 2013 Honda Fit didn’t have Bluetooth capabilities. That’s a far cry from the new Fit, which seems to be a technological powerhouse. Features include an eight-inch readout
screen, a rear backup camera and a Lane Watch camera built into the passenger-side mirror. “It’s a good thing for safety purposes,” Cabal said. “You don’t have to look to your right because you can see everything that’s on the right-hand side of you when you turn the right turn signal on.” Cabal said part of where the Fit may get its name is the number of passengers it can fit comfortably. “It seats five comfortably,” Cabal said. “Even big people can sit in the backseat. I think that might have something to do with the name.” The enhanced navigation features don’t even require a fully-loaded model to be used. Cabal said a mobile phone app and a special cable can be purchased, allowing navigation features to be accessed through an owner’s phone. “You don’t have to buy the loaded-up model to get navigation on it,” Cabal said. “You can buy a mid-level Fit and access it.” The Honda Fit comes in three different models: the LX, the EX and the EX-L. All three are available to order at Northwest Honda. “We have the EX and EX-L in currently,” Cabal said. “We sold two LXs over the weekend. We’re going to get more. We’ve got as many on order as we can get. I’m not exaggerating.”

Ready for restoration Nearly 50 years later, son prepares to bring back the old glory of dad’s family car By Tim Newcomb tim@lyndentribune.com
LYNDEN — Despite growing up riding in the Mellema family 1966 Pontiac LeMans Sprint 6, Kevin Mellema had never driven the car until last week when he brought it to the Northwest Raspberry Festival Razz & Shine Car Show. But expect to see a lot more of Mellema behind the wheel of the rare Pontiac, complete with an engine designed by the famed John DeLorean. Even though Mellema was born a year after his dad, Sid, bought the ‘66 from a Pontiac dealer in Lynden, Kevin remembers the car well. By the time he was old enough to drive, though, his older sister had already

taken off with the vehicle. Family members drove it until about 2005 and it has sat in the family barn ever since. Kevin, originally of Lynden but now living in Maple Falls, brought the car out of hiding to get it ready for the Razz Fest show, also a bit of a surprise for his dad. New spark plugs, plug wires and fuel in the tank were enough to get the car running, but it will take a ton more work than that to restore it back “just like it was,” Kevin said. The entire back end of the car, now 48 years old, has water damage issues and there are obvious signs of wear throughout — including simple things such as three of the four hubcaps have gone missing.
“The trunk is rusted out, but for what it is, it is surprisingly good,” he said. Kevin is no stranger to taking old cars and making them look new again. “I like cars and love to have old cars,” he said. His most recent project was fixing up, painting and driving a Firebird. But he sold that and is happy to take on this family-style project. The ‘66 Pontiac LeMans Sprint 6 represented the first year of a new body design and in a day when muscle-car V8 engines were all the rage, Kevin said. This was the beginning of the six-cylinder overhead-cam, four-barrel carburetor. With DeLorean the architect of the engine, the ‘66 has a rare quality to it, similar to a son restoring the old family car.

Running on empty — how far can you really go? It’s best to refill at a quarter tank Whether intentional or purely circumstantial, it’s likely that most experienced drivers have seen the low-fuel light illuminate their vehicle’s dashboard at least once. For some drivers, the fuel light is a source of anxiety as they search for the closest gas station. For others, it can be a bragging right, proudly boasting how far they push

their gas tanks to the limit. It’s no secret that an automobile can continue to run after the fuel light comes on, but should drivers rely on the extra mileage it allows? For traveling musician Chris Jones, 30, of Sioux Falls, S.D., seeing the fuel light on his dashboard usually comes as no surprise. Jones, a professional graphic designer during the week, travels with his band across North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska and Iowa nearly every weekend of

the year. “I’m constantly driving across the Midwest with my band, and I run low on gas more often than I should admit,” Jones said. “It seems the gas light always comes on when I’ve just passed the last gas station for miles. Considering the areas where I travel, I get pretty nervous about running out of gas on the side of a remote highway. It’s not a good feeling, but I think we’ve all been there.” It’s likely most drivers would agree that the fuel light often comes on at inopportune times. Stuck in traffic on a freeway; running late for an important appointment; or driving on a country road with no towns or gas stations in sight, is when drivers decide to push the fuel gauge past the ‘E’ signal. Some popular car models can make it between 30 and 50 miles after the fuel light goes on, according to a study by Pick Analysis. The average Chevrolet Silverado will continue for about 33 miles beyond empty. Smaller cars like the Volkswagen Jetta average about 43 miles and the Toyota Corolla tops the list at 47 miles. Knowing how far a vehicle can drive with low fuel may be reassuring, but the effects of low-fuel driving can be damaging to the car. “When you’re running low on gas, it’s
best not to push your luck,” said Neil Hoff, a refined fuels specialist with CHS, which supplies more than 1,400 Cenex branded gas stations. “Stopping to fill up before your gas gauge hits ‘E’ could save you stress, damage to your car and time spent on the side of the road.” Hoff explains that by allowing a car to run on empty, dirt and contaminants are more likely to become suspended in the fuel and block the fuel filter. When fuel is extremely low, the fuel pump is no longer suspended in fuel and can overheat. In some cases, low fuel can even affect power steering and brakes. To avoid an expensive trip to a mechanic, Hoff advises taking a proactive approach to fueling, advising drivers to always keep the gas tank at least one-quarter full. Running out of gas in heavy traffic is not only inconvenient but also dangerous, so Hoff recommends fueling up before getting on highways or major roads. Also, becoming familiar with where gas stations are along a driving route will also help prevent running out of gas on long trips. Always keep a gas can in the trunk in case of emergencies. “Keeping your car fueled is cheaper and safer, in the long run, than driving on empty,” Hoff said.

The sleeker the better for new Chrysler offering New Chrysler 200 provides European look and has plenty of cool features By Braulio Perez sports@lyndentribune.com
BELLINGHAM — For years, Chrysler has had an uphill climb to stay competitive with Honda, Hyundai and others. However, for 2015 the new Chrysler 200 is taking the automobile market by storm and puts Chrysler back into the ball game with its competitors, said Aldo Huerta, Rairdon Chrysler Dodge Jeep of Bellingham sales consultant.
“It’s a really cool car with a lot of great features,” Huerta said. “The biggest change you’ll see is appearance-wise. Now Chrysler is owned 100 percent by Fiat, so it’s going to have a European design. It’s a lot sleeker and looks better. “It's got a 3.6-liter V6, 295-horsepower. That’s been in there a couple years, but a big difference is there’s a nine-speed transmission. So now you’re getting close to 300 horsepower, but you’re getting good fuel economy too. You can get the 3.6-liter V6 engine, or the 2.4 liter four-cylinder.” With the 2.4-liter front-wheel drive, you can get up to 36 miles per gallon. This is the vehicle customers will purchase if they don’t necessarily care too much about power, but prefer the better fuel, Huerta said. Another option is the 3.6-liter, which

gets up to 32 miles per gallon. With this model, you get the 295 horsepower. Lastly, there’s the all-wheel-drive option, which gets up to 30 miles per gallon. Don’t forget about the inside of the vehicle, though, Huerta said. The interior alone has won multiple awards this year,” he said. “It’s in the top 10 in different categories with really nice cars. I’m talking the cars that are around $200,000 to $300,000, like the Bugatti. “Instead of the console to put the car into park, neutral, drive and more, we now have an E-Shifter, which is like a small dial to put the car into gear. It eliminates space and gives the consumer a lot more room and a sleeker design. It’s literally a dial and you just switch it. It’s like a cabin right in the middle and it looks nice.” What about from an entertainment standpoint?

“It comes with an Alpine sound system and we have an 8.4-inch touch screen,” Huerta said. “You get AM/FM and Sirius XM satellite radio free for a year. The navigation system is Garmin, which is really easy to use.” Early on, the numbers for the 2015 Chrysler 200 have been positive. “We’ve been selling good,” Huerta said. “It’s a smaller market here in Bellingham, of course, but our 200 has been selling really good in the more popular areas like Seattle. “Our biggest competition will be the Honda Accord and Hyundai Sonata, but it’s been selling pretty good and we’re hoping to see a trend going into the winter where people are going to want a mid-size sedan in that all-wheel drive. Here in Bellingham it’s not necessarily a must-have, but it’s definitely needed at times.”
