EVERSON — After 40 years in business, it’s time for Jim’s Automotive Experts at a Main Street crossroads to
change hands. It won’t be a huge change, however, as owner Jim Tjoelker’s son and longtime employee Kent Tjoelker has been intending to fully take over the business from his dad for quite a while. Kent Tjoelker started working in the shop unofficially when he was just a kid, cleaning it after school. His official start date was 20 years ago, when he turned 18. “Of course, he started out as a technician working on the
cars and then when we saw him wanting to possibly be in the front office and work with the customers, that’s when we started talking about him taking over the business,” Jim Tjoelker said. They approached lawyer Keith Bode and started drawing up a succession plan, which had Kent taking over 5% of the business per year for 10 years and then taking over the other 50% with a contract. “I was very excited,” Jim Tjoelker
said. “I had been in the business for 30 years already and I was very excited for him to be able to take the business over.” Jim Tjoelker started out in 1981 at a GMC and Subaru dealership in Lynden. He and his brother, Dave Tjoelker, then started up the shop in Everson. Dave was still in tech school at the time, and when he was finished the brothers worked together for 25 years as Jim & Dave’s Repair. They hired Charlie Rossi after about
five years, and he’s still there, helping run the business. From the mid-90s on, it was Jim and Charlie up in the front office, and they eventually brought on a third person to help as well. Jim Tjoelker would buy out his brother in the mid-2000s, and Jim’s Automotive Experts lives on with the slight name change. The retiree says he has seen cars become more and more complicated over the years, Continued on next page
Who’s Who 2021 and that’s part of what has made him ready to pass the business on to son Kent. “It was 40 years and as far as the cars have advanced, I’m losing a lot of touch with all these new cars and all the new stuff (compared to) what I grew up from,” Jim said. That makes him all the more excited to see Kent take hold of what’s new and be able to answer all the questions customers have and basically get fully involved with the changing trade, he said. For him, the best part has been working with customers, Jim Tjoelker said. “Connecting with customers and helping them with their car needs has always been my joy,” he said. “To help them with their car problems. I guess God gave me the gift to

(Brent Lindquist/Lynden Tribune) help that come about and I’ve appreciated all the good employees in the shop doing that work even though I don’t get to do it physically anymore.” Jim Tjoelker said he has always had a special passion for rebuilding Chevrolet trucks, specifically 1969-72 models, and has rebuilt about a dozen so far. Once he retires from Jim’s Au-
tomotive Experts, he’ll continue that hobby. “I’ve got more old trucks to restore,” he said. Kent Tjoelker said he too loves interacting with and helping customers, and he’s looking forward to the next stage of the business. “It’s good,” Kent Tjoelker said. “We’re ready to move on to the next stage and we’re ex-
cited about it. I don’t see any great changes other than obviously we’ll be missing a piece of the puzzle for a little bit.” Jim marked his exact 40th-anniversary date recently and the transition to Kent will occur during 2021. Nita Heathers Smith returns to her roots to lead United Way here WHATCOM — Nita Heathers Smith is back to her roots as the new president and CEO of United Way of Whatcom County. She was announced in recent online posting by the support services funding organization. Born and raised in Whatcom County, Nita graduated from Bellingham High School and Western Washington University before beginning her work in the nonprofit sector. Her career has taken her to bustling cities and rural towns around the country. Having spent over 30 years in leadership roles with Boys & Girls Clubs, Nita is passionate about making a positive difference for kids,

ny Florida beach views to return to her family and her roots here, and although she did not own a winter coat before she says “this will change quickly!” Nita was the first recipient of the Frank Geri Memorial Scholarship, allowing her to attend college, a privilege for which she continues to be grateful. She has since dedicated her career to providing hope and opportunities for others. A cancer survivor, she knows what it’s like to face adversity and how even the smallest gifts can make a big difference. A self-described “people person,” Nita looks forward to meeting and talking with as many people as possible once it’s safe to do so.
Some fun facts about Nita: • She’s the youngest of six siblings. • She’s a rabid Seattle Seahawks fan. • She was the first teenager to be appointed to the Bellingham Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee, and through that was involved in the development of Arne Hanna Aquatic Center and Boulevard Park. Related to United Way’s mission: Affordable child care is critical for working parents, but it is not always available or affordable. Two new artists at Jansen Art Center Ron Pattern, Lisa McShane exhibit through May 28 LYNDEN — The Jansen Art Center has reopened to three days per week, Thursdays through Saturdays, from noon to 4:30 p.m. And two new artists are being exhibited. • Ron Pattern, who recently retired from a long career in commercial art, primarily in the sign manufacturing industry, has shown his fine art for many years. “This is my first exhibition at Jansen,” Pattern said. “I now spend most days in my studio/ gallery in the Morgan Block Artist co-op in Fairhaven.” With fewer local art venues, Pattern primarily shows at his gallery and has had success with online exhibits and sales through his website. Peace-
Health in Bellingham has had his work featured in past exhibits before purchasing two acrylic on canvas paintings for its permanent collection. “Winter Light” measures 48 by 48 inches and “Sunlit Spruce” 30 by 40 inches. “My recent work is environmentally inspired, mostly to do with the temperate rainforest we inhabit. I also do commissioned paintings and portraits. This particular show I have been working on for the past year or more and have managed to keep with the theme, which can be challenging sometimes since I am interested in painting everything.” “I am fascinated by the world around me and challenged by capturing light and shadow, texture and expression, mood and drama.” • “A Decade of Landscapes” by Lisa McShane runs
through May 28. Light is the main element in McShane’s paintings. “I use layers of oil paint, wax, and resin, usually over linen, to create deeply luminous paintings of light and the way it falls on land and water. I want my work to breathe and to convey the beauty of our world, though I don’t paint an untouched landscape. My work includes our impacts: wildfire smoke, a road, the reflection of refinery lights, contrails.” She says her work is increasingly abstracted. “I find I have less to say about specific places, and more to convey about the embrace of light on landscapes, whether I’m looking down at a reflection on a river or at a wide horizon line. My images often start with a photo, then are abstracted through rough sketches, then drawings, and finally, the layers of the painting.”
One of McShane’s paintings was on exhibit in the American Embassy in Yemen and another is in the collection of the Washington State Governor’s Mansion in Olympia. Her studio is on Samish Island, where she shares 15 acres of forest with heron, bald eagles, owls and deer.

Yoga coming to Lynden

LYNDEN — Yoga is coming to town. Business partners Kyle Kloostra and Claire Stetina Zurbrugg are in the process of taking over a 3,500-square-foot retail space on Front Street in downtown Lynden and creating a wellness community hub of yoga and retail, including space
for individual yoga practitioners to rent. Right now they are finalizing plans and signing contracts. They anticipate a summer 2021 opening; look for further announcements ahead, including the exact location. So far, plans include space for two studios (one heated for hot yoga), childcare for students, and retail boutique space for local artisans and yoga attire and supplies. Stetina Zurbrugg is also looking for local art to feature on a rotating basis every few months. The Lynden Yoga Collective will be a sister location of the Bellingham Yoga Collective, and use a similar model. Yoga occupies the entire third floor of
the renovated historic Granary Building on Bellingham’s waterfront. Kloostra, who grew up in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, was most recently the senior pastor for five years at Sonlight Community church in Lynden. He has been a yoga student for years and met Stetina Zurbrugg at the Bellingham Yoga Collective about 10 months ago. Now, rather than having to drive into Bellingham, an array of classes will be available in the north county. Kloostra said he has found this form of exercise to also benefit him in recovering from trauma. Stetina Zurbrugg has studied yoga for 11 years and taught
for eight years extensively both locally and in San Francisco. She runs a yoga school to train new practitioners and would like to find additional yoga teachers. When asked about the benefits of yoga, she replied, “I could write books. Yoga is a practice that is ancient. It is relevant today ... being present and mindful.” “It’s a system of tools and self-care,” she said, noting yoga’s physical and mental benefits including its use of breath work. “It’s for everyone.” The pair agree that they want to create a space to “be of service to Lynden and the community” since Lynden doesn’t have yoga yet. These will detail what will be offered in terms of specials and current classes. Stetina Zurbrugg also encourages people to share progress and support each other on social media. A survey is also planned for online. “We want to build community,” they agreed. Kloostra added, “People are coming out of COVID and want to connect ... many are stressed.” According to the website for Bellingham Yoga Collective, it specializes in Vinyasa-style flows, thought-leading Hatha alignment, as well as Yin and restorative classes. LYNDEN — This is hardly the time to have a big community celebration event, so even though 2021 is a big milestone year for Lynden-born Peoples Bank the celebrating is being held off a bit.
Maybe if summer parades are held, Peoples can be the grand marshal. For now, just know that the bank is aware of its birthday and is doing some lowkey promoting, but more is like to come later, said marketing director Hollie Brown. In a generous spirit, Peoples is the studio sponsor for KAFE Radio 104.1 this year, which means giving away items from local businesses on air to celebrate the anniversary, Brown said. Recent giveaways have included Caffe Adagio and Pure Bliss Desserts. And something has be-
gun to take shape as a more permanent tribute to the history of Peoples in Lynden: a new stage backdrop at the Lynden Pioneer Museum. It fits right in with the whole mock-up of old businesses of early Lynden, the surrounding scene on the east main floor of the museum. The former full name of the bank is ensconced in metal and brick at the downtown Lynden main branch. Continued from page 16
cashier.” For orientation, that is all in the 400 block of Front Street, and the Dyk Building still bears its name prominently. Eventually, the bank’s home became the building in the 500 block of Front Street where Vibrant USA is located today. And then by the late 1960s Peoples State Bank was expanding and spreading out to a new main building on Fifth Street north of Grover, the Lynden Financial Center of today. The name is now simply Peoples Bank. As a point of note, of nearly 3,500 incorporations filed in Washington state in 1920, only 35 remain today and Peoples is one of them. This is the bank’s story as recapped online: It was in the summer of 1920 that 56 Lynden citizens met at the Odd Fellows Hall and decided they needed a change. At the time, there was only one bank in town. To create healthy competition and expand financing options for the local community, these citizens sought a charter for a new bank,
which the state approved on Dec. 9, 1920. The new bank was open for business soon after. In 1938 Irwin LeCocq purchased a controlling interest in the bank and became president. He insisted that it would operate on core values of honesty, respect and fiscal conservatism. As World War II ended, the bank was on solid footing with $2 million in assets. Irwin LeCocq Jr. joined the bank in 1952, became president in 1969, and oversaw $13 million in assets and three branches. His son, Charles LeCocq, took the lead role in 1987 and served in that capacity through early 2013 when he became chairman of the board and continues as CEO. The bank now has 23 branches and more than $2.4 billion in assets. “Today, we are known as Peoples Bank with branches in many Washington communities. Our growth is predicated on the same values that we started with over 100 years ago: be responsible and dedicated to our clients and serve our local communities beyond the business of banking — as a community bank should.”

LYNDEN — Lenny’s Bike Shop is a Ferndale institution, but it’s known throughout the county as the place to go for bike repairs. Prior to opening the Ferndale shop, Loren “Lenny” McWilliams fixed bikes out of his garage on a donation basis. There was a need for bikes and bike repairs in Ferndale, so he opened Lenny’s Bike Shop. “I grew up in Bellingham, so I started riding bikes at a young age and I always worked on my own bikes,” Loren said. “I went to Bellingham Technical College for diesel mechanics and I always loved wrenching on stuff, but I also had passion for working on bikes. It has always been my passion for fixing bikes and getting people back out and enjoying riding bikes.” Co-owner Erica McWilliams said the Ferndale shop opened up in 2014, and the Lynden clientele has always supported it, despite the drive. “About 60 percent of our customers already came from

Lynden Liquor moves, but not far New location is just across Front Street from former one By Brent Lindquist brent@lyndentribune.com
LYNDEN — When Lynden Liquor co-owner Evan Samsill was doing odd jobs around the liquor store after moving to Washington in 2011, he had no idea he would own the place someday. “I worked for the store back when it was contract liquor stores and state stores,” Samsill said. “I was working part-time for Pat Fleming, who was the owner. I ran it for her for a bit and then right around 2013 or ‘14, she was getting ready to retire, was ready to get out of it and move out to the bay. We spent a while figuring out financing and everything else.” During this time helping at the liquor store, Samsill fell in love with the work. Along with partners Jennifer Marion and Jeremy Lott, Samsill took over the Front Street liquor store next to the Lynden Post Office starting in May 2015. Evan Samsill is one of the three partners in business at the new location of Lynden Liquor, just across Front Street from the shop’s longtime spot. (Brent Lindquist) Then plans arose for three stories of apartments to be added on top of the liquor store building. That had impacts. When construction work actually began in 2019, the liquor partners were approached by the company that now owned the building. “They’re really, really awesome dudes,” Samsill said. “With the construction going on, it presented difficulties.” Since any remodel that might happen to their firstfloor space was a ways out,
if they moved it would open up the space for construction crews to use. “It would allow them to use that space and (they would) put me in a fresh space,” Samsill said. “Everything worked out really well. It’s not often when you have a business move and stuff like that that everybody’s amicable.” It turned out to be directly across Front Street, into the front space of Dutch Village Mall. The shop is in the process
of stocking up and getting all inventory in place. “We trimmed it down a lot just to make the move easier,” Samsill said. “Now it’s time to start bringing stuff back again. Not that we had an extremely long move.” The store is also in the process of acquiring artwork for the new walls, which will have a very local flair, Samsill said, as well as getting everything in shipshape following the move.
