Eamonn Barrett International Transport was established in 1998

On the international trail Coming up on 15 years in business, Eamonn Barrett International Transport in Co Limerick are continuing to lead the way in international haulage. Irish Trucker spoke to the Managing Director himself to find out more.

T

here are fewer lines of business tougher to be in than the international haulage game, but for the past decade and a half Eamonn Barrett and co have continued to make it work.

Eamonn Barrett Transport has a list of customers all over Europe

Established by its current proprietor back in 1998, Eamonn Barrett International Transport has earned itself a strong reputation throughout Ireland, and indeed Europe, for providing a reliable service to its customers. “We’re based in Askeaton in County Limerick and we have 10 people working here full-time, including myself and my wife Helen,” explained Eamonn. “It’s a family run business and when we first started out it was with just one lorry IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

on the road. And lots of help from family and friends. It’s taken off from there really and we work all over the continent now.” While it sounds simple, Eamonn Barrett International Transport had it far from easy before establishing themselves as a steady business. Many long hauls and late hours earned Eamonn his customers early on and allowed him to eventually employ more drivers to get his business off the ground. Now the company boasts a strong fleet which journeys all across Europe to ensure that its customers are completely satisfied. “Basically what we do is international haulage to all European cities and beyond. Romania is the furthest we have gone to, And would be willing to even further,” stated Eamonn. “I am a mechanic by trade and I always had an interest in trucks from a very small age. I have a very good friend Edward O Callaghan and I bought my first truck from him which was an 1987 Scania 112 in 1998 and it all started up after that and the business just grew from strength to strength. We are sourcing work and making new contacts in many places.” Barrett International Transport now have a well-earned list of content customers from all over the continent. However, with the economy in the state it finds itself in, in this country at present, Eamonn’s company, like so many others in Ireland, have had to tighten its belt to try and ride out the recession which has effected so many in this country. “It’s tight at the moment. It’s really about survival now and to hope for a little profit to retain,” he admitted. “Profit margins are small and if you have a new truck, you need two old ones to help pay for it. We have up to date technology systems here and we’re looking to keep our fleet as modern as we can, but as I said things are tight.” The rising cost of fuel has been something which has hit companies like Eamonn’s quite hard over the past two years. He admits that it’s now tougher than ever for those in the haulage industry, but he is keen to explore whatever good options he can IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

to try and ride out the storm. “It’s a huge impact. I was only taking to our diesel supplier today and it’s going up again tonight,” As it does ever week; stated the MD. “With the work that we do, we buy most of our diesel abroad where it is cheaper and unless the heads of state do something here, there’s nothing we can do about that. Companies all over in Ireland that do work abroad are doing the same and it’s no surprise with the rate which diesel and petrol are at in this country at the moment.” The Eamonn Barrett International Transport fleet ensures that the company’s customers are satisfied by getting from ‘A to B’ safely and on time, and Eamonn has done a terrific job down through the years to make sure that his trucks are maintained to a very high standard. “We have 10 lorries, five of them are Scanias, three are DAFs and two Renaults,” Eamonn stated. “They would all be between 2000 and 2009 and I think I’m going to work with what I have at the minute. If things continue to go the way they are going, we’ll be downsizing rather than buying new I’m afraid.” Those are the tough choices that face any business man, but Eamonn is grateful to still have the loyal support of customers which have been with him from the very beginning, as well as the ones he acquired soon after setting up and down through the years. He acknowledged that there have been businesses in his local area that have felt the heat more so than him in the last few years, and has been thankful for their support and the support of others over the last 15 odd years.

“Our main customers would be DSV Dublin, DFDS, and we also do a good bit of work for other companies both National and International ,” he stated “There have been big losses in the area, one of which was Dell Computers who we had been doing work with since 2002. We started going out on the continent in 2001 and thankfully we still continue to do that on a weekly basis.” The plan now for Eamonn and co is to try and weather the storm, hope that businesses all across Ireland can enjoy better times and fuel costs will go down. While things look set to get worse before they get better, the MD of Eamonn Barrett International Transport is as optimistic as ever and hopeful for the future. “We hope to be able to sustain the hardship now and continue to be an employer in the area. Hopefully there will be something there for our kids in a few years if they want it,” he said. Eamonn Barrett International Transport is a member of the Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA) and is also part of the Small to Medium Enterprise (SME). In recent years, Eamonn and co have also worked closely with the Road Safety Authority (RSA) in developing the maintenance program for their truck and trailer fleet.

Delivering the goods for 75 years

Celebrating 75 years in existence, Vanfleet Transport Ltd. is one of Ireland’s premier distribution companies. Having expanded its fleet substantially over the past three years in line with favourable customer projections, this stellar family business is in a stronger position now than it’s ever been. Irish Trucker popped into the company’s base on the Ballycoolin Road, Dublin 11 for a chat with transport manager Paul Fitzsimons.

anfleet Transport Ltd. is a familyowned and operated business offering a regular delivery schedule specifically to Dunnes Stores outlets throughout Ireland. The Fitzsimons family has provided a quality service to its varied clients since 1936 and they are still at the forefront of the transport industry in Ireland 75 years after the company’s genesis. Paul Fitzsimons is particularly proud of his family’s history of providing distribution solutions, going back to 1936 when his grandfather John Fitzsimons started out as J Fitzsimons (and even earlier!). customers included the likes of Cantrell & Cochrane, Jameson, Guinness, Smithwicks, Irish Meat Packers, Saxa Salt and British Rail with a range of products carried including cement, turf, oil and lubricants, beverages, flooring, corn, meat and steel. A number of different incarnations of the family business followed before Shay Fitzsimons established Vanfleet Transport Ltd. and Fleetway Transport Ltd. (as a service provider to Vanfleet) in 1983. Shea’s son Thomas succeeded him as MD in 1997 and his other son, Paul, is transport manager, having been involved in the family business for 25 years. IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

The entire fleet is maintained in excellent condition, with automatic warnings a month ahead of DOEs and everything is managed to the very highest standards. “We also have our own wash team who wash the vehicles twice a week and we insist on a twice weekly check on tyre pressure etc.,” Paul adds. “We bought six new Cartwright trailers in 2010 and in 2011 we got another new Cartwright trailer with an aero kit. Customers always want to know what savings can be made and we always strive to give them the best value for money possible, so we’re constantly investing in new equipment and new technology. “Since we decided to expand the fleet and provide the full distribution service ourselves, there has obviously been a severe downturn in the Irish economy but we review things month on month to see where we can save our

customer money and we will make suggestions, such as maybe reducing deliveries to one hub from five times a week to three times. Most of this is taken on board.” In terms of staff numbers, Vanfleet Transport Ld. employs 37 full-time drivers as well as six administration staff and would also use between ten and 15 agency drivers in any given week. The company boasts its own workshop facility with a part-time mechanic who can handle smaller jobs but most of the work goes to the main suppliers. In 2008, a decision was made to use Hino trucks as Harris Hino is located

nearby and Paul is delighted with the brand new vehicles purchased both in ’08 and ’09. “It represented a significant investment but the Hino offers exceptional value for money,” he contests. As for the future challenges facing this long-running and extremely successful family business, Paul Fitzsimons is confident they will continue to maintain their exceptional tradition in the Irish haulage sector: “Our goal is to remain competitive in the market and to keep our customer as happy as possible, especially by coming up with new ways to save them money. We source the cheapest fuel and maintenance possible but you have to keep safety in mind at all times, so you can’t afford to be cutting corners. If you’re going to provide a quality service, you can’t scrimp on anything – and Vanfleet has always provided a quality service.”

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Headquartered in Castlebar, McGrath Industrial Waste is one of the premier waste management operators in Connacht. This brilliantly-managed family concern has forged a stellar reputation for itself since it was established by founder Paddy McGrath in the mid-1970s. Irish Trucker popped into the Turlough base to get an insight into the day-to-day running of the business and its substantial fleet from current managing director Declan McGrath.

D

eclan McGrath, the personable MD of McGrath Industrial Waste – which provides a top-class industrial, commercial and domestic waste management service throughout Mayo and Sligo – reflects on the genesis of a successful family business set up by his father Paddy: “My father set the company up 35 years ago. It was very hard work at the time; everything would have been done by hand back then. “During the ‘80s, a lot of lads with tractors and trailers decided to get out of the industry and he would have acquired those businesses. I’d say

Skip Hire is another speciality of McGrath Waste

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

McGrath Waste bought out about nine companies over the years, from small enough lads to large waste companies. Each time he bought a company, the goodwill stayed…” With two facilities, McGrath Industrial Waste is one of the largest employers in the waste industry in Mayo. The main office and garage are in Turlough, Castlebar, with recycling depots in both Castlebar and Ballina. A full waste management / recycling service is provided from collection and segregation through to transportation and recycling, with cardboards, plastics, metals, timbers etc. provided for as well as a full shredding service. Due to strict legislation, this is now a very modern industry and McGrath Waste is fully compliant with all national and EU legislation. As a professional and environmentally-conscious o r g a n i s a t i o n , acknowledging the impact its operations could potentially have on the environment, McGrath Industrial Waste Ltd. strives at all times to minimise the impact on the environment through its proven environmental policy. The 55

company is fully-permitted with all requisite licences and permits including waste collection permits from Mayo and Sligo County Councils, certification to collect, recycle and recover packaging waste from Repak and full Re-Gen 10 approval. McGrath Industrial Waste employs 35 people and operates a fleet of 20 waste collection vehicles, which are a healthy mixture of Volvo, Scania and Mercedes. With their own garage and workshop, they carry out all their own fleet maintenance and servicing. “We would move 25,000 tonnes of waste and recycled waste per year,” Declan notes. “We’ve introduced our wheelie bin service to 8,000 homes in Mayo and 2,000 homes in Sligo. The majority of that would be rural collection, down the backroads, which is where we started.” McGrath Industrial Waste Ltd is a local family-run business which has been expanding successfully over the past four decades. It is extremely well-established in the waste industry, being involved the collection, transportation, recovery and disposal of residential and commercial waste and recycling wheelie bins, food waste and construction and demolition. 56

McGrath Industrial Waste also offers a number of other services, some of which include: loose and bailed cardboard collections, office recycling boxes, a confidential shredding service, skip hire, roll on roll off hire and compactors. As a family-run business, it is large enough to cope and small enough to care, having evolved into one of the leading providers of waste management services in the Connacht region. When asked to outline the secrets of the company’s success, the managing director simply says: “If you provide a good service at a good price – which we have always done – then the customers will stay with you. We run like clockwork and we are outside houses to the minute, from Kiltimagh to Crossmolina to Tourlestrane. We provide commercial waste management services to some of the largest factories in Mayo, so we must be doing something right.” Whether your requirements are industrial or domestic, large or small scale, a one-off or an ongoing contract, McGrath Waste will use its experience and expertise to meet your specific needs providing a fast, reliable and professional service. Domestic customers are provided with a comprehensive wheelie bin

and bag service, encompassing green bins (from 140L to 360L), blue bins for recycling and brown bins (for organic waste, which are currently being phased in), with bin collections taking place on alternate weeks. Pre-paid yellow waste bags are also available from shops throughout Castlebar and surrounding areas (Knockmore, Crossmolina, Bofeenaun, Swinford, Foxford, Kiltimagh, Charlestown Turlough etc. A waste collection service is also IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

can be very hard on people, but when you have a professional, reliable service like Alcorn Recovery looking after your vehicle, then they can make the burden that much

easier to deal with. Why did Roy decide to form the recovery company? “I just felt that the opening was there. Our family has been involved in the repair side of things for many decades and this seemed like the logical next step.” Specialising in the recovery of cars and light commercials, this Tyrone based firm relies very much on the family ethic. Roy's wife Mavis looks after the administration side of the business and he admits that the business would be nowhere without her assistance. “Mavis basically looks after everything on the administration side of the business and she just couldn't be done without. “My daughter Lesley would also help out with the administration side of things, while my son Peter, who is 59

a civil engineering in Belfast helps out on his weekend's off. My brother in law Martin does some of the recovery work as well, so family is everything to us as we are only a small operation.” Another man that plays a huge part in the business is Richard Shortt, who use to work full time here, but now he keeps one of our trucks full time on the A5. Roy may think that it is a 'small operation' but his large customer base suggests otherwise, the majority of which come from the public sector and the MD admits that there location is key to the success they have sustained over the years. “We are only eight miles from Omagh which means we are ideally placed to cope with breakdowns on the motorways around us. The majority of our work would be done for the public sector with only about 5% coming from the private sector. “We are fortunate to have a very loyal customer base, many of who have been with us from the start. We have worked hard to build the business up over the years and my only regret is that I didn't start years earlier.” A full 24-hour service is provided, seven days of the week, 365 days per year. A professional, prompt and affordable service is provided at all times and Alcorn Recovery is renowned for getting the job done on time every time. As the company's stellar reputation spreads, they are benefiting from more and more business through word of mouth. Simply put, this business is now established as one of the premier recovery / breakdown operators in Ulster. A comprehensive service is provided under one roof and the availability of a fully-qualified crew of mechanical repair technicians using the latest state-of-the-art equipment means customers can be back on the road in double-quick time. “We're available 24 hours a day to recover anything from a moped to a light commercial. We are contracted to carry anything up to 3 and a half tonnes. We can recover a vehicle from literally anywhere - the roadside, out of a bog or wherever it might be stranded. Our equipment is very versatile and for that reason the work can be quite varied. Roy is pleased to report that he is reasonably busy at the moment. “We're tipping away. Things have picked up in the last six months or so, which is encouraging. From '06 up to '09, it was booming. Things have been a lot quieter since, but we're still kept ticking over. We have no major plans to expand for the time being, but we are pleased with the direction that the business is heading.” Roy is well known to many involved in the rallying circuit as he was an excellent rally driver in years gone by, especially in the Ulster area, where he regularly picked up honours on the various circuits. Alcorn Recovery can relieve some of the stress that accidents cause

that the winter is busier, I think the summer can be busier at times as people are driving a lot faster. With a fleet of four trucks at their disposal, Roy reveals that they build their own in order to ensure that they are getting the recovery vehicle that they want. “Yes we would buy in the cab and chassis and build our own recovery vehicles. That way we know what we are getting and it is to our specifications. It takes us about three months to build it as finding the time to work on it is the

The special Motorcycle Recovery Unit

T

he company was established in 1998 by Sean Mulholland and his wife Caroline and from humble beginnings, this recovery firm has established itself as one of the leading recovery specialists in the west of Ireland. From its main office in Ardrahan, Co Galway, Autocraft operates ten recovery vehicles and Caroline admits that they have made it one of their priorities to move with the times with regards technology. “In latter years we have come to the forefront within the recovery industry by its commitment to understanding its customer's needs, and by the use of the latest technology and procedures,” said Caroline. “With such accreditations as PAS43 and the 2007 Hibernian Best Regional and National Contractor Award, Autocraft continues to progress and grow within a very specialised and integral part of the Irish Motoring Industry.” Legislation is a massive part of this industry and Caroline admits that it is essential to keep up to date with the latest changes in the industry, while all drivers must regularly undergo refresher courses. “We would deal with a number of insurance companies and the IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

regulations within the industry are very stringent. The drivers are highly trained and go on courses every year to ensure they are up to speed with the latest changes in the industry. “Autocraft's mission statement is to cater for the unexpected and surpass customer expectations on all occasions. On request we can and do provide our clients with effective reporting and statistical support, telephone customer surveys and GPS tracking of all assistances.” Autocraft Recovery are certified by AVRO who are The Association of Vehicle Recovery Operators Limited, established in 1977, as a representative on all matters relating to the vehicle recovery industry with a view to raise standards in the recovery industry. AVRO operates throughout Southern Ireland and is the only

representative body with a recognised set of standards. “We appreciate and take pride in the appearance portrayed by our staff members in the eye of the public, we have introduced a standard uniform which includes shirt and tie and all our vehicles have regular safety checks and continuous cleanliness standards. “Through the use of our new control room we can manage large volumes of assistances very

effectively. The control room boasts a computerised phone management system with 4 incoming lines. Turbo Dispatch and full GPS mapped tracking.” Caroline points the c o m b i n e d experience of the employees at the company as one of the main reasons for their success. “With a combined On the road to 33 years of recovery experience you can be guaranteed the best available service and professionalism. We provide a wide range of services and these include secure 24 hour indoor and outdoor storage of vehicles. We can recover to and from anywhere in Europe; we are a subcontracted Corporate Taxi Service; we can recover all types of trucks, cars, motorcycles, coaches, while we also provide a fuel drain service where we have a specialised van that caters for draining fuel from vehicles, which is a common enough occurrence.” Autocraft's fleet is impressive to say the least and it comprises of three 7.5 tonne Tilt and Slide Trucks, three 10 tonne Tilt and Slide Trucks (two with crew cab), one 12 tonne Tilt and Slide Truck, an 18 tonne Tilt and Slide Truck, a Service Mobile equipped for specialist motor cycle recovery and a Scania Heavy under lift with top boom plus twin 30,000lb wenches. “All relevant vehicles have been LOLER tested and all vehicles are fully legally

compliant and are comprehensively insured. We are also certified by (RIES) who are the Recovery Industry Engineering Standards who inspect vehicles, equipment, premises and they also provide staff training to prove satisfactory entry for membership into AVRO.” In 2007, Autocraft Recovery's status in the industry was recognised when they were the Hibernian Best Regional and National Contractor award and this was just nine short years after the business was initially established.

“We have come a long way since we started this. In truth, it was just by pure accident that we got involved in recovery work as Sean started out doing repair work and he started doing a small bit of recovery work before we diversified into that completely. “We are more than just a recovery service as we give the customers the peace of mind that their vehicle will be looked after by a professional team and that it will be safely secured at our compound if needed.”

Lowes of Larne is one of Northern Ireland’s best known car sales companies

Lowe’s of Larne has the car for you From humble beginnings, Lowe’s of Larne has grown into one of Northern Ireland’s leading car sales businesses. Founder and managing director Kenny Lowe explains more.

L

ooking for a new or used car or light commercial? If so, Lowe’s of Larne is certainly worth a visit. Founded in 1989 by local man Kenny Lowe, this family-run business is now recognised as one of the most successful car sales companies in the North. Indeed, such has been its growth that several moves were required before Kenny purchased a two-acre site on the outskirts of Larne which is now home to a state-of-the-art auto complex. While Kenny remains very much involved in the day-to-day running of his

74

car sales business, which employs 15 staff, he also runs the following companies: Lowe’s of Larne Financial Services (which provides financial packages for cars and vans); Lowe’s of Larne Car Repairs; Lowe’s of Larne Bodyshop; Lowe’s of Larne Capri Specialists; Lowe’s of Larne Recovery Service; Lowe’s of Larne Second Hand Spares; Lowe’s of Larne Executive Villas (Orlando, Florida) and Lowe’s of Larne Tyre and Auto Complex. It’s all a far cry from when he started out with just £50 in his pocket 22 years

ago. “I still have that £50 note!” jokes Kenny, whose wife Senga is also a director in the car sales business. “I saw an opening in the market for new and second hand car sales and I decided to go for it. We’ve come a long way in the last 22 years and attract customers from all over Ireland and the UK. We get a lot of business from the Republic which is hardly surprising considering there are some very good deals to be had by customers in the south, particularly when the euro is IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

strong against the pound. It’s not unusual for someone from Cork to take a flight up to Belfast and drive home in their new car. “We pride ourselves on supplying high quality new and used vehicles, and the fact that we get a lot of repeat business is testament to this.” Over the past two decades, Lowe’s of Larne has established a tradition of value-formoney, reliability and total dedication to customer service. Specialising in the sale of the leading German makes, including Mercedes, BMW, Audi and Volkswagen, the company stocks up to 100 vehicles at any one time and is currently selling between 20 and 30 cars a week. “The cars we sell vary in age. We have noticed a growing demand for older models because many people aren’t able to afford newer models in the current climate,” Kenny explains. If you are looking for a particular model that isn’t in stock, Kenny will gladly source it for you. If you are not sure what you are looking for, there is an extensive range of models in stock to help you choose the right vehicle for your needs. Customers can also use the company’s website, www.lowesoflarne.co.uk, to search for makes, models, prices as well as the availability of vehicles.

Every car sold by Lowe’s of Larne comes with a full 60-point quality inspection as well as a 50-point service report. Lowe’s are an AA warranty-approved garage and are also part of The Good Garage Scheme. They are only sourced from the most reputable suppliers in the UK and Ireland. Lowe’s of Larne can provide you with a complete repair package from recovering your car and repairing it to repairing the smallest of scratches to your paintwork. Their bodyshop can repair and fit new parts and panels as required. A free courtesy car will be provided while your car is being repaired by arrangement. Lowe’s also carry out a full range of customised work such as body kits, spoilers and modified and custom-built bonnet vents. Alloy wheels, motorbikes, Capri retro, audio systems, iPod, satellite navigations and window tinting are also a speciality. In recent times the Co. Antrimbased company has started supplying and fitting new tyres and exhausts to all makes of cars. They can provide a complete service from checking your car over to booking it in for MOT and taking it to MOT for you. A free MOT check over service is provided by the garage.
