DEDICATED

To my mother, who fully supported my MFA education in the States. She is my hero. Living her whole life in China, she fought through the Cultural Revolution in the 60s’, the game-changing social shifting in the 80s’, and all the other difficulties in life. She is my force and motivation that keep me going forward.

Solving problems with beautiful deliverables is the purpose of every design project. Before reaching that point, we are surrounded by unknowns from all perspectives. Completing a project is an adventure in Which the goal of

reaching the destination where ideas and strategies are delivered, and

through this we learn to be patient and embrace the beauty of the unknown.

I,

OBJECTIVE

This project is an artistic interpretation of a popular piece of music through typography, imagery, and layout. For this project I have selected Bach’s NO. BWV 639 (Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ) which is amongst one the most popular chorale preludes ever written and has been described as “a supplication in time of despair.” This piece was written in trio form using two manuals and a pedal. The pedal voices an emotion, while the two manuals each voices the mundane world and the heavenly hope all represented in the form of triangles. These triangles will stand for the structure of the music, as well as the concept of trinity since this is a religious music in visual form and the color palette contains both a placid calm and emotional epiphany all at once projecting the complexity and contradiction in the music.

I,

(print name) hereby declare that I take full responsibility of

this project.

OBJECTIVE

To design materials and deliverables to reflect the visual language of Jim Jarmusch. The Outliers is a hypothetical film festival to celebrate the later films of Jim Jarmusch, an outstanding independent film director. The feature films for the festival were five of his relative recent ones: Dead Man, Ghost Dog, Broken Flowers, The Limits of Control, Only Lovers Left Alive. These films demonstrated to me an evolution of his work while retaining his original visual style; an outlier to his world, estranged from the known, coping with the unknown.

OBJECTIVE

To mentally and physically record an event, or a story using photography and writing. These recordings will then be the fuel for the contents and designing of the book to reflect the central theme and concept about the event. My project Closure records the preparation of a meal with two storylines: The main story line is the physical process of the preparation and the sub story line is the telling of the personal emotional journey. I will employ quotes from the movie The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby to highlight the underlying story and plot of the piece and will also utilize the combination of two body typefaces to represent the mixture of the composure on the surface and the emotional turmoil underneath. Also using bold calligraphy covered by vellum paper I plan to express the restrained, yet aggressive emotion.

OBJECTIVE

To create a complete set of deliverables for a project of our own choice. The SF FilmScout Festival is a hypothetical festival dedicated for movie fans who enjoy film location scouting, movie trivia and quizzes. One of the deliverables is a pop-up board game paired with an app. The board game was designed based on the famous ransom run from the movie Dirty Harry and the movie quizzes were based on the featured films of the festival.

OBJECTIVE

This typography project will create a 16-page chapbook that briefly predicts and explains a subject on a topic in the future. Believing in the idea that telepathy will be a common communication method in the future, my chapbook does not, however, apply any digital-driven futuristic visual language. Instead, my approach was utilizing paintings, as one of the oldest ways of communicating, to deliver a storytelling, by creating collages on well-known paintings.

OBJECTIVE

To rebrand a dead, defunct or dying brand and revive it into a new life visually re-branding logo design, new brand mission and strategy, and new products and service. Motown used to be the Sound of Young Americans and played an important role in the Civil Rights Movement as an African-American-owned company and achieved cultural crossover success. However, Motown declined in the late 80s and disappeared from the performance stage. Part of the reason was that it had fulfilled its mission—bringing Black music to the mainstream music industry. My project, New Motown will come back with a new vision and mission to motivate, nurture and inspire artists to find their voices and to have their voices heard. From performance art to visual art, Motown will build a sustainable growth community within African-American community by helping artists to succeed.

OBJECTIVE

To analyze and synthesize the “intentions based on a random sign found on the street and develop a new visual system, new contents, and deliverables using this piece. Using a sign that is found in a mundane location, create a new brand to achieve the original intention. As an example, a handwritten sign used to sell oranges on the side of the road would be recreated to amplify their branding for a more modern and well thought out campaign.

OBJECTIVE

To design and create posters using Vandercook machines at the San Francisco Center for the Book. In this digital era, taking time on creating something has become a rarity. Each and every single object used to make these posters traveled a great distance to arrive at this particular location for this specific purpose. Each has a story of their own, these stories were pressed together into the posters, composing even more stories.

NOTE

To transform the everyday commute into a community building experience by creating a movable neighborhood among commuters. Commü is my MFA thesis project that promotes an engaging commute experience. The main deliverable is a location-based interacting app that connects urban commuters to people and places through stories told by real people, giving people a civic experience as one has in a museum. Another deliverable is a publication entitled Commü Initiative. This publication is written for civic planners and urban designers, suggesting to them how to plan and build a community-based commute environment that allows people to have easy and comfortable social interactivity. An engaging, interesting commute experience helps people unwind from the everyday stresses, distracts them from their worries, and refreshes them during their journey from point A to point B. Commute matters, let’s Commü.
