Lynden Family Physical Therapy My sister has been diagnosed by her physician with fibromyalgia. She complains of pain and aching throughout her muscles. She also has difficulty sleeping. What is fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a complex disorder that is characterized by widespread muscular aching and burning through the body. Some patients relate that they feel as if they have the flu all the time. This syndrome is also associated with other disorders, which include chronic fatigue, sleep disorder, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic headache, temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ), and sensitivity to the environment, such as odors, noise, and bright lights, among other symptoms. Fibromyalgia typically occurs among women of middle age, but it also occurs in men and in other age groups. There are many theories as to the cause of fibromyalgia, but no definitive answer as of yet.

However, fibromyalgia is a self-limiting condition, meaning that it is not a terminal illness but a cluster of symptoms that require daily management to allow the individual to function as normally as possible. Some of the current treatments include physical therapy, improving deep-level sleep that is so crucial for body functions, trial of different medication schemes, stress management techniques, relaxation techniques, therapeutic massage, and a consistent exercise program. It is possible to manage fibromyalgia symptoms with a comprehensive treatment plan so the patient can return to normal daily activities.

My physician has ordered a MRI for what he believes is a rotator cuff injury. What is the rotator cuff?

The rotator cuff refers to the network of 4 muscles that originate on the shoulder blade (scapula) and attach to the upper arm bone (humerus). The tendons of the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis muscles form a “cuff” at the shoulder joint that provides stability and allows for arm movement.

Injuries to any of these muscles can cause pain, and limit arm movement.

How long will I have to go to physical therapy to recover from injury?

For most injuries, the goal of PT is to first help control pain and inflammation, then to develop a progressive program to regain range of motion and strength. There are several variables that affect rehab, including the extent of your injury and if surgery was necessary, your general health and activity level, and ultimately your participation in a home exercise program as directed by your physical therapist. Your PT will discuss the guidelines for your participation situation with you.

I am tired of suffering from allergies during the best time of year to enjoy outdoor activities. What can I do to improve my quality of life?

Antihistamines are an important part of successful control of seasonal allergies but they do not reduce inflammation in the nasal mucous membrane, which may be worse for you this year. PeaceHealth St. Joseph Cancer Center Construction on the new PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center Cancer Center is scheduled to be complete in December. This new facility will bring the excellent cancer care services, currently provided at different PeaceHealth locations, under one roof for the first time.

Why is it so important to combine cancer services into a single location?

An integrated Cancer Center is about providing the best possible experience and healthcare for those who are dealing with a cancer diagnosis, treatment for their cancer, and life beyond their illness. In an integrated center, all services are provided collaboratively and in the same location.

What are the treatments for Tennis Elbow?

It is also known as lateral epicondylitis caused by repetitive microtrauma to the extensor tendons. It can be seen in non-tennis players who engage in repetitive activities such as hand grasping and scooping ice cream. Initial treatment may include antiinflammatory drugs, exercises and corticosteroid injections.

Platelet-Rich Plasma injection to the elbow is another new treatment for those with chronic pain and limited functions.

What is Spinal Stenosis?

Spinal Stenosis is the result of narrowing of the spinal canal, caused by herniated disc, facet joint arthritis, and spine degeneration.

The patient will complain of leg pain with walking or standing.

The pain will disappear if the patient flexes the lumbar spine or assumes the sitting position. MRI is highly accurate to evaluate this condition. It can be successfully managed non-surgically with a multimodality approach.

Essential Health Tips

1. Move More Make it a daily challenge to find ways to move your body.

Climb stairs if given a choice between that and escalators or elevators. Walk your dog; chase your kids; toss balls with friends, mow the lawn. Anything that moves your limbs is not only a fitness tool, it’s a stress buster. Think ‘move’ in small increments of time. It doesn’t have to be an hour in the gym or a 45-minute aerobic dance class or tai chi or kickboxing. But that’s great when you’re up to it. Meanwhile, move more. Thought for the day: Cha, Cha, Cha…. Then do it!

2. Cut Fat Avoid the obvious such as fried foods, burgers and other fatty meats (i.e. pork, bacon, ham, salami, ribs and sausage). Dairy products such as cheese, cottage cheese, milk and cream should be eaten in low fat versions. Nuts and sandwich meats, mayonnaise, margarine, butter and sauces should be eaten in limited amounts.

Most are available in lower fat versions such as substitute butter, fat free cheeses and mayonnaise. Thought for the day: Lean, mean, fat-burning machine…. Then be one!

3. Quit Smoking The jury is definitely in on this verdict. Ever since 1960 when the Surgeon General announced that smoking was harmful to your health, Americans have been reducing their use of tobacco products that kill. Just recently, we’ve seen a surge in smoking in adolescents and teens. Could it be the Hollywood influence? It seems the stars in every movie of late smoke cigarettes. Warn your children of the false romance or ‘tough guy’ stance of Hollywood smokers.

4. Floss Your Teeth Recent studies make a direct connection between longevity and teeth flossing. Nobody knows exactly why. Perhaps it’s because people who floss tend to be more health conscious than people who don’t? Thought for the day: Floss and be your body’s boss.

5. Reduce Stress Easier said than done, stress busters come in many forms. Some techniques recommended by experts are to think positive thoughts.

Spend 30 minutes a day doing something you like. (i.e., soak in a hot tub; walk on the beach or in a park; read a good book; visit a friend; play with your dog; listen to soothing music; watch a funny movie. Get a massage, a facial or a haircut. Meditate. Count to ten before losing your temper or getting aggravated. Avoid difficult people when possible. Thought for the day: When seeing red, think pink clouds….then float on them.

6. Protect Yourself from Pollution If you can’t live in a smog-free environment, at least avoid smoke-filled rooms, high traffic areas, breathing in highway fumes and exercising near busy thoroughfares. Exercise outside when the smog rating is low. Exercise indoors in air conditioning when air quality is good. Plant lots of shrubbery in your yard. It’s a good pollution and dirt from the street deterrent. Thought for the day: ‘Smoke gets in your eyes’…and your mouth, and your nose and your lungs as do pollutants….hum the tune daily.

9. Keep a Positive Mental Outlook There’s a definitive connection between living well and healthfully and having a cheerful outlook on life. Thought for the day: You can’t be unhappy when you’re smiling or singing.

7. Wear Your Seat Belt Statistics show that seat belts add to longevity and help alleviate potential injuries in car crashes. Thought for the day: Buckle down and buckle up.

8. Avoid Excessive Drinking While recent studies show a glass of wine or one drink a day (two for men) can help protect against heart disease, more than that can cause other health problems such as liver and kidney disease and cancer. Thought for the day: A jug of wine should last a long time.

10. Choose Your Parents Well The link between genetics and health is a powerful one. But just because one or both of your parents died young in ill health doesn’t mean you cannot counteract the genetic pool handed you. Thought for the day: Follow these basic tips for healthy living and you can better control your own destiny.

SUMMER HEALTH:

Stop Frequent Heartburn (ARA) - Summer is here, which means it’s time to pack your bags for vacation, dust off your beach umbrella and fire up the grill. Unfortunately many people will not only feel the summer heat outside with friends, but also inside their chest. Summer is prime time for heartburn.

Barbecue season is the time of the year when people experience frequent heartburn symptoms the most, according to a recent survey by Wakefield Research for P&G, which brings you Prilosec OTC(R). The survey revealed that many frequent heartburn sufferers - those who experience heartburn two or more days per week - are not treating symptoms as effectively as possible, and there is a general lack of understanding about heartburn and available treatments.

One of the top misconceptions is that all over-thecounter (OTC) heartburn treatments are the same.

Although frequent heartburn symptoms can be reduced with antacids or H2 blockers, proton pump inhibitors are indicated specifically for frequent heartburn.

There are important differences among the available therapies: • Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) treat frequent heartburn by shutting down many of the acid pumps in the stomach and stopping symptoms before they start.

Effects can last 24 hours.

• Histamine2 (H2) blockers partially block production of acid in the stomach. The effect of H2 blockers generally lasts six to 12 hours.

• Antacids neutralize existing stomach acid and provide relatively rapid but short-term relief of heartburn symptoms lasting one to three hours.

Two myths many believe are that drinking milk can help relieve symptoms and that weight gain has no impact on frequent heartburn. In actuality, a glass of milk increases one’s acid production (like any food) and maintaining a healthy weight is one key to treating heartburn.

“One way to treat frequent heartburn is to take a medication that can help block the acid that causes heartburn, so you don’t get it in the first place,” Dr. Sachar observed. “It’s possible that, while taking just one pill a day as directed, a 14-day course of Prilosec OTC can control, and in many cases, eliminate frequent heartburn symptoms. Prilosec OTC may take one to four days for full effect and should not be taken for more than 14 days or more often than every four months unless directed by a doctor. It is not intended for immediate relief.”

People can take measures to avoid heartburn symptoms this summer. Dr. Sachar offers the following tips for those suffering from frequent heartburn: • Get educated. One of the best defenses is to arm yourself with information. With all the over-thecounter medications available, my patients are often overwhelmed and don’t know what is right for them.

Additionally, people often fall prey to the common myth that experiencing symptoms daily is normal, without realizing there are treatments available. The more you know about frequent heartburn, the better you will be able to treat it.

• Talk to your doctor about the right treatment for you.

Dr. Sachar recommends over-the-counter PPIs, like Prilosec OTC because it’s possible with just one pill a day to block the acid and stop heartburn before it starts for a full 24 hours of zero heartburn. It’s possible while taking Prilosec OTC. Use as directed for 14 days to treat frequent heartburn. Do not take for more than 14 days or more often than every four months unless directed by a doctor. Not for immediate relief.

• Quit smoking. Smoking relaxes the valve at the top of your stomach, allowing excess stomach acid to reflux into your esophagus.

Vision Plus Cataracts 101 You’ve heard the word cataracts, and you know it has something to do with vision. Here’s a quick primer on the effects, risk factors and symptoms of cataracts.

The word cataract means waterfall, and refers to a clouding that develops in the lens of the eye, obstructing the movement of light into the eye. Typically both eyes are affected – one usually before the other.

Cataracts are usually related to aging and are very common in individuals age 60 and older.

But other types of cataract do exist, including • Secondary: cataracts forming after surgery for other eye diseases, such as glaucoma, or in individuals who have diabetes • Traumatic: cataracts developing after an eye injury – even years later.

• Radiation: cataracts that develop after exposure to some types of radiation

The progress of cataracts is slow but steady, resulting in loss of vision that is painless but can cause blindness if untreated. Contours, shadows and color vision become less vivid and glare sensitivity is increased. Diseases such as diabetes and personal behavior like smoking and alcohol consumption can increase the likelihood of developing cataracts. Other factors include exposure to sunlight, particularly ultraviolet B rays, a deficit of some vitamins and antioxidants and taking certain medications.

Cataracts can be quickly and easily removed with an hour-long surgery (one hour per eye) under local anesthetic. In the course of the surgery, your old, blurry lens is replaced with a new, clear, plastic lens. This process dramatically improves vision in over 90% of people.

Hearing Northwest What is a hearing evaluation and when/why should I get one?

Hearing tests are designed to identify all degrees of hearing loss. After gathering a health history, the hearing specialist will conduct an ear exam with an otoscope to check for obstructions, infections or other medical conditions that might affect hearing. If there is no medical reason for hearing loss, the hearing specialist will perform a series of tests, including an audiogram, to determine if a hearing problem is present.

If you find yourself misunderstanding speech in conversations, having difficulty hearing in noisy social settings, or unable to hear on the phone, you may want to consider getting a hearing exam. Additionally, if you have a history of noise exposure (listening to loud music, working in a noisy setting, hunting, shooting, etc) you may have damaged your hearing.

Yes. Depending on the level of amputation, most are able to resume their normal daily activities including driving. Some activities may require personal and equipment adaptations to perform them. Normal progression of walking is to use a walker, then transition to a cane, and finally without an assistive device. This varies with each patient.

What types of shoes can I wear with my ankle foot (AFO) brace?
