UMHLANGA

Visitors from around the world flock to the holiday resort town of Umhlanga to relax and have fun on one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. Situated on the east coast of South Africa, just north of the vibrant port city of Durban on the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, Umhlanga has some of the best South African accommodation. Facilities include luxury hotels, lodges, B&Bs and superb holiday apartments. Umhlanga also has up-market office parks and first world shopping centres. The golden sandy beaches, stretch northwards for more than 200 kilometres, all the way to the spectacular iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a World Heritage Site. Inland from Umhlanga, endless fields of sugar cane give way to the tumbling area of the 1000 Hills and massive Inanda Dam. Umhlanga offers excellent up-market shops, restaurants, nature trails, South African tour operators and a wealth of entertainment all in a secure environment. The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board (KZNSB) is the only organisation of its kind in the world mandated to do bather protection. The organisation also conducts biological research and monitoring, educates the public about its activities, and promotes both beach and marine tourism along the province’s coastline. An Audiovisual presentation and shark dissection brings science to members of the public in an informal setting, using edutainment to provide an exciting learning experience for its audience. The KZNSB constantly seeks a balance between the protection of bathers whilst minimising the impact on the marine environment. The organisation embarked upon a net reduction programme some years ago and total coverage of shark safety gear (nets and/or a combination and drumlines) has gradually dropped from 44km to 23km of the coastline, without adversely compromising bather safety at popular protected beaches from Richards Bay to Port Edward. Launching their boats at dawn, highly trained and experienced teams negotiate a sometimes volatile surf zone to reach their installations and

begin the task of checking the shark safety gear for entangled marine life, ensuring all is in order before the arrival of beach users. Members of the public are given an opportunity to view servicing of the shark safety gear by participating in the Board’s two hour early morning boat trips. The Tour boat leaves Wilson’s Wharf at 06h30. SAFE SWIMMING DO’S AND DON’T’S Always Swim at protected beaches • Always wear bright coloured swim wear • Always obey life guards • Always swim with a crowd/group within the demarcated area.
