BAM sweeps the board at the International PPP Awards
BAM was the big winner at the recent International Partnership Awards—the most prestigious event in the global Public Private Partnership (PPP) industry’s calendar—with the excellence of a number of its Irish projects being specifically recognised at the ceremony. BAM won four awards on the night, including one for the Schools Bundle 3 project, which saw the construction of eight schools on behalf of the Department of Education and Skills. BAM also won awards for Best Developer and Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) Management Company of the Year. PPP has played a key role in the delivery of Ireland’s health, education, and transport infrastructure in recent years. BAM has provided the necessary equity for important infrastructure and then take full responsibility for the project’s design, construction, operation, and maintenance for a 25 year period. The state retains ownership of the asset under the agreement and when the concession period expires, usually after 25 years, the asset reverts to full state ownership. Discussing its selection of BAM for the overall Best Developer award, the Partnership Awards judging panel highlighted the company’s record of developing new technical and financial solutions for its diverse projects, delivering projects on or ahead of time and within budget, and its excellent relationship with its public sector counterparts. BAM was also selected as SPV Management Company of the Year. SPVs are integral to the PPP model, because they bring together the construction firms, lenders, and public bodies in a separate commercial venture to oversee and manage the development of individual projects. The judging panel commended BAM’s dedication to building strong and lasting relationships with clients and stakeholders; in particular, they noted BAM’s development of new approaches to increase the flexibility in contracts while at the same time offering security to sponsors and lenders. Schools Bundle 3, which was awarded silver in the Best Completed Project category, saw the delivery of eight brand new Irish schools on time and ahead of schedule in Wexford (Gorey), Waterford (Tramore), Galway (Doughiska), Westmeath (Athlone), Donegal (Letterkenny), Leitrim (Ballinamore), and Limerick (Doon). The judges praised BAM’s proactive approach in engaging with its client to develop an ongoing process of quality review and improvement at the schools and its incorporation of industry best practice. Following the completion of Schools Bundle 3, the National Development Finance Agency selected BAM to undertake Schools Bundle 4, which will see the delivery of four post primary schools on time and within budget this year. BAM also received recognition for its work on the M11 Gorey to Enniscorthy PPP and the Courts Bundle PPP. BAM reached financial close with the Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) for the €350 million M11 Gorey to Enniscorthy motorway project, which was shortlisted for the Best Road Project, at the end of 2015. The Courts Bundle, shortlisted for Best Social Infrastructure Project, is valued at €135 million and will see BAM undertake the construction and refurbishment of seven landmark courthouses across Ireland. Commenting on the awards, BAM Ireland Chief Executive Theo Cullinane observed: “These awards demonstrate BAM’s position as a market leader in the PPP sector not just in Ireland but internationally. The PPP model has a key role to play in the delivery of Ireland’s civic, education, and transport infrastructure. During the downturn, when financial constraints posed countless problems for the development of the country, PPP offered a solution that ensured roads were constructed, courts were built, and children across Ireland were provided with the best possible school facilities. BAM is incredibly proud of its contribution to this development and it is incredibly satisfying to have our efforts recognised by our peers in the international PPP industry.” BAM’s success at the international Partnership Awards continues a string of strong performances for the company in 2016. At the 2016 Green Awards, BAM won in the Green Construction category for the Corrib Tunnel Project. The completion of the longest service tunnel in Europe was seen as a significant step towards “First Gas” from the Corrib Gas field, which is expected to provide up to 60% of Ireland’s energy needs at peak production. BAM was commended for the innovative and creative approaches which were used at every stage of the design and construction phase of the tunnel to minimise environmental impacts. The tunnel was also recognised on the international stage last year with the International Tunnelling Association naming it Environmental Initiative of the year. BAM also recently won Engineering Project of the Year for its work on N11 Arklow Rathnew PPP / N7 Newlands Cross Flyover at the CMG Irish Building and Design Awards 2016. BUILDING IRELAND

No plans to forcibly take vacant homes, says Coveney
Minister for Housing Simon Coveney says the Government has no plans to forcibly take possession of vacant properties. Speaking at a conference organised by the Housing Agency focussing on the issue of affordability, Mr Coveney said he had no “absolute” statements to make on plans to address the housing crisis, but they would include accessing the some 250,000 empty properties around the country while respecting property rights. He said that there will be six-month emergency plans implemented in urban areas to “inject some adrenalin into the system” and also added that student accommodation is easier to provide through and would possibly free up affordable rental properties. Housing Agency Chairperson Conor Skehan stated that a third of the population will need state support to buy or rent their home. The conference also heard that 100,000 homes will be needed by 2020 and there are plans to build 35,000 social units.

CHANGING THE LANDSCAPE
For more than half a decade, Peter O’Brien & Sons (Landscaping) Ltd. have been embellishing the landscape in the greater Dublin area and beyond. We visited their Malahide base and met up with managing director Ciaran O’Brien to get an insight into this exceptional, awardwinning, market-leading family operation.
Since its inception from humble origins more than half a century ago, Peter O’Brien & Sons (Landscaping) Ltd. has developed into Ireland’s premier landscape and sportsground BUILDING IRELAND
contractor. Founded in 1963 as a small family-run gardening enterprise, the business has evolved organically to become the partner of choice of local authorities and main contractors – as well as individual clients – throughout the capital and oftentimes further afield. No job is ever considered too large or too small, with an absolute adherence to excellence guaranteed from start to finish – and even afterwards in the shape of an outstanding maintenance service. Peter O’Brien & Sons (Landscaping) Ltd. is a progressive, pioneering, innovative company that moves with the times and continuously embraces new ideas, procedures, technology and equipment to ensure customers of optimal solutions. As a member of the ALCI (Association of Landscape Contractors
16
An internal courtyard on the 5th floor of the Mater Hospital
of Ireland), Peter O’Brien & Sons (Landscaping) Ltd. promote high standards in the landscaping industry. Over the years, they have received numerous awards in the demanding, specialist areas of landscaping and sportsground development, collecting the prestigious “Bog Oak Trophy” (AllIreland Landscape Award) on more than one occasion as well as top prizes at the An Bord Bia Quality Awards and for Public Authority works. World-class solutions are provided across the board and recognised accordingly. Reflecting on the genesis of one of Ireland’s largest landscaping and sportsground contractors, MD Ciaran O’Brien notes: “My father, Peter, started it off in 1963 and the business grew with the general economy of the time. There was a housing boom in the ‘sixties and he started doing private gardens and working with local builders around the Artane / Coolock area and in the suburbs of the city. “He then worked with Dublin County Council and Dublin City Council and was involved in Ballymun flats in the

‘70s and Darndale after that. He did landscaping on schools and convents and just kept getting more and more work.” Such was Peter’s dedication to quality work that the business took on a life of its own, to such an extent that full-time employment is currently generated for a team of 50! “He started in 1962 with a rotavator doing back gardens in the evenings after working all day. He went into it full-time the following year.” It was back-breaking work and there was plenty of it. “It really was tough going in the early days,” Ciaran relates. “It was a six-days-a week job and he was putting in 60-80 hours every week just to keep things moving. He never said no to anybody and took on whatever work came his way. That’s a philosophy that we have tried to maintain as the business has grown. We’ve made ourselves available to everyone and that’s’ why we’ve held onto so many
customers over the decades, including regular work with main contractors. It’s very much a family affair (thereby guaranteeing a personal touch), with founder Peter – Ireland’s most experienced landscaping professional! - still keeping an eye on proceedings while his son Ciaran oversees the dayto-day running of the business. Ciaran’s brother Dermot looks after drainage, while Peter O’Toole is on hand as a long-serving company director. “Peter is a huge part of the business,” Ciaran points out. “I went to college with him and he spent some time in England before joining us 25 years ago. Regarding the catchment area covered and the general nature of the work undertaken, Ciaran reveals: “We’re predominantly active in Dublin but we have worked all over Ireland, including Cork, Kilkenny, Carlow, Meath and

We mostly carry out commercial projects but we do some residential stuff – show houses etc. – as well as a lot of maintenance work.” One of the projects being undertaken at the time of writing was the provision of new football pitches at St Michael’s College in Dublin 4. “In the 1970s, when all the new schools were being built to facilitate the new housing developments that were going up, we would have started putting in pitches in the schools and we have built on that tradition since,” comments Ciaran. “We’ve become specialists in that area and have worked on Lansdowne Road, where we did an upgrade, and Thomond Park, where we installed the current front and back pitches. We also did a lot of the initial pitch work in UCD and put in two new pitches in Grangegorman last year as well as a variety of pitches for Dublin County Council and Kildare County Council etc.” Although the work is still predominantly labour-intensive, Ciaran concedes that the days when a man could turn up with a shovel over his shoulder to work on a garden or pitch are long gone (Peter O’Brien & Sons (Landscaping) Ltd. carries approximately €1.5m worth of plant)… “It’s getting close to being a science,” he concurs. “It’s more engineering now than simple landscaping. We use a lot of laserguided machinery now to make sure that everything is as precise as it can possibly be. “Maintenance contracts would account for a large percentage of our work and up to half our

defences and have also completed a lot of projects around tidal areas.” Regarding work ongoing at the time of writing, the project manager continues: “We are doing groundworks on schools in both Tallaght and Ashbourne at the minute. Both of those are labour and plant hire agreements.
Generally speaking, we tend to have five or six smaller projects, which are usually up to five days long, running at any given time. Alongside that, we then tender for bigger projects in housing developments, schools and other construction sites.” The stunning fleet of company-

owned machinery at BH Groundworks’ disposal comprises the aforementioned eight track machines, a 20-tonne rubber duck, dumpers, nine beaver-tail trucks ranging from 7.5 to 20 tonnes, eight vans, a grab truck and a number of tipper trucks. Regarding the organic growth of the fleet, Stuart reflects: “We started off small and added more and more second-hand machines as we got busier. We have a nice fleet at the moment but investment is ongoing and we tend to pick up a new piece of plant every month or so.” Needless to say, the fleet – which represents the very lifeblood of the operation – is preserved in immaculate condition at all times. “Connolly Commercials in Roundwood looks after all our maintenance and they turn it around very quickly for us, which is much appreciated.” To ensure a steady flow of
business, a flexible and diverse range of services is provided. For example, BH Groundworks employs two tar and concrete crews offering tarmacadam, road, footpath and paving services both to local authorities and private customers. They also count a couple of stone masons among their ranks and provide a highquality wall-building service. With so much to offer, the future prognosis for this dynamic young company is extremely encouraging. Looking to that future, Stuart says the aim is to keep growing by providing exceptional services: “We’ll try to keep growing and to keep winning more contracts,” he concludes. “We’ll stick to the Wicklow / South Dublin area and perhaps look at taking on a bit of work in Wexford as well, if the demand is there. “Our turnover is up compared to this time last year and we’re
heading into the busy season now,

I don’t think it will be every as good as it was before and maybe that’s a good thing. Like everyone else, we had a couple of lean years, but fortunately we came through it and we’re looking forward to the future.” Brooks are main dealers for many of the leading brands and they pride themselves on supplying quality products to their customers. Four years ago, the company
underwent a major change when Welsh owned company Premier Forest Products bought Brooks Timber & Building Supplies, although Karl revealed that they have stuck to the Brooks way. “There hasn’t been much change, if anything we would have a better supply of products and in particular our timber range. “We have constructional timber, machined timber, redwood, sheet
material, hardwoods and a FSC approved chain of custody certifications. Where applicable all timber products are produced to current EU construction directives.” Brooks also supply a full range of Irish products especially in the heavy building materials section as manufacturers include Gypsum, Moy Isover, Wavin and Irish Cement Tegral. FROM GALWAY TO GHANA ...
A subsidiary of Statcroft Transport & Civil Engineering Ltd, Morris Plant Hire Ghana Ltd commenced operations in Ghana in January 2012 supplying a well maintained hire fleet and carrying out activities such as bush clearance, road maintenance, drainage, earthworks and civil works. Project manager Declan Sylver explains more.
Since arriving in Ghana, the company has built a strong reputation and plans to extend its operations in West Africa to Togo BUILDING IRELAND

THE WINDOW AND DOOR SPECIALISTS
There are many different aspects to choosing the right windows and doors for your home as quality, price, durability and look are high on home owners list of priorities.
Choosing the right windows and doors can be an arduous task as there is so much to choose from, but the expertise given by some firms in this industry is second to none and for this month’s edition of Building Ireland we profile one of Ireland’s leading window and door manufacturers. Headquartered in Benburb, Co Tyrone and with a showroom in Collooney, Co Sligo and an office in Dublin city centre, the McMullan O’Donnell name has become synonymous with producing high quality products in the window and door manufacturing industry. Established by Francis O’Donnell and Peter McMullan in 1981, the
company has evolved over the years and are now regarded as one of the leading window and door specialists in Ireland. Sales manager Paul McKillen told us that the company has always placed a great emphasis on manufacturing high quality products that meet stringent specifications. “We are aware of the different requirements of our customers and our windows, doors and sun lounges are designed and manufactured to the highest standards to suit all demands,” said Paul. More and more products are being developed in both doors and windows as the company strives to stay at the forefront in its field of expertise. “We are constantly developing and even during the recession we never slacked off and were kept busy. The main reason for this is that we would work more in the commercial and industrial sectors more so than private housing developments.” Customer service and competitive 53
prices are something that McMullan O’Donnell continuously strive to meet in order to ensure that they continue to develop the business. Of course, none of this would be possible without a reliable and efficient workforce that ensure customer satisfaction at all costs. “There is between 100 and 150 employed in the company and all are highly motivated to ensure that customer service requirements and the company’s standards are met at all times.” Modern technology has played a massive part in the evolvement of the business as computer-aided machining has helped enhance production. “We realise that good results are not alone dependent on top of the range machinery. Our aim is to lead the market in all sectors. We focus on excellent craftsmanship, highly trained, customer orientated staff and continuous new product development.” BUILDING IRELAND

Boasting the experience and resources required to undertake formwork projects of any size or nature, Murform has delivered outstanding results for a select group of main contractors including Lagan Construction, Graham Construction, WN Developments, Roadbridge Ltd., Allen & Smyth Construction, Cleary & Doyle, SIAC Construction, John Fleming Group, Mythen Bros, Luddon Construction, Morrison Construction, PJ Careys etc. The scope of work includes bridge structures, water treatment plants, water towers and reservoirs, biowaste processing plants and waste transfer stations, concrete frame buildings, wind farm FRC works, pharmaceutical plants, coastal protection and marine works, schools and shopping units and hybrid frame buildings, with Health & Safety a primary consideration throughout the course of all projects. Recently launched, G-Frame Structures Ltd. specialises in the design, supply and installation of engineered timber and hybrid structures, offering a direct route to a complete hybrid package working with a palette that includes Cross Laminated Timber, Glulam and Laminated Veneered Lumber.
They provide sustainable solutions across the full range of building types including social and private residential, education, public access and workspace. From its offices in Bedfordshire, England and West Lothian, Scotland, Murform Ltd. has been serving the UK market since 2007, at which point a fourth brother, Lee Murphy, came on board. Director, Larry, who has over three decades’ experience of formwork, shuttering, steel frames and concrete, recalls: “We started off quite small and built it up gradually. As our clients grew, we grew alongside them. We’d had an inkling in ’07 that things weren’t great on the home economy and that was when we set up operations in the UK. The residential work had dried up at home and we didn’t want to get caught with all our eggs in one basket.” Indeed, it was only last year that Murform recommenced working in Ireland, contracted by Roadbridge to work on the N17 / N18 Gort to Tuam PPP Project, which involves the construction of 57kms of new motorway and 4kms of dual carriageway between Tuam and Gort in County Galway. This project is being completed by the Direct Route Consortium, which is made up of Roadbridge, Sisk,

This comprises seven overbridges, two underbridges, two riverbridges, one railwaybridge and one pedestrian footbridge. Works commenced on June 22nd, 2015 and are currently ongoing. “We had previously completed eight bridges for Roadbridge on the Fermoy - Mitchelstown Bypass in County Cork and 28 between Kilcullen and Carlow and found that they were an excellent company to work for, so that helped us make our decision to come back and work at home again,” says Larry. Murform are also doing the foundations for Facebook’s spectacular new data centre in Clonee, County Meath. The Clonee Data Centre, which is being built on a 220-acre site, will be run on 100% renewable energy and will be naturally cooled by air from outside - with a special filtration system used to remove salt from the air due to its proximity to the Irish Sea. reflecting on the genesis of the business. “We were very busy within a year, working on pharmaceutical plants and the Lidl distribution centre in Newbridge… ” Today, Peter has a crew of approximately 40 men, working mostly in the south east (Waterford, Wexford, Carlow, Kilkenny), mainly for Sisk and BAM Ireland. He is particularly proud to have worked on the Great Island Power Station in Wexford – a twoand-a-half-year project for Sisk – and has also secured subcontract work for new and refurbished courthouses in Wexford and Waterford respectively for BAM. “These are two of the seven new courthouses that BAM are doing around the country and they are sizeable projects,” he states. The Wexford man attributes the success, longevity and popularity of his company to knowledge and site safety. “We have an excellent track record and all of our personnel are fully trained and certified,” he stresses. “They all know what they are doing and they are highly professional men. The importance of that could not be overstated. A lot of them have been working with us for more than ten years and, by keeping them

Managing director Peter O’Connor has 30 years’ experience of formwork, having accumulated a wealth of expertise working in Australia, London and Germany, where he picked up a lot of innovative ideas. “I started off with a small crew of six men, providing a formwork service to Sisk around Dublin,” he notes, 64

together, we can offer strong teamwork as well as consistency in everything we do.” Of course, it hasn’t all been plain sailing. The economic crash and the subsequent near-demise of the construction sector presented many sleepless nights: “There have been huge challenges and at times it seemed like an insurmountable struggle,” Peter admits. “It’s still tough and the industry is still in recession. But the quality of our work and the competency of the men onboard the O’Connor Formwork team got us through. Also, the fact that we don’t have any huge overheads or borrowings and weren’t exposed in that way. Our creditors were good to us, as well. We have a good credit rating and our creditors always stand by us. To sustain the high quality of workmanship for which O’Connor Formwork is renowned, significant investment in plant and machinery is required every year. “Everything has to be kept right as well – you can’t take any chances. Everything has to be working 100% or you won’t be here. In this line of work, it’s all about perfection, so you have to keep spending money.” Peter is very much the archetypal hands-on owner, who is on site around the clock and takes a personal interest in every project. He admits to also deriving a great deal of personal pride from completing the various projects: “We’ve completed a lot of major projects and of course it is good to be able to stand back afterwards and say you did it. The CCGT Great Island Power Station was a big one for us – we poured 20,000 cubic metres of concrete into that.” Looking to the future, Peter is confident that many
more landmark projects will be signed off in the coming years and decades: “We’ll consolidate what we have. Getting bigger isn’t necessarily the same as getting better and I’m happy with the size of the business at the moment, so we won’t be chasing expansion. “We’ve taken on our first project direct for the client – a €15m expansion for Custom Compost / Walsh Mushrooms in Gorey, where we have been on-site for three years to date. Getting the quality right is paramount and we will continue to implement the highest levels of quality control and project management. We’ve managed to keep all of our men in work and that’s something I’d dearly love to be able to do going forward.” O Connor Formwork Ltd. Shielbaggan, Ramsgrange, New Ross, County Wexford.

Tullamore Central Library - a vibrant public buidling in the heart of Tullamore”
PROFESSIONAL TO THE CORE Kenny Lyons Associates Architects have earned themselves a reputation as one of the most highly regarded professional architectural firms in the midlands. As company director, Peter Lyons gave Building Ireland some insight into what they are all about.
I
n a little over 10 years, Kenny Lyons Associates Architects in Tullamore, Co Offaly have amassed a portfolio of projects that any rival firm in the country would be proud of. One of the most highly regarded professional architectural firms in the midlands, Kenny Lyons Associates Architects have experience in a variety of areas, not least on commercial, public, education and residential projects. They produce original, bespoke BUILDING IRELAND
designs that maximise the use of daylight, energy conservation and modern materials, while recognising the importance of tailoring a project to the client’s budget. The Practice employs four accredited Conservation Architects and have completed a number of projects in the heritage towns of Birr and Roscrea in addition to Tullamore, Kilbeggan and the surrounding midlands. Kenny Lyons Associates Architects have extensive experience in a broad range of construction areas and have been in practice in Tullamore since 2005. Previous to that the Practice traded under the name Kenny & Associates. They guarantee you a professional service and a direct one to one contact with the directors aided by the backup of an experienced and well trained technical team. The company is headed by Peter Lyons who was good enough to speak with us about some of the 66
company’s past and present projects, while also delving into some of the core values of the business. “We are based here in Central Business Park in Tullamore and we are in operation as ‘Kenny Lyons Associates Architects’ since 2005. There are 11 staff here at present,” explained Peter. “Basically, we are a registered architectural practice in Tullamore which specialises largely in educational projects. We are currently working on a number of big educational projects at various stages, along with some smaller school projects. We are also involved in many local sports and community projects.” One of the most high profile projects to date for Kenny Lyons Associates Architects was the redevelopment of Offaly GAA’s O’Connor Park stadium in Tullamore, which was completed six

years ago. The project involved work on the new 7,000 seat stand, including comfortable accommodation for press staff and radio commentators as well as a wheelchair viewing platform at the upper level. The home of Offaly GAA, the project was a popular one and as a proud Offaly GAA supporter, Peter and his Practice were delighted to be involved. “The first phase of the O’Connor Park project was completed in 2006 and the last phase was completed by 2010, so it was a big project for us and we were delighted to be a part of it.”
Ballinamere Community Centre
Phase two, the north terrace, was completed in 2007 for €1,600,000 and the final phase was completed three years later at a cost of €1,555,000 and included new dressing rooms, TV studio, camera and commentary rooms and a new East Terrace.
that we are very proud of here.” Other projects that Peter and his team are proud of include the Tullamore Central Library and Tullamore Credit Union extensions. Between their work at O’Connor Park and various different government-funded educational projects, Kenny Lyons Associates Architects were able to weather the storm which hit the Irish construction industry hard from 2007 up until recent times.
Unsurprisingly, the excellent work carried out by Kenny Lyons Associates Architects saw the Practice hired again by Offaly GAA for a project in Kilcormac which broke ground last year, as Peter explained: “We are currently working on another project with Offaly GAA in Kilcormac which we would have started in 2014. It’s a €2 million development that includes four new full-sized pitches, along with the construction of dressing rooms, a gym and player facilities. We are also working with Laois GAA on the new Laois Centre of Excellence.”
Darma Community Centre, Tullamore
He continued: “I think we earn projects like these ones through the proven track record that we have. We delivered the O’Connor Park project on schedule and to the budget, it was a well-designed project and one of many Director Peter Lyons

Peter is happy to report that, as of now, the Practice is experiencing a big upturn in comparison to the immediate years after the company changed its name to Kenny Lyons Associates Architects. “In 2005 we were still in the boom in this country and we had a couple of very big projects in full flow,” he said. “The downturn hit a couple of years later, probably around 2007, but we managed to keep the core of our staff thankfully and we are very much looking forward now. We have grown a lot over the last few years and right now we are very busy. There was a little bit of a lull earlier this year when the country had no government in place. That would have affected us as funding for educational projects slowed, but things have picked up again and we are quite busy at the moment.” One of the company’s most recent projects, the 20 classroom St Mary’s National School in Edgeworthstown, Co Longford, saw Kenny Lyons honoured when the project was shortlisted for the ‘Best Educational Building’ award at the CGM awards. While educational projects have been the theme for many firms for the better part of a decade now, Peter has seen plenty of evidence of the residential market picking up again. “For the last six or seven years the only construction projects going to site were school projects, but there is more diversity now and we need that,” he stated. “While Dublin is starting to boom again, prices have not yet recovered everywhere and the midlands are still definitely affected even though things are improving. We are starting to see some residential projects spring up again around Tullamore and other provincial towns. We are currently working on an apartment scheme for Tullamore and a number of school projects in various locations. For the second half of 2016 we would hope to see some more viable residential projects.”

Vincent Doherty Ltd is currently working at the Beacon Hospital in conjunction with Stewart Building Contractors
THE ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR OF CHOICE
This past May saw Vincent Doherty Ltd celebrate its 46th year in existence, so we felt it was time to catch up with company co-director Maria Doherty to discover more about the Dublin-based business.
They say turning your family company into a success is one of the most rewarding things you can do in business and over the past 46 years the Doherty family in Harold’s Cross have been making it work through thick and thin. Also known as Vincent Doherty Electrical Engineers & Contractors, the company is fully Irish owned and
has been achieving its success through their consistently high quality work that that they’ve delivered to various clients down through the years. Maria Doherty is an engineer with the company and also holds a managerial position as co-director, along with her uncle Kevin and father Vincent, who is head of operations. She explained that the management team at Vincent Doherty Ltd work together and utilize their vast knowledge and experience in carrying out the electrical installation of all types of public sector, education, health care, industrial and commercial projects. “We’re based in Harold’s Cross in
Dublin and the company would have been set up in May 1970,” Maria outlined. “I’m an engineer with the company and I’m here since 1993. Obviously Vincent Doherty owns the company and his brother Kevin is a director as well. “Basically we would be electrical contracting mostly and a little bit of design work as well. Before Vincent started the company he would have worked with numerous different contractors, both here and in England, before eventually taking the decision to go out on his own and this is the kind of work that we concentrate on today.” Vincent Doherty Ltd has been delivering projects safely, and on

schedule, to a very high standard and within budget since its inception in 1972. It is this impressive track record which has made them the electrical contractor of choice for industry leaders through five different decades. As RECI certified contractors and through performance to E.T.C.I. National Rules, I.E.T Regulations and E.S.B. Requirements, they reflect their skills and efforts first time in the high quality of finished projects and level of client satisfaction. Innovation in solutions and a highly trained and dedicated staff are the two of the company’s unique selling points, according to the Vincent Doherty Ltd website (vdoherty.com). Another salient selling point is their huge focus on working solutions from a clear interpretation of the clients’ requirements. So how is business at the moment at Vincent Doherty Ltd? “It has picked up a lot,” Maria explained. “The last year or so has seen a real turn around in the industry. Even the last six months have been fairly busy but there’s no doubt about it, times were tough up until then. “In the past we’ve worked on St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin and we also did work with OPW in Dublin Zoo and the Prison Services in Limerick. We’ve done the retail in Brown Thomas as well, which also brings us out of Dublin.” She continued: “Right now we’re currently working on the Neurology Department at Beacon Hospital in conjunction with Stewart Building. We’re also working on projects in Lansdowne House and St James Hospital, and recently completed a project at the A&E in Tallaght Hospital.” At Vincent Doherty Ltd, the belief has always been that successful implementation of a project depends on controlling the many factors involved from the initial design through to completion. Consultation and communication between them and the client is of paramount importance as well. They employ all of their own technical staff, including engineers etc., and have vast experience in managing sub specialists if required. Down through the years they have consistently worked with various clients and their consultants

STEELED FOR SUCCESS
The impressive Kiernan Structural Steel facility in Co. Longford
There was good news for Co. Longford recently when Kiernan Structural Steel Ltd (KSSL) announced that it’s to create 50 new jobs as part of a €3.5 million expansion of its Carrigglas facility. The jobs in manufacturing, installation, quantity surveying and draughtsmanship will bring to 150 the total number employed by the familyowned structural steel manufacturer.
Starting from humble beginnings manufacturing agricultural sheds in 1989, Kiernan Structural Steel Ltd has grown into one of Ireland’s leading structural steel firms. The announcement of the new jobs was made at the official opening of the company’s new state-of-the-art extension which was performed by the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Mary Mitchell O’Connor on May 27th last. BUILDING IRELAND
This new investment is in response to increased demand from clients for the facility to apply high-quality fire proofing intumescent paints, particularly for multi-national clients. Welcoming the announcement, Minister Mitchell O’Connor said: “I am delighted that Kiernan Structural Steel, a highly-innovative Irish company which is expanding rapidly in export markets, is creating 50 jobs. The growth of this familyowned business based in Longford for the last 27 years is great news for the Midlands region.”
74
KSSL managing director Frank Kiernan noted how the 43,000 sq. ft. expansion would increase the company’s production capacity. “Kiernan Steel was founded on being a solution provider for technically challenging structural steel projects for the Irish and British steel construction industries with an eye for further market expansion. This new extension gives us the opportunity to increase our annual production capacity and has led to the securing of some very large projects in Ireland and the UK,” he says. The expansion of the Carrigglas facility brings the total factory area to almost 125,000 sq. ft. The extension includes 30,000 sq. ft. of a new paintshop which is required to meet the growing need for offsite applied fire intumescent painting. As part of the new paintshop, KSSL has added a one-of-a-kind in Ireland 3m x 1.8m post fabrication Kaltenbach shot blaster which cleans the surfaces of steel

members prior to the application of paint. KSSL also added 13,000 sq. ft. to the engineering workshop and a new high-speed steel plate cutting and drilling line. These new facilities have placed the Longford Company at the top of its market and are in high demand by some of Ireland and the UK’s most prestigious clients. In addition, KSSL has opened an office and fabrication facility in London (Perivale) in the past two years to cater for its
growing UK client-base. KSSL was established by husbandand-wife Frank and Dolores Kiernan, who are now joined in the business by their sons Frank Jnr and John, and daughter Claire. When they both lost their jobs in 1989, Frank and Dolores considered emigrating to the UK or America in search of work but, with four children under the age of eight, they felt that leaving Ireland wasn’t an option. Instead, they set up Kiernan

Structural Steel and the rest, as they say, is history. “Things were very bad at the time,” Frank remembers. “I had been working in the steel erection business since 1972 and Dolores in accounting and bookkeeping. We had just built a new house and the kids were very young at the time. We were left with two choices – emigrate or make the business work. Thankfully, we managed to make the business

work, but it didn’t happen overnight. “Working out of a two-bay hayshed at the rear of our house, we started making small sheds for local farmers. We progressed from there into industrial units,” adds the Killoe man, who served his time initially as an apprentice welder with Steel Fabricators in Longford town before going on to work all over Ireland as a foreman with Dublin company JMSE. Nowadays, KSSL provides a wide range of services to the steel construction industry, including projects where clients request value engineering for their structural steelwork. Among the services offered are: design engineering, steel fabrication, steel erection, cladding and roof metal decking, floor metal decking and welded shear studding, castellated beams and steel trusses manufacture, fire protection painting. The firm constantly strives to meet client expectations on project programme and on budget without affecting quality, health & safety or the environment. KSSL has worked on projects for many blue chip companies, including tech giants Google and Intel,
pharmaceutical firms Elan, Abbott, Baxter, Merck Sharpe and Dohme, food companies Kerry, Glanbia and Diageo, and retail brands such as Dunnes Stores, Tesco, Lidl, Musgraves, Aldi and Pallas Foods. Irish Rail and Irish Cement are also good customers. During the recession, KSSL’s turnover fell from €13 million in 2007
to €3.5 million in 2010. This forced the Kiernan’s to look beyond the Irish market for the first time and with the help of Irish builders and developers based in London, they were able to break into the UK market and thus turn their fortunes around. “We had to broaden our horizons when the recession hit in order to survive,” explains John Kiernan, who

is a structural engineer by profession. “The UK is a big market for us now. We’ve done projects in London, Liverpool, Birmingham, Preston and Scotland. We’ve also worked in Hannover in Germany with Sisk Builders on a project for Primark.” KSSL has been involved in numerous high-profile projects here in Ireland, including Elan pharmaceuticals in Athlone, Co. Roscommon, the Guinness Brewhouse at St. James’s Gate in Dublin, Intel in Leixlip, Co. Kildare, Irish Cement in Duleek, Co. Meath, Pallas Foods in North Dublin, Kerry Foods in Naas, Co. Kildare, Google and Bristol-Myers-Squibb (both Dublin). Examples of the company’s work can also be found in sports stadia such as the Oval Cricket Ground in London, Elvery’s MacHale Park in Castlebar, Dublin’s Parnell and Dalymount Parks and O’Connor Park in Tullamore. Quality assurance on every project is of utmost importance in all of KSSL’s operations. From tender enquiry through design, fabrication and erection, a quality system design to ensure complete satisfaction for the client is employed. KSSL is accredited to ISO 9001 for quality management and has a certified Factory Production Control (FPC) to Execution Class 4 to EN 1090 and welding Quality Management System (WQMS) which enables the company to CE mark all its products. KSSL is also a registered BCSA company and is on the RQSC (Register of Qualified Steelworker Contractors Scheme) which provides extra confidence to clients and consultants alike. It was the first Irish company to obtain NHSS 20 certification which is the execution of steelwork in the UK National Highways Sector Scheme. In 2013, the Kiernan family set up a separate company, Green Rock Ltd, which is the Irish agent for RAPID EPS edge protection systems for concrete structures, steel structures, timber frame structures, trenching systems and trailer systems. Green Rock is the English translation for Carrigglas.

THE DEMOLITION EXPERTS
Loftus Demolition is one of Ireland’s leading demolition and civil engineering firms, with a proven track record going back to the 1950s. Based in Cork, the third generation family-run business has earned a reputation for expediting work safely, cost effectively and in an environmentally aware and no-nonsense manner.
The company operates across the whole spectrum of the construction industry and brings a knowledge and experience gained over the past 60 years to every project it undertakes. Loftus Demolition has carried out contracts all over Europe for a wide range of clients in the private and public sectors. Indeed, many of the same clients have been dealing with Loftus for half-acentury or more. While maintaining its core values, the company has evolved over the years with the emphasis having shifted to place safety and
environmental awareness at the highest level when planning or executing any project. The demolition and civil engineering business has traditionally been labour intensive and dangerous. However, recent developments in technology has resulted in innovation which minimise the dangers associated with demolition operations. Loftus Demolition has invested heavily in such innovations and now operates a modern fleet of equipment which includes a range of high reach demolition excavators up to 46 metres; robotic remote control demolition equipment; cold cutting hydraulic metal shears; hydraulic concrete pulverisers; hydraulic selector grabs; hydraulic spark-free tank plate cutters; vibration-free concrete demolition munchers; concrete cutting saws; complete range of conventional excavators, rock-breakers from .75 tonne to 60 tonne; a fleet of multi-wheeler trucks, including specialist grab trucks. “Our Komatsu excavator is the highest reaching machine of its 79
kind in Ireland,” Hilary Loftus proudly states. “It has a reach of 46 metres and is currently working on a contract we are carrying out on a disused hall at Waterford docks. We have a huge variety of equipment to cater for any demolition job. We are a well-established name in Munster and indeed throughout Ireland. We have also worked in the UK and Germany. “While we have carried out some of the largest and most challenging projects in Ireland over the last 50 years, we carry out smaller residential contracts with the same levels of safety and efficiency. As well as being specialists in demolition, civil engineering, dismantling and structural engineering, we can also carry out asbestos removal.” Loftus Demolition’s attention to detail, dedicated staff, state-of-theart equipment and vast knowledge and experience has made it the market leader in its specialist categories. The Cork-based concern has the expertise and wherewithal to get your job done BUILDING IRELAND

safely and efficiently. Undoubtedly the most high-profile contract Loftus Demolition has undertaken recently was the demolition of the iconic Pairc Ui Chaoimh stadium in Cork. Over a four-month period last summer, the Loftus team demolished both spectator stands at the home of Cork GAA, leaving just the playing pitch and the two terraces. The
demolition works were the first phase of a €70 million revamp of the old bowl-shaped ground into a top-class modern sports venue which will boast a 45,000 capacity when completed. As a former Glen Rovers and Delaney Rovers GAA player and a lifelong resident of Cork city, it was entirely fitting that the contract was awarded to Hilary and his family.

“As a Cork GAA supporter, it meant a lot for me to be associated with that contract. My wife Veronica comes from one of Blackrock and Cork’s most famous hurling families, the Coughlan’s. Eudie and John Coughlan won several All-Ireland medals with Cork in the late 1920s and early 1930s,” he explains. Hilary took over the running of the family business from his father and founder John, and now his son Roy is following in his footsteps. The Loftus’ have been responsible for demolishing many landmark buildings in the greater Cork area down through the years. These include the R&H Mill on Victoria Road in 1972 and the Magnasite Plant in Dungarvan, Co. Waterford for Pfizer Pharmaceutical 20 years later. In the past decade, Loftus Demolition has enhanced its portfolio by carrying out an array of prestigious contracts. In 2007, the company was contracted by Bowen Construction to demolish a 60-storey concrete building constructed in the 1970s adjacent to the Grand Parade at Dartmouth Place in Dublin. The project presented its own challenges due to its proximity to the Luas line and the heavily trafficked Canal Road.

Loftus Demolition carries out work across Ireland and mainland Europe
Also in 2007, Loftus Demolition carried out asbestos removal and demolition works on the O’Callaghan Properties Academy Street development in Cork. The project duration was 14 months and involved many different types of demolition procedures, including the use of robotic demolition equipment, high-reach demolition excavators and cold cutting equipment. In July 2009, as a result of a fire, Origin Enterprises awarded the contract to demolish their famous Cork Docklands Miag silos to Loftus Demolition. The 24 steel
silos, which were 55-metres high, were demolished using a 45-metre high reach excavator. All steel and concrete arising from the demolition works was recycled for reuse. Another high-profile contract involved demolishing the Sarsfields and Bandon Road pedestrian overbridges in Cork in 2011. Loftus had just 72 hours to demolish the post-tensioned bridges which spanned one of the busiest junctions in Munster. The bridges were demolished to a designed sequence which mitigated the dangers associated
with disassembling post-tensioned structures, using a combination of hydraulic pulverisers and rockbreakers. All materials arising from the demolition works were recycled for reuse in the new road construction, while the contract was completed safely and 18 hours ahead of the 72-hour contract period. Hilary concludes by saying: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank our customers for their loyalty and support over the years. We look forward to catering for all their demolition needs for many more years to come.” Loftus Demolition
