PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center My stomach and back often hurt after I eat fatty foods like pizza. Sometimes I even feel nauseated. What causes this?

The symptoms you describe are often related to a gallbladder attack. The gallbladder is located in the right upper abdomen beneath the liver and holds bile, a fluid secreted by the liver. When water is extracted from the bile, the material left behind can harden into gallstones.

While there are often no symptoms of gallstones, occasionally following a fatty meal the gallstones cause pain in the gallbladder, radiating to the back. This is known as a gallbladder attack.

If you are diagnosed with gallbladder disease, there are options for treatment. If you have mild symptoms or it’s your first gallstone attack, your provider may simply prescribe pain medication. If you have more severe symptoms or you have had multiple attacks, surgery may be required. Today most gallbladder surgery is performed laparoscopically, using minimally invasive surgical techniques. This type of surgery may result in less pain and quicker recovery.

I have an oddly shaped mole on my shoulder. How do I know if I should have it checked?

Since skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, it is a good idea to keep an eye on any moles that seem suspicious. If you have noticed new moles or have a family history of melanoma, performing regular monthly examinations of your body is recommended.

Use a mirror to examine your skin, paying close attention to any areas that are exposed to the sun, such as the hands, chest, arms, nose, ears, neck, and face. When you are analyzing spots on your skin, watch for the ABCDEs of skin cancer.

Asymmetry: when sides of the mole don’t match.

Border: edges of the mole are irregular or blurred.

Color: surface of the mole is different colors or different shades of brown, black, tan, white, or red.

Diameter: the mole is larger than a pencil eraser.

Evolving: the mole is changing in size, shape, or color.

If you notice a mole changing shape or color, becoming itchy or painful, or bleeding, schedule an exam with your dermatologist right away.

Mt. Baker Vision Clinic When should children have their first eye exam?

Most professional eye organizations recommend a child have their first eye exam by five years old. However, if you suspect a problem with your child’s eyes, exams can be done at any age, including soon after birth.

Should my children wear sunglasses?

Experts say 50 percent of our lifetime exposure to UV rays may occur by age 18. Given that cumulative UV damage to eyes causes diseases like cataracts and macular degeneration later in life, make sure your kids’ eyes are protected from the sun with good quality glasses.

PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center I’ve heard that there are new guidelines for taking medication for high cholesterol. Do I need to be taking this medication?

In late 2013, the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology published new guidelines to help determine the best ways to prevent heart attack and stroke. The new guidelines no longer recommend that patients shoot for a target cholesterol level but instead recommend options based on individual risk factors.

A risk calculator was also developed to help estimate a person’s risk of heart attack and stroke.

For patients whose estimated risk falls in the top third of adults, the guidelines suggest considering statin medications as part of the treatment plan. Statins are a group of cholesterol lowering medications that have been found to prevent cardiovascular disease in people who are at high risk for heart attack. Often, though, the first line of treatment is a change in lifestyle to include healthy foods and plenty of exercise, which you can begin today.

If you have concerns about your heart health or have a family history of heart attack or stroke, work with your doctor to estimate your risk and create an individualized treatment plan.

How can I get my kids to put down the screens and move more?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity rates have tripled since the 1980s. Many experts say screen time—including television, computers, cellphones, tablets, and gaming is a major contributor.

Whether or not your child is obese, it is a good idea to help him or her cut down on screen time. Finding fun, healthy alternatives is key. Try these options to help your child get moving.

Have family fun. It is important to model healthy behavior for your children and get them engaged. Taking a family walk after dinner or cranking up the music for an impromptu dance party in the living room are great ways to get moving together.

Join a sports team. Whether your child is chasing a soccer ball or doing laps with the swim team, joining a team ensures that your child will be moving more and regularly engaging in healthy activities with his or her peers.

Bring along a friend. If you’re heading to the ice rink, the rock climbing gym, or the nearest park, bringing a friend along doubles the fun for your children. Making exercise a fun part of your day makes it more likely that everyone will want to keep moving and put down the screens a little more often.

Lamphere Insurance, Financial & Estate Planning Medicare Health Coverage Question: I’m eligible for Medicare and...I got a letter from my Doctor’s Group recommending that I contact an Insurance Broker in another town. Do I have to call them in order to get a health plan to go with Medicare?

Absolutely not!!

We frequently have clients who bring a letter like this to our office. They are upset that they received the letter, which they believe gives them no choice but to go with an out-of-town agency.

Cascade Prosthetics & Orthotics Why do some prosthetic legs look real “life-like” and others look like pipes (aka pylons)?

It’s a personal preference of each patient on how they would like their prosthesis finished. A cosmetic cover hides the pylon which attaches the foot to the socket.

A foam block is formed over the pylon and shaped to match the patient’s other leg. Covers are cosmetically appealing but add weight and cost to the prosthesis.

What is the difference between regular shoes and diabetic shoes?

Diabetic shoes have more room in the toe box area than a standard shoe. The extra depth shoes help to accommodate the cushioned foot orthotics typically used with diabetic shoes. The added depth and choice of widths help with foot deformities such as hammer toes, arthritic changes and Charcot feet.

YMCA CYCLING PACKS A PUNCH FOR PEOPLE WITH PARKINSON’S It has often been said that if the benefits of exercise were available in the form of a pill, it would be the most widely prescribed pill in the world. Most of us are familiar with common benefits of regular exercise including lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, weight control, improved sleep, stronger bones and muscles, better balance and more. But for people with Parkinson’s disease (PD), the simple act of pedaling a bicycle at 80-90 revolutions per minute (rpm) over a period of time may reduce PD symptoms by as much as 35%. That’s a benefit that’s hard to beat!

Parkinson’s afflicts about 5% of the population, and is not yet curable. Any program that can help so many people for such a relatively low cost is of great benefit to the community.”

Pedaling for Parkinson’s is free for Y members. PD patients must sign an informed consent and have a medical release signed by their neurologist. All classes are well-attended by PD patients who pedal together on a regular basis. Most see a change in their symptoms, but many enjoy social support and friendships that come with participating. Some find they have been able to return to activities they had given up such as golf or hiking in the mountains.

Tore Ofteness wrote, “Yesterday, to celebrate my 70th birthday, my wife Joan and I hiked for 10 miles on the rugged Ptarmigan Ridge Trail in the Mount Baker Wilderness Area.

This was not possible a year ago. I tried, but only got half the distance we did yesterday. I believe the Pedaling for Parkinson’s program at the Y is the main reason for this change. At this time last year, my stamina was much less than today and other symptoms of Parkinson’s were more apparent. Currently, these symptoms are much diminished.
