dale. Their family home was one of a few in town with a special fire phone installed. Even at an early age, the children in the family learned to handle calls and record the information for dispatch. They could then activate the siren that gave local volunteers an audio warning that an emergency was occurring. They would then head to the station to pick up the information, suit up and head to the fire. But Don, who started in 1956 and retired in 2004, was only the second generation of Moyes family members to volunteer. His father Shorty was a stalwart of early 20th century firefighting in Ferndale. Moyes family tradition of firefighting runs four generations at Ferndale By Mark Reimers news@ferndalerecord.com
FERNDALE — When Kevin Moyes decided to pursue a law enforcement career, it led him to return to his native Ferndale. It also allowed him to be in the third generation of firefighters in the family when he started volunteering for Whatcom County Fire District 7 in 1991. His brother Brian had already been at it for five years. Brian and Kevin have historic standards to live up to. Kevin remembers growing up with his father Don in Fern-
on Washington Street showing Shorty Moyes in 1938. Don is visible as a young boy in the same photo. Three generations in firefighting, while significant, isn’t unheard of. Chief Gary Russell himself is the second of three generations of local firefighters. But the Moyes family tradition now doesn’t stop with Kevin and Brian. Kevin’s daughter Tiffany, a senior at Ferndale High School, is currently a firefighter cadet with the district and intends to pursue emergency response as a career. That means she will head to the training academy once she graduates and may not remain in the local district. Still, the local commitment of one family has Russell tipping his hat. “From my perspective, that’s what volunteerism is all about,” Russell said. “From Shorty all the way through Don and his two sons, you start counting service years and it’s an important part of their
Kevin Moyes
heritage. You have to admire the number of years people donated to community.” Russell notes that Don and Shorty’s service years were at a time when there wasn’t as much equipment and technology to work with. “It was just volunteering and doing a good job with what you had,” Russell said. But despite the better equipment, today’s volunteers also face a significant challenge to keep up their training to the same professional standards as career personnel. Kevin admits that his early exposure to serious emergencies made his choice to volunteer a natural one. “I was with my dad and would end up driving to scenes with him, whether they were fire or medical emergency,” Kevin said. “Sometimes there were toes cut off and you’d have to help look for them.” Kevin initially considered a career in medicine before ending up in law enforcement.
