Welcome to the 2022 Northwest Washington Fair

I am thrilled to welcome you to the Northwest Washington Fair.

is year’s fair theme, ‘It’s On,’ captures our excitement to bring the community together this summer and make memories.

I personally have a lifetime of memories that were made at the fair, starting when I was an exhibitor with my 4H livestock project.

It is my privilege to be able to work with the fair sta to create 10 days of activities that focus on our core values as an organization: education, agriculture, youth, competition and entertainment.

You will be the rst visitors to step foot inside the newly completed Farming for Life Experience, inside the Farm Pavilion. is exhibit tells the story of local agriculture in such a beautiful way, one that will educate generations to come about the importance of agriculture, where food comes from and what careers you can pursue in agriculture. I am thankful for a community that continues to support this project.

When you enter the Fairgrounds, it is my hope that you are entertained. Whether it is a wide variety of entertainment on

the Bank of the Paci c Grandstand stage or some of our new grounds entertainment. Stop by Paul Bunyan’s Lumberjack Show for some old-fashioned family fun, take a moment to meet the Legendary Longhorns and be amazed by the Nerveless Nocks Daredevil Show.

As you walk through the Fairgrounds you will be greeted by our year-round and seasonal sta as well as volunteers, all who play important roles in making the ten days of the fair happen. Feel free to ask them questions, they are the ultimate fair fans and ambassadors.

I hope you take some time to visit the much-loved traditional parts of the fair, as well as experience something new. ank you for visiting the fair.

Country music star to perform at Northwest Washington Fair

Adding to the Northwest Washington Fair’s all-star lineup for 2022 is the groundbreaking country music star Granger Smith featuring Earl Dibbles Jr.

Granger Smith will perform live on Saturday, Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. as part of the Bank of the Paci c Grandstand Entertainment Series at this year’s fair in Lynden.

Smith has a massive and rabid fan base known as Yee Yee Nation and plays to soldout stadiums all over the country.

e power of music has al-

ways been in his hands, even when Smith didn’t know it. When people need hope, his songs inspires it. When people are in a tough spot, Smith shows them a way out. When people are looking for purpose, he is proof that sometimes purpose nds you.

at’s what country music has done for Smith. And that’s the true measure of a bona de artist: when you can share a little bit of yourself with every story you tell and every picture you paint.

After the kind of year Smith had -- we all had -- he decided to let his music do the healing. Not just for himself, but for anyone who needs to hear songs that let them know they’re not alone on whatever road they’re taking.

And it’s been a long time coming.

is new batch of music from the born-and-bred Texan initially started back in early 2019. Smith was writing and creating and prepping for his 10th studio album when all of those plans abruptly came to a halt.

“ e vision for this music collection was just starting to come together. I had about six songs ready to record, and had booked a Nashville studio for June 5, 2019. And then we lost Riv the night of June 4,” Smith recalls of the tragic night he and his wife Amber lost their 3-year-old son River in a drowning accident at their Texas home. “Everything stopped. e album wasn’t just on hold. It didn’t even cross my mind.”

But after several months of mourning, he was visiting his parents, sitting on their front porch just outside of Waco, and listening to the song he’d written earlier that year with Chris DeStefano, Bradley Rempel and Jon Nite. “ at’s Why I Love Dirt Roads” was one of the songs he’d been planning to record on June 5.

“It started hitting me in a di erent way. It had taken on new meaning,” he says. So he sat down to rework the song’s

bridge to re ect that sometimes dirt roads are beat up and broken, scattered and tossed in the breeze.

But no matter their scars, it doesn’t change what they are. at sounds a little like me. His team warned him against any kind of re-entry into

the music world. But Smith was insistent that if the song helped him cope, it could do the same for others.

“ at was what I wanted people to hear me say. So when we started playing shows again, I was using that song to recalibrate my life,”

he says. “You can relate life to a dirt road in a lot of ways: sometimes it’s beat up, broken, scattered and washed out, and you don’t always know what’s around the next curve, but you take that road

Continued from 13 anyway. at’s what makes it beautiful.” at one song was enough to get Smith ready to make music again.

And just as he was taking stock of the songs he’d prepped for that June session after one last stop on his tour, he came back home. And so did COVID-19.

At rst, the quarantine’s arrival seemed like a blessing for Smith. He sat down with the unexpected downtime and penned “Heroes” and “I Kill Spiders.” at’s when, Smith says, the album started taking a turn.

“I’ve never been the artist who creates a theme before we start. I’m the guy where the theme starts happening halfway through the process. When you start narrowing down the list, you see that you’re creating a story with the songs. So if you listen all the way down, you’re not gonna get stuck in one emotion,” he says. “It’s gonna take you different places.”

Two of the songs Smith ultimately recorded were brand new to him. ey’re songs about fatherhood. In his previous nine albums, he’d never addressed his own family in his music. “ ere was never an entire song about my fatherson or father-daughter relationships,” he says of “I Kill Spiders” and another soon to be announced song.

Smith, his wife, their son Lincoln and their daughter London have started revealing more of themselves in their YouTube series e Smiths.

Songwise, exposing your family is something Smith says only happens in country. “It’s what separates country from rock and pop. We all overlap on love songs, loss songs, mad songs and

happy songs. But where we don’t intersect with those other genres is family.”

Keeping the stories and the lyrics genuine meant the music would have to follow that lead. “So there are no synth loops here. All the instruments are played by human hands,” he says.

And the title track is notable for one simple reason: simplicity.

“After Riv, I really wanted to simplify a lot of things. We moved twice: rst to get to a landing spot, and then second to a piece of land where we’re building a new house. So until then, we’re literally living in an RV parked in the barn on the property. ‘Country ings’ speaks to that simplicity of boiling everything down to the basics of what we need not what we want. We are so much closer now: to the elements, to nature, and to each other.”

at’s how the banjo-heavy track led the way for this next chapter in Smith’s career.

Smith made the decision to release his new songs in two parts because of the current state of the world.

It’s impossible to imagine that someone could digest 16 songs in one sitting, and truly feel the complete ride he’s trying to give them.

e 16 songs, once you do hear them in their entirety, have Smith all over the map. But it is, and always will be, a country map. And rest assured, Earl Dibbles Jr. is along for the ride on three songs.

Earl brings Smith something of a creative release, and he compares Earl’s songs to the dessert you crave after a good meal.

“ ose songs seem to happen amidst the writing of all the other songs, but are

Fair

always just on the back burner. ey never take up real estate in my mind.

ey never overshadow the other music,” Smith says of leaving room for a little Earl. “I don’t want people to take my albums too seriously. I love that there can be a light-hearted stroke. It took time for me to realize that I could write an impactful, heartfelt, moving song that gives you goosebumps. But what equally a ects people is a genuine smile from an Earl song.”

Another part of Smith’s life that forever tethers him to his fans is the Yee Yee brand he started with his brothers Tyler and Parker.

It is not merely Smith merchandise. It has a life of its own. “It is no longer a reection of the music,” Smith says, “now the music is kind of the soundtrack to those Yee Yee people. And that’s a huge blessing.”

With the new music, the YouTube series, the Yee Yee brand, and the dependability of Earl Dibbles Jr., Smith says it all works together to reveal the truth.

“We are normal, very vulnerable humans. Now when I meet people, they feel like they really know me. ey genuinely feel closer to me and more comfortable around me,” he says. And that is the proof that there’s a little bit of Granger Smith in everything Granger Smith does.

If the rider touches the animal, themselves or any of their equipment with their free hand, they are disqualied.

In saddle bronc and bareback riding, a contestant must mark out their horse; that is, they must exit the chute with their spurs set above the horse’s shoulders and hold them there until the horse’s front feet hit the ground after the initial jump out of the chute.

Failing to do so results in disquali cation.

Timed events

In timed events: steer wrestling, team roping, tie-down roping, and barrel racing; cowboys and cowgirls at the other end of the arena compete against the clock, as well as against each other.

A contestant’s goal is to post the fastest time in his or her event. In steer wrestling and the roping events, calves and steers are allowed a head start.

e competitor, on horseback, starts in a three-sided fenced area called a box.

e fourth side opens into the arena.

A rope barrier is stretched across that opening and is tied to the calf or steer with a

Once the calf or steer reaches the head-start pointpredetermined by the size of the arena - the barrier is automatically released.

If a cowboy or a cowgirl breaks that barrier, a 10-second penalty is added.

King + Country

On Wednesday, Aug. 17 at 7 p.m., two-time Grammy award-winning duo for KING & COUNTRY will perform live as part of the Bank of the Paci c Grandstand Entertainment Series.

Brothers Joel and Luke Smallbone were propelled into superstardom with the release of their critically acclaimed sophomore album, Run Wild. Live Free. Love Strong., which debuted at No. 1 on iTunes and was certi ed gold.

Joel and Luke, who have become American citizens, learned about hope, love and support from their tight-knit family.

eir parents raised seven children in Sydney, Australia, before moving to Nashville in 1991.

Music became the family business.

eir charismatic father was a music promoter and sister Rebecca St. James became a successful Christian music artist, so the duo’s teen years were spent working as part of her road crew.

When Luke was 19 and Joel was 21, they formed a band

and began writing and recording the body of work that would become for KING & COUNTRY.

ey released their debut album, Crave, in 2012 and won New Artist of the Year at the 2013 Dove Awards, where they received six nominations.

In what has become a fullcircle moment, they wrote Never Give Up with sister Rebecca for the new album.

Once novices, they are now

their sister’s peers and have a shared understanding of the di culties of being frequently away from home.

“We learned the craft of music and fell in love with it on the road with Rebecca,” Joel says. “In some ways, for KING & COUNTRY is a legacy band of Rebecca’s. It’s a real special moment to be able to have that creative collaboration after all of these years with her.”

e album’s theme of adventure and exploration ends poetically with Pioneers, a lush song about the romance and realities of long-term commitment.

Fittingly, wives Moriah and Courtney join them on thenal track.

“In a time where commitment can be hard to come by — the through-thick-and-

thin/death-do-us-part kind of commitment — it’s a song that celebrates that kind of love,” Joel says.

Perhaps it’s no surprise that the duo felt compelled to embark on this musical pilgrimage because they have

been two of our most prescient storytellers in recent years, addressing issues even before they became part of the national conversation. It’s as if they know what we need to hear exactly when we need to hear it.

For instance, their 2016 No. 1 hit Priceless, which also

inspired the Smallbones’ human-tra cking themed movie by the same name, celebrates a woman’s worth. Several years before the #MeToo phenomenon, the Smallbones sparked a movement highlighting a woman’s value that continues to grow and evolve today.

ey began writing and recording songs about hope and love several years ago for Burn e Ships, messages that are vital during these tumultuous times. eir music provides answers, comfort and a rmation, while o ering a constant reminder that we aren’t alone, even in our darkest times.

Lynden Tribune 2022 Fair Magazine 20

“We never want to be a voice of critique or criticism, but a voice of, ‘Maybe if we shifted our perspective, what would we see?’ at is the beauty of music,” Joel says. “We ask the questions of ourselves: ‘I want to have joy. I want to nd a way. When I am faced with despair, struggle or hardship, what can I do?’”

e RIAA Platinum-selling act’s live show has been hailed as a must-see concert event that continues to wow sold-out crowds whether in the U.S., Australia, Germany, Netherlands, or New Zealand.

Right Round jumped from number 58 to the top spot in one week in late February. e song broke a record for the most digital one week sales in the US, with 636,000, beating the previous record he had set himself with Low.

Right Round sampled You Spin Me Round (Like a Record), a 1985 hit by British band Dead or Alive. Right Round also became Flo Rida’s rst chart-topping song in the United Kingdom.

e second o cial single was Sugar, which featured R&B singer Wynter Gordon.

e song reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Jump, featuring singer Nelly Furtado, was the third o cial single and was released on July 27, 2009, in the United Kingdom, and July 28, 2009, worldwide.

Be on You, featuring singer Ne-Yo, was the album’s fourth o cial single, released on Oct. 6, 2009.

Both songs charted in the top 100 in various countries. “Available,” featuring Akon, was going to be released on iTunes but was cancelled.

A music video was, however, shot in mid2009. R.O.O.T.S. debuted at number eight on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 55,000 copies in its rst week.

As of August 2009, the album has sold 223,000 copies in the United States, and 536,000 worldwide.

By the end of 2009, the album sold 247,000 copies in the US, becoming the eighth best selling rap album of 2009.

His most recent record, Wild Ones, was released in 2012, although the EP My House came out in 2015.

Since then Flo Rida has released nine singles, with a tenth, What a Night, on the way.

Country music duo Big & Rich is one of the grandstand performers at this year’s Northwest Washington Fair, 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19.

A band, a brand, a bond and a brotherhood: Big Kenny Alphin and John Rich, aka Big & Rich, have blazed an indelible mark on modern country music, not simply by breaking the rules, but by setting them on re.

Very notably, the pair calls the shots with ownership of their master recordings and music publishing rights through Big & Rich Records in partnerships with irty Tigers/ e Orchard and Kobalt.

Additionally, both contribute generously as philanthropists and ourish as lifestyle entrepreneurs.

John is driven and intense, while Kenny’s motto of “Love Everybody” exempli es his idealistic philosophy.

“I think Kenny and I are a great representation of how

Americans should be in general,” says John. “We disagree on a lot of things. But the things we agree on override our disagreements. We have a drink and get back on stage and it’s all good.” Big Kenny concurs with this assessment. “I think we both bring a balance to each other, no matter what the situation is. at’s what makes relationships good when you have that dynamic.”

Big & Rich inked with Warner Bros Records. From their 2004 debut, the triple platinum Horse of a Di erent Color and their hit “Save a Horse, Ride A Cowboy,” the duo evolved into one of country music’s most auspicious partnerships.

e song “Rollin’ ( e Ballad of Big & Rich), laid down the law with prophetic lines, “Country boys don’t rock and

roll/Yeah the record man told me so.”

Clearly, this record man was wrong. Garnering multiple Grammy, ACM, CMA and CMT Music Award nominations, subsequent best-selling collections include ‘Comin’ to Your City,’ ‘Between Raising Hell’ and ‘Amazing Grace,’ Hillbilly Jedi, Gravity – which delivered three consecutive Top 10 hits – and their most recent collection, Did It For e Party, that debuted at Number One on the sales charts.

Trademarking the phrase Redneck Riviera, John Rich founded a club with the name in downtown Nashville; launched a line of boots available in all 50 states; began a partnership to manufacture and distribute beef jerky and now has a line of whiskey in

Work Hard, Play Hard is the company’s motto.

“It’s basically an extension of my personality, which is pro-work ethic, pro-American, pro-veteran and pro-active duty,” John says.

Last year alone, Redneck Riviera Whiskey paid for 37 college grants for family members of American military killed or disabled in the line of duty.

Within three years, a number of these artists had signed major label deals, including Gretchen Wilson who emerged as a vital new voice with chart hits “Here for the Party,” co-written with John and Kenny, and “Redneck Woman,” her collaboration with John Rich.

In the past decade-plus, their signature anthem “Comin’ to Your City,” has red up football fans as the theme song for ESPN College Game Day.

e band has expanded their presence immeasurably through music videos and television appearances, including John Rich’s victorious stint as the winner of Celebrity Apprentice when he raised $1.2 million dollars for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

e hotel, casino and 2,500seat performance venue are located in Deadwood, the rst town where Kenny and John played together with the name Big & Rich on the ticket. Here they met local resident Niles Harris, a Vietnam veteran whose story inspired their signature song ‘8th of November.’

Big Kenny, long known as “ e Universal Ambassador of Love” is currently rolling out his own line of lifestyle brands called ‘Peace, Love & Happy Hour’ and ‘Pub of Love,’ where his motto is “Celebrate e Good Times.”

Sales will support his “Love Everybody Foundation”, an umbrella organization for

causes close to his heart including supporting veterans and rst responders, creating backpack programs for kids here in the U.S. and providing ongoing aid for children in need worldwide.

Big & Rich were honored with the 2016 CRS Artist Humanitarian Award for their support of a spectrum of humanitarian e orts, from visiting individual patients in hospitals, to staging bene t concerts for the Country Music Hall of Fame and the 173rd Airborne Memorial, to their well-documented U.S. and international outreach.

e duo has made a point of helping underprivileged children and families at home and abroad in struggling countries like Uganda, Sudan,

Haiti and Kenya, among others. St. Jude Children’s Hospital, e T.J. Martell Foundation, Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, the 173rd Airborne Memorial Fund, Clean Water, the Special Olympics and Second Harvest Food Bank are just a few of their worthy causes.

When they rst joined forces, John Rich originally from Amarillo, Texas, had been a vocalist and bassist for the band Lonestar, was collaborating on songs with other Nashville artists, and envisioning a solo career.

Kenny Alphin, from Culpeper, Virginia, was also a solo artist and writer signed to his rst major record deal at Hollywood Records. John, Kenny

With separate and combined enterprises, causes, and concerns, Big & Rich envisions these endeavors as extensions of the music. Notes John Rich, “In the pursuit of the American Dream, if you want something, think hard, work hard, and go after it. ere’s no guarantee you’re going to get it, but the fact you’re allowed to pursue it is where you should nd your happiness.”

Says Big Kenny, “I want to be a fun and entertaining positive voice and entity in my community, in my country, and in the world. I hope people know that those are the things that are important to me. And when they leave a Big & Rich concert, they should feel like they’ve just witnessed the greatest show on earth.”

Small Animal Experience is no small deal

Did you know an ape has a baby, a bear has a cub, a bee has larva?

ere’s a place at the Northwest Washington Fair in Lynden that teaches these very types of things in a hands-on way.

e Small Animal Experience focuses on seeing and spending time with small animals as the name implies. A long-time fan favorite for fairgoers, last year 35,000 visits were made here. is exhibit came out of a local 4-H group, the Barn Buddies, who still spend the year prepping and planning for this big project and gaining leadership skills.

“Our goal is to teach an awareness of agriculture through cute animals,” Brooke Vander Veen Weimer said.

is year four generations of family are spending months to bring together the baby animals. While Debbie Vander Veen founded this living display in 2009, her parents, Bob and Pauline Van Weerdhuizen, and her daughter Brooke will be meeting and greeting. Brooke, a former agriculture education teacher, is now a stay-at-home mother and will be bringing her soon-to-be six-monthold baby son with her. She took over the lead role in 2017.

Local community members, 4-H and FFA supply the animals. Who will be there this year of the animal kind? “Extremely cute calves which are cross bred for dairy and beef. It’s not seen as often.”

Some of the calves come from the farms of former 4-H members who went from raising the animals for the fair to now having their own business in raising them. ey will be joined by a miniature horse, very playful goats, guinea pigs, and lots of rabbits of all sizes.

is year the sow and piglets will be inside the Henry Jansen Barn while the other animals will be near the barn in a tent.

For this year’s Small Animal Experience, Aug. 15 from 10 a.m. until 9:30 p.m., visitors can interact withthe small animals inside of the Henry Jansen Building and also in a second locationin a tent nearby. (Elisa Claassen for the Tribune)

slots are lled to bring in the animals, clean the pens, feed them, and to talk with visitors.

Others are on-call at all hours to make sure the animals get the care they need.

New this year is a story time which families and animals will

enjoy. As visitors go through the exhibit and ooh and ahhh over the cute babies, they can partake in a scavenger hunt. By the end of the Fair a winner from the hunt will receive a nice bundle of goodies mailed to them, Brooke said.

Hand washing stations are set up around the exhibit. Guests are encouraged to come with questions for the volunteers to learn more about the animals.

Arabian club continues strong in horse barn

Members

It can be a challenge to keep the agricultural focus of a fair, even in the center of agriculture as for the Northwest Washington Fair of Lynden.

Horse showing is still going strong, however, in the big building and arena on the south end of the grounds.

Horse groups speci c to breed are less common at the Lynden fair now than in the past. But one breed has continued to make a splash — Arabians. In fact, the North-

west Washington Arabian Horse Association is the last breed group at the fair, according to Janie Westho , the club’s president.

She is a true horse lover.

“I love Arabians. I like them because they’re sensitive and very responsive,” Westho said. “ ey have a lot of endurance. ey don’t quit.”

Westho believes the association has survived as long as it has at the fair because it also welcomes owners of non-Ara-

bian breeds. As a result, the club’s horses and riders compete in a number of events at the fair.

e Northwest Arabian club has about 10-12 members who show at the fair each year, Westho said. is year, nine horses will be taken, as stall space tends to be limited. Riders will participate in a number of classes, from halter to English and Western.

With about 50 members in all, this regional club is part of

a national association. NWAHA hosts other events such as a Spring Open Show and the Northwest Reining Association Show in the fall and it participates in the Lynden Farmers Day Parade.

ey are often recognized for their “Arabian-style” dressup to honor the breed and the Arabian tradition, and this color and air can be seen at the fair too.

Member Betty Squire said showing at the fair is by far

say it’s a lot of work, but it’s also worthwhile to have fun and see people at the annual Northwest Washington Fair in Lynden

the club’s biggest event of the year. She said everyone has been busier at the fair over the past few years, often showing in 1-2 classes a day.

What is her favorite part of participating in the fair?

“Each year, I ask myself that,” Squire replied with a laugh. “It’s a lot of work, and I always think ‘why am I doing this?’ [ e best part] is just hanging out with the people, I think. We see a lot of people that you only see at the fair.”

One competition the club excels in is herdsmanship — referring to the cleanliness and organization of the horses and stall area of each club — which NWAHA has won for the past three years, Westho said.

However, the main focus is always on having fun and improving overall as a club in competition from year to year.

“We treat it as a fun thing. Everyone likes to win, but if you go in expecting to win

every event, you’ll be disappointed. If you go in with the idea of having fun, that’s a lot better,” Westho said.

Arabian horses participate in the light horses open classes, which also include buckskins, half-Arabs, Appaloosas, paints and pintos, and quarter horses. e draft or heavy horse division, on the other hand, includes Belgians, Ha ingers and other stockier breeds known for their driving and pulling strength.

According to Lynda Revak, there used to be other breedspeci c clubs at the Lynden

fair, including a buckskin club and a quarter horse club.

ere are also color associations focused on breed colors such as appaloosa, buckskin and paint horses.

Revak said fewer people are raising and keeping horses on their own property than in years past, which has changed the agricultural landscape not only in the region but also in showing at the fair. Accessibility and cost are also issues in horse-keeping, she said.

“It’s moving from people having their own horses on their own property to people boarding horses,” Revak said. “In the past, something like 85

percent of kids in 4-H lived on farms with horses. Now they can only keep doing it if they can a ord it.”

Squire, who has been a member of NWAHA since 1993, said this is true within the club as well, and that allowing people to work with horses who may not come by the opportunity as easily is especially important to keeping the club strong.

“We try to incorporate as many kids as we can. Not all kids are able to do 4-H. You have to go to so many meetings to participate, and they have to do a vigorous showing schedule. We’re a lot more

laid-back than that,” Squire said.

According to Westho , participants in the club range in age from 11 to 60.

In preparation for the fair classes, Westho said, members of the Northwest Washington Arabian Horse Association will ride two to three times per week while lining up decorations and information for their stalls.

“[Our success] depends on if the horses have showed before. Some horses that have been showing for the past few years hopefully will perform better this year,” Westho said.

Rodeo 101: Events explained

PROFESSIONAL RODEO ACTION

Consists of two types of competitions - roughstock events and timed events. In the roughstock events, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and bull riding, a contestant’s score is equally dependent upon their performance and the animal’s performance. To earn a qualified score, the contestant, while using only one hand, must stay aboard a bucking horse or bull for eight seconds. If the rider touches the animal, themselves or any of their equipment with their free hand, they are disqualified. In saddle bronc and bareback riding, a contestant must mark out their horse; that is, they must exit the chute with their spurs set above the horse’s shoulders and hold them there until the horse’s front feet hit the ground after the initial jump out of the chute. Failing to do so results in disqualification.

During the regular season, two judges each score a contestant’s qualified ride by awarding 0-25 points for the rider’s performance and 0-25 points for the animal’s e ort. The judges’ scores are then combined to determine the contestant’s score. A perfect score is 100 points.

In timed events: steer wrestling, team roping, tie-down roping, and barrel racing; cowboys and cowgirls at the other end of the arena compete

against the clock, as well as against each other. A contestant’s goal is to post the fastest time in his or her event. In steer wrestling and the roping events, calves and steers are allowed a head start. The competitor, on horseback, starts in a threesided fenced area called a box. The fourth side opens into the arena.

A rope barrier is stretched across that opening and is tied to the calf or steer with a breakaway loop. Once the calf or steer reaches the head-start point - predetermined by the size of the arena - the barrier is automatically released. If a cowboy breaks that barrier, a 10-second

penalty is added.

RODEO TERMS

• Added money: purse money supplied by the rodeo committee. It is added to the entry fees to make up the total prize money.

• Bareback Rigging: the only equipment a bareback rider has to help him ride. It is made of leather and resembles a suitcase strap. It is held on the horse’s back with a cinch, just like a saddle.

• Barrier: a rope stretched across the front of the box from which the roper or steer wrestler’s horse emerges. This rope is attached to the steer or calf and allows the animal a head start.

• Bronc Rein: rein attached to the horse’s halter for balance while riding a saddle bronc.

• Bull Rope: a flat braided rope used in bull riding as the only handhold for the bull rider. It is wrapped around the bull and then around the rider’s hand.

• Chute: the pen that holds the animal in order for the rider to get on and prepare for his ride.

• Flank Strap: a fleecelined leather strap that is placed behind the horse’s rib cage in the flank area. A soft rope is used in the bull riding event. Flank straps are not fastened tightly and do not hurt the animals. If this strap is tightened too tight, the animal will refuse to buck.

• Hazer: a cowboy who rides beside a steer on the opposite side of the steer wrestler. His job is to keep the steer running straight and close to the contestant’s horse.

• Pickup Man: a mounted cowboy who helps the rider o of a bronc when the ride is completed. The pickup man also removes the flank strap from the bronc and leads it out of the corral.

• Re-Ride: another ride given to a bronc or bull rider when the first ride is ruled by judges as unsatisfactory. Reasons for granting a re-ride: being fouled on the chutes or the horse failing to buck hard enough to give the rider a fair chance.

• Rank: a bull or bronc that is hard to ride.

• Score: the length of the head start given to the steer or calf in the timed events.
