he Gill Group, operate from their headquarters at Church Road, Ballina Co Mayo. Since this family run organisations' inception in 1972 the group has seen a whole new suite of businesses added as well as diversification within the group. Initially, the company was set up as Gill's Driving School in 1972 by Tiernan Gill Snr with just a Ford Anglia … but how things have changed in those forty years and the Gill Group now encompasses five very successful business entities. With the help of Managing Director Tiernan Gill, we profile the Gill Group and the companies that make up this family run business. Starting with Gill's Driving School, Tiernan reveals that they cater for all types of vehicle training. “Today we have a whole new fleet of vehicles offering licence acquisition in cars, jeep and trailer, rigid lorry, artic, minibus and coach in Ballina, Castlebar & Sligo as well as car tuition in Belmullet and Castlebar. All instructors are ADI qualified with the Road Safety Authority,” said Tiernan “First of all, we provide license acquisition training for learners in cars, rigid trucks, articulated trucks, buses, IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

minibuses, jeeps and trailers. This was introduced for bus drivers in September 2008 and will commence for truck drivers in September of this year.” In 2011 Gills Driving School were one of three fleet trainers in the country who were awarded Advanced Driving Contract with the ESB. All their Fleet Trainers are RoSPA Diploma holders, and have a certificate in training and development, members of IAM and the DIA. can also take contaminated fuel out of vehicles on-site and can do lock-outs on cars and commercials.” No off-road repair or accident vehicle pick-up job is considered too big or too small, with fleet services available and a fast, efficient response guaranteed at an affordable price. A modern fleet using the latest recovery technology will cover any distance, with a recovery service from Europe included. All recovery and repairs are carried out by a courteous, punctual and fullyqualified team of engineers, with all work fully guaranteed in keeping with the managing director’s total commitment to customer care. It was on two faraway continents that Alan served his apprenticeship in breakdown / recovery work, as he recalls: “I used to work for an American company down in Australia and I did repairs and HGV recovery for them. I also spent some time in the US and was involved in garage repairs / recovery work there as well. When I came home to Ireland, it seemed like the obvious line of work to get involved in. “I started off doing work with cars – recovery and repairs - on a very small scale. It was just one man, one truck in the early days. Soon, I took on a second man and we gave a very good service, so demand increased. We worked hard and gradually the business grew. “Today, I employ seven lads between IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

part-time and full-time and we run a fleet of ten recovery vehicles. The majority of these would be tilt and slides, with crew cabs that can carry up to seven passengers.” Ongoing investment has been central to Alan Graham’s success and, by continuously reinvesting money back into his company, he ensures that he has a modern fleet capable of carrying out the most complicated jobs with a minimum of fuss. “We recently added a 7530 John Deere with a 50K gearbox on her for the off-road recovery of HGVs. It has an eight-tonne blade and a 25-tonne winch. Last winter, we were able to handle a lot of very awkward jobs with this tractor and it is a real asset to the company. We also have two new Scanias, a Mercedes and a Toyota 4x4. “We can lift any commercial vehicle from six tonnes up to the heaviest HGV, working nationwide for both insurance companies and the actual hauliers themselves.” Needless to say, no two days in this line of work are ever the same. “From one minute to the next, you don’t know what you’re going to be doing,” Alan confirms. “But we are always prepared and ready for any scenario. Every day is different. You could be on a recovery job or a transportation job to another part of the country or somebody could be locked out of their car. You meet a lot of nice people out on the road and you get to help them out, which is

rewarding.” Alan is a hands-on MD, who is either out on the road himself or monitoring things from the office, where everything can be accessed instantly on-screen with the mere touch of a button. Alan Graham Recovery Services uses the latest Navman GPS tracking systems. “Mobile phones were just coming on the market when I set the company up and the coverage was very bad, but things have changed dramatically and now everybody can be contacted instantly. The strides in technology have been amazing and we have embraced these. “We are experiencing growth the whole time – maybe not as fast as we’d ideally like due to diesel prices – but we’re gaining ground and can’t complain,” he concludes.

Full of the Pipe: bigger and better Yes folks, its back, the Full of the Pipe Truck Show is heading for Cavan on June 3rd and 4th.

T

he event organisers Kevin Mulqueen and Colin Hegarty have moved venue and this year’s show will be held in the Cavan Equestrian Centre on the June Bank Holiday weekend. Following the success of last year’s event, Kevin and Colin have ensured that the show will be more appealing to wider audience with many more attractions included. The timing of the show is also a big bonus as hauliers will not feel that they have to rush home, given that it is a Bank Holiday weekend. The spirit of competition that manifests itself at these shows can be as intense as any sporting contest. The fevered brow of competitors just before the judging is announced and the inevitable post mortems that take place later are all part and parcel of these events. The banter that accompanies these events is an essential ingredient. So too is the praise and admiration that is heaped on the various winners. And where there are winners, there must be losers and the promise to come back next year with a winning entry. A NEW COVERED VENUE Kevin speaks to us about the 2012 Full of the Pipe and explains their reasons for moving from Athlone IT. “We decided that due to the unpredictable weather in Ireland, we needed a venue that was indoors, but to find one that was capable of housing so many trucks over the one weekend was going to be a problem,” said Kevin. “I was at an event in Ennis when I asked a lad was there an equestrian centre in the country that could facilitate us and he immediately said ‘yes in Cavan town’. “As soon as we saw the place, we were very impressed. The venue is on a 25 acre site, with the most of that inside, which allows truckers bring their trucks in the night before and they won’t have to be washing them again the next morning.” Kevin admits that the venue also allows more Northern hauliers to attend IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

he feels that logistically it is ideally place to host the event. “It’s a top class facility, simple as that and the location was key for us as lads from across the border will have easy access to the show.” BROADENING THE APPEAL Kevin revealed that after the success of last year’s show; the interest in this year’s has increased considerably, thus leading to the bigger venue. “There is a greater interest in this year’s show and the amount of people contacting us looking for information is unreal. We are not just catering for the truckers this year though, as car enthusiasts will also be catered for along with all the family. “We decided to introduce the elite cars as an added feature and this should attract a number of car enthusiasts, who normally wouldn’t attend truck shows. But this is a full on truck festival and one that we hope to see many truckers attend. So why not come along and enjoy the weekend’s fun. “There will be many trade stands on site over the weekend also, the majority of which will be catering for the haulage industry, while there will be others for the cars and even the children. “There are a lot more attractions for the kids too, like face painting, amusements, magic shows and that sort of thing. The theme for the weekend is Country & Western and we will have a live band playing.” IRELAND’S BEST SCANIA 143 Truckers are not requested to register for the event on June 2nd and it will be on a first come, first served basis. There are new categories added to the show, meaning that there are over 20 awards up for grabs. “The main event will be to find the Ireland’s best Scania 143. This will be a very interesting category and there has been loads of interest in it. The 143 is the most popular truck in Ireland and this is our way of honouring it.” GENEROUS SPONSORS Of course, there would be no show with the support of the sponsors and to this end, Full of the Pipe is very fortunate as Boreman Lighting, are the main sponsors, while Moran Signs, Spa Transport and the Cavan Crystal Hotel are also sponsoring the event. “Without the sponsors, we wouldn’t have a show, so I’m grateful to them and the many people that have helped out in organising the event. I’m not going to name them individually as I’m sure I’ll leave someone out, but they know who they are.” For truckers looking to stay over, the Cavan Crystal is offering a special deal for anyone attending the event. CHARITY SUPPORT This year’s show will see part of the money raised from the show go to a worthwhile charity. “Last year, we gave some of the proceeds to the Bernardo’s Children’s Charity and we will be doing the same this year, so we ask everyone to come along and support the event.” For further information contact Kevin Mulqueen on 0860850015 or Colin Hegarty on 0868051222.

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Trucker’s eye view At the end of the day, Full of the Pipe is all about the truckers. It’s the hauliers who make the show a success; it’s their participation, enthusiasm and support that renders the truck shows worthwhile. We spoke with two men who regularly bring lorries to the event – Gerry McQuaid of Dunsany Haulage Ltd. in Meath and Shane Kelly of Kieran Kelly Haulage Ltd. in Ennis, County Clare – to get their views on this key date in the Irish truck show calendar… o doubting where the place to be for truckers is this June Bank Holiday weekend! Full of the Pipe is back and Cavan Equestrian Centre will play host to the 2012 event on Sunday June 3rd (11am – 7pm) and Monday June 4th (11am – 3pm), with registrations taking place on a first-come, first-served basis on the Saturday, from 2pm until midnight. It’s going to be a truly spectacular trucking extravaganza and regular visitors Gerry McQuaid of Dunsany Haulage and Shane Kelly of Kieran Kelly Haulage intend to offer their support again.

N

Irish Trucker spoke to both men during the countdown to the show to get their perspective on a show that’s rapidly gaining momentum. GERRY MCQUAID, DUNSANY HAULAGE Meath man Gerry is particularly looking forward to the craic: “It’s a great social gathering for truckers

and you get to meet a lot of lads … lads you’d meet at all the shows. It’s always nice to catch up with them again. “Shows like this are very scarce now - you’d be lucky to have three or four in Ireland in a year – so we have to support them. It would be a disaster if there were no more shows anymore; it’s a great weekend for us. The Full of the Pipe has taken over from Boot to the Headlight as probably the main show now and it’s a very good social event. There’s also a show down in Fermoy, County Cork and another one up north and we try to go to them all. We’ll definitely be in Cavan in June.” Gerry has collected a number of prizes at Full of the Pipe over the years and he’ll probably be in contention again in 2012. “We tend to do well enough at every show,” he comments. “I think we took home two prizes last year, which was good. But the 57

standard is very high. It’s getting harder to win an award. Lads are looking after their trucks better now than ever before…” The economic crash has left everybody with considerably less money in their pockets but Irish hauliers haven’t lost their pride and that’s why vehicles – not just at shows but also on the road every day – are generally maintained in tip-top condition. “In the current climate, lads haven’t money to be spending on new trucks and a lot of them wouldn’t have much to spend on their existing trucks either, but they are looking after them all the same, even though there’s obviously not the same money being spent as there was back in the boom times.” How many trucks will Gerry bring to Full of the Pipe 2012? “We’ll bring two or three – probably two Volvos and the T-cab Scania that’s known as ‘The Hunky Dory Truck’. It won two prizes for us last year and I think it did the same the year before,” the proprietor of Dunsany Haulage notes. “Sure we’ll make a weekend of it and we’ll have a few drinks on the first night and see how it goes.” It has developed into a good family occasion, too, with plenty of attractions for everyone. Will the McQuaid clan be tagging along, then? “They went down to the show in 2010 and to be honest the truck scene isn’t their scene,” Gerry reveals. “This year I think the organisers do 58

seem to be going more into the whole family thing and they are trying to appeal to more age groups, but I’d say my crew will be staying at home!” Gerry has nothing but praise for Kevin Mulqueen and Colin Hegarty, whose work in organising the show every year is enormous: “It’s very professionally organised. I’ll tell you one thing: something like this is very hard to pull off and I certainly wouldn’t like to be the one organising it! It’s a professional as you could possibly get and you have to give the lads great credit. “This year’s event will be better too with the indoor arena. The weather has been a big factor in the past but we’ll be immune to that this time. There was an awful lot of rain last year and that turned a lot of people away.” Over the years, Gerry has travelled to truck shows all over the island – Wexford, Cork, Belfast, Ennis, Athlone etc. He’s looking forward to seeing what Cavan has to offer as a venue. He’s also looking forward to having a look at the trade stands etc. and seeing what innovations are on display this year: “Of course you pick up bits and pieces and you get talking to other people in the industry, who are perhaps involved in different aspects of trucking, and you learn about life in other areas. It’s interesting to get a view of the bigger picture of what’s going on in haulage in Ireland.

“While there will be a lot of the same people turning up at these shows year in, year out, you will always meet new people and learn from people with a fresh perspective on things. You’ll meet lads from different areas of the industry, from different parts of the country and you might be able to put a bit of work their way – or they might be able to give you a bit of work. That’s what this weekend is all about, that’s the sort of spirit that exists between the people who attend. We work together and try to help each other out and share a bit of work if we can.” Gerry had been driving trucks for 16 years now. He’s been out on his own for five years now, having been part of a partnership for two years prior to that. Dunsany Haulage provides a premium groupage service (full loads, part loads, back loads, single pallets, hazardous materials etc.), with a fleet of four artics and two vans on the road at present. SHANE KELLY, KIERAN KELLY HAULAGE Shane Kelly, transport manager with sand and gravel specialist Kieran Kelly Haulage in Ennis, is another man who loves the Full of the Pipe show, although the venue is a little bit further away for him this year as the round trip from Cavan to Clare will be a costly one. “Athlone suited us better, as it was only 90 minutes away,” he says. Shane 60

took the family company’s flagship Iveco to the show in the midlands last year, while his brother PJ drove the old Hino. “We got a couple of plaques out of it,” he recalls. “I’m sure the 2012 event is going to be another great success. We’re hoping to make it, even if it’s going to cost a bit more to bring the two trucks. It’s a great weekend but it’s a pity you have to think about justifying bringing two trucks to Cavan and back with no loads in them, especially when things are so quiet in the industry at the moment. “Dad doesn’t mind us going up to it but it would definitely be more practical if we were working away full steam ahead, which isn’t the case, unfortunately. We have some busy days but there are quiet days too. “I enjoyed the show last year in Athlone. I stayed up in the truck for the three nights and it was good craic. The lads from the North are good craic and it would be nice to meet up with those lads again. “It’s a great show and I’m hoping to make it.” The harsh realities of the life of a modern trucker are never far away but Full of the Pipe 2012 is on its way and will provide some welcome respite from these worries and concerns. Gerry McQuaid will definitely be there … we’ve a sneaky feeling Shane and PJ Kelly will make it too. Some things simply cannot be resisted! IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

a major player in the

REFRIGERATED TRANSPORT sector

Last year Irish Trucker magazine interviewed Coldcut Logistics following their success at the Fleet transport awards. Since then, Coldcut Logistics have continued to expand their business model and service their major customers in the consumer foods industry. Coldcut Logistics is now a major player in the refrigerated transport sector, and the company’s drive to continuously improve systems, quality controls and ultimately provide better quality service to their customers in the market place has seen Coldcut become ISO accredited in April 2012. “We have always had quality procedures in place and an ethos of high standards, however we felt that the ISO process would take our existing control infrastructure to the optimum level. We also wanted our existing customer base and any potential future customers to know that we wanted to operate at the highest level, and be certified on that basis. The ISO accreditation process began in early 2011, and was developed through a number of managed stages over the next 14 months. Changing processes can be an arduous task at the best of times, however a combination of hard work, team effort and determination prevailed and we were finally accredited in early April.”

Coldcut continued in their success during 2012 as they were shortlisted for the logistics company of the year at the Irish Logistics & Transport Awards 2012.

About the Venue:

Cavan Equestrian, Horse Marketing & Event Centre This year sees the leading Irish truck show move to a new venue and - in Cavan Equestrian, Horse Marketing & Event Centre - Full of the Pipe may have finally found its ideal home. As the countdown continued to June Bank Holiday weekend, we headed into the Breffni County and caught up with Stuart Clarke, general manager of the largest equestrian complex in the country, to get more details on the scene of the 2012 event.

O

ne of the first things to stand out is the ease of access. Located on the outskirts of Cavan town, easily accessible from all directions, Cavan Equestrian, Horse Marketing & Event Centre is the biggest and busiest equestrian centre in the country. It may be renowned for showjumping and all other equestrian events, with proven success in organising and running international performance horse and pony sales, but it is also becoming increasingly popular as an events centre. 12,000 SQ. METRES OF INDOOR CAPACITY One of the real draws of the 2012 Full of the Pipe is that it will take place indoors. With 12,000 square metres of indoor space available (as

well as outdoor areas), the weather issues that plagued previous Full of the Pipes has been put to bed for once and for all. About five years ago, major re-development transformed Cavan Equestrian, Horse Marketing & Event Centre into a versatile venue for hosting all sorts of events – large scale or small scale, concerts or exhibitions, indoor or outdoor. The aforementioned 12,000 square metres capacity comprises three arenas all under one roof: Arena One has 3,888 square metres of floor space as well as three balconies; Arena Two boasts 1,375 square metres; and Arena Three also has two more balconies as well as 2,670 square metres of space. There is also a large sand arena, two grass arenas, a restaurant, two bars, full lighting, heating and electricity as well as a PA system throughout, toilets, changing rooms and paved tarmacadam truck and car parking facilities. Car parking attendants are provided as well as the use of administration offices, meeting rooms etc. In the past, Cavan Equestrian, Horse Marketing & Event Centre has played host to concerts by the likes of Kenny Rogers, Christy Moore and Jedward as well as wedding fairs, a military vehicle show, farm machinery shows, a modified car show, an ideal home show etc. THE MOVE TO CAVAN In every conceivable way, Cavan Equestrian, Horse Marketing & Event Centre sounds like the perfect partner for Full of the Pipe – so how did the 2012 event end up being staged here? “Kevin [Mulqueen, organiser] contacted me to say they were interested in using the Centre and we took it from there,” recalls general manager Stuart Clarke. “I believe he had previously ran the event in Ennis Equestrian Centre,

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

but they then moved to Athlone IT but the bad weather hampered the show. “The great thing about our facility is that we can run the show indoors so the weather would have no effect. We have three large indoor halls and the whole show will be staged inside and that’s a huge positive for any event such as this. I think that was one of the organisers’ main considerations, but we’re also in a good location here and have plenty of experience of hosting events of this nature.” A BIG ULSTER SUPPORT PREDICTED Stuart is optimistic that Full of the Pipe 2012 has the makings of a massive success: “I’d say it’s going to be a very successful show,” he adds. “There has been a huge interest in it in the weeks and months running up to the event and there’s a big trucking fraternity in Northern Ireland who will be coming into Cavan to attend, as well as visitors from all over Ireland. I think it could develop into a good thing.” THE EQUESTRIAN SIDE Of course, horses are at the core of activity at this venue. Cavan Horse

Marketing Centre hosts approximately 25 sales per year from performance bred foals up to showjumpers plus registered Irish draught and registered Connemara pony sales. In addition to what has previously been mentioned, the superb facilities include 450 permanent stables; indoor and outdoor (allweather) arenas; and saddlery and equestrian clothing shops. Purchasers travel to Cavan Equestrian Centre from all over Ireland, the UK, Scandinavia, Belgium, Switzerland, Holland, France, the USA, etc. The Centre hosts some of the largest showjumping events in Ireland and has also been chosen by a number of societies / associations to stage their major equine events including: Northern Ireland Dressage Festival; Horse Sport Ireland Stallion Inspections; Northern Ireland Working Hunter & Showing Festival; Irish Pony Society National Championships; National Dressage C h a m p i o n s h i p s ; EquiFestival; and Cob Society “We are the busiest showjumping venue in Ireland and there are around 25 horse and pony auctions here every year,” Stuart

confirms. So when did the Centre start hosting non-equestrian type events such as concerts, shows and exhibitions? “I suppose we’ve always done it to an extent but we’ve certainly stepped it up since we expanded the Centre in 2007. We’ve held a few machinery shows already this year, in January / February, which were very successful. “Basically, we rent the facilities out to the organisers of the events held at Cavan Equestrian, Horse Marketing & Event Centre but we also provide our own expertise and knowledge of the venue to help them run it. “We’re just off the Cavan Bypass and there is convenient access and lots of space on site, including hardcore car / truck parking. “Full of the Pipe is a new venture for us and we’re looking forward to it. It should be a very good show and I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome the hauliers of Ireland to our Centre.” Okay, guys, you know the drill: Cavan Equestrian, Horse Marketing & Event Centre … be there or be square. All the small things With a major undertaking such as a truck show, it’s the little things that make the difference. The beauty is in the detail, as they say. While Full of the Pipe 2012 is naturally a truck show first and foremost, no effort has been spared in ensuring that it’s also much more than a mere truck show. Let’s take a look at some of the extras that will make June Bank Holiday weekend a weekend to remember in Cavan… Moran Signs worked on this Mick O’Hara Haulage cab

A

lot more going on than usual… There’ll be a Country & Western theme throughout the weekend this year and one of the main tasks facing the judges, who have improved categories to work within, is to find Ireland’s best Scania 143 6 x2 / 4 x 2. And new merchandising is being made available, to fit all sizes from kids to adults, as well as graphic designs for trucks. There will also be model trucks on display again. Within the spectacular confines of

Cavan Equestrian Centre, the annual Autofest (car show) is also going to be worth viewing. Then you have all the usual stands, displays, exhibits, the trucks themselves, the truckers, the food and drink, the craic. A free truck wash for those taking part… And entry is a mere €10 (free for children under ten). Could be the best value to be had anywhere this year! (And value is so damned scarce these days…) The show opens to the public from 11am on the Sunday. There’s

71

so much to do and see that literally anybody with the slightest interests in trucks or cars needs to be there. AUTOFEST As side attractions go, the Autofest sounds particularly appealing and organiser Kevin Mulqueen says it would not have been possible to make this part of the show come to pass without the input of Darren Mangan. Speaking to Irish Trucker magazine in the run-up to the June Bank Holiday Full of the Pipe extravaganza at Cavan Equestrian Centre, Kevin stated: “The Autofest has been put together by Darren and he puts an unbelievable amount of work into this, between putting up fliers and posters etc. This is something Darren really likes and he approaches it with great enthusiasm. This part of the show would simply not be possible without his input. “The Autofest car show has been part of Full of the Pipe since day one. It’s something extra for the paying public and I suppose in particular for the younger generation to see. Darren and his father John have helped us out with producing fliers etc. and we owe them a big debt of gratitude for their help down through the years.” Kevin is keen to stress that Autofest has nothing to do with boy racers. It’s a little more sophisticated than that! “There

The Kiernan Transport cab prepared by Moran Signs, one of the sponsors of the show

72

will be a nice selection of performance cars and modified cars on display. This isn’t boy racer stuff. We’ll be exhibiting a very high standard of car and this is an important side attraction that we like to bring in every year so that there is more for everybody to see and do over the course of the weekend.” How many cars does Kevin expect to see at the indoor venue in Cavan for Full of the Pipe 2012? “There will be anywhere between 30 and 50 cars on show. We get great support from Keith Stewart at Celica Ireland and also from Alex Kenny in e36 Club [BMW series]. So we’ll have a good selection of quality vehicles. While this is something we like to include, I’d also like to point out that Full of the Pipe is evolving more and more into becoming a 100% truck show.” MERCHANDISE On the merchandising front, the 2012 event also represents a historic departure as the organisers are starting to take the actual branding of the truck show more seriously, with a new range of merchandise to be unveiled at the Cavan show: “This year we are launching a range of merchandise to suit both adults and kids,” Kevin confirms. “This merchandise can be purchased at the show and it offers fans of the show a chance to show their support of Full of the Pipe. We’ll be selling custom clothing and

people will be able to pick up official Full of the Pipe t-shirts and stuff like that. The idea is to get the name out there and to try to keep the show in the spotlight. “As part of this, we will also have a graphics service available to truckers, who will be able to get Full of the Pipe logos etc. put onto their truck windows on site on the day. “Another thing is the truck model show, which will be held in the main reception area.” TEAM EFFORT Kevin reiterates his appreciation of the work done by Darren Mangan, commenting: “For Colin Hegarty and myself, we are both delighted that Darren has been involved and he plays a big part in this with the fliers, poster, leaflets and website. That help has been absolutely vital to us. “I’d also like to thank everybody else who has supported the car side of

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

things, getting it up and running, but at the same time I have to stress once more that this is a truck show at the end of the day. “Colin and myself put everything into this. We will be there to help people at the trade stands on the day but if people want to sell their merchandise they must also support the show. It works both ways and people have to support Full of the Pipe. If these shows die, then there will be no stands and the public won’t buy any of the merchandise. We offer very reasonable rates and we have great support from our sponsors, which is also very much appreciated.” Hosting the show in Cavan Equestrian Centre represents another landmark departure for the organisers and Kevin says he is very encouraged by the potential of the new venue: “I’m delighted with the venue. I’m expecting a very positive response now that people know we’re going to have an

indoor show, with 12,000 sq metres of space, a Country & Western theme, music and a bar and restaurant. “There’s no need to register in advance. Registrations will be taken on the Saturday from 2pm until midnight and will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. I’d advise people to show up in time to avoid disappointment, however, as the response has been brilliant so far and we’re expecting it to be a sell-out. “We’re promoting the show all around Ireland and the judging this year is going to be very good with extended and improved categories. At the end of the day, the whole show revolves around getting that trophy up on the dash. There’s great comfort for the drivers and the judges this year and there will be no restrictions caused by rain or bad weather as we are indoors in an exceptional, high-class venue.” Couldn’t ask for much more, in all fairness.

I

t took a brave decision for the Galway native to set up any sort of business never mind one in the haulage industry, but Sean had the confidence to do so and he admits to Irish Trucker that it was the right decision. Sean had many years experience in the industry, having being involved with trucks most of his adult life. Indeed when he spent some time in Canada, he learned his trade as an ice road trucker, a job that has been made so famous that it has its on show on Sky television. “I worked on the ice roads for about a year and a half when I was over there. It was a great experience and was like nothing I had experienced before,” said Sean. “Before I left I had acquired a lot of contacts in the industry, so when I came back I knew that I could gain some work, so I set up Direct Transport Galway three years ago now.” Direct Transport Galway is a Direct Transport Galway west coast based courier was set up three years ago company that specialise in IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Direct Transport is also part of Pallet Express and is the main operator for the west of Ireland. “The Pallet Express is a great source of work and it provides a reliable and efficient service to a large customer base across the country. “Every member of the network runs a very professional set-up, so there are never any complaints and I'm delighted to be involved.” Sean operates one artic, four rigids and a number of vans in order to ensure that regardless of the size of the cargo, they can facilitate all their customers “At Direct Transport Galway we have a fleet of vehicles and an extensive transportation network to service same day, next day, timed and standard deliveries nationally, within the UK and to Europe. “We offer competitive pricing for all types of deliveries, whether it is rush, next-day, same-day or route work. For many of your urgent parcels, a next day service will be just what you need. However, deadlines, clients, or sometimes just the parcel's importance or value will require a same day delivery.” Situated in their premise at Glenascaul Industrial Park in Oranmore, Co Galway, Sean and his team of six employees have worked

hard to build the business and he is pleased with the direction the company is heading. “I can't really complain as the business has grown on an annual basis. We moved to the business park a year ago as we required larger premises to accommodate our expanding fleet and the level of work that we are providing.” Sean revealed that he employs his own mechanic to look after the fleet as he feels that this is one way of cutting down on the many overheads connected with the industry. “We do all our own maintenance and we ensure that the vehicles are well maintained in order to avoid down time, which is an area we never have too much problems with, thankfully. “There are many overheads to contend with in the industry, but like everyone else, I think fuel prices are the biggest problem at the moment. “Last year I had 12 vehicles on the road, but I was forced to cut back on the fleet as the rising cost of diesel meant that it was not financially viable to run so many trucks. “I do believe I made the right decision by cutting back as if I didn't then I'm not sure if we would have been able to survive, it's as simple as that.” Sean pointed to customer satisfaction as the key to a successful business,

something that Direct Transport Galway prides itself on. “We do the job to 100% of our capabilities. The drivers I have here are very competent and make sure that the customer receives their package on time, every time. Overall, Sean feels that the industry has settled slightly, although he admits every assessment must be made with the greatest of care. “We are getting bigger all the time and if we can keep that level of growth going then I'll be very happy. It is a very volatile industry and every decision has to be made with the utmost consideration.”

Another trailer ready for the forestry industry

Timber! Specialised tools and machinery are needed to work in the forestry industry and sourcing these can be a problem for some customers.

H

owever, Portarlington based Robinson Distributions Ltd can cater for all your needs as they have ten years experience in business, while many more working hands on in the forestry industry. For this month's edition of Irish Trucker, we profile the Laois based firm and speak to managing director Scott Robinson about the services that they provide. Scott and his brother Ross established the business in 2002 having had previous experience working in the industry and during the intervening years, they have built up a large customer base, many of who are repeat customers now. The company was established to supply an efficient repair and maintenance service for timber harvesting and log handling equipment. Also in 2002, Robinson Distribution secured the Loglift and Alucar agencies. Having a background in the forestry industry means that Robinson Distribution has an understanding of the customer needs and if they haven't the product that someone seeks at their premises, they will source them very quickly. In 2004 they were appointed the official Ponsee distributors for Ireland. That same year, the first Robinson Trailers were

manufactured. In recent years they have also secured agencies for Neuson, Iggesund, Kesla and Oregon and continue to develop and enhance their service and support to the forestry industry. Supplying a top range of brands also gives the customer the peace of mind in the knowledge that they are purchasing a quality product and always at competitive prices. Located at Portnahinch, Portarlington, Robinsons are situated in a county that has a long tradition in timber harvesting, haulage and sawmilling. Scott and Ross' father Alan has worked most of his life in timber harvesting equipment and it was no surprise when his two sons followed suit. “We were working with timber from when we were at school and it's in our blood so to speak,” admitted Scott. “The experience that we have gathered over the years gives us a great knowledge of the industry and helps us understand what the customer needs.” Robinson Distribution provides an extensive product range and this includes Robinson Trailers, Ponsee, Loglift, Alucar, Neuson Ecotec, Kesla, Junkkari, Bars & Chains, Oregon, Pre IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Owned, Titan Lubricants and Titan Firewood Machines. “We have a large product range, all of which are top brands. With Robinson Trailers, we manufacture our own trailers for the forestry industry and provide a large selection that can be produced to the customers' specifications. We produce a high quality trailer and even though this is a very competitive market, we are pleased with the workload that we have. “When we decided to manufacture trailers feedback was very positive and provided us with the incentive necessary to invest further resources and develop the Robinson Trailer brand. The rest, as they say, is history, as we have now successfully manufactured a large number of quality trailers. The Robinson Trailer range is always expanding to keep up with our customers' needs and to attract new customers. A combination of high quality, competitive price and listening to our customers, have been key contributors to steady growth of the Robinson Trailer brand. “We manufacture flats, semitrailers, tippers and turn table trailers to a high specification as The company was founded ten years ago well as producing skip trailers IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

and roll on/roll off trailers. Robinson are now very happy and excited to announce that they will now be manufacturing and supplying sliding container trailers, the decision has been made after many call to their office with people requesting quotations and specifications on such trailers after seeing their timber trailers on the road.

Robinson Distribution can meet all your trailer needs

“We also manufacture our own type of log splitter and have two types on offer. Before we started production we compiled a list of features requested. The machine had to be well built, powerful, safe, easy to use and cost effective. It would also need to be capable of performing well when powered from

tractor hydraulics. We then produced a proto-type which was rigorously tested. Following a number of changes to that initial design, the now popular Titan 12+ Splitter went into production.”(Take all of this out as it not important to our business) With the ongoing expansion of a wood fuel market here, Robinson Distribution is also developing and supplying woodchip delivery systems and boilers, suitable for large scale end users and contractors in this sector. “This is an area that we have developed in recent years and it has been going fairly well with a lot of interest being shown. They are used mostly in the industrial sector.” Given the current economic climate, Scott revealed that their second hand trade has improved considerably. “We would be selling a lot of used equipment, all of which is serviced and working perfectly. In the current market, money is not as available as it was before, but in saying that it has not really affected us. “With a good team of experienced team on board Scott admitted that without their hard work, the success of the business would not have been achieved to the level it has found itself. All our employees are highly trained regardless of what area they work in. Many of them have been with us from the start and they are very reliable and hard working.”

The Flaherty name continues through the generations with Pat’s sons Pat and Derek

Quality service/prime location/competitive rates PD Flaherty Transport, Storage & Logistics Ltd. is a stellar family business that’s been going strong for 30 years, providing an exceptional nationwide container delivery / collection service, including hazardous consignments. Irish Trucker dropped into the well-appointed, strategically-located base at Kilshane, Dublin 11 and had a chat with company director Pat Flaherty.

P

D Flaherty ticks all the boxes. Offering a wide range of services at competitive rates, the company also boasts decades of experience and expertise as well as holding waste permits for every county in Ireland. The location – at Kilshane, on the N2 and within minutes of the M50 and Port Tunnel – is ideal and storage facilities are located on-site (including storage for containers). There are state-of-the-art unloading / loading facilities in the yard, comprising all the latest specialist equipment and personnel for the most awkward loads. The dedicated fleet of 20 articulated lorries and 60 trailers (including curtainsiders) is all company-owned, with no work subcontracted. Drivers and vehicles are available for contract work at agreed daily / weekly rates and the team at PD Flaherty Transport, Storage & Logistics is always prepared to work out a good deal on any contract or job, with space available at reasonable rates on their vehicles travelling daily between Dublin and the rest of the country. The company has really gone from strength to strength since €1.6m was invested in the new yard at Peachville Lodge, Kilshane six years ago. The location is ideal in every way, as Pat Flaherty confirms: “We are in a very good location. Most of our work goes through Dublin Port and we are only twelve minutes away. “Nationwide container work is at the core of the business, with 16 of our 20 lorries doing that and the other four working on international work.” The family business was established by Pat’s late father Paddy Flaherty and is now overseen by his two sons Pat and Derek (thus PD). As well as being co-directors, the two main men behind the business also operate in a hands-on fashion – Pat is out on the road every day and Derek helps look after the trucks and trailers in the yard. In turn, Pat’s own three sons – Paddy, Jason and Andre – are all working as drivers. “We also have Larry Hilliard as transport / operations manager and he keeps the show on the road, while Natalie Canavan and Andre also work in operations,” Pat notes. In terms of consignments, PD Flaherty Transport, Storage & Logistics Ltd. is a general haulage operator with the capacity to transport all kinds of loads, including hazardous materials. Apart from two Volvos, the The company is fleet comprises exclusively of based in Kilshane IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Scanias. Pat is a big fan of their reliability and says that this is vital in the current climate with fuel costs at such an outrageous level. The majority of the fleet comprises ’04 – ’06 regs, with a few ‘08s also thrown into the mix. These are all meticulously maintained in immaculate condition and optimum running order. “They are all well-maintained here in our own workshop, where we have two fully-qualified mechanics working full time, making sure they remain in top nick. We also have parking facilities here, which we make available to other truckers.” In addition to the comprehensive fleet, there is also a range of lifting / handling equipment in the yard and all the materials necessary to provide a thoroughly-dependable storage solution. Pat is glad to point out that in general the company is performing fairly well at the moment – not a bad situation to be in considering the economic times that are in it: “We are paying our way and keeping our heads above the water, which is all you can ask for at the moment. Times are tough right across the industry but we have some good customers who have stood by us. We’ve provided them with a great service down through the years and they are rewarding us with their loyalty. “We’re lucky to have good relations with the likes of Keuhne & Nagel, DFDS, Blue Water, IPS and JB International as well as Greenstar, AES and Thorntons in the recycling end of things. We are delighted to have done business with them over the years and would like to thank them for their support. “In this business, service is everything. That’s what it’s all about at the end of the day. We have a very good working relationship with all our customers and we always give them a personal, honest service. At the moment, we’re working all over Ireland, with a lot of city work included.” Looking to the future, Pat concludes: “We’re going to keep going, providing a good service and we’ll hope for the best. Nobody knows what’s around the corner. The price of fuel is a massive factor now and it’s the same for every haulier – it’s putting us under a lot of pressure. You can only give so much for so little before something has to give. It’s getting more difficult to price work these days. Margins have become very tight and you have no room to manoeuvre. “The way things are, you’d be happy just to make a modest

GKTM continue to deliver Gary Keville Traffic Management Ltd has continued to deliver a reliable and efficient service, while their customer base has increased on a yearly basis.

G

KTM has been operating now for four years and the need for traffic management on Irish roads has grown in recent years. Operations Director Barry Bessant speaks to Irish Trucker about the continued growth of the company. GKTM Ltd and sister company Gary Keville Transport are situated on a four acre site at South Bank road, Ringsend near the centre of Dublin's docklands and close to all major motorways. The services provided are impressive to say the least with an array of areas covered that include traffic management consultancy, traffic management design and planning, TM installations and systems; single and multi lane closures; road closures and detours, manual stop/go operations; temporary traffic light set ups, convoy systems; crossovers and contra flows to name just a few. Barry revealed that the company has grown considerably since being established only a few years ago and that they already involved in a number of projects, such as; expanding to include small civil engineering works to their port folio. “We have made steady progress and last year we were very busy indeed, which we were delighted about and hopefully we

90

can build on that this year. We won't really know how busy we will be until the councils release their budgets, which is generally around June,” said Barry. The Operations Director revealed that the level of services provided by the company is second to none. “We offer a complete service in that we will look after the design of the traffic management plan, supply the products and erect them. The work that we have been involved in to date has seen us develop a large customer base. “GKTM can provide a vast array of traffic related services for start to finish applications. These are the tools you need to get the job done. We are a service company with a complete menu of quality traffic control devices/systems and a mission of attaining 100% customer satisfaction. “Obviously, we are primarily involved with road projects, but that is only part of what we do. When councils are cutting grass, we can supply the labour, plant, equipment and training for the operatives. Similarly with the transportation of abnormal loads, we can plan the route, liaise with all the relevant authorities, obtain permits (where required), provide escort vehicles and of course any temporary traffic management systems to facilitate the safe movement of the IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

load.” Health and Safety has become a major issue on Irish roads and Barry stressed that this was a key area that GKTM concentrate on with the emphasis being not just on the safety of motorists, but on the workforce and pedestrians alike. “We comply with all health, safety and regulations that are in place and take into great consideration the safety of the people involved. Our policy 'Let's all go home safe after our work is done' includes the people that are working on the roads, general road users and members of the public.” Road works can be the source of most motorists anxieties, even though the work being IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

done is to benefit them. However, not many see it that way and Barry revealed that frustration can sometimes boil over. “We had an employee punched recently just for doing his job, whilst others have also been threatened with being shot, which is unacceptable. This job is not for everyone as the abuse that some of the workers receive is unwarranted. “I'd urge motorists to be more patient and understanding as the work being carried out is for their benefit. We are committed to minimising the disruption of traffic flow and pedestrian routes that may result from our client's activities whilst maintaining the highest levels of safety at all times. “We can achieve this by promoting innovative solutions to age old problems and continually striving to develop new ideas that will enhance safety and their public image. “GKTM can design and produce traffic management drawings for short or long term schemes. Whether it is a simple lane closure or a multiphase crossover scheme our TM plans will ensure safety and efficiency for site personnel, motorists and the general public. Barry is confident that 2012 will be a big year for the company and he feels that as their reputation grows so too will the amount of projects GKTM will be involved in. “I've no doubt that this year will be a fantastic year for the company. We are improving our service all the time and I'm confident that with the quality of service that we provide, there will be no problems.” GKTM has a new Training Centre on its four-acre site on South Bank Road, Ringsend. It is ideally situated for all Dockland companies and with easy access for companies further afield. “The Training Centre aims to provide a wide range of courses for companies looking to provide their staff with skills in the traffic management and construction industries. An example of some of the courses available are; Signing, Lighting & Guarding at Roadworks (SLG 3 day course), Health & Safety at Roadworks (1 day course) and a variety of CSCS Cards for Dump Truck Operatives, Excavator Operatives, Telescopic Handlers, Dozer Operatives and Mobile Crane Oeratives, plus many, many more. With new courses being added all the time the portfolio is expanding rapidly.” GKTM are experts in traffic management
