PeaceHealth Medical Group I think I may have irritable bowel syndrome. How do I know for sure and what can I do to make my life more comfortable? Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can make life uncomfortable. It’s a chronic condition that can be managed and needn’t interfere with your daily activities. IBS is the disruption of the normal functioning of the large intestine. Symptoms include abdominal pain or discomfort, frequent diarrhea or constipation (or alternating episodes of both), bloating and mucus-filled stool. Though we’re not sure exactly sure what causes IBS, it is a fairly common disorder. Please see your primary care provider or a gastroenterologist

My family enjoys many outdoor activities. How can I protect my child, who is allergic to insect stings? By all means, continue to be active outdoors. Exercise is essential for physical and mental health! Since your child is allergic to stings, he or she should wear a medical alert necklace or bracelet. Your child’s primary care provider may recommend an Epi-pen in case your child is stung. If so, it is important to make sure it is not expired, always with your child when going outside, and that you and any childcare providers are trained to use it. There are also some ways to minimize the risk of stings. Most bees and wasps

to discuss your symptoms. Once you get a firm diagnosis of IBS, you can set about managing it for the long term. One way to manage IBS is to modify your diet. Certain foods may trigger digestive issues for people with IBS. These often include fatty foods, milk products, chocolate, caffeinated or carbonated drinks, and some fruits and vegetables. Another way to manage IBS is to learn ways of handling or reducing the stress in your life. Stress doesn’t cause IBS, but increased stress can aggravate it. Your primary care provider may also recommend certain medications for abdominal pain, gas, bloating, diarrhea or constipation.

tend to sting when provoked. Here are some tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics: • Look out for nests, which can be found in old tree stumps, around rotting wood and in holes in the ground. • Don’t allow your child to play outside alone when stinging insects are active. Dead insects can sting if touched. • Wear closed shoes—not sandals. • Avoid wearing bright colors and floral patterns. These attract insects. Wear white, green and tan. These colors are not as attractive to insects. • When eating outdoors, avoid foods that attract insects, like tuna, peanut butter & jelly sandwiches, watermelon and sweetened foods.

PeaceHealth Medical Group My primary care provider has prescribed warfarin to prevent blood clots from forming. As the weather gets warmer, I enjoy eating more salads than I do in the winter. Is this okay while I’m taking warfarin? Yes, you may eat salads, but gradually increase the number and size of salads you eat. It’s important to be consistent with what you eat while taking warfarin (Coumadin). Specifically watch your intake of foods rich in vitamin K, which aids with clotting. Aim to get a consistent amount of vitamin K in your diet over time. Beets, spinach and kale are examples of foods rich in vitamin K. Other sources of vitamin K include multivitamins,

My child wants to participate in high school football, but I’m concerned about injuries. What’s the best way for him to avoid getting hurt? Injuries are common in all sports, and families must weigh the risks of possible injury with benefits of playing any sport. While difficult to completely avoid, there are some things you can do to help your child prepare for the season and avoid injury: • Ensure your child is in good physical condition. It can be tough to return to an intensive sport without preparation and training prior to the start of the season. • Train properly. Avoid very heavy weightlifting. Instead focus on training with moderate weights, higher repeti-

calcium supplements and some herbal products. Getting too much vitamin K may negate the benefits of warfarin, which is intended to decrease natural clotting effects of vitamin K. A sudden change to a diet high in vitamin K may result in the thickening of your blood, thus increasing your chance of forming a harmful clot in the brain, lung or lower extremities. Please work with your primary care provider or pharmacist when you make dietary changes. It’s important to monitor and regulate the dosage of warfarin so it works effectively for you. So, yes, enjoy the benefits of eating leafy greens, but do maintain a consistent level of vitamin K and work closely with your provider.

tion, proper form and cross-training to help reduce overuse injuries. • Coaches should offer instruction on proper technique when tackling and absorbing contact. • It is very important for the equipment to fit well, especially the helmet and mouth guards. • Learn about and talk to your child about signs and symptoms of concussions. All athletes with suspected concussions should not return to play until free of concussion symptoms. Sometimes injuries can be due to bad luck, but proper preparation and wellfitting equipment are key to avoiding injuries when possible.

Visiting Angels My parents are at the point of needing help in their home. This is new and uncharted territory for us. How do you go about finding caregivers to work with people like my parents? We know that this is a difficult decision to make.  We approach this as if it were our home and our parents.  In our hiring process we first look for caregivers that have the compassion and skill to do the job. They must have the heart to care like family and the knowledge and ability to give the care. Secondly, caregivers must be dependable. Their dependability has a domino effect, they must show up and be on time! Life has enough challenges without you having to worry about help that doesn’t arrive on time. Finally, a caregiver must be trustworthy. Having someone new in your home can be scary.

That all sounds great. But how do you assure that this is true about your caregivers? At Visiting Angels we not only value these things, we actually test for them. We are the only ones in our area to use a nationally recognized Caregiver Assessment tool that measures for a caregiver’s ability to work well one-on-one, and measures their character for reliability and trustworthiness. And for your peace of mind, we assign a specific Case Manager to meet with you and your family, to get to know them, and the client’s needs. That same Case Manager introduces our caregivers to you on the first visit, as well as monitors the ongoing care.

Dorsch Family Dental Need a dental crown? Dorsch Family Dental gives you something to smile about. What is a dental crown and what purpose does it serve? A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap, used to completely cover a tooth. Dental crowns are most often used for protecting a tooth when its ongoing health is at risk. What is the procedure like? Traditionally a two-appointment procedure, Dorsch Family Dental uses CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) technology to complete the procedure in just one appointment. Dental offices that don’t offer this technology require patients to attend two appointments for the procedure; a temporary crown is placed at the first appointment and patients return to have it removed and a permanent crown inserted. Tell me more about this technology. CAD/CAM expedites the creation of permanent crowns by allowing Dorsch Family Dental to create them in the office. The digital chairside impressioning system matches the exact shape and size of a patient’s existing tooth. What are the benefits of CAD/CAM? CAD/CAM saves patients time while offering an overall more enjoyable experience. The technology also allows Dorsch Family Dental to preserve more of a patient’s healthy, natural tooth structure.

Rebound Physical, Occupational & Hand Therapy What’s new for Tennis Elbow? With tennis elbow, you get very small tears to the tendons, which then form scar tissue. Scar tissue restricts blood flow and causes pain. Therapists use stainless steel Graston tools to locate and massage problem areas. Graston tools and techniques are 90% effective for breaking up scar tissue to allow healing. Graston tools and techniques require specialized training and are available at ReBound PT, OT, and Hand Therapy. If you have been dealing with tennis elbow for a short or long time, this treatment may be the ticket for your recovery! I heard Rebound Physical Therapy is starting an aquatic program. What are the benefits of aquatic therapy vs. the more traditional land-based setting? Performing therapy in the water provides several added benefits for patients. First, the buoyancy of water decreases weightbearing, putting less stress on joints and bones. This environment allows for earlier mobility and consequently less atrophy of muscles. Second, the water produces a natural resistance to movement ideal for whole-body strengthening. Finally, most patients report a decrease in pain when comparing to landbased exercise, making for a quicker progression and recovery.

Mt. Baker Vision Clinic The doctors, technicians and staff of Mt. Baker Vision Clinic are proud to offer cutting medical technology and services to help ensure our patients maintain clear and comfortable vision. Thank you for letting us serve you! In the field of eye care, digital retinal photography and optical coherence tomography are essential tools that allow for the non-invasive analysis of retinal tissue for early diagnosis and management of retinal disease and glaucoma. These technologies allow for clinical observation, measurement, and identification of structures that otherwise are not easily visible. They allow the doctor to analyze, measure and monitor for disease progression by comparing the findings with other examination results. As a result, we are able to detect, differentiate between and manage more effectively glaucoma and retinal health concerns without using more invasive tests that may lead to complications. The lefthand images below are of a patient with moderate to severe diabetic retinopathy. The image on the right was taken one year after the image on the left. Close inspection reveals a worsening of retinal hemorrhaging due to the patient’s uncontrolled diabetes. Consequently, we also changed our treatment to prevent further progression of diabetic retinal disease. Ocular coherence tomography (OCT) allows us to look below the surface of the retina. The patient in the righthand image experienced a complication following ocular surgery for his left eye resulting in retina swelling. Using OCT images, we customized his treatment and helped him achieve full recovery.

Men’s Health Month in June: A Time To Take Action

Good Health for Men Often Depends on Wellness Awareness and Early Screenings (BPT) - The statistics for men’s health are alarming. For men, life expectancy is 76.3 years; for women, it’s 81.2 years. The Kaiser Family Foundation points out that nearly 71 percent of men are at risk of being overweight or obese, compared to 59 percent for women. Far more women than men are likely to go to a physician office visit, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Nutrition Another important priority is nutrition. Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables every day, and limit foods and drinks high in sugar, salt, saturated fat and alcohol. Other important reminders for men:

Northwest Laboratory What exactly do you do?

Why is laboratory testing important?

Northwest Laboratory is a new state-of-the-art medical testing laboratory in Bellingham. We have dedicated and highly skilled local Medical Technologists who perform the testing, and experienced Lab Assistants who perform blood draws. These tests provide the essential information that physicians require to ensure the best care for their patients. Additionally, our Lab Medical Director and pathologist team are available for provider consultation.

It is estimated that 70% of medical decisions rely on the results of laboratory testing. Sophisticated instruments measure blood counts, proteins, antibodies, electrolytes, drug levels, hormones and test for a large variety of infectious agents. Doctors rely on rapid and accurate results to narrow their diagnostic evaluations and to determine the best course of treatment. Laboratory tests are also used to monitor progress after instituting therapy.

What can people/patients do to make a blood draw easier or more comfortable?

Where do your patients go for testing?

We want patients to be as comfortable as possible during the blood collection. Let our team know if there is a fear, or if the patient has ever fainted during a blood draw. Our main location has a treatment room available that can serve as a quiet place for pediatric draws and for more sensitive patients. Drink plenty of water—hydrating helps plump up veins.

Our main draw station and laboratory is located at 3548 Meridian St. Suite 101. To accommodate customer/client schedules, we are open Monday through Friday from 6am to 7pm and Saturday from 8am to 1pm. We also have a draw site conveniently located just off I-5 in Fairhaven, at 3115 Old Fairhaven Parkway. We are open Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm at the Fairhaven location. NW Laboratory is open to the public on a first come, first serve basis. No appointments are needed. Come see us!

You now have a local lab option.

You have a choice. Ask your doctor to use Northwest Laboratory for your lab testing services. In 2017, Whatcom County lost our local medical laboratory. With their departure so went the local service, support and rapid response testing capabilities. The physicians at Northwest Pathology have responded to local healthcare providers desiring a local testing option by opening Bellingham’s new premier lab testing facility. Build a local healthcare team you trust to care for you and your family. Ask your doctor to keep your testing services local, with Northwest Laboratory and Northwest Pathology.
