BDA strengthens European division

Things are really taking off for time critical logistics provider BDA (Bespoke Distribution Aviation), which has started 2014 with a new European Managing Director, as part of a focus on its wider international distribution service. The company, based at Coventry Airport in the UK, with strong links in Ireland, is going through an extended period of growth, which has seen it significantly expand its in night Air and Road operations divisions with increased levels of distribution business over the past six months. Spearheading the company’s growth strategy throughout 2014 is newly appointed European Managing Director Kevin Turner who brings 25 years’ experience in the Same Day and Next Day delivery markets. Kevin’s expertise in European Air and Road express services and Warehousing Solutions will strengthen BDA’s team to grow its international presence over the next 12 months. BDA already operates an extensive end-to end supply chain network, with airport based hubs throughout the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe, Kevin Turner accommodating pan-European time-critical deliveries daily. Kevin Turner has been appointed to the company’s Maastricht Air-Hub in The Netherlands, to further grow the company’s overseas market presence and continue to deliver market leading customer supply chain solutions. With a lifetime of experience, having previously worked in European and UK distribution, logistics warehousing and air freight, Kevin will lead BDA’s strategy for increased growth and market share across European and International markets. Kevin Turner said, “BDA has a great structure in place to allow it to grow its capacity throughout its UK, Ireland and European divisions. The company’s service offering is unique and tailored to every customer and this is why it is an international market leader for bespoke distribution services and supply chain solutions. The company has plans to increase its market presence further and I am excited to become an integral part of this.” The new appointment comes at an exciting time for the company, which has achieved unprecedented levels of growth not just with the acquisition of German Airline and In-night freight specialist NightExpress last year, but also by moving into new markets, after recently beginning work in the B2C sector with an established e-commerce client. BDA operates nightly cargo flights complemented by daily road express linehaul routes, between its Coventry hub, Dublin, and Frankfurt in Germany. The five nights a week flights give customers a guaranteed overnight and early morning delivery for time-critical cargo working with sectors typically in then hi-tech IT and printing, medical equipment, materials handling equipment, agricultural machinery and automotive industries, and more recently for direct selling e-commerce businesses. Steve Court, sales director at BDA said, “Last year was a fantastic year, during which we further established our infrastructure and platform for growth, and we are looking forward to continued growth and success in 2014. He continued: “We’re growing all the time and with Kevin heading up our European division, we will continue to offer an unrivalled service throughout Europe and add value to the supply chain markets. We are prepared for a very exciting year ahead.”

Motor manufacture creates 100 jobs in NI

One hundred jobs are to be created by Japanese-owned Ryobi Aluminium Casting (UK), at their plant in Carrickfergus, Co Antrim. The company is investing in new machinery to enable it to expand its product range. The expansion brings the number of people employed at the Carrickfergus plant to 386. Forty of the 100 jobs announced by the company have already been filled. The investment is being supported by Invest Northern Ireland, which has offered more than £2m of assistance, part funded by the European Regional Development Fund. First Minister Peter Robinson said: "Today's announcement reinforces the growing global appeal that we have as a great place in which to invest and to grow your business. "We met with chairman Hiroshi Urakami and president Akira Urakami in December as part of our business mission to Japan, to discuss this project. "I welcome this opportunity to thank Ryobi for its further investment in Northern Ireland and to assure the company of our continued support."

Volvo to slash jobs

Volvo says it will lay off 4,400 employees in 2014, including a previously-announced workforce reduction of 2,000. The vehicle manufacturer has revealed that its profits fell by 37% in the fourth quarter of last year. Chief executive Olof Persson released a statement saying that the job cuts will affect employees worldwide. He added that the cuts will help Volvo utilise its resources more effectively and are a consequence of the transformation the company is currently undergoing. Volvo’s fourth-quarter net profit fell by 37% from 869 million kronor to 548 million kronor. Sales for the period rose by 8% to 76.6 billion kronor, from 70.8 billion. 2014 off to a flyer for Mercedes-Benz Commercials

It has been a positive start to the year for Mercedes-Benz commercials with a number of truck and van deliveries in the month of January. Tesco has strengthened its fleet with the addition of eight new Mercedes-Benz Axor 1824 units for distributing dry and chilled foods to Tesco Express stores in Dublin and surrounding areas where an articulated truck cannot gain access. Wicklow firm, King Tree Services, who specialise in the care and maintenance of trees, has taken delivery of a unique Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz Atego 1318 4x4 for King Tree Services

Mercedes-Benz Axor 1824 for Tesco

Atego 1318 4x4 with a body specially built by Timmons Engineering of Camolin. Van deliveries include Bord Bia multi-award winning family operated nursery, Rentes Plants in Kildare who have received the first new Euro 6 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 519 van complete with a specialised box body built by McCleans of Kingswood and a Dhollandia tail lift supplied by Ballinlough. All vehicles were supplied by MUTEC.

Driving hours must be accounted for

Failure to understand the requirements of digital tachograph reporting could lead to hauliers losing their licences, officials have stated. That's the warning from Nick Denton, traffic commissioner for London and the South East, after he suspended a scaffolding firm for three weeks for "serious and prolonged drivers' hours shortcomings". DVSA (formerly VOSA) examiners reported Park Lane Scaffolding – and its drivers – for various infringements, including failing to obtain a company tachograph card and digital download equipment several months after buying a vehicle with a digital tachograph. "It is simply not acceptable for operators to purchase vehicles fitted with digital tachographs and then run them without bothering to find out what the legal requirements relating to digital tachographs are," said the commissioner. "The legal requirements are not a state secret – they are clearly set out on the government website, and trade bodies such as the RHA and FTA, as well as the trade press, are constantly issuing advice." He added: "Too many operators seem to be content to get their advice on digital tachographs from a bloke down the pub, rather than DVSA [formerly VOSA] or a trade body."

Truck sales fall

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders have revealed that the heavy commercial vehicle market fell 39 per cent in January. The introduction of Euro 6 emissions rules is believed to be the main reason for the decline in truck sales. A total of 1,460 trucks were registered in January 2014 compared with 2,397 in January last year. The fall was expected as operators completed their fleet purchases ahead of the E6 legislation. The market from trucks over six tonnes was up 237 per cent in December compared to a year earlier. Most manufacturers reported big drops in registrations in January. The exception was Renault which saw a 143 per cent increase with 316 registrations. This was enough to give it market leadership for the month. Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said: "As expected, the pre-Euro-6 rush at the end of last year dented truck volumes in January – a market factor we expect to continue for some months. Looking ahead, SMMT is confident that van registrations will continue to grow at a sustainable rate, while truck demand should level out over the full year."

New RHA director appointed to Northern Ireland

The Road Haulage Association has appointed Martin Reid as director for Scotland and Northern Ireland. Reid takes over the role from Phil Flanders who retired from the position late last year. "Martin will be a real asset to the RHA in Scotland and Northern Ireland. He welcomes the challenge of ensuring that the voice of the membership is heard in the corridors of power, and as such is given the best opportunity to prosper in the market place," said RHA acting chief executive, Nick Payne. Reid joins RHA from SELECT, a trade association for the electrical industry in Scotland, where he was responsible for some 1,250 member companies of various sizes. Geraldine Quinn has also been appointed area manager for Northern Ireland at the association, in a bid to increase support and commitment to its members in the area.

Storms and floods place unexpected demand on plant sector - says McHale Plant Sales

The impact that recent winds and severe flooding have had in many parts of Ireland, not least amongst coastal communities whose sea defenses have been severely damaged by high winds and heavy seas, will place an unexpected demand on plant and equipment contractors and providers, according to Komatsu distributor in Ireland, McHale Plant Sales. In the months and years ahead, flood protection will Komatsu - PC240 Long become a major area of activity, as local authorities and Reach Excavator communities strive to protect themselves against an expected reoccurrence of scenes that have become all too familiar in recent times, the company believes. One particular aspect requiring the use of specialised equipment will result from the public call for deeper dredging of rivers. In such applications, the requirement will be for excavators with long reach booms and water discharge buckets. For the information of the various state agencies and local authorities involved, and in order to facilitate the fastest possible response, McHale Plant Sales is compiling a register of contractors resourced with the machinery required to carry out such work.

UK set for major roads building projects

The U.K are about to embark on its biggest road development investment since the 1970s. Their is expected to be in the region of £24 billion invested in road projects over the coming year, which will create thousands of jobs in the sector. The government is tripling funding on the road network over the next eight years with more than £24 billion to be spent on upgrading and improving the network until 2021. Speaking at the Institution of civil engineers, roads minister Robert Goodwill said: “Funding certainty is critical to the construction industry in planning for the future and that is exactly what the government has delivered – with £24 billion secure investment over six years and £50 billion for the strategic road network over the next 15 years. "However, we need to make sure everyone is ready to deliver the massive programme of investment that we need to keep Britain’s roads moving. “To do that, we need to make sure we have the right people and equipment in place to deliver the 53 road schemes in preparation right now, plus the next generation of improvements over the next seven years. "This means taking on more apprentices and making sure suppliers have the capacity to deal with the increase in demand. "If we get this right, this will provide road users with a high performing network that can cope with the expected 43% increase in traffic over the coming decades that will help boost economy growth and deliver more efficient roads for motorists.”

First motorway pub opened in UK

The first motorway pub has been opened in the U.K, despite the concerns of the Road Haulage Association. The pub is the first off its kind and was opened last week at the Beaconsfield service area, at junction 2 of the M40. However, the RHA have stressed that drink driving should not be encouraged and that is what this facility is promoting. “The difference between the service area at Beaconsfield and the majority of the others located throughout the UK motorway network is that the driver has to leave the environs of the motorway to gain access," explained RHA spokesperson, Kate Gibbs. "On that basis, the argument would surely be that if a driver is determined to drink while being responsible for their vehicle, they will do so. “Motorways can be dangerous, they have always operated successfully without the need of an ‘alcohol outlet’, so why change that?" said Gibbs. "Service areas exist primarily to provide a place where tired drivers can stop safely to take a rest – not a pint." IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Road repairs funding cut by 17%

Northern Ireland roads receive £20 million

JMC Van Trans in the driving seat with €350,000 investment programme

600 jobs to be created at port

The €332 million set aside for local authorities to maintain the roads throughout the year is 17% less than the county and city councils received last year. The funding will be used to maintain 1,900kms of road, to upgrade another 2,156 kms to be strengthened and complete 245 low-cost safety projects, while the majority of the funding will be used to repair damage caused by the winter storms all over the country. “The focus on road maintenance and repair comes against a backdrop of ongoing limited resources and an overall cut of 17pc this year on the 2013 funding,” said Transport Minister Leo Varadkar. “As a consequence, new schemes focused on improvement rather than maintenance will be curtailed for 2014. Our priority is to maintain the existing road network, and unfortunately there is little scope for carrying out new road improvement projects.”

Calor, Ireland’s leading distributor of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) has announced a partnership with JMC Van Trans, one of the country’s largest nationwide overnight Groupage operations, that is set to advance energy efficiency and reduce overall fuel costs for their operations. The programme will see Calor supply LPG for JMC Van Trans forklift truck operations at their operations and distribution hub on the Naas Road. This partnership with Calor forms part of a longterm strategic investment programme by the company, which has seen JMC Van Trans purchase an additional ten new LPG 2.5 tonne forklift trucks, to bring the total number supporting operations to fourteen at a cost of €350,000. The investment in LPG powered forklifts with fuel supply by Calor will provide new levels of energy efficiency, a decrease in fuel costs and a reduction in operational costs for JMC Van Trans. Calor have designed and implemented a specific infrastructure offering which involved the installation on site at the Naas Road HQ of a bulk tank and skid unit, from which cylinders can be refilled for fuel to power the JMC forklift truck fleet. The dedicated telemetry system provides electronically monitors LPG levels, alerting Calor when fuel needs to be replenished, ensuring security of supply and no impact to operational capacity. Commenting on the announcement, Garrett Murphy, Joint Managing Director, JMC Van Trans, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Calor in this strategic investment deal. For a business such as JMC Van Trans, which operates on a 24 hour basis and a commitment to our clients of next day delivery, continuity of supply is essential. Our main decision when choosing our fuel supplier was security of supply during peak times, we have this with Calor. He continued: “Since switching all of our forklift fleet to LPG, we have seen a direct benefit to our bottom line, with our fuel costs seeing a reduction of 20%. This has allowed us to provide a more integrated and flexible service for our customers, while helping us further reduce operational costs”. Larry Smith, Area Sales Representative, Calor, said: “The partnership with Calor will make a real difference for JMC Van Trans as it sets out to expand its business and service offering to its customers. Calor are listening to the needs and requirements of our customers across a wide range of sectors, and have developed tailored and complete business solutions for companies such as JMC. The LPG solution is the most cost effective option in the long run, is ideal in sensitive environments, and can truly enable businesses to transform their infrastructure to become more agile and delivering savings in operating costs.”

Northern Ireland Transport Minister Danny Kennedy has revealed that there will be £20 million set aside for the maintenance of the road network in Northern Ireland. The funding is part of the January monitoring group and Kennedy stated that it is necessary to receive significant investment in order to carry out the maintenance work. “This additional funding will target structural maintenance on the local road network to help address the significant backlog and reduce the actual resurfacing cycles. It will also provide new drainage, some reconstruction and the resurfacing of around 160 kilometres of road," he said. "Carrying out road improvements sustains hundreds of jobs every year and ensures the travelling public enjoy safer and more enjoyable journeys," he concluded.

The Port of Dover’s Western Docks will have a new logistics hub built and this will create 600 jobs. The major re-development project could also safeguard 140 posts through the construction of a new cargo terminal. The project is designed to ensure that the Port has "the essential infrastructure in place to serve its customers in the years ahead with the additional opportunity to increase ferry berth capacity in the Eastern Docks through the transfer of the cargo operation to the west," the Dover Harbour Board said. Port of Dover chief executive, Tim Waggott, said that the re-development project focused on creating a logistics hub which would attract cargo shippers, shipping lines and supply chain partners to Dover. "Dover has growing traffic in ocean freight shipping, in particular in perishables and is currently served by three vessels weekly. There is considerable potential for this business to be expanded and having first-class handling capabilities in the logistics hub would facilitate its development. The hub would provide important spin-offs for our cross-Channel trade activities too."

Fuel costs need to be addresses says transport group

This year must see fuel costs addressed, according to research carried out amongst Pall-Ex members. All respondents of the survey bar one stressed that fuel costs must take priority this year or otherwise businesses within the industry would suffer even further. “Transport is the foundation of a strong infrastructure. Whether personal journeys or commercial haulage, road transport leads to more money spent elsewhere in the economy," said chief executive officer of Pall-Ex, Hilary Devey. "If the costs of products and services are reduced as a result of cheaper transport, the economic benefits are enhanced. Meanwhile, if those transport businesses that are in a tight spot now were given a break by way of a reduction in fuel costs, then their survival and the employment of their workers is good news for both the national and regional economies, and the logistics sector as a whole. So why must we all pay such extortionate amounts?” IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Ireland is third mostexpensive state in Euro zone

A report has shown that Ireland is the third most-expensive nation for goods and services in the Euro zone. According to the report by Forfás, Ireland ranks third dearest of the 18 Euro zone countries. The State agency's unpublished report recently went to Cabinet and the Government will be expected to act on some of its recommendations in the coming months. The study takes in the recession years from 2008 to 2012 and compares prices in Ireland to those in other countries in the Euro zone. Ireland had been the most expensive place to buy goods and services up to that point, but has now dropped two places to third spot. Even though costs have dropped, people in Ireland still pay - on average - almost 14% more than their European counterparts for goods and services. The cost of education rose by almost 6%, while Irish people pay almost 35% more for health care. The cost of public transport rose 5% in Ireland during the recession – compared to 3.5% in other Euro Zone areas. Ireland has the most expensive alcohol and tobacco in the Euro zone.

January vehicle sales up 33% as full year market set to hit 100K

A buoyant January market has put Ireland firmly on course for 100,000 new car and commercial vehicle sales in 2014, according to figures released by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI). The combined new vehicle market for January 2014 was 26,078 units, with the car market up by 33 percent on last year and the commercial sector up by 40 percent. A total of 22,913 new cars were registered in January while 3,165 new commercial vehicles were sold. In a very tight market where only 320 units separate the top three brands, Ford is the only manufacturer to have two models – Focus and Fiesta – in the top 5 selling cars. In addition, the Ford Transit was the best-selling commercial vehicle range. With sales of 603 units, Ford was the overall CV market leader for January – a feat the company has achieved for 24 of the last 25 years Growth in commercial vehicle sales – ahead of VW (522 units) and Renault (259 units). Ford saw its combined vehicle volume (cars and CVs) grow by 27 percent during the month.

“This is the first time in a number of years that we’ve had such a strong start to the year and an outlook for the year in the region of 100,000 vehicle sales,” said Ford Ireland chief Eddie Murphy. “The car industry has gone through a lot of pain but I think we can be cautiously optimistic that a corner has now been turned. “We always say the commercial vehicle market is a good indicator of how the wider business sector is performing, so in that context an increase in sales of 40% tells a very positive story,” Mr Murphy went on. “Businesses, especially SMEs, are investing in their fleets and that’s a great sign. “January was a good month for Ford with Focus, Fiesta and Transit all performing strongly for us, now we have to push on for the remainder of the year,” he added. The top selling cars in January 2014 were: 1. VW Golf 2. Toyota Corolla 3. Ford Focus 4. Hyundai IX35 5. Ford Fiesta

Manufacturing remains on the up

January saw manufacturing activity increase for the eighth consecutive month – but the rate of growth recorded was slower than in December. According to Investec's Purchasing Manager's Index, manufacturing activity dropped to 52.8 in January from 53.5 in December, with any figure above 50 representing expansion. "Although production growth slowed in January, new orders remained relatively robust, with improved demand reported from both domestic and export customers. Once again, the UK market was highlighted as a source of particular strength," said Investec Ireland's chief economist Philip O'Sullivan. "Today's report represents a solid, if unspectacular, start to 2014 for the manufacturing sector. Broadly speaking, with activity having grown in every month since June 2013, the underlying trend remains intact.” In December, employment grew across all three groups of manufacturing, i.e investment, intermediate and consumer goods. Unemployment in Ireland has now fallen to 12.4% - from a 15% high in 2012. IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Driver Distractions: 10 percent of Motorists in Accident ‘Near Miss’ Due to Text Messaging Women are worst offenders - more likely than men to use phone behind the wheel

Sending or reading mobile phone texts has been identified as the most common dangerously distracting activity for drivers on Ireland's roads. In a survey of Irish drivers carried out by Continental Tyres, mobile phone texting was cited by just over 10 percent of drivers as the number one activity that has caused the most 'near misses' on the road. Other distracting activities that almost caused an accident included changing / searching for music (8 percent) and taking or making a phone call (7 percent). Interestingly, as the smartphone becomes more and more popular, just over 5 percent of drivers highlighted checking email or the internet as a reason for a near miss in the past. The search for the right music was highlighted as the most common distracting activity by respondents - 73 percent said this was the most regular distracting activity they engaged in while behind the wheel. This was followed by mobile phone use - calling and / or texting (65 percent) and eating / drinking (44 percent). Women were identified as more likely to be distracted by using the mobile phone - nearly 48 percent of women said phone usage is their main distracting activity behind the wheel (33 percent of men). For men, eating / drinking and searching for music were the joint most distracting activities. However, twice as many women cited smoking / lighting cigarettes as a regular distraction (14 percent versus 7 percent for men) when driving. Tom Dennigan from Continental Tyres Ireland, said: "As a driver, paying attention to your surroundings is vital to ensure both your safety and the safety of other road users. In spite of all the safety campaigns targeting the dangers of mobile phone usage while driving, it was shocking to see it highlighted as the main reason for a 'near miss' by so many drivers. We would reiterate the Road Safety Authority message to drivers, it won't hurt you to put away the phone while you are behind the wheel, but using it just might". In response to the question in relation to distractions from passengers or other road users, cyclists were found to be the biggest distraction for drivers (60 per cent), followed by children in the car (37 per cent) and pedestrians (nearly 40 percent). Other motorists were highlighted by one in four of respondents as key sources of distraction.

Bord Bia release export figures

Irish food and drink exports reached the €10 billion mark in 2013, according to figures released by Bord Bia. The staggering figure shows that the country is certainly booming in this area and well on its way to a recovery over the course of the next few years. There was an increase of 9% on the previous year, while over the past four years the increase has been as much as 40%. “Significant growth in 2013 has brought export values in the Irish Food and Drink sector to record levels," said Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney. The UK remains the largest export destination for Irish food and drink with 42pc of exports worth an estimated €4.1bn reaching that market in 2013. Exports of food and drink to other EU markets increased by 11pc in 2013 reaching €3.2bn with the key markets of Germany, France and the Netherlands all recording double digit growth.

The Road Safety Authority have launched a draft stating that the most dangerous time to travel on Irish roads is on a Friday between 2pm and 4pm. Unsurprisingly, this is when many of the major routes in the country are at their busiest as people are finished work for the week and are either heading home or away for the weekend. Records show that in 2013, there were 26 people killed on our roads during this period, which was an increase of ten from the previous year. “The numbers in the Traffic division have been cut from 1,200 to 800. They don’t have enough patrol cars, enough resources, they don’t get enough sleep. As long as that shortfall continues, lives will be lost,” said RSA chairman Gay Byrne. Overall, 190 people were killed on Irish roads throughout 2013, in 181 collisions. Of those, 127 were drivers or passengers in cars; 31 were pedestrians; 27 were motorcyclists and five were cyclists.

Intelligent Telematics expands into Ireland with Smart Telematics acquisition

Intelligent Telematics, the integrated camera and tracking specialist, has acquired Smart Telematics as part of its global expansion plan. As a result, the Waterford-based vehicle CCTV and safety system company will provide Intelligent Telematics with a local presence within the Republic of Ireland as well as a gateway into mainland Europe.

Smart Telematics currently consults and supplies vehicle journey recorders and accident cameras to insurance companies and brokers, vehicle tracking organisations and end users. Moving forward, it will take advantage of Intelligent Telematics’ unrivalled range of solutions including the recently launched IT 1000 and IT 500, the most sophisticated and powerful vehicle cameras currently available that utilise video, telematics and 3/4G technologies.

Sam Footer, Head of International Business and Strategic Development at Intelligent Telematics commented: “Smart Telematics is a likeminded business that expands our presence in the UK and Ireland as well as supporting our future growth into continental Europe. We are committed to creating a global infrastructure by the end of the year through a network of owned and partner organisations. This already includes a dedicated office in Brisbane covering Australasia and plans to launch an operation in Chicago during February for the North American marketplace.” Intelligent Telematics was launched last year to help vehicle operators mitigate financial and operational risks within their fleet operations. The advanced end-to-end solutions combine tracking and integrated camera technology to capture footage of incidents along with supporting vehicle data, providing proof of what really happened and protect against avoidable insurance costs.

Cement Group condemn attack

Lagan Cement Group recently suffered damage of more than 1m euros in three separate attacks. In a statement the company said: "These scandalous attacks orchestrated by a small group of criminals and their equally criminal sponsors are directly connected to similar attacks on Aventas property over a lengthy period of time. "These criminals seem to think that a continuation of such activity will somehow intimidate the current owners of these businesses into reinstating the former owner, which is very much misjudged." The attacks followed the announcement that Lagan was buying, subject to approval, Rooftiles in County Fermanagh from the Aventas Group.

Major investment by Toyota

Toyota Material Handling UK has invested seven million pounds in its short-term hire fleet. This means more than 3,500 trucks are now available for customers who need an emergency replacement, or are experiencing unexpected demand and seasonal peaks. Toyota says the investment enables it to offer customers a greater choice and availability of the latest models. The company plans to invest in a further 500 trucks throughout 2014. "We have increased our fleet in the areas where we have the most demand, and want to provide our customers with the highest quality trucks, which is why nearly 40 per cent of the whole fleet and 62 per cent of the counterbalance fleet is less than three years old," said rental operations manager for Toyota Material Handling UK, Rachel Thomas. "We are also looking at how we can support specialised industries by ordering industry tailored trucks."

Proposed Ringaskiddy Redevelopment Plans Go On Display in 3D

The Port of Cork Company recently unveiled their proposed redevelopment plans for Ringaskiddy. This key piece of strategic infrastructure was shown in 3D on a Real Simulated Model, highlighting the redevelopment from different aspects of the lower harbour. It is anticipated following the public consultation that the Port of Cork will lodge a planning application with An Bord Pleanala in April 2014. The proposed developments under consideration form an extension to the existing facilities that Port of Cork currently operates at Ringaskiddy. Development is being considered in four key areas: 1. At Ringaskiddy East, where works will comprise of: • A multi-purpose berth that will be capable of accommodating vessels carrying a range of different cargoes including containers, unaccompanied Roll On – Roll Off freight and general cargoes; • An additional 200 metres long berth which will be used for port container traffic; • A new container yard and marshalling area; 2. At Ringaskiddy West, where works will comprise of: • A 180 metre extension to the existing Deepwater Berth; • Dredging works to facilitate navigational access to the new facilities

3. At Paddy’s Point, where a new public slipway is being constructed, new planting and landscaping is being provided in a new public amenity area and new pedestrian circulation routes, will be introduced. 4. Improvements to the existing road entrance at the Ringaskiddy Deep-water Terminal and internal road upgrades to improve connectivity to the remainder of the port complex and facilitate future connection to a new upgraded N28 both east and west of Ringaskiddy Village.

These proposed redevelopments are the first phase of the implementation of the Port of Cork’s Strategic Development Plan Review (2010), the core principles of which were endorsed in the National Ports Policy, which highlighted Cork as a Tier 1 port of national significance. The Policy also identified the continued commercial development of the Port of Cork Company as a key strategic objective. As well as these proposed redevelopments, the Port of Cork is looking at a Demand Management System, which will allow the Port of Cork to control and manage the flow of unitised cargo, entering and exiting Ringaskiddy, at peak times, both in the short and longer term. The Port of Cork is very encouraged by the NRA’s recent commitment to the upgrade of the current N28 linking Ringaskiddy to Cork City. This vital piece of infrastructure will, when upgraded, improve the road network significantly.

Following the last round of non-statutory public consultation held in April 2013, the Port of Cork has taken into account, where possible, the comments from residents and communities within the harbour. All feedback was considered and some amendments were made to the proposed plans presented at the time. The following elements were changed: • Omission of reclamation and associated quay construction at Ringaskiddy West, • The development area now includes the existing Ringaskiddy pier and slipway. A replacement pier, slipway and associated landscaped amenity area will now be provided at Paddy’s Point. • The upgrade of the existing road access has been changed from a roundabout to a signal controlled junction. • Re-alignment of internal roads to tie in with the access point to the new N28 Speaking about the proposed redevelopments at Ringaskiddy Mr Denis Healy, Manager Engineering Services, Port of Cork said: “We have had constructive pre-application engagement with An Bord Pleanala to date and it is our intention to lodge a planning application in April this year. “Our needs as a port of national significance have not changed. This European Policy positions the Port of Cork as a priority TEN-T Core Network port, the foundation blocks of which, will drive the Port to meet future connectivity needs and will support the development of the wider regional and national economy. This TEN-T funding is of key importance to the port.” Mr Healy outlined the specific drivers for this port redevelopment as; • A Tier 1 Port of national significance which must continue the commercial development of the Port of Cork Company as a key strategic objective • Current Navigational and Landside Constraints at Tivoli Container Terminal • Need to Develop a New Deep-water Container Terminal capable of efficiently servicing Larger and Deeper Drafted Vessels • Overcome Berthing and Landside Capacity Constraints at Ringaskiddy Deep-water Terminal • Provide Certainty for all Stakeholders that Consolidated Replacement Facilities can be provided. • Maximise the Utilisation of Existing Port Assets and Locations • Need for Port to respond to changing Trade and Logistics Dynamics • Flexibility to Respond to Needs as they arise in a Financially Sustainable Manner

The Port of Cork is a key link to the economic success of Ireland, in particular the entire Munster region. 98% of goods imported or exported from Ireland are moved by ship, highlighting the importance of ports to our economy.

More choice and cost savings for hauliers as LD Lines opens up Ireland-European mainland access

Ferry operator LD Lines can now provide the Irish haulage market with greater choice and unique transport solutions with the introduction of its new service connecting Rosslare – St.Nazaire (Montoir) on West coast of France and Gijón in Northern Spain. This first-ever ferry service between the three countries has the potential to forge new trading links, combined with costsaving advantages for hauliers and further key benefits including reduced drive times combined with environmental benefits. The cost comparisons of the new ferry services versus travelling overland are significant : Overland mileage from Rosslare to Gijón is 1260 miles which equates to a fuel cost of around £750 ; include cost of ferry crossing up to £500 gives a total of £1250 ; By LD Lines’ ferry service crossing times from Rosslare to St.Nazaire (Montoir) and on to Gijón, of 22 and 16 hours respectively, paying an average price freight rate, can offer savings of around £250, but importantly provide drivers with an essential rest period, in preparation for driving from the ports to onward European destinations. Overland mileage from Rosslare to St.Nazaire (Montoir) is 755 miles which equates to fuel cost of around £430 ; include cost of ferry crossing up to £500 gives a total of £930. Driving time is on average 13 hours, but drivers stipulated rest time is 8 hours. Even with differing freight rates for customers, cost savings will be made and drivers would be reducing drivetimes by over 20 hours by taking the LD Lines’ Rosslare – St.Nazaire (Montoir) service, arriving refreshed for the miles ahead on the continental road networks. Bypassing the UK landbridge is also a major advantage to and from the Continental mainland. In addition the port of St.Nazaire (Montoir) is better located for France bound freight traffic, with good connections to the Autoroutes du Sud de la France and entire French motorway network, than other ferry connections between Ireland and regions of France such as Normandy and Brittany. The onward service to the port of Gijón also gives drivers hassle-free access into Northern Spain, with excellent connections to the Autovia motorways such as the A-63 and A-66 from Gijón to Seville, which links with the rest of the Spanish road networks and into Portugal. “We have identified a real demand from the Irish haulage market the need to provide such a service that links Ireland, France and Spain and these new ferry connections, which gives the market greater choice, clearly sets us apart from the competition,” says Christophe Santoni, LD Lines’ CEO. “Significantly, the timing of the introduction reflects growing confidence and evidence of signs of recovery for many European economies and the provision of new transport links such as this can play a key role in the continuation of an improving market.” Operating the new route is the Norman Atlantic. The modern Ro Ro vessel was built in 2008/2009 by the Visentini Italian shipyard and has capacity for up to 110 freight vehicles or 150 trailers. On board facilities include a combination of 120 spacious and comfortable 2 or 4 berth cabins, bar, restaurant, shop and a full range of passenger entertainment is being developed in the months ahead. Freight drivers are also offered an inclusive fare which combines the ferry crossings with cabin and meals on board. This new service represents a major extension of LD Lines’ “Motorway of the Seas” Atlantic network, which has also recently seen the introduction of other ferry routes between Poole and Santander, which began in November 2013 and Poole – Gijón which commenced in January 2014, the same month as the Rosslare –St.Nazaire (Montoir) – Gijón service start-up. Operating on the Poole – Santander and Poole - Gijón routes is the Norman Atlantic’s sister ship Norman Asturias. Recently delivered Concept Trailers include fixed skelly trailers to Mark Lonergan Transport, curtainsiders to Sam Dennigan & Co. and flat trailers to Ward & Burke Construction. In addition, a wide range of second hand trailers are in stock at the yard in Ashbourne, including low loaders, tipping trailers, flats and Euroliners. worked in garages since I was 14. I’ve been in the trade all my life, since I left school and was always involved very much in the tyre environment. “I opened the first tyre centre in Ballyhaunis, County Mayo, which I bought from a guy I used to work for. Seven years ago, I opened the depot in Castlerea, County Roscommon and that was another previous workplace of mine. I opened up in Ballaghaderreen, County Roscommon six years ago. “The three depots are wellpositioned within the one catchment area, 13 or 14 miles apart, all complementing each other but each with its own identity. It’s an ideal set-up for us to cover the entire area.” Between the three garages, Keith provides employment to a total of 14 people – certainly a great boost to the local economy in these unforgiving economic times. Regarding the comprehensive array of services available, Keith confirms: “We supply new tyres for cars, light commercials, agricultural machinery, off-road, tractors, trailers etc. – wholesale (with our own delivery service) and retail. We stock all the major brands and also sell mid-range and budget tyres.

“We also do batteries, oils and lubricants, puncture and tyre repairs and tyre vulcanisation on agricultural tyres. We offer a mobile tyre repair service to our customers, covering the 32 counties as well as full mechanical repairs including servicing, brake pads, exhausts, timing belts and clutches.” Commercial vehicle owners account for a large percentage of Keith’s clients. As for the effects of the economic downturn on his business, he continues: “We’ve held our own through the recession. I buy in huge quantities and

carry a large stock, so we are very competitively priced. I’m not afraid to do deals with people. We cater for what people want and 99% of the time we will have the exact tyre they want in stock and at the right price. It’s all about giving the customer what he or she wants and we pride ourselves on providing the best-quality products and service. We have built up a very strong customer base over the years and our knowledge of the tyre industry means that we more or less know what they want. When you back that up with a good response and back-up service, then people tend to come back

to do business again.” To ensure complete customer satisfaction, the 24hour customer call-out is vital and Keith provides this to all his clients. “For existing customers, we will cover the 32 counties but we also do after-hours call-outs in the local area for anybody. We will look after anyone who finds themselves stuck on the side of the road in Mayo or Roscommon, whether they are an existing customer or not. “The back-up service is very important to us as you have to make sure that your customers are fully looked after. It’s geared towards making our Keith set the business up in 2002

customers feel that they matter to us, which we have managed to do well since the business was started.” There was a time when a tyre was just a black round thing that went around a wheel and the tyre business was comparatively uncomplicated. But these days are gone now and the tyre industry has developed into a highlyspecialist sector where only experienced experts should be engaged. “You really have to know what you’re doing.” Keith agrees. “This isn’t an industry where anybody can just turn their hand to it. There are more sizes and options and variations than ever before and it really is a professional industry. “All of our staff would be fullyqualified, highly-trained and experienced mechanics and they really know their stuff. I’m a strong believer that a lad doing any job should know what he’s doing and that’s a principle we stand by. “We offer on-the-spot repairs and there is no messing about or unnecessary delays. get back as quickly as possible so we provide a very fast service – in and out.” Looking to the future, Keith Revins intends to consolidate the business he has built up so painstakingly over the past twelve years. He will continue to provide the same highquality products and services for which he is renowned: “The plan is to focus on improving the service in all three depots,” he concludes. “We aim to maximise the potential of the business and grow further. We have all local lads working in the three towns and I’d provide a very handson service myself. I move between the three depots and I’m on the floor around the clock. I’m always available to discuss queries with customers and all the afterhours calls go through me.” Offering total transparency, Keith deals with all his clients on a one-on-one basis and looks after each of them to the very best of his ability. Clearly, he is doing a fantastic job if the success of Keith Revins Tyres Ltd. to date is anything to go by.

Location, location, location As of January 2nd, 2014, PalletXpress is operating out of a new 60,000 sq ft central hub in Northwest Business Park, Ballycoolin, Dublin 15. Irish Trucker met up with managing director Tom Carr to discuss this major relocation, which adds even further efficiency to the network’s already-stellar service. 32

Tom Carr at PalletXpress in Northwest Business Park, Ballycoolin

aving outgrown its previous base in Naas, County Kildare, PalletXpress has moved it central hub lock, stock and barrel to a purpose-built unit in Ballycoolin – 200 Northwest Business Park to be precise. MD Tom Carr explains the thinking behind the relocation: “The network has grown substantially over the last year or two and it got to the stage where we had a capacity issue in Naas. Over Christmas, we moved to a 60,000 sq ft site in Dublin which will allow us to develop the business even

further and to take on additional business, which we weren’t able to do because of the capacity restrictions in Naas.” The new location wasn’t chosen on a whim. A great deal of thought and planning went into this move before a new home was selected for PalletXpress: “This is exactly what we required,” Tom enthuses. “In total, I looked at around 20 – 25 buildings, but I kept coming back to this one. It’s an ideal location. We can also develop daytime traffic now and access is excellent,

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

especially with the N3 and N4 having been joined recently. “We will also be in a position to develop a few more strings to our bow. We will provide bonded warehousing in Ballycoolin and will be in a position to strip containers. Location-wise, we are also in the centre of freight activity in Dublin and close to Dublin Port.” Are there any downsides to the move? For example, will it be more expensive to operate the network out of Dublin? “It will be a little bit more expensive and there is a cost to moving as well but we are sufficiently well funded to make this move without breaking stride and the benefits will be far outweigh the costs. This move was inevitable – at some stage we were always going to have to bring the network to a new base.” Ultimately, it was a capacity issue. PalletXpress had outgrown its old HQ and the resultant restraints were hindering the growth and profitability of the network. “We are taking in on average 8501000 units per night and the facility in Naas was only suitable for 700-800,” Tom continues. “Our hand was forced as we were doing volumes that we had never experienced before and this simply wasn’t sustainable unless we relocated. The new facility provides an ideal solution going forward, from both a capacity and a location point of view. “There are no limits to what we can achieve here. We have added 36,000 sq ft to our capacity and I’m confident that we will be able to generate enough additional business to reach full capacity here. We are also generating additional employment. We’ll have 25/26 people working on site here, which is up from Naas.” At present there are 17 members of the PalletXpress network. Are there any plans to increase this number? “We may add another two or three, but we don’t want to overdo it. We don’t want to spread the network too thin. It’s not about having the most members; it’s

about having the best members and the best network. So we will be very strategic and careful when it comes to adding new members.” Although the transport / haulage sector has been hard hit by the economic downturn, PalletXpress has more than weathered the storm… “We hit record figures in 2013, particularly over the last five or six months” says Tom. “And I see very encouraging signs that there has been a slight pick-up in the economy last year. We’ve never moved as many units as we’re moving at the minute. Having said that, margins remain tight and of course we would like to see rates moving up a little. But at least the freight is moving and that’s a start…” It goes without saying that being based in Dublin offers obvious advantages. “A lot of our customers are in Dublin and we can now provide them with a faster and more efficient service,” Tom concludes. “Everything about this move is extremely positive. We can now offer a more efficient, more streamlined service from the heart of the freight corridor. We can develop more business and we intend to develop our IT further as well as marketing PalletXpress more vigorously than we have done in the past. This is an area that we may have neglected in the past so I’m expecting a big push to market the network over the next sixtwelve months.” PalletXpress arrived as a breath of fresh air when it was launched as Ireland’s first trulyindependent freight hub during the summer of 2004. By pooling the resources of highquality hauliers from around the country, Ireland’s leading independent palletised freight network provides a prompt, reliable and affordable nationwide service. As operation costs are substantially reduced by the co-operative effect, everybody is a winner. PalletXpress is Ireland’s only independent palletised freight network specialising in the

nother successful year beckons for JD’s Recovery - one of the biggest recovery operators in the south of Ireland. Established in 1998, the company has made significant strides in recent years, having secured the contract for An Garda Siochana’s Cork city division four years ago. Founder-proprietor John Dalton isn’t going to take his eye off the ball, however. Rather than allowing complacency slip into his mindset, he continues to invest the same reserves of energy and time – not to mention capital! – into the self-made business as he has since Day One. “We’re tipping away, thanks be to God,” he notes, modestly. “We’re getting stronger and we have added

three new trucks to the fleet inside the last three years.” In the recovery business, it’s vital to keep the fleet fresh and flexible. To this end, John has never been found wanting and he has vehicles at his disposal that can handle literally any recovery operation. The latest additions comprise one Scania and two fantastic DAFs. “I got a 19-tonne DAF LF with 15-tonne crane for big vans and, more recently, a DAF CF 410 with Boniface top-boom and a brand-new underlift fitted. It’s a real cracker of a truck and we are absolutely delighted with it. We’ve had it out a number of times already and it’s a real pleasure to work. It can handle any job, from a car or a van up to a bus or HGV.” The fleet at present consists

of ten specialist trucks, all PAS 43 certified and fitted with the latest specialist recovery equipment, as well as a jeep and a van for backup. “We have the gear here to

handle any job,” John confirms, “Whatever comes to us, we can do it. We have the right tools and the right equipment and we have invested a huge amount of money into the business

No job is too big for JD Recovery

since the day I started.” John’s father Frank was an inspirational figure behind the genesis of the company all those years ago and is still a driving force behind the operation – at the age of 80! Having worked in the motor trade all his life, it was Frank who came up with the idea of buying a recovery truck after

he retired at the age of 65. John stepped back from his car valeting business and followed his dad into the recovery trade – the rest is history! “He’s 80 now and he’s our ‘security man’ here,” John notes. “He’s some man. He loves being around the place. He opens up every morning

at 6:30 and he keeps an eye on everything and makes sure nothing is out of place.”

of local garages, car rental firms and local Garda stations. In order to keep up with the increasing volume of work, a second truck was quickly added. For the first few years, John literally ran the business from his home. The first brand-new truck was purchased in 2002 – a Mercedes. John’s nephew Wayne Morrison joined the team in 2004 as a driver. Wayne was only 18 years old at the time but he has been John’s right hand man ever since, hugely involved in the running of the business, along with John’s wife Rachel, who expertly handles the administrative side of things (ably assisted in the office by Elizabeth). Since its inception, JD’s Recovery has forged a stellar reputation for excellent response times, a courteous, professional staff and an impeccable recovery solution provided by a modern fleet of vehicles. Strategically, John was always building towards securing the Garda contract for Cork city and, in February 2010, JD’s Recovery was successful in achieving this objective. Under the terms of the Garda contract, JD’s Recovery is responsible for the recovery of vehicles within the Cork city division, including breakdowns, accidents, illegally-parked vehicles etc. All the necessary legal requirements are in place, including a full haulage licence and waste collection permits and JD’s Recovery is authorised to issue destruction certificates. All staff – eleven people at present - at JD’s Recovery

are fully IFRS (International Federation of R e c o v e r y Specialists) trained to handle light and heavy vehicle recovery as well as motorcycles (and a b r e a k d o w n assistance service). A personal and professional service is provided at all times and literally anything – with or without wheels upside down or lying on its side, can be recovered without causing any further damage to the vehicle. JD’s Recovery operates 24 hours a day, seven days per week all over Ireland and sometimes into the UK. The dedication that goes into running an operation of this magnitude is second to none. “The way we operate here, we offer a 24-hour breakdown and recovery service and as such we are expected to have both the equipment

Wayne Morrison does an outstanding job as manager and Rachel, Liz and John do brilliant work in the office in keeping everything coordinated and running smoothly. “Obviously, in an ideal world, I’d probably like a bit more time off but this is the career I’ve chosen and the commitment I’ve made and you just have to get on with it.” Long term, John says he would love to one day hand over the keys of the business to the third generation of the Dalton family – namely his daughter Keely (13): “I’ve had a little recovery truck specially built for her and I also got a full air-brush portrait job done on one of the trucks, with pictures of Keely from when she was one year old up to eleven years old.” The accompanying logo reads ‘This is what it’s all about; she smiles for miles.’ One look at this truck and it’s clear to see where John Dalton’s priorities lie and exactly why he has invested so much of his life into making JD’s Recovery the success it is.

The production line for the Hiab Moffett

n August, 2011, Moffett Engineering Limited - the Dundalk-based manufacturer of Hiab Moffett truckmounted forklifts and part of Cargotec Corporation - changed its name to Cargotec Engineering Ireland. Moffett Engineering Limited had started business in Clontibret, County Monaghan during the 1940s by developing products for the local agricultural market. But in the mid1980s, they created a revolution in the transport industry with the invention of the truck-mounted forklift, an innovative three-wheel-drive machine that can be

carried on almost any truck or trailer without the loss of load space, achieving significantly faster and more cost effective deliveries than ever. The current Hiab Moffett model range includes specialist machines for all applications from building, agriculture and animal feed, recycling, poultry, gas work and a huge range of other commercial and industrial uses. With a lift capacity from 1.5 to 3.5t and specialist attachments, the Hiab Moffett continues to stand for quality, innovation and the latest advances in safety and technology.

The company became part of Cargotec in 2000 and today their truck -mounted forklifts are branded as Hiab Moffett and are the undisputed global market leader, the branding of the products as Hiab Moffett and the company name change to Cargotec being in line with Cargotec’s branding strategy. (Hiab, together with Kalmar and MacGregor, are Cargotec’s three core brands and recognised leaders in cargo and load handling solutions around the world.) Cargotec is renowned on the world stage as a distributor of Hiab truckmounted boom cranes and Moffett

Australia, Canada, China, Brazil – you name it!” Headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, Cargotec is a futureoriented, truly global cargo handling solutions provider with operations in more than 120 countries as well as in excess of 750 sales and service locations worldwide. Employing more than 10,000 people, Cargotec delivers cargo and load handling solutions and services for the biggest shipping companies in the world as well as for small and medium-sized local operators. Solutions are strongly localised for customer needs and these are used in various sectors in inland transport and delivery, including construction, distribution, warehousing and defence. In addition to cargo and load handling solutions, Cargotec also offers a wide range of backup services, including maintenance, repair, spare parts and training. The Hiab Moffett is the global market leading brand in on-road load handling solutions, delivering a versatile and proven range of loader cranes, demountables, truckmounted forklifts and tail lifts, all of which enable the safe and efficient loading and unloading of material on-site. Reflecting on the genesis and history of Cargotec Engineering Ireland Ltd., Michael explains: “The business goes back 68 years in Clontibret, as Moffett Engineering, but changed its name to Cargotec in 2011. Cargotec is the parent company and we re-branded to Cargotec Engineering Ireland. The original facility was in Clontibret but we have been in Dundalk since the Moffett family sold the business in 1997.” A huge landmark was reached in September, 2012 when the 50,000th truckmounted forklift rolled off the assembly line at the Dundalkbased facility. “We buy in all the components and fully-

assemble the Hiab Moffett here in Dundalk, including all the paintwork etc. We also have R&D, spare parts, a service division and a

technical division. “We are constantly evolving and developing the business in close collaboration with our suppliers and end users. These end users would be involved throughout the entire production process and the product will be built to exact specification, with an ongoing process of evaluation and reevaluation.” Between production, research and development, and accounts, a crew of 215 is currently employed at the well-appointed Cargotec Engineering Ireland Ltd. facility on the Ardee Road in Dundalk, County Louth – a massive fillip to the local economy during these recessionary times. Looking to the future, Michael concludes: “Our objective would be to continue to expand and to develop new markets that we may not be in yet. We are No.1 in the world and we hope to strengthen our position at the forefront of the market. “We have developed the first lithium ion powered

truck-mounted forklift, which is currently undergoing trials, and we are hopeful that it will prove to be an important innovation.

“In the past, we have proven ourselves to be innovators and market leaders and we will continue to set the standard for others to follow.”

through having a strong management and resources to do so, and seeks to capitalise on opportunities within the market as they arise. Since the onset of the recession, vehicle rental has

become increasingly popular with many in the transport industry who are eager to reduce their costs and remove unnecessary overheads. “The recession has had both positive and negative impact for us, but on balance mostly positive,” Walker’s business development manager Michael O’Dwyer explains. “Customers have seen an alternative to over-exposing themselves with credit, but they have also seen the light with regard to having hugely depreciating assets on their balance sheets when they own their own vehicles. Maintenance is a huge issue nowadays and we provide a full fleet management service which provides peace of mind and gets rid of the headaches and costs of day-to-day management issues with servicing.”

The impressive fleet at James Foy Auto Services

oming up on 25 years in business, James Foy Auto Services have managed to build a highly trusted and respected reputation throughout the surrounding area of their base in Dromore West and beyond for their garage services and vehicle

breakdown recovery in Sligo, and nationwide. While it’s often said about progressive companies, there is no doubting James Foy and his company have come a long way since first setting up in 1990. Recounting the decision to first set up his auto repair and

recovery business in Dromore West, James explained that he had “always wanted to go out on my own” and “saw the opportunity to do it back then.” Back then, the country was coming making its way out of a recession which had gripped it throughout the ‘80s,

and James felt that there was definitely an opportunity for an honest and prompt auto recovery and repair service to blossom in the west of Ireland. “I think when I started up there was just one other auto recovery company in Sligo,” he stated.

For all your breakdown needs Since its inception in 1990, James Foy Auto Services has been providing members of the public with an honest, reliable and prompt service. Irish Trucker found out more from James Foy himself about the business he has watched grow into an award winning company. CONTACT DETAILS 48

well. Our recovery service we would be covering nationwide too, not just the west of Ireland.” Covering the entire country and offering a 24-hour, 365-day service at the same time is no easy feat, as one can imagine. That’s why James works alongside some of the best in the business in the form of panel-beater Michael O’Sullivan and mechanic/recovery technicians John Killeen, Eoin Coggins, Ray Munnelly and Shane Feeney. His wife Geraldine is also involved with the company, looking after the accounts, while their son Brian is already showing a keen interest in this line of business at just 11 years old. So despite the tough times, things are looking very positive from James’ prospective and thus far he can look back on starting a company which has provided an excellent service an award winning service, in fact. In 2009, James Foy Auto Service was awarded the Hibernian Aviva Contractor of the Year award and the following year saw the company winning Ireland’s Assist Regional Contractor of the Year award. James admits that the business has come a long way from when he first started up with a small truck, which was a Toyota Dyna, and acknowledges that a lot of credit must go to his loyal staff. “I’d like to pay tribute to the lads here. You’re only as good as your staff, and they’re all very loyal and have played a big part

“It’s a lot more competitive now, but we have a good standing in the area, we have a lot of loyal customers who value the way we do things and it’s all about working hard to keep our standards up so that we can keep going the way we are.” A mechanic by trade, James founded the company initially as a one-man operation, looking after vehicle repairs for the most part. Indeed, the firm still operates a full workshop with all the latest diagnostic equipment in place. Once he spotted a gap in the vehicle recovery market in the area, however, it wasn’t long before he began focussing on that end of the business and he hasn’t looked back since. Business began to thrive and in 1992 a contract was agreed with AA and from there AXA Assist, Britannia Rescue, Aria Assistance, Green Flag, Hibernian Aviva, Ireland Assist, MIS Assist and Mondial Assistance all followed in its footsteps to become clients of James Foy Auto Service. “When it comes to recovery, we can handle everything from a Honda 50 to an articulated lorry,” James explained. “We cover every aspect of recovery. We look after vehicle transportation and motorbike recovery. We move tractors and plant, LCV and HGV, and have the equipment to recover coaches as IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

James Foy Auto Services can recover all types of vehicles

in our success over the years,” he said. In recent years, James Foy Auto Service has earned itself a glowing reputation for its excellent service and reliability and it has companies like RAC Commercials and AA Truck Rescue that have come on board as regular clients. An extensive fleet includes a 26-tonne Scania with a Dyson plant body and three Mercedes tilt and slides ranging from 4.5 to 15 tonne GVW, all with all bodies made by Shanco. One of those comes with a crane capable of damage free lifting of cars and light commercials. A Mercedes Actros is used for heavy recovery. It has Boniface equipment and is fitted with side winders and caters for the damage free lifting of coaches. “We also offer a motorcycle recovery service, as well as a mobile unit for fuel drainage if someone is unfortunate enough to put the wrong fuel in their vehicle,” he said. Although the economic downturn has affected everyone in any line of business throughout the country, James remains as optimistic as ever. “This is a competitive business to be in. The cost of running your vehicles is very high but we’re delighted to be in a busy period at the moment,” he said. “Things mightn’t be as busy as they were in the past but I have noticed that people

aren’t purchasing new vehicles or fleets as much. They’re concentrating a bit more on maintenance instead of upgrading, so that means the garage has been ticking along over the last while.” In addition to its agreements with a host of insurers and roadside recovery specialist companies, James Foy Auto Service is the preferred partner a number of main dealers in Sligo and Ballina, while they handle 24-hour recovery for some major car companies. They also assist the Emergency Services in the west Sligo area and local bus companies. It all makes for promising signs and will see an on going investment in both technology and staff training, as James Foy Auto Service keeps up to speed with all the latest developments in its field. “All the vehicle recovery companies we have agreements with inspect regularly, so we work hard to keep all our vehicles up to spec,” outlined James. “All our trucks are PAS43 standard (the management system specification for the safe working of vehicle breakdown and recovery operations) and it goes without saying that all are serviced regularly and DOE’ed. We also do checks every six weeks” James has also ensured that his company is a member of SIMI (the Society of the Irish Motor Industry)

The firm receives training from both IVR (the Institute of Vehicle Recovery) and IFRS, which necessitates regular training courses for all staff members. “We’ve invested in technology quite a bit,” he said. “There are a few things that just can’t be done at the side of the road but we have diagnostics software which can solve a lot of issues without bringing the vehicle back to the garage.” Technology is a smart investment as far as James is concerned and he knows that a c h i e v i n g recognised standards is now a salient part of being a key player in the industry. For Renault Trucks, a truck is a profit centre, which never let customers down and which make their drivers proud, while at the same time protecting customers’ businesses. 'Drive the change' is the French manufacturer's slogan and, according to Pete, their customers have been pleasantly surprised with the efficiency and reliability of a Renault truck. Renault are also

dangling an attractive costsaving carrot in front of prospective clients. “The Renault truck brand awareness has increased dramatically amongst Irish haulage operators in the last three years as a result of the tool-kit supplied – Renault Trucks Finance, five year manufacturers warranty and class leading fuel economy,” Pete commented. “Our customers have become smarter and smarter and identified Renault as a product that is a very cost effective tool. “Those haulage operators who have been around a long time are no longer interested in spending €30,000 more on a truck that does the same job as a Renault. “Currently, the new T range comes with a 2 year Repair & Maintenance package as part of the deal.” As Pete mentioned, Renault Trucks Finance is available at competitive rates and customers are welcome to call to the premises to see for themselves the numerous benefits of choosing a Renault unit over its competitors. Pete joined Joe Curran Commercials as General Manager three years ago and, together with Managing Director Joe Curran, they boast 40 years experience between them in the motor industry. In other words, Pete and Joe are well aware of what the discerning customer wants and needs. Located on the Kells Road in

From humble beginnings which saw Allan purchase a Bedford Tipper to work the development of the M1 motorway in Dungannon in

Specialising in general haulage and ISO tanker operations, the company, which located in Gilford has always had the ability to diversify into other areas of the industry and this has been cited as one of the reasons for their vast success over the years. Despite, facing into numerous recessions and

economic downturns, Allan has always been able to drive the company on, with the help of his family and work colleagues who were all present to see him receive his award on such a special night. Another reason for Allan’s success is his dedication to his profession, while his determination to succeed is unrivalled. The Commercial Vehicle Testing is a big part of the business

aving already developed an unrivalled reputation in the fields of haulage, servicing and school bus operation, Mount Leinster Haulage also branched into commercial vehicle testing with tremendous success. Just over three years ago, a strategic decision was taken by the directors in this successful family-run business to re-brand the commercial test operation as ESC Commercial Test Centre Ltd. Mairead Spruhan Ryan daughter of founder / managing director Eamonn Spruhan, notes: “One of the biggest developments here at Mount Leinster Haulage in recent years was the establishment of ESC Commercial Test Centre Ltd., which was set up as a stand-alone company to provide commercial vehicle testing. “Basically, the new company grew out of the existing one. The

transition has been seamless and, in many ways, nothing has changed. It’s still the same test centre and we offer the exact same service as before, but we just wanted to separate the two companies.” Eamonn’s wife Breda and sons Edward and Cathal are the directors of ESC Commercial Test Centre Ltd., which provides annual Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Tests (CVRT) for Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) and Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) from across counties Carlow, Kildare, Wexford, Laois and sometimes beyond. The very nature of commercial testing is such that there will always be a demand for the service once it is provided in a professional, friendly and efficient manner. Regardless of whether the economy is going boom or bust, operators still

New name; same unbeatable service In late 2010, Mount Leinster Haulage renamed the vehicle testing arm of its operation ESC Commercial Test Centre Ltd. While the name may have changed, the County Carlow based family business still provides the same stellar level of service for which it has become renowned over the past three decades and more. Irish Trucker dropped into the Bagenalstown base and got an update from founder Eamonn Spruhan. CONTACT DETAILS 78

have to get their vehicles tested and certified. Edward Spruhan commented “We’re reasonably busy. It is a statutory requirement so, at the end of the day, people do have to pass the test if they want to keep their vehicles on the road.” Does the presence of an on-site workshop mean that it’s essentially a one-stop shop for testing and repairs? “Owners have the option of having repairs done on site by Mount Leinster Haulage - or of getting a quote from us but this isn’t something that we try to force onto anybody. The service is there if they need it but they are obviously free to make their own arrangements.” Mount Leinster Haulage’s state-of-theart workshop / garage provides full servicing, maintenance and repair services for its own fleet of buses, trucks

and trailers as well as catering for the needs of other local and national commercial vehicle operators. “Investment is ongoing in the garage and we have all the latest dealer-level diagnostic equipment needed to work on all makes and models of commercial vans, lorries, trailers, and buses” says Cathal Spruhan, who was recently shortlisted for Technician of the Year 2014 by Fleet. “We also provide a towing and recovery service for all HGVs; trucks, buses as well as LCVs.” Between drivers, testers, mechanics / technicians and office / admin staff, Mount Leinster Haulage / ESC Commercial Test Centre currently provides employment to a team of 25. While business at the test centre remains brisk, the directors reveal that the haulage sector can be unpredictable:

“The buses are mostly doing school runs and service work. We tend to be reasonably busy in that the work is mostly concentrated during the academic year, but the haulage fluctuates.” The haulage business tends to be managed by the owner and another son Seamus, whose passion from a young age was trucks. “We provide a local and national service and we are ticking over. But the way the economy is at the moment, with a lot of uncertainty out there, you take it one day at a time.” Mount Leinster Haulage was established as a garage repairs and servicing operation predominantly back in 1980. During the intervening 34 years, the family business has diversified significantly into various different areas, including haulage, school buses and

vehicle testing. The owners have been providing school bus servicing since 1979 and their fleet has grown considerably since the first mini bus - a Comer- was purchased. Around about the same time, Mount Leinster Haulage also became active in haulage, starting off by doing work for a local quarry as well as drawing sugar beet and grain. Mount Leinster Haulage’s advent into the sphere of vehicle testing in May, 2007 – and the subsequent arrival of ESC Commercial Test Centre Ltd. – was a quarter of a century in the making. This was an area that founder Eamonn Spruhan was always interested in since the mandatory tests were introduced in 1982 and he now oversees one of the most dependable and popular commercial vehicle test centres in the country. To get the testing operation

up and running, significant investment in infrastructure, equipment and training was required and the company proprietor knew it would take time before he started to see any return on this investment. However, ESC Commercial Test Centre is now a fullyestablished and thriving entity in its own right and – working in conjunction with the Road Safety Authority – it is providing a commercial vehicle testing service that’s simply second to none. Of course, none of the other facets of the operation have been neglected and the directors of Mount Leinster Haulage continue to concentrate their energies on promoting all other elements of the business, i.e. the haulage, buses and workshop. Across the board, things are going well and the business is in a strong position going forward.

Express Bus Going Your Way Express Bus is one of Ireland’s largest operators, transporting 25,000 passengers a week and specialising in the running of shuttle buses in the Dublin region. Managing director Phil Gaynor explains more.

E

Express Bus Managing Director Phil Gaynor

stablished for over 15 years, Express Bus is a thriving and growing business which boasts an extensive fleet of buses and provides a complete one-stop solution for all your travel needs. Based in Mulhuddart, Dublin 15, Express Bus currently employs 70 staff and expects that figure to reach close to 100 in the next 12 months. The company operates contracted shuttle bus services for many college and large multi-national corporate clients to and from the city centre. Some of its key clients include IBM (over 24 services per day), Institute of Technology Blanchardstown (ITB), Dublin Airport Authority (DAA), CityWest, Ashfield College (daily shuttle for students in and out of school), National Aquatic Centre (eight services per day) and Park West Industrial Estate (32 services per day). In addition, Express Bus operates a private hire business. Recently, the company

launched two new services, LogOn, HopOn.com and Airport Super Shuttle. LogOn, H o p O n . c o m (logontohopon.com) specialises in door-to-door staff transport for ‘off’ hour shift workers at Dublin Airport (after 10pm and before 6am). With this service, Express Bus guarantees companies that their staff will be in on time, or they will provide their transport for free. It is a flexible service to suit your company’s needs. Its success is reflected in its growth from one passenger in 2012 to 5,000 per month in 2013. Airport Super Shuttle was launched on Monday, January 13 last. This is a courtesy shuttle bus service to and from Dublin Airport which is offered to guests staying at the Travel Lodge, Ballymun, Crowne Plaza Northwood and the Holiday Inn Express Northwood. The service runs for 18 hours every day (from 4am to midnight). “We have developed the LogOn, HopOn.com and Super Shuttle services in the past year and they are proving to be very successful,” enthuses Phil Gaynor who joined Express Bus in February 2013 as commercial director before

assuming the role of managing director. “They are focused on airport staff and airport users. These new services have resulted in us taking on 10 new staff. We aim to recruit a further 10 or 15 staff this year which will bring out overall total close to 100.” Express Bus is a business with strong family values which embraces a modern style of management, ensuring its clients receive the best possible care and attention. All of its vehicles are fitted with safety belts and are checked on a continual basis, thus ensuring comfort, safety and a top class service to customers at all times. Each vehicle is subject to a daily safety check and 5,000mile service intervals. “We keep a very close eye on fleet maintenance and safety,” the affable managing director points out. “We operate a state-of-theart fleet management system and pride ourselves on being the leader in the bus industry when it comes to health and safety. Recently, we surveyed 3,000 clients and less than one of one per cent said they were unhappy with the service. We have a very stringent policy when it comes to health and safety, and passenger comfort.” With one of the most diverse fleets in the country,

Express Bus can provide several variations of styles and size for the convenience of its clients. Vehicles range in size from 14-seater minibuses to 75-seater double decker buses. A party bus (fitted out with surround sound systems), stretch luxury Hummer hire and a fully-fitted out double decker wedding bus are also available. Wheelchair access and facilities are standard on most of the company’s 35strong fleet. Furthermore, Express Bus’ drivers – who are regarded as among the best in the business – are trained in health and safety, manual lifting and other key components to ensure maximum comfort and minimum inconvenience to passengers. “Our drivers enjoy a great rapport with our clients. They are reliable, customerfocused and driven. Some of them have been with us for 10 years or more. It goes without saying that they have played a big part in our success,” says Phil. Wi-Fi is now standard on most of Express Bus’ luxury fleet. As part of the company’s service, each passenger is provided with the following: access to a Real-time app showing the bus in motion both on the way to collect and during your journey; a telephone call 24

hours in advance from your driver to reconfirm all the pick-up and drop-off points and times; a free text within 15 minutes of arrival of collection with driver’s name and phone number. All charter hire guarantee “one minute late and you don’t pay a cent”. In addition, tickets can be bought online up to 60 seconds before pick-

up. Express Bus’ top 100 customers get personal telephone calls, site visits and even gifts and prizes. Express Bus’ commitment to a green and healthy environment is reflected in its plans to convert its entire fleet to bio-fuel by next year. It is in the process of making its own bio-fuel from used vegetable oil as Phil outlines:

“Our bio-fuel plant will be carbon-neutral and therefore good for the environment. It is something we are developing at the moment. We are sourcing vegetable oil throughout Ireland and the relevant equipment throughout Ireland and Europe. It’s estimated that we will need 10 tonnes of vegetable oil a month to run our entire fleet.” In the meantime, Express Bus will continue to provide a complete travel solution to its ever-expanding client-base. The company is proud to say it has never had an industrial strike in 15 years and is approximately six times faster than other public bus services on these routes. Last October at the

CityWest Hotel, Express Bus was awarded the accolade of “Best National Bus Operator for 2013/2014” at the Fleet magazine awards. The company was also shortlisted for the “Best Safety” and “Best Innovation” awards. However, the judges felt the company excelled in all areas, hence its achievement in receiving the overall top award. “It was our first time to enter and we were delighted to win the big award. One of the judges said he was blown away by our presentation, which was very humbling. The award reflects well on the hard work of our dedicated team of employees as well as on the passengers who use our service every day,” Phil concludes.

John Beers is always improving the services they offer and adding to the fleet and workshop. They were up to speed on the six weekly checks that were enforced from last year through adding computer diagnostic equipment and brake testing facility. “We've carried out safety inspections for a lot of our customers and it's going well,” Trish revealed. “We were ready for it anyway, it's not difficult to do but you have to make sure all the i's are dotted and t's crossed to confirm with the legislation.” John Beers also boast a fully

stocked workshop while their suppliers can deliver parts the same day. As part of their service they provide brake testing and computer diagnostic facilities. Their service vans, meanwhile, are also fully stocked which enables them to complete roadside repairs if required. They also have the facility to power wash vehicles. All their technicians are fully trained, so you know you are in the best possible hands and It's clear that 'going the extra mile' is very much part of the business philosophy. Their workshop now has a newly fitted brake testing facility and computer diagnosis programme which enables them to provide a full commercial and car repair service. They will also take the vehicle to the MOT Centre for testing. So how is business going at the moment? “It's a difficult time for many businesses but actually good for our business,” replied Trisha. “People are more interested in maintaining their vehicles rather that purchasing new ones. That's where we come in. It's hard work but we are more than prepared to do it. “We have a full Waste Carrier Licence and with our ISO qualification, we are able to deal with any vehicle.” At John Beers, they pride themselves on providing an unbeatable service at unbeatable prices.
