For more information visit www.drakensberg.kzn.org.za The Drakensberg Mountains are part of the 243 000 hectare uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, which was added to the World Heritage Site list in 2000.The Zulu name, uKhahlamba, meaning ‘barrier of spears’, aptly describes this awe inspiring region. Registered tourist guides will help you find examples of the ancient Bushman rock art of the San people who lived in the area thousands of years ago. These paintings are one of the Drakensberg’s greatest cultural treasures, with some 20 000 individual rock paintings having been recorded at different caves and overhang sites. This area of seasonally snow-capped peaks is divided into three regions, southern, central and northern Drakensberg, and is a mecca for outdoor activities and the adventurous. The Northern Drakensberg is home to the spectacular Amphitheatre and the source of the uThukela River. This river plunges 948 metres over the edge of the Montaux-Sources Plateau as the uThukela Falls, the second highest waterfall in the world. Feel the adrenalin rush provided by sheer rock or ice climbing, abseiling, canopy tours, white water rafting, helicopter rides and 4x4 excursions up Sani Pass - the highest pass-road in South Africa. Or experience the awesome Drakensberg on horseback, from hour-long rides to a three-day expedition into Lesotho. Hiking or leisurely walks along the many routes on both the lower and upper slopes of the Drakensberg will yield sightings of up to 290 species of birds, 48 species of mammals and rare varieties of plant life found in the park. Or simply relax on the verandahs of one of the many welcoming accommodation facilities in the region, cocktail in hand, as you soak up the magnificent views of the mountains. The Mnweni Cultural Centre offers visitors a glimpse of local culture, hand crafted goods and medicinal plants. Visitors will be spoilt for choice when it comes to accommodation, with the selection ranging from luxury lodges and boutique hotels, to picturesque guesthouses and rustic self-catering chalets, all with the magnificent mountains as their backdrop. The more adventurous might even enjoy going with a trained guide for a night in a nearby cave. 31

Its convenient location provides easy access to King Shaka International Airport, Durban, and the game reserves of Zululand and the Elephant Coast. A fascinating cultural mix exists in this region that was once part of the great Zulu empire built by King Shaka, followed by subsequent waves of adventurers, colonialists, the French Mauritian sugar cane growers and indentured Indian labourers. For culture and history, visit sites such as the Ultimatum Tree, Ndondakusuka or Fort Pearson, or the burial place of the Zulu King, Shaka, at Kwa-Dukuza and Nobel laureate, Albert Luthuli, at Groutville. Explore the curious temples, sample spicy foodstuffs or shop for fresh produce at numerous markets, or walk a ‘muti’ (African medicine) trail through the Harold Johnson Nature Reserve. Tee off at some of the finest golf courses in the Southern Hemisphere, or enjoy a bird’s-eye view of this magnificent coastline from onboard a micro-light flight. Birding is excellent in the area, including sightings of the rare Palm Nut Vulture. Other outdoor adventures include mountain biking, horse riding, hiking, surfing, fishing and snorkelling in the many tidal pools along the coast. Excellent restaurants offer fine dining, and there is plenty of partying at local nightclubs. Accommodation is plentiful, with a variety of seaside hotels and resorts, boutique hotels, timeshare resorts, self-catering apartments, cottages, B&B facilities and caravan and campsites.

For more information visit www.southcoast.kzn.org.za This idyllic and popular coastline is a haven of unique and less-explored places, and stretches south from the Umkomaas River to Port Edward. Set amidst rolling hills fringed by palm fronds and wild strelitzias, the region is characterised by sun-kissed beaches, azure lagoons and friendly seaside villages. Popularly known as the ‘Golf Coast’, this scenic region has 10 courses situated in close proximity to or even at the beach. Ocean activities, however, remain the main attraction, with most of the local beaches enjoying international ‘Blue Flag’ status. Excellent deep-sea diving areas at Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks offer the opportunity of open water diving and shark cage diving. Every winter, there is the phenomenon of the Sardine Run - when millions of sardines migrate up the coast, accompanied by dolphins, other large predators and thousands of sea birds which feed on them. Depending on the temperature of the ocean and a few other factors, shoals of sardines have even come onto the beaches, to be scooped up by eager beach goers in every possible container. Andrenaline junkies can jump off Oribi Gorge with the highest swing in the world, abseil down the Gorge or go white water rafting on the Umzimkulu river. Somewhat less scary but equally fascinating is a visit the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve, which conserves plants found nowhere else in the world, or go birding - 400 bird species have been spotted along this coastline. Shops and farm-stalls along the road offer a feast of locally produced wares such as nuts, freshly ground coffee, fruit, candles and a wide variety of handmade crafts. Accommodation on the South Coast is affordable, and ranges from up-market hotels, resort style hotels, boutique hotels, luxury B&Bs and guest houses, to self-catering apartments, chalets, caravan and camping facilities. 50
