NCA demands more consumer info on waste disposal The National Consumer Agency has written to local authorities and companies operating in the sector to request that they provide more information to householders. The move comes after the agency experienced a raft of queries on the matter. Most of them related to uncertainty over which service providers operate in certain regions, confusion about charges, a lack of information in relation to cancelling services and the procedures for handling billing disputes.

The Tougher Oil Group’s hand has been strengthened considerably by its recent relocation to a state-of-the-art new facility at Newhall, Naas, County Kildare. A multifaceted operation boasting decades of expertise, an excellent product, a superb fleet and highly-trained, customerorientated staff, Tougher Oil believes there is particular scope for growth in the lubricants side of the business. Irish Trucker caught up with Operations Manager Hugo McManus and newlyappointed lubricant Sales and Marketing Manager Jonathan Coyne to find out more.
T
homas Tougher is the principle of the Tougher Oil Group and has been the main driving force behind the ongoing growth of the successful business since its inception. Thomas commenced trading in 1970 as a mechanical engineer in Newhall, Naas, County Kildare – the current site of the Group’s headquarters. From here, he expanded the business to include the operation of a garage and forecourt, later commencing a home heating oil business. This led to the incorporation of Tougher Oil Distributors Ltd. in 1986. Over the next 20 years, Thomas grew the business significantly and the Tougher Oil Group now comprises ten forecourts and shops, a bulk oil division with domestic and commercial customers, a hospitality division (two pubs, two restaurants and two B&Bs) and a property rental division. The latter includes the rental of circa two million sq ft of properties in The Tougher Business Park, which was constructed by the Group on land banks adjacent to its Newhall headquarters.
The new flagship service station and oil gantry in Newhall, which was constructed by main contractor Scott Engineering, boast truck-parking spaces and on-site food and beverage facilities. Furthermore, a new truck wash is also being installed as we speak. The Group – which operates through the DCI network and is currently developing a bio-oil fuel business in conjunction with existing operations – also collects waste cooking oil from its customer base and forwards this to be processed and used as fuel in trucks. Tougher currently holds a multi-region waste collection permit. The Tougher Oil Group boasts an ongoing partnership to purchase and distribute Shell Lubricants at affordable prices – with quality in mind at all times. The full array of lubricating oil products supplied includes engine oils, universal oils, transmissions, specialised agri products, gear oils greases, horticulture and forestry products and industrial oils.

From modest beginnings, Thomas has developed the Tougher Oil Group into a highly-successful business with the ambition to be at the forefront of customer service. “We’re running a fleet of ten units at the moment,” says Transport Manager Hugo McManus. “We have a modern new depot here in Naas, with bottom- and top-loading and all the latest technology. This represents a huge investment from the directors but it was in the pipeline for a while and is something the Group needed to do. We’ve also upgraded the fleet and we’re in a strong position now, going forward. “We have different-sized units in the fleet – DAFs, Mercedes and a couple of Scanias. We also have our own workshop here and we do all our maintenance inhouse. Obviously, a lot of our work is seasonal but we are kept going all year around and we’re busy at the moment. “In total, between its various operations, the Tougher Oil Group employs 166 people, 26 of whom are employed in transport and distribution. We distribute a full range of road diesel, home heating oil, agricultural products and lubes throughout the greater Leinster area.” What effect, if any, has the recession had on the operation? “Business is back a bit on previous years but you have to get out there and drive it on,” says Hugo. “We’re kept going.” Hugo stresses the importance of keeping versed and up-to-date with all legislation and regulations. Health & Safety is an issue that Tougher Oil Distributors Ltd. takes extremely seriously and it’s an area where they have an IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

outstanding track record. “We have a good working relationship with all the authorities and all the relevant paperwork is in place, the Transport Manager confirms. We also use the latest IT systems on all our tankers. Everything is computerised and there is a constant trail from the cab back to the office.” Things have changed a lot during Hugo’s 30 years as transport manager. He reflects: “There was no ADR or pressure testing or tracking systems back then. Things have changed; we’ve come a long way. Customers have high expectations today, and rightly so. They want professional drivers who are fullytrained and trucks have to be clean and in top working order. You have to project a good image when you are out there. You have to be professional at your game – that’s a minimum requirement.” As for challenges facing the Group,
28
Hugo says: “The cost of fuel has to be the biggest one and can people continue to buy it. We are dong smaller amounts now and more frequent deliveries. There aren’t many people filling up their tanks any more. We realise that people are finding it tough to afford oil and we are prepared to work with them – if anyone has any queries we can put them in touch with
our service engineer to discuss ways of saving fuel etc. We also assist customers by putting budget plans in place for them, which is another new innovation in the industry. “One are of the operation where we see great prospects is in lubricating oil, so we have brought in Jonathan [Coyne] to help us reactivate that area,” Hugo continues. “Everything has

changed in the oil industry, with contracting and civil engineering scaled down, but there are still markets out there that we are pursuing and lubricants is one of them. “The market we are trying to get into would be commercial and industrial – factories and businesses. We have a partnership with Shell and also have our own brand of lubricating oil. Machinery has become so expensive to replace now that owners want to put in a specific hispec oil, which we can provide. And the agricultural sector is a growth area in the economy, which we also service.” Hugo sums up the Tougher Group’s objectives going forward: “We will mainly be focussing on what we have. Obviously, we will continue to look at new opportunities as well but battening down the hatches is a priority and providing our products and services in a cost-effective manner. “You need to keep abreast of the market in terms of what people want and what you are offering, whilst remaining conscious of the economic climate where money is very scarce for a lot of people. We are aware of that and we have to adapt the business accordingly.”

Switch to the SE5000 Exakt. The ‘One Minute Rule’ tacho that’s ahead of the game. For over eight months the SE5000 Exakt has been leading the way, as more and more operators change over to ‘One Minute Rule’ tachographs. Maine Tankers have many years experience
All parts are manufactured by the company
Maine Tankers continue to deliver Ever wonder how tankers are produced, well for this month's edition of Irish Trucker, we take a look at the manufacturing process of these products with the help of Northern Ireland's leading manufacturer Maine Tankers.
T
he production of tankers for the fuel and food industries is a complex one and many years' experience are needed in order to build a reputation for reliability and expertise. To this end, Maine Tankers is the leading manufacturer in the UK and Ireland, having being initially established in 1950 as an oil distribution company. Sydney Gilmore worked hard all his life to build up the reputation of the business and his work ethic is carried on to this day by his son Matthew, who now runs Maine Tankers. The company has added a number of services to its portfolio and not only do they manufacture tankers, but their sister

company justtankerspares.com is an online parts shop that offers a vast selection of genuine tanker parts, cargo pumps and tanker build accessories. Maine Engineering was acquired in 2006 and more recently another branch has been established in Cork city and Liam Sheehan is running this section of the company since the turn of the year. “We would consider ourselves a one-stop shop for tankers whether it be new or second hand tankers or just parts, we have the lot,” said Matthew. “My father, who at 87 still comes into the office for a while every day worked very hard to make the business what it is today and we aim to continue that hard work. “We started off as an oil business, but were always dealing in tankers and just diversified into manufacturing them over the years. In January 2009, we acquired the Irish Van Tanker Spares division of Purfleet Forecourt Services. The business was rebranded to the name Just Tanker Spares a division of Maine Tankers Ltd. “We stock a vast Tankers of all sizes are manufactured selection of genuine

and spurious road tanker parts and oil tanker fittings including; cargo pumps, hoses, pneumatic fittings, electrical spares, flow meters and tanker build accessories. “Just Tankers was set up then and this is the industry's first full e commerce road tanker spares web site. Our aim is to offer superior service and have the parts you need in stock at the keenest prices.” They specialise in the sale of quality oil road tankers and tank semitrailers. Currently in stock they have a selection of Volvo road tankers, DAF road tankers, ERF oil tankers, Scania road tankers, mini tankers and tank semi-trailers. “All of our shipping costs are based on the weight of the item and the total order. Our shopping cart will automatically search for the best courier price for your order depending on your requirements i.e. where the order is to be delivered and how quickly. “We aim to bring the lowest shipping/delivery possible worldwide. All orders over £150 will be delivered free to the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland. For all our other customers our shopping cart will determine the best shipping price available from a selection of couriers.” “Earlier this year we started in Cork and this caters for parts such as hydraulics and PTOs as well as tankers. From our base in Newtownabbey, we manufacture tankers and there are 14 working here.” Matthew revealed that Maine Tankers were ahead of the competition in that no other company can build a tank from scratch. They have also
32
developed their own metering system for fuel tankers that has just been recently EU approved. “We use to have to buy the metering systems elsewhere, but we decided to try and develop our own and I'm delighted with the outcome, which has now acquired EU approval. All components are sourced by ourselves and everything else is manufactured here. “Our customers usually want second hand tankers given the current economic climate and modifications are carried out to necessitate the client's needs. We are also main distributors and have received EU distributions rights for all of Europe.” The tankers are sourced from all over the world and these days the turnaround takes a lot less time than it has done in the past. “Before this the chassis would have to be built and that could take a couple of months alone, however we now have the turnaround time down to around four weeks. There are three main sizes of tanks and we stock all three.” Matthew admits that one of the main focuses in 2012 will be to develop the Cork branch, while ensuring that they continue to deliver the high quality service that their customers have become accustomed to over the years. “Last year we worked on 90 second-hand tankers and hopefully we can surpass that figure this year. We will also be pushing Cork and establishing that some more. “At this time we do feel that we are ahead of our competitors given the service that we provide,

but the important thing now is to stay ahead of them and continue to provide the level of service that we have been doing over the years. “We are also developing fuel semitrailer, while we have a guy working for us in Nottingham and he will be trying to get us more business in the U.K. So all in all we are happy with the direction that the company is heading.”

30 years of excellence Celebrating 30 years as a main Volkswagen dealer, Lahart Garages Ltd. in Kilkenny is a veritable one-stop shop for all commercial vehicle requirements. Boasting state-of-the-art premises and a trusty team of master technicians, Lahart’s is rightly recognised as one of the premier commercial vehicle dealerships in the region. Irish Trucker met sales manager Derek Jordan to reflect on three decades (and counting) of providing complete customer satisfaction.
L
ahart Garages Ltd. has been an authorised Volkswagen car and commercial vehicle dealer since 1982. Ideally located on the main Waterford Road, just off the Ring Road on the outskirts of Kilkenny City, the company has forged an excellent reputation for itself, providing a friendly, efficient and professional service at all times. Offering the full range of VW passenger cars and commercials as well as a selection of pre-owned vehicles (a Skoda dealership was also secured in 2006), Lahart Garages prides itself on a superb aftersales service. All services are carried out to manufacturer specifications by an experienced team of qualified technicians, using the very latest on-line diagnostic technology in a state-of-the-art workshop environment.
34
Lahart Garages also offers a local collection and delivery service, with replacement vehicles made available where and when required at very competitive prices. And to ensure an added personal touch above and beyond the norm, they also offer customers a lift home or to work within the local area. In many ways, Lahart Garages Ltd. is the people’s garage! When drawing up a list of the selling points of Lahart Garages, it quickly became evident that the Kilkenny dealership pretty much ticks all the boxes: world-renowned commercial vehicle franchise; state-of-the-art equipment; excellent staff; modern premises; prime location. Sales manager Derek Jordan notes: “Lahart Garages Ltd. is a family-owned and –run business which was established by Billy Lahart and is now overseen by his son, Denis. We have a longstanding association with Volkswagen and have been IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS
Lahart Garages Ltd in Kilkenny offer a specialist commercial vehicle service
main dealer for Kilkenny city and county for the past 30 years. At present, we employ a total of 35 people. “We sell new and used cars and commercials, with a strong aftersales department, a busy workshop and parts department and we have the main Volkswagen franchise for both cars and commercials, which is a very important part of the business.” VW’s market-leading range of commercial vehicles comprises the Caddy Van, Caddy Life, Transporter, Amarok and Crafter, which is available as a panel van, chassis cab or double chassis cab. The Crafter has many practical features as standard to make the owner’s working day easier, with more than 600 equipment options making it the ideal vehicle for every job. Costs always remain low – the Crafter’s powerful TDI engines are uncompromisingly economical. Long maintenance intervals significantly lower running costs and the Crafter’s high level of reliability avoids expensive downtime. Finally, the topquality workmanship and long service life of Volkswagen vehicles result in a high resale value so the Crafter – like all VW commercials - pays its way throughout its lifetime. On the commercial side of things, Lahart Garages Ltd. is performing very well considering the times that are in it, easily standing toe-to-toe with the competition: “Everyone knows the commercial market IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS
has dropped a lot since the recession kicked in, but it’s becoming buoyant again and the Caddy and Transporter in particular are selling extremely well,” notes Derek. “Both of those were always good-volume sellers but we’ve started to see a marked pick-up in vans in general. “The new Amarok commercial came on the market last year – it’s a two-litre jeep and it’s going very well. It’s the first time Volkswagen have entered that market and it is proving very successful. “Volkswagen commercials are very competitive. Numbers might not be what they used to be but our market share remains very good in Kilkenny city and the surrounding area.” What separates Volkswagen from the competition? “Two things,” replies Derek. “The first one is the resale value; the second is build quality. Volkswagen is synonymous with quality. Volkswagen has a name as a market leader and the quality of their vehicles backs this up. “Our senior technicians would all have gone on to become master technicians and they all have vast experience, having been with the company for a long time. “We built our new premises four years ago and it consists of a state-of-the-art workshop with 14 lifts, new showrooms, an aftersales department and a parts department, all with the latest technology included. We use all the latest diagnostic equipment, computer technology, van lifts, wheel alignment lifts – everything you can think of. “Servicing is the key to a good garage today. You can generate new business with a sale but in order to hold onto that customer you have to provide a good back-up service – especially in the commercial market. When the van is off the road, you have to pull out all the stops to get it back as quickly as possible. You have to have all the parts in stock and you have to get that van up and running. “Luckily, we have a very good level of repeat customers. Volkswagen delivers quality vehicles every time and we have built up a huge customer base, who remain loyal to the business and the Lahart family. “We also offer fleet deals and leasing deals, all done inhouse. We genuinely are a one-stop shop. There’s nothing relating to a car or commercial vehicle that we don’t do. From the moment somebody calls us or walks in to look at a

vehicle, to finance and leasing options, aftersales, replacement vehicles, parts trade-ins etc. “We also have a fleet of parts vans on the road, which can deliver parts to operators’ own garages, and we do pick-ups and deliveries as well.” Looking to the future, the sales manager at Lahart Garages Ltd.
concludes: “Our goals would be to increase our market share, increase our customer data base and to be No.1 in Kilkenny. We have taken on a commercial vehicle specialist and are confident that he will increase our order book so that when things pick up again we are ready to move with the market.”

paramount importance to Michael and only high quality materials are used to ensure maximum strength and longevity. With such robust and superior build quality, it’s not unusual for the company’s box bodies being recycled onto second or third chassis. This highlights the strength and reliability of the initial product, which makes for greater value and less hassle for the customers. Innovative, lightweight bodywork and ‘galv’ sub chassis design ensures maximum payloads without compromising on durability and strength. High gloss GRP exterior skin enhances appearance and doesn’t require painting. Lifford Coachworks cater for vehicles of all sizes, from three-and-a-half tonne to 26 tonne. They refurbish and repair existing bodywork, including panel and tail lift replacement and alignment. The company also carries out repainting and remounting work. Their tail lift suppliers include such reputable names as Dhollandia, Zepro, Dell and Palfinger. To compliment their truck bodies, Lifford Coachworks offer various options such as shelving, racks, meat lifts, air conditioning and all types of access steps. Their bodywork is constantly evolving with new ideas and features being implemented. They also have the capacity to manufacture unique bespoke bodies such as mobile libraries, mobile emergency control units, mobile changing rooms, etc. Lifford Coachworks has come a long way since Michael set up the business at the age of 22 over three decades ago. “I left school at the age of 13 and served my time in the bodybuilding trade before starting out on my own,” he recalls. “It’s an extremely competitive
business, especially at the present time when companies are battling for their survival. Everyone is trying to undercut one another, but at the same time, the customer knows the difference between a good and a bad product and won’t settle for anything less than top quality. “We pride ourselves on the excellent reputation we have built up over the last 35 years. When it comes to quality, value-for-money and a friendly service, we won’t be beaten.” Michael admits it’s a difficult time for the bodybuilding business. “Survival is the main thing,” says Michael, whose 15-strong staff are highly qualified and experienced. Those in the food service industry, who are our main customers, are still purchasing complete new vehicles. “We’re always looking at ways to expand but, if anything, we’ve had to scale back since the recession started. We’ve cut our staff back from 19 to 15. The recession is hitting every business hard, and we’re no exception.” He concludes by saying: “However, regardless of the economic climate, our customers can be guaranteed that we will continue to offer the best service possible.”
A fully finished refrigerated vehicle is always guaranteed

Transtrain: specialists in training Transtrain is a specialist training provider to the road transport industry, where the emphasis is on delivering high quality, realistic, hands on training. We run Occupational First Aid courses, Load Securing courses and ADR dangerous goods courses. Transtrain is a Health and Safety Authority Approved Training Provider for the provision of ADR dangerous goods training. Other than under certain exemptions, drivers of vehicles carrying dangerous goods are required to complete an approved ADR training course and pass the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport examination. Upon successful completion of both, drivers will be issued a Driver Training Certificate which is valid throughout Europe and several other countries, for a period of five years. Based in Askeaton, County Limerick, Transtrain operates at venues Evidence of bad load securing nationwide, or courses can be conducted at customer’s premises. Most drivers attending ADR courses do so because holding an ADR Driver Training Certificate is a legal requirement for them. However, for an increasing number of drivers there is an another reason for attending an ADR course. Not so long ago, a driver who had an HGV licence and little or no experience was virtually guaranteed work. We now live in a very different world, where many drivers are recognising the need to have an advantage over their competition when looking for work by way of additional knowledge, skills and qualifications. If you’re not moving forward, you’re going backwards ! The proprietor, Randall Hughes who came to Ireland eight years ago, is originally from the UK. He has 25 years experience within the road transport industry in a veriety of roles, including driver, foreman driver, HGV driving instructor and HR manager. Prior to becoming envolved in the transport industry, he was an Army Cadet instructor. Drawing on this blend of teaching, training and hands on experience Transtrain is able to offer the highest possible standards of training at very competitive prices. Having taught Battlefield First Aid as an Army Cadet instructor, it was a logical step to move in to teaching Occupational First Aid. Employers have a legal duty to provide adequate first aid facilities and trained staff. Even if not legally required, first aid skills are always beneficial, these are skills that benefit the whole community and can be invaluable to a driver who is the first to arrive at the scene of an accident. Transtrain also provide Load Securing courses nationwide, these are usually conducted at customers premises, using the vehicles, equipment and types of load the customer’s drivers encounter on a daily basis. Transtrain prides itself on working with the customer to identify their exact training needs and designing tailor-made courses, based around each cutomer’s operations. Sadly, most employers believe that if a driver has been taught to drive a truck, they have also been taught how to load it. That is simply not the case ! The spiraling cost of Goods in Transit Insurance and claims for damaged goods, coupled with a shift in attitudes in relation to corporate liability and accountablility for accidents has led to a growing demand for this course, although judging by how frequently vehicles with poor or non-existant load restraint can be seen out on the road, much improvement is still needed. Transtrain is dedicated to meeting the training needs of the road transport industry and individuals alike, who are seeking the required knowledge and expertise necessary in todays ultra-competetive industry

According to a Letter of Intent, Scania, from 2014, will not only supply engines for Doosan’s articulated dump trucks and large wheel loaders but also other products within the Doosan range. “In the long term, we are estimating delivery of well over 3,000 engines annually to Doosan Infracore. This cooperation has strengthened our position in the growing Asian market,” says Robert Sobocki, Senior Vice President and Head of Scania Engines. Doosan Infracore is well positioned within the Chinese market. Several models from a total of over 20,000 machines sold annually in China will be powered by Scania engines. “We have tested Scania’s engines in our products and they meet our expectations for reliability, outstanding performance and high fuel efficiency. Run your mini digger legally with a 5.5T Machinery Carrier It’s fair to say that falling foul off the law when towing a trailer is something we want to avoid at all costs. However, a clamp down in UK and Irish legislation suggests that many truck operators are finding the trailers they once used for transporting mini diggers and other small equipment are becoming increasingly ineffective. To meet legislation for towing plant and machinery exceeding 3,500kg, the trailer used must fall into large goods vehicle status and be fitted with ABS and air brakes. To address this legislation, leading trailer manufacturer McCauley Trailers has developed a lightweight and versatile trailer that is able to carry most types of mini digger legally. Specifically designed for the transportation of smaller plant, the MAC 5.5T Machinery Carrier has a low payload yet is capable of carrying up to 5,500kg gross. The trailer gains large goods vehicle status yet is compact in size (4.2m long x 2.5m wide); making it ideal for towing small equipment without the need for a large cumbersome trailer. Sales and Marketing Coordinator Assumpta O’Neill comments: “We have been manufacturing the MAC 5.5T Machinery Carrier for a number of years and have recently seen a rise in enquiries for these trailers due to the enforcement of legislation in the UK and Ireland. Many firms, particularly those in the utilities and civil engineering sectors, who previously used McCauley Trailers have developed the MAC smaller and lighter trailers, are now turning to MAC as our trailers comply 5.5T to meet legislation with all relative legislation.” McCauley Trailers have supplied the MAC 5.5T Machinery Carrier to the DOE Road Service and Northern Ireland Water in the past. More recently, they are the chosen supplier for leading utilities company KPL Contracts: “Not only are we now free from risk of penalties from the DOE for running without ABS or Air brakes, the MAC 5.5T Machinery Carrier is much more durable than the galvanised jeep trailers we previously used. Towing these plant trailers behind our lorries at highway speeds meant that very often the axles and wheels did not last more than 1 year. However, with MAC’s commercial axles, larger wheels and heavy construction, the trailers will last well over 8 years, with only a yearly service required. This means that although there was a slightly higher capital outlay in buying these trailers compared to our old galvanised ones, the initial outlay is recuperated within 2 years” stated Conor Lynch, KPL Contracts. MAC 5.5T Machinery Carriers come with a high specification as standard and are fully equipped with ADR axles, air brakes with EBS, heavy duty mudguards, DOE approved lights, adjustable towing eye and spring assisted ramps as standard. As with all MAC Trailers, a full list of optional extras is available to suit individual operator requirements. For more information on the MAC 5.5T Machinery Carrier visit www.mccauleys.co.uk or contact McCauley Trailers on 028 7965 9191.

New safety tests for buses & lorries Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Leo Varadkar is publishing new laws to overhaul the testing regime for commercial vehicles such as buses and lorries. The Road Safety (Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness) Bill 2012, passed by Cabinet this week, proposes new spot checks for testing centres and random roadside checks for light and heavy goods vehicles, and buses and coaches. For the first time, commercial vehicle testing centres across the country will have to comply with a uniform nationwide standard, which will be enforced by the Road Safety Authority (RSA). The transfer of this responsibility from local authorities to the RSA will save in the region of €4.5 million. This matter was prioritised by Minister Varadkar when he took office, and testing staff have already been transferred to the RSA. The new testing regime is due to be launched this summer. “Our priority with this Bill is to ensure the safety of passengers, drivers and all road users. We want to ensure that the same standards are being applied right across the country, no matter where the vehicle is being tested. That’s why the new system will be more consistent, impartial and accurate,” Minister Varadkar said. In Ireland, around one in five fatal collisions involve commercial vehicles, yet the existing system has been largely unchanged since 1982. The Bill was drafted to take into account key recommendations from a review of the bus crashes in Kentstown, Co. Meath and Clara, Co. Offaly. The Bill proposes that the RSA will take over centralised supervision and licensing of private testing centres for commercial vehicles. There will also be a new roadside inspections programme to ensure continuous compliance with roadworthiness standards, including random checks of vehicles. The new system will also include random checks of operator premises, and intelligence-led targeting of operators based on risk, including a ‘Risk Register’ of operators. There will also be a more robust legislative framework for CVR testing. The new legislation will mean that roadside enforcement, checks of operators’ fleet and maintenance records, as well as the annual roadworthiness test will be linked in a single integrated system for the first time. Resources will be targeted at vehicle operators considered most likely to break the law, while continuing to supervise those with a good track record in maintaining vehicle standards. It will create a level playing pitch by ensuring that vehicle operators who maintain their fleet are not put at a disadvantage by those who break the law.

Award-winning Ships: Summer debut on Irish Sea for “Seatruck Precision” Seatruck Precision
Seatruck Precision, the final vessel in Seatruck’s series of four new ro-ro freight vessels, was launched at FSG Flensburg Yard, Germany, on Friday March 23. The new ferry was named by Mrs Lynn McBurney, wife of Seatruck customer Norman McBurney, founder of McBurney Transport - one of Ireland’s largest independent haulage In June, Seatruck Precision will join her three sisters on Seatruck’s unaccompanied freight routes across the Irish Sea. The first newbuilding, Seatruck Progress, now operates on the busy Liverpool – Dublin route. The second, Seatruck Power, joined this route last month (February). The third newbuilding, Seatruck Performance, was launched in January and will begin operating the Irish Sea route in April. Seatruck now has 70 sailings weekly on four routes: Liverpool – Dublin, Heysham – Dublin, Heysham – Warrenpoint and Heysham – Larne. The popularity of Seatruck’s unaccompanied trailer services continues to grow. Its Irish Sea volume rose by 58 per cent last year, to over Alistair Eagles is Seatruck’s Managing Director, Irish Sea. He says: “Seatruck Progress and Seatruck Power have had a huge impact on our popular Liverpool - Dublin route. The extra capacity is already utilised on many sailings, as more operators come to appreciate their opportunity to reduce mileage, by using Liverpool rather than transiting through Wales.” One of Seatruck’s new FSG vessels recently received the Hansa Ship of the Year Award 2011. In making this award, Hansa Magazine recognised the unique design qualities of these ferries, naming Seatruck Progress as the most innovative vessel built in Germany in 2011. Seatruck Progress was described as the first of a quartet of very compact and energyefficient vessels, each with a capacity of up to 151 trailers. Fuel economy is a major feature of the new ships, with fuel consumption as much as 30 per cent lower than that of other designs. Alistair Eagles adds: “Our new FSG vessels are the key to Seatruck’s continued progress in the Irish Sea. Our unaccompanied trailer model continues to gain ground. With some months of operational experience with the new vessels now in hand, I can say that we are extremely pleased with them.”
Five firms going bust a day: survey Figures have been released showing that five firms a day are going bust. Vision net carried out the survey which revealed that almost 150 companies were declared insolvent last month, which was an increase of 5% from the previous year. Truckers driving on Class A drugs to ’relieve boredom’ A culture of Class A drug taking is common among some drivers working in the UK road haulage business, say industry insiders. Truck drivers are resorting to cocaine, speed and ecstasy to help keep themselves awake on long journeys. Drug testing firms say to have 10% of drivers in an haulage firm test positive for drugs was "not unusual". One lorry driver speaking to the BBC's 5 live Investigates programme, who works for a major international haulage company, claims he regularly sees drivers use ecstasy, cannabis, speed and cocaine to relieve the boredom of lengthy shifts. The highly experienced driver has tried to raise the issue with managers at his firm but says nobody wants to take responsibility and tries to pass the buck to another department. The driver, who spoke anonymously, says fellow drivers have in the past veered off motorways or overturned, and in some instances were not even able to remember the incident afterwards.

Haulier’s arm reattached after workplace accident Surgeons at Cork University Hospital have successfully reattached a man’s arm after it was cut off in a recent workplace accident in Limerick. John Dineen, a livestock road haulage contractor, was loading animal feed from a conveyor machine into a truck when one of his arms was severed from below the elbow at Dan O’Connor Feeds, Ballysimon Road, Limerick. Jerry Clifford, general manager of the plant, said the accident was shocking and regretful, but they were delighted to hear the man’s arm had been reattached and that he was making good progress following surgery. A Garda spokesman said Mr Dineen’s arm was retrieved from the conveyer machine and that a tourniquet was applied to stem blood loss. The Garda and Health and Safety Authority are investigating.

Easytrip Trans Europe also ensures that customers have no foreign language difficulties to deal with, no need to provide local banking guarantees in different countries, plus there’s the major advantage of paying tolls all the way to the Russian border, through the one Easytrip account,” Dermot MacEvilly added. Easytrip Trans Europe is currently running a special promotion for business customers who sign up for the new service by May 11th, where one customer, plus a partner could win a trip to watch Ireland play Spain in Gdansk on June 14th. Boniface keeping up the pace The recovery business is a global industry which is needed all around the world from the UK and the rest of Europe to the Middle East and beyond. However, to build recovery equipment is becoming increasingly challenging for body builders as they have to comply with more and more European legislation and directives. The challenge in particular facing UK recovery body builders encounter is to drive developments forward on the one hand, and to comply with European and local regulations on the other hand. Boniface Engineering is the leading UK recovery equipment body builder who has been able to combine this challenge successfully over the years. Boniface Engineering has successfully sold equipment into most European countries and worldwide. For example, Boniface have made recent sales to Germany, Norway, Sweden and Finland as well as Afghanistan and Kuwait. Mike Boniface, Managing Director of Boniface Engineering believes that "this is possible through a first class local distribution network and a strong after sales service which gives customers the confidence that they will, and have, received a good service over many years". In every country in Europe customers are used to different kinds of equipment and body styles. For example, in Germany customers prefer the Interstater with a high and practical body style, whereas in Finland customers prefer the Recoverer Trident with an aluminium quality body for a good price. Boniface Engineering is able to cater to it's customers' different demands and needs and hence provide a first class service. Over the last 10 years UK developments have driven into Europe such as the Euro Champion slidebed which provides an aluminium sliding platform perfected to deliver the durability and strength that is needed to do the job but at the same time is able to give a high payload. Also the Rotator range, especially the Century Rotator 1140, which gives maximum flexibility with minimum kerb weight, has proven successful across Europe. Boniface Engineering will be presenting the above-mentioned products and many more at all the major recovery shows in Europe this year.

Roads improving according to survey An online survey carried out by the AA shows that damage to cars as a result of potholes are down on last year. The poll of more than 20,000 people shows that 11% said that they have sustained damage to their vehicle since the start of the year having hit a pothole. However, this is compared to a figure of 16% during the same period last year. AA Ireland said that the drop in figures is due to a mild winter. During the "big freeze" of 2010, roads across the country were badly damaged by the icy conditions.

Further expansion for The Mansfield Group As part of their extensive expansion programme for 2012, this great looking DAF is just one of several new Boniface vehicles destined for The Mansfield Group’s new depot in Derby. UK Mega-trucks on hold At a recent European Parliament Transport Committee meeting, EC transport commissioner Siim Kallas was forced to rethink his proposals for a re-interpretation of the European rules to allow mega-trucks to cross the borders of consenting countries. For UK campaigners, the news means a delay to the possibility of mega-trucks arriving on British roads. At the moment, countries can only allow larger HGVs – those which do not comply with existing international regulations – to operate within their own borders. Campaigners say allowing cross-border traffic of mega-trucks would mean that 25metre, 60-tonne vehicles could, in time, come to the UK, as the road haulage industry would claim it was being unfairly discriminated against without them. Freight on Rail Manager Philippa Edmunds said: “While the UK government says it will not allow megatrucks on UK roads, the danger is that if European law changes to allow it, the government will come under increased pressure from the powerful UK haulage industry to let them operate similar sized vehicles here. “The UK government has already shown it buckles under industry pressure, when it allowed a 10-year trial of 7ft-longer lorries, so our worries are well founded.” Currently in the UK, the vast majority of trucks are 16.5 metres long, with around 2% at 18.75 metres; but all have a weight limit of 44 tonnes. So called mega-trucks, which would be 50% longer and one-third heavier, already operate in Sweden, Finland, Denmark and the Netherlands. Edmunds added: “The commissioner stated as recently as December 2011 that cross-border traffic of mega-trucks was illegal, and that research was not robust enough yet to make a judgment on their impact.” She said research suggested mega-trucks pose increased dangers due to their size and lack of manoeuvrability. “Rail freight, which is safer than road, would be severely undermined by this policy change which would see trainloads of freight returning to the roads,” added Edmunds.

Commercial vehicle sales steady The number of commercial vehicles registered in Ireland last month remained steady, according to figures released by the Central Statistics Office. Compared to the same period last year, there was a slight drop of only 2%. The total number of goods vehicles licensed in March, 2012 was 1,155 – compared to 1,179 last March. The figure is encouraging considering that the number of new passenger cars licensed in Ireland for the same period fell by 14.6%, from 12,390 to 10,581. The overall drop – including all types of vehicles - was 11.1%. But the commercial sector appears to be holding its own, albeit starting from a pretty low base. IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS
