NWEC - Northwest Eye Clinic What exactly is a cataract? Everyone is born with a lens in their eye which helps focus an image on the retina. It is located behind the iris which is the colored part of the eye. As we age, the lens becomes less flexible which is why most people need reading glasses when they get older. The lens also becomes cloudy like a dirty window. Cataract surgery replaces the dirty window with a new clear window called an intraocular lens (IOL). Will I need glasses after cataract surgery? Most patients will still need glasses after surgery, but the vision should be clearer with glasses and patients may be able to wear glasses less often. Over 90% of patients elect to have a monofocal IOL placed which has one focal point. These lenses have one focal area that is clear and most patients elect to have distance vision clear, understanding that they will need glasses to see up close. Some patients choose the opposite and have their near vision clear, but need to wear glasses to see in the distance.
What are Premium Lenses? These come in two categories; IOLs that correct for astigmatism (A-IOL) and IOLs that correct for presbyopia (P-IOL). These IOLs are designed to reduce a patient’s dependence on wearing glasses. In other words, patients who do not want to wear glasses or want to wear glasses less should consider these lenses. Insurance companies do not cover the cost, and Premium lenses can cost up to a few thousand dollars per eye depending on the lens. Am I a candidate for a Premium Lens? If a patient is considering a Premium Lens, we will discuss his/her needs and desires and if a Premium Lens can meet his/her expectations. These lenses are contraindicated in some patients that have other eye diseases involving the tear film, the cornea or the retina. Will my vision be 20/20 after cataract surgery? This depends on whether or not the patient has other eye problems that may be limiting vision such as dry eye, glaucoma or retinal disease, to name a few. Most patients have a significant improvement after cataract surgery and without other eye diseases many patients can see close to 20/20 with new glasses.

Visiting Angels My parents are at the point of needing help in their home. This is new and uncharted territory for us. How do you go about finding caregivers to work with people like my parents? We know that this is a difficult decision to make. We approach this as if it were our home and our parents. In our hiring process we first look for caregivers that have the compassion and skill to do the job. They must have the heart to care like family and the knowledge and ability to give the care. Secondly, caregivers must be dependable. Their dependability has a domino effect, they must show up and be on time! Life has enough challenges without you having to worry about help that doesn’t arrive on time. Finally, a caregiver must be trustworthy. Having someone new in your home can be scary.
That all sounds great. But how do you assure that this is true about your caregivers? At Visiting Angels we not only value these things, we actually test for them. We are the only ones in our area to use a nationally recognized Caregiver Assessment tool that measures for a caregiver’s ability to work well one-on-one, and measures their character for reliability and trustworthiness. And for your peace of mind, we assign a specific Case Manager to meet with you and your family, to get to know them, and the client’s needs. That same Case Manager introduces our caregivers to you on the first visit, as well as monitors the ongoing care.

Graston tools and techniques are 90% effective for breaking up scar tissue to allow healing. Graston tools and techniques require specialized training and are available at ReBound PT, OT, and Hand Therapy. If you have been dealing with tennis elbow for a short or long time, this treatment may be the ticket for your recovery! I heard Rebound Physical Therapy is starting an aquatic program. What are the benefits of aquatic therapy vs. the more traditional land-based setting? Performing therapy in the water provides several added benefits for patients. First, the buoyancy of water decreases weightbearing, putting less stress on joints and bones. This environment allows for earlier mobility and consequently less atrophy of muscles. Second, the water produces a natural resistance to movement ideal for whole-body strengthening. Finally, most patients report a decrease in pain when comparing to landbased exercise, making for a quicker progression and recovery.

Dorsch Family Dental Need a dental crown? Dorsch Family Dental gives you something to smile about. What is a dental crown and what purpose does it serve? A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap, used to completely cover a tooth. Dental crowns are most often used for protecting a tooth when its ongoing health is at risk. What is the procedure like? Traditionally a two-appointment procedure, Dorsch Family Dental uses CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) technology to complete the procedure in just one appointment. Dental offices that don’t offer this technology require patients to attend two appointments for the procedure; a temporary crown is placed at the first appointment and patients return to have it removed and a permanent crown inserted. Tell me more about this technology. CAD/CAM expedites the creation of permanent crowns by allowing Dorsch Family Dental to create them in the office. The digital chairside impressioning system matches the exact shape and size of a patient’s existing tooth. What are the benefits of CAD/CAM? CAD/CAM saves patients time while offering an overall more enjoyable experience. The technology also allows Dorsch Family Dental to preserve more of a patient’s healthy, natural tooth structure.

Monitoring growth and development is an important component of orthodontics. Early treatment may be recommended to help reduce or eliminate more complex orthodontic treatment in the future. Mt. Baker Vision Clinic
Left image: healthy retina; Right image: diffuse retinal hemorrhages and ischemia secondary to uncontrolled type 2 diabetes. How can diabetes and high blood pressure affect my eyes? In 2017 an estimated 10 million Americans will experience vision loss due to uncontrolled diabetes and high blood pressure. There is a strong relationship between cardiovascular health and vision. The cells of the eyes are the most metabolically active cells in our bodies. A complex network of blood vessels provides a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients to these cells. Damage to this fine network of capillaries makes it harder for the cells of the eye to do their job. If elevated blood pressure, or high blood sugar levels are left unmanaged, then the cells of the eye can undergo irreversible damage and vision can be permanently lost. What can I do to help keep my eyes healthy? Eating a healthy diet, exercising routinely, and visiting your primary care provider and eye care provider regularly will help you achieve lifelong eye health and clearest possible vision.

Vibrant USA
(See ad on outside back cover.)
The Complex World of Medicare: Are You Sure You Should Navigate It on Your Own? Even the savviest consumers seem to be confused by Medicare insurance. Social Security, Medigap, Medicare Advantage plans, Part D, enrollment periods, HMO, PPO…how are does one make sense of it all?! Medicare Insurance is far from simple, and will likely only get more complicated in the future. Consider working with an insurance agent who specializes in Medicare year-round to ensure you choose the right plan and your questions are answered. VibrantUSA is an independent agency specializing in Medicare, providing assistance at no cost to clients. Nearly 12,000 Whatcom County residents have trusted VibrantUSA for their Medicare insurance needs. But maybe you’re considering doing some research on your own, going directly to an insurance carrier, or working with an agency that sells all types of insurance. Are you informed of the following so you can make an educated decision? • Original Medicare consists of Parts A and B. Parts C and D are sold through private companies. Which parts are optional? Is there a penalty for delaying or denying enrollment? • Are you required to enroll in Medicare when you turn 65? Are you required to enroll in Medicare when you start taking Social Security benefits? • Medicare Advantage plans are considered Medicare Part C, bundling parts A, B, & D. Will an Advantage plan work better for you than Original Medicare with a Supplement and separate Part D plan? • Medicare supplement plans are lettered A – N. This is different than Medicare parts A, B, C, and D. How do supplements vary in coverage from one another? Does coverage vary between carriers? • All Part D plans have four stages: Deductible, Initial Coverage, Coverage Gap, and Catastrophic Coverage. How will these stages apply to you, given your current medications? • Medicare Advantage plans are available by county; Medicare supplements and prescription drug plans are sold by state. Which plans have options where you live? • Many healthcare providers do not accept Original Medicare, and most Medicare Advantage plans have networks. Do your providers accept Original Medicare? Which Medicare Advantage plans do they accept? • The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) to make plan changes is October 15 – December 7 each year. When is your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)? Will you have a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) when you retire or move? • If you qualify, Low-Income Subsidy (LIS) or Extra-Help is available to assist with prescription drug costs, and Medicaid will assist with premiums and copays as well. Do you qualify? How do you apply? Can you switch plans mid-year if you receive assistance? If your head is spinning or your eyes have glossed over, you may want to consider working with an independent Medicare agent! When looking for an agent, look for someone who is highly trained, experienced and licensed. Consider asking: • Are you independent? Unbiased? Do you represent most of the Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Prescription Drug plans available? Which carriers are you contracted with? • Do you focus on Medicare insurance full-time, or is it an add-on product line to your other business? • Are you available to assist with billing and customer service issues year-round? • Are you familiar with which plans my providers accept? If you choose to work with a Medicare insurance specialist, you should be listened to, advised, and taken care of throughout the seasons, year after year. The right agent can help you make sense of Medicare!
