business.. The success of the business can be gauged by the fact that the company started in an 8x10 office and now they command a 27,000sq ft premises in Swords. “I would have spent a lot of time listening to customers to learn what they wanted and what they were missing from other services. A lot of them were telling me the same thing, so I decided to try and set-up a business which would satisfy them. I've been involved in the haulage industry all my life as my family are also in the industry. So through my experience and that of Martine's, which was developed during our time with Frans Maas and DSV, we decided to set up our own business." OES Logistics offer their customers a comprehensive range of services, which include next day nationwide delivery and collection service along with imports and exports from the UK and most European countries. Document management, an integrated system and GPS tracking systems are also included. “Exporting is where our main area of business is concentrated on at present as the domestic market has subsided somewhat in the last few years. “We offer a first class range of services, ranging from our professional Road Freight, Air Freight, Sea Freight and Storage. Major environmental award for Larkin Engineering Larkin Engineering is bucking the recession by winning major contracts and awards. General manager Stephen Larkin explains more.

L

arkin Engineering in Galway made headlines recently when it won the European Product award for applying eco-design and waste minimisation principles to its 120-litre Jumbo bin product, which has reduced the resources and materials consumed per bin manufactured. Energy savings per bin produced is equivalent to the amount used to travel 520km in an average family car. The Tuam, Co. Galway-based family operation was one of just three Irish winners at the European Business Environmental Awards – the others being Roadstone Wood in West Dublin and Irish Cement in Co. Louth. Announcing the winners, IBEC’s Director of Policy Brendan Butler said: “These awards provide an opportunity to showcase the best of Irish innovation in environmental management and practice. The number and quality of Irish entries this year reflect the increasing importance of environmental issues for businesses of all types and sizes.” Larkin Engineering general manager Stephen Larkin said the award was unexpected. “We’re in a bit of shock, but delighted at the same time,” he smiled. “We weren’t expecting to win it to be honest. We had lost out to Cold Chon in Oranmore in the Galway Business Awards. Their product had zero per cent waste emissions and you can’t get much better than that. “We are committed to producing environmentally friendly products and it’s nice to be recognised for that. This award has given our company a massive lift, and any sort of a lift in the IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

current economic climate is great. Most of all, it proves that the work we are doing is paying off.” Established in 1985 by Noel Larkin, who initially carried out repair work to machinery at the old Irish Sugar factory in Tuam, Larkin Engineering is a part of Larkin Engineering Enterprises, which also comprises Larkin Street Products. Larkin Engineering has been a leader in the manufacture of general engineering components and street furniture for over 25 years. Today, the Larkin family remains committed to continuing the tradition of manufacturing innovative and quality products for both the public and private sector. Twenty staff are employed between the two divisions. The company provides precision engineering solutions to a diverse range of industries, and offers a complete service in design, manufacture and production of low volume to mass-produced components, as well as light fabrication and tube manipulation. Clients include JFC, CEL, CPS, APC and Cormac Sheep Equipment. The antidote to harsh winters Romaquip Ltd. is the leading designer, manufacturer and supplier of winter road maintenance equipment in Ireland and the UK. Since starting out in Birr, County Offaly almost three decades ago, the company has forged an unrivalled reputation in a niche market, providing an incredibly high quality of product and service. Irish Trucker gets an insight from co-founders and directors Ray Leonard and John McKeown.

R

omaquip designs, manufactures and supplies superior quality stainless steel winter road maintenance equipment - salt gritters, salt spreaders, body swap systems and snow ploughs. These are sold in Ireland, the UK and continental Europe. The quality of the product is beyond question, stainless steel construction and superior build quality resulting in a virtually unlimited lifespan and low maintenance costs. Romaquip spreaders are rust free and customers will testify to having the lowest operating costs in the sector. Romaquip salt spreaders and snow ploughs are fitted with latest Canbus technology to provide operator-friendly interfaces and controls, maximising the potential of the operator’s fleet. The full range of products supplied includes permanent mount salt spreaders (dry and pre-wet), demountable salt spreaders (dry and pre-wet), mini salt spreaders, micro spreaders, body swap systems, snow or slush ploughs and the recently-added kerb-side recyclers. “Romaquip is an abbreviation of road maintenance equipment,” says co-founder Ray Leonard. “We started out

48

manufacturing the winter maintenance equipment like gritters and snow ploughs but have now developed the most efficient kerb-side refuse recycling collector – the Romaquip Kerb-Sort - which caters for smaller bins for recycling, dividing the materials up upon collection so that segregation is completed before the driver gets back to the yard. The Kerb-Soft was designed through working with a number of recycling companies over the years, whose input was used to create a streamlined, ergonomic and flexible utility vehicle. Material is easily sorted at the householder’s collection point into specific compartments on the Kerb-Sort vehicle and then unloaded at the operator’s depot without any further sorting required, thus providing totally contamination free recycling products. The most efficient kerbside collection vehicle on the market, Kerb-Sort’s is easy to operate during collection and offloading. Kerb-Sort can function effectively with two operators and is built for maximum health and safety. It is also extremely fuel efficient, with impeccable green credentials. To maximise the range and efficiency of recycling, IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

compartments can be assigned to different materials, on-board compacting ensures a higher payload and the vehicle can unload in seven minutes, with unloading operated from the cab. “We offer sales and hire of our equipment and we can give a 20-year anti-perforation warranty on our gritters due to the stainless steel construction,” John notes. “These gritters can be fitted onto any truck currently being used by local authorities throughout Ireland. Most of the spreaders we sell to the local authorities in the UK are permanentlymounted machines, with their hydraulic power supply taken from the live drive output from the vehicle engine. “In 2007 we won the Highways Agency contract in the UK and to-date have fitted upwards of 200 salt spreaders and snow ploughs on to various marques. “Currently the Kerb-Sort is fitted on a DAF LF45 because its chassis is low to the ground.” Where spreading is needed on car parks, pavements, secondary roads, primary roads, dual carriageways, highways or motorways, Romaquip can find the best possible solution. The County Offaly based company can fit a salt spreader to almost any donor vehicle by utilising its flexible 3D CAD design process. Romaquip commenced trading in 1984 in Birr, quickly gaining a reputation for a high standard of workmanship and quality products. In 1991, Romaquip moved its operation to a nearby purpose-built manufacturing facility, enabling it to IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

expand its operations while remaining close to skilled employees. Regarding clientele, Ray explains: “In Ireland it would be all local authorities as well as the various toll roads and motorway operators. It would be similar in the UK, where our biggest customer is the Highways Agency, who are responsible for all the motorways throughout the UK. We were already dealing with various contractors in the UK previously but getting the Highways Agency contract in 2007 was the big one. We have also supplied major contracts such as the M6 toll in the UK.” Romaquip boasts almost 30-years’ experience in the design and manufacture of winter road maintenance products. During this time, the company has developed an enviable level of customer loyalty and support. Continuous heavy investment into research and development by their design team has resulted in products that are easy to use, safe and of the highest quality. Reducing maintenance cost for the product owner has been a key factor in manufacturing and selling all products. Building products in stainless steel allows a guarantee against rust and produces an attractive, durable product that lasts up to three times longer than similar mild steel products. The Romaquip design team are strong in design and technical innovation and are meticulous in quality, finish and attention to detail. State-of-the-art technology and ongoing research allows Romaquip to customise products to suit

individual client's specifications, offering a keen advantage over similar products. The company recognizes the need for consistently high-quality products and believes that commitment to continuous improvements in manufacturing techniques will keep Romaquip to the forefront of an everchanging marketplace. Romaquip employees pride themselves on the personalised service given to

customers. Gritters and spreaders are manufactured almost entirely in stainless steel. Considering the aggressively corrosive environment that highway maintenance vehicles operate in, this is a massive advantage. Where other spreaders disintegrate within a few short years, Romaquip spreaders which are now over 18 years old cannot be distinguished from new models in terms of steel integrity.

Furthermore, Romaquip’s 3D solid modeling techniques allow an exact virtual model of any particular machine to be kept on file. This means that a customer who requires any spare part can be confident that an exact replica can be supplied with a minimum of fuss, with every nut and bolt accounted for. Romaquip works out of one of the most modern manufacturing facilities in Europe, utilising the latest

Plans are in place to expand the factory by 40 per cent and add 65 more jobs within the next three years. On-going R&D within the company has ensured that Romaquip are in a position to offer satellite-controlled salt spreaders, which will automate salt spreading and guarantee highly accurate spreading. Looking to the future John McKeown concludes: “Further substantial investment in our software division which designs & writes all of our product control software will place us at the forefront of spreading technology. The R&D department currently employs ten fully qualified engineers who ensure that we are ahead of the competition. Advance software is vital – if you can reduce your salt usage from ten grams per square metre to eight grams per square metre and still maintain excellent ice free roads, then a massive 20% savings can be made. has been hit harder than most, while the increase in diesel prices has left company margins very tight at the moment. And the knock on effect for those connected to the industry has been there for all to see, and although Niall admits that business has slowed slightly, they still strive to deliver the same level of service that their customers have become accustomed too since they first opened their doors in 2007. “At Tyrone Truck & Trailer we pride ourselves on excellent Customer Service. We believe that in our industry the key to happy customers is the ability to get their supplies as soon as possible,” said Niall. “Customers can avail of a 24hour a day, seven day a week free of charge callout service for all stock items. In order to achieve this, we carry an extensive range of stock including parts from leading manufacturers, including Febi, Rubbolite, Hella, ROR, BPW, WABCO, KNORR BREMSE and SACHS. “We also have a wide range of genuine filters for DAF, Volvo and Scania and our dedicated sales team ensures same day delivery on all stock items.” Niall revealed that if the part required is not on the premises, they will endeavour to have it with the customer as soon as possible. “If we do not have the requested item in stock our sales team will be happy to try and source the item requested. Over the last five years we have built strong trade relationships allowing us to source high quality parts for our customers at a competitive price.” Tyrone Truck & Trailer has been meeting the growing demand for truck spare and trailer parts in Northern Ireland for over five years now. “When it comes to trailers and commercial vehicles our staff have a wealth of experience and expertise that IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

We can also source non standard products quickly from a range of manufacturers and have them delivered to our premises in a couple of days.” Some customers have been with Tyrone Truck & Trailer since they first established, while new ones are always been added to the portfolio as their reputation grows rapidly. Not only is their reputation growing, but they moved to a larger premises last year in order to cope with the increased stock levels required to service their customer base. “We place a great emphasis on customer satisfaction and that is always our main focus, we know that these are testing times for all hauliers, but we intend to keep trying to increase the customer base and I'm pleased with the direction that the company is heading.” Niall admits that without the help of his loyal employees, then the business would not be as successful as it is today. “There are four employed here and all are very capable in their jobs and they are there to deal with any enquiries that the customer may have.

L

ocated in Lucan, West Dublin, Boyle Motors Garage has the capacity to repair and service all commercial vehicles. Their team of trusty technicians have years of experience on truck and trailer systems and Boyles have the capacity and workforce to handle all jobs on all commercial vehicles from vans, trucks, block lorries, tippers all the way up to 40-foot articulated vehicles and tractors. Their plant fitters and diesel mechanics can also work with agricultural vehicles. All vehicles receive the utmost care from the moment they enter the workshop and each job is treated as a challenge by the hardworking team who love nothing more than a puzzle to solve. Diagnosing and then fixing complex problems is a proven specialty and Boyle Motors Garage is a veritable hive of activity from 9am to 6pm Monday to Friday as well as 9am to 2pm on Saturdays. No job is ever considered too big or too small. All types of vehicles are serviced and repaired and the Boyle IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

family has accumulated four decades of experience working with truck and trailer systems as well as all types of cars, vans and SUVs. Competitive pricing and customer satisfaction are guaranteed; Boyle Motors now has full truck diagnostics on site to help repair and reset commercial vehicle electrical systems and control units. All makes from Mercedes, DAF, Scania, Mitsubishi, MAN and Renault to Volvo, ERF, Hino and Iveco (and many more) can be serviced, diagnosed and repaired. Boyle Motors Garage boasts two main commercial sections - general maintenance and DOE repairs, where they do everything from brakes and clutches to servicing and getting vehicles successfully through their DOE tests. Their other main interest is diagnostics & electronics, where they could be asked to look into a vehicle showing various problem symptoms, like low power or engine, airbag or ABS warning lights on. For this, Boyle Motors operate multiple diagnostic systems, most of which are main dealer equivalent, allowing them to read all that is happening with the engine and computer and also oscilloscope systems to preview the exact movements of actuators and read sensors directly before the computer sees the information. This is particularly useful when diagnosing components like common rail injectors or crankshaft position sensors which operate in a millisecond timescale. All work is carried out in a friendly and helpful environment, with advice freely offered on all aspects of vehicle care and a heated waiting room available to customers who can watch TV or relax and read a newspaper while their vehicle is being sorted. “We’re a long time established at this stage and we’re very comfortable doing all kinds of work,” notes Ian Boyle. “We’re here since 1974 and it’s a family business with my father Martin, myself and my brother Mark, plus four mechanics. Between all of us, we have a full range of skills. “We can work on all cars and commercial vehicles, from a small Caddy or SUV up to tippers and HGVs. To be fair, there’s nothing we can’t turn our hand to. Diagnosing problems is one of the areas we specialise in and the lads love solving those riddles. If a warning light comes on in your vehicle, we will get to the bottom of it. “The range of skills we have gives us tremendous versatility and that’s what kept us above the breadline when things went quiet two or three years ago. We moved over to small commercial vehicles, SUVs and vans and about 90% of our income was based around that. Since then, it has moved back closer to 50 / 50 again between large commercials and small commercials / private cars.” In terms of technology, Boyle Motors are right up to speed. “We have a nice range of main dealer equivalent type diagnostic equipment. Most vehicles are based around the same technology anyway, allowing us to apply our learned experiences to other makes and problems. About 30% of our work is based around diagnosing the common rail diesel system, which is fully electronically-controlled. “I have spent a lot of time troubleshooting this complex system, which offers improved power and fuel economy but is also very sophisticated and elaborate. But, although a seemingly simple idea compared to some, it is quite sophisticated in operation. This is one of our expert areas. Diagnostics and problem solving are a very important part of our work. There is a new niche in the industry now solving these riddles. “We can analyse the entire system and run the vehicle through various tests to discover what’s needed to solve the

problem. In that respect, we have evolved from an everyday, run-of-themill garage into a much more technical operation with a vast knowledge of diagnostics and troubleshooting. All the lads here have a great interest in their work and that’s what has driven them to look further into the workings of all kinds of vehicles. “There are whole communities of people out there who tend to talk to each other and that’s how we have developed a great reputation – through word of mouth. For instance, commercial vehicle owners recommend us within their circle of contacts and we have also recently established a very good reputation for rebuilding or converting horsebox trucks. Our lads have a very wide

scope of specialities, which is serving us well.” Ian is adamant that the service provided at Boyle Motors Garage can match that which one might receive from a main dealer: “We have proven over the years that we can stand over all our work. We can diagnose and troubleshoot the most complex problems and we use main-dealer equivalent diagnostic equipment. “But we are less limited than the main dealers. As an independent garage, we can provide more services – say for example if an owner loses his key. We can over-ride the system and save him a lot of money. Our general labour costs will always be cheaper and we have fewer overheads.” Looking to the future, Ian is

understandably confident: “Margins are extremely tight but we keep ourselves busy by keeping prices down. We are developing a very good name for ourselves within the community. The economy is taking a slow curve but I think we are past the bottom now and hopefully heading for a more fruitful future. “You have to stay positive. This is a labour-intensive job and you simply have to put the hours in. There are new challenges every day to keep you interested. We have the same employee accounts here for the past ten years. The challenges keep them entertained and interested. That in turn breeds creativity and helps with problem solving.”

An impressive view of the forecourt

O’Leary Group leads the way Two thousand and twelve marks the 150th anniversary year of Opel. In 1862, the founding father, Adam Opel, could hardly have envisaged that his firm would one day become one of the biggest car makers in Europe.

O

pel has been a firm favourite of Irish motorists for many, many years and their continuation to produce such reliant and efficient vehicles sees them remain at the forefront of the motor industry in this country. One hundred and one years after Opel was founded, the Kevin O'Leary Group was established in 1963 by Kevin himself. The company is run by Kevin and his sons John and Kevin. The Group operates primarily in the motor retail and contract lease and fleet management business. More recently the Group has further developed its retail food store and forecourt business interests. Today, Kevin O'Leary Group's core business is its Opel, Honda and Nissan franchises, in Cork and Tipperary, its Contract Lease & Fleet Management Company, Hi-Line Leasing Ltd and its very successful high volume used car

business. Currently the Group has three Opel Passenger, three Opel Commercial and one Honda state of the art retail and service centres. The Group operates a franchised Nissan service centre in Silversprings, Cork City. Kevin O'Leary Group is an established motor group based in the South of Ireland, with outlets in Cork City, Bandon and Clonmel, Co. Tipperary. The Group also operates a Commercial Vehicle test center (VTN/LGV) in Bandon and Douglas, Cork. For this month's edition of Irish Trucker, we profile the Clonmel facility and speak to Assistant General Manager Willie Butler about the success of the business and the services they provide. The Clonmel branch was established in 1996 and through its location on the Cahir road, which has played no small part in

the success of the business, the customer base has increased on an annual basis. O'Leary's Opel, Clonmel is a one-stop shop for its customers as they offer a wide range of services. Some of these services include: “Opel Service Club where customers can enjoy up to 25% discount on Opel labour & parts. From time to time your car will require service and

We know that this can be expensive so we've launched Opel Service Club to provide you with significant savings on your car maintenance. Longwood Transport: a reliable service Experience in the haulage industry is essential to a successful business and to this end not many can match the longevity that Longwood Transport has built up over the years.

he company may only be trading as Longwood Transport since the mideighties, but this family run business was established in the 1930's and as Giles Brothers was involved in the haulage industry in one capacity or another. The haulage industry has changed dramatically over the years and indeed none more so than the last few years when

overheads have grown considerably, with the most problematic area being the rising cost of diesel. These days, Cathal Byrne, whose grandfather set up the initial business, runs the company and we spoke to the company managing director about the success of the business and his hopes for the future. Longwood Transport specialises in general haulage and has built up a large customer base over the years, many of who have been with

them for many years. “We specialise in bulk, tipper, flat, curtainsider and container work. We basically specialise in all general haulage and would do a lot of work out of the docks,” said Cathal. The company MD admits that ensuring that they have backloads on the trucks is an essential part of the day to day running of the business. “We wouldn't leave the docks unless we have a backload as it would not pay us to do so, giving

We would do a lot of work for the likes of Fast Shipping, who we've been with for over a decade now. “For the past many years, the company has been working with container and shipping lines and due to the time constraints of the industry, it is essential that we are on time, everytime. “You just cannot let anyone down in this game. As is the case with 99% of hauliers in the country, the issue of diesel prices is one that Cathal feels needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. “Since last October 12 months, the price of diesel has gone up 20%, which is crippling the industry. We have been forced to make a few cuts here and there, but we have ensured that this has not affected the service we provide. “The situation needs to be addressed sooner rather than later as it is damaging the industry no end. in Nangor Road Business Park has been a key reason behind its success. “It’s a great location from which to cover the city, central location is key. The Nangor Road is only 15 minutes from the city centre and with the M50 right beside us we can get to any part of Dublin within half an hour or less. I would estimate that about 75 per cent of our business is conducted in West Dublin. “Dublin has become a much smaller place since the road infrastructure was improved. It only takes 30 minutes to get from Baldoyle in north Co. Dublin to Bray in Co. Wicklow now. That’s some change from a few years ago. “Another reason why we’ve been successful is down to the fact that we have a set price list customers know exactly what they are being charged before we handle any goods. It means that customers know where they stand and that they don’t have to worry about any hidden costs or charges.” VanSpeed Couriers recently became a member of Palletxpess, which is Ireland’s only independent palletized freight network specializing in next-day distribution of express freight throughout the 32 counties and 48

hours services to and from the UK. Founded in 2004, Palletxpress operates from Naas, Co. Kildare and has former Dublin football captain and manager Tommy Carr as its managing director. With members in nearly every county, Palletxpress guarantees a fast and efficient solution to your needs for moving your pallet from ‘pick up’ to ‘delivery’ in a transparent and genuinely traceable manner. All members are fully licensed and insured to carry all Palletxpress freight and all are bound by a code of operational conduct. “We are able to offer a countrywide and international delivery service thanks to our association with Palletxpress,” Ken says. As a company Vanspeed Couriers are always looking to the future and are always one step ahead of the competition and are looking forward to the continued expansion of our next day nationwide and international service through our partnership with the palletxpress network. We here at Vanspeed Couriers feel our partnership is vitally important if we want to keep growing the company in the manner

that we have done so in the last three years. As I said, Dublin has become a much smaller place and we’re keen to broaden our horizons, and offering new services and maintaining the high level of Customer service and Communication which is key in this industry. And a big thank you to all those customers who have put their trust in our services over the past three years and look forward to many more years of success. “Our membership of the Palletxpress network gives us a platform to expand beyond the Dublin region,” he concludes.

The facility provides Vanspeed with the majority of their invoice value within 24 hours of them being raised, with the rest of it released to Vanspeed once their debtor makes the payment in full, minus our fee. Our service helps Vanspeed compete through offering good credit terms to their suppliers, without having any detrimental impact on their business. And the way our funding works mean as the Vanspeed business grows, so does the amount of cash we can make available to them - in the current climate, that’s more important than ever. An impressive view of the fleet

Celebrating in style For any company to reach their 25th anniversary is a huge landmark and Westport based haulage company Beirne Express celebrated reaching that milestone in emphatic style.

E

arlier this year, Beirne Express took delivery of the world's most powerful truck, Volvo FH16 750 Ocean Race Limited Edition, which is the first of its kind to be sold in Ireland This purchase was very fitting for Beirne Express in their anniversary year as the truck itself is celebrating a milestone; a Volvo 25th Anniversary edition and proudly wearing the Volvo Ocean Race Livery in recognition of the race ending in neighbouring Galway this July. It is a fitting tribute for the Mayo based company that has

been built up from scratch by Martin Beirne and for this month's edition of Irish Trucker; we profile the company and speak to the managing director about the success of the business. Martin started Beirne Express Freight on February 2nd, 1987 and through hard work and endeavour, the company now today operates a fleet of 12 trucks which are predominantly Volvo. Martin is very proud to have his wife Gerardine at the helm with him in addition to many other members of his family who between them have worked very hard over the last IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

“We also have a great working relationship with our customers, many of who have been with us since the start and we are grateful to them and we look forward to working with them for many years to come.” “I'm delighted with the new truck as it is very fuel efficient considering the power it has, which is a major plus, give the price of fuel at the moment.” Can Martin see anything be done about the continuous rise in the price of fuel? “There is a lot of talk about a fuel rebate, but in fairness there doesn't seem to be much happening. The IRHA in negotiations with the Minister to get it implemented, but the Government don't seem to be willing to introduce it just yet. “Something needs to be done and needs to be done quickly as it has reached crisis point in the industry. Over the past two years, the price of diesel has almost doubled, which is outrageous.” Beirne Express specialise in general haulage, refrigeration transport, container trunking as well as groupage and a lot of their work centres

quarter of a century to grow and build the business into the very successful operation that it is today. As a family orientated business, Gerardine looks after the accounts, while Martin's two brothers Kieran and Seamus as well as his son Lorcan are also an integral part of the business. “Yes you could say we are a small business and that has always been the case. There are 12 employees working here and each of them play their part in the success of the business, many of who have been with us years now. “We are delighted to have reached the landmark of 25 years, especially given the current economic climate. We have set high standards to meet and thankfully we have continued to meet them consistently,” said Martin. IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

around transporting medical goods all over the country. The company achieved the ISO 9001: 2008 standard back in '08 and have maintained the same level each year, which guarantees the customers the highest possible service. Maintenance is a key issue within the firm and Martin revealed that they carry out repairs on site. “We would do our own maintenance work and this helps cut down on any unnecessary breakdowns that may occur. The trucks are all maintained and the fleet is kept fairly new so this also helps to ensure that the day to day running of the business goes smoothly.” Like all companies, Beirne Express have experienced highs and lows and in 2010, the business suffered a huge setback when three of their trucks were burnt out in an accidental fire on the premises. The destroyed lorries were three to four years old and the cost of the damage was estimated to be in the region of €300,000. “That did set us back and it took us a while to get back where we are today, but we managed to do so and the aim is to continue providing the level of

service that our customers have become accustomed too.” From their premises in Westport, Beirne Express can boast two warehouses covering 20,000sq ft and Martin admits that overall that he is happy with the direction that the company is heading in. “We just have to knuckle down and work that bit harder through the current recession. In saying that we are pleased with the workload we have, but that's not to say we are always on the lookout for more work. I believe if we

can keep delivering the same level of service and ensure that the customers remain happy then we will be around for a few years yet.”

Track machines can be sourced from all over the world

MG: A reliable source As we all know, the haulage and construction industries has suffered greatly in the past two years or so and many involved in these industries have been forced to cut back on their fleets. Well, MG Plant & Machinery Sales could prove to be the saviour everyone is looking for.

T

he number of trucks and plant equipment sitting idle in yards around the country at the moment is frightening with some people being in the precarious position of still paying for the machinery. Many feel that they have no options left to them and the uncertain future is a genuine cause for concern. However, MG Plant is actively seeking second hand plant machinery, while offering very fair rates for their purchases. Martin and Michael Gleeson has been running the company since 1998 and over the years they have diversified into many areas to meet market demand. The brothers and their team source equipment all over the UK, Ireland and Europe and IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

export mainly to the Asian market. From their site at Swinford, Co Mayo, the company has a wide range of plant and machinery, which sees them as one of Ireland's leading supplier of this equipment. “We would stock up many units at any given time that includes a wide range of plant and machinery. We are always looking for second hand stuff to buy, so anyone that may be in a position to sell should get in contact with us,” said Martin. “We appreciate that the haulage and construction industries have suffered greatly in recent years and hopefully things will start to pick up in the near future. Three Castledooey tippers

That’ll doo nicely Within the space of seven years, Castledooey Transport Ltd. has made incredible progress, forging a stellar reputation for itself in the bulk haulage /tipper sector throughout Ireland and the UK. Irish Trucker met up with founder and MD Giles Goudie, who has nurtured the company from a onetruck operation to its present status as a modest but highly-respected concern.

C

Giles and Leonna Goudie in the office

86

astledooey Transport Ltd. is a family business owned and operated by founder Giles Goudie. Operating out of Castledooey, Manorcunningham, County Donegal, the company caters predominantly for the bulk industry in Ireland and the UK mainland. Having been established in 2005 and starting with one lorry, they now have four arctic units as well as a variety of trailers tailored towards the bulk haulage market. Flatbed and curtainsider trailers are also available and the company is continuously re- investing to ensure that all customer

requirements can be met. They also supply large amounts of high quality straw and hay to the farming community as well as some winter feeding materials. Castledooey Transport is TASCC-registered for haulage of animal feeds and combinable crops. Giles reflects on the genesis and early days of his company: “We’re exactly seven years in business now, having started out in May 2005 with one lorry. I’ve been driving lorries since I was 21, so I had eight years’ experience before I set up Castledooey Transport.” Why did he decide to set up his IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

own company? After all, there are a lot less headaches involved if you just work for somebody else… “I decided I would chance it on my own just to see how it would go. So far, it has worked out well. I bought one lorry and a brick trailer with a grab and drew bricks for the first six months. “I started out from scratch. I literally hadn’t even a single load when I bought the first lorry. My father was a meat wholesaler, selling meat throughout the county of Donegal. When I got my first job after leaving school it was at the local Co-Op as a forklift driver. I was loading lorries and that is where the interest came from.” Finding the optimum size is one of the key challenges facing any operator; knowing how to quit when you’re ahead. Often this involves resisting the urge to add more units to your fleet… “I’ve gradually built it up to four units,” Giles notes. “We could probably run more but to be honest I can’t see the benefits of getting any bigger. The costs involved mean I would love to just run two lorries and have even fewer headaches but with

Bobby and Lewis Goudie give a helping hand

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

The fleet is maintained to the highest standards

some of the contracts we have at the moment we simply couldn’t fulfil them with two trucks. But we also have some sub-contractors we use on a regular basis, so I can take on any job.” This sense of togetherness is something Giles feels is sadly lacking from the haulage community as a whole: “I think there’s not enough people helping each other out in haulage. That’s one of the reasons why rates are so bad, because they are cutting each other. It would be better for everyone if we all worked together and somehow tried to pull in the one direction. Maybe we’d find that there’s enough for everybody.” Since its inception, Castledooey Transport has evolved in line with the market and customer demands. “We’ve changed quite a lot,” Giles confirms. “We were doing brick trailer work in the beginning and then moved onto a flat trailer. Then after a year we then got a tipper trailer and I bought a brand-new flat trailer, which was the first brand-new vehicle bought by the company. “I did a bit more tipper work and as time went on, we concentrated more on that side. The second lorry was with Interlink Express in

87

Athlone and we had the lorry and two vans running from Letterkenny to Athlone every night. “Due to the way the economy was going downhill, work at home was becoming quieter, but we wanted to spread our wings so I decided to try a bit of tipper work in the UK and we are quite busy with that and bought the third truck for UK work a few years ago. We’re currently doing tipper work between Ireland and the UK and internally in the UK but we’re also hoping to spread to the continent before the end of 2012.” At the moment, the Castledooey Transport fleet comprises four lorries and eight trailers, three of which are tippers. The trucks are two MANs, a Mercedes and a Scania. “With the MANs, we have easy local access to parts and repairs, but I decided to try out the Mercedes this time and I’m pleased with it,” says Giles. “We do 80% of our own repairs and we also do all the servicing and keep service records etc. I keep a tight handle on that myself and I also still go out every day and do all my own tipper work.” Of course, in this line of work you are only as strong as your weakest link. So,

Giles tries to ensure that there are no weak links in his business: “We try to stay a step ahead and keep a good stock of tyres and parts, because all the trucks are away from Monday – Friday and you need to have the stuff on hand on a Saturday in case you have to carry out any repairs or anything. You have to think ahead. “As well as myself, there are three lads working with me and my wife Leonna helps out in the office. I’ll also bring in a mechanic weekly, depending on the workload. We try to be as selfsufficient as we can because you simply have to keep the overheads down. But, at the end of the day, there’s only so much you can do – you can’t do everything yourself.” As we all know, the extortionate price of diesel is wreaking havoc with the livelihoods of everyone in the transport industry and Giles is as adversely affected as the next man: “Diesel prices now account for 55% of our running costs and they wouldn’t have been any more than 30% a few years ago. Diesel has become a major factor in the dayto-day operation of the business. “The fuel rebate would be a very positive thing if it came in. It would offer some respite to the genuine haulier

Rates aren’t moving with the times, but if you don’t ask you won’t receive. There is too much wheeling and dealing involved when it comes to rates and this shouldn’t be the case. If it costs X amount to run a lorry, then that’s what you should be getting – no less. It’s never easy to look at the crystal ball and see the future but we will be on the look-out for new products and we will advise our suppliers on how the industry is changing. Our fingers are firmly on the pulse and will continue to provide both new and existing customers with the best products and back-up service possible. “The biggest problem facing the haulage industry is the price of fuel which leads to very tight margins.
