New Komatsu D61-23 Crawler Dozer gets factory-fitted intelligent machine control system
New Komatsu D61 Exi-Pxi-23 Dozer
Hot on the heels of their D37-23 model, introduced just months ago, Komatsu has launched a new medium-sized D61EXi/PXi-23 crawler dozer factory-fitted with an innovative machine control system that works equally effectively in rough and fine dozing applications. Marketed here by their distributors in Ireland, McHale Plant Sales of Birdhill, the D61EXi/PXi-23 is the first Komatsu dozer to come with a factory-fitted intelligent control system that gives fully automatic blade control and blade load control, whether doing rough dozing or finished grading, to deliver an outstanding improvement in productivity. The system is one that Komatsu claims will enhance productivity, reduce costs and improve job site safety. It was first shown to the public in Munich last April. Unlike conventional add-on control mechanisms, the new Komatsu system allows the dozer to perform rough dozing and finish grading functions, all in automatic mode, through the use of a durable offblade sensor package. During rough dozing, the system monitors blade load and adjusts blade elevation accordingly with the result that track slip is kept to a minimum in order to deliver more highly efficiency dozing. As work progresses closer to the target finish grade, the system adjusts the machine accordingly to provide finish grade performance with high-level precision – an outcome that Komatsu claims, will deliver a 13% increase in efficiency. Factory-installed while the machine is being assembled, the D61-23 system includes an improved cab-top Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver, control box and antenna and an enhanced Inertial Measuring Unit (IMU+) with stroke sensing hydraulic cylinders. Robust and accurate, the integrated sensor package eliminates the daily hassle that is part and parcel of having to install and remove conventional GNSS antennae and cables from the blade, not to mention the wear associated with it. For reasons of safety and efficiency, the antenna, mast pole and cables are now fully integrated in the machine. Positioned on top of the cab, the antenna provides accurate data collection, regardless of the actual blade position. In operation, the system works by tailoring the machine’s responses to actual operations – constantly adjusting blade load settings to match actual work conditions. As it moves around the site, accurate surface data is collected by measuring elevations while the stroke-sensing cylinder measures the actual angle of the blade for high precision grading accuracy. From pass to pass, blade control can be left engaged to automate the precise lifting and lowering of the blade at the finish and beginning of each pass. Using TOPCON’s advanced construction management system, Sitelink3D, dozing progress can be communicated to the site office. From there, updated design data can be sent back to the dozer, quickly and efficiently without the need to dispatch personnel. Other Komatsu features present in the D61-23 are longer track-on-ground (EX) and low ground pressure (PX) models that offer customers flotation and weight distribution options to best match applications. Operating weights range from 17740 kg to 18660 kg, depending on the configuration, with a net power output on tap of 125 kW / 168HP at 2200 rpm. For the first three years or 2,000 hours, the D37-23 will be supported by Komatsu’s CARE maintenance program. Part of the package also is Komatsu’s own KOMTRAX technology that uses wireless technology that monitors the machine remotely, protects against theft, records operating hours, fuel consumption and provides maintenance alerts. Commenting, Sales Director at McHale Plant Sales, John O’Brien said “we regard this new model as an attractive proposition that links proven performance with leading edge technology in a way that delivers a more efficient and economical dozing solution.”

Dublin Bus first for workshop accreditation in Ireland Dublin Bus’ Harristown depot is the first Irish site to gain IRTE Workshop Accreditation, an independent scheme that aims to raise industry-wide standards in vehicle maintenance. Developed by IRTE (Institute of Road Transport Engineers), and targeted at passenger carrying and commercial vehicle workshops, the scheme was introduced in late 2012 as a direct response to calls within Dublin Bus’ Harristown depot is the first Irish site to gain IRTE Workshop accreditation the road transport industry for the regulation of maintenance provision. By assessing service providers on their ability to manage a good standard of vehicle maintenance and repair, IRTE Workshop Accreditation ensures that maintenance providers, whether contracted or in-house, are committed to maintaining vehicles to a high standard. Some 50 UK sites, including Müller-Wiseman Dairies and bus operator Arriva, are already IRTE Workshop Accredited, but Dublin Bus’ Harristown depot is the first Irish site – north or south – to achieve the status. Company Health and Safety Manager, James McHugh, explains why Dublin Bus was quick off the mark in pursuing the scheme: “We had been looking for an external means of benchmarking our maintenance systems and procedures against that of industry best practice, and this seemed like a logical way forward.” As McHugh explains: “The audit was comprehensive, well-structured and covered the various requirements in some detail. Like any audit however, it was viewed as another opportunity for further improving what we already had.” McHugh thinks that the accreditation could be just the ticket for Irish operators and maintenance providers looking to ensure they are up to standard: “In considering that operator premises inspections by the Road Safety Authority will now be introduced in late 2013 under the Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Act 2012, this type of audit could prove useful for any operators who may have concerns over compliance.” Ian Chisholm, Head of Operations & Communications at IRTE’s umbrella organisation, SOE (Society of Operations Engineers), says: “By being the first to gain IRTE Workshop Accreditation in the Republic of Ireland, Dublin Bus is leading the way in responsible vehicle maintenance provision. Vehicle maintenance has a serious impact on road safety and compliance, and the fact that Dublin Bus customers can now be absolutely confident in the level of maintenance carried out on their public service vehicles is a significant step forward for the road transport industry in Ireland.” Dublin Bus’ Donnybrook, Clontarf, Phibsboro, Ringsend and Summerhill depots have since gained the accreditation, with plans for the Conyngham Road depot to undergo an audit in the next few weeks.

Dublin set for greater traffic restrictions Road space for private cars will be dramatically reduced in Dublin as part of moves to get more people on to public transport. The National Transport Authority (NTA) plans to build a series of high-speed bus lanes across the city, which will result in less space for private cars. And it says that new carriages for Luas are needed to reduce overcrowding at peak times, while the Dublin Bus fleet needs to be replaced because it is too old and becoming expensive to operate and maintain. Among the likely changes for drivers will include closing streets to private cars at peak times, as happens in the College Green Bus Gate, and reducing the number of routes through the city. For example, at present cars cannot take a right hand turn from George's Street onto Dame Street, and this could be extended to other roads. Other options include making entire lanes bus and taxi-only, either at peak times or throughout the day. The agency has expressed serious concern about the high car ownership levels in the city and surrounding counties, which have reached "saturation" point. A report setting out transport priorities up to 2018 says that road space for private cars will be reduced in Dublin as part of efforts to improve journey times and get more people on to public transport. Unless major investment is made in public transport, and people use it, congestion will return to the capital's streets and surrounding regions with knock-on implications for businesses and commuters forced to endure longer journey times, it warns. It says car ownership levels have soared, fuelled by cheap second-hand cars, and that there are more people using the car to travel to work, school and college today than in 2006.
Irish Owned Ferry gets makeover Interislander – Owned by the Irish Continental Group (ICG), the Interislander flagship Kaitaki set sail for Brisbane, Australia late last month for a 6 week dry dock. As previously reported the New Zealand route based ship (formerly Irish Ferries Isle of Innisfree) which has been extended on charter from ICG is to have the deck 8 passenger areas completely refurbished. "Kaitaki passenger spaces have had no refurbishment in the last eight years of the current charter, so the passenger spaces are definitely in need of a facelift," says Interislander General Manager Thomas Davis. The main scope of the work will include a revamp of the foodcourt area, the bar, the atrium and the toilets on Deck 8, as well as the passenger thoroughfare and shop on deck 7. Approximately $4.5 million has been budgeted for this work. As Irish Company MJM Marine Ltd, which has had significant experience in ferry and cruise ship refurbishment work, are leading the project, in partnership with Swedish company Figura who specialise in ferry passenger design. MJM Marine Limited has undertaken refurbishment work on cruise ships like Pacific Pearl, Saga Pearl and Celebrity Infinity, as well as ro-pax ferries like Stena's pair of Superfast ferries on the Irish Sea.
Are Advances in Automotive Technology Driving us to Distraction? Automotive Forum event open to the public – Aug 30, The RDS, Dublin Technology in an average car today is hugely advanced on what motorists would have encountered even just 10 years ago. The pace of change is relentless and continuing. Without a doubt, car technology has contributed hugely to the vast improvement in road safety over the last decades. However, is the rush to provide motorists with all the trappings of the 'connected' world in their cars increasing the distraction potential for drivers? Also, is there a danger that some technological developments which take over driving and emergency reaction from the driver may actually cause drivers to pay less attention to the road and driving conditions? These and related questions will be debated at an upcoming Automotive Forum organised by the Irish Motoring Writers’ Association (IMWA) and sponsored by Continental Tyres. The Forum, which is open to the public, will be held at the RDS in Ballsbridge on Friday morning, August 30.
The topic will be debated by two expert speakers: Dr. Natasha Merat, Associate Professor at the University of Leeds-based Institute for Transport Studies; and Leading car technology expert, Pim van der Jagt, head of Research and Development at Ford of Europe. “Driving is the single most dangerous activity we engage in on a daily basis,” says Gerry Murphy, Chairman of the IMWA. “We say that safety is always paramount, but by loading cars with technology, are we reaching a tipping point in the level of distraction for drivers? Our expert speakers’ discussion on this topic should be compelling listening for anyone interested in road safety or what is coming in automotive technologies.” “With Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) becoming obligatory on all new cars from next year, even tyres are not exempt from the onward march of new technologies in the car,” says Tom Dennigan of Continental Tyres Ireland. “I am sure the IMWA Forum will provide some fascinating insights into how increased levels of technology will impact on our driving.” The event is aimed at a broad range of audiences, including those interested in car technology development, road safety, and Tom Dennigan, Continental Tyres Ireland and Gerry Murphy, Chairman of the Irish Motoring Writers Association (IMWA) companies from the motoring sector. Admission is free but advance discussing car technology at the launch of the IMWA registration is required. Automotive Forum

NI considering fuel scheme A fuel discount that applies to the Scottish islands and the Isles of Scilly could be extended to other remote and rural parts of the UK, including Northern Ireland. The scheme, which was introduced last year, gives motorists a maximum 5p per litre reduction in duty. The UK government is now looking at petrol and diesel prices in 35 areas in the four nations. The European Commission (EC) would have to approve any change to the scheme. Introduced in March 2012, the discount currently applies to the Hebrides, Northern Isles, islands in the Clyde and the Isles of Scilly. Fuel prices have been sought from almost 1,500 retailers ahead of making an application to the EC in the autumn for an extension to the scheme. In Northern Ireland, businesses in the following areas have been asked for information: Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander said the scheme aimed to keep fuel prices down where costs of transporting petrol and diesel were high. "Northern Ireland obviously has quite a number of sparsely populated areas and what we're seeking today is to gather information from fuel retailers and others about the price level in those areas," he said. "We want to see whether a case can be made, but the thing to understand is that this case has to be made to the European Commission because they have to approve any differential tax rates that apply in a member state on fuel under the energy products directive."
A baker’s dozen of Isuzus for DSL The proven success of the incumbent Isuzu 7.5 tonne rigids in its fleet, was a key factor behind the decision made by Deborah Services Ltd (DSL) to specify the Isuzu marque once again, when it came to replacing the majority of its 7.5 tonners. Following a successful growth period for the company, DSL has replaced these vehicles from its transport fleet with 13 new Isuzu Forward N75.190 4x2 rigids, all fitted with Isuzu’s popular Easyshift automated transmission. Each vehicle also incorporates a purpose-designed, DSL has replaced vehicles from its transport fleet detachable edge protection system, which has been with 13 new Isuzu Forward N75.190 4x2 rigids specifically designed to enhance driver safety whilst working from the truck body. Gary Clark, DSL’s transport manager commented; ‘‘When we were looking to replace our 7.5t trucks we carried out our research over a number of different models. At the end of the day it was the Isuzu N75.190 specification that ticked all the right boxes. The vehicles we have replaced were the earlier design of Isuzu cab model and the reasons why we chose Isuzu again is because of the excellent dealer service we receive along with economical fuel consumption and the best-in-class payload’’. All the new trucks have been supplied to DSL by Isuzu Truck’s long-standing dealer Warrington Vehicle Centre and all of the vehicles are now operating from DSL Hire and Sales, and Contract Scaffolding locations throughout the UK. With each vehicle expected to cover in excess of 50,000 miles per annum over a 5-year working life, the Isuzu rigids have three different body lengths to suit the varying range of contracts undertaken by DSL. Three of the vehicles have front mounted Atlas cranes that are fitted on to 18ft plant equipment flatbed scaffolding bodies, whilst the remaining flatbed scaffolding bodies are a mix of 21ft and 24ft bodies, all manufactured by Bespoke Bodies and Plant Equipment. All the bodies are bigger than their predecessors having been increased in length and width to increase each vehicle’s productivity. The bodies also feature a rear ladder to facilitate easier personnel access to the truck bed, as well as a single-step, side access, at the front end of the body. Two of the new Isuzus are now based at DSL’s Luton and Bow branches and have been built to the Cross Rail contract specification. This specification includes a side scan safety device, which warns cyclists and pedestrians that the vehicle is turning left, as well as an audible reversing alarm. Safety of DSL personnel out on site is paramount and, with this in mind, the body specification for all 13 new Isuzu trucks now incorporates a purpose-designed, detachable edge protection system, which has been specifically designed for driver safety if access to the bed of the vehicle is required “We recognise that there will be times when operatives will need to access the truck bed, however this new feature on our trucks is a practical solution for reducing the potential of a fall,” added Gary Clark. As a further safety measure, each body has a collection of 15 sockets evenly spaced within the truck bed that accommodate the scaffolding restraints used by DSL. This ensures that all scaffolding tubes and boards can be securely held tight in position during transit. “DSL first bought Isuzu trucks back in 2006 and those NQR rigids gave the company 7 years of impressive service, frequently operating in most arduous working conditions. Having this first-hand experience of Isuzu’s productivity and reliability obviously played a key role in the decision by DSL to replace them with the latest 2013 N75.190 models,” said Keith Child, marketing director at Isuzu Truck. Full details of the current Isuzu Truck range can be viewed and downloaded from the company’s website on www.isuzutruck.co.uk

November toll holiday for trucks Ireland is to stop road tolls for goods vehicles in November following reports of low traffic levels on some tolled motorways. Leo Varadkar, Ireland’s minister for transport, said: “I want to find out if trucks will start using our motorways more often if we change the current tolling regime.” The Freight Transport Association Ireland has told its members to take advantage of the opportunity which should save them money. Tom Wilson, FTA Ireland general manager said: “We strongly believe that freight operators should see significant cost savings and benefits, such as cutting journey times, reductions in fuel, vehicle wear and tear, driver’s wages and improved delivery times. All this would lead to better customer satisfaction and we think it makes perfect sense for freight operators to take advantage of it.“ The Irish Road Haulage Association has welcomed the decision, saying it made the suggestion to the Minister following a similar initiative which was implemented on the M6 toll by the industry’s partner organisation in the UK the RHA. The IRHA has long argued that HGVs should enjoy toll-free access across the nation’s tolled routes in order to promote road safety, while facilitating efficient and environmentally conscious freight movements nationwide. The current level of charges on tolled routes for HGVs has been a source of frustration for the IRHA for many years as the high toll cost is prohibitive when high volume traffic is involved. The frustration is further compounded by what the IRHA describes as “an exorbitant level of road tax on HGVs which is rendering many operators uncompetitive, resulting in some establishing a base in Northern Ireland where operating costs are far more favourable.” President of the IRHA Eoin Gavin stated: “The Association welcomes the Minister’s support for our ‘one month, toll free’ proposal as it is in no one’s interest to have HGVs travelling through small towns and villages. Motorways were designed to draw HGVs away from these unsuitable routes and for the month of November they will actually serve their purpose.” He added: “Tolls and road tax are a major blight on the Irish road haulage industry. The ‘one month, toll free’ initiative will be a welcome boost for the sector and the Minister is to be commended for supporting our initiative. He now must maintain that momentum and address commercial vehicle road tax in order to inject further efficiencies into our national fleet.”

Delegates meet Taoiseach to discuss stalled A5 A delegation of cross-border politicians recently met Enda Kenny to discuss the stalled A5 road scheme between Derry and Aughnacloy in County Tyrone. The High Court in Belfast blocked permission for the dual carriageway project in April. Even though millions have already been spent on the proposed road, the project faces an indefinite delay after Roads Minister Danny Kennedy decided not to challenge the ruling. The scheme was/is part of a proposed cross-border business route and recently Northern Ireland politicians met Taoiseach Enda Kenny in Dublin to try to find a way forward. The Irish premier and transport minister Leo Varadkar were asked to work with Stormont minister Danny Kennedy on a revised plan, while the cross-border delegation also pressed for assurances that Dublin’s original £400m commitment for the road will be included in future budgets. Sinn Fein MLA Declan McAleer said: “We were seeking reaffirmation from the Taoiseach of the funding of £25m in 2015 and £25m in 2016 for the A5 would still be available.” Donegal TD Padraig MacLochlainn added: “I am delighted that the Taoiseach and Mr Varadkar have now reiterated the same commitment to the A5 as given by Martin McGuinness and Peter Robinson.”

Survey Shows 1 in 6 Cars on Irish Roads is on Illegal Tyres A recent survey of the state of tyres on cars on our roads has revealed that one in six is running on tyres that are at or below the minimum legal tread depth. Carried out by Continental Tyres in conjunction with fuel retailer, Maxol, the survey covered Tyre checks examined tread tyre tread depth and whether depth and tyre pressures the tyres were inflated to the correct air pressure. 16.7 percent or one in six cars were found to have a tyre at or below the legal tread depth limit of 1.6mm. Independent tests have shown that cars driving on tyres at the 1.6mm legal tread limit demonstrate a dangerous lack of control in cornering and seriously increased stopping distances on both dry and wet roads. Commenting on the survey results, Tom Dennigan of Continental Tyres Ireland said: “It was shocking to see that one in six cars surveyed were driving on dangerous and illegal tyres. We know that in the current economic climate, motorists have been cutting back on their motoring expenses and some may have been tempted to push their tyres to the limit. However, as your only contact with the road, tyres are such a critical element of your car’s overall performance, so our advice is don’t gamble with your family’s safety by neglecting your tyres”. Continental recommends that the optimum time to replace tyres is when they reach 3mm. Independent tests have demonstrated that once tread depth drops below 3mm, tyre performance drops off sharply. It is for this reason that public service and emergency vehicles across Europe have their tyres changed once the tread depth reaches 3mm. The Continental Tyres survey showed that nearly half of the cars tested (48 percent) had at least one tyre that was at or below 3mm of tread depth. In relation to tyre pressure, 53 percent of the cars tested were found to be on tyres with incorrect tyre pressure – in the vast majority of cases they were under-inflated; and 41 percent of cars were found to be dangerously inflated. “Incorrect tyre pressure can affect your vehicle’s handling, overall safety, fuel economy and ride comfort, and it is such an easy thing to get right with the correct pressure information printed on the vehicle itself and in the manual. Drivers really should take the time to regularly check their tyre pressures and the overall condition of their tyres”, said Dennigan.

Businesses report growth in trade Around 75% of businesses on the island of Ireland have experienced a boost in trade over the last three months. Data from the Ireland France Chamber of Commerce (IFCC) shows that businesses in Ireland were on the up again during the second quarter of the year as the economy continued to show signs of stabilising. The data collected shows that about threequarters of the Chamber’s members saw their performance improve between April and June, while almost 80pc of members found their rate of incoming business to be at least steady The IFCC counts the likes of Air France, BNP Paribas and Renault among its members. Despite positive results, two-thirds of firms still believe the Government is not doing enough to stimulate economic growth, while 64% anticipate a further recovery in the Irish economy in the next 24 months. IFCC president Gerry Halpenny notes: “As a bilateral trade organisation, it is encouraging that nearly a quarter of respondents have experienced an increase in incoming business from abroad.”
Commercial vehicle market on the rise Registrations of trucks rose 10.3 per cent in July, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. "July's commercial vehicle market performed on par with 2012 levels as rising truck volumes helped to offset a dip in van sales," said Nigel Base, SMMT commercial vehicle manager. "We've been expecting a rise in truck volumes as the Euro 5/6 issue comes to a head. In July, trucks rose 10.3 per cent continuing the trend begun a month earlier – a momentum that should continue to the end of the year. “Van registrations have fluctuated through the year with dips following sizable peaks in demand. DHL Express upgrades its Irish fleet with 49 new Volkswagen Crafters
DHL has strengthed its fleet with 49 new Volkswagen Crafters
· All new vehicles equipped with safety features such as Reverse Cameras and Motion Controlled Lighting for the cargo areas · Improved security features fitted to all new vehicles DHL Express, the world’s leading international express services provider, today announced that it is introducing two new vehicle types to its Irish fleet. The new vehicles, a Volkswagen Crafter Panel Van and a Volkswagen Crafter Box Body will replace some of the current pick-up and delivery vehicles and are equipped with more comprehensive safety and security systems while delivering improved fuel-efficiency. The new Crafter is more efficient than previous models and has a number of new safety features built in. As standard, all new vehicles are fitted with reverse camera technology, enabling the driver to have a clearer view of any obstacles behind the vehicle when reversing. The vehicles are also equipped with an electronic anti-theft warning system, which is triggered automatically in the event of an attempted break-in. Mike Farrell, DHL Express Operations Director, said: “The new vehicles will strengthen our existing fleet and are the perfect fit for our extensive network. By upgrading now we can ensure continued on-time performance while improving upon the safety and security features of our vehicles.” Mr. Farrell added: “The reduction of carbon emissions through the low-emission Euro 5 engines also represents a significant improvement to our fleet and will contribute to Deutsche Post DHL’s goal of improving our carbon efficiency by 30 percent by 2020”. The new Volkswagen Crafter Panel Van has a load capacity of 14 m³ while the new Volkswagen Crafter Box Body has a larger load capacity of 17.8 m³. As with the current fleet, the vehicles are fitted with bulk head sliding doors, allowing the courier to access the cargo area without having to get out of the vehicle. Similarly all vehicles have fitted foldable shelving enabling the courier to sort the shipments in route order, ensuring they are delivered in perfect condition. The shelving not only helps improve delivery productivity, but more importantly provides a better and safer working environment for drivers through less bending in the process of their job.
Cork Stamp Celebrates Cork Harbour and Port of Cork An Post and the Port of Cork Company unveiled a new postage stamp collection celebrating the Port of Cork and Cork Harbour. The three stamps, designed by Steve Simpson, feature MV Queen Elizabeth berthed at Cobh Cruise Berth, Ireland’s only dedicated Cruise berth, a Maersk Vessel carrying large containers of bananas into Ringaskiddy Deep-water berth and the Cork Clipper yacht racing past Cobh as part of the Clipper race in 2010. Collectively these stamps celebrate Cork Harbour and highlight its importance as a commercial port, a cruise destination and a beautiful leisure amenity for everyone to enjoy. The Port of Cork has been for many years the main trade link for the south coast of Ireland and today the Port remains a vibrant busy port, facilitating the movement of imports and exports. The Port of Cork is a key link to the continued economic success of Ireland and in particular the entire Munster region. Speaking at the postage stamp launch in Custom House, Mr Brendan Keating Port of Cork Chief Executive said: “This is a great honour for the Port and indeed Cork Harbour, to be featured on An Post’s latest postage stamp collection. These stamps will not only raise awareness of the Port of Cork locally and nationally, but once posted these stamps will begin to make their way around the world, which is super recognition for Cork.” He continued: “I’d like to thank all those involved in the process and particularly the An Post design team for producing an excellent collection of stamps of which we are very proud.” The Port of Cork stamp set and accompanying First Day Cover and Miniature sheet set will go on sale nationwide immediately. They can also be ordered at irishstamps.ie or by calling 01-7057400. To coincide with the launch of the stamps, the Port of Cork also announced the winner of their Photograph Competition themed ‘Cork Harbour – A Port in Focus’. Tony O’Driscoll from Cobh, Co. Cork was the overall winner and to mark his achievement his photograph was designed into a postcard. Today the postcard was unveiled with the stamps attached, all ready for posting. There were over 130 photographs received for the competition, which greatly exceeded the Port of Cork’s expectations. Mr Keating congratulated the winner and thanked all those who took part in the photograph competition.

132 numberplates increase sales Car and light commercial dealers are claiming that the new 132 numberplate has improved sales. Industry figures show over 11,600 new cars were sold in July, the first month where the 132 plate was available - nearly three times the number of cars which were sold in the same month last year. The Society of the Irish Motor Industry says footfall in car showrooms is still high and sales figures for August are also promising.

Total traffic in volume terms amounted to 9.05 million tonnes, against a volume of 8.8 million tonnes in 2011. Turnover amounted to €21.8 million, an increase of 1.87% and after deducting costs, the profit on ordinary activities before taxation amounted to €1.36 million. Commenting on the 2012 annual results, Port of Cork Chief Executive, Brendan Keating said: “We are pleased to announce our 2012 results today which have returned an improved performance compared to 2011.” He continued: “Reliable accessible ports delivering prosperity is vital to the achievement of economic recovery in Ireland. We see investment in handling equipment and facilities as key to the future of our business and that of our customers and we are intent on growing our business. This brings investment levels by the company, since incorporation in 1997, to €103 million. Recent achievements in 2012 saw the Port of Cork complete a new compound in Ringaskiddy to accommodate a new Maersk transatlantic service which commenced in January 2012. This is the first Lo-Lo (Lift on Lift off) deep sea service in Ireland. A new dry bulk store at the Deep-water berth in Ringaskiddy was completed by port customer Arkady, which has helped to increase the volume of trade through the port. This will also help to facilitate the growth of the dry bulk sector. In 2012 the Port of Cork also took delivery of a new pilot boat named ‘Failte’ and won the business of servicing the Exxon Mobil oil exploration project. Oil Traffic at Philips 66, Whitegate Oil Refinery amounted to 5 million tonnes, an increase of 1.36%. Non-oil traffic amounted to 3.64 million tonnes showing an increase on 2011 of 6%. Container traffic through the port increased by 6%, bringing the total volume of containers handled at the port in 2012, to 166,285 TEU. Currently the Port of Cork has weekly container services calling to mainland Europe, Rotterdam, Antwerp, Zeebrugee and Southampton. A deep sea transatlantic container service linking Central America to North West Europe also operates weekly. While the liquid bulk and container traffic increased, imports of animal feedstuffs also increased. The Port of Cork anticipates further increases in the agri-business, particularly when the reforms to the CAP come into effect in 2015. In 2012, the Port of Cork welcomed 57 cruise liners, carrying in excess of 100,000 passengers and crew to the region. The visiting cruise liners make a very significant contribution to the economy. The investments made by the Port in recent years developing the cruise facilities in Cobh, continue to show positive returns with booking levels continuing to grow year on year. At the global annual cruise shipping exhibition, Seatrade Miami 2012, the Port of Cork was awarded ‘Best Shore Side Welcome’ and ‘Best Tour Guides’. These awards highlight the commitment and effort the Port of Cork make for every cruise liner calling to Cork. Brittany Ferries’ weekly passenger service from Cork to Roscoff had another successful season operating between March and November 2012. The Port of Cork remains fully committed to establishing new routes from Cork and continues to work to develop a route from Cork to Northern Spain. Consistent with the Strategic Development Plan Review of 2012, the Port of Cork is planning for the delivery of new Port infrastructure in the lower harbour. This key infrastructure will be required to service the businesses of Ireland for the next 20 years, as they grow and prosper and avail of trading opportunities in global markets. In 2012, by way of planning for this infrastructure, the port carried out a consultation process with An Bord Pleanála. Following the recent publication by Government of the National Ports Policy Statement, in which the Port of Cork was highlighted as a Tier 1 port of National Significance, it is hoped that such recognition will help to accelerate the consultation process. The Port of Cork proposes to lodge a planning application with An Bord Pleanála by the end of 2013, following further public consultation and community engagement. During 2012, the port was involved in a number of local community based projects in Cork Harbour. Additionally, the very successful schools initiative organised by the port, continues to grow. Now in its seventh year, the initiative attracts up to 20 primary schools from the Cork city and harbour area and helps raise awareness of the Port of Cork and Cork Harbour among 5th class children. Sustaining the quality of the environment in Cork Harbour, particularly in areas which have the potential to be affected or influenced by Port Operations remains a priority for the Company. The Port of Cork is as always committed to the highest standards of environmental management through the implementation of the environmental management programme and standards consistent with the renewed ISO14001 accreditation and Eco Ports foundation.

Telematics: When time is money By Phil Barnes, Business Development Manager, Masternaut Ireland We are all aware of the pivotal role motorways and roads play to business and commerce. Trucks and hauliers are the lifeblood to the economy, transporting goods and services 24/7/365. Of course it goes without saying that every logistics business aims to ensure that their operation runs like clockwork. With vehicles crisscrossing the length and breadth of counties and countries an age old adage rings true in the haulage industry - time is money. That’s why fleet managers and their drivers have to go through each route with meticulous detail to make sure that getting from A-B is as time and fuel efficient as possible. Every extra minute spent on the road is Euros burnt up in fuel costs. It is hardly surprising, then, that a number of Irish hauliers are turning to telematics. Of course it was not too long ago – as readers of this magazine may well remember – that the process of mapping a route, analysing timesheets or mileage logs had to be done manually with reams of log books and a trusty calculator. Not only was it time consuming, you also ran the risk of making mistakes. Mobile and internet connectivity has transformed telematics. Today it can provide hauliers with a wealth of information about a vehicle all within a matter of a few clicks. Fleets fitted with telematics provide real time information on driver behaviour and engine performance. This is achieved by accessing a vehicle’s CAN (Controlled Area Network) bus which generates granular data giving an insight into vehicle depreciation and cost per mile. The information is also not just limited to one country. A haulier’s control centre will have all the information it needs in real-time whether from they have a low loader in Limerick or a truck in Gdansk. Put simply, telematics is borderless. Telematics on the road Here at Masternaut Ireland we recently signed up our 300th customer, PIP Security, which joins the likes of Ballinalard Transport and Bon Delivery in using our technology. GRAHAM Construction, one of Ireland's largest privately owned companies operating in the construction markets reduced its fuel costs in the first four months of using telematics by 11%. 6% was attributed to eradicating unwarranted idling and efficient route choices, while 5% was due to improved driving technique following individual driver guidance. Driving safety and sustainability It is estimated that a third of all road traffic accidents could be work-related. Thankfully, road deaths on Irish roads reached the lowest level on record in 2012 (Road Safety Authority). A report published in February in this magazine, in partnership with Volvo trucks, found that nine out of ten accidents involving trucks are a result of the human factor. Telematics can be used to champion safe driving - which inevitably leads to lower fuel costs and lower CO2 emissions. A number of organisations are using the technology to implement driver ‘league tables,’ where safe drivers are rewarded and drivers in need of improvement are provided with training. So, what should fleet managers be looking out for when bringing on a telematics solution? Firstly, conduct a thorough evaluation of the system – what level of connectivity does it provide? It should also easily integrate with other software at the control centre and provide data not just for fleet managers, but also business data for CEOs and finance directors so they can make informed decisions. Finally, how much Research & Development has gone into the telematics solution? R&D demonstrates commitment to the industry and the fact that it is constantly looking for ways to enhance the product. What does the future hold? A technology close to the hearts of hauliers is tachographs and a platform which combines both telematics and tachograph functionality will support the EU Smart Tachograph proposals which will come into force from 2017 – 2018. The ability to store, record and download dynamic driver and vehicle data wirelessly, while automating data compilation and scheduling, improving data reliability and reducing IT complexity will significantly reduce operational and administrative overheads. It will also enable logistics companies to gain driver time and maximise fleet efficiency while improving driver safety while ensuring deadlines are never missed. The future is delivering complimentary services and multiple business benefits based on telematics-enabled data transmission to the relevant stakeholder. In this case, adding a degree of forward projection to a driver’s hours management. Imagine a world where potential infringements are notified to the office based on a predicted route, schedule or activity - before it occurs. Managers can protect their truck drivers, the company, the brand and the o-licence in realtime.

Superquinn trucks to undergo revamp Musgrave is to change the name of its Superquinn stores to SuperValu from February 2014 and is investing €10m in refurbishing the Superquinn store network. Due to a reorganisation in Superquinn’s support office in Lucan in Dublin, 102 jobs will be lost over the next 18 months but the 2,500 store staff are unaffected. “Combining our SuperValu and Superquinn stores creates an unrivalled Irish retail brand, enabling shoppers to access SuperValu’s offer nationally, while incorporating the best of Superquinn,” said Musgrave Group CEO Chris Martin. “We understand that some customers will be sad to see the Superquinn name change. However, the decision follows a considered review of all options and is an inevitable next step given the realities of a totally changed grocery market and what the Irish consumer now needs.” Martin added that SuperValu had grown by 30pc over the past 10 years and achieved retail sales of just over €2bn a year. “With the addition of Superquinn, one in four Irish consumers will shop at the expanded network of 222 stores.”
Waste prices on the rise Waste companies in the Republic of Ireland are increasing the costs of household bin collections disproportionately in comparison with rises in landfill tax, according to environment minister Phil Hogan. In a letter to the National Consumer Agency (NCA), Hogan complained: “It is inexcusable and reprehensible that waste collectors would try to use the increase in the landfill levy as a smokescreen to inflate their prices.” He said he would work with the agency to address instances of general price hikes being blamed on the levy. A number of bin collectors have increased their charges recently, blaming the rise in the landfill levy from €65 to €75 a tonne in July, according to The Irish Times. In one instance, Greyhound Recycling raised its charges by 76% more than the levy increase but, following a complaint to the NCA, then reduced them. Thornton, Panda and City Bin have also increased their charges since the levy increase, the paper reported. Hogan said: “This kind of opportunitistic behaviour is unacceptable. I clearly signalled the increase in the levy a full 12 months in advance of its introduction, so it should not have come as a surprise to anybody in the industry.” The Department of Environment, Community and Local Government of Ireland said: “While it is accepted that the levy does impose an extra cost on disposing waste to landfill, its primary function is to change both consumer and industry behaviour to divert waste away from landfill to more productive uses.”
New exports on the rise Growth in Irish manufacturing activity accelerated in July as new export orders grew for the first time since February, a survey showed on Thursday, in a positive sign for an economy back in recession. Ireland's economy unexpectedly shrank late last year and early this year, despite Europe holding up Dublin as an example of austerity policies working as the country prepares to complete an international bailout in 2013. The Investec Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index rose to 51.0 in July from 50.3 in June, which was the first rise above the 50 line dividing growth from contraction since February. "After a sluggish start to the year, activity in the Irish manufacturing sector appears to be building momentum in the summer months," Investec Ireland chief economist Philip O'Sullivan said. Manufacturing accounts for about a quarter of Irish gross domestic product, according to World Bank figures. The government is still targeting economic growth of 1.3pc this year as it tries to cut one of the biggest budget deficits in Europe but the central bank and analysts see slower expansion rates. The increase in factory activity was underpinned by unusually hot weather in Ireland and stronger demand from Britain as the economy there picks up, O'Sullivan said. "The key is whether this increased demand can be sustained and replicated across Ireland's other key trading partners. We would be cautiously optimistic that it will," he said. The sub-index measuring orders from abroad jumped to 53.2 in July from 48.0 in June, above the 50 line for the first time in five months.

support from our staff down through the years. They have played a big part in our growth and success.” For the past quarter of a century, Phillips Logistics has been delivering stock direct from suppliers to their customers’ front door. In doing so, the company is dealing with the general public six days a-week, 52 weeks a year. Since its inception, Phillips’ has enjoyed an excellent working relationship with B&Q, who remain their main customers. Originally known as Block & Quayle, B&Q is one of the world’s best known DIY and home improvement retail chains. It is the largest DIY retail chain in China and the UK, the second largest in Europe and the fourth largest in the world behind The Home Depot, Lowe’s and OBI. “We’ve been working for them from the very beginning,” Mervyn explains. “We distribute bathroom suites, furniture and other goods for them throughout Ireland. We work between their nine stores in the North and eight in the South. We have four hiab truck cranes dedicated to them. “It’s a great contract and we’re very lucky to have it. Long may it continue. We also do deliveries for some of the other leading DIY stores, including Woodie’s, Atlantic Homecare and Homebase.” Another of Phillips’ main contractors is Homedecor. Based in Sheffield, they are the largest distributor of mirror and panel doors in Europe and have a depot in Italy. They supply doors to all DIY stores including B&Q, Woodies, Homebase and Argos. The Phillips fleet ranges from Mercedes Sprinter vans to 12-15 tonne curtain siders and 18 and 26 tonne hiabs. A 40ft trailer and unit is also available. With its range of vehicles, the company can collect and deliver almost

anything. The bulk (hiab) vehicles can deliver blocks for building sites, pavers, tonne bags, sheds and basically anything on a pallet direct to your door. Phillips’ curtain sided vehicles are also fitted with tail lifts which allows the drivers to wheel goods on and off as needed. It also enables Mervyn and his team to deliver to a wider range of customers, such as private houses, where there are no forklifts to unload. “Our fleet consists of mostly Mercedes, but also Iveco and DAF. We deal mainly with Mercedes Truck & Van on the Bush Road, Dungannon. The garage is only about a mile from us, so it’s good to have them on our doorstep.” Phillips Logistics cover all of Ireland and the UK, collecting anything from small parcels, single pallets, part loads and full loads. Another string to its bow is home removals. The company has all the equipment and experience necessary to help people move properties with minimum risk. In addition, Phillips’ provides an express delivery service for smaller goods and small packages. Being located in Dungannon means Phillips’ is within easy reach of most parts of the country. It is

linked to Belfast by the M1 Motorway and is less than two hours’ drive from Dublin. “We’re close to all the main roads and are very central,” Mervyn points out. Similar to every other transport company, Phillips Logistics has been hit by a combination of the economic recession and rising fuel and tax charges. “It’s a very tough time to be business. I’ve never seen anything like it. Everyone is in survival mode and are just trying to weather the storm. Diesel costs are killing us. Road tolls are a huge burden on us as well. We send trucks down to places like Waterford, Athlone and Galway, and all those roads are tolled. It’s a kind of a hidden cost that can be very
expensive.” Despite the strains on his business, Mervyn is looking to the future with optimism. “We’re trying to grow the company as best we can. We’re seeking planning permission to build a new warehouse which will allow
us to handle more goods and to take on more jobs. You have to keep going…” With that sort of a can-do attitude, the next 25 years promise to be just as successful as the first 25 were for this particular Co. Tyrone haulier!

Accident repairs: get it Wright first time! Northern Ireland’s largest accident repair group, Wright Accident Repair Centres Ltd., recently opened a new multi-million-pound, 35,000 sq ft bodyshop in Dromore, County Down. To coincide with this landmark development, Irish Trucker caught up with group general manager Dougie Spiers to get an insight into day-to-day activities at this long-established and highly-successful family business. trategically located on a prominent site alongside the main corridor between Belfast and Dublin, Wright Accident Repair Centres’ new purpose-built bodyshop, just outside Dromore in County Down, offers a full accident management service. This new bodyshop – which boasts state-of-the-art technology to carry out bodywork repairs and produce quality oven refinishing - had been in the works for twelve months and represents a substantial investment of time, money and industry. Wright Accident Repair Centres Ltd. has been providing a stellar accident management service to motorists in Northern Ireland and beyond for over four decades, offering a full accident repair and 24-hour breakdown recovery service for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles both north and south of the border. Reflecting on the genesis of the family business, which was established in Dromore over 40 years ago, general manager Dougie Spiers notes: “The business was started in 1971 by Donald and Jenny Wright, who are still the main shareholders today. Donald and Jenny are joined in the running of the business by their sons Mark and Richard.” The group comprises a total of four workshops – located in Belfast, Dromore, Dundonald and Mallusk (Newtownabbey) – with around 90% of their work coming via insurance companies (Wrights are approved by the vast majority of these). They are also a fullapproved repairer for the likes of Peugeot, Hyundai and BMW. Over the years, Wright ARC have built a solid reputation
as the accident repairer of choice in Northern Ireland, embracing constant changes both in repair technology and computerisation. Wright ARC have consistently chosen the manufacturers’ standard repair methods through the years and this has put them in good standing with insurance companies, brokers, fleet companies and the private motorist. They believe in doing the job right first time, every time, and this is why their reputation now precedes them. Of course, becoming an approved repairer for leading insurance companies requires constant investment in modern equipment and Wright Accident Repair Centres have never left any stone unturned in this department, investing enormously over the years in staff, equipment, technology, facilities and premises. For example, between the four accident repair centres, there are 19 baking ovens to ensure that every repaired vehicle is finished to the most precise standard possible. “We run four state-of-the-art facilities,” Dougie confirms. “We have a 37,000 sq ft facility here at Saintfield Road, Belfast, which was opened in 2001 and we have 23,000 sq ft bodyshops at both Dundonald and Mallusk, which we opened in 2004 and 2005 respectively. “In total, across the entire operation, we employ 160 people, all of whom are fullytrained and highly-skilled in their particular area of expertise. We operate a fleet of 250 courtesy cars to ensure that our customers are never off the road and we have a recovery fleet of six trucks and vans.” Everything is 100% customer–orientated. From the fist point of contact, customers are made to feel at ease in a comfortable, bright,

friendly and spacious environment. A full accident management service offers customers the peace of mind of knowing that their warranties will be maintained – on any make or model of vehicle. The availability of courtesy cars means that downtime is kept to an
absolute minimum. Optimal customer service standards are implemented from when the vehicle is recovered to the moment it is delivered back to the customer in perfect condition. All Wright ARC bodyshops are fully equipped to meet all manufacturers’ standards
and quality controls. Wrights invest in the latest technology, including specialist alignment jigs to ensure perfect structural alignment for chassis strength and 100% steering accuracy; Inverta spot welding equipment for the new different strength metals

Richard Wright, who has been in the repair business all his working life and is an experienced estimator, runs the new Dromore bodyshop along with his wife Tracey. There are three estimators in total at the Dromore office, all of whom liaise with both the customer and insurance companies. They are Automobile Training Association accredited, as well as PAS125 approved. Wright ARC operate to full ISO 9001 quality standards. The spectacular bodyshop in Dromore is well-lit, spacious and clean, offering the best working conditions in the industry. Looking to the future, Dougie is confident that Wright Accident Repair Centres Ltd. will continue to thrive by providing a highquality service: “We pride
ourselves on the quality of our work and that’s what we are renowned for,” he concludes. “Quality is vitally important in this line of work. “We are on call 24/7 and our workshops are open until 8pm during the week as well as a half-day on Saturdays. Keeping recycling times down to the minimum is key. We use EMACS Bodyshop Management Systems, which are time-in-motion, to monitor and maximise efficiency and reduce recycling times.”

n his speech at the Exporter of the Year Awards 2012 last November, Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton TD described successful exporters as “the heroes of the Irish economy”. Moments later he presented Ann O’Brien, MD of Kent Stainless, with the overall award which was recognition of their exceptional performance in securing and building new export markets. for celebration back in May when Kent was unveiled as the International Business Award winner at the Leinster provincial final of the Ulster Bank Business Achievers Award. The Wexford-based steel manufacturing company has doubled its turnover in the past five years and approximately 70% of this growth has been through exports for the waste water treatment, pharmaceutical and civil sectors. “They are prestigious awards and we beat off some pretty stiff competition to win them,” commented Sales Executive Willie Colfer. Founded in 1982 by Pat Kent, Kent Stainless Ltd started business as a general steel fabricator. The company focused on Stainless Steel fabrication at the end of the 1980s and began specialising in stainless steel drainage products in the early 1990’s. Sustained growth by the company throughout the 90’s saw the introduction of stainless steel surface protection, and in the late 1990s this began to be demanded for outdoor applications. The external channel drainage and recessed
access covers for external works were then complemented by a full suit of stainless steel street furniture including bollards, bins, cycle racks and seating. “It came about by carrying out drainage work for clients in London about six, seven years ago – the same contractors asked us could we design and manufacture streetscape products and that end of the business developed from there,” explained Willie “Clients come to us with their own ideas and we develop it from there. We get involved at the design stage, come up with the costings and provide them with a functional product.” Examples of Kent’s streetscape products passenger shelters, timetable stands, waste bins and bollards - can be found at every Luas Station in Dublin. “That was the job that really put us on the map,” added Willie. “It was the largest project awarded in Ireland for stainless steel street furniture” Their work on Dublin’s rapid light rail network opened the door for other lucrative contracts with prestigious clients such as Wembley Stadium, the Olympic Stadium and, closer to

home, the Aviva Stadium and Croke Park, to name but a few. The T2 at Dublin Airport is another major success story for Kent Stainless. On exiting the new terminal a full range of Kent products are on view including balustrade, bollards, litter bins, recessed access covers and tactile warning studs. Further away from the terminal, within the car park and forecourt areas there are numerous new products which Kent Stainless designed and manufactured for the contract including CCTV poles, traffic light poles, flag poles and trolley corrales. 2011 saw Kent Stainless embark on its largest order ever when exporting 200 tonnes of stainless steel to Lusail City in the Middle East. Lusail, Qatar’s future city which is being built in order for Qatar to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, is located 15k north of capital city Doha and will eventually accommodate approximately 250, 000 people. The city will feature, marinas, island resorts, Stadiums, Luxury Shopping malls and elaborate Entertainment Districts to name but a few. Work on such large projects spelled job creation for the South East, and Kent Stainless took on 20 new crew members to enable them to keep production rates up. The Ardcavan-based company currently provides gainful employment to 102. Running parallel with their product based growth is an ad hoc custom fabrication service. The current “Machine Building”service offers a second to none manufacturing service for large industry including paper mills, wastewater, pharmaceutical, food, dairy and beverage industries.

The in-house capabilities of laser cutting, brake pressing, pipe bending, bead blasting and electropolishing ensure all types of custom fabrication can be supplied. nyone who saw the RTE television documentary, ‘Coal, Frankenstein and Mirror: An Irish Nativity’ in the run-up to last Christmas will recall Templeboy National School in Co. Sligo being featured. Templeboy was one of four schools from throughout Ireland the documentary followed, from the teachers to pupils and families as they prepared for Christmas Day. As the school’s transport provider, the programme provided M Finnegan Minibus & Coach Hire with some unexpected, but very welcome publicity. “We aren’t the biggest of bus hire companies, so it was great to get that kind of exposure,” Michael Finnegan says. As well as providing school transport to hundreds of children in Sligo, M Finnegan Minibus & Coach Hire offers a private bus hire service to get you to and from any event, including sporting events, weddings, airport transfers, conferences and corporate events, day trips and school tours. The company prides itself on offering passengers a comfortable journey at the most competitive rate. Boasting a 14-strong fleet and operating in Sligo and surrounding counties, the family-run business has buses to suit any group size, from 18-seater mini buses to

54-seater luxury coaches. While getting you where you need to go is really important to Michael and his staff, passenger safety is their number one priority. “Most of our work is based locally,” the affable bus operator explains. “We’re part of the local community in the sense that we do school runs, tours for organisations like the ICA (Irish Countrywomen’s Association), airport and hotel transfers, and bring GAA and soccer teams to and from matches. Our school runs are carried out within a 20-mile radius of Templeboy. “When the schools are closed for the summer holidays, we keep ourselves busy by providing transport for foreign language students to the Key Institute of Ireland in Carrowmore, which specialises in English language and equitation holidays. The Key Institute is one of our best customers. “Most of our work is secured through word of mouth. Our location on the N59 means we are only a few minutes from Enniscrone, which is well-known for its beach and golf club, while we are also close to Sligo and Ballina. In fact, Templeboy is the halfway point between the two towns.” The Finnegan family has been providing a range of affordable luxury transport options for nearly 30 years.

driving, doing the runs to matches, discos and so on. All of the family chipped in, which is something you’re used to doing when you come from farming stock. “When Duracell relocated their factory to Belgium, I was offered a job there, but I decided to come home instead. My father was coming towards retirement age and I ended up taking over the family business.”
Since 1992, when they had just one school run, Michael and his wife Michaela have grown M Finnegan Minibus & Coach Hire into one of the biggest of its kind in the Yeats County. The company now operates 14 buses and employs 10 drivers on a parttime basis. In 2004, Michael took delivery of his first Iveco and now they make up half of his fleet. These can carry
between 18 and 29 passengers. He also runs two Mercedes 814 Varios, which are 30-32 seaters, one DAF Bova 51-seater, one DAF Jonckheere 53-seater and one Dennis Bercoff 54seater. In addition, the familyrun business operates two 44-seater ‘Cannon’ buses which were specially built by Cannon Truck & Plant in Strabane, Co. Tyrone. “We are the only ones in the
country to have these particular models,” Michael says. “They were built by William Cannon on a 10-tonne DAF truck chassis. They are very practical and ideal for the type of work we do. I would recommend them to anyone.” Unsurprisingly, Michael is also a big fan of Iveco: “We’ve stuck with Iveco since we bought our first one nearly 10 years. We have seven now which we’ve bought in both Ireland and the UK. We have found them to be a very reliable and economical bus.” Michael and Michaela are parents to Cathal (14), Aine (12) and Meabh (10). Cathal helps out when he’s off school and is showing a great interest in the business. So when it comes to your individual or group travel needs, look no further than M Finnegan Minibus & Coach Hire. Just get in touch with Michael or Michaela and they will be delighted to help you with your travel arrangements. For more information, contact Michael on 087 2479536.

The company’s impressive fleet
providing a dependable service around the clock, at an affordable rate, it’s difficult to go wrong. Reflecting on the foundation of the business, he notes: “I set the business up in 1998, having been involved in the motor trade all my working life prior to that. I served my time as a panel beater in a garage in Killarney and has specialised in body work up until 1997. I had been with McAuliffe’s for three years but then in ’98 I decided to set up on my own.” The breakdown / recovery sector – like the rest of the economy – hasn’t been immune to the economic downturn but David is pleased to report that the quiet days are now behind him: “The recovery business is thriving at the moment,” he reveals. “Five years ago, you could be doing a couple of jobs a week but I could be taking six or seven jobs a day now, at either side of the county. We are very busy, thankfully.” David specialises in recovery and also runs a smart repairs centre – bumper scuffs, windscreen repairs, valeting etc. Indeed, it was is these repairs that he had originally started out but gradually the recovery arm of the business grew wings and took off: “When I first started doing
the smart repairs, I introduced the recovery as a side to that and it has now taken over. The recovery is now very much the main part of the business,” he confirms. A member of the Institute of Vehicle Recovery, Bartlett Recovery is on call 24 hours a day, seven days per week and David oversees a fleet of three high-tech vehicles: an 07 Iveco with tilt and slide; an 05 Isuzu with tilt and slide; and a Nissan jeep for jump starts, fuel contamination callouts etc. For the time being, David is running a one-man show but he can envisage his son Stephen becoming more and more involved in the family

business: “It’s a one-man operation and I work most days myself but my son, who is a full-time mechanic with Adams of Tralee, main Hyundai dealer, comes in and covers for me at weekends. Stephen will probably become more and more involved and I can see him eventually coming into the business and working alongside me.” The catchment area of Bartlett Recovery takes in most of County Kerry and also goes into Newcastlewest and southern parts of neighbouring Limerick. “Most of our contracts are based in Tralee, which is the main
town in the area, ten miles from Castleisland,” David notes. In terms of clubs, Bartlett Recovery handles all the AA work in Tralee as well as the Hibernian contract and is also the main contractor in Tralee for Mondial Assistance, MIS Recovery and Crash Services, Mapfre Asistencia and Europe Assistance as well as doing work or AXA. “We also do towing for a lot of local garages,” David continues. “We’d work for Adams of Tralee, Divanes Garage in Castleisland,

unrivalled because of the knowledge and expertise they've gained in the livestock transportation industry. They can also provide general goods haulage through Ireland and the UK. This is a modern livestock transport company, with a modern and up to date fleet, offering a service above that of their rivals, which is reliable and timely to its customers. The fact that this business is in existence for over 60 years is a testament to the service they provide, a service that began in the early 50's, when Peter Mc Geough bought a cattle lorry and began hauling livestock to and from marts, then during the 70's his son Martin got involved in the business and in turn his son Damien, who owns the company today. My grandfather started out with one lorry back in the early 50's and in turn my father took over from him

Damien agrees that the haulage industry has undergone major changes,” When my grandfather first started, he was the only person in the area that had a phone, so people would call to the house to use it or get messages from people that would have rang him, now we're all equipped with mobiles ,and lorries have sat nav's and tracking devices, things that would have been unheard until recent times. A lot of other aspects have changed too and there are a lot more rules and regulations involved in the business now.” Mc Geough's have come through two recessions and the experience they have gained over the years is invaluable during the current economic climate. When asked about their day to day work, Damien said “We transport all the main types of livestock like cattle (commercial, pedigree beef and dairy), pigs and sheep”. Health and Safety is a huge

throughout the 32 counties of Ireland, so our fleet is kept in excellent condition in order to avoid any unnecessary downtime. We carry out some of the maintenance work ourselves, but generally John Toal does it all for us and of course if the vehicle is still under warranty it will go back to the main dealer”. Damien revealed that a new Scania R620 has arrived from Mc Elvaney Motors, the competent carrier of a new purpose built Pezzaioli double decker lorry & drag. “We purchased the new R620 from Mc Elvaney Motors recently. Scania is the preferred choice of truck for us as we find them the most

reliable and they rarely give trouble. We have been dealing with Mc Elvaney Motors for years now and have found them very good to deal with. It was from Mc Elvaney's that I purchased my first new Scania back in 2004, which is still going strong today.” DMcGeough Livestock enters its busiest period from September onwards, although that's not to say that they aren't busy all year round. “We would be kept going steady throughout the year, but from September onwards, it would be very busy. In present times, it's all about cutting down the overheads given the rise in diesel prices and the fact that
haulage rates have not increased. We do a bit of U.K work as well, so that helps to keep us going. It's a case of working from week to week these days anyway, but overall we can't complain.” Operating in the livestock industry means that McGeough's also do a “wee bit of farming” as Damien stated. Their pride and their passion about their work is blatantly clear, “ We take great pride in our fleet as we do in the care of all animals that we transport”. Their Vintage Volvo F88, an original working lorry owned by Martin Mc Geough was repurchased and restored to its former glory by Damien and recently awarded a prize
at the recent Full of the Pipe Truck Show in Cavan, an award that delighted the company. With many years experience in the livestock industry in Ireland and the U.K, DMcGeough Livestock deliver a very high standard of service with trained competent drivers and an up to date modern fleet of vehicles. This is how they have gained repeat business from their customers, who have remained loyal to them through the tough times, and it also explains how they are gaining new customers with such an intact reputation for their efficiency.

cross the board, these are tough times for everyone involved in the haulage industry but JFM Haulage are bucking the trend. The Antrim-based haulage company was founded by MD Sean Crawford just three years ago slap bang in the middle of the downturn but, against all the odds, it continues to grow from strength to strength. After 40 years behind the wheel, Sean Crawford decided to branch out on his own. It was a brave decision
at the time given the uncertainty that shrouded the industry but he hasn’t looked back since. He started trading with one truck but now JFM Haulage has 11 trucks on the road, and 20 employees. A competitive and progressive transport firm in the current environment, they harbour big ambitions to expand in the not too distant future by adding to their services and fleet to enable them to meet their customers and the market’s demands. “We are a small but rapidly

customers can trust, the employees enjoy working for and a business which is effective and efficient in everything it does. “Reliability is the key in this business and I also believe that communication is vital communication between the driver, the office and the customer. Everyone needs to know what is happening and when the delivery can be expected.” An example of the company’s commitment to keeping their customers in the loop is evidenced by the fact that they there is an on call manager available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. JFM Haulage offer a variety of services including HGV drivers trained in refrigerated transport, dry freight transport including box trailers, curtain side trailers, Skeletal trailers, low loaders and tanker work (ADR qualified drivers available.) The company also offers a parcel delivery service using a range of vehicles to meet customer requirements. No matter how great or small your transport

requirements; JFM are committed to providing a first class service. It is this personal attention that gives the customer confidence in their ability to meet deadlines. “Our main area of work is with DFDS. We have the availability to complete transport throughout Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and mainland UK,” Conor added. “We focus highly on customer service. It’s a saturated market but we work hard to keep customers happy. “If you work hard and run a tight ship there is money to be made.” Controlling costs is an integral part of the business strategy. Like every company involved in the transport sector, the price of fuel is a thorn in their side. “That’s a big challenge, it’s an uphill battle every day. We work hard to keep our costs as low as possible and monitor currency exchange
rate closely. But that is a problem facing everyone at the moment.” A highly skilled workforce is another key ingredient in JFM’s winning formula. The company boasts ethos of ongoing training and development of staff. All drivers are fully trained in house and possess all the required qualifications (ADR, CPC etc). “We have taken on a lot of young drivers and we run our own courses. We have identified this as a weakness in the industry, not all drivers have the necessary qualifications and training. Sean personally vets every driver and Health & Safety, for instance, is very important to us.” Despite their rapid rise in such a short space of time, Conor reveals the company has no intention of resting on their laurels. Plans for further expansion are already in the pipeline. “Ideally, we would like to

add two to three trucks per year to our fleet but we are also very much conscious of the fact that we need to financially stable and have to
keep the finances under control.” Conor and JFM Haulage are happy to answer any queries.

Paddy Becton looks after the greater Dublin region and east coast and has over 40-years experience in the business. Shay Dempsey runs the stores and showrooms in Greenogue

Midland Truck and Trailer Spares has broken the country down into a number of geographic regions, which are serviced at least once a week. "On Monday we are in the Cavan, Monaghan, Longford area. On Tuesday I cover Galway, Clare, Tipperary etc. Our customers know when we will be in their area and they ring in their orders in advance. We also use a network of couriers around the country for urgent deliveries," Fergal commented. In order to meet individual customer requirements the company carries an extensive stock of spare parts at its impressive facility on the Naas Road. Fergal admits there is a considerable amount of the company's working capital tied up in stocks. "In this business you have to carry a large stock of parts. It is the name of the game. Operators can't afford to have vehicles off the road while they are waiting for spare parts." Built on the impressive cornerstones of selling high quality genuine parts at competitive prices and backing up the package with high levels of customer service, the will continue to grow and prosper for the foreseeable future. “Business is good at the moment after a few tough years, but I think it was the same for all businesses. We are fortunate to have a good customer base and once we keep them happy then we are happy. We are always on look out for new customers, but in fairness, we never had any intention of getting too big, so we’ll just see how things go.”

growing at a phenomenal rate. In just two years, it has emerged as a leading provider of asset finance and invoice finance for both SMEs and large businesses across the country. With offices in Dublin and Belfast, and new offices opening in Galway and Cork this year together with sales representatives dotted throughout the island, Close Brothers can offer local and quick-decision making, alongside a personalised service with individually tailored packages and funding solutions that directly meet the needs of your business. Their team of specialists have vast experience working with businesses in a variety of sectors. “We’re actively lending money to companies across a variety of sectors,”
Harry Parkinson says. “We’re currently building a loan portfolio and, as part of that, we’re developing businesses around the country. We’ve got a good client-base going and are delighted to be able to count a number of transport companies among our clients. We have built up an excellent working relationship with highly reputable companies together with franchised and specialist commercial Suppliers and Dealers. “Transport is one of the more desirable sectors to work with because the assets are durable, re-marketable, easily identifiable, very resalable and we understand the second-hand market for trade values. “Over the past 12 months, we have

supported the SME sector, having funded management buy-outs and buy-ins, taken several companies out of receivership and turned them into good, viable businesses.” He continues: “We’re very quick to respond to requests for finance. That is something we pride ourselves on. We can turn deals around very quickly and make them happen.” Based in the Dublin office, Harry is delighted with the company’s expansion in Ireland. “When Adrian Madden opened our Dublin office in July 2011, we had just four staff. “We have since built that up to 20 and are still recruiting. Most of our sales representatives have worked in the mainstream banks, so we know the people and the suppliers. We have 11 sales staff located in Dublin,
Belfast, Munster and Connacht. “Taking asset finance and invoice finance personnel into account, we have over 50 staff on the island. We’re very busy and very pleased with the inroads we’ve made in the Irish market. We’ve had a great response from Irish businesses.” Last year, they produced the ‘Keeping the Wheels Turning’ White Paper Report in association with the Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA). The Report was successful in securing Government support through the implementation of user fuel rebate for the haulage industry. The Report claimed the industry is suffering from a serious cash-flow crisis, even though it is responsible for moving 95 per cent of freight in a time of booming exports. Head of Sales, Adrian Madden, tells us more.
“Almost immediately after joining Close Brothers Commercial Finance, I got in touch with the IRHA and worked in conjunction with them to compile the White Paper,” he explains. “Due to increasing costs from road taxes and fuel increases, many transport companies faced the prospect of going out of business because of the crippling effect on their cash flow. We partnered with the IRHA to raise awareness of what we believe the government could be doing to help these firms, and thankfully they listened to us. “The publication of the White Paper gave us great exposure, helping to get us established as an organisation that really understands the way the transport sector operates.” According to Adrian, asset based finance is outperforming other major
forms of business lending as both clients and lenders recognise its inherent strengths in unpredictable economic times. Both asset and invoice financing can be used alone or alongside other types of traditional funding options. How asset based finance works Asset finance is one of the fastest growing funding options in the market. In contrast to loans and overdrafts, Close Brothers Commercial Finance’s range of products allows you to put the asset straight to work and keep your working capital intact. It comes in several guises: hire purchase, leasing and asset refinancing. Asset refinance is something that the Close Brothers team are experts in. It releases the value of your assets and can be used to

ease the cash flow burden. In essence, they buy the asset from you at a percentage of its value and refinance it back over an agreed period. Close Brothers Commercial Finance are unique in that they are the only company in Ireland that specialises in refinancing. Hire purchase gives companies eventual ownership of the asset at the end of the repayment term, allowing them to spread the cost of their equipment, plant or machinery through manageable instalments, thus ensuring cash flow is maintained. Leasing allows businesses the full use and benefits of an asset, but without the potential burdens of ownership as this rests with
the funder. Invoice finance is also becoming increasingly popular with businesses in the UK and Ireland. You effectively sell Close Brothers your unpaid invoices. They pay you up to 85 per cent of their value the same day you raise them, giving you instant access to the money your customers owe you. Then, when the debt is collected, they pay you the balance less an agreed fee. In addition, their online invoice discounting solution IDeal™, has proven to be a big hit with many businesses. Close Brothers’ factoring facility can release up to 85 per cent of the value of your invoices up front, while their friendly, local credit control teams will take care of

rom modest origins, Kilcooney Haulage Ltd. has developed into a tidy operation. Fronted by managing director Patrick Cliffe, who has been working in haulage for over 20 years, the County Waterford business has grown gradually over the years to carve out a real niche for itself in the haulage of timber and machinery, also offering a sideline in the sale and distribution of firewood. Reflecting on the genesis of the family business, Pauline Cliffe notes: “My father, Patrick, set the company up in March, 2007, having worked as a sole trader for many years prior to that.” Today, Patrick oversees a fleet of six lorries, all of which are Volvos: the

fleet comprises two rigids with trailers and grab arms plus four artics with skeletal trailers (for hauling timber lengths) and a lowloader for transporting machinery. Firewood can be delivered by the lorry load consisting of four bays of timber, by the bay, split car trailer loads or, alternatively, the customer can collect it themselves at the Kilcooney Haulage depot. Through every facet of the operation, a customer-focused service is provided and the management at Kilcooney Haulage has always held the belief that customer needs are of absolute importance. They go out of their way at all times to ensure that a solution is provided to exact customer satisfaction and their entire team is committed to meeting these targets. This explains why such a high percentage of their business is generated through repeat custom and referrals. Patrick Cliffe is very much a hands-on managing director and he still gets behind the wheel himself on a regular basis. With decades of experience and a keen understanding of the industry, Patrick provides an unrivalled service to a growing list of satisfied customers in the immediate locality and beyond. In terms of catchment area, most of the business would be conducted in Waterford and into Clonmel, but all of Munster is covered if and when requested. On the haulage side of things, the greater part of

the work is for Coillte and Southern Forestry Enterprises Ltd., delivering timber into factories and sawmills on their behalf. Kilcooney Haulage Ltd. employ their own inhouse mechanic, who looks after all the maintenance and servicing needs of their fleet, while McCarthy Commercials in Watergrasshill, Co. Cork will be called upon “if it’s something major”. Pauline is pleased to report that Kilcooney Haulage are so far managing to fend off the worst effects of the economic recession that’s gripping the nation – and the transport sector in particular – as they still have a steady flow of business all year around. “We’re keeping our heads above the water,” she states. As for the future, she anticipates a period of consolidation for the family business, with a quest for further growth very unlikely for the time being as they are pretty much at their optimal size at present considering the economic conditions that prevail not to mention the high cost of overheads – most notably diesel – and the uncertainty this can cause: “We have a nice tidy operation at the minute and I think we will be staying small enough,” she says. “We’re happy enough with the six trucks and we’d be happy to maintain things as they are. Fuel costs have risen so much in the last couple of years that it simply wouldn’t be viable to run a bigger fleet. We’re going to concentrate on preserving what we

have. “As well as the timber, we also move harvesting machines from forest to forest within Munster and our lowloader trailer is capable of carrying any kind of machinery. “Going forward, our goal is to maintain our ties with Coillte and Southern Forestry Enterprises and to keep the show on the road.” As well as transporting timber for others, Kilcooney Haulage Ltd. have also diversified into selling timber themselves, predominantly as firewood. “In the last couple of years, we have started purchasing timber and selling it on to small commercial businesses and residential customers as firewood,” Pauline confirms. “We would have a lot of residential customers who buy firewood from us by trailer loads and this side of the business has almost taken on a life of its
own, complementing our main line of work perfectly.” With an excellent record in Health & Safety and all legislation and regulations complied with to the letter of the law, Kilcooney Haulage Ltd. is providing an dependable, efficient and affordable service to a growing band of satisfied customers.

the origins of the company and of the impact that this year's events had on their customers. “It was terrible to see so many animals perish. We know how close farmers can be to their stock as we come from a farming back ground our self and at the end of their day this was their livelihood that they were watching dying and there was nothing they could do about it,” said AnnMarie, who is based in the company's headquarters in Tempo, Co Fermanagh. “There was just no way of getting the fodder to the animals and it really was a devastating time for the farmers. We were called out to a lot of farms and it was a busy time for us, but we were determined to ease the burden on the farmers by offering them a prompt and efficient service.” McGirr Haulage is geared up to remove fallen stock from any farm within two working days after a booking having been received. The NI Agriculture Minister revealed the decision to fund a fallen stock scheme and hardship package for farmers is welcome news for the industry. DARD agreed an aid package worth up to £5m to help those who lost livestock in the heavy snowfalls. That’s what we have found, anyway.” McGoldrick Transport has come a long way since PJ started out as a livestock haulier in 1991. “My first truck was a TK Bedford and I was hauling livestock to different places. My background was in farming and that’s where it all started from. Then, about six months later, I brought a Scania 112 which was used mainly to haul pigs to the bacon factory in Edenderry, Co. That work dried up during the recession, but things are picking up on that front again and we’ve been back working for Creagh Concrete for the past three months or so. “In the early years, we also transported timber frame housing kits for Younger Homes and that also helped to get us established.” Nowadays, PJ operates a fleet of six trucks (five artics and one rigid) and 20 trailers, which are predominantly flatbed. Derry, Northern Counties CoOperative Enterprises in Swatragh, Co. Derry, Northern Ireland Seed Potatoes in Kilrea, Co. Derry, Ward Contracts, Gulladuff, Maghera, Co. The likes of Four Dee, BSG, Northern Counties CoOperative and Northern Ireland Seed Potatoes have been very good to us. Four Dee are a steel fabrication company who make parts for Powerscreen. We’ve been working for BSG for 20 years. We are delighted to be able to transport equipment and products for them.” During the summer and autumn months, the McGoldrick fleet can often be seen carrying hay and straw for farmers. They also transport coal and other solid fuels. “The hay and straw transport side of things goes back to our farming roots. We are particularly busy around the harvest time, hauling bales of hay and straw to different parts of the country.
Part of the impressive McGoldrick Transport fleet
It’s seasonal work and we’re lucky to have it. “In addition, we transport a lot of fertiliser for Northern Counties Co-Operative and potato seeds for Northern Ireland Seed Potatoes.” PJ reveals how his firm has been happy to concentrate on the Irish market after deciding to end its UK service a number of years ago. “We stopped the crosschannel haulage as it became too much hassle, especially after the Foot and Mouth outbreak in 2001. There were too many holdups travelling over and back as the trucks had to be scrubbed clean going and coming from Britain, while all the paperwork had to be in order or there was no chance of making the crossing. “Downtime is something that needs to be avoided at all costs in this business as it

and give them the best possible service. The transport industry has had a rough tough, but we’ve managed to keep going thanks to the loyalty and support of our customers, and the top-class and unrivalled service we provide.”

Andrew (left) and ready to hit thRobert McCreery e road again
cCreery Livestock Transport Ltd. is one of Ireland’s premier specialists in the secure, prompt and affordable transportation of sheep and cattle. Robert McCreery reflects on the genesis of the company, which has developed a fantastic reputation for itself in a relatively-short space of time: “I set the business up myself 15 years ago,” he notes. “I started off with a tractor and trailer carrying sheep into factories in
M
Donegal and then I started travelling longer distances – taking livestock from Donegal to Dublin and beyond. I started bringing lambs to Kepac and ewes over to England. “We take a lot of purebred pedigree stock and milk stock over to the UK and then we bring other stock – like bulls, for example – back to Ireland.” As well as cattle and sheep, Robert also has the capacity to transport pigs, if required, though this part of the market is fairly quiet at the moment.
IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS
Crucially, Robert has a good working relationship with Andrew Ewing of AJ Ewing in Scotland and this partnership allows him to provide farmers in Ireland with a service above and beyond the call of duty. “Andrew works with pedigree purebred stock and he has a staging post over there. We can rest the animals up there until they are ready to come over to Ireland. “I’m over to the UK on a regular basis collecting stock for Irish farmers who have purchased them from sales and marts. Andrew can hold them and test them and get all the paperwork done. Then I will collect them from him and bring them into Ireland and deliver them to the farms here.” McCreery Livestock Transport also delivers fodder – hay, straw and silage – from the south of Ireland into Donegal. “This year past there was a severe shortage of fodder here in Ireland due to the weather and it had to be brought into the country from the UK. We imported it from England and Scotland and it was urgently required to keep the farmers in business. We were extremely busy with that for a month or
two.” Fleet-wise, Robert operates a Volvo FH13 and a MAN Diesel, coupled with Pezzaioli livestock trailers. He also has a small Volvo rigid, which is used for bringing livestock to his own yard. At the moment, he’s in the market for a new truck. “We’ve just sold one off and I’m in the market for a good new or second-hand lorry, which will be the third one in the fleet,” he reveals. When it comes to maintaining and servicing the vehicles, a lot of the work is done in-house. “We do most of the work ourselves but one of the Volvos is still only one year old, so it’s still under contract,” the company boss notes. Robert McCreery is very much the archetypal handson owner-driver operator, rolling up his sleeves and getting behind the wheel himself. In terms of personnel, he also provides employment to his brother and one other driver, while his father also helps out with the running of the family business. Also called upon regularly to shift machinery for farmers, Robert is pleased to report that he scarcely has a quiet day: “There’s always

something,” he confirms. “To give you an idea of how busy we are, we put 160,000km on the new lorry in the first year, so we’re covering plenty of ground! There’s always something that needs to be moved – if it’s not cattle or sheep, then it’s hay or straw or machinery. We have all our bases covered and we’re very flexible. There’s a lot of weekend work in this line of business … it’s seven days a week really.” Soaring overheads are a constant battle for everyone involved in the transportation industry and Robert admits that the ridiculous price of diesel is far from helpful: “Diesel is definitely the

biggest killer at the minute,” he comments. “You could easily go through £3,500 to £4,000 a week on diesel alone and this is a major outlay. There’s no stability and you never know when it’s going to jump up. But the fluctuations can have a major effect on the business – a 5% swing either was is a major change. “Everything else seems to be creeping up as well,
but you can’t get the rates up. There seems to be taxes on everything and it seems to be the man that’s working and trying to earn an honest living who gets hit every time.” Another difficulty is the fact that livestock can only be brought off this island to England via Larne or Belfast, which can present some additional logistical problems. “Even if you are going from Cork to the south of England, you still have to go through Larne or Belfast,” says

Robert. “There are no boats that will take livestock across to England. You can take it from Rosslare to Cherbourg, but that’s not much use when your destination is in the UK. It can mean a much longer haul than you’d like and this means you have to bring a second man in the lorry with you because you have to get
the animals to their destination as quickly and as safely as possible.” And the comfort of the livestock throughout the journey is of paramount importance. “There are people jumping on the bandwagon now and taking up livestock haulage now and they don’t understand how to
Donegal-based Robert McCreery says “there will always be livestock to shift”
handle animals,” Robert continues. “I was raised with them and worked with them at home all my life and we still farm livestock at home. There has to be a high level of comfort for the animals while they are being transported. “You have to know how to handle them and how to load them. You need to get them safely in and out of the pen and you have to know not to mix big with small etc. This isn’t a business you can just suddenly jump into – you really have to know what you’re doing.” Are there many cowboys circling? “There are a lot of them moving in and cutting prices on the genuine haulier and then not doing the job properly. It’s all fine and well paying some cowboy a pittance to do the job on the cheap, but if you are going to do this right, then you have to charge an appropriate price. A new trailer costs in the region of £125,000 and you
have to charge proper rates to get his investment back.” “There’s also a serious amount of paperwork these days – legislation, permits, licences, rules and regulations. There are more regulations in livestock than if you were going to go out and drive a busload of people. The technology is unbelievable, too. You can monitor and chance the temperature in the trailers and you can print all these details off.” Looking to the future, Robert is optimistic: “There will always be livestock to shift,” he concludes. “People have to eat. The animals have to eat, too, so fodder will always be needed as well. We are getting a good bit of work at the moment and, as long as we continue to do things properly and to look after our customers, then I’m confident that we’ll remain busy.”

handballed on and off trucks, not only was it a time consuming exercise, but it also led to a great deal of injury. From his days as a helper on a Calor truck, Malachy knew the importance of the helper as a driver would never manage a delivery on his own.
“Unless you had a helper on a truck, there was no point in going out with deliveries as the driver would never manage on his own. It was something that always gnawed at me. I worked on a system where deliveries could be made safer and also quicker. “I brought this to Calor, but
they reckoned that there was no need for a change. I persevered for a few years.“ So I patented a pallet system where all the bottles were loaded on pallets and then put on trucks that had forklifts mounted on them. “Calor are the biggest suppliers of gas in the 32 counties, so you can just imagine the customer base that they have. We look after a certain area in the north and through the five trucks that we have on the road, we cover many shops and forecourts. It is up to us to make sure that all deliveries are made on time, otherwise Calor will just get someone else to do it, simple as that.” With so many years’ experience in the industry, Malachy knows what it takes to survive as he’s seen it all before. “We just have to tighten our belts like everyone else and work hard to maintain the standard that our customers have become used too. Times have certainly changed and there are a lot more overheads now than there use to be, but you just have to keep on top of them and hopefully the industry will get stronger again.”
