A Letter from the Mayor We would like to welcome you to our community here in Sumas. We are excited to have the opportunity to help you enjoy our family-oriented community. There are many non-profit organizations, rotary clubs, and supportive businesses that are constantly giving back to make Sumas thrive and flourish. There are some wonderful things that our town has to offer. The City of Sumas has 1,571 residents as of the beginning of 2018. Our residents enjoy the small town feel and the sense of community, helping each other. We have some of the most affordable utility costs and affordable housing costs in Whatcom County. Sumas also offers great services for all ages. There is an excellent elementary school in town for our children, beautiful parks for outdoor recreation and family outings, and a senior/community center that offers opportunities for our local seniors and other events as Kyle Christensen, Sumas Mayor well. There are a lot of family wage opportunities in our industrial park and other local businesses. The city has taken an active approach in reaching out to bring in new businesses and help support existing businesses. Since we are a border town with our Canadian friends to the north, there is a lot of vehicle and foot traffic that helps support our local economy and businesses. Please let us know if we can help you in any way. We hope you enjoy your time with us. Sincerely,

Kyle Christensen Mayor of Sumas

1-800-Williams

You may have never heard of Williams, but millions of Americans depend on us every day. Williams is one of the leading energy infrastructure companies in North America. We deliver about 14 percent of the natural gas consumed in the United States. Founded in 1908, the company has a long history of operating safely and reliably. One of Williams’ major assets is the Northwest Pipeline, which is a 4,000 mile natural gas transportation system crossing the states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah and Colorado. Our major customers are local gas utilities, power plants, and other industrial users. A primary source of gas for these customers is in British Columbia, CAN so Williams’ facility in Sumas, WA provides customers ideal access to that supply. Northwest Pipeline transports nearly 90 percent of the natural gas consumed in the State of

Washington and 80 percent of that passes through the Sumas facility, which was originally built in 1956 and has been expanded three times since then. Critical to Williams’ ability to operate safely and reliably is public awareness of buried utilities. We depend on excavators, home owners, and anyone digging more than 12 inches, to call 811 before starting work. Crews will respond within 48 hours to mark any buried utilities near the proposed excavation. If you should happen to accidentally strike a pipeline, it is important that you contact us immediately. Even minor damage could result in a future leak if not promptly repaired.

History of Sumas Sumas, pronounced “soo-mass,” is located in a fertile valley in northern Washington and shares a border with British Columbia, Canada. This name comes from a native word meaning “land without trees” as much of the area was covered by a large, shallow lake and a vast grassland known as Sumas Prairie. Surrounding the prairie were dense forests, with Cedar and Fir trees “more than 6 feet across”. The lake, river and streams provided food and transportation. In the 1850s the area began to change because of the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush. The Whatcom Trail, a remote and hazardous path, began in what is now Bellingham and made its way to the Fraser Valley. It has been said “there were thousands of goldseekers who traveled this trail to find their fortune!” Because of a plan to run a telegraph from the U.S. to Russia, it was decided to improve this path to “a road suitable for a pack trail not less than 6 feet in width”. The telegraph plan failed but we still have sections of Telegraph Road in use today! In 1872, Robert A. Johnson became the earliest known homesteader, followed by others over the years, and they formed a small “tent city”. The first building was constructed in 1890, housing a general store and saloon. More buildings quickly followed and Sumas became a thriving city with nine more saloons, five hotels, an opera house and a variety of businesses. In 1891 Sumas was incorporated and the railroads came to town! The Seattle Lake Shore and Eastern, the Bellingham Bay and British Columbia and the Canadian Pacific united in Sumas to provide service between Seattle, Whatcom (Bellingham) and Vancouver, B.C. With the trains came prospectors, loggers, trappers and entrepreneurs, along with fancy women and smugglers. Lumber from the many mills was transported to other cities. The population soared to over 2,000 residents! Hard times hit Sumas with the depression of 1893. Mills went bankrupt, logging camps closed

and all building stopped. Land values collapsed, the two banks closed and many lost all their money. With no industry for jobs, the residents were almost destitute and over half the population left the area. Gold, plus new saw technology in logging, started a recovery. In 1897 a trio from Sumas struck gold and started the Lone Jack Mine.

The 1920s brought the draining of Sumas Lake, increased agriculture, growing hops and tobacco plus poultry and dairy farms. In 1925 the Sumas Roundup, a three day rodeo, had 35,000 attendees from the U.S. and Canada! With the Depression of the ‘30s, Sumas slipped into “small town life” with a population under 800 for the next 60 years. Now with an influx of new houses and families to call it home, Sumas has just over 1,500 residents. It continues to be a safe and friendly border town that families enjoy! To learn more about the history of Sumas and to get a glimpse of the past through photos and artifacts, please visit the Sumas Historical Society and Museum at 114 2nd Street in Sumas.
