The VODACOM DURBAN JULY, which has become the biggest race horsing event in the country, attracting over 40 000 visitors for the weekend and adding a whopping R300 million into the economy of the province. This year, we also welcomed a few special guests from across the African continent, which included 35 travel agents, tour operators and media from Zambia, DRC, Namibia and Botswana. This initiative is a collaboration with various tourism trade partners to grow this prestigious event into a truly Pan African event. Africa is already one of our biggest key source markets and we want to bring even more numbers from the continent and events such as these are big drawcards for the region. We also collaborated with South African Tourism to bring influencers, bloggers and celebrities from West Africa to shine the spotlight on KZN’s tourism attractions. With a combined audience of over 5 million social media followers, the hosted guests shared some of their tourism experiences in KZN with their followers giving them a taste of what the province has to offer. Again, this year, we continued our partnership with the ECR HOUSE AND GARDEN SHOW that attracts over 50 000 visitors through their gates in ten days. We ran a Virtual Reality activation that gave visitors a chance to sample some of the provinces key tourism attractions such as adventure, culture and beach. This will also be rolled out in a number of tourism exhibition across the country. As part of our transformation initiatives, in September this year, we will be taking a total 20 young women from the rural areas of this province to participate in practical training in hospitality management for a period of 2 years in United Arab Emirates as a collaboration between us, as TKZN and EVOLVING WOMEN PROGRAMME based in Dubai. On completion of the programme and on return to the country, these young women will be placed on employment opportunities with

various institutions and companies in the hospitality sector. September is also TOURISM MONTH, we are happy to announce that KwaZulu-Natal will be hosting the official South African celebrations together with the Department of Tourism, South African Tourism, the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs and Umgungundlovu District Municipality. This year’s Tourism Month theme “‘TOURISM AND JOBS: A BETTER FUTURE FOR ALL’ will highlight the importance of tourism, its social, cultural, political and economic value. Furthermore, we will be closely with South African Tourism as well as our trade partners to put together value for money deals to inspire the people of KwaZulu-Natal to travel this exceptional province. We will also be taking members of the media around the province to showcase many of our tourism gems in order to encourage more tourists to choose KZN as their number one travel destination of choice. As families and travel enthusiasts begin to narrow down their travel options for the upcoming Festive Season, we will be amplifying our domestic tourism campaign across a variety of media platforms. Potential travelers will be able to book their next holiday to the Zulu Kingdom in a click of a button. OUR TRAVEL APP continues to be a valuable tool for our consumers to search for the best accommodation, tourism attractions, restaurants and events when they are on holiday in the province. For more tourism related information, consumers are welcomed to visit our Information Offices at Ushaka Marine World, King Shaka International Airport and Long Street in Cape Town. NO DOUBT, THE BEST WAY TO VIEW WHALES AND DOLPHINS UP CLOSE IS FROM A BOAT THE ISLE OF CAPRI CRUISES offers an exhilarating 2 hour cruise into the ocean on their boat “Bafana”, to view one of the world’s most magnificent mammals, the Humpback Whale! The trip takes you into the Indian Ocean and close to the Mozambican current to encounter them at close range. All trips have friendly and fully qualified whale tour guides on board, to share their vast knowledge of the ocean and its creatures with you. Every year, from June to November, whales can frequently be seen off the KwaZulu-Natal coast on their migratory route, from the Southern Oceans to the warmer tropical waters for mating and giving birth, and on their return, heading for the nutrient rich waters of Antarctica. By law, you are not allowed to approach within 300m from a whale, unless you are aboard a boat permitted by the Department of Marine and Coastal Management. Permit holders are all members of the South African Boat-Based Whale Watching Association and as such are required to adhere to a strict code of conduct and to undergo training. The Isle of Capri Cruises boasts one of two whale watching permits awarded in Durban.

We also offer: • Hourly Harbour Cruises from 10am - 4pm (conditions apply) • Sea Cruises at 12.30pm and 2.30pm • Educational School Trips • Boat Rides • Party Cruises • Fishing

Zulu Kingdom. Exceptional

TKZN #DoKZN Heritage

KwaZulu-Natal comprises everything from beach, bush and battlefields, rolling hills and lofty mountains to cultural diversity, traditions and intriguing legends… It has a history dating back thousands of years to when the San left their symbolic paintings on the walls of caves in the Drakensberg, to the African tribes that made their way south and settled in this rich verdant land. To when British settlers landed in a bay, that would eventually be called Durban, to when the hardy Voortrekkers made their way over the Drakensberg and when indentured Indian workers arrived to work in the sugar cane plantations. To the decades of war between Brit and Boer, Brit and Zulu and later the years of struggle that laid the foundation to South Africa’s hard-won democracy.

And to recent years when those born into freedom leave their mark in all aspects of society. But, as anyone who has visited KZN will know, this is a destination that is SO more than the sum of its parts. And nowhere is this more evident than in the sophisticated cosmopolitan city of DURBAN, where this melting pot of cultural diversity is most evident. Sample the unique vibrancy of township life, the finest curries outside India and a cultural vibe like no other.

Dig deeper into the history of the region with a visit to Inanda, for a glimpse into the lives of icons like MAHATMA GANDHI, a symbol of peace the world over, at his Phoenix Settlement north of Durban; DR JOHN LANGALIBALELE DUBE, the founding president of the African National Congress (in 1912), and whose gravesite is at the Ohlange Institute in Inanda. NELSON MANDELA cast his historic vote in South Africa’s first democratic elections here. In uMlazi, two statues pay tribute to GRIFFITHS AND VICTORIA MXENGE, two anti-apartheid activists who died for the struggle – their home now being transformed into a museum. Or visit the Kunene Museum in Glenwood, home of PROFESSOR MAZISI KUNENE, freedom fighter, literary icon and poet. Head up the NORTH COAST, home to beautiful beaches, coastal villages and towns and rolling hills of green – the regions sugar cane fields. A fascinating cultural mix exists in this region that was once part of the great Zulu empire built by KING SHAKA. This was created by the subsequent wave of adventurers moving into the area, from the arrival of colonialists and French Mauritian sugar cane growers to the indentured Indian labourers. Tongaat, home to the oldest Indian community in South Africa, is where the first indentured Indian labourers settled in 1860 to work in the sugar plantations. Kwa-Dukuza (formerly Stanger) is home to the burial place of Shaka, the great Zulu King, and the Luthuli Museum, a must see for all visitors to get a deeper understanding in South Africa’s road to democracy. Here one gets to understand the values, legacy and philosophies of CHIEF ALBERT LUTHULI – the first African to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his non-violent stance in the fight for liberation.

Head north and you cross the mighty Thukela River into ZULULAND, where the Zululand coast’s golden shores are gently caressed by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, offering idyllic beaches and crystal-clear waters. The fascinating culture and history of the Zulu people, rich in tradition and symbolism, is visibly evident in this captivating region. From the growth and development of one of the great nations of Africa, the AmaZulu, with a long legacy of royal kings to one of its greatest challenges - the supremacy of the British Empire during the tragic but heroic days of the Anglo-Zulu War. Experience Zulu royalty with a tour of ROYAL PALACE and it’s homesteads in Nongoma, or a visit to the annual REED DANCE. Every year in September, thousands of Zulu maidens gather at KING GOODWILL ZWELUTHINI’S royal palace for the Zulu Reed Dance. The Reed Dance is a colourful and cultural celebration that promotes respect for young women and preserves the custom of keeping girls as virgins until marriage. In the far north of the province is the ELEPHANT COAST, so named for the huge herds of elephant that once roamed free before being hunted out. Visitors can once again see these magnificent animals in the ISIMANGALISO WETLAND PARK – South Africa’s first World Heritage Site. The name ‘isimangaliso’ is said to be derived from the story of KING SHAKA – when he was assassinated in 1828, his most trusted servant, JEQE, fearing a similar fate fled from Zululand and discovered the land of the Tsonga people. A beautiful place that caused him to exclaim, ‘isimangaliso’ meaning ‘a miracle’ or something wonderous’ in Zulu.

This region is rich in stories of history and culture… one such story being that of the legendary GHOST MOUNTAIN, where over the years flickering fires and strange lights have been seen. From early times the bodies of Shangaan Chiefs had been buried there, and still are… ‘It is a great and strange mountain’ wrote Sir Ryder Haggard, ‘it is haunted also and named the Ghost Mountain, and on top of it is a grey peak rudely shaped like the head of an old woman’.

To find out more about the exceptional experiences you can enjoy in KZN, go to www.zulu.org.za 10 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Aug-Sept 2019

The BATTLEFIELDS region, with more recorded battlefields than anywhere else in Africa, is where visitors can ‘walk’ in the footsteps of SHAKA, WINSTON CHURCHILL, MAHATMA GANDHI AND GENERAL LOUIS BOTHA – all famous for the part they played in the history of the KwaZulu-Natal. Knowledgeable, friendly and accredited local guides are available and guarantee hour upon hour of captivating company. Listen in awe as they paint a vivid picture in the theatre of the mind with stories of the BATTLES OF ISANDLWANA, RORKE’S DRIFT AND BLOOD RIVER amongst others. The BATTLE OF ISANDLWANA is a significant one, where a 25,000-strong Zulu Impi defeated British forces camped at the base of the Isandlwana hill making this battle the single biggest defeat of the British in Africa during Queen Victoria’s reign. Today cairns mark the graves of the fallen British soldiers and an impressive bronze memorial commemorates the fallen Zulu warriors.

Seek out the various mission stations of the TRAPPIST MONKS and walk through the stunning landscapes of ALAN PATON’S ‘CRY THE BELOVED COUNTRY’, or take a ride on the PATON EXPRESS, a vintage steam train that travels from Ncala siding near Ixopo and experience the Africa that Paton so loved. The KZN MIDLANDS with its gentle demeanour, green pastures and abundant forests belies its history of clandestine operations and significant events – none more so that the capture of NELSON MANDELA on a roadside near Howick. This spot is now commemorated with an impressive steel structure and a museum. The EDENDALE AND IMBALI HERITAGE AND FREEDOM ROUTE provides the history of the struggle of Blacks against the City Colonial powers since 1851. The route is part of KZN FREEDOM ROUTE incorporating NELSON MANDELA, MAHATMA GANDHI, ALAN PATON, JOHN DUBE AND CHIEF ALBERT LUTHULI. It also captures MANDELA’S appearance and speech in the All in Africa Conference at Manaye Hall in 1961 and the political struggles of the 1980s.

The UKHAHLAMBA DRAKENSBERG Mountain range is KwaZulu-Natal’s other World Heritage Site. The Zulu name, uKhahlamba, meaning ‘barrier of spears’ and the Afrikaans name Drakensberge, meaning ‘dragon mountains’, aptly describes this awe-inspiring region. A highlight of any visit to the Drakensberg is seeking out ancient BUSHMAN ROCK ART, evidence of the San people who lived in the area long time ago. These paintings are one of the Drakensberg’s greatest cultural treasures, with some 30,000 individual rock paintings having been recorded at 500 different cave and overhang sites between ROYAL NATIONAL PARK in the north and BUSHMAN’S NEK in the south.

KwaZulu-Natal, the place to be… the place to #DoKZNHeritage

Head south and you’re in KZN’s SOUTH COAST region, a region of lush coastal forests, rocky bays and endless beaches. But it has wonderful opportunities to experience local Zulu culture by visiting local communities and experiencing day-to-day life. Another cultural experience is the annual UMGUBHO WEZINTOMBI, or the Maidens Ceremony as it’s popularly known, where girls participate in the traditional dance of the maidens to celebrate their purity and to be chosen for possible inclusion in the famous REED DANCE.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

DURBAN Visitors to Durban get to experience the sights and sounds of this typically African city, a city that abounds with cultural diversity and multi-cultural traditions. From its divided past to its democratic present, Durban offers several opportunities for visitors to walk in the shoes of those who impacted our present through their selfless struggle – learn from the past and embrace the present. Take a fascinating journey through the past as you visit museums, homes and hideouts of the regions many anti-apartheid activists by following the KwaZulu-Natal Freedom Route, which spans the cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg. Visit the KwaMuhle Museum and view Durban through the eyes of African’s who lived and worked here from 1928 to the late 1980s – learn more about labour regulations, separate housing and the subsequent protest action. Or venture into Cato Manor, an informal settlement on the outskirts of the city, and visit the Cato Manor Heritage Centre. Large black and white photographic prints vividly depict the stark realities of evictions, rebellion, riots and suppression. Be sure to visit the Ohlange Institute in Inanda, that was founded by John Langalibalele Dube in 1901. He was a teacher, publisher, editor, novelist, poet and politician, and founded the Inanda Seminary Institute for Girls because he wanted them to have a Western education but not lose their African roots. He also wanted black people to go into business and in 1903 founded Ilanga, an isiZulu newspaper. A man of vision, who as founding President of the ANC, sowed the seeds of the democracy we appreciate today. Durban’s past is also revealed in its architecture, with a profusion of Colonial, Cape Dutch, Indian and even Oriental styles. From the neobaroque City Hall, the Tudor-styled Playhouse, the neo-Gothic style of the Emmanuel Cathedral and the many Victorian and Georgian styled buildings in popular Florida Road. As well as the Juma Musjin Mosque with its gilt-domed minarets and marbled worship hall. This mosque, also known

DID YOU KNOW? as the Grey Street Mosque, is the largest in the Southern hemisphere. In Chatsworth there is the Temple of Understanding, the largest Hare Krishna Temple in Africa whose architecture was inspired by the lotus flower. But the best way to feel the rhythm and vibe of the City and to experience it’s history and culture is get to know the people – have a bunny-chow or traditional Durban curry at one of the many curry restaurants in Durban, feel the vibe at a local township tavern while shisanyama (barbequed meat) sizzles on the open fire or dine in style with perfectly plated fusion cuisine at a local restaurant. Put your dancing shoes on and move to the sound of local jazz at The Chairman – appreciate the wall of album covers behind the bar, symbolic of the way messages were passed during the Apartheid era. And experience the rhythm and soul of Africa at the Bat Centre, Durban’s multi-purpose centre for the performing arts. The colourful buildings with their murals, mosaics and artwork are home to artists-in-residence, galleries and performances of music, poetry and the spoken word… check out their Facebook page for details of upcoming events

WELCOME TO

Umhlanga Our theme this issue is ‘Heritage’, and we note that Umhlanga was initially inhabited by the San people, as there was a generous supply of fresh water flowing through the adjacent forests into the Umhlanga lagoon. In later years, it was inhabited by the Zulu people who lived off the abundance of fish in the sea and wild game in the area. In 1869, the first beach cottage in Umhlanga, the Oyster Lodge, was built and approximately 80 years later in 1947, it was replaced by Umhlanga’s most prominent hotel, the Oyster Box. Umhlanga Rocks became a village in 1931 and the famous red and white lighthouse was constructed in 1954 to warn ships about the dangers of the rocks along the coastal areas of Umhlanga. There are large numbers of marine, wildlife and bird species in Umhlanga and these can be found in the local nature reserves, lagoon, sea and forests. Guided walks for visitors and tourists provide access to these nature reserves and over the years, Umhlanga is still developing and has become the most sought after holiday and business destination in South Africa. It boasts some of the most exclusive hotels, self-catering apartments, sophisticated guesthouses and a world-class beachfront promenade that spans the entire length of this resort paradise. Fine dining, beautiful shopping malls and many fabulous suburbs are all part of the Umhlanga scene. We extend a warm welcome to travellers who visit this wonderful region, and invite them to unwind and enjoy the paradise known simply as ‘Umhlanga’.

The KWAZULU-NATAL SHARKS BOARD has been protecting popular KZN beaches from shark incidents for over 40 years. KZNSB boats launch each morning to patrol the coast and clear the shark safety gear of any catches. An audio-visual presentation, followed by a fascinating shark dissection on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 09:00 and 14:00. Sunday afternoon dissections take place at 14:00. +27 (0) 31 566 0400

PIETERMARITZBURG

MIDLANDS

Despite the chilly evenings, the days are getting warmer and there is a definite hint of spring in the air. It’s a great time of year to get out and explore the hidden gems to be found within these rolling hills and quaint country lanes – everything from a fascinating mix of arts and crafts, artisanal produce, sublime spas and world-class restaurants. Experience the history and culture of the region or get out and get active with an adventurous pursuit. Pietermaritzburg, the province’s capital city has been visited by the likes of Gandhi, Mandela and Queen Victoria – it’s a contemporary African city that speaks of Zulu, Boer, British and Indian influences. Take some time to explore the region’s rich heritage on a walk through the city’s historical centre and enjoy the architecture and history of the town. One of the highlights of the town is the City Hall, built in 1893. Journey along the Freedom Route, initiated in 2007 to promote freedom related struggles – start at the Old Prison, which dates back to Voortrekker times. It has more than 150 years of history from colonialism and apartheid, to the liberation struggle and the dawn of South Africa’s democracy – and now home to Project Gateway a community development initiative. The site was commissioned in 1862, with the Monument Block being the first structure built on the site. Other buildings, which were constructed later, include the gallows, ‘whites only’ section and hospital.

DID YOU KNOW? were held in this prison during the struggles in South Africa, including Nelson Mandela and Gandhi. Other Freedom Route sites include the Pietermaritzburg Station, the Gandhi Statue and the Nelson Mandela Capture Site, amongst others. The Nelson Mandela Capture Site commemorates the day, 5 August 1962, when Nelson Mandela was arrested outside Howick. He had been travelling disguised as the chauffer of the car he was driving when he was apprehended by the Apartheid police, who had been searching for him for 17-odd months. This was a significant day in South Africa’s history as during his incarceration, Nelson Mandela made great strides in bringing the inequalities and unfair treatment of the Apartheid era to the consciousness of South Africans and the world. In addition to being South Africa’s first democratically elected President, Nelson Mandela is acclaimed for his efforts to establish racial, social and political equality in a country that had been ravaged by the Apartheid.

The suffering of many people from the late 1860s through to the late 1980s is depicted in The Old Prison buildings – the National Monument building, and the isolation cells are a ‘must see’ to give an idea of the torture and horror of imprisonment. Many well-known freedom fighters

NORTH COAST The North Coast was once part of the great Zulu empire built by King Shaka, and the region’s multi-cultural heritage makes for many memorable experiences. Visit one of the historic sites in the region, such as the Luthuli Museum or the burial place of King Shaka at KwaDukuza. Enjoy the warm hospitality of the people of the region as they proudly show you their heritage. The diverse culture, fabulous cuisine and first class facilities make it easy to fall in love with this enchanting destination. The North Coast was once part of the great Zulu empire built by King Shaka, and the region’s multi-cultural heritage makes for many memorable experiences. Walk a ‘muti’ (African medicine) trail through the Harold Johnson Nature Reserve which gives insight into the medicinal plants used by the Zulu people. Look out for the Coral Tree (Erythrina caffra) it is seen as a royal tree and is a respected and admired tree in the Zulu culture and is believed to have both medicinal and magic properties. Additionally, within this small reserve is the Ultimatum Tree and Fort Pearson (also known as Ndondakusuka) as well as a few war graves. This is also the start of the King Shaka Cultural Heritage Route, in honour of the heritage that King Shaka left behind. Be sure to visit the King Shaka Gravesite and Memorial in the town of KwaDukuza – this is where you’ll find the Indaba Tree where King Shaka held council, as well as the Assassination Tree where it is said that he was assassinated in 1828 by his brothers Mhlangana and Dingaan. These trees are almost 200 years old! KwaDukuza also boasts at being the home of the first African to win the Nobel Peace Prize, Chief Albert John Mvumbi Luthuli – his home, now the Luthuli Museum, has been declared a National Monument. Set in his former home, the museum features numerous photographic records, many significant belongings and a life-sized bust of the man himself. A short drive takes you to Chief Luthuli’s Grave as well as the Church in which Chief Albert Luthuli’s body laid in state.

DID YOU KNOW? Also, in KwaDukuza is the Morewood Memorial which commemorates the life and work of Sir Edmund Morewood, who grew the first commercial cane in South Africa and was the founder of the South African sugar industry. When his first crop of sugar cane reached maturity in1851, he made the first sugar ever produced in this country, in a primitive factory which once stood where the garden now lies. The town of Tongaat is one of the largest sugar-producing districts in South Africa, and Hindu temples Vishwaroop and Juggernath Puri are testament to the Indian community having made Tongaat their home. Sample some of their culinary delights, including pineapple-on-a-stick covered with tangy spices.

UKHAHLAMBA

DRAKENSBERG The awe inspiring Drakensberg Mountains, just by virtue of topography, is an adventurer’s paradise and offers a wealth of outdoor activities to satisfy all fitness levels and age group. This 243 000 hectare mountainous region, known the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park, well deserves its international status as a World Heritage Site. It entices its visitors with massive cliffs towering over riverine bush, lush evergreen forests and cascading waterfalls and mountain streams as well as hiking paths that invite exploration. On 30 November 2000, the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park was added to the World Heritage Site list, and is described by UNESCO as having “exceptional natural beauty in its soaring basaltic buttresses, incisive dramatic cutbacks, and golden sandstone ramparts...” The Park is an important haven for many threatened and endemic species, and for its wealth of rock paintings made by the San people thousands of years ago – some even as far back as 25,000 plus years. The Bushman or San paintings are one of the Drakensberg’s greatest cultural treasures and have been recorded at 500 different cave and overhang sites between Royal National Park in the north and Bushman’s Nek in the south. When Europeans first encountered this rock art in southern Africa some 350 years ago, they considered the drawings primitive and crude, just ‘Bushman paintings’, two-dimensional accounts of hunting and fighting and daily life. Today, however, we know that for the San, rock paintings weren’t just representations of life, they were a record of the past. Subjects of the Bushman and San paintings range from animals (mainly eland) and humans, to ox-wagons and mounted men with rifles - when shamans painted an eland, they didn’t just pay respect to a sacred animal they also harnessed its essence.

It is also home to an Art Gallery featuring the works of Gerard Bhengu, an internationally renowned artist as well as a Museum of local culture and the missionary work in the area. Emmaus, in Umzimkulu, was Abbot Francis Pfanner’s last home and reflects his commitment to the faith – climb the Stations of the Cross, a steep set of stairs which he built, to the silver statue of the crucified Christ; and Reichenau Mission near Underberg – well known for its impressive murals and stained glass windows. The Sisonke Stimela (stimela is Zulu for ‘steam train’), operates at various times of the year, taking passengers on a historic journey past Trappist Missions, local communities and aloe clad hillsides that are spectacular during their flowering period in the winter months. To experience the world of Alan Paton’s ‘Cry the Beloved Country’, a steam train journey on the Paton Express will delight historians and steam train enthusiasts alike.

For history of a different kind, visit one (or all) of the Trappist Missions located in the Southern Drakensberg founded by Abbot Francis Pfanner in the late 1880s. Centocow near Creighton is the largest and is named after

SOUTH COAST Sub-tropical forests, blue lagoons, golden beaches, rocky coves, the warm Indian Ocean and sunny weather – this is what makes the South Coast such a popular holiday destination. But there’s more to the South Coast than just natural beauty and fabulous beaches – there are treasures to be found by those willing to dig a little deeper. For once, turn your back on the warm Indian Ocean, and you’ll gaze upon the lush landscapes with its farmland and villages that make up the hinterland, the more remote areas away from the coast. It is here, in the hinterland, that you will discover new and fascinating places with stories seeped in history and intriguing cultures. From formidable Shaka Zulu, to the intrepid pioneers, missionaries, mariners and soldiers, to smugglers, entrepreneurs, freedom fighters and traders… you’ll find their journeys intermingled with your own as you discover more than what lies on the surface. The best way to explore the hinterland is with a local guide that can unlock its mysteries and accompany you in what is still largely traditional land with unique customs you don’t want to unwittingly offend. Here are some hidden gems to give you a taste of what lies only a short trip away: The KwaXolo Caves, near Port Edward, take a guided walk to a recently discovered range of caves with San paintings that are more than 100 000 years old. A brand-new walkway improves access to the caves. The scenic beauty and authentic rural village in the area creates added interest. The KwaNzimakwe starts at the WowZulu Welcome Centre in KwaNzimakwe, near Port Edward. From here visitors go on a guided walk to a scenic viewing site, visit a cattle kraal, an organic garden and a sangoma, or traditional

healer. Hear stories of the area, watch crafters at work and learn to weave, drum or do a traditional dance. At the Welcome Centre, buy colourful arts and crafts. With the Nyandezulu Experience visitors start off at the Mfihlo Guest House for a guided drive or walk, with stopovers along the way. Take a short climb up the holy uMdlungwana mountain, for great views of the beautiful Nyandezulu waterfall and an outdoor Shembe Church. Follow this with an audience with a sangoma or visit a local tavern on the way for some welcome refreshment. Another hidden treasure that is off the beaten track is the Red Desert just outside Port Edward. It is reputed to be the smallest desert in the world, being barely 200 metres in diameter. Its man-high hills and valleys of naked red soil are in stark contrast to the surrounding lush and tropical vegetation. This peculiar phenomenon is surrounded by myth and legend including stories that this is the site of an alien landing, though more likely a Zulu tribe in the 1800s, with vast cattle herds stolen from the Pondo’s severely over-grazed the area which was subsequently eroded by wind leading to the desertification.

Hike up mountainous sand dunes, through thick coastal forest, onto pristine beaches and the warm Indian Ocean. It incorporates the best of both land and sea safari experiences with its world-class conservation areas that include the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and Africa’s oldest game reserve, the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park. The 332000ha iSimangaliso Wetland Park was inscribed as South Africa’s first World Heritage Site in December 1999. It is not only a marine World Heritage Site but also forms part of Africa’s first transfrontier Marine Protected Area together with Mozambique. Amongst other attributes, this marine area provides protection for five of the world’s seven sea turtle species, of which two (the loggerhead and endangered leatherback turtle) nest on its shores; 1200 species of fish; 100 species of warm water coral; whales, whale sharks, sharks and dolphins, and the world’s oldest fish – the coelacanth. The underwater reefs are home to a variety of brightly coloured fish and a spectacular coral diversity. In addition to marine activities, the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a ‘Big Five’ reserve, offers wonderful game viewing, bird watching, and canoeing. The uMkhuze section of the Park, boasts more than 420 recorded bird species and is renowned for its game-viewing hides, pans and the guided ‘fig forest walk’. The Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park, is also home to many species of antelope as well as rhino, large populations of elephant, buffalo and giraffe and predators such as the lion, cheetah and the elusive leopard. WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

ZULULAND The Zululand region lies north of the Thukela River and extends to the subtropical northern parts of KwaZulu-Natal. It is an area of breathtaking hills and valleys dotted with traditional tribal villages and quaint towns - a place where the rolling waves of the warm Indian Ocean crash onto golden beaches adjoined by lush coastal forests. Its where Zulu hospitality abounds, and you can unexpectedly be invited to share a meal or drink... or be the invited guest at a wedding or special ceremony. For a glimpse into the history of the region, pop into the Zululand Historical Museum located within Fort Nongqavi Museum in Eshowe, the oldest town of European settlement in Zululand. The museum depicts the history of Zululand from the early Iron Age and focuses on the fascinating crosscultural influences of the past 200 years. An interesting story is that of Hans Schreuder, a Norwegian missionary. Hans had dealings with Zulu king Mpande KaSenzangakhona who at that time was unwell, and as a result of helping the ailing king was allowed to begin teaching Christianity to the people. A first in the region. The Vukani Zulu Cultural Museum, also within the For Nongqayi complex, houses some of the best Zulu arts and crafts work collected over the years, with several of the artists receiving international recognition for their work. The Vukani Association was formed more than 30 years ago to revive the then-dying art of basketry. Through Vukani, men and women have pooled their inherited knowledge of grasses, palm leaves, natural dyes, beadwork, woodcarving and ceramics to produce a range of contemporary items with a traditional theme which has created a new market for the crafters of Zululand.

DID YOU KNOW? communities in the area where visitors can experience traditional Zulu hospitality, or a traditional Zulu wedding ceremony, and if you wish, visit a traditional healer. For an urban view of Zulu culture, take a township tour showcasing modern Zulu life including taverns, shebeens and traditional medicine shops. Another traditional experience is the annual celebration of the Zulu King’s Reed Dance, the uMkhosi woMhlanga, a traditional ceremony of maidens held annually during the first weekend of September. Maidens from all over the province and from as far afield as the Kingdom of Swaziland flock to the eNyokeni Royal Palace to participate in the traditional dance of the maidens. The girls converge in groups from the Zululand regions to the Kings Palace the day before the ceremony. The main attraction of the ceremony is the presentation of reeds to the King. Each maiden is to carry a reed from the river and present it to the King in a spectacular procession at the Palace. Zululand offers opportunities for an authentic insight into the contemporary cultural lifestyle of the average rural Zulu person, to experience village life as happens – a vibrant living culture.

There are many insightful opportunities for visitors to experience living Zulu culture at first hand… Zululand Eco-Adventures offers visits to local

DLINZA FOREST AERIAL BOARDWALK The Boardwalk, the first of its kind in Southern Africa and exclusive to Eshowe, is a 150 metre walkway built above the forest floor, which allows visitors to view the flora, fauna and avifauna at a comfortable level. It ends with a 20 metre high tower, offering dramatic views of both the forest canopy and surrounding countryside. The Boardwalk employs a number of trained birding guides who are available to show visitors some of the delights of the forest.

One hundred and eighty different wildflower species blossom in the grasslands, and Eshowe is one of very few towns in the country which has trees in flower every day of the year!

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

BATTLEFIELDS The Battlefields is a region of much significance in the history and heritage of KwaZulu-Natal and boasts the largest concentration of significant battles and war related sites in South Africa. It is where Zulus, Voortrekkers and British clashed in some of the bloodiest battles in the history of South Africa, shaping the towns and villages of this region. The wars were fought over land and sovereignty and played out over almost 100 years. Today people travel from around the world to revisit the areas where these momentous events in our history took place. Besides taking an organized tour, there are several self-drive routes established to enable you to visit these historic towns and sites. Knowledgeable, friendly and accredited local guides are available and guarantee hour upon hour of captivating company. The King Shaka’s Way Route takes visitors from the coastal region of Stanger, through Eshowe, Melmoth and on to Ulundi and offers world-class game reserves, heritage sites and Zulu culture and tradition. The Remembrance Route begins from Pietermaritzburg through Greytown, Tugela Ferry, and Dundee and onto the Ithala Game Reserve and is an area incredibly rich in Zulu culture. The Rifleman’s Road Route starts from Volkrust in the northwest, down through Newcastle, Dundee, Ladysmith, Colenso and Estcourt. Visitors will encounter fabulous scenery, generous hospitality, and tales of great courage and endurance. From Ulundi through to Vryheid, on to Paulpietersburg and Ithala Game Reserve the Warrior’s Trek Route offers stunning scenery, warm mineral fountains, battlefields, game viewing and culture galore – visit the Ncome Museum, dedicated to fallen Zulu warriors and to Zulu culture. The Siege Salute Route has a high concentration of historical sites encompassing Anglo-Boer War and several Voortrekker- Zulu War sites. Major towns along the route are Ladysmith, Colenso, Estcourt and Winterton – don’t miss the memorial to the Battle of Spionkop. This route is abundant with beautiful landscapes, wildlife, birdlife and adventures. Dundee is the centre of the Red Soldiers Route, and the impressive Talana Museum, set in a 20-acre heritage

DID YOU KNOW? park, on the outskirts of the town depicts the varied history of the region. Battle sites on this route include the Isandlwana, Rorkes Drift and Fugitives drift. At the Carnegie Art Gallery in Newcastle contemporary South African art works can be viewed and a well-stocked shop with local craftwork and the unique Isiphethu fabric art is available. The townships of Madadeni, Osizweni and Blaauwbosch provide a unique cultural experience and historic sites connected to Nelson Mandela, Chief Albert Luthuli and other local heroes. Ladysmith is famous for another group of local heroes, the male choral group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Formed in the early 1960s and singing in the local style of isicathamiya and mbube, the group went on to sing with Paul Simon and many other international musicians and won their first Grammy in 1988 and have been awarded three more since.
