JEWELLERY SHINE ON contd Coloured stones are also very much in vogue. Instead of brilliant white diamonds, a growing number of brides are choosing fancy pink, red and purple gems, as well as natural shades of green and blue, or even an ultra-modern chocolate or black diamond! In addition to coloured diamonds, sapphires, zirconia and topaz are favourite choices, while rubies and emeralds create an engagement ring with heirloom quality. This colourful trend echoes the move away from the traditional white wedding dress towards a rainbow of pastel-shaded gowns. Naturalistic bridal jewellery, adorned with flower, petal, leaf or vine motifs, is a hugely popular look for necklaces and earrings as well as engagement rings and wedding bands. So too is the elaborate filigree work typical of the 1920s, when the Art Deco movement was all the rage. Dramatic costume jewellery is another trend that’s gaining traction, as is jewellery for the groom! Select a style of ring to complement your personality and interests. Romantic brides could choose a pink-toned heart-shaped diamond set in rose or white gold, while active brides might prefer a practical, flushmount setting that will protect the gem and prevent snagging. An exotic rose-cut diamond set in yellow gold could be perfect for a Bohemian bride. Trendy brides can add some bling to their look with a fancy yellow diamond surrounded by a multitude of smaller sparklers and set in a diamond-covered band. A platinum band with a lustrous bezel-set stone is a minimalist, modern classic. STYLES, STONES AND SETTINGS Engagement rings come in different styles and settings, from solitaire to multi-stone, cluster and random-set. While a modern look might call for a tension setting, a four-prong setting is a timeless classic, and a vintage ring would shine in an intricately wrought setting. The thickness

and height of the band depends on the stone size and setting, and should be in proportion to your finger size. The latest innovation is the squareshaped band, which is reputed to be even more comfortable than a round band. After the ever-fashionable diamond, sapphires and rubies are the next most popular choice because they are harder than other precious stones. Semi-precious gems tend to be softer and are more prone to damage. Shapes include brilliant (round), pear (tear-shaped), princess (square), emerald (rectangular) and marquise (an elongated oval), as well as oval and heart-shaped. An emerald or marquise shaped stone looks lovely on a long-fingered bride, while the brilliant or princess shape suits those with shorter fingers. As a general rule, white gold or platinum is a very flattering setting for diamonds or sapphires, making them look even brighter, while yellow gold settings are best for emeralds, rubies and opals. Also consider your skin tone. Brides with dark or olive complexions can wear yellow or white gold, those with fairer skin might prefer white gold, and red-heads could opt for white gold or the ever-feminine rose gold. Pure, rare and low maintenance too, platinum is the strongest and most durable of the precious metals, & provides an ultra-secure setting for a gemstone. The naturally white colour of platinum won’t tarnish or fade, and its 95 percent purity makes it the only truly hypoallergenic precious metal. When it comes to bridal jewellery, choose your gown first, then the jewellery to complement it. This might consist of a necklace with matching bracelet, or a choker and earrings. While chokers look elegant on brides with long necks, a strand of pearls or a longer chain might better suit a broader neck. Short hair or an up-do lends itself to drop earrings, and a pair of sparkling diamond studs complement any look.

VENUES

TYRONE CROSSMAN

Most couples will agree that finding that perfect wedding venue is one of the most important decisions that needs to be made in the run-up to the big day. VENUES LOCATIONS TO LOVE contd For these reasons, it’s vital that you choose a wedding venue that’s the best fit for you. Once you have an idea of what your budget is, and have identified the date on which you’ll be tying the knot, it’s time to start your search. Luckily, local brides and grooms are spoilt for choice when it comes to appealing locations in our beautiful province. KwaZulu-Natal boasts everything from eco-friendly resorts set in lush coastal forests, to luxurious beachfront manors, grand colonial estates in the picturesque Midlands, luxurious game lodges in ‘Big Five’ country, and sophisticated five-star or boutique hotels in the city, not to mention a variety of resorts and guesthouses in the foothills of the awe-inspiring Drakensberg mountain range. One of these destinations could be home to your special venue, the place where you and your partner celebrate the next chapter in your lives together. VENUE LOGISTICS If only choosing a wedding venue were as easy as simply finding a space that you like. It may not seem terribly romantic right now, but do remember to bear in mind the logistics of a venue as this could save you untold hassles later on. Consider everything from the number of guests the venue will need to cater for, to the time of day and the season, as well as any accommodation your guests might require. You don’t need to know exactly what your guest count is before starting to look at venues, but you do need at least to have a rough idea before you begin – whether you’re planning a relatively intimate gathering of 50, the more standard size of 125, or a grand-scale celebration of 300-plus! The best starting point on your quest is the Internet, as web-based searches instead of phone calls and emails will save you lots of time. Your Wedding Planner has sourced a selection of stunning venues throughout KwaZulu-Natal for you to choose from.

GET MARRIED BETWEEN THE HIPPO’s onboard the ADVANTAGE BOAT in St Lucia

LOCATIONS TO LOVE contd If you plan on having a church wedding, the location of your reception venue will need to be in fairly close proximity to that of the ceremony. However, if you’re content with a civil wedding, this will widen your options greatly. Today many reception venues host both the wedding ceremony and the reception; a practical option which has the added benefit of minimising potential transport complications. Also think about the type of reception you’re planning. You’ll need more space for a formal, sit-down dinner than a cocktail-style affair. And don’t forget the entertainment; a band or DJ will take up lots of room, as will a dance floor! Another prime consideration is your budget. Get a price estimate, including menu and bar prices and corkage fees, and the cost of waiters and bar staff. Some venues offer discounts on accommodation as well as other services if you’re prepared to be flexible. TYPES OF VENUES There are all types of venues out there, but which will be most suitable for your wedding? To help decide, you first need to know the style and feel that you’re aiming for. Would you prefer a quirky, DIY-style wedding, a romantic country-themed celebration, or something with a more sophisticated atmosphere? Once you know what you want – or even what you don’t want – you should be able to rule out some venues immediately. The more fitting your venue is for your chosen theme, the less you’ll have to worry about the décor, which will end up being a huge money-saver.

26 Your Wedding Planner Guide

It’s also important to consider whether you want a full-service venue or not. The former should be able to supply most of your needs, such as tables, chairs, linen and catering, while the latter generally only offers you the space, allowing you the freedom (and the extra work that goes along with it) of hiring and coordinating all the service providers yourself.

VENUES LOCATIONS TO LOVE contd Traditional venues such as hotels and guest houses, which usually have set wedding packages, might be just the thing. Choose anything from an elegant boutique hotel to an upmarket international resort or a charming country inn. Hotels are able to provide in-house food and drink as well as accommodation for the bridal couple and the guests. However, remember that the larger hotels may host more than one wedding on the same day so there could be issues with a lack of exclusivity. Perhaps a golf or country club is just what you’re looking for. Many have beautiful buildings and grounds that are ideal for a wedding reception. Like a hotel, they’re also used to catering for large numbers of guests, particularly if you’re after buffet-style catering. For a smaller wedding party, a restaurant could offer a sure-fire recipe for success, and it’s often the most cost effective venue option. You’re free to do things your way at a home wedding, and could save money by hiring the caterer of your choice and stocking your own bar. It can nevertheless end up being quite costly in the long run once you take all the extras into account, such as cutlery, crockery and linen, tables and chairs, and probably a tent or marquee, lighting, generators, portable toilets and flooring. In addition, you may have to supervise the set-up of equipment, organise parking for the guests, and clean up when it’s all over. There are a number of non-traditional venues to be found, such as art galleries, barns, beaches, boats and hired halls. If you’d prefer something outdoors, KwaZulu-Natal has an immense variety of beautiful spots for you to pitch a tent or marquee, giving you endless flexibility regarding décor and styling. Although romantic and scenic, al fresco weddings can nevertheless be a lot of work to organise. Take into account things like the privacy of your location and competition from the elements, such as sun, heat, rain or insects. Accessibility and parking facilities should also be considered.

VENUES LOCATIONS TO LOVE contd TIMING AND WEATHER When you’ve settled on your short list, and made sure the venues are available on your chosen day, it’s time to pay them a visit. A good tip here is to go and see the venue on the day of the week that you’re planning to get married and, if possible, at around the same time. This way you’ll be able to notice finer details, like the quality of the light and if there are any regular goings-on and routines that might interfere in any way with the smooth running of your special day. And, if you have one, take your wedding coordinator along too, as he or she will be able to cast an experienced eye over the set-up and offer good advice. Also take the weather and the time of year into account when deciding on where to host your reception. Find out whether the venue is air conditioned and/or heated and, in the case of an outdoor wedding, if there’s an alternative space should it suddenly begin to rain. While Durban and the coast enjoy wonderful weather all year round, with glorious, long summer days, there is also the chance of rain and humidity during the warmer months. Conversely, the subtropical coastal areas experience warm and dry winters: even during the coldest months the average maximum temperature rises to 23°C during the day and rarely drops below 10°C at night. In the Drakensberg and KwaZulu-Natal Midlands the weather is much more temperate. Mild winter days are followed by cold nights and the possibility of snow between July and September. During summer the days are warm and generally sunny, although afternoon thundershowers are common. A bushveld wedding in Zululand or the Elephant Coast is usually more pleasant in the cooler months, between May and October, with January being the wettest month as well as having an average daytime temperature of 28ºC compared with the average July temperature of 22ºC.

FUN WEDDINGS in a beautiful surrounding PENWARN COUNTRY LODGE IS LOCATED JUST OUTSIDE UNDERBERG IN THE FOOTHILLS OF SOUTHERN DRAKENSBERG OF SOUTH AFRICA. This country wedding venue specialises in relaxed, fun weddings that incorporate the beautiful surrounding of PENWARN. A wedding at PENWARN will guarantee photos that you will never tire of looking at and memories to treasure forever. WINES WITH A SENSE OF PLACE The Central Drakensberg in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa is one of the most beautiful places in the world. The peaks of Cathedral, Cathkin, Dragon Peaks, and Champagne Castle jut out from the plateau ridge over 12,000 ft into the air. The plateau edge falls away in a sheer drop onto an undulating hillside. Here the fertile soils are dotted by the colors of the ripening crops under the centre pivots.

“With such a climate and such a unique environment it was destined to produce wines of distinction.

multiple venues that can be used singly or in

The climate here has unique characteristics. The air is clean, crisp and fresh to breathe. The sheerness of the mountain allows heat to rise up against the warm cliffs during the day and cooler air to feed down at night. The winter sees snow on the tops that feed the crystal clear mountain streams. In the valley the winter days are mild enough to go for a walk but winter nights are suited to log fires, companionship and a glass of wine. The soil is deep and fertile and the land is gently undulating. With steady summer rainfall, nature responds with vigour. We farm here and we have a passion for it. In 2008, we decided to take this passion for farming and blend it with our passion for wine, and as a result we planted some vineyards. With such a climate, in such a unique environment, it was sure that we would find a way to make wines of distinction. Nothing less

VENUES LOCATIONS IN KWAZULU-NATAL The seaside playground of KwaZulu-Natal is bounded by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean to the east and the Drakensberg to the west. In between beach and ‘berg lie the Midlands, while further north there are historic battlefields and world-renowned game reserves. East meets west in the cosmopolitan city and tourist capital of Durban, the cultural melting pot of the Zulu Kingdom. Durban, or ‘eThekwini’ as it is also known, boasts colourful markets, oriental bazaars and modern shopping malls, golden beaches and water sports, as well as top-class hotels, restaurants and casinos, and attractions such as the Botanical Gardens, uShaka Marine World and Valley of 1000 Hills. Some forty minutes northwest of Durban is the town of Pietermaritzburg, beyond which are the green hills of the Midlands, where the crisp climate and crystal clear air offer a refreshing respite from the coastal humidity. Venture further inland to witness one of the great natural spectacles of the African continent, the uKhahlamba Drakensberg mountain range, which extends some 200 kilometres from north to south, rising to heights of over 3 400 metres. The tropical paradise of the South Coast, which stretches from Port Edward up to Scottburgh, and includes the holiday towns of Margate, Southbroom and Pennington, is known for its beaches and golf courses, annual Sardine Run, and Oribi Gorge nature reserve. From Durban, a sun-drenched coastline extends through the North Coast’s premier holiday resorts of Umhlanga, Ballito and Zinkwazi, and along the unspoilt Elephant Coast to Sodwana and Kosi Bay in the north. This is the site of the iSimangaliso Wetlands Park, a marine treasure trove and World Heritage Site with whales, dolphins, turtles, elephants and rhinos.

Travelling inland through indigenous coastal forests and thornveld plains teeming with wildlife are the famed game reserves of Zululand, including the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Reserve, which was once the hunting ground of Zulu kings like Shaka and Dingiswayo. Zululand and the Battlefields area of northern KwaZulu-Natal was also the site of military conflicts between British, Boer and Zulu armies. These areas encompass the towns of Ulundi, Melmoth and Eshowe, Vryheid, Utrecht, Dundee and Ladysmith, and legendary battles such as Isandlwana, Rorke’s Drift and Spioenkop. DESTINATION WEDDINGS Another option is the destination wedding. With the exception of the venue’s online photo gallery and a ‘virtual tour’, you probably won’t be able to scope out the location and grounds yourself before you get there. While some brides might find this a bit unnerving, remember that destination weddings can produce some of the most relaxed and funfilled celebrations, provided you ask the right questions and find out the finer details beforehand. When you contact the venue, ask whether they have a dedicated wedding planner on site who you can liaise with via email. This will make the logistics of planning your wedding much easier! Also establish exactly what services the wedding coordinator will provide, and whether there is a fee. Find out what reception and ceremony areas are available, how many guests each can accommodate, and whether they are airconditioned. Also ask the manager to email you a layout of each, including pictures. If you’d like to have a wedding on the beach, will this be possible? If travelling outside South Africa, it’s also vital that you find out what the legal obligations are for a wedding in your destination of choice, and what paperwork is required.

The Bend Country House & Nature Estate With mature gardens, old-English farm buildings dating from the 1920’s and a gracious homestead filled with period furniture, The Bend has hosted memorable weddings since 1994. Hold your reception for up to 150 guests in the converted milking parlour, fully draped and with exposed rafters. More intimate functions are hosted in the elegant diningroom. A rustic venue with a safari theme will be inaugurated in May 2016. The garden can accommodate marquees for larger weddings. Picture a service under ancient pine trees with the Mooi River running quietly beside you. We do have a chapel to cope with inclement weather. We have an “al fresco” braai area with a firepit for great pre-wedding parties.

The Bend is child friendly and we provide baby-sitters. Activities such as flyfishing, tubing on the Mooi and spectacular walks will enhance the country experience. With 16 luxury hotel rooms, 4 self-catering cottages and others close by, up to 150 people can be accommodated in the area.

The Reception room dates from the 1920’s. It was converted from the old Milking Parlour and we have tried to retain the ambience of the space. The beautiful rafters add character to the interior and we have tried to enhance rather than alter the building. We have a bar with perhaps the most unusual bar counter in the Natal Midlands – an 80 year old section from one of the Tibetan cypresses on the river bank!. The atmosphere is warm and relaxed and we have hosted many happy and memorable weddings. Adjoining the Reception Room is a charming Stone Chapel with the capacity of up to 150 wedding guests.

The 1400 Hectare Estate provides many beautiful photographic opportunities including the banks of the river, a slave bell, horse paddocks, old farm buildings and a mature garden. PHOTOGRAPHY Reportage style photography has been popular for some time, but now with the rise of social media and the likes of Instagram, the wedding photo is poised to break new barriers! And while some brides might ask guests to check their selfie sticks at the door, others are embracing the trend, creating hashtags for their big day and requesting that guests upload their photos and statuses, or even providing special selfie stations and charging points for smartphones! CHOOSING A PHOTOGRAPHER When it comes to choosing a photographer, remember that the top ones will be booked well in advance, so do your homework, and do it in good time. Your Wedding Planner showcases a selection of excellent photographers. Please browse through their adverts and visit their websites and online galleries to get an idea of the different photographic styles, such as high fashion, intimate or informal, and determine what will suit your wedding vision. You might prefer fairly formal wedding photos, or something more natural and spontaneous ... or perhaps a combination of the two! Compile a shortlist of likely photographers, and find out if they’ll be free on your wedding day as well as whether the packages they offer are in your price range. Once you’ve done this you can meet the photographer in person to discuss the finer details before signing on the dotted line. Meeting a prospective photographer is also important if you want to get a sense of their personality. Maintaining a clear path of communication between yourselves and your chosen wedding photographer is essential and will ensure that expectations and are met. You needs to feel comfortable entrusting them with the important role of documenting your wedding day.

PHOTOGRAPHY TAKE YOUR BEST SHOT contd Ideally, your photographer should spend time explaining what exactly will be expected of you on the day of the wedding and what you can expect from him or her in the days following the wedding. CAPTURING THE MOMENT Brides generally like their photographer to take the initiative and to have a prepared list of poses that include portrait shots as well as whimsical, fun poses. A knowledgeable photographer will understand how best to capture those special moments that become classic wedding shots. These might include the bride and groom exchanging rings, dancing cheekto-cheek and cutting the cake, the toasts and speeches, the hugs, kisses and laughter of family and friends – images which will remain long after the bridal bouquet has been thrown and the wedding gown packed away. Provide your photographer with a checklist of scenes to be captured, such as the bride with her parents prior to the wedding, as well as key family members to include in the shots, and any particular items of décor that you would like photographed. Determine what your photographer’s standard package comprises. A budget option might cover the ceremony and formal group shots with a less experienced photographer, while a more comprehensive package could include pre-wedding shots and coverage of the ceremony and reception with two photographers, as well as an album and some retouching.

PHOTOGRAPHY TAKE YOUR BEST SHOT contd Decide from the outset whether you’d like lots of posed, formal photographs, or if you’d rather simply relax and enjoy this magical day while your photographer works in the background to record events as they unfold. You might like to set up a bridal portrait session before the wedding or even an engagement shoot, which is very popular these days. This will give you time to become better acquainted with your photographer and get used to how they operate. In addition to producing some great photos, it will allow you to feel more relaxed during the big-day photo shoot, resulting in more natural looking wedding photographs. Some brides are even having the portrait photos taken just before the ceremony to ensure they look their very best! Essential questions to ask your photographer include: ·

Will you stay for a set number of hours on the day?

·

What will you charge for overtime?

·

Are travelling expenses included in the fee?

·

How many pictures will you take?

·

Will you visit the venue beforehand?

·

Who will fill in for you if you’re sick?

·

Do you have backup equipment?

·

How long will we wait for our photographs?

Hiring a Photo Booth can also add something special to your wedding day and keep your guests entertained for hours. Photo Booths allow guests to capture fun, crazy and special moments and also have a souvenir of the day to take home.

STATIONERY

STEPHEN RAILTON

Stationery needs to be chosen with the theme and style of the wedding in mind, be it romantic, rustic, modern or traditional. Once you have an idea of the type of celebration you’re having, start looking at examples of stationery in bridal magazines and on stationery websites. In addition to setting the tone for what’s to come, the wedding invitation should relay basic information such as location, date, time of day, and RSPV details. Wording tends to be less formal than in days gone by, with many couples deciding that something personal and heart-felt works best. Silver and gold accents on wedding stationery are very popular right now, as is blind embossing, which comprises raised typography in the same colour as the paper. Custom-made invitations will create a lasting impression. Even if you don’t have the budget to go the whole hog, you could modify this trend by including details on your invitations such as hand lettering. Themes from nature remain favourites, and include lots of greenery, woodland and mountain motifs, as well as flora and wildlife. Colours are becoming more intense, with washed-out pastels being replaced by much bolder palettes that incorporate forest green, peach, gold, and royal blue. While it’s good to be quirky and creative, experts caution against using too much colour. Balance bright hues with grounded neutrals, and make sure guests are able to read the text. Modern couples might prefer to go the paperless route and issue wedding e-vites or use wedding apps and social networks to spread the word about their upcoming nuptials. However, remember that not all your relatives may be up-to-date with the latest technology, so you’ll probably need to send out traditional invites as well.

CO-ORDINATORS CO-ORDINATORS Contd Traditionally, the mother of the bride and chief bridesmaid are the first port of call when assistance is required. However, modern weddings tend to be quite complex affairs, in addition to which many of these erstwhile wedding helpers are very busy themselves, and may not have as much time as they’d like to take on a host of new tasks. Countdown calendars are useful here as they help you to pace yourself and tackle planning and dÊcor details one at a time (see our handy guide on Page 6). LEMONTREE CONCEPTS

CO-ORDINATORS CO-ORDINATORS Contd Despite having all these tools at their disposal, many brides find that nothing beats the services of a professional wedding planner. A coordinator brings with them a wealth of knowledge – what’s hot in wedding themes, who’s who in the wedding industry, where to find the ideal venue, and how to get you the best possible deals. In the end, you’ll need to weigh up how much your time is worth and whether or not you have enough know-how to plan such an intricate event. At the very least, think about hiring a coordinator to take care of the wedding day itself, leaving you free to savour the moment. While a number of venues provide in-house managers, do find out exactly what they are able to offer you. Most will only take care of specific wedding-day issues and give you a list of their preferred service providers, so hiring your own dedicated wedding coordinator is most likely still a good idea. At the outset you might think that hiring a coordinator is simply an additional expense; however, remember that in the long run they are often able to save you money. FUNCTIONS FOR AFRICA

DECOR / HIRE MAGICAL CREATIONS Contd These days, eclectic styles are in vogue, so you don’t necessarily have to colour coordinate your bridesmaids’ dresses with the table napkins and the floral arrangement. Just about anything goes, giving you the freedom to mix and match … and have some fun! Some of the upcoming trends for 2016 include geometric and graphic shapes and patterns, which can be introduced via angular table plans, tableware and vases. This modern look is especially good with the new wave of metallics which are being seen in wedding décor. Branding is an understated yet elegant way to put a special stamp on your wedding, and might consist of custom-designed monograms or duograms on the tableware and stationery. The Bohemian style remains a favourite. Neutral colour combinations such as cream and coffee would work beautifully with organic elements like marble, bleached wood and warm metallics. The concept of bringing the outdoors inside, using lots of greenery and wildflowers, is also hugely popular. You could also look to the seasons for inspiration. Spring suggests fresh and fabulous pastels, and summer’s lush vegetation and abundant blooms might prompt tropical or beach themes infused with bold, dramatic hues. While coastal winters are pleasantly cool and dry, the colder weather inland could inspire a romantic highland theme with roaring log fires, candle-lit tables and soaring mountain scenery. This is also the perfect time for a bushveld wedding; either colonial elegance or eco-experience. One of the best décor ideas is to pick a fabulous location, where you won’t have to add too much to make the space gorgeous. A charming country hotel or themed restaurant will be easier to decorate than a plain function room or marquee. Then, you’ll need to check how much of the décor your venue is able to supply, and how much you’ll have to hire. These days, professional hiring companies supply an amazing array of stylish furnishings and themed décor. COLOUR SCHEMES Monochromatic schemes are always elegant, so you could choose different tones of the same colour, or pick a colour you love, and team it with neutral shades. Different themes lend themselves to different colour schemes: a garden wedding might feature delicate florals and pastels against a lush green backdrop, while a vintage wedding could incorporate period prints and bold colours offset with silver or gold detailing, not to mention a sprinkling of 1930s era glamour.

‘Country chic’ décor calls for the crisp pastel shades of blue, green or yellow, with feature details such as apple crates, antique tablecloths and mismatched china. The seaside is another classic look, lending itself to pale blue or turquoise paired with neutrals such as sand, gold, silver or chalky pink. Alternatively, make your reception into a celebration of colour with décor trends such as origami flowers, paper lanterns and pom-poms, festoon lighting and swags of streamers. Pantone’s 2016 wedding colours incorporate more vivid shades than in years gone by. Expect bright pastels to be teamed with bolder feature colours. Some of the top shades include Fiesta, Rose Quartz, Peach Echo, Iced Coffee and Lilac Grey. There’s also Snorkel Blue, which is 2016’s more vibrant version of Navy, as well as the soothing sky blue of ‘Serenity’. WEDDING FAVOURS Prettily packaged wedding favours are a lovely way to thank your guests for sharing this special day with you. Edible favours are always extremely popular, and include things like liqueur-filled truffles, mini jars of local produce, such as jam, honey or olives, or cookies and cupcakes. The personal touch is key, like luggage tags inscribed with individual messages, attached to favours wrapped in hand-printed paper.

BRIDALWEAR ALL DRESSED UP Contd Bridal fashions seen on the runways point towards some clear trends for 2016. After the blues and silvers which were seen so prominently during 2015, the warm shades of cream, ivory, gold and blush are now taking centre stage. What’s more, a number of new looks are revolutionising summer bridal wear, with the bridal jumpsuit, cocktail dress and skirt and crop top combo representing the perfect marriage of fun and glamour. The more traditional bride will welcome a return to the vintage Victorian gown, where the fullness of hoop skirts has been recreated through voluminous tiers of silk, lace and tulle. The fairy-tale theme is given added emphasis in gowns sporting fringes, fluttery sleeves and layers of organza, tulle and feathers for a magical and ethereal effect that’s perfect for romantic brides. Using floral appliqué to achieve three-dimensional detail on collars, sleeves and skirts is another favourite design feature which is adding texture to bridal silhouettes.

At the other end of the scale, designers are pushing the boundaries of bridal decorum with keyhole and deeply plunging V necklines, thighhigh slit skirts and all manner of see-though garments, from ultra-fine netting and tulle to daringly sheer lace gowns over skin-toned lining. Short bridal dresses, some sleeveless and others with side cut-outs, are also making a bold style statement. In addition to the ever-popular floral motif, embroidered wave patterns are becoming a hot new trend. CHOOSING A BRIDAL GOWN Have an idea of what you’re looking for before setting out on your bridal gown quest! Then determine how much you have to spend so as not to waste time trying on dresses that are out of your price range. Things to bear in mind include the season and time of day you’re getting married, the ceremony and reception venues, and styles that flatter your figure. Begin the search early, especially if you’re not buying off the peg, as getting a gown custom-made by a designer can take around six to eight months, and even alterations to a ready-made dress can take a month or two. When you begin visiting bridal stores, keep an open mind and listen to the consultant’s advice. Although an outfit may have no ‘hanger appeal’, it could look very different when you try it on. You might like one that draws attention to your best feature (for example, your shoulders, arms or waist) while de-emphasising those aspects that you find less desirable. Don’t leave shopping to a busy weekend. Rather take a morning off work to take advantage of a quieter store and more of the salesperson’s time. It’s preferable not to bring too many people with you as all the opinions may well end up being too distracting and confusing. It’s also wise to be realistic. Buy the dress that fits you comfortably now, not something that will only be right once you shed that last five kilograms you’ve been aiming to lose since last Spring!

Your Wedding Planner Guide

90 91

BRIDALWEAR Think you’ve found the one? Those in the know suggest taking photographs of the dresses you try on; not just from the front, but from a variety of angles to get the total effect. Also look at how the fabric appears in photographs: some fabrics, while appearing gorgeous to the naked eye, may look a lot different in your wedding album. MOTHERS OF THE BRIDE AND GROOM Weddings are special occasions, not just for the bride and groom, but for their mothers and grandmothers too! According to custom, the mother of the bride is the first to choose a dress, with the mother of the groom expected to follow her lead with a dress of similar length, colour and style. While formal or evening weddings generally call for the sophistication of a floor-length dress, current fashions are seeing shorter silhouettes, with a chic one-piece ideal for semi-formal as well as informal weddings. The look is versatile, and can be dressed up with gorgeous jewellery, heels, an elegant cover-up or beaded bag. On-trend dress details include beautifully jewelled and embroidered necklines, as well as illusion necklines which are wonderfully flattering and able to give just the right amount of cover. Versatile, comfortable and stylish, the jacket dress is another firm favourite as while the coordinating jacket provides coverage it can also be removed to reveal the beautiful dress underneath. A two-piece or mock two-piece can be fitted to accommodate varied proportions, and is excellent for concealing the tummy area and shaping the waist. Colours should complement those of the bridal attendants. While there are colour charts available online to help you identify suitable shades based on the colours being worn by the bridesmaids, there really are some colours which seem to go with everything! If in doubt, shades like mocha, bronze, taupe, champagne, putty, silver and charcoal, or even navy blue, tend to be sure-fire winners.

HAIR & BEAUTY TIMELESS BEAUTY Contd The make-up and hairstyle you choose should complement your wedding dress and your overall theme. Bridal beauty trends for 2016 highlight features such as smoky eyes, fresh, dewy skin, and soft pink hues for lips and cheeks, while hairstyles include sleek chignons, Bohemian braids and loosely structured up-dos with loads of volume. GOOD TO GLOW If you’ve decided to do your own make-up, there are a few tricks of the trade you should learn. Apply products in natural light if possible, and remember to blend your foundation and blusher well, as the camera will show up any lines. Sweep some bronzing powder across your chest and neck so your face doesn’t look a different colour to the rest of your body. Don’t use foundation too near your gown’s neckline as it could end up staining the dress. Opt for waterproof mascara and navy blue or charcoal eyeliner. Choose a bright lip colour, handy powder compact and mirror, and carry it with you on the day in case you need a touch-up. In 2016, brides are letting their natural beauty shine through with minimalist make-up such as tinted moisturiser, earth-toned eyeliner, a flick of mascara, pink or nude lips, and a light sweep of bronzer or blush. The ‘English Rose’, which calls for pale foundation, delicately lined eyes, rosy cheeks and softly tinted lips, is back in vogue. You can give this look a modern twist with bold eyebrows à la Cara Delevingne. Frosted lipstick is another favourite; especially shades of shimmering pinks and metallic. STYLISH HAIR AND ACCESSORIES Wear thick hair up or down, flaunting your luxuriant locks by twisting them into a semi up-do, or opting for a wildly romantic look with long, flowing waves and small braids, loosely pinned back. Alternatively, go for one classic French plait or fishtail braid, decorated with stars, beads or pearls. The timeless chignon is the preferred up-do for glamour and sophistication. Prima ballerina style buns are both pretty and elegant, and look good with floral crowns or jewelled circlets. Wear a more modern version of this style by adding an asymmetrical element or leaving layers of hair loose in the front to frame your face.

Foliage is also a key trend in 2016, especially in the case of rustic weddings, where greenery abounds in leafy bouquets and table garlands. Elements such as sweet-scented herbs, acorns and fruit add texture and fragrance, while feathers, twigs and slices of wood could be used to create a Bohemian ambiance. Warm metallic accents are another hot favourite, and while gold and silver remain classics, copper is growing in popularity. Brides are advised to opt for flowers that are in season, taking into account features such as colour, perfume, foliage, texture and durability. The current trend encompasses multiple floral experiences, with different looks for each aspect of the wedding, from the ceremony to the reception. BOUQUETS AND BUTTONHOLES The design of your bridal bouquet should complement your wedding gown and theme. Contemporary colour schemes may be monochromatic or display shaded tones of the same colour. The untamed, organic flow of the cascade bouquet is back in style, and might comprise a lovely ensemble of roses, tulips and ranunculas, or a luscious combination of avalanche roses, brunia, echeveria, peonies, astrantia and hydrangeas. Either go for subtle colours with lots of greenery, or stand out with vivid hues and metallic accents. While the bouquet will set the theme for attendants’ flowers, these days your bridesmaids are free to personalise their blooms. Understated yet undeniably romantic, the ring corsage is gaining popularity. Flower girls could wear flowers in their hair or hold a foliage wand or a simple bunch of flowers. Instead of the ubiquitous floral buttonhole, grooms might choose to add unusual elements such as ferns, moss and herbs, or opt for unconventional materials such as paper, felt or fabric flowers with crystals and beads. ARRANGEMENTS Greenery is everywhere at the reception, with garlands made up of varieties of ivy or ferns combined with lemon leaf and herbs like mint and rosemary. Use these as table runners and chair swags, or string across archways, wind around pillars and hang from the ceilings. Table centrepieces could consist of simple bunches of meadow flowers, extravagant arrangements on candelabra stands, or a single dramatic bloom in a vintage vase. Use colourful bottles and jam jars, silver jugs and china teapots instead of traditional vases to achieve the popular rustic look.

CAKES & CATERING

SEAN BAKER

After the all-important bridal gown, the catering is one of the most important ingredients for a memorable wedding. There are two options here: find a reception venue that has excellent food, or locate one that will let you bring in the caterer of your choice.

CAKES & CATERING The chief factors to bear in mind when looking for a caterer are: quality of food, level of service, and ability to deliver on the finer details. You need to find someone who listens to you and understands what you consider most important. At the same time, you also need a caterer with the experience to be able to take your ideas and create a winning wedding day formula! Start looking for a caterer at least nine months prior to your wedding. Ask your venue whether they have a list of preferred suppliers; consider your options, find out who’s available on your chosen date, and arrange a meeting. Look at their portfolio, enquire as to whether they have adequate facilities and are backed by a professional team, and find out where they source their produce. Ask whether they are able to meet specific menu requirements, such as Halaal, Kosher or vegetarian. If your budget is limited, let your caterer know what it is so they’re able to work out a package to suit your needs. Check whether things like VAT, tableware and linen are included in the price, and when the deposit and final payment is required. Organising a tasting is also a good idea as this lets you sample the food and assess presentation first-hand. ON THE MENU With in-house catering, the typical choices are either a buffet or seated dinner. Using an independent caterer tends to give you much greater flexibility. Tasting stations are very popular as they allow your guests to sample an assortment of party food. While Italian and Greek delicacies are always favourites, so too are Middle Eastern dishes from regions like Morocco, Turkey and Israel. Spicy food is a ‘hot’ choice, and includes Korean and Latin American inspired menus. And how about your very own sushi bar complete with a sushi chef?

Whatever your final choice, try to ensure that the menu features a wide range of different tastes, satisfying your personal preferences as well as providing guests with food that they’re comfortable with. Look for menus that work well with the time of year; for example, light, fresh dishes in spring and summer and heartier, more robust meals in autumn and winter. Another idea is to put a menu together that reflects the different backgrounds of the bride and groom, or particular dishes that are of special significance to them, with family-style food very big news right now. In addition to (and sometimes instead of) a wedding cake, some couples are now opting for a decadent dessert table with pies, éclairs, truffles and tarts. Dessert stations might comprise milkshake or gelato bars, custom-made crepes or a decadent chocolate fondue, while plated desserts could include exciting flavour combinations such as apricot and basil or salted caramel. THE WEDDING CAKE The traditional wedding cake is a large, multi-layered or tiered affair made from a heavy fruit mix and decorated with icing (often over a layer of marzipan) or fondant. These days, however, anything goes! A naked cake dusted with icing sugar and berries is perfect for a rustic wedding, while a delicious coffee-flavoured creation would suit a morning wedding, and a rich and sophisticated chocolate cake with an orange flavour accent would do well for a formal affair. Flavours can also be chosen according to the season; for example, a light lemon cake in summer and a creamy mocha, praline or fruit cake in winter. The textured look is very on-trend, and includes cakes patterned with lace, pleats and ruffles, feather or flower details. While pink is still a favoured colour, shining metallics – seen in Baroque-style cakes gleaming with golden frosting – are the latest word in wedding fashion. Bright and bold floral motifs are also very contemporary, and organic floral designs comprising climbing vines and flowers are one of the forecast trends for 2016. LIQUID REFRESHMENTS Guests are traditionally given a drink or arrival, such as a glass of rum punch, champagne or a Pimms cocktail. There should be both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages available. At the table, it is standard to provide white and red wine (usually a 50-50 split, although this depends on the season and time of day), as well as still and sparkling water, and a bottle of champagne or sparkling wine for toasts. Prosecco or pink champagne is a favourite, as are champagne cocktails infused with fruit purées or liqueurs such as Aperol or crème de cassis. Beverage stations could offer anything from craft beers to signature cocktails, sangria or flavoured lemonades. While an open bar will take up approximately 15 percent of the total wedding budget, this figure could drop to as little as 5 percent if you’re limiting drinks to beer and wine, or supplying alcohol and other beverages yourself. If opting for a cash bar, it’s still a good idea to put a set amount towards wine and beer, and include a complimentary welcome drink. Two bartenders and three servers are recommended for every 120 guests.

MUSIC

SEAN BAKER

Music helps to create the mood of your big day, so it’s important that that you choose the right accompaniment to each stage of the wedding; from the inspiring compositions of the ceremony, to the background melodies of the reception, the emotion of the first dance, and the entertainment of a live band or DJ. At the ceremony, consider the sounds of an uplifting soloist or the grace and elegance of a string quartet. For background music at the reception, it’s a good idea to put together a wedding mix with the songs that best capture your relationship. The compilation could include the music that has been the most important to you in the course of your relationship, as well as lyrics which best articulate what you mean to one-another. Perhaps think of it as the soundtrack to the story of your romance. Remember to find out whether there are any noise restrictions which apply to your venue of choice. If opting for a DJ instead of a musician, find a professional who is technically proficient, has an excellent knowledge of music and a good selection of different music genres. Find out what their specialty is and if they are familiar with your favourite style of music.

TRANSPORT

SEAN BAKER

These days, the bridal couple and their entourage are spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting transport for the wedding. Consider an elegant chauffeur-driven stretch limousine, Rolls-Royce Phantom or Bentley, or even a luxury people carrier like the Mercedes Viano. A classic 4x4 like a Range Rover or Jeep would be perfect for an out-ofAfrica scenario, while a sporty Ford Mustang, a snappy Mini Cooper, or even a vintage VW Beetle might better suit a more modern or quirky theme.

Helicopter flights and charters around the Drakensberg Mountains

For a lake or seaside celebration, you could make a grand entrance by speedboat or yacht, or go for a more casual option like a canoe or rowing boat if your theme is rustic. Other unique choices include golf carts, Vespas and tandem bikes, not to mention the fairy-tale favourite … the horse-drawn carriage! The top tip for a fool-proof wedding day transport plan is to map out every detail of your schedule well in advance. Think about where your hair and make-up are being done, the venue for pre and post-ceremony photo shoots, and the distance to the reception site, estimating how much time you’ll need for each event. Factor a little leeway into your timeline to make room for any possible speed bumps or detours (both literal and metaphorical!) along the way. Book transport several months beforehand, and have vehicles checked to ensure a smooth and stress-free drive on the day. Remember to include bridesmaids, groomsmen and the bride’s parents when calculating how many vehicles you’ll need.

HONEYMOON WANDERLUST Contd If you’re choosing an exotic location, make sure it’s not too remote … unless of course you have loads of time on your hands and don’t mind long-haul flights. After you’ve factored all the travelling time into the equation, not to mention the associated jet lag, it might well be better to choose some place closer to home. Your budget is another important factor. Does it allow for a multidestination European tour, a weekend at a wine farm, or somewhere in between? If strapped for cash or time, why not take a ‘mini-moon’ and save up for a real honeymoon later on? Another option is the ‘twinimoon’, which sees newlyweds enjoying the best of both worlds by including two different holiday hotspots. Remember that some credit cards and medical aid schemes offer airline miles which you can put towards your honeymoon. And when booking a destination do let them know that you’re going to be travelling as newlyweds. There are lots of resorts offering budget deals, upgrades and other extras to honeymoon couples. HONEYMOON LOCATIONS According to Vogue Australia, top celebrity honeymoon destinations for 2016 include the beach resorts of Tahiti, Mexico and the Seychelles, or classic choices such as an Irish manor house or a Tanzanian safari. There are also stunning locations closer to home, such as a mountain retreat in the Drakensberg, a beach holiday at Kosi Bay or a bush break at one of KwaZulu-Natal’s world-class game reserves. Consider looking for eco-tourism destinations which promote responsible travel that safeguards the environment while improving the wellbeing of indigenous populations. You’ll find a comprehensive list of resources,

from participating organisations to top eco-destinations, on the website of the International Ecotourism Society: http://www.ecotourism.org. South Africa is a popular and affordable destination for overseas couples as well, with many international travel and tourism agents offering romantic honeymoon packages to our magnificent wilderness areas. This might include a safari expedition in the Kruger National Park, or an urban adventure in the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town. An all-inclusive holiday is a great idea. If you’ve already paid for everything upfront you’ll be able to relax without having to worry about the price of everything. Just be sure to check what’s included; for example, local beverages might be part of the deal, but not imported drinks such as wine. Unless you’ve specifically asked for cash donations as an alternative to items on the wedding registry, don’t count on receiving monetary contributions towards your honeymoon. If you do, let those amounts rather pay for an extra excursion or dinner in a five-star restaurant. TRAVEL ADVICE Those in the know suggest using a travel agent. The service won’t cost you any extra, and having someone else to take care of all the booking arrangements will give you less to worry about in the days leading up to the wedding. In addition, if anything does end up going wrong, you’ll have someone to call. If you’re travelling outside the country, check that your passport is up-to-date and organise visas, if required, and travel insurance. Many countries now require passports to be valid for six months from the date of entry. If you’re traveling to an exotic destination, it’s best to find out from your doctor whether vaccinations will be required. Sort out your foreign exchange needs, such as credit cards, prepaid travel cards and cash. Prior to departure, be sure to put your mobile phone on international roaming (limiting this to text messages is more affordable), pack an overseas adaptor, and don’t forget the chargers for your phone and camera. Put nametags on all items of luggage, and don’t leave home without your e-ticket and itinerary. Make photocopies of all cards and travel documents, vaccination certificates, prescriptions, medical aid cards and medical or trip insurance documents. In addition, leave contact numbers and copies of your itinerary, wills and life insurance documents with a friend or relative. Alternatively, you could store copies of documents on your smartphone, or access copies via Google Docs from anywhere in the world. Even if you’ve booked an all-inclusive vacation, covering accommodation, all meals, drinks, activities and transfers, take more money with you than you think you’ll need. There’s nothing worse than wanting to book a special tour or spa treatment only to discover your credit card has reached its limit or you’ve run out of cash. It’s better not to book an early departure if you’re leaving the morning after the wedding. If there’s absolutely no alternative, then try to pack your suitcase a few days before you leave. Once you’ve made sure that you have essentials such as passports, currency, cameras, phones and medication safely stowed away, don’t stress too much about forgetting one or two items … most destinations will be able to provide you with basics such as toothbrushes and suntan lotion!

This, combined with world renowned and pristine beaches, sapphire seas and perpetual summer temperatures make Seychelles the ultimate haven of relaxation, adventure and renewal of mind, spirit and body. LOCAL ATTRACTIONS The islands of Seychelles are dotted with sites of great natural beauty and interest. Victoria, the capital of Mahé Island, is one of the tiniest capitals in the world and boasts a bustling local market, two cathedrals, an Indian temple, Botanical Gardens and two interesting museums: the Museum of Natural History and the National Museum of History housed in the national library which provide an excellent introduction to Seychelles’ history as both a French and British colony. The other main islands of Praslin and la Digue offer world-class beaches to enjoy. Visit La Digue, where time stands still and bicycles and the ox-cart hold sway on the pathways to dream beaches such as Anse Source D’Argent. On Praslin, enjoy a stroll in the Vallée de Mai where the legendary Coco-de-mer nut grows high on ancient palms. There are many other more remote islands to explore, so be sure to make time for island hopping either by boat, helicopter or plane. 118 Your Wedding Planner Guide

TOURS Seychelles natural beauty can be discovered at any number of scenic viewing spots throughout the islands, where the mountain roads offer excellent panoramas of the sapphire ocean and virgin forests. Major tour operators offer excursions on full day or half-day basis and will include a Creole barbecue lunch. Prices and schedules are available from individual tour companies. Bus trips with guides include a trip to the capital of Victoria, including the colourful market, souvenir stalls and the Botanical Gardens at Mont Fleuri. Excursions usually include the viewpoint at Mission Lodge at Sans Soucis, high in the mountains above Victoria offering breathtaking views of the island and a lodge where the Queen of England once sat and sipped tea. The Tea Plantation itself is at Morne Blanc, a few kilometres further along the mountain road, and visitors can taste the assortment of flavoured teas produced at the small tea factory on site at the Tea Tavern. A trip to the beach at Port Launay for swimming and snorkelling is also included in some excursions. Tours south of Mahé usually include the Cap Lazare craft village, the stunning beaches at Intendance or Anse Soleil, plus the studios and house of the renowned British artist, Michael

Adams at Anse aux Poules Bleues, or the studio of sculptor Tom Bowers at Santa Maria. Tours of the east coast of Mahé, take in the splendid Jardin du Roi fruit and spice gardens, the photogenic Fairyland beach at Anse Royale, as well as the Craft Village and Plantation House at Le Cap. ACCOMMODATION Accommodation on the Islands range from the more opulent amenities of world-famous 5-star resorts to the picturesque charm of affordable, smaller hotels, Creole guest houses and selfcatering units - making a Seychelles holiday accessible in terms of budget, authentic in terms of the diversity of experiences it offers... and the adventure of a lifetime. As an alternative to land-based accommodation, charter a yacht and take a leisurely cruise around the islands. The Seychelles Secrets portfolio of hotels illustrates perfectly Seychelles’ particular brand of tourism with a range of accommodation that proposes island-style living at its best in establishments that have been especially vetted to provide an enticing blend of excellent facilities and value for money, offering true Creole hospitality in picturesque surrounds that are characteristic of the islands’ legendary natural beauty. CULTURE The Creole Language is spoken by everyone and is an adaptation of 17th Century French, African languages and Malagasises. It has been elevated to national language status, earning the same respect that English and French receive and today Creole is a written language as well as spoken. Such freedom has resulted in an outburst of creativity in plays, poetry and prose. The Creole culture is today a major attraction for worldwide visitors who want to experience a unique way of life.

Creole architecture is another important cultural aspect of the islands. The traditional designs of some of the grand old houses with their steep roofs and many openings to catch the island breezes, have been assimilated into modern architecture, ensuring comfortable living in the tropics. Traditional music and dance such as the sega, with its tantalising hip swaying movements to the pulsating sounds of drums, fiddles or guitars is found in Seychelles, as on other islands. But the dance and music most unique to Seychelles is the moutia - a dance seen by the old colonial authorities as so sexually brazen that it was banned. After a week of hard labour on the plantations, the workers would gather under the coconut palms and dance to the sound of the moutia drums. Other African looking instruments also make up the musical heritage of the Seychellois sound: the one stringed zez from Madagascar, the bonm and the kaskavel. All were played during the long warm starlit evenings on verandas or alongside beach fires. DINING Kreol Cuisine has its origins in the racially mixed Seychellois. From India comes many varieties of curry; from China comes popular rice dishes and stir-fried vegetables and noodles with steamed fish, and from France the aromatic blends of garlic and herbs. All these influences, mixed with a huge selection of seafood plucked out of the Indian Ocean and a variety of tropical fruits and vegetables make eating out in Seychelles a culinary delight. Local delicacies include kari zourit (a creamy octopus curry) and tec tec soup (a small white shellfish collected from the beaches and made into a soup usually with pumpkin).

Local cuisine is on offer at several charming restaurants, often in romantic settings which feature Creole culinary traditions and popular international specialities. Most hotels offer a fine combination of international and Creole dishes on their menu. Be sure to frequent some of the many restaurants that specialise in Creole dishes on Mahé, Praslin and La Digue, where you can dine tête à tête with your feet in the sand on uncrowded beaches. FESTIVALS AND EVENTS Diary dates not to be missed by locals and visitors alike include the annual Kreol Festival in October, a vibrant celebration of traditional culture music, dance, arts, crafts, cuisine, customs and the general way of island life. The annual Carnaval International de Victoria, due to be held in April 2016. A fascinating week full of the colours, sounds, flavours and fragrances of a corner of the Creole world that treasures its traditions while embracing the opportunities of the present. WEDDINGS AND HONEYMOONS Seychelles has long been dubbed ‘the islands of love’. Home to the unique Vallée de Mai purported by many to be the site of the original Garden of Eden, it is little wonder that lovers are inspired to take their vows and wed in this gentle and romantic atmosphere. Marriage and/or honeymoon packages are offered by several leading travel agencies ensuring that your wedding day or honeymoon can be as blissfully romantic and unique as you in your wildest dreams can conjure, and that the memories of those special days will become forever emblazoned in your hearts. LEGAL The Customary Marriages Act provides for the civil registration of marriages solemnised according to tribal custom. Same-sex marriages are permitted under the Civil Union Act, with partners given the choice of having their union called a ‘civil partnership’ or a ‘marriage partnership’ and enjoying the same legal and material benefits and responsibilities as couples married under the Marriage Act.

While your marriage officer will automatically issue you with an original abridged marriage certificate after the ceremony, some countries require an unabridged certificate to register the marriage once you return home. When the marriage officer registers your marriage with the Department of Home Affairs, they will apply for your unabridged marriage certificate, which can take anything from two to eight weeks to obtain.

THE ANTE-NUPTIAL CONTRACT

THE MARRIAGE CEREMONY

Couples should visit an attorney at least three months before the wedding to find out about the different marriage contract options. A Notary Public is an attorney who is specially qualified to execute notarial contracts such as these and can advise couples regarding the contract that best suits their situation. Other important documents such as wills and insurance policies also need to be dealt with. It’s essential that you have an ante-nuptial contract (ANC) drawn up before the wedding to clarify the legal and financial aspects of your union.

According to the South African Marriage Act, the ceremony must take place indoors in a church or other building used for religious services, a public office (like a magistrate’s court) or a private dwelling. Further, it should take place the presence of at least two witnesses, and the entrance to the venue must be open.

IN COMMUNITY OF PROPERTY: This system applies if you do not enter into a specific ANC before marriage. All assets and liabilities, whether acquired before or after marriage, are shared equally. It can be problematic if one partner gets into debt, as the other will be held equally responsible for the amount owed. Furthermore, neither partner is allowed to sell an asset without the other partner’s written consent. OUT OF COMMUNITY OF PROPERTY: If the ANC is ‘Without Accrual’, each partner retains separate ownership of all assets and debts brought into and acquired during the marriage. This can be unfair as non-monetary contributions, such as looking after the home, are not acknowledged. Contracts ‘With Accrual’ take into account both monetary and nonmonetary contributions made during the marriage, while protecting each partner from the liabilities of the other. Assets acquired before marriage are excluded. IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS To get married in South Africa you will need a valid ID book, passport, or an affidavit attesting to your identity if the original document has been lost or stolen. If either partner is a minor, they will also need the written consent of their parents, legal guardians or the Commissioner of Child Welfare. If you’ve been married before, then a final decree of divorce is necessary, and if you’re a widow or widower, the death certificate of your spouse must be produced. You will also need clear copies of your two witnesses’ IDs or passports. Overseas brides and grooms wishing to marry in South Africa should be aware of a few simple legalities, with information about the various acts available on the website of the Department of Home Affairs: www.homeaffairs.gov.za. Foreigners will need copies of their passports, three colour passport photos each, and letter of non-impediment from their embassy. They also need to fill in a ‘Declaration for the Purpose of Marriage’ (Form BI-31) in the presence of the marriage officer, and produce copies of divorce decrees or death certificates where necessary.

Only marriage officers, such as a minister of religion, magistrate, special justice of the peace, and commissioner of oaths, are allowed to conduct a marriage ceremony. Ceremonies today can be non-traditional or conventional, with the latter conducted according to their religion, custom or culture. While the form these take varies substantially between different religions and cultures, most have common elements such as the offering of rings, flowers or some other symbolic item, and the exchange of vows in front of a religious or community leader. Most religions, including Judaism, Islam and Hinduism, see marriage as a sacred duty and an important facet of spiritual life. Customary Zulu marriage proposal are accompanied by ‘lobola’ or ‘bride price’, which refers to payment made by the groom’s family to the bride’s family. While this was once made in the form of cattle, today cash is usually considered acceptable. The wedding reception takes place over several days and involves the wider community in a celebration of feasting, dancing and singing.
