McHale Plant Sales hits 2014 with a new mower range

The Agrostroj mower

Zetor, Komatsu and Merlo distributor McHale Plant Sales of Birdhill has returned to the mower market with the Czech-manufactured Agrostroj ZTR165 tractor-mounted drum mower. The twin-drum, three-knives-per-drum ZTR165 is being marketed through their nationwide Zetor dealer network. Specifications include a 163cm working width, 450kg weight, 40/53 power requirement and 540rpm PTO speed. Dimensions range from 1442mm (length), 3140mm (width) and 1150 (height). Operational features include spring compensation and safety breakaway system.

Nugent Trailers success Down Under

Nugent Trailers has announced Bindoon Tractors Pty Ltd as its ‘Approved Distributor’ in Australia. Bindoon Tractors Pty Ltd was founded in 2004 by Shaun Oliver, is now run by Shaun and his wife Jackie supported by a team of loyal staff, all of whom pride themselves in understanding the needs of its customers. Founded in 1984, in Tyrone, Nugent has been dedicated to the development and manufacture of professional trailers and agricultural equipment. With 28 years of successful operation behind it Nugent has not only been a pioneer in the Agricultural Equipment and Trailer industries but has earned a solid reputation for quality, performance and innovation throughout the industries. Nugent Trailers has introduced its latest addition to Trailer Suspension, the Parabolic Equaliser. Although parabolic springs have had superior strength characteristics to other forms of suspension systems, trailer manufacturers have long been trying to overcome the shortcomings of the traditional parabolic spring suspension system. Nugent Trailers has applied automotive design philosophy, to develop this innovative solution which utilises the extended load carrying capacity and durability of the Parabolic Spring Suspension. By inserting a secondary rubber damper between the chassis along with a unique pivot slipper plate, this creates an additional suspension element and ensures the springs are now fully engaged on both the compression and rebound cycle to cancel out vibration and drastically reduce suspension chatter. The Parabolic Equaliser with its additional damping effect, aids in reducing the stresses on the chassis, the body frame, tow couplings and limits shock waves that may be transmitted to the tow vehicle. With Nugents unique Patented Parabolic Equaliser enhancing the Parabolic Spring Suspension, you have all the advantages of parabolics, but now with the additional benefits associated with suspension axles – all in one system! “We are very excited to have Nugent Trailers on board as part of the Bindoon range,” said Shaun Oliver, Owner Bindoon Tractors Pty Ltd. Nugent has been around for over 28 years as a manufacturer of professional trailers and agricultural equipment and I think it’s fair to say that so far they have exceeded our expectations in every area. We work with other quality trailer manufacturers but have found that Nugent Trailers flexibility to accommodate the legislation for importing trailers into Australia together with its ability to cater for large overseas haulage has made it a perfect fit for our business”. Zetor targets continued growth

Zetor distributors McHale Plant Sales is to intensify its sales effort this year with the aim of achieving a further growth in market share for the third year in succession. Following the redrawing of their Zetor dealer network, with a number of new appointments made and more yet to come, the company is preparing the way for the arrival of two important new models that their managing director Michael McHale says ‘will underpin Zetor’s market growth, this year and next’. Slated for launch this year is the new, more powerful 150HD Forterra which is due here in the Summer. Following later in the year will be the all-new Maxterra whose development is now at an advanced stage. These come on the back of the recent launch of the 80hp Major and continuing demand for their Proxima and Forterra HSX models. Within the months ahead, a national Zetor Road Show will see a series of open days and events take place across the dealer network, details of which will be released when final dates are arranged.

New John Deere balers & mower-conditioners at Grassland

A new John Deere 800 Series mower-conditioner plus three new 400 Series fixed chamber round balers, including a wrapping baler model, can be seen working for the first time at this year’s Grassland & Muck 2014 event at Stoneleigh in May. The 830 centre-pivot mower-conditioner is available in working widths of 3 or 3.5m, with a choice of impellers or adjustable rubber rollers for the conditioning process. As an exclusive feature, the modular cutterbar allows high-speed mowing, and has been engineered to duplicate the load conditions of a self-propelled machine. The mower’s balanced design and high ground clearance also increase field performance, while a new floating suspension system allows the machine to closely John Deere round baler follow ground contours. The 830 is equipped with six discs and 58 preloaded tines, which significantly increase capacity and crop flow under varying harvesting conditions. Even in heavy and wet crops and at high working speeds, the parallelogram design of the conditioning hood maintains the optimum distance between the impeller tines or rollers and the hood at all times. The F440R round baler and C440R wrapping baler are suitable for large livestock farms and contractors who produce more than 3000 bales per season and focus on silage production. These are premium specification balers with long-life components, and have been specially designed to operate well in wet silage conditions. There is a choice of 2 or 2.2m pick-ups feeding a high capacity inline MaxiCut HC rotor with 13 or 25 knives. In addition to the rotor, these machines utilise a number of other components from the 900 Series variable chamber round baler, including a five tine bar pick-up with heavy-duty bearings, and a full width drop-floor system which enables the operator to remove blockages instantly, from the tractor cab. Cab monitoring and control systems include a GreenStar Display 1800 or new Implement Display 1100. The F440M round baler is a multi-purpose machine aimed at small to medium size farms. Designed to produce between 1000 and 3000 bales of hay, silage or straw per season, this model offers a choice of 2m RotoFlow HC or MaxiCut HC 13knife rotors, and is available in MultiCrop or Silage Special versions. It also features the 900 Series baler’s high performance feeding system, new driveline and rotor, stronger shielding, wider and bigger tyres and other improved components. All three 400 Series machines offer a choice of CoverEdge or Edge to Edge netwrap or double twine wrapping systems.

McHale sees silage use for Komatsu Wheel loader

Following a successful showing at the Spring Farm Machinery Show in Millstreet, farm machinery distributor McHale Plant Sales has received a number of orders from silage contractors for their Komatsu WA320PZ-6 wheel loader. The company claims the unit is proving popular in the agricultural sector due to Komatsu Wheel loader its speed, high production performance and low fuel cost in comparison to its rivals. Operationally, the WA320 comes fitted with a 3.2-tonnes bucket which can be released and replaced with a 14 ft wide fold out rake, depending on use. Aside from Komatsu, McHale is better known amongst farmers as national distributors of Zetor tractors and Merlo telehandlers whose range includes the Multifarmer handler-cum-tractor hybrid.

Yard work transformed by Massey Ferguson compact tractor with shuttle box

4

The dedicated yard tractor used by Martin Dairy Ltd gets very little respite during the time that it is working for the Martin family partnership, which farms 650ha of grass and arable land near Bodmin, Cornwall. Currently changed every year with more than 3,000 hours on the clock, the tractor responsible for keeping the 800-cow dairy unit’s yards and cubicle passages scraped clean is a 46hp MF 1547 with air-conditioned cab and DynaQPS transmission, the latter incorporating both PowerShuttle and Power Shift functions. Purchased for the first time by Martin Dairy Ltd in 2012 on the recommendation of local dealer, Alan Snow Ltd, the MF 1547 sits at the top of Massey Ferguson’s 1500 Series compact tractor range, which spans the power band from 19.5hp to 46hp. Although the MF 1547 can be specified with a foldable ROPS frame, business co-partner, Richard Martin, pointed out that a cab provides a more comfortable and quieter operator environment, an important factor due to the long hours that the tractor is asked to work. “Having established that a cabbed MF 1547 could pass safely beneath our lowest door openings and roofs, there was no likelihood that our new yard tractor would be specified without a cab,” he said. “The business uses a further seven Massey Ferguson tractors ranging from 90hp to 255hp on its forage production and arable cropping operations. Of our eight Massey tractors, the MF 1547 does easily the highest number of hours, often in the worst of weathers, so needs to be as highly specified as the rest. It also has to shift large amounts of solid and liquid manure every day, so reliability is essential.” The DynaQPS transmission’s Power Shift function is actuated by a pair of push buttons on the range-change lever, enabling the driver to shift up or down through all four speeds in each of the tractor’s three main ranges without touching the clutch. “In the past, our yard tractors have been somewhat of a compromise, being either elderly or a bit on the large size,” explained Richard. “As herd numbers steadily increased, so did the time spent by the tractor cleaning the yards and cubicle passages. This led inevitably to clutch issues, causing big problems when the tractor was out of action for a day or more. “We needed a cost-effective, sensibly-sized solution and Massey Ferguson dealer, Alan Snow Ltd, came up with the answer in the shape of the MF 1547 with DynaQPS transmission. At a stroke, clutch use was eliminated for all yard-based operations. The only time we ever need to touch the clutch pedal now is when changing between high, medium and low ranges.” To protect the front of the tractor, Martin Dairy Ltd has fitted a modified loader grille guard. Other than that, the tractor is to standard specification, equipped with optional cleated agricultural tyres instead of the low-profile turf tyres normally associated with tractors of this size, commonly seen working within horticulture and on golf courses and sportsgrounds. “From our viewpoint, the MF 1547 tractor has proved a success,” commented Richard. “We work all of our tractors hard and, size for size, no tractor works harder or for longer hours than our current yard tractor. We are now onto our second one and have had no issues with reliability or its ability to do the job. The fact that it’s a Massey Ferguson supported by a first-class local dealer simply The Massey Ferguson compact provides added peace of mind.” IRISH TRACTOR & AGRI

German contractors like to drive Fendt

40 percent of contractors in Germany drive a Fendt tractor. In second place on the list of favourites is John Deere, followed by Case-IH, Deutz and New Holland. More than 40 percent (%) of German contractors worked with a Fendt tractor in their businesses in 2013. In the previous year, Fendt was also the most widely used brand amongst German contractors. The German tractor brand Fendt (40.4 percent) and the US brand John Deere (18.1 percent) are most frequently cited as the first, second or third preferred brand in German contracting enterprises. The brands Case-IH, Deutz and New Holland follow in the third to fifth places. These results correspond to those of the last market survey from 2012.Nearly two of ten contractors want to invest in a new or used tractor this year. The greatest interest here was in the brands Fendt (44.4 %) and JohnDeere (27.8 %). A further result of the survey: The more tractors that are already present in a contracting business, the higher the percentage of investment plans for a new or used tractor. Contractors with 20 or more tractors have the most plans to invest. Of these, 42.9 percent want to buy a new tractor.

New Holland cycle to Tipperary

New Holland fundraiser thanks hospitals by cycling over land and sea

A New Holland employee raised over £8,000 on a charity cycle ride that crossed the Irish Sea to thank two hospitals for their support when his son tragically died during pregnancy. James Ashworth and his wife, Alissa (29), who live near Epping, were devastated when a 12-week scan showed their unborn son, Billy, was suffering several fatal abnormalities. He died in February 2013. The couple were so grateful for the help they received from the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow and the University College Hospital London that James formed a six-man cycling team with the aim of collecting £4,000. With the support of family, friends, colleagues and the New Holland dealer network they smashed through the original target to more than double the total. They successfully pedaled 350 road miles in five days: starting from Harlow, Essex, crossing the Irish Sea, and finishing at Carrick-on-Suir, Co Tipperary. Joining James (39), who works as General Sales Manager England and Wales for agricultural machinery manufacturer New Holland, were Simon Parrish, Mark Reed, James Conway, Maurice Conway and Leo Commins. James said: “From the moment that we found out about Billy's condition, we received fantastic support from the teams at the Princess Alexandra Hospital Harlow and the University College Hospital London. “We wanted to help them continue that great work with even more couples and that was the inspiration behind the bike ride. It was tough going at times but the cause we were doing it for kept us going.” He added: “The support we received from everyone involved and the donations that just kept coming helped to push us well over our target meaning that the cycle ride will deliver even more help to care for others who find themselves in similar circumstances to Alissa and I.” Proceeds from the Bike for Billy charity cycle ride were shared between the Neonatal Unit in Harlow and the Fetal Medicine Unit at University College Hospital London.bearings.

Kildare grower “picks his own” Hardi sprayer

Paul Brophy runs an unusual farm in some respects, from its base close to Naas in Co. Kildare. The original home farm was a mixed beef / tillage enterprise, but Paul decided to make some changes. Today, Paul Brophy Produce is the largest producer of Broccoli in the country, supplying directly to Supermarkets and the Wholesale trade. Managing the farm for Paul, is a young man, Pat Smyth, who did his Horticultural training in Warrenstown College, up in Co. Meath. “We grow around 400 acres of Brassicas here, mostly Broccoli plus white and green cabbage,” said Pat. “In addition we grow around 250 acres of cereals. So, as you can see we are in the fields often and have different conditions to contend with. We also need to use fresh land for Brassica production every year to prevent disease such as Club Root. This means that rented land under crop can be widespread so we needed good capacity and some additional features in a new sprayer. We already had experience with the Hardi Air System - it’s really good at getting into and below the crop - so had decided on this system again”. “The Trailed 3300 litre Commander with a 24 Metre Air Boom was our final choice because of overall weight and capacity. We added a suspended axle to reduce the shock loads on the boom, plus hydraulic brakes for safety. We specified the “Touch the Future” HC9500 Control Panel for Guidance, Auto-Section Control, Data Logging, Report generating and Automated Steering”. “The new DynamicFluid4 Liquid System is now exactly what we need, the fluid on/shut off is instant” says Pat. “And the way the boom is plumbed we can select via the tractor’s GPS system where to spray and where to shut off. This function can be easily programmed once you have used it once or twice. The SafeTrack Steering System ensures the boom is always at 90 degrees to the tramline so no double spraying at turns and no overlapping. “Because we moved to a 24 metre boom we automatically got two additional rows of crop, so that was the first bonus. It’s fitted with the Auto Height system which keeps the wide boom parallel to the ground, and here you have Ultrasonic sensors to measure the height above the crop. It adjusts itself to maintain the setting you want. We can spray even on windy days and are sure to get good penetration even into the growing Broccoli, say for pest control. In cereals it’s also great as the wind forces the crop to move, giving real good underleaf cover, with no missed targets. We now know the system and can often cut down on overall liquid application and indeed also on overall chemical usage. These are all time and money saving concepts and give us better control of the growing crop.” This Boom Flush facility and indeed a complete washing system for the outside of the tank are fitted as standard on this Commander. The water for this operation comes from a clean water tank mounted just over the sprayer axle”. “We also got LED lights fitted for night spraying” says Pat “as we do operate at night as well as very early morning. These lights ensure that we can see the spray pattern should a blockage occur. “This seldom happens” says Pat “as the self cleaning filtration system is also special. “We fitted a quick filling system and incorporated Hardi’s Auto Fill as well. This means you can preset the sprayer to fill the required amount of water and it will shut off when completed. You then add your chemicals and the unit is ready”.

Case IH Maxxum CVX makes its working debut in Ireland

The first Case IH Maxxum CVX EP tractor in Ireland made its working debut following the start of commercial production at the company’s St. Valentin factory in Austria during November. The Maxxum CVX is the first four-cylinder Case IH tractor to incorporate a Constantly Variable Transmission. With holding tanks full after prolonged wet conditions throughout the winter, the 130hp Maxxum 130 CVX was put to work on Michael Scott’s farm in Armagh, where full use was being made of the first decent spell of weather in many weeks to spread slurry on an area of light land. The Maxxum CVX has generated enormous interest since a pre-production model was seen in December during an open day at Mid-Louth Tractors’ new depot in Ashbourne, Dublin. With six-cylinder Case IH Puma CVX EP models from 131hp to 228hp and Magnum CVX EP models from 260hp to 370hp already proving popular with technology-minded farmers who value the benefits which this advanced transmission provides, Case IH is confident that its appeal will quickly extend to 110hp - 130hp tractors. Providing infinitely-variable forward speeds up to 50kph, the transmission is ideal for all applications, allowing precise control over travel speed for field operations. It also enables fast, economical road transport, with 50kph reached at just 1750erpm and 40kph at 1600erpm. The Active Stop Control facility holds the tractor safely in the stop position, even on hills, without having to operate the clutch. The 130 CVX is the most powerful of three Maxxum CVX models, which also include the 110hp Maxxum 110 CVX, and 121hp Maxxum 120 CVX. All three incorporate ‘Power Management’ which provides up to 32hp more in transport, hydraulic and PTO applications, together with Automatic Productivity Management (APM), which automatically reduces engine speed when power demand is low to optimise fuel efficiency. Also standard is Idle Speed Management, which cuts engine speed from 850rpm to 650rpm 30 seconds after the driver leaves the cab. Providing one of the most comfortable and quietest (71dB(A)) working environments of any tractor on the market, Maxxum CVX models incorporate the same ergonomic controls as larger Case IH models and can be equipped with AFS Pro 300 or AFS Pro 700 touch-screen monitors, making them ideally suited to AFS precision farming applications. The extremely versatile hydraulic system provides a high lift capacity to further enhance the all-round capabilities of the new Maxxum CVX models.

Steyr Presents Tailor-Made Protection Kit for Forestry applications

An innovative full-protection concept for forest work is now available for the new Steyr Multi tractor. The new forestry protection frame comprises a modular concept which can be individually adapted to suit the conditions in which the forestry tractor is being used. The forestry protection frame thus provides the tractor with a tailor-made protection kit, thereby offering maximum safety for man and machine. Thanks to the modular system, which is being implemented for the first time on the Steyr Multi forestry tractor, a range of different, highly practical protection levels are available. The basic specification for forest work comprises a solid belly-pan, which protects the engine, transmission and rear axle, as well as the fuel and hydraulic oil tanks. Supplemented by side guards, the engine and hydraulic assemblies are ideally protected against damage. The forestry frame for the cab has a 4-pillar design and is equipped with reinforced mounting points. Another new feature on the Steyr Multi forestry tractor is a shatterproof rear window. The use of new materials now allows the otherwise customary protective grid to be dispensed with. This provides better visibility of the rear work area when loading and skidding, for example. A further re-engineered feature is the optional hood guard, which is shaped to match the hood contours. The design affords optimum all-round visibility and offers sufficient clearance for an optional front loader with log grabbing attachment. In its basic version the forestry frame is designed with a detachable rear-view mirror, movable steps and steel cables which act as branch deflectors. Nokian Multiplus tyres are fitted as standard for forestry applications; these exert low ground pressure and minimise damage to the forest floor when working. The special Nokian tyres are mounted on reinforced forest rims with valve guards. "Our new forestry protection frame builds on Steyr's proven success concept for municipal and forestry applications. Standard tractors are ideally adapted to suit the relevant operating conditions. This now applies to our protection concept as well. Apart from maximum safety, it offers individual adaptation, high value retention and, of course, optimum benefits," explains David Schimpelsberger, the product manager responsible for developing the new protection concept. Forestry protection equipment is available for all Steyr tractor series for forestry applications with outputs ranging from 85 to 228 hp and can be ordered from the factory. IRISH TRACTOR & AGRI

business. “Transporting livestock used to be a specialised service but not any more. Competition is intense but we strive to provide the best service possible with the best trucks and trailers possible.” To this end, Trainor Transport recently invested in three new trailers and there is no looking beyond the Scania make in Declan's opinion. He is a fully fledged member of the Swedish manufacturer's fan club and the company's

fleet boasts five Scania trucks. “Scania is the only brand as far as I would be concerned. We find them good vehicles and, most importantly, reliable. Our trucks all look well and are well maintained and we strive to do all jobs to the best of our ability.” There are, however, a number of issues outside of Declan's control that are hampering Trainor Transport's efforts to do the jobs to the best of their ability. Significant rises in overheads, for example, are headaches that are shared throughout the transport industry in Ireland. “That's the biggest problem – the road tolls, vehicle tax and now you have to pay to pass through England which is another obstacle along with the cost of diesel. I think the fuel rebate in the Republic is a joke as well, I buy my diesel in France.” Against the backdrop, it's no surprise to hear Declan reveal that consolidation of the business is his main priority at this point in time.

We dropped into the Westport depot to take a closer look at this long-standing plant and agricultural machinery supplier.

A family-run business established by brothers Dominic and Padraic Mulchrone, Mulchrone Bros Ltd. has been offering its customers excellent products and an outstanding back-up service for four decades now. A household name in agricultural plant hire in the West of Ireland, they started out as agricultural contractors, carrying out work for farmers in the surrounding area. Year on year, the business grew in line with increased demand and soon they started to supply agricultural machinery as well as machines to building

contractors, local authorities and other public bodies. Serving the farming community was their main reason for going into business in the mid-seventies. Today, this still remains as one of their top priorities. In 1995, Mulchrones were awarded the Yamaha ATV agency, which they still have today. At this time they introduced the ATV to farmers in the local area and this has had a huge impact to the way farming is carried out. Mulchrone Bros Ltd. has continued to grow since then and has been appointed main dealer for a vast range of equipment covering the farming, grounds care, hire, building and local authority markets. They are agents for Kubota, NC engineering, Nugent trailers and equipment, Malone equipment, Yamaha ATV, Quad X attachments, Woods trailers, Einbock, Rocha, Belmac etc. Customers are at the very core of the business and the reputation of Mulchrone Bros has been built on a

policy of providing customers with products and services that they can rely on at all times. The business is – and always has been – 100% customerdriven. To this end, they carry a large stock of spare parts to ensure that machine downtime is kept to a minimum. Their fully-qualified service staff have garnered many years of experience in various types of machinery and can work through breakdowns in a common sense and practical way. All fitters are trained on the maintenance and service of all products supplied. Mulchrone Bros Ltd. boasts its own purpose-built workshop, which is used to keep the machines they sell in top shape. As Mulchrone Bros is a family-run business, great care is taken to ensure that the Mulchrone name continues to remain strong. There are five Mulchrones at work throughout the company (Dominic’s sons Dominic Jnr., Sean and Joe representing ht second

generation) and the family members carry out various roles from management to truck driving. The directors are fully transparent and easily contactable; they like to remain in direct touch with their customers and would know most of them on a firstname basis. They employ a staff of approximately 15 full time as well as occasional part time workers to help out during busy peaks. Mulchrone Bros Ltd. has been appointed main agent for Nugent trailers and equipment; Woods Trailers; Quad X equipment; and Blaney equipment as well as a vast range of other top quality suppliers. They have been supplying equipment from these suppliers for over ten years in each case so they have built up the necessary knowledge and experience to help customers choose the right item for their needs. Mulchrones were appointed Kubota M series agents at the end of 2004 and since have been appointed to sell Kubota L series tractors, Kubota RTVs and grass care equipment. Taking on this agency was a natural progression as the directors were fully aware of the fact that Kubota had a good

reputation for quality and reliability and that any product they offered would be in a league of its own. They introduced the tractors to customers, holding a local launch day, attending local shows, local advertising etc.

Since then, they have sold many Kubota M series tractors and these have built a reputation for easy operation, economical running costs, great manoeuvrability and a good resale value.

The company’s stores carry a full range of spares for all types of machines from ATVs to excavators. They carry a large stock of Kubota spares and consumables such as filters, oils, glass etc. and often have in stock that unusual part even for an older tractor or excavator. They also run a hire business which supplies excavators form 0.8-21 tonne, dumpers from Ÿ10tonne, load-alls, skid

steers, trailers, rollers etc, the list goes on and on. Mulchrone Bros demonstrate to their customers their commitment to the machines they sell by using those machines themselves. This shows the customer that machines, tractors and attachments can be put through hard work on hire and contracting basis with no problem. A one-stop shop for all your agricultural machinery needs, covering all of Connacht and beyond, Mulchrone Bros also supply a vast range of tractor, ATV and excavator attachments from trailers, mowers, loader attachments, log splitters, power boxes to name but a few. They also supply a full range of trailers for cars, vans, jeeps etc. Customers can come in and look around to see all the stock. Mulchrones like to carry as many items as possible as they feel it is impossible to imagine an item seen on a page. They’d rather allow customers to see firsthand the features of machines, drive them and

see how they function and feel. When a customer purchases a new machine for example a Kubota M108S - they can perhaps further their relationship with the customer by supplying a trailer. This leads to the customer getting a better deal than having to travel to a different agency for a different brand of trailer. This works across the range in that a person who buys a Yamaha ATV for example may need a trailer to transport it, which Mulchrone Bros can supply. Featuring a website which will be updated shortly and a facebook page which further increases awareness of the business, Mulchrone Bros have attended many local shows throughout the year including the Bonniconlon show and the Connaught Agri show. Twenty-fourteen is a landmark year for this impressive family operation ‌ and for its customers. One gets the distinct impression that there are many more to come!

A stellar service since 1986

at Dunne Agri Contractors has been providing a topclass agricultural contracting service to customers in the greater Toomevara area of North Tipperary for the past 27 years. We met up with the man himself to discuss the past, present and future of this father-and-son business. Operating out of Kilcarey, on the outskirts of Nenagh in County Tipperary, Pat Dunne specialises in all aspects of agricultural contracting – silage, slurry, reseeding etc. Though the economy has made life difficult for everybody in Ireland over the past decade, he is glad to report that he’s been very busy for the last two or three years. Pat grew up on the family farm and worked for a few other contractors before opting to set up his own operation in ’86. He developed the business from modest beginnings and gradually built up his own fleet of tractors and associated agricultural machinery. “I suppose silage would be the main thing but we do everything,” he notes. “We don’t cut maize but any other work that can be done on a farm, we will do it – slurry, ploughing, planting etc.” Pat says he has no regrets about deciding to go out on his own. Reflecting on the genesis of the business, he says: “When I look back, it was a good move … but an expensive one! Things have become dearer in the last ten years and the way of doing the work has also changed a lot. The seasons have changed, too!” Pat’s main catchment area is Toomevara and he also works quite a bit in Silvermines and Portroe - generally all around the Nenagh area. It’s very much a father-and-son operation these days with Pat’s son Damien having joined him in the family business. During the summer, work is generated for another five or six lads. “You’d be busy enough, now,” says Pat. “There’s always something to keep you going. The slurry stops from October to January but you’d

have hedge-cutting and things like that to do during the winter.” In terms of fleet, Pat operates five of his own tractors – all John Deere, bought locally from Templetuohy Farm Machinery Ltd. “You have to keep a fresh fleet. Running old machines doesn’t work for me. The newer you buy, the better. You’ll get the best out of them when you have them from new. We tend to do all our own

This year, we have at least been able to plan two or three days ahead and it has worked out better. But having wet grass for two years was a big problem.” Looking to the future, Pat reveals that he has nothing particularly ambitious up his sleeve: “We’ll

Providing a voice for farm contractors

immy O’Brien has been running his own agricultural contracting business in Mallow, Co. Cork for nearly 30 years. He is also a founder-member and director of the Association of Farm Contractors in Ireland (FCI), which is a representative body of Irish

farm contractors.

FCI was established two years ago by Timmy and fellow farm contractor Peter Farrelly from Kells, Co. Meath, and has gained considerable momentum since then with its membership currently standing at around 200. The Association, which held its first conference in

Monastervin, Co. Kildare in November 2012, was formed to give agricultural contractors a voice at Government and EU level. Its other objectives are to promote good contractor / farmer relationships; to promote the benefits of a good agricultural contracting service; to provide members with knowledge and courses to help them run their business; to promote a good working relationship between contractors. In addition, FCI aims to provide a fair playing field for contractors north and south of the border regardless of their size. Owned and run by its members for its members, FCI aims to make local branches as active as possible and to facilitate group discussion and possible group action on issues that affect their businesses. “We’ve had a great response from contractors,” Timmy enthuses. “Peter Farrelly and I felt the agricontracting sector wasn’t been recognised and that IRISH TRACTOR & AGRI

contractors have the benefit of claiming the carbon tax back against their tax returns, thus giving them an unfair advantage over the registered contractors. “According to European legislation, there should be no carbon tax charge on agricultural work and the produce of food.” FCI has branches in Cork, Meath, Kilkenny, Wexford, Galway, Sligo, Offaly, Tipperary, Limerick, Kerry, Laois, Wicklow and Kildare, and plans to expand

Eddie hoping to steady the potato industry

I

n January, 2014, Eddie Doyle was elected chairman of the IFA’s national potato committee. We spoke to the Kilkenny man about how he intends to nurture a better working environment for growers and to heighten the profile of the humble spud, which certainly hasn’t received its fair share of good press in recent times. It’s time to set the record straight…

People who claim that potatoes are in any way bad for us are ill-formed or have a hidden agenda. That’s the contention of the IFA’s potato chairman Eddie Doyle … and I would be inclined to agree with him. After all, weren’t our ancestors all essentially raised on potatoes and what harm did it ever do them? Is obesity not a modern phenomenon? Also, should we not endorse and support an indigenous industry that is at the very heart of rural Ireland? A rhetorical question if

ever there was one! As chairman of the national potato committee, Eddie Doyle of Doyle Produce in Mooncoin, County Kilkenny intends to heighten awareness of the benefits of the potato and to help reeducate Irish people, who seem to have decided for some dubious reason that pasta and rice represent healthier options. As well as the chairman and vice-chairman (Larry Whelan), 20 other committee members sit on the national potato committee, representing all the major potato-growing counties. Membership includes two new additions from Cork – Nora Sheehan and John Griffin. “Every county is wellrepresented,” notes Eddie, who in January of this year succeeded Thomas Carpenter from Fordstown in County Meath as chairman. In a nutshell, Eddie’s new brief within the IFA’s potato committee is to represent the interests of potato growers nationwide. “At present, we are engaging regularly with merchants and we are also lobbying politicians, even though so far we are getting very poor results from the

latter. They are giving us plenty of spiel about the 2020 crop but in the meantime we are losing a serious amount of jobs in the potato- and vegetable-growing industries. “There are an awful lot of people in Ireland employed in these sectors and they deserve to have their livelihoods protected. It’s a very labour-intensive industry … here in Kilkenny alone there are approximately 300 people employed in potato and vegetable growing. And they are getting very little help from the Government.” Supermarkets aren’t much better… “The supermarkets are wiping the floor with potato and vegetable growers,” Eddie continues. “They are putting us out of business and the Government is standing idly by while they run vegetable and potato promotions, giving stuff away. Any opportunity they get to exploit the Irish potato and vegetable grower, they take it. Most of the supermarkets are good at supporting Irish, but that comes with conditions regarding the price they are willing to pay.” As growers get a smaller and smaller share of consumer price, potato

production is coming under increasing threat. It’s approaching a crisis situation and something is going to have to be done. “Growers are getting between 26% and 30% of the retail price,” says Eddie. “The supermarkets are taking a very big cut and the growers need a bit more of that margin. We are as low as ever with regards to prices, although things have picked up a little bit thanks to the export market to Poland.” In fairness to Eddie, he isn’t blind to the fact that in certain instances growers themselves are part of the

problem. “At the end of the day the grower has to do their sums and need to know the costs before they produce potatoes,” he notes. “Sometimes, they are growing without a market and they are effectively pulling the rug out from under others who have been in the industry for years. “Exports are addressing the over-supply in part but, for example, the foolishness of growers who planted Kerr Pink seed last year without first looking at where they were going to sell them was almost beyond belief. This led

to a surplus of supply and ultimately did nobody any favours.” Another factor that has severely damaged growers is the shift from 10kg bags to 7.5kg bags. “In 2007, 6% of potatoes volume-wise were being sold in 7.5 kilo bags,” says Eddie. “This year, that figure stands at 28%. Meanwhile, the volume of spuds sold in 10 kilo bags has fallen from 37% to just 9%.

“Supermarkets have succeeded in convincing consumers that they are paying less, whereas they are in fact paying more. At the same time, they have managed to remove 25% of the volume of potatoes out of the market, which – with the potato already in decline - is a serious issue. “The market is declining year on year and every time you open a paper or switch on the television it’s all rice,

pasta, pizzas, couscous and even sweet potatoes being marketed. But never the potato. “For this reason, we are embarking on a €1m marketing campaign in conjunction with growers, merchants, the Department of Agriculture and the Eu. This campaign will run for three years from 2015 and will hopefully play a key role in helping get the popularity of the potato back. “you do wonder where nutritionists are getting their information from. The reality is that the potato is much healthier than other carbs. It is the least fattening and the most nutritious. It’s listed as a superfood by the university of California and is a natural product with no additives. “The likes of ‘Operation Transformation’ and the safefood website are doing us a great disservice; like many dieticians, they are deliberately steering people away from potatoes.” Eddie Doyle has been synonymous with the agricultural sector in Ireland all his working life. He comes from a family with a rich background in farming (his late father Peter, who passed away in January, was a regular on the Irish ploughing circuit for four decades and represented Ireland four times in the World Ploughing Championships) and he is determined to do everything

he can to improve the plight of the potato grower during his two-year term (with an option of two more years) as chairman of the national potato committee: “From the growers’ perspective, I will concentrate on getting growers to grow for existing markets and put time, thought and money into marketing the product before planting it and to make sure they are growing a product that consumers want. “On the merchant and supermarket side, I want to get them all to wear the Irish jersey and to stick rigidly to Irish products and help create a sustainable business that we can all make a living from. This is a great Irish product; wholesome and nutritious. We have a good product and we need merchants to stick by us and not to manipulate the market. Only this way can we have a strong industry going forward. “Remember, when everybody ate potatoes, meat and vegetables 30 years ago, obesity was not a problem. The potato will fill kids up and it won’t put weight on them. It is a very healthy food, Our health is the most important thing we have and the education curriculum in this country has been sadly lacking in the past. Very few of us were taught a thing at school about the single most important factor that will affect us for the rest of our lives – our diet.”

Established by Pat Lawrence, Cahir 4x4 Centre has been the jeep and tractor dealer of choice for hundreds of farmers for nearly two decades. Run by Pat, his wife Josephine and son Tommie, the company specialises mainly in used 4x4 sales, but it has also branched into new and used tractor sales in recent years. Stock is updated daily at the Cahir 4x4 Centre, which comprises a large yard, office and full service workshop situated on the Clonmel Road out of Cahir. All makes, models and prices are available to view on the garage’s excellent website, www.cahir4x4centre.ie Cahir 4x4 Centre has established a tradition of value-for-money and total dedication to customer service over the years. If you are looking for a particular type of jeep, tractor, light commercial or car, you’ll be able to sit in it at the company’s spacious premises. If you are not sure what you are looking for, there are a comprehensive range of models available to help you choose the right vehicle for your needs. All vehicles are fully checked, valeted and serviced before leaving Cahir 4x4 Centre. Pat and his team can service your 4x4 or tractor regardless of make or model. Their fullytrained mechanics will take care of your vehicle at a very reasonable price. Each service is carried out according to the manufacturer’s specification and all work is guaranteed. Everything from battery replacement to tyre installation to steering, suspension and brake systems is catered for. The Co. Tipperary-based concern has five staff members working to meet their customers’ requirements. “We have customers from all over Ireland,” Tommie Lawrence explains. “We’re one of the best known used 4x4 dealers in the country. Our three big sellers are Land Rover, Toyota Land Cruiser and Mitsubishi Pajero, which are all firm favourites with the farming community. We

also sell some new jeeps, but this only accounts for a small percentage of our business, especially since the recession began. We have something for everyone. “My father always had an interest in farming and this led to him branching into tractor sales a few years ago. We were Zetor dealers before taking on the Tumosan dealership last year. Built in Turkey, Tumosan are only new to this country and it will take time for them to get established. But there has been a fair bit of interest in them so far and we’re hopeful sales will take off in the near future.” There are 19 different Tumosan tractor models in the range being imported into Ireland, spread across five different ranges. The ranges include models from the original Tumosan Classic 8000 series, which are very similar in design to the Fiat tractors of the 1990s. They also include new models not seen in Ireland before, such as the 8100, 7100, 6100 and 4100 series tractors, with fresh new cab designs while retaining the Fiat designed three and four-cylinder engines throughout the entire range. The tractor power ranges from 95hp at the top end to 48hp for the entry level 4150 model, which comes with a roll bar. The Tumosan has a keen entry price, starting at just €25,000, while there are some extras available, including a 12x12 mechanical shuttle gearbox and air conditioning. Tommie believes the arrival of the higher power Tumosan Maxima range will entice more farmers to invest in the Turkish brand. This new tractor will be fitted with a four-cylinder turbo-charged engine that will be available at two power levels, either 115hp or 125hp. The engine will be matched to either of two gearbox

Thomas Flynn and sons Ltd. have teamed up with Dairymaster and Cookstown Dairy Services to add a full Dairymaster Service centre to their facility in The Downs, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath. In excess of €100,000 has been invested in fitting out the new Service depot which will allow farmers to avail of a full range of dairy consumables. Our in-depth knowledge of the industry allows us to provide expertise on sales, planning, drawings, installation and after care service 365 days of the year,” revealed Sean. “I use to work with the Reilly brothers in Kilberry before I decided to go out on my own. For the first few years at CDS, we initially offered service and maintenance. “It was around 1994 that we got a break in Northern Ireland as there was huge growth in the farming industry up there. Things had been fairly quiet down south here even though we were still working away, but getting into the Northern market was huge for us. “I got a contract with Dairymaster Northern Ireland to install their products and it just took off from there. machines that were on the market and it is a superior milking system to the rest,” added Sean. The level of installations in the north saw Sean open a second outlet in Ballymoney in 2010, such was the demand in Ulster. “Dairymaster milking equipment would be milking about 30% of the cows in Northern Ireland. The Dairymaster brand really sells itself and when you are providing such a quality product and backing it up with a good after sales and service team then the customer will always be happy.” Cookstown Dairy Services offer 24hr technical support to all their customers and the service team are highly trained meaning they efficiently deal with any problems that may occur. The company also has a dedicated installation team that can fit up to 20 units per week. “It takes about two years for an employee to learn what’s needed for the installation work. There is a three-week course to be taken, but the practical experience takes much longer, but all employees have the proper certificates under the Irish Milk Quality Co-operative Society Limited needed to carry out their duties.” Sean admits that there have been many changes to the industry since he started out, but it is imperative for them to remain up to date in any improvements on the systems. “I suppose the biggest change has been the use of software. The systems are increasingly becoming computerized and we are continuously learning about the latest technology used. We have a dedicated software team that look after this area. These continuous innovative products help keep us and our customers at the forefront of the dairy industry”. Cookstown Dairy Services not only install and maintain milking machines but the company offers wide range of service to its ever increasing customer base. The company supplies equipment for milking and feeding as well as scraper, aeration, wash-down and heat detection systems. They also provide water boilers/heaters for the agricultural industry as well as cluster back flushing and a wide range of second hand equipment. “We offer a comprehensive service to all our customers from initial contact to designing plans to best suit their specific requirements while offering advice and expertise on their plans. Once the plans have then been approved by the customer, a team of fitters will install the plant. We view the relationship with our customers as a long term partnership. We offer servicing support, emergency service, software support and technical support on an ongoing basis. Of course, to get the best yield from a cow, feeding is the most

important aspect of doing so and parlour feeding offers tremendous advantages to the dairy farmer as it has been proven to increase cow flow, decrease milking time and cater for the individual nutrition requirements of cows therefore increasing milk yield.Dairymaster FeedRite in parlour feeders are a very precise and convenient way to feed cows in the parlour. “We are delighted with the direction that the company is heading and opening the latest outlet just outside Mullingar will enable to try and break into the market in the midlands and further. Our aim is to continue providing a reliable service and with the quality products that we are selling, there is no reason why we can’t continue to do so.”

pecialising in potato transportation, Jeta Haulage Ltd is a family-run business which operates from the village of Clonmany in Co. Donegal. Managing director Tom Doherty explains more.

IRISH TRACTOR & AGRI

Previously trading as Doherty Transport, the company was established by Tom in 2001 and rebranded Jeta Haulage Ltd two years ago. Tom is joined in the business by his wife Libby. They have four children – Jason, Erin, Tara and Alana – the former lending a hand when he’s home from college. Tom set up the business after working as a driver for a company called Dermot Fullerton Ltd in nearby Buncrana. He takes up the story: “I drove for Fullerton’s for 12 years before they ceased trading in 2001. It was at that point that I decided to go out on my own. I got to know a lot of potato growers during my time with Fullerton’s and they have since become very good customers of mine. I’ve filled the void that was there and built on that.” Tom runs a fleet of three Volvo trucks and five trailers (three curtain-siders and two flatbeds). He employs four staff, including Russell Walker and Bernard Doherty who have been driving for the company for 12 and seven years respectively. He buys his trucks from McDonnell Commercials, who are main Volvo truck and bus dealers in Monaghan. Potato transportation accounts for approximately 95 per cent of Jeta Haulage’s business, with seasonal work such as straw and fruit & vegetable haulage accounting for the remaining five per cent. By far Tom’s largest customer is Country Crest who he supplies with potatoes from growers. Based in Lusk, Co. Dublin, Country Crest is Ireland’s leading producer of prepared meals. Their food plant is built to the highest food grade standards and great pride is taken in their ability to use their

own produce from the farm in their prepared and meal accompaniment range. The Country Crest range includes traditional prepared meals, flavoured potatoes, creamy mashes, potato croquettes and filled baked potatoes. Country Crest’s products are produced with minimal processing so that the consumer gets all the benefits of a home-cooked style natural nutritious meal. “I’ve known Michael and Gabriel Hoey (Country Crest directors) since 1991 and we are proud to be their main supplier of potatoes,” Tom says. Jeta Haulage are also Irish distributors for the Lincoln, UKbased company Emerald Produce, which specialises in supplying the produce packing business with high quality root crops. Emerald Produce has forged partnerships with some of the best potato growers in the UK and throughout the world. Through their knowledge of the seasons, Emerald is able to offer a planned, uninterrupted year-round supply. “We bring potatoes from the UK, France, Israel and other potato-growing countries into Ireland for them,” Tom explains. Potato growing has long been a way of life for many in Co. Donegal and the county even has its own distinctive potato called the Donegal Rooster. “It’s a nice floury potato which is the number one seller in Ireland. Its skin is a dark colour which can be attributed to the Donegal soil, which is darker than in other parts of the country. We distribute all the well-known types of potatoes, including Golden Wonders, Roosters and Kerr’s Pink.” While potato growing in

Donegal is largely concentrated in the border areas of St. Johnston, Carrigans, Manorcunningham and Bridge End, there are also a large number of growers further north on the Inishowen peninsula where Clonmany is located. There is a longstanding tradition of potato growing in the North-West dating back to the 1800s when people from the area travelled to Scotland to engage in ‘tattie hoking’ or potato-picking on an annual basis. The potatopicking harvest season lasted from June to October and the poverty-stricken workers, whose ages ranged from as young as 13 to 23, would travel from farm to farm in ‘squads’ containing between 20 and 30. Jeta Haulage is believed to be Ireland’s most northerly transport company. Clonmany’s location in the NorthWest of Inishowen, and 15 miles north of Buncrana, makes it the second most northerly point on the island after Malin Head. The company prides itself on its ability to offer its customers a first-class, fast and reliable service at a competitive rate. Tom IRISH TRACTOR & AGRI

Regarding the New Holland dealership, Stephen reveals: “New Holland is very much our major player and we have a long-standing association with them. We’ve had the blue tractors here since 1972 and we also took on the Ford car franchise in 1974, which

is now run by my younger brother Neil. “The New Holland harvester dealership would cover Kildare, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Laois, Carlow and parts of Tipp, while the tractor dealership covers Kildare, Kilkenny and Carlow and

parts of Wicklow and Laois.” Stephen is pleased to report that there has been a noticeable upturn in business in recent times. “It has certainly picked up a little bit and we had a very good year last year,” he says. “We were on call 24/7 during the harvest season and we were open seven days a week. When you are that busy, you can’t have too many complaints.” Nobody will ever be stuck and every effort is made to ensure that all problems are dealt with instantly. Outside of business hours, an answering machine gives a 24-hour, after-hours emergency number, which can be accessed around the clock. “We always have somebody on call,” Stephen promises. “We have five service vans and if needs be we are only too willing to send one out to make sure any problems are resolved as quickly as humanly possible. Service is everything in this line of work and we pride ourselves on offering a brilliant back-up service. You have to. Farmers invest a lot of money in these machines and the onus is on us to make sure that they get the maximum value for money.” At any given time, JR Perry Ltd. stocks a vast range of second-hand equipment, including everything from tractors and harvesters to ploughs, spreaders and sprayers, tillage equipment, grassland equipment, balers, IRISH TRACTOR & AGRI

telehandlers etc. The servicing department provides full servicing on all makes and models of machinery, while a wide range of spare parts is stocked at all times. A next-day delivery service is provided on all parts Looking to the future, Stephen says the plan is to keep providing the same stellar service for which JR Perry Ltd. has become renowned near and far: “We will be looking to consolidate. We have found a nice niche for ourselves and we’d like to hold onto that by keeping our standards up. “Everybody wants to expand but there’s no point in getting over ambitious. Of course, you are always

keeping an eye out for new ideas and new opportunities but at this point in time there is nothing too extravagant in the pipeline. If we can maintain things as they are, we will be more than happy with that. “We employ a team of 14

here at the moment and it’s a good size, so we’ll keep our sleeves rolled up and continue to provide our customers with the best machinery on the market and an excellent back-up service. “We’ve expanded the premises gradually over the

years and we are confident that we are in good hands going forward, in terms of facilities, products, f r a n c h i s e s , personnel and experience.” JR Perry has looked after its c u s t o m e r s tremendously well for over 50 years and all the signs are encouraging that they will reach many more milestones in the future. All told, this is a top-quality family concern with few – if any peers – and they have been p r o v i d i n g exceptional solutions to two and three generations of some families in the local farming communities. They are an integral part of the local community, as much a part of the landscape as the land itself.

Walmsley the way to go for tractors

W

hen it comes to purchasing new and second hand tractors you should look no further than Walmsley Tractors Ltd of Fermanagh. They boast 45 years experience in the market and know their tractors inside out.

“We pride ourselves on quality and service,” replies Managing Director Stephen Walmsley when asked: what sets Walmsley Tractors apart from its competitors? It's an approach that has stood the Co. Fermanagh based operation in goodstead for the past 45 years and, looking ahead to the future, it's very much a case of 'if it ain't broke don't fix it'. Established in 1969 by Stephen's late father Norman, Walmsley Tractors has developed a reputation for quality and reliability which is second to none and that's the reason they are retailing over

Walmsley Tractors Ltd was established in 1969

one hundred new and used tractors annually. Very much a family-run concern, the company has eight on its payroll, including Stephen's wife Alison and son Darrell, and they are the main dealer in the region for Case IH, NC, Woods, Malone & Nugent. They stock a wide and varied range of tractors, slurry tankers, slurry pumps,

dump trailers, rotary brushes, shear grabs, hydraulic link boxes, mowers, log splitters, post drivers and an extensive range of parts and accessories. The company has come along way since its humble beginnings. “My father started off the business going to England and buying second hand tractors, reconditioning and refurbishing them and selling them on in

the north and the south,” Stephen explained. “He started out here in 1969 with a small garage and a petrol station. In 2005 they were demolished and our site now has a custom built office and shop to to help meet all the needs of our clients with show space, waiting areas and meeting rooms.” Stephen added: “All our mechanics are fully factory trained. One of those, William McCutheon, has been with us for 40 years. We have a loyal and skilled staff which has contributed immensely to the growth of the business.” Walmsley Tractors specialise in quality workshop-checked used tractors. Their mechanics perform a full pre-delivery inspection on all their used tractors in their own fully equipped workshop. They also have a service van, complete with tools and parts, which enables them to provide an excellent after sales service. Their parts department, meanwhile, enables them to carry a wide range of parts in stock and offer next day delivery for an extensive further range meaning your plant will be rapidly repaired. “New tractors sales are, as always, tough. It's a very competitive market and the product has to be right. In the Case IH brand we have the right product and our used products are also top quality “We import our second hand tractors from the UK, they are fully workshop checked and serviced and retailed in all 32 counties. 10 years ago we started exporting tractors to Europe and South Africa. “There have been highs and lows as in every business but that is another string to our bow as the fella says. “We don't profess to be the cheapest but we do guarantee that when a tractor leaves our premises it is fully completed, serviced and properly checked.” The Case IH brand IRISH TRACTOR & AGRI

represents a tradition of leadership and is the culmination of great agricultural equipment companies and brands, including Case, International Harvester and David Brown, to name a few. Each of those brands has played an important role in the history and evolution of Case IH. Over the years, many things have changed, but the legendary red brand will always represent a commitment to making agricultural producers successful. As proud main dealers of Case IH, Walmsley Tractors possess an edge over their competitors. “Competition is part and parcel of this business and we are very happy with Case IH as a product and the company. “We have a lot of repeat customers who bought from us in the past and who liked the service and the back-up with provided and decided to come back to us. That's as good an indicator as you can get that we do things right.” Walmsley Tractors are also ideally suited to meet all your machinery repair and service needs. rank Flynn and his business partner James Rooney rescued Redrock out of administration in 2009 and they have been successful in restoring the renowned brand to its former glory by placing a strong emphasis on technology.

Armagh-based company Redrock Engineering, which had been in business for more than 30 years, ran into difficulties during the economic downturn and was left with no option but to enter administration. Enter Managing Director Frank and James who, in a short space time, have overseen a dramatic transformation in the company's fortunes. For instance, they inherited 28 employees but, under their watch, the company now boasts a workforce of 55. “The company was originally known as Redrock Engineering Ltd but it is now Red Rock Machinery after we purchased the entire factory, plant and equipment, brand, design, market and dealer network,” explained Frank who added that construction work is currently ongoing on a 50,000 square foot building extension at their Armagh premises. Not that Frank is taking all the credit for the company's Lazarus-like comeback – the Redrock brand was an easy sell, he points out. Ever since its establishment in 1962, the

70

Redrock name has been synonymous with quality and reliability when it comes to agricultural machinery. The company manufactures a wide range of livestock feeding and slurry handling equipment, silage and grain trailers, blockcutters, paddle feeders and specialist trailers, to the rugged Redrock dump trailers, low loaders and flat trailers. range can mix everything from large round or square bales of silage, straw and hay, to precision cut silage, maize, meal etc while their range of Paddle Mixer Feeders are recognised throughout Ireland, Britain and across Europe for their reliability of performance, build strength and quality of discharge. Technology in machinery maintains healthy digestion and farming efficiency and Frank and the team at Redrock take special pride in their TMR precision feed management system. All Redrock mixers-feeders are available with TMR tracker IRISH TRACTOR & AGRI

back up by nutritionists which is a feed management system that provides livestock farmers with a total solution to manage feed costs promote efficiency and improve production! TMR Tracker also offers professional livestock farmer’s valuable management functions including operator control, stock management, online data exchange with the feed advisor and various helpful management reports. With TMR Tracker Mobil, feeding and animal data can be managed anywhere on the farm. Feed ingredients, recipes, production groups and feed

mixer information are entered using the PC. DataLink (wireless) or DataKey (chip) is used to send information to the EZ3600 indicator on the feed mixer. This indicator displays the ingredient to be fed, its weight, as well as the corresponding group information. Weights loaded and fed are saved and returned using DataLink or DataKey and the software generates various detailed analysis reports, tables and graphs. “R&D is very important to us as company,” Frank outlined. “We continually need to bring new, cutting edge products to

our existing customer base and new customers to our existing product range. “The TMR Tracker provides farmers with a total solution in terms of managing feed costs and ensuring optimal performance from the various animals within specific groups. “The tracker system is fully compatible with all herd or farm record systems. At its most basic level it will serve to check the programmed ration against that which is actually fed out. The system will also calculate and register daily feed costs, dry matter intakes and daily refusals. “The new system also provides an integrated tracker function for online data exchange with nutritionists and advisors. In essence, the TMR Tracker is an integrated management system, allowing complete on-line data exchange between the farmer and his Redrock nutritionist. “It can also be used to monitor all aspects of the feeding operation.” Elsewhere, the Redrock

blockcutters are both powerful and durable and the broad range has been designed to suit all types of farms form the large-scale dairy to the more modest smallholdings while their slurry tanker range is built to the highest quality. Redrock trailers, meanwhile, are designed and built to operate in the most demanding of agricultural environments. With a dealer network spanning Ireland and the UK, France, Germany, Holland, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia and South Africa, the Redrock brand is very much in demand again and they are growing their market share. And not ones to rest on their laurels, they are current exploring a new market in Sudan. “Since 2010 we have experienced 10% growth each year,” Frank revealed, “Going forward, I believe growth will be generic. There is no silver bullet in this business, if we can continually grow 10-12% a year it will be manageable from a financial point of view and otherwise.” IRISH TRACTOR & AGRI

or the past 35 years, Meath Farm Machinery Ltd. has been supplying a top range service to a large customer base that covers a wide range of counties. Established by dealer principal Peter Timmons at Kilberry, Co Meath in 1979, the success of the business has seen two additional premises being opened during the intervening years at Bailieborough, Co Cavan and then Kilcock, Co Kildare. However, earlier this year in an agreement with John Deere for who Meath Farm Machinery Ltd. are dealers for, the Bailieborough outlet has been relocated to Poles, Dublin Road, Cavan which gives them a more central location that will allow them expand into new territory covering Leitrim and Longford. Meath Farm Machinery Ltd. offers a wide range of products from its outlets in John Deere agricultural and homeowner equipment as well as the dealer’s other franchises which include HiSpec, Tanco, Sulky, Schaffer and to name but a few. For this month’s edition of Irish Tractor & Agri, we profile the company and speak to Nicola Timmons about the restructuring phase they have just undergone. Managing Director Peter Timmons who is assisted by his son and general manager Ian Timmons and daughter marketing manager Nicola has seen the IRISH TRACTOR & AGRI

business grow over the past 35 years and now employs over 30 staff in the three outlets. The continuing growth of the business over the years in catering for the machinery needs of farmers saw them expand firstly in 2006, when the Cavan outlet was opened and then their third premise was opened in Kilcock in 2012. “The business was set up by my father Peter in 1979. Over the years, he expanded the business and we have the two branches in Cavan and Kildare now,” said Nicola. “In a restructuring of the John Deere

dealer network we agreed to move to Poles, outside Cavan where we can cater for customers not only in Cavan, but in Leitrim and Longford also. There has been significant investment placed in the move from Bailieborough and we wanted to make the transition as smooth as possible, which thankfully it worked out that way.” Nicola revealed that through their many years’ experience, the company reputation precedes them and this has helped the customer base grow. “This is a family run business and we pride ourselves on providing a good, reliable service and the customers know that they will get just that when they come to us. “The John Deere brand is the leading manufacturer in its field of expertise and customers know that when they buy from us, not only will they get a quality product, but they will also receive an excellent after sales service as well.” Meath Farm Machinery supply not only a wide range of brand new products, but second hand as well and Nicola admitted that this was an area that was doing particularly well, given current economic climate. “The second hand trade is very strong and has been since the end of the Celtic Tiger as not many were going out buying brand new during that time, but that has changed a bit now and there are attractive finance packages available now.”
