Clermont was a black middle income township during the apartheid days surrounded by Westville, Kloof, New Germany and Inanda in the distance. The main road is called Clermont Road and was named after Sir Clermont, a farmer in the area who sold his land. It was the only place in Durban where black people were able to buy property and build houses.

WHAT’S ON…CLERMONT ENTERTAINMENT

ATTRACTIONS Serving as a sanctuary for political activists during the apartheid era, the CATHOLIC CHURCH was built in 1938 after the Lutherans had invited the Roman Catholics to start a Mission in Clermont.

Clermont is a hub for arts and culture, and is home to the Grammy award winning ISICATHAMIYA group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, as well as other successful artists such as the Clermont Choir, Msawawa, and many more. Contact 031 711 2326 for further information. With good food, good music and an A-list clientele, the COMFORT ZONE (061 156 6068) is a popular and upmarket jazz lounge which maintains a smart dress code. Offering a true township experience, TATE’S KASI GRILL (82 833 1810) is a butchery where friends can enjoy some delicious SHISANYAMA (grilled meat) while dancing to the sounds of popular local DJs and artists. ART & CULTURE Artist THAMI JALI (076 790 5622) has turned his home into an art studio where he teaches young people fine art, pottery, sculpture and more, while allowing other artists to use his house as a platform from which to display their work.

Founded in 1858, the Lutheran Mission Station of CHRISTIANANBURG is one of the oldest places of worship in Clermont. Every year, some 3 million people gather on pilgrimage at St John’s Apostolic Church – also known as KWAMASANGO. Clermont is also the birthplace of the SHEMBE RELIGION, being the site of Isiah Shembe’s residence and temple before he moved to the Inanda Area. The HINDU TEMPLE bears witness to former residents of Clermont – Indian farmers who sold their produce at local markets here and further afield.
