‘A Space that Works for Us’

Mark and Irene Hicks, at point of life change, worked with others to blend their ideas into a dream home Birch Street site is rich with wood colors, stone and slate — even four cupolas By Calvin Bratt editor@lyndentribune.com
LYNDEN — Mark and Irene Hicks knew they were at a point of change in
their lives, and they decided a new house should be part of it. Three of their four children are now out of the nest, leaving mom and dad to contemplate some new possibilities down the road, such as grandchildren eventually arriving and also doing more hosting in their home. “It was time to build a space that works for us,” Irene said. The result? A spacious, open and mostly ground-level house tucked at the end of private Birch Street. The Hicks moved into it in early August, even as some finishing touches were still to be done on the outside, such as landscaping and four rooftop cupolas. Yes, the cupolas (one with a weather vane), abundant wood trim, and red and gray paint are meant to hint of a farmstead
theme. The couple is delighted with the end product of designer Mark Oullette, builder Curt Tinklenberg and all of the suppliers and subcontractors involved. “We appreciate that he did everything right,” Mark said of general contractor Tinklenberg, “He doesn’t cut corners, that’s for sure,” added Irene. Mark, as a sales consultant to food companies, is frequently on the road and so could gather ideas of what he would want in a dream home. They also looked at plenty of magazines. He and Irene had been working out their preferences for a while before actual construction began a year ago. Their objective was an open and welcoming layout, with lots of “earthy” elements and “the warm feel of wood,” as in
a farmhouse. The goal is accomplished with stone, slate and natural wood grains evident everywhere as one walks in and around this home. “Our goal was to have more of the classic feel, that you wouldn’t be able to say it’s (built in) 2016,” Irene said. “A new old-looking house,” Mark said. And, of course, there had to be easy accessibility throughout. “A primary thing for us was that it flowed completely from the front door to the back patio, no steps,” Mark said. The Hicks had to deal with a somewhat irregular half-acre lot, to start with. This is the last piece of a 1980s plat now fully surrounded by other homes. They had to add about 10 feet of fill in places to get it to level grade. The couple brought their ideas of

Mark Hicks enjoys having the back patio area to come home to after traveling for his job, and also for hosting large groups. (Ashley Hiruko/Lynden Tribune) creative layout, then let Oullette walk the property and share his thoughts, and it was surprising to them how consistently it all lined up. “It worked out well that we were of the same mind,” Irene said. The main house is one pod, and then the three-stall garage (and Mark’s work
area) and the master bedroom suite are flanking units at an angle on either side, each connected by a breezeway corridor to the center. It ends up with the patio — they don’t mind calling it their favorite spot — feeling enclosed by the two wings. Oullette agrees everyone worked to-
gether well to fit the house suitably to the site. “The wrap-around configuration with the covered outdoor living area makes for an intimate space,” he elaborated. “The timber frame elements, stone work and double-sided fireplace add warmth. The
overall effect is a comfortable lodge-style home. The red barn-style wings for the garage and master bedroom break up the mass of the home and create a vignette that adds both depth and an element of fun.” Tinklenberg, with a lifetime of build-

Fir wood in the Hicks house is highlighted in its natural beauty by a clear finish. Flooring is a mix of hardwood, slate and carpet. (Ashley Hiruko/Lynden Tribune) ing experience locally, took care of site preparation and all the concrete and framing aspects. That included having exposed structural beams that add much to the open ambience of the house. These, as well as the interior trim, all in fir, were treated with a clear finish bring-
ing out the natural qualities of the wood. The place is replete with cultured stone in the big inside/outside fireplace as well as across the front exterior. Flooring as well as lighting became a showcase for Fishtrap Creek Interiors. Especially notable underfoot is the multi-
colored Brazilian rustic slate in bathrooms, breezeway and utility, to go with Italian porcelain tile in the shower area. Carpet softens the sleeping quarters. In fact, Fishtrap Creek was deeply involved in the overall planning process with the Hicks, “so everything will blend
and coordinate,” said Shelley VersteegSmit. “That’s what we do with all the houses we start with,” said the business owner. Those facets included interior and exterior lighting, paint colors, cabinet design, surfaces and flooring.

A chandelier and all lighting, cabinetry, flooring and more was coordinated through Fishtrap Creek Interiors of Lynden. (Ashley Hiruko/Lynden Tribune) A room just inside the front door functions as a home office for Mark. The corridor to the master suite serves as a gallery for family photos. A copper sink in the kitchen is an attention-getter. Mark located it from a company in Mexico. What stairs there are — to two guest rooms above the big garage and to the
basement and its family rooms — feature Douglas fir railings and black aluminum balusters. Son Caleb is in high school and still at home; son Daniel has just started college, and will be home at times. At a few points, Mark Hicks brought his own construction skills into play — or refreshed them. He is the one who obtained and laid the hardwood flooring
across the large main gathering and dining area. And when both time and skilled labor seemed a little short in the summer, Mark and one of his sons put up the nearly 350 feet of cedar fence around the perimeter of the lot. The way the house is laid out, Mark’s hobby and vehicle space is tucked around to the back while Irene gets a cute “pock-
et” parking spot that blends nicely into the overall front. But the “barn red” paint color, as well as those cupolas on metal roof, do definitely bring your attention back to the two wing sections. It was Ken Faber who had the painting honors on the outside — two shades of gray on the main house — while K&K Painting worked inside.

Cabinetry came from Interior Doors & More. Appliances were from DeWaard & Bode. The variety of furnishings are credit of Colony House. And Vander Griend Lumber supplied the windows and exterior surfaces, which are a mixture of lap siding, barnboard and shingles. Tinklenberg is responsible for the stamped concrete craftsmanship exhibited widely around the Hicks house. Whatcom Landscapes will do its work yet this fall. They have been in Lynden for 18 years, raising their children here as well, and it feels good to now settle into a place they can say is their own, from conception to completion, Mark and Irene say. Already within their first few weeks of moving in, they had hosted a group of about 40 at the house, with the back patio of course a key gathering point. “It took longer than we had been thinking, but we are thankful for the finished result,” he said. “It was a unique house to do, definitely a custom house,” Tinklenberg said. “It was good to work with them.” “I like the style of that house. We mixed it up a little bit so you get that ‘wow’ factor,” Versteeg-Smit said, summarizing. “It was a year in progress. We had a blast getting to know them and working on this house.”

Deck Escape Six ideas to create your own deck escape No longer simply a rectangle attached to the back of your home, today’s decks are built in creative designs to make them an ideal place to relax and de-stress. Here are six simple ideas that allow you to use the workability of modern

elaborate fountain, adding a water feature to your deck is an ideal way to enhance its appeal. With its clear beauty and gentle, flowing sound, water is uniquely soothing. Simply fill a wine barrel or pot with water and a few aquatic plants — and maybe some fish — for a signature piece on your deck. An affordable pump kit installed in one of these containers provides a fast and easy way to add the mystique of flowing water. 3. Landscape for the perfect escape To create an ultra-inviting deckescape, integrate landscaping into your design. This could be as simple as adding a few planters with fragrant flowers to soothe your senses, or as comprehensive as turning your deck into an extension of your garden by working your deck design specifically around trees or shrubs.

or ferns for a relaxing green backdrop, or add flowers for a pop of your favorite colors. You can even plant herbs for a tasty addition to your grilled recipes.
4. Raise the curtain on elegant design Suspending fabric over your deck is another simple, low-cost way to create an inviting retreat space. Fabric can be hung in a straight line or draped from an overhead hoop, pergola or trellis to create a private canopy. Patterned fabrics showcase your personal taste and offer welcome shade, while sheer fabrics add elegance and provide a balance between privacy and preserving views.
6. Get on board with a boardwalk For the ultimate escape from the everyday routine, build a low-lying boardwalk that leads from your deck to a secret retreat hidden by hedges, shrubs or lattice screens. This retreat space does not have to be over-the-top. It can be as simple as a small platform deck with a comfortable chair or hammock. To create your boardwalk to paradise, again look for composite decking brands that can be installed with ground and water contact. “High-performance composites won’t rot, crack or fail even when fully submerged,” said Brent Gwatney, senior vice president of MoistureShield composite decking. “Some composites are even made with up to 95 percent recycled content, so you can rest well knowing you’ve made an environmentally-friendly choice.”

5. Achieve offthe-wall creativity with a planted wall A fun and unusual way to create an open-air retreat is a wall of plants. For decks attached to the house, hanging planters along the height and width of an adjacent wall creates a dramatic visual. Or a simple freestanding wall along one of the deck’s edges can be built for hanging plants. Choose leafy plants like elephant ears

Kent's offers perennials of all kinds Trees, cover plantings, daisies, day lilies all options for late-year gardening By Brent Lindquist news@ferndalerecord.com
Ferndale resident Donna Klix shops at Kent's Garden & Nursery.
FERNDALE — Whatcom County’s weather becomes a lot colder and a lot rainier in the fall and winter, but that doesn’t mean that planting and gardening needs to halt. “A lot of people like to plant later in the season,” said Lynn Pearson, retail manager at Kent’s Garden & Nursery in Ferndale. “Putting in hedges and ground cover is a big thing that a lot of people like to do.” Once these plants develop their roots, they will continue to root all winter long, meaning gardeners don’t need to be outside watering with a hose throughout the season. “It’s an easier time to get some of your bigger plantings done,” Pearson said. Trees and hedges are great options for late-year plantings, and the Pacific North-

Trees are an ideal planting option when the weather gets cold. (Ashley Hiruko/Lynden Tribune) west is generally a good spot for late-season plantings due to fewer hard freezes than occur in other parts of the country. Any perennial variety that needs dividing, such as daisies, day lilies and rud-
beckias are good fall options. At nurseries like Kent’s, hedging materials are put in stock around November, because growers can’t dig these trees until the weather becomes colder.
Overall, trees and hedges are solid options for planting in the winter, and ground cover plants as well. Visit Kent’s Garden, located at 5428 Northwest Rd. near Ferndale, for more
information. Kent’s features a variety of products and services including a shade house, trees, ground covers, perennials, herbs, unique pots and gifts, sculptures, garden art and more.

LYNDEN — Henry Klos is the owner and operator of True North Cleaning Professionals, a business specializing in carpet and upholstery cleaning. Oct. 1 will mark one year since starting in 2015. Klos and his family have spent over 20 years in the area. He is originally from Manitoba, Canada, and first came to the county for a job assignment in 1994. After 30 years of work in sales and management, Klos and his wife decided they wanted to venture into a business of their own. They settled on a carpet cleaning service that would use the same customer service principles he learned from both his personal experience and his father. Klos grew up in a grocery store and witnessed his father delivering customer service day in and day out. It’s these early experiences that helped to shape his profound sense of what makes customers happy. “What do people want? What do they expect?” Klos said. “That’s what you should be delivering every day without being asked.” Although it was hard to get his name out at first, by early 2016 his business had taken off. The biggest hurdle in starting his own business was learning the chemistry of detergents, dirt, spots and stains on various floor types. “I can see why small businesses are called the backbone of America,” Klos said. “There’s so many small businesses going about their work quietly in the background, and what it adds to the overall economy is fairly significant.”

A closer look at American hardwoods The credibility of the past still holds up solid today in home building As home improvement projects take center stage, the search is on for products that will enhance rather than jeopardize the health and well-being of our families and loved ones. Products made from American hardwoods have been the natural choice for healthy home and work environments for generations. It continues to be true today. With so many options available in the current marketplace, Linda Jovanovich of the American Hardwood Information Center suggests doing a little more research to separate product fact from fiction on this topic. “Health-conscious and environmentally responsible consumers are challenged to recognize products and materials that are both aesthetically appealing and safe,” she said. “I encourage taking a closer look at U.S. products — especially flooring and cabinetry, furniture and moulding — made from American hardwoods. They’re uniquely beautiful, safe and a friend to the environment. And they have the credentials to prove it.” Treasured for generations, and forever fresh Enhancing surroundings with products made from American hardwoods is a wise choice and a sound investment. In the kitchen or the bath, over the fireplace or on the floor, the sheer beauty, durability and timeless appeal of the products make a lasting statement. You can paint it, stain it, repair it, refinish it, walk on it, restore it, love it, refresh it! The possibilities are endless.
American Hardwood products are uniquely beautiful, responsibly manufactured, and conducive to good health. (Courtesy photo)
Made in the U.S.A. There is much to consider before making a purchase in today’s marketplace. What’s the product’s origin? Is it made of natural materials or is it a synthetic product steeped with chemicals and potential carcinogens? What health and/or environmental implications will its manufacturing process have? In the U.S., quality standards and manufacturing practices are regulated and monitored by U.S. agencies and associations. Consumers can confidently choose products made from all natural American hardwoods knowing that the hardwood has been responsibly harvested and that manufacturing quality control standards have been met. A friend to the environment
Flash back to seventh grade biology for a memory refresher about photosynthesis and long-term carbon sequestration. • Growing trees remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, separate the carbon and oxygen atoms, then return the oxygen to the air. • They use just the right amount of carbon to grow trunk, branches and leaves, and store or sequester the unused carbon for the life of the tree or the products made thereof. That means using all natural American hardwoods for products like flooring and cabinetry, furniture and moulding contributes to the long-term sequestration of carbon. Sustainability For centuries, products made from
American hardwoods have been providing lasting beauty, warmth and functional value to our homes and countless structures everywhere. Future generations can expect the same. The U.S. Forest Service reports that the volume of hardwoods in American forests today is 131 percent greater than it was in 1953 because more than twice as much hardwood grows each year as is harvested. That’s sustainability in a nutshell. We are not running out of trees. Hardwoods are an abundant, renewing and sustainable resource. Reacquaint yourself with the world of American Hardwoods at www.HardwoodInfo.com. Take a close look at the myriad of products made from this natural and healthy, uniquely beautiful, responsibly harvested and more-abundant-than-ever resource.

FALL HOME & GARDEN
Curb: Emphasize your home your home’s exterior? Adding or repairing a fence on your property is a great value with a relatively small investment. In order to determine the perfect fence design for your home, you should first consider the end function you are most concerned with, such as curb appeal, protection from the elements or privacy. While building or repairing a fence can definitely be a do-it-yourself project you tackle on your own, many homeowners struggle trying to ensure their fence gate is sag-free and square. A home improvement retailer can introduce you to a Homax EASYGATE No-Sag Gate Kit to reduce sagging and maintain use and longevity over time. The kit includes everything you’ll need to build a custom sized gate, add to a pre-fab gate application or repair a sagging gate.

One tip is to match your garage door with your home’s base color or front door color, especially if it’s a dominant part of the front facade. You can also beautifully highlight the architectural beauty of your garage door by incorporating one of your home’s accent or trim colors for an additional point of interest.
One simple update can be made by coordinating window trim paint color with your landscaping.
Emphasize your home’s best features Updating window and door trim is a great way to enhance your home’s look, style and personality. One simple update can be made by coordinating window trim paint color with your landscaping, window boxes or fence for an integrated look. Painting is one of the most cost-effective ways to update and protect the exterior of your home, with many retailers offering paint under $30 per gallon. The color of a home’s exterior features, such as fences and window boxes, should also be considered when choosing plants to landscape for added curb appeal. Mix things up and strive for four-season color. Also, be sure to group your plants so they have plenty of room to spread out. Research how tall and wide the mature plants will be. In addition to your fence and trim, shutters are an important exterior feature
