Heritage Society Welcome Olde Fashioned Christmas Silver Anniversary: Preserving Our Heritage for 25 Years The Ferndale Heritage Society would like to welcome you to our 25th annual Olde Fashioned Christmas at Pioneer Park. We are especially excited to have you here with us this year as we reflect on the history of this special Ferndale tradition.
take you back in time to the early days of settlement when everyone came together in the winter cold to enjoy the holiday season in simple, old-fashioned style. There is something for every generation. Youngsters will enjoy all the activities such as crafts and baking, young adults will enjoy learning about the history of Whatcom County and how people lived their lives in the past as they tour the park, and older folk will enjoy memories of old fashioned holidays of their own. Please bring this program along with you so you can join in the singing of Christmas carols as you trot through downtown Ferndale on a horse-drawn carriage ride that is included in your paid admission. And please don’t forget to thank our wonderful volunteers for their many hours of preparation and hosting. We will look forward to your return each year, and we hope you will make our Olde Fashioned Christmas an annual holiday destination for the next twenty-five years!
Twenty-five years ago, in November 1992, Louise Sager and Diana Weden, then members of the Old Settler’s Association in Ferndale, decided to open up the park and a few of the cabins and invite townsfolk to have a glimpse of an old-fashioned pioneer Christmas. They met with Donna Pollman and Shirley Durham, and together went to the Whatcom County Museum for advice. In December 1992, Pioneer Park staged the first official ‘Olde Fashioned Christmas’. Two or three cabins were opened and decorated, volunteers dressed in pioneer costumes, and townsfolk were invited to stroll around and enjoy a unique holiday experience. Visitors really got the feel of those times with no heat in the cabins and dim lighting during the coldest, darkest Proceeds from our events maintain and support continued time of year! improvements, acquisitions, and educational programs for The following spring, in March 1993, the Ferndale Heritage historic Pioneer Park. Olde Fashioned Christmas 2017
Remembering Olde Fashioned Christmas Past... Andrea Beilner shares with us the story of her association with Pioneer Park and Olde Fashioned Christmas: The Ferndale Heritage is an extension of my family. My grandmother started bringing me to Heritage society events when I was three years old. Now, being 26 I still enjoy every moment. Seeing the enjoyment and happiness on all the kids’ and adults’ faces makes my Holiday season complete every year. I continue to volunteer no matter where I live because it will continually hold a special place in my heart. I continually look forward to the time I get to spend with the other volunteers, but most of all with my grandmother, Baerbal Marquart. Many of you might
know her has “Babs” but I know her as grandma. The time I get to spend with her is always special. It’s how we define our relationship and I strive to be like her in all her ways of stewardship. Overall, Christmas time is a very special time for me and the Ferndale Heritage Society. This story is what makes my holiday season truly magical. Holidays are not complete without these feelings. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!! Enjoy every moment with family and friends.
Sue Brand shares with us the history of Larry Hanson’s train collection, part of which is on display in the Foster House during Olde Fashioned Christmas: Larry Hanson’s love of trains began more than 75 years ago, when he was five years old. Back where he and his family lived then, they were two blocks from the railroad station. Train rides to Tacoma took just 15 minutes but the trips were unforgettable for Larry. He took a trip with his grandma from Enumclaw up to his grandpa’s logging camp in the forest. The train stopped in the dark woods Serving Whatcom County for 37 years to let them off and they had to walk the rest of the way. Larry’s family took in a Gift boarder who worked at the Available! railroad station. Little Larry would probe him with endless questions about trains. Miniature engines, cars,
train tracks followed as Larry started his train collection. One collection was lost when the family home burned downed. Another was lost while Larry was away at college. In his later adult years, Larry’s model trains became a respite from work as he created a miniature world of trains and industry. In his home hobby shop his train collection chugged through a landscape of model hills and tunnels with many freight trains, logging trains and passenger lines. Now 81, Larry has passed much of his collection to his four children and 11 grandchildren, but he still maintains a collection of his own of nearly 40 engines, many railcars and dozens of buildings. At our Olde Fashioned Christmas this year, we are privileged to have part of Larry’s wonderful collection on display for all our volunteers and visitors to enjoy!

The Holeman House School House The Holeman Schoolhouse is decorated in greens and silver stars in honor of the twenty-fifth anniversary of "Olde Fashioned Christmas". The stars will be several sizes and be placed everywhere. The children are welcomed in to sit in one of the old school desks where they can write letters to Santa. The children can then take the letters next door to mail at the Barrett Post Office. Santa loves to get pictures as well as letters. For children 12 and under, be sure to write your whole name and mailing address so Santa will be able to write back to you. The Holeman House was built in 1890. It was built by Mr. John Holeman on a homestead in the Mountain View Township, which is west of Ferndale on Mountain View Road between Elder Road and North Star Road. The log building became the one room Schoolhouse when it was moved to Pioneer Park. We hope you will have all kinds of fun at the Olde Fashioned Christmas in Pioneer Park. We look forward to your visit to the School House to see what school was like for pioneer children!

Van Buren Cabin
There’s always hot cider or cocoa and delicious cookies just waiting for you! All the cookies are donated by local businesses so check the list and be sure to thank them. While you eat, listen to the wonderful musicians that donate their time and talents to add to our holiday spirit. Meet you in the kitchen at Olde Fashioned Christmas!
The Van Buren Post Office and General Store in Pioneer Park is a cabin that was rarely used, probably because of its small size. Pioneer Park already had a post office at the Barrett House and a general store at the Parker House, but did not have a bank. Society member, Ron Wilson recently adopted this little gem and spent time this past summer re-chinking the inside and outside walls.
When you’re finished in the Tillicum House, don’t forget that your paid admission ticket entitles you to climb in the awaiting horse drawn wagon for the next ride that leaves the park and makes a loop through downtown Ferndale. The wagon leaves approximately every 10 minutes and stages right outside the Tillicum House. (Last wagon ride leaves the park 1/2 hour before closing, 8:30pm).
Early banks were established throughout Whatcom County and it was decided to utilize the Van Buren cabin as a bank. On display are old piggy banks, other old banks and reproductions of old banks, an adding machine, check cutting machine, and a large safe from the bank in the town of Custer, safe deposit box, old promissory notes, coins and currency, and other items related to old banks.

Let it Snow Oh the weather outside is frightful, But the fire is so delightful, And since we’ve no place to go, Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! It doesn’t show signs of stopping, And I’ve bought some corn for popping, The lights are turned way down low, Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! When we finally kiss good night, How I’ll hate going out in the storm! But if you’ll really hold me tight, All the way home I’ll be warm. The fire is slowly dying, And, my dear, we’re still good-bying, But as long as you love me so, Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

Oh Holy Night
Away in a Manger
Oh holy night! The stars are brightly shining It is the night of the dear Savior’s birth! Long lay the world in sin and error pining Till he appear’d and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!
Away in a manger, no crib for His bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head; The stars in the heavens looked down where He lay, The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.
Fall on your knees Oh hear the angel voices Oh night divine Oh night when Christ was born Oh night divine Oh night divine Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming Here come the wise men from Orient land The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger In all our trials born to be our friend. Truly He taught us to love one another His law is love and His gospel is peace Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother And in His name all oppression shall cease Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we, Let all within us praise His holy name.
The cattle are lowing, the poor Baby wakes, But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes. I love Thee, Lord Jesus; look down from the sky And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh. Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask Thee to stay Close by me forever and love me I pray! Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care, And fit us for Heaven to live with Thee there. Away in a manger, no crib for His bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head; The stars in the heavens looked down where He lay, The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas Frosty the Snowman Frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul, With a corncob pipe and a button nose and two eyes made out of coal. Frosty the snowman is a fairy tale, they say, He was made of snow but the children know how he came to life one day. There must have been some magic in that old silk hat they found. For when they placed it on his head he began to dance around. O, Frosty the snowman was alive as he could be, And the children say he could laugh and play just the same as you and me. Thumpetty thump thump, thumpetty thump thump, Look at Frosty go. Thumpetty thump thump, thumpetty thump thump, Over the hills of snow. Frosty the snowman knew the sun was hot that day, So he said, “Let’s run and we’ll have some fun now before I melt away.” Down to the village, with a broom stick in his hand, Running here and there all around the square saying, Catch me if you can. He led them down the streets of town right to the traffic cop. And he only paused a moment when he heard him holler “Stop!” For Frosty the snow man had to hurry on his way, But he waved goodbye saying, “Don’t you cry, I’ll be back again some day.” Thumpetty thump thump, thumpetty thump thump, Look at Frosty go. Thumpetty thump thump, thumpetty thump thump, Over the hills of snow.
Have yourself a merry little Christmas, Let your heart be light From now on, our troubles will be out of sight Have yourself a merry little Christmas, Make the Yule-tide gay, From now on, our troubles will be miles away. Here were are as in olden days, happy golden days of yore. Faithful friends who are dear to us gather near to us once more. Through the years we all will be together If the Fates allow Hang a shining star upon the highest bough. And have yourself a merry little Christmas now.
Silent Night Silent night! Holy night! All is calm, all is bright, Round yon Virgin Mother and Child. Holy Infant, so tender and mild. Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace. Silent night! Holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight; Glories stream from heaven afar, Heavenly host sing, Alleluia, Christ, the Savior is born! Christ the Savior is born! Silent night! Holy night! Son of God, love’s pure light, Radiant beams from Thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth, Jesus, Lord at Thy birth.
