Communities alive with holiday activities It’s a big busy weekend coming up Dec. 1-4, and beyond, full of the spirit of the holidays. Take your pick among the many activities, and then go out and enjoy! THIS WEEKEND’S ACTIVITIES: EVERSON & NOOKSACK • Santa and his elves come to town on Friday, Dec. 1. Bring the family and join in the festival fun at Everson City Park, starting at 6 p.m. The first 175 kids get goodie bags, there is free hot chocolate for all and Cramer Classics provides free wagon rides. Also, vendors will sell (cash only) hot dogs, baked goods, Christmas wreaths, home decor and accessories. A sale of kids’ Christmas books during the Winter Festival is a great opportunity for parents and grandparents to find gifts! • The 34th annual Silver Tea, hosted by Friends of the Everson McBeath Community Library, is at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, in the library, 104 Kirsch Dr. LYNDEN • “Scrooge The Musical” is the holiday show through Dec. 10 at the Claire vg Thomas Theatre, 655 Front St., Lynden. It’s an adaptation of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” Stage times are 7:30 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays (double performances Dec. 9). Tickets for adults $14, students and seniors $12. The theatre box office is open from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, call to 360-354-4425; online at www. theclaire.org. • The Lynden Choral Society performs Handel’s “Messiah” twice — at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, and at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2 — in Third Christian Reformed Church, 514 Liberty St. The Starry Night Orchestra accompanies, and the soloists are Katie VanKooten-Weeda, Charles Robert Stephens and Ethan Neff. A $20 donation is suggested. • Open to all, the holiday pancake breakfast of the Lyn-
Sinterklaas’s annual visit (above) and the Lighted Christmas Parade are both big draws in Lynden during the holiday season.
den Community Center, 401 Grover St., will be on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Adults $6 adults, children $3. Take photos with Santa and expect Christmas carolers too. • Ebenezer Christian School again has its wreath and bake sale from 10 a.m. to

2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, in the North County Kids Place on the east side of the Fairway Center. • A Holiday Art Market of at least 20 artists is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, in the Jansen Art Center, 321 Front St. • Elf on the Shelf is a
scavenger hunt sponsored by the Lynden Downtown Business Association from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The goal is to find all 12 hidden elves in order to be entered into the Present Dash. Sign in at the Edward Jones office, 517 Front St., to get rules and clues (and page

reindeer antlers if you’re one of the first 200 participants!), then walk around the shops on Front Street to track down any Elf on the Shelf. All entries must be in by 5 p.m. This is free and open to all ages. The winner will be announced at the Christmas tree lighting ceremony at 5:30 p.m. (you must be present to be the lucky person). Last year, the prize was over $1,200 worth of gifts for the whole family — this year, it’s a mystery until you win it! • The community Christmas tree will be at the corner of Front and Fourth streets. From 5 to 6 p.m. join in the festivities of singing Christmas carols, seeing the big tree lit and hearing who won Elf on the Shelf. • Sinterklaas carries on the Dutch tradition in Lynden, welcoming children and giving out treats in the lobby of The Inn at Lynden on Fifth Street. This will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon, Dec. 2. • The ever-popular Lighted Christmas Parade is on Saturday, Dec. 2, at 6 p.m., with Edaleen Dairy as the title sponsor. Now in its 27th year, this is a unique dazzling display of lights on vehicles and floats that certainly brightens up everyone and everything along the Front Street route. The business and organization entrants, showing off their creativity, compete for top honors in several categories. Usually vendors are part of the scene. • The singers of Lynden churches do a Christmas cantata, “Come to the Manger,” with a full orchestra at 4 and 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, in Third Christian Reformed Church, 514 Liberty St. An offering goes to the Lighthouse Mission. Go to www.lynden.org for full list of Lynden activites. SUMAS • Christmas in the Park is the vintage holiday event for Sumas. Presented by American Legion Post 212, this is in City Park starting around 6:45 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4. The tradition brings a Christmas tree lighting, hot page

ReadersCare
The Lynden Tribune is excited to once again give our readers the opportunity to join us in helping those families and individuals most in need during this holiday season. This year we have selected three grant recipients; Project Hope and the Lynden Food Bank, the Everson/Nooksack Valley Food Bank and the Lynden Community Senior Center. These wonderful organizations provide invaluable services to our communities and we are glad to do our part. This year we are again proudly partnering with the Mount Baker Rotary Foundation. For each gift, a ‘thank you’ letter will be provided to each donor acknowledging the tax deductibility of their gift. The Lynden Tribune covers all the administrative costs of the program so that 100% of each gift to the Fund is passed along to these organizations. Thank you for your time and your consideration and we hope you’ll join us in our 12th annual Readers Care Fund effort this year. Mount Baker Administered by: Sincerely, Rotary Foundation

Classic Candied Pecans Fill a mason jar with these for a great gift. 1 Tablespoon water ½ teaspoon vanilla 1 egg white ½ cup granulated sugar ½ cup brown sugar ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon 8 oz pecan halves Preheat oven to 250°F Whisk together water, egg white and vanilla. Add pecans and toss to coat. In a separate bowl, mix sugars, salt and cinnamon until thoroughly combined. Add coated pecans to dry mixture and toss to coat.
