More titles on the way?
WHATCOM COUNTY — If we have learned anything from the fall and winter sports seasons it is that northern Whatcom County knows how to bring home the hardware.
In the fall, Lynden football placed first, Mount Baker football placed second and Lynden Christian soccer placed second.
In the winter we saw three basketball championships and a Mount Baker state wrestling title, among other second and third place finishes. The question is, will we see more in the spring?
Last season, Nooksack Valley softball went on a 26-1 tear straight through the postseason and brought back their first state title
In track, Lynden’s Troy Petz and Mount Baker’s Davin Beason brought home championships for their events.
Meridian rounded out the spring 2022 championship season with Jor-
dan Hallmark winning the 110-meter hurdles and their 4x100 relay team placing first.
For the 2023 season, there is some championship potential floating in the air. The Pioneers softball team has a very solid chance to return to the championship game despite losing some big senior talent. They are a well coached team that is carrying the momentum, but watch out for Mount Baker.
It is almost certain that northern Whatcom County will bring back some track and field championships. Petz is still around and will be trying to break is own school long jump record.
Meridian and LC will also have a handful of contenders that could break through and win the gold. Not to mention up-and-coming baseball squads like Lynden and Meridian.
It is going to be a fun season of sports.

Key Returners:
P - Jake Mason, senior OF - Andrew James, senior UTL - Jordan Mason, senior
The Scoop:
2022 record: 12-8
Ferndale is coming off a decent season and is loaded with senior talent. They are bringing back 10 seniors and will look to make a push at regionals and state this year. Despite the deep senior roster they are losing their biggest hitter, Landen Hatchett.
The Golden Eagles will have to find another way to produce power in the lineup. One solution could be Jordan Mason who had three home runs last year.
Jake Mason and Andrew James were both all-first team players last year. Ferndale is positioned to have a solid 2023.

It was a rough 2022 season, but Nooksack Valley has had a more experienced roster this year and potential to make a splash if all the pieces fall into place. Henry Lind, De Lange and DeWispelaere are all players to watch for the Pioneers.

Lynden
Season notes
Key Returners:
P/C - Lane Simonsen, junior INF/P - Coston Parcher, senior OF/P - Lane Heeringa, senior
The Scoop:
2022 record: 19-6
The Lions have arguably the most talented roster in the NWC this year. Last year, they were first in the NWC and the No. 6 seed in the state tournament but suffered an early exit at the hands of Enumclaw.
Lane Simonsen is the star pitcher for the Lions and last year, as just a sophomore, he was named Pitcher of the Year. Lynden also has Cory White at the helm and he was named Coach of the Year in 2022.
The Lynden Lions’ 2023 roster is: Coston Parcher, Lane Simonsen, Adason Holzer, Trey Baar, Lane Heeringa, Dane Marti, Cooper Moore, Kaedan Hermanutz, Jaydin Oaks, River Langstraat, Isaiah Oudman, Eli Migchelbrink, Lincoln VanDiest, Kobe Baar, Tristan Thomas, Campbell Nolte, Spencer Adams, Jesus Ortiz, Kael Stapleton, Matthew Carroll, Dylan Reyes, Austin Tolsma.
While the Lions boast the best pitching rotation in the NWC they also have batters to watch. Coston Parcher, Lane Heeringa and Kobe Baar will provide steady offensive production. Lynden is bringing back eight seniors and will have young guns to contribute to the team as well. They are poised for a successful 2023 campaign.

The Scoop:
2022 record: 10-11
The Lyncs are bringing back pretty much their whole 2022 team into this year. What was an inexperienced team last year now has the capability to elevate their play in the 2023 season. Senior Isaac Paxton is a player to watch on the mound and at the plate. The Lyncs only have three seniors, but are flush with talented sophomores and juniors like Austin Engles and Treven Blair. LC should make a strong push in the NWC this year.
The LC Lyncs’ 2023 roster is: Austin Engels, Brody Bouwman, Carson Libolt, Carter Seigman, Dexter Zylstra, Edward DeYoung, Eli Maberry, Isaac Paxton, Jase Postma, Jaxon Huleatt, Jonah Terpstra, Josh Eisenberg, Lane Dykstra, Logan Brink, Luke Moorlag, Sam Kok, Treven Blair, Treyson Johnson.

Season notes
Key Returners:
P/INF - Jaeger Fyfe, sophomore P/INF - Jonah Aase, sophomore P/UTL - Hunter Jones, senior
The Scoop:
2022 record: 14-11
The Trojans are set up to rival Lynden in the NWC and make a strong push at the 1A state level.
They are bringing back eight of their starters from last year’s team that advanced to the state tournament. Meridian was eliminated in round one of the 2022 state tournament but there was a freak injury in the game that derailed the team.
This year, Aase and Fyfe will be the aces of the rotation after successful 2022 campaigns. Aase will also play first base and brings a solid bat to the lineup. Not to mention, both of those players are only sophomores with tons of room to grow.
The Meridian Trojans’ 2023 roster is: Silas Berschauer, Jonah Aase, Hunter Jones, Tyrel Brooks, Jaeger Fyfe, Alex Short, Tyson Timmer, Tristan Wang, Blake Johnson, Jacob Amundson, Ian Forbes, Lincoln Hoefer.
The 2023 Meridian Trojans’ schedule can be found at meridiantrojans.com.
Tyrel Brooks, Ian Forbes and Silas Berschauer are steady presences in the starting lineup and will provide the team with consistent bats.
Meridian is a young team, but they are a talented one that can beat anyone on a given day.

P/UTL - Payton Akers, senior P/INF - Mallory Butenschoen, sophomore
The Scoop:
2022 record: 5-12
The 2022 campaign did not go according to plan for the Golden Eagles, but with a roster that only lost four seniors they could turn the corner.
Akers and Butenschoen will be the two pitchers for the Golden Eagles and will have to carry a heavy load throughout the season.
The Golden Eagles have shown potential for explosive production from their starting lineup. In Ferndale’s first game of the 2023 season they defeated Bellingham 26-0. It is ridiculous to score 26 in one game, so if the Golden Eagles keep it up they could be in for a nice season.
The Ferndale Golden Eagles’ 2023 roster is: Giana Thompson, Hannah Swan, Hailey Hermann, Mercedes Hintz, Mallory Butenschoen, Julia Tiersma, Kaelin Blakley, Melina Saxman, Talia Locker, Madison Sobjack, Celisse Castleberry, Payton Akers, Laveena LaJuan.

Season notes
Key Returners:
P/OF - Trinity Andrew, junior INF - Lucy White, senior OF - Childrey DeJong, junior
The Scoop:
2022 record: 21-5
The Lions had a very successful 2022 season. They came in fourth place in the 2A state tournament. They had four allleague selections in the 2022 year, but all four of those allleague selections have graduated. Lynden will need to rely on other players to fill the gap left by the graduated players.
Campbell and Childrey Dejong will be players to watch on the Lions. Despite only being a freshman, Campbell has a solid bat and should see consistent playing time.
The Lynden Lions’ 2023 roster is: Lucy White, Chloe Wittenberg, Grace Potter, Melanie Anderson, Kaitlyn Kalma, Childrey DeJong, Sierra Alexander, Campbell DeJong, Rebecca Powell, Trinity Andrew, Ashley Nunez, Kasi Thomas.
White is another bat who should bring a lot to the Lions this year. As a contact hitter she will hit for a high average and move throughout the batting lineup.
Even though the Lions lost a lot of talent from last year’s class, they will be just fine with Ed Bomber at the helm.

Key Returners:
C/INF - Karsyn Postma, senior INF - Karlie Korthuis, senior P/INF - Annie Zylstra
The Scoop: 2022 record: 11-11
The Lyncs are under new head coaching management with Tom Zylstra taking over as the lead. He will guide a talented LC group with seven seniors coming back to play one last season.
Postma was an all-league second team member last year and is a big presence in the field and at the plate. It will be fun to see how far LC can take it this year.

Season notes
Key Returners:
INF - Annalee Cohn, sophomore OF - Madison Barter, senior OF - Hayley Jimmie, senior
The Scoop:
2022 record: 23-7
Mount Baker was one of the best 1A softball teams in the state last year. They saw Nooksack Valley in the semis but fell to the eventual winners of state.
The Mountaineers only lost a few seniors from last year, but they are still a very young team. One of their best players is Cohn, who was a first team all-league selection in 2022 as a freshman. She has a chance to be one of the best young stars in the NWC.
The Mount Baker Mountaineers 2023 varsity roster is: Natalie Van Liew, Annalee Cohn, Cadence Cloninger, Gracie Zender, Ella Maloley, Hayley Jimmie, Zaida Haynes, Madison Barter, Maddie Jungquist, Lauren Valum, Ava Jeretzky, Sydney VanBrocklin.
Headed by one of the best coaches around, Ron Lepper, the Mountaineers will always hover near the top of the standings and are expected to make another deep push this year throughout the regular and postseason.

2022 record: 3-18
It was a tough 2022 season for the Trojans, but this year they are loaded with young talent. With just one senior on the team, the underclassmen will step up and improve on their 2022 record.
The Meridian Trojan 2023 varsity roster is: Emily Kuljis, Katie Prengaman, Malia McCauley, Kaelyn Blanchard, Sydney Tenkley, Hailey Horsmon, Jaclyn Tolsma, Natalie Schultz, Lorelai Margeson, Sofia Meza-Sullivan, Madelyn Ritter, Josie Somera, Dakota Hill, Vanessa Gatica, Lexi Neil.
Nooksack Valley
Season notes
Key Returners:
INF - Sierra Anderson, senior INF - Lainey Kimball, junior UTL - Kennedy Burke, sophomore
The Scoop:
2022 record: 26-1
Nooksack Valley was the best 1A softball team in the state last year. They dominated the whole season and brought home their first ever championship trophy.
The Pioneers lost their first game of the year and then went on a 25-0 run straight through the championship.
This year they will be looking to repeat. The Pioneers did lose seven seniors from last year’s team, but that should not deter them from making a deep run again.
With young stars like Kimball and Burke, among others, their lineup will be just as strong.
The Nooksack Valley Pioneers’ 2023 varsity roster is: Cece Rogers, Kennedy Burke, Kestyn Wagter, MaKenzie Likkel, Ryan Ross, Sierra Anderson, Emily Pickard, Lainey Kimball, Payton Bartl, Shelby Mason, Gracie Rutgers, Alayna Dykstra, Ella Perry.
Anderson is a returning senior infielder and could be one of the strongest hitters in the NWC. Tom Harmon is returning for his 37th year with Nooksack Valley softball hot off winning the 2022 Coach of the Year award. Expect Nooksack Valley to be an explosive fixture in the NWC.

The Scoop:
With his brother Jordan Medcalf graduating, Logan has taken over the mantle for Lynden golf team. Last season he finished 6th at the 2A state tournament and should be right there again this year.
Season notes
The Scoop:
Last season, LC was the most successful northern Whatcom County golf squad.
They had six golfers compete at the state level and two of them finished in the top 20.
Griffin Dykstra was one of those two. He came in at 19th place with a score of 165. Ty Hagen was their best finisher at fourth place, but he has since graduated. Tommy Meyer was another LC golfer who competed in state.
For the girls, Madeleine Engels finished just outside the top 20. She ended at 21st place in 1A state with a score of 206.
Meyer, Dykstra and Engels are all returning for another season among a plethora of talented young golfers. LC should again, have golfers at the state level.

Last season the Golden Eagles only had one state qualifier, but with another massive slate of rookie and experienced athletes coming in that could very well change.
Senior Ellie Ochoa is a sprinter to watch this season. Last year she put up the 14th best time in Ferndale’s recorded track history. She could get higher up that list this year.
Senior Conner Walcker is another one to watch. The Multisport athlete is a speed demon and has potential to climb up the ranks this year.

Most notably Troy Petz, the state champion long jumper. Last season Petz scored a 22-02 jump to win the gold. Petz is also highly ranked in Lynden school history for the 100, 200 and 400. He is a swiss army knife track athlete.
The Lions have other returning state track athletes along with Petz. Porter Wilhite placed fourth in the 400-meter last year at state and the record shows he set the fifth fastest 400-meter time in Lynden school history.
For the girls, Ella Frerichs is one of the best 400-meter runners they have. Records show she is ranked third in Lynden history for the 400-meter.
There are too many athletes to mention with not enough room, but Lynden is sure to have repeat success this year.

A young player to keep your eyes on is Avery Vanweerdhuizen. She placed third in the 100-meter hurdles as a freshman. She is going to keep getting better as she gets older and it is likely we will see her at state again this year.

The Scoop:
Meridian is another school in the Northwest Conference that had multiple athletes reach and place at the state level. Their boys 4 x 100 relay team even placed first and received the gold at the 1A state tournament.
Returning to the team this year from that relay team is Jase Klinkhammer, who also did very well in his individual events. He placed fifth in the 100-meter and third in the 200-meter. His 2023 campaign should bring new heights.
On the girls side, Erica Stotts is the standout. She is an expert hurdler and placed in the 100-meter and the 300-meter hurdles. She currently holds the second best time in each of those events in Meridian history.
The 2023 Meridian Trojans’ schedule can be found at meridiantrojans.com
Another standout is Logan Ignacio. She is a crosscountry star and just as talented in the track long distance events. Ignacio should climb up the leaderboards this year.

Mount Baker has an extensive roster full of athletes who could etch their name in school recordbooks. Brady Brunland is one of those athletes. He ranks in the top-10 in Mount Baker history for the 200 meter. His best time is one second away from the record. Tyla Olson and Alexander Dantzler also are nearing record breaking school times. There will be some fireworks for the Mountaineers this year.

The Pioneers had a successful 2022 campaign that featured three state placing athletes. This year Ryan Huges will be one of the stars. He placed in two events last year at state and his senior campaign should be something to watch. The Pioneers roster is not as big as some in the NWC, but if we know anything about Nooksack Valley, they thrive as they underdog.
