PeaceHealth Medical Group I’m in my late 50s and I’m starting to see quite a few of my friends and acquaintances suddenly dealing with a cancer diagnosis. It’s very unsettling. What are some of the most effective ways to prevent cancer? There’s no surefire way to prevent cancer, of course—we all know people who seem to have done everything “right” but still get cancer. However, there’s a LOT you can do to improve your odds: • Be physically active! Walk more, sit less. Aim for 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day. • Maintain a healthy weight. • Limit consumption of red and processed meat. Get most of your protein from whole grains, legumes, poultry, fish, dairy and eggs. • Limit sugar-sweetened drinks and

I could hardly wait to get back outside working in my yard this year, but I’ve noticed I’m getting congestion, sneezing and itchy, watery, puffy eyes every time I’m out there. Besides loading up on allergy medicine, is there anything I can do? Fortunately there are quite few things you can do to prevent serious reactions. Surgical masks are easily available and more effective at filtering particles than most cloth masks. The mask’s surface will collect tiny pollen particles, so be sure to remove the mask gently by the ear loops, throw it away and wash your hands. If possible, you should also change your clothes and wash your hair right away when you come inside to remove residual pollen. Rinsing the 2

fast food. Focus on real food. • Protect yourself from the sun. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a SPF of at least 30, even on cloudy days, and reapply every two hours. • Don’t use tobacco! It’s a huge cancer risk. • Get regular medical care. Self-exams and screenings for various types of cancers can increase your chances of discovering cancer early, when treatment is most likely to be successful. •If you have a strong family history of cancer, talk to your doctor about the role your genetics may have on cancer screenings and potential genetic testing. • Ensure you are up-to-date with recommended vaccinations as some vaccine-preventable viruses are associated with increased cancer risks.

nasal passages with saline is often helpful after working outdoors. Other steps you can take include bathing your cat or dog more often, keeping windows and doors closed, setting up a portable air purifier in your home and monitoring pollen counts so you can limit or avoid being outside when counts are at their peak. If these steps aren’t providing enough relief, consider talking with your primary care provider about medical therapy, such as antihistamines, corticosteroid nasal spray and eye drops. Immunotherapy such as allergy shots or sub-lingual immunotherapy are options provided by allergy specialists if medical therapy does not provide optimal relief.

PeaceHealth Medical Group I’ve been getting steroid shots in my arthritic left ankle for the last couple years, but the pain is getting worse. I’m in my 70s and I’m wondering about surgery. What options are there and what can I expect? If it’s affecting your mobility and causing you pain, it’s probably time to reassess. I’d recommend you see a specialist for a thorough assessment. If surgery is necessary, options include what we call fusion surgery—where the ankle joint is operated on to help it fuse together—or total ankle replacement with an artificial joint. For many older patients, joint replacement is often the best choice. Total knee and hip replacements have been around for a long time, but total ankles are a newer technology that’s getting better and better. In this procedure, precise

I live in Everson so I was really excited when I heard last summer that PeaceHealth was opening a new clinic in Lynden. What is the status of construction, and what services will be offered there? We are excited too! Although we held a groundbreaking in August of 2021, construction was delayed and we’re now anticipating opening in Summer 2023. We’ve long identified the need to enhance healthcare services to the communities in North and East Whatcom County, and in 2021 we purchased a five-acre parcel at the intersection of East Badger and Benson roads. The 24,000-square-foot medical clinic will offer both traditional

incisions are made in the ankle using specialized instruments. The old joint is removed and replaced with an implant sized specifically to the patient. It’s kind of like a sandwich—each slice of ‘bread’ is a highly polished metal component and each of those is on the top and bottom of the ankle joint. In between, we have polyethylene that is kind of like the cartilage of the artificial ankle, allowing motion and gliding. Full ankle replacement may require you to stay off the new joint for about two weeks, then walking in a boot after that. This is far better than the previous ankle fusion procedure for arthritis, which typically put patients off their foot for up to three months. Recovery time varies, of course, but the goal with this or any orthopedic treatment is to get you back on your feet as soon as possible, doing the activities you love.

and walk-in primary care services, including pediatric care. We also plan to relocate our existing Lynden-based orthopedic clinic to the new site when it opens. Additional specialty services such as cardiology, physical therapy, and OB-GYN will be available in this location as well. We also plan to house imaging services, offered by Mount Baker Imaging, and laboratory services, provided by Quest. We couldn’t be more pleased with the interest and collaboration of the City of Lynden in helping us develop a strong presence to meet the healthcare needs of Lynden, Sumas, Everson and Nooksack area residents now and into the future.

Mt. Baker Imaging 3D mammography is a FDA-approved imaging technology designed for early breast cancer detection and is done along with a 2D mammogram. During the 3D part of the exam, the X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over your breast, taking multiple breast images. A computer then produces a 3D image of your breast tissue in one millimeter sections, providing greater visibility for the radiologist to see the inside of the breast in improved detail. The additional 3D images make it possible for our radiologists to better visualize your breast tissue and to detect potential abnormalities, greatly reducing the need for follow up imaging. What are the advantages? • Earlier detection of small cancers that may be hidden in a routine mammogram. • Better at determining size, shape, and location of abnormalities. • Less biopsies and additional exams. • Better able to detect cancer in multiple parts of the breast. • Improved separation of dense tissues. Who can have a 3D mammogram? The exam is approved for all women who would be undergoing a standard mammogram in both the screening and diagnostic setting. Mt. Baker Imaging offers 3D technology for all screening mammograms. What should I expect during a 3D mammogram? Your 3D mammogram experience should be very similar to previous mammograms at our office. A 3D mammogram complements standard 2D mammography and is performed at the same time. No additional compression is required, and it only takes about four seconds! Our helpful technologists will guide you through the process every step of the way. Is 3D mammography covered by insurance? How much does it cost? 3D mammography is covered by insurance companies. Patients are encouraged to call their insurance carrier with exam code 77063 for exact benefits.

Mt. Baker Imaging offers 3D MAMMOGRAPHY, a breakthrough in the early detection of Breast Cancer. Benefits of 3D MAMMOGRAPHY:   

Detects up to 40% more invasive breast cancers Reduces false positives or the need for additional images by 40% Superior to conventional 2D mammography alone in early breast cancer detection Our Hologic Genius 3DTM system is the first FDA approved 3D system for breast cancer screening and diagnosis.

Our imaging center is located at 1610 Grover Street, Suite C-4, Lynden. Call to schedule your appointment today!

Rebound Physical, Occupational & Hand Therapy What’s new for Tennis Elbow? With tennis elbow, you get very small tears to the tendons, which then form scar tissue. Scar tissue restricts blood flow and causes pain. Therapists use stainless steel Graston tools to locate and massage problem areas. Graston tools and techniques are 90% effective for breaking up scar tissue to allow healing. Graston tools and techniques require specialized training and are available at ReBound PT, OT, and Hand Therapy. If you have been dealing with tennis elbow for a short or long time, this treatment may be the ticket for your recovery! I heard Rebound Physical Therapy is starting an aquatic program. What are the benefits of aquatic therapy vs. the more traditional land-based setting? Performing therapy in the water provides several added benefits for patients. First, the buoyancy of water decreases weightbearing, putting less stress on joints and bones. This environment allows for earlier mobility and consequently less atrophy of muscles. Second, the water produces a natural resistance to movement ideal for whole-body strengthening. Finally, most patients report a decrease in pain when comparing to landbased exercise, making for a quicker progression and recovery.

7 Elements Physical Therapy Has your doctor recommended surgery to help you regain mobility and reduce pain? You want to feel better but you aren’t sure whether surgery is the right route. It’s expensive and recovery can be difficult. You’d like to try another option, so you get a referral from your doctor for physical therapy. You head to the physical therapy clinic and quickly realize you’re going to see a different practitioner each visit. You have to spend valuable treatment time re-telling your story again and again. Then your physical therapist takes you to the exercise area and leaves you to work out on your own. You go home feeling discouraged by your lack of results despite all the effort you’ve put into feeling better. You know physical therapy can be different. If you saw the same physical therapist every visit, they would remember your story and treatment plan. They would monitor your progress over time. And they would focus on you, not put you on an exercise machine and move on to the next patient. High-quality, hands-on physical therapy could be just what you need to get back to an active, well-balanced life. At 7 Elements Physical Therapy, high-quality care is what you get. You get 100% one-on-one time with your physical therapist - the same one each session. You get a thorough evaluation and a treatment plan that is easy to understand. Most importantly, you and your physical therapist become a team. You can come to your appointment confident: confident that your story is heard; confident that your physical therapist is trained in hands-on, evidence-based treatments; and confident that you will get back to the activities you love. You don’t even need to commit to a full treatment plan right away. Instead, you can come in for a FREE 30-minute Total Body Diagnostic to get to know us and learn how you can get better faster for less. Lynden Human Life

Why is regular dental care for kids important?

Lynden Human Life has a mission statement to “restore the rights of the unborn”. We promote and protect the most vulnerable of all citizens; the unborn.

Children’s Dental Patients Now!

According to the Washington State Department of Health more than half of all third graders and almost 38% of kindergartners have active tooth decay. Untreated tooth decay can lead to toothaches, difficulty speaking, chewing, swallowing, sleep problems, and higher rates of chronic disease as adults. Identifying problems early is critical to help kids grow up healthy.

If you need pregnancy support and are facing a crisis pregnancy please reach out to us at 1-888-399-life. For women needing housing and resources you can contact New Way Ministries at 360-354-9930. #everyhumanlifecounts

What can you do to improve your child’s oral health? • Take your child to the dentist for a fluoride varnish and sealants. A fluoride varnish is a concentrated form of fluoride that is painted on teeth, and can also lower tooth decay by about one-third. Sealants are protective coatings that can prevent 80 percent of cavities. • Call Unity Care NW at (360) 676-6177 to schedule a dental examination with one of our Dental Providers.

Aspire Wellness Health is our first and best defense! In the past year, through the world’s COVID-19 experience, we all have realized and been reminded that HEALTH is our first and best defense. Here at Aspire Wellness I believe that one of the first and best places to begin our pursuit of health is by how we feed and fuel our bodies. Food is our best medicine and weight management is healthcare. We are grateful daily by the positive outcomes we have the privilege to witness when our clients simply change what they eat. Some of these outcomes have been reduced inflammation, reduced or eliminated need for prescriptions, improved sleep and energy, improved memory and focus, improved mobility and increased activity, improved self-esteem and best of all, reduced risk of many diseases and illnesses. This is achieved by reducing their BMI, reducing their risk for metabolic syndrome by improving their insulin resistance. What is metabolic syndrome? According to Mayo Clinic, metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that occur together, increasing your risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. These conditions include increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels. NHLBI also notes that conditions such as fatty liver disease, PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), gallstones, and breathing issues (such as sleep apnea) play a role with metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome, or insulin resistance, can contribute to severe high blood sugar, severe low blood sugar, heart attacks, stroke, kidney disease, eye problems, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and discussed in the media today, poor outcomes from COVID-19. The good news… is we have an opportunity every day, every meal, to improve our health, until we don’t. When we address our health with food as our medicine, our results may be curative through improved health. When we address our health (often caused by a poor diet) with medicine, our results may be management of poor health. When you learn to live at a healthy weight and BMI, you often not only reduce risks but eliminate the onset of health concerns. Here at Aspire Wellness, we have the privilege every day to encourage our clients to pursue their best health. We have a meal plan that works for both weight loss and long-term weight stabilization. We have an amazing team of experienced compassionate coaches. Our clients have said: “It’s holistic and empowering. The staff at Aspire understands how food and what we eat slides its way into every aspect of our lives. With this awareness, the coaching and structure of the diet enables people to be more successful for their results” -Amy B. “If I can follow it, anyone can! It has given me a new lease on life. This has changed my whole life!” -Carol W. “I would recommend Aspire Wellness because education is key. Not only do I want to be held accountable, I want the information so I can make the healthy choices in the years to come.” -Diana Y. “To put it simply, it’s changed my life. I know size isn’t everything, but feeling good in your own skin is.” Brandie B. At Aspire Wellness you will find a non-invasive approach to wellness. We have three locations in Anacortes, Burlington and Lynden, WA and offer virtual coaching, as well. We also offer Red-Light and Celluma Light therapies. Our stores offer several popular product lines to our communities; Walden Farms, Garlic Box, Bucky sleep products, Plant Therapy, OSEA skincare, COOLA sunscreen, Skinny Syrups, Hum supplements and more. Stop in anytime! Pursue good health, pursue feeding your body healthy food as its medicine, and aspire to wellness!

Visiting Angels My parents are at the point of needing help in their home. This is new and uncharted territory for us. How do you go about finding caregivers to work with people like my parents? We know that this is a difficult decision to make. We approach this as if it were our home and our parents. In our hiring process we first look for caregivers that have the compassion and skill to do the job. They must have the heart to care like family and the knowledge and ability to give the care. Secondly, caregivers must be dependable. Their dependability has a domino effect, they must show up and be on time! Life has enough challenges without you having to worry about help that doesn’t arrive on time. Finally, a caregiver must be trustworthy. Having someone new in your home can be scary.

That all sounds great. But how do you assure that this is true about your caregivers? At Visiting Angels we not only value these things, we actually test for them. We are the only ones in our area to use a nationally recognized Caregiver Assessment tool that measures for a caregiver’s ability to work well one-on-one, and measures their character for reliability and trustworthiness. And for your peace of mind, we assign a specific Case Manager to meet with you and your family, to get to know them, and the client’s needs. That same Case Manager introduces our caregivers to you on the first visit, as well as monitors the ongoing care.
