SANIBONANI and Welcome to the Exceptional Zulu Kingdom
KwaZulu-Natal has started the year on a high note. Over the past few months, we have hosted a number of events that have seen thousands of visitors descending to our shores straight after the Festive Season. We hosted the Dusi Canoe Marathon, the Midmar Mile and the 16th Metro FM awards. Events such as these continue to bring in huge revenue for our tourism sector during low season periods. This, coupled with the work done by the Durban KZN Convention Bureau, which has successfully bid for numerous international meetings and exhibitions, goes a long way towards ensuring that our sector remains robust. We are confident that we will continue to see more big conferences heading to KZN after a very successful participation at Meetings Africa, where the team met with the continent’s business events representatives from local, regional and international associations, corporate, government and incentive business event buyers. Business tourism is a significant and growing element of tourism in the world, which generates $600 billion and sustains an estimated 62 million jobs annually. In KZN, this sector generates an estimated R3 billion a year and sustains almost 24 000 jobs. Business travellers spend almost three times more than leisure travellers, and almost 6% of them will return to that destination as leisure tourists. On the international front, we remain steadfast in positioning KZN as a global destination. We have just returned from ITB, Berlin, one of the two top travel exhibitions in the world. There we engaged with international buyers from 185 countries to ensure that we continue to increase arrivals from Germany, from where we currently receive an estimated 45 000 arrivals. We have also joined forces with Trade and Investment KwaZulu-Natal (TIKZN) and a group of major property developers from the province such as Tongaat-Hulett Developments, Aktiv Property Development, Royal Haskoning DHV, eLan Property Group, DevMark Global and Rokwil Pty Ltd, to lobby for international investors at Le marche international des professionnels de l’mmobilier (MIPIM) in Cannes, France to plough money into the development of tourism products in the province. At MIPIM, we showcased some of the tourism investment projects that we have already identified and feel that they have great potential to yield positive results for the province if they can get the financial backing from major investors.

Over the next few months, KwaZulu-Natal will be hosting the World Economic Forum which will be attended by regional and global leaders from business, government and civil society to explore solutions to create economic opportunities for all. Soon after that, we will welcome back the Tourism Indaba, which will bring in over 10 000 delegates. Last year, Indaba was attended by 585 buyers and an estimated 100 media. Emerging tourism business entrepreneurs, who are currently part of our incubation program, will exhibit side by side with TKZN, and we will give them ample support to equip them with the tools to broker deals with major players and partners in the tourism sector. They will also be given special access to meet and network with the international buyers who attend Indaba. The Lilizela Tourism Awards are now officially open and we are calling on the tourism players in the province to take part in the programme, which honours those who have raised the bar in entrepreneurial and service excellence standards within the sector. We would like to increase the number of participants from the province this year from the 124 eligible entries in 2015, and 149 in 2016. We believe that this will better position us to win more trophies at the National Lilizela Awards to be hosted by the Minister of Tourism later this year. We are looking forward to welcoming all those who will be coming to our beautiful province for their Easter holidays. We promise to give you and your family an unforgettable experience. If you haven’t finalized your plans yet, visit our website www.zulu.org.za where you can book your accommodation hassle free on our Hotels. com portal. For those of you who will be driving to KZN, we encourage you to take the more scenic routes, enjoy stopovers and delight in some of our amazing experiences along your route. Don’t forget to share those picture moments with us on all our social media networks, Facebook (KZNTourism), Instagram (@ tourismkzn_official), Twitter (@Tourism KZN), YouTube (KwaZulu-Natal Tourism Authority) and Pintrest (KZN Tourism), and remember to #GottaLuvKZN.

Security has become a major issue as the poaching of rhinos is rising at an alarming rate. The THULA THULA RHINO FUND was created to raise funds to increase the safekeeping of our rhinos, anti- poaching training for our guards and specialized equipment which will allow us to improve the much needed protection of our rhinos.

The greatest wealth is health…Virgil One of the most important things in life is to be healthy-not just physically, but mentally, emotionally and spiritually as well. More and more people are opting for healthier lifestyles that promote wellness and reduce stress as well as searching for balance of mind body and spitit Be aware of stressful factors in your life - manage your reaction to stressful things, be aware of the things that stress you out and try to avoid them. Maintain healthy eating habits - get all the nutrition the human body needs by eating a varied and balanced diet. Sleep well every night - Adults should get 7 - 9 hours daily and school-aged children should get 10 - 11 hours. Exercise is one of the best ways to improve sleep patterns. Stick to a program of exercise - The muscle you develop will help increase your metabolism: the bodies of muscular people burn more calories even while they’re at rest Make little lifestyle changes - park farther away from the store, walk the dog, take the stairs, or weed your garden, eat less, drink more water etc. Visit your local Spa for a pamper and spoil the results are well worth it…

This season has much to tempt enthusiasts to show their support for our vibrant live entertainment industry. The KZN Philharmonic Orchestra features in two great choral works – JS Bach’s St John Passion and Handel’s Messiah, both conducted by Naum Rousine. The Bach masterwork will be performed by the Durban Symphonic Choir and soloists at St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Mariannhill on 9 April starting at 2.30pm. Tickets are R120 at the door. Free parking is available. The annual staging of Handel’s Messiah in the Playhouse Opera Theatre is on 16 April at 3pm. Directed by Marcus Desando, this features Khumbuzile Dlamini, Violina Anguelov, Thabiso Masemene and Aubrey Lodewyk with the Playhouse Chorale. Tickets are R80 and R100 and booking is through Computicket. Rory Booth (Keeping Up With The Kandasamys) stars as Sunil Mohan in Reoca Light – Ashwin Singh’s stage onehander about a young man who oversees the closure of his parent’s convenience store after a series of robberies. Directed by Ralph Lawson, this mix of storytelling, drama and comedy plays in the Playhouse Loft Theatre at 7.30pm from 5 to 8 April. Tickets are R100.
The International Arts Foundation (INF) of New Orleans, in association with The Playhouse Company, presents two red letter events. The first of these sees Grammy Award-winning legend, Cyril Neville, hailed as ‘the last of the great Southern blues singers’, sharing the stage in the Playhouse Opera Theatre on Thursday 4 May, in concert with Durban’s own SAMA Awardwinning favourite, Ernie Smith. The second collaboration between INF and 16 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN April-May 2017
the Playhouse Company marks the South African premiere of the acclaimed stage drama, We Live Here by American playwright Harold Ellis Clark, whose work has been compared to the plays of South Africa’s Atholl Fugard. The powerfullywritten work looks at racial prejudice when a young black couple move into a ‘white’ suburb of New Orleans. It addresses the burning issues of hatred, fear and intolerance, which challenge communities the world over. We Live Here stars an ensemble cast from the United States. It runs from 5 to 7 May, with performances at 7.30pm. Tickets range from R175.
by Evan Roberts, and lighting design by Tina le Roux. Exploring the themes of celebrity, scandal and corruption in prohibition-era, jazzinfused Chicago, the satirical musical-noir is based on a 1926 play by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins about real life Chicago criminals in true cases. The story centres on vaudevillian showgirl, Velma Kelly (played by Katy Moore) and housewife, Roxie Hart (Jessica Sole) two murderesses who find themselves in jail awaiting trial – fighting for the fame that will keep them from the gallows. Also in the cast are Billy (Jason Ralph); Mama Morton (Charon Williams Ros); Mary Sunshine (Anne Marie Clulow) and Amos (Bryan Hiles). The production also features an onstage live nine piece band under the direction of Evan Roberts. Show stopping hits spawned by the famous work include All that Jazz; When You’re Good to Mama; Cell Block Tango; Mister Cellophane and Razzle Dazzle. Book through Computicket.
Booking for both events is through Computicket 0861 915 8000 or online at www. computicket.com, or on 031-369 9540 (office hours). Log onto www.playhousecompany. com for more about shows running at The Playhouse, including the annual New Stages season, which runs between 3 and 28 May. Titles featured here conjure an intriguing line-up of live theatre. They include, among others: the Market Theatre’s Naledi Award winning Crepusule, based on the short story of the same name by cultural icon Can Themba; Izipopolo, a collaboration between theatre-maker and director Neil Coppen (Tin Bucket Drum, Animal Farm) and identical twin brothers and actors Musawenkosi and Bongumusa Shabalala; and the compelling dance drama, We are still marching, choreographed by Sunnyboy Motau of Moving Into Dance Mophatong. KickstArt’s production of the hit American musical, Chicago, heads the seasonal attractions at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre on the Durban campus of UKZN. This runs from 7 – 30 April. With music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and book by Ebb and Bob Fosse, the Durban staging of Chicago is directed by Steven Stead, designed by Greg King, musical direction
And also at the Sneddon, be sure to catch funny men John van der Ruit and Ben Voss as they set the stage on fire in their eagerly anticipated new sketch comedy, Mamba Republic. Reuniting the talents of Voss (Beauty Ramapelepele) and John van de Ruit (Spud), Mamba Republic takes a savagely funny look at all that is wrong and very wrong in the Rainbow Nation. The show opens on 16 May and runs into June. Booking is at Computicket. Finally, note that this year’s annual Zakifo Music Festival in Durban is set to run at Blue Lagoon Beach between 26 and 28 May. Expect some really great bands and musos from around the world.

DURBAN
A warm Durban welcome to all local and international visitors to the annual TOURISM INDABA, one of the largest tourism marketing events on the African calendar, and one of the top three ‘must visit’ events of its kind on the global calendar, showcasing a variety of Southern Africa’s best tourism products. Take time to enjoy the city to its fullest extent and experience the special charm that Durban, gateway to the Zulu Kingdom, has to offer.
DID YOU KNOW?
For more info check out the website www.durbanexperience.co.za Durban is a modern, authentic African metropolis - a city that celebrates its cultural diversity and multi-cultural traditions. It’s a city that lavishes its visitors with sophistication and style, tantalises their taste buds with local specialties like ‘bunny chow’ and shisa nyama and gets their adrenalin pumping with adventure activities as diverse as the population that lives here. It’s little wonder that Durban was recently ranked ‘the South African city with the highest quality of life’ in the international Mercer’s Quality of Living survey… for a third consecutive year! We invite visitors to discover what makes Durban not only a great place to live, but enticing destination to visit.
Mahatma Gandhi’s Phoenix Settlement includes the International Printing Press where, in 1903, he founded and printed a newspaper originally known as ‘Indian Opinion’ – it was an important tool for the political movement to fight racial discrimination and win civil rights for the Indian community in South Africa. 20 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN April-May 2017
This coastal city, that’s blessed with the warm Indian Ocean and a summer that lasts for virtually 12 months of the year, invites visitors to walk the promenade at sunrise, to take the surfing lesson you’ve always wanted, or join the locals at the monthly Salsa dance sessions at the Suncoast Amphitheatre. Enjoy cocktails and live music at a trendy jazz club, pop into a street-side café for a cappuccino or craft beer, or head to a local shebeen for a memorable township experience. Get a taste of Durban’s colonial history with ‘high tea’ at one of the city’s hotels, its Indian heritage with a visit to the Victoria Street Market to stock up on spices and the Markets of Warwick for an African vibe. This is where local traders sell everything from beadwork and traditional
art to fresh produce, herbal medicine and traditional cuisine - you must visit the Bovine Head Market… the succulent facial meat is served off the bone with condiments and dumplings. Be sure to pop into the Station Drive Precinct, one of the latest urban renewal projects in Durban and is home to a variety of creative spaces. Check out the Morning Trade - a Sunday artisanal market selling everything from fresh produce, fab food and tasty treats to great coffee, craft beer and hand crafted goods. Across the street is The Warehouse, an artsy kind of place with juice bar, tattoo parlour and a variety of cool retail outlets. Further down the street is the design and décor heaven World Travellers and around the corner The Station. For some local tipple visit Distillery031 (think G&T with local South African flavours), and S43, Home of That Brewing Company. This is an ‘eat, shop, eatsome-more’, chill kind of place that mustn’t be rushed. To really ‘do’ Durban you need to experience it as the locals do and discover why we really #loveDurban.

Umhlanga’s only high-end boutique mall is open. Situated within the renowned “The Pearls of Umhlanga”, the mall forms part of this iconic R3 billion development. 26 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN April-May 2017
Offering residents and customers highend products and services that one would normally find in a regional mall, but in a smaller, more exclusive setting, the Pearls Mall, like The Pearls of Umhlanga, is upmarket, visually appealing and an overarching asset to the area. There is something for everyone, with outlets like Levisons, Jill and Co, Surfers, SoHo and Platinum Jewellers to name but a few. While restaurants like Casa Bella, John Dory’s, Cattle Baron and Café La Plage offer a selection of world-class delicacies to please any ones taste pallet. Fitness enthusiasts will get their hearts racing and adrenalin pumping at the Planet Fitness, Just Gym, whilst the beauty conscious can get pampered at the Grant Harper hair salon, Nail It or Hello Hunny beauty salon. For complete convenience, the Pearls Mall boasts South Africa’s flagship Food Lovers Eatery and stores such as the Key & Shoe Cove who have a cobbler on-site, and Orange Sky Laundry. For family fun, @Play is the perfect place for your children (and for moms who just need a little break), and not forgetting the incredible Imbizo Gallery, for all the art lovers out there. The Pearls Mall will not only offer residents of the resort unlimited access to a host of additional amenities on its doorstep, but will also add value to residents of Umhlanga as well as the thousands of tourists who flock to the village annually. The opening of the Pearls Mall will undoubtedly be a major boost for the Umhlanga area as a whole. Whilst this area unarguably offers the best in terms of its seaside location and upscale residential developments, there is nothing like the Pearls Mall.

1000 Hills
Enquiries: 031 777 1874 Website: http://1000hillstourism.com/
When Europeans arrived at the Port of Natal in 1825, the Valley of 1000 Hills was a remote and isolated area teeming with game. WS Field was one of the first Europeans to settle in 1851, and leopards were said to occasionally spend the night on the veranda of the Field homestead in what is now Kloof. Within a few years a wagon route opened up between Durban and the interior, close to what is now the Old Main Road. The establishment of the railway line linking the goldfields with the port rapidly followed the discovery of gold in the Transvaal in the 1880s, and the rail and road traffic through the 1000 Hills increased. WOZA MOYA is the empowerment project of the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust , our mission is “To serve all those impacted by HIV/AIDS by providing unconditional love and hope in a practical, sustainable way.” Woza Moya, our well-known onsite craft store, aims to empower and uplift people infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS to become economically self-sufficient through the production of crafts within their own environment. The project’s main aim is to teach craft skills to individuals who are infected/ affected by HIV/AIDS through the production and sale of beaded items, ceramics, wirework, crochet work, fabric painting and sewing. Woza Moya provides an income to roughly 350 crafters (includes pottery, beadwork, sewing, crocheting, fabric painting and wirework) who are supported by the funds raised through craft sales. Woza Moya is also the name behind a number of well-publicized art projects, including the Dreams 4 Africa Chair and the World’s First Beaded Suit.
VULEKA CENTRE Vuleka Trust is an NGO based at The Vuleka Centre in Botha’s Hill. We are ideally located between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, nestled in the Valley of 1000 Hills. A special focus of Vuleka is youth development and leadership programmes.

The Mandela Capture sculpture is an internationally recognisable landmark, created by Marco Cianfanelli, called ‘Release’. It comprises 50 laser cut steel column constructions each between 6.5 and 9.5 metres tall. When viewed from the road look like a forest of jagged bars – much like a jail, but when approached from the long path the steel columns come together creating a flat two-dimensional image recreating Mandela’s image – symbolising freedom, which we see when we choose where we stand.
Pick up a Midlands Meander map and explore some of the routes offering visitors easy directions to a wealth of fabulous cuisine, historic landmarks, artist studios and ‘shop till you drop’ opportunities to take home the perfect hand-woven rug, wrought iron candlesticks, a designer pottery teapot or deliciously creamy Swiss-styled local goats cheese. Kids will love exploring the gardens of Groundcover, painting their own pottery at the Zulu-Lulu Art Bar or feeding the goats at Swissland cheese. Be sure to pop in to the Mandela Capture Site to view the remarkable sculpture that marks the place where former president, Nelson Mandela was captured. Alongside the
sculpture is a temporary exhibition telling the story of Nelson Mandela’s journey from comrade, leader, prisoner and negotiator to statesman. Pietermaritzburg, KZN’s capital city, shows off its agricultural roots with the much loved Royal Show, where livestock and agricultural equipment, blend seamlessly with lifestyle exhibitions, music concerts and a funfair. The show, first hosted by the Pietermaritzburg agricultural Society in 1851, was granted ‘Royal’ status in 1904 following the Anglo Boer War and the assent of King Edward VII – the name, which remained unchanged after South Africa became a Republic, pays homage to the many Victorian buildings that dot the streets of this historic town that was founded by the Voortrekkers, administered by the British and instrumental in Mahatma Gandhi’s decision to remain in South Africa to fight the racial discrimination against Indians.

ART IN THE PARK : 3 - 7 MAY Art in the Park is a premier outdoor art-selling exhibition where artists exhibit and sell their works direct to the public and is part of a mix of events that Pietermaritzburg City is known for. It is in its 55th year of presentation and is now transitioning from an event to a festival of note. Creative Arts College, an award winning art institute has been announced as the main sponsor of Art in the Park and commits to its development as an international calendar event. Whilst ‘fine art’ in the form of paintings remains the focal point of the festival the entire park will be occupied with other forms of art exhibitions from performing arts to digital arts, craft & production art, photography, kiddies theatre, food pavilion and many more exciting stalls and activities. It is not only a fantastic event to support due to its exciting nature, it is also one that carries a strong positive objective of development and unification through arts. Art is indeed a vehicle that has the power to change opinions and break barriers. The theme of “Art in the Park” festival is Social Cohesion and will be incorporated in many ways within the production elements of performance art and other forms. The subtheme is “Save the Rhino”, which will be especially celebrated at the kiddies area with an enthralling line up of activities for the young ones.
Art in the park is an event that will stimulate the creative fraternity as it creates awareness around art and it creates a platform for artists to showcase and sell their works, allowing them to participate in the economy. Mr Dumisani Mhlongo of the Msunduzi Pietermaritzburg Tourism Association is excited with the growth of the event and is proud to host the event at the KZN National Botanical Gardens in Pietermaritzburg which offers a safe and secure venue. Art in the park takes place from the 3rd to the 7th of May 2017 and is certainly going to be an event that mesmerizes and captivates its audiences. Show times are as follows: Wednesday – Thursday 10h00 – 21h00 Friday – Saturday 09h00 – 22h00 Sunday – 09h00 – 1600
The CEO of Creative Arts College, Mr Kevin Palium states that “Art is one of the highest forms of expression and communication. It is also a key instrument in creating a congruent multiracial, multicultural society.”

BATTLEFIELDS
The KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields boast the largest concentration of significant battles and war-related sites in South Africa – with 82 battlefields, museums, old fortifications and places of remembrance. But if it’s more than history you’re looking for, the Battlefields region does not disappoint, with a wide variety of activities on offer. Adventure junkies will love white water rafting down the mighty Thukela, bird watchers will delight at the variety to be seen on the Amajuba Birding Meander and all will enjoy soaking away the stress in the soothing waters of the hot springs.
DID YOU KNOW?
For more info check out the website www.battlefields.kzn.org.za There are several self-drive Battlefield Routes that enable visitors to optimise their visit to this region’s historic towns and sites. Knowledgeable, friendly and accredited local guides are available and guarantee hour upon hour of captivating company. Be sure to include the Blood River Battlefield and the Ncome Zulu Cultural Museum, commemorating this 1838 battle between Voortrekker and Zulu, the Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift Battlefields to pay tribute to both the Zulu and British soldiers who lost their lives on that fateful day in 1879 during the Anglo Zulu War, and the Talana Battlefield and Museum in Dundee for an overview of the Anglo Boer War in 1899.
In 1849 a trader named James Rorke purchased land on the banks of the Buffalo River, the border between British governed Natal and independent KwaZulu – his store was known by locals as kwaJimu, Jim’s place, and trade was welcomed. He died in 1875, shortly after selling his trading post to a Norwegian Missionary, and is buried nearby. 36 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN April-May 2017
Visitors will encounter fabulous scenery, generous hospitality, and tales of great courage and endurance. These routes include options such as world-class game reserves, heritage sites, battlefields and Zulu culture and tradition, as well as stunning scenery, warm mineral fountains, fly fishing and birding. Look out for local craft shops and art galleries, many stocked with beautiful handicraft that will surely become a treasured keepsake. At the Carnegie Art Gallery in Newcastle, contemporary South African art
works can be viewed and a well-stocked shop with local craftwork and the unique Isiphethu fabric art is available. Both Thukela Ferry and Pomeroy produce fine arts and crafts. On the mountainside overlooking the breathtaking precipice of the Thukela Valley is the KwaKopi Curio Shop and community art and crafts centre that has an array of traditional beadwork, pottery and woven grass products, and includes a workshop area for local artists. At Kwakunje, at the Talana Museum in Dundee, visitors are invited to experience Zulu cultural life as it was and see how it is changing. They are able to interact with the crafters, guides and storytellers and are soon steeped in the mystique of the traditional way of life and how it has adapted over time to meet the demands of outside and progressive forces.

Or tee off on one of the North Coast’s excellent golf courses. Keen golfers will appreciate the sweeping fairways of Umhlali’s golf course at the Umhlali country club – its water holes often attract antelope and zebra, and the exotic palm trees give it a tropical feel. The internationally-designed Zimbali Golf Course, which is amongst the top courses in South Africa in terms of the ultimate golfing experience, is a must visit to any keen golfer accepting the challenges
of narrow fairways and bunkers surrounding the greens. A fascinating cultural mix exists in this region, created by the subsequent waves of adventurers moving into the area - from the arrival of colonialists, the French Mauritian sugar cane growers, to the indentured Indian labourers. For culture and history, visit historic battle sites such as the Ultimatum Tree, Ndondakusuka or Fort Pearson, or visit the burial place of the great Zulu King at Kwa-Dukuza. Zulu hospitality is warm and the people friendly, and they are proud to show you their heritage. This region is also home to a large Indian community, so look out for their temples, sample their spicy foods or shop for fresh produce at any of the numerous markets. DRAKENSBERG
The Drakensberg Mountains, reaching 3,000 metres above sea level, are part of the 243,000 hectare uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, which was added to the World Heritage Site list in 2000. The Zulu name, uKhahlamba, meaning ‘barrier of spears’ and the Afrikaans name, Drakensberge, meaning ‘dragon mountains’, aptly describe this awe inspiring region – UNESCO described it as having ‘exceptional natural beauty in its soaring basaltic buttresses, incisive dramatic cutbacks, and golden sandstone ramparts’.
DID YOU KNOW?
2017 marks the 50th anniversary of when the Tungay family opened their farm in the central KwaZulu-Natal Drakensberg to the first group of boys of the now world famous Drakensberg Boys Choir. These 50 years have seen much growth and success, and the boys are often referred to as ‘South Africa’s singing Ambassadors’.

For more info check out the website www.drakensberg.kzn.org.za The Southern Drakensberg offers visitors a wealth of outdoor activities, from trout fishing and hiking to 4x4 excursions traverse the highest pass-road in South Africa by 4x4… don’t forget your passport! This route takes visitors along the upper Mkomazana River up Sani Pass and into Lesotho (2,874 metres above sea-level). Or experience the awesome Drakensberg on horseback, rom hour-long rides in the foothills to a three-day expedition into Lesotho in the safe hands of a local guide and a sure-footed Basotho pony. Love local music? Then head to the Splashy Fen music festival in Underberg over the Easter weekend (13-16 April) for breath-taking mountain views, a variety of local music and a great festival vibe – from craft market, kids entertainment and a trail running course to artisan food and craft beer. The Central Drakensberg is a mecca for the adventurous and offers a number of options… take the challenge of one on the many rock-climbing routes in the central Drakensberg, or feel the adrenalin rush provided by abseiling, kloofing and white water rafting. Or take a helicopter ride to view the majestic peaks from above – a great ‘wow’ experience to include in any itinerary. For a spot of history and culture, seek out ancient Bushman rock art, evidence
of the San people who lived in the area in ancient times. Experience the magic of MUSIC IN THE MOUNTAINS as you listen to the Drakensberg Boys Choir perform - in the words of the late Mr Harry Oppenheimer “For me there is no sound more uplifting, or more emotive that that of a boys’ choir... it reaches into the soul, and refreshes and stimulates the heart and mind. It gives voice to our hopes, and invigorates our worthier aspirations.” The Northern Drakensberg is home to the spectacular Amphitheatre, the source of the uThukela River which plunges some 950 metres over the edge of the Mont-auxSources plateau in spectacular fashion. ELEPHANT COAST
The Elephant Coast incorporates the best of both land and sea safari experiences with its world-class conservation areas that include the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa’s first proclaimed World Heritage Site, and Africa’s oldest game reserve, the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park. Natural and cultural diversity abound in this narrow strip of land, approximately 200 kilometers long and just 70 kilometers wide, and home to an incredible 21 different ecosystems.

The iSimangaliso Wetland Park provides permanent employment for 96 previously disadvantaged women and men from neighbouring communities to patrol and clean the coastal zone. Plastic in our oceans and on our beaches is detrimental to marine life and was recently implicated in the death of a washed up humpback whale.
For more info check out the website www.elephantcoast.kzn.org.za This diversity included a range of habitats - from dense evergreen forests of towering fig trees, swamp forests with tangled masses of greenery and thick coastal forest to mountainous sand dunes, pristine beaches and a healthy marine eco-system. Add to this the African bushveld with its thorn trees and abundance of wildlife, and you’ve got a destination offering a wealth of activities and experiences. There are dozens of game reserves, beautiful beaches, deep sea fishing and diving on a number of reefs, mountain trails, cultural activities and historical sites. Not only is the HluhluweiMfolozi Park credited with saving the once endangered white rhino, but it is also home to many species of antelope as well as large populations of elephant, buffalo and giraffe, and predators such as the lion, cheetah and the elusive leopard. There are also a number of private game reserves in the region that offer wildlife activities and experiences in addition to offering fabulous ‘bush wedding’ and conference facilities.
and coastal forests that is home to about 250 species of bird. The pristine beaches in the region are the nesting ground of sea turtles that come to shore from October and December to lay their eggs – hatching occurs between December and March and is a memorable sight that is closely monitored by resident researchers. The town of St Lucia, located on the shores of the St Lucia Estuary, is surrounded by the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. With its lakes, lagoons, freshwater swamps and grasslands, the Isimangaliso Wetland Park supports more species of animal than many of the better known parks and deltas in Southern Africa. Whale watching is a popular activity, when from June to November the humpback whales migrate from their summer feeding grounds close to the poles, to warmer water for winter breeding. Other activities include game viewing, lake cruises, walking trails, horseback trails and canoe trips.
The Kosi Bay Nature Reserve is an unspoiled area surrounding the rare and beautiful Kosi Bay lake system and is a tropical paradise of crystal clear water, marshland, swamp www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN April-May 2017 45

ZULULAND
The Zululand region comprises the ‘Zululand Coast’ and the inland area generally referred to as the ‘Heart of the Zulu Kingdom’. The Zululand Coast’s golden shores are gently caressed by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, offering idyllic beaches and crystal clear waters. Stretching inland are endless rolling hills, meandering valleys, as well as grassy plains teaming with wildlife. Forest sanctuaries and misty mountain peaks create an atmosphere of peace and tranquility – interrupted only by a plethora of birdcalls. The fascinating culture of the Zulu people, rich in tradition and symbolism, is visibly evident in this captivating region.
DID YOU KNOW?
For more info check out the website www.zululand.kzn.org.za Not only is the ‘Zululand Coast’ gateway to some of KwaZulu-Natal’s finest game reserves, but it also offers excellent bird watching opportunities. The Umlalazi Nature Reserve and the Raphia Palm Monument in Mtunzini, as well as the nearby Ongoye Forest are popular. So are the Dlinza Forest and Aerial Boardwalk in Eshowe… be sure to hire a Birdlife SA local guide to make the most of each opportunity. A visit to the Fort Nongqayi Museum Village takes you back to a time when the three turreted fort housed the barefoot Zulu police (the Nongqayi) whose task it was to protect the British administration after the AngloZulu War. Enjoy a cuppa tea in a 19th century corrugated iron settler’s house and shop for locally made Zulu craft.
The harbour city of Richards Bay is a fascinating blend of industrial-, eco- and cultural-tourism and offers all the implied delights of a beachfront mini-metropolis in the midst of this nature-lover’s dream. The Tuzi Gazi Waterfront is situated west of the beaches and offers accommodation as well as numerous shops, pubs, restaurants and walk-on moorings that add to the vibrant atmosphere.
The quite country town of Eshowe is also known for its craft beer and music – pop into the Zululand Brewery for a pint of Zulu Blonde, catch one of the regular musical performances or if make special trip for The Great Zululand Music Festival (20-23 April). Featuring 12 bands across three venues over the weekend, this festival is sure to be a hit with music lovers.
The ‘Heart of The Zulu Kingdom’ echoes the past in many ways and is a reminder of the rich history of Zululand which has nurtured the growth and development of the Zulu nation. This land also witnessed one of the greatest challenges to the supremacy of the British Empire during the tragic but heroic days of the Anglo-Zulu War. But the ’Heart of the Zulu Kingdom’ is more than just a place. It is where the visitor to Zululand can feel its powerful presence in the people’s immense pride in their own heritage and culture... from the Seven Kings, who lie buried at the eMakhosini Ophathe Heritage Park, to the Big Five. There is an extensive network of nature reserves and game parks ensuring an abundance of flora and fauna to delight the visitor – from several hundred bird species, many species of antelope, hippo, cheetah, giraffe to the Big Five...lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino.
