New standard for crash repairers in Ireland
Vehicle Body Repairers from across Ireland were today awarded with a new standard called CSS (Certified Steel Standard). CSS is a national accreditation mark which offers consumers assurance that structural vehicle body repairs have been carried out to the highest possible standard. Setup by the SIMI (Society of First 38 National the Irish Motor Industry) CSS Bodyshops launch CSS was established because of the increasing complexity of the makeup of cars and the level of expertise that is required to repair them. CSS reassures consumers that specific repairers have the ability to structurally repair vehicles to the highest standard. Paul Linders, President of SIMI: “Customers deserve the best service and the best standard of repairs when they experience the trauma of a crash repair. When a vehicle is involved in a serious crash or accident it doesn’t necessarily have to be written- off, that vehicle can be repaired to a high standard and returned to the road in a safe condition. What is important though is that you can be sure it has been properly/correctly repaired before it is returned to the road and that is where CSS comes in." At the presentation of the CSS accreditation to 38 bodyshops, Mr Linders said: “These bodyshops should be proud of their accomplishment. Their willingness to raise the standard of repairs within the Industry demonstrates the passion and pride they have in their personnel and their business and most importantly in their ability to repair crashed vehicles safely and to the highest quality. He also commended the efforts of the RSA for their continued focus on road safety and welcomed their plans to introduce regulations for statutory reporting of write-offs and the requirements for significant repairs to be certified or recorded prior to a seriously damaged vehicle being allowed back on the road. “It is time to implement these requirements for the benefit of consumers and road users. We strongly support this RSA initiative and we would see CSS playing a key part of this process. “
Paddy’s been to the moon and back

Environmental fines increased
Environmental offences will be met with heavy fines in the U.K after new legislation was passed recently. Fines of up to £3 million can be imposed on guilty parties and it covers offences such as fly-tipping and waste crimes such as illegal waste handling or disposal offences. The new guidelines will come into effect on 1st July. “The new Sentencing Council Guidelines for Environmental Offences completely changes the face of environmental regulation,” said Simon Colvin, environmental partner at national law firm Weightmans LLP. “The new guidelines are likely to result in a greater focus on environmental compliance at boardroom level since the downsides of getting it wrong are so significant, and prolonged and hard fought environmental cases since the consequences of being found guilty and the scope of the offences are so much more significant.”
Good news for transport sector
Transport prices have shown a slight recovery as the price index for European road transport rates has improved by 1.2 per cent in Q4 2013 compared to Q3, up 3.1 per cent on the same period last year. In Q4 the capacity index was down by 3.1 per cent, and the diesel index too was down by 2.3 per cent compared to Q3 2013. Transporeon and Capgemini said in their Transport Market Monitor: “Both market dynamics and lasting economic uncertainties emphasize the need to monitor transport price developments very closely, to mitigate the risk of any unexpected negative impact on company results.”

Engineering jobs boost for NI
Northern Ireland is to benefit from a Swedish company’s decision to relocate. Over 160 jobs will be created by Sandvik Construction as it transfers manufacturing work from its plant in England. The company makes crushing and screening equipment that is used in the mining and quarrying industries. It is reorganising its UK operations, which involves cutting 360 jobs from its plant in Swadlincote, Derbyshire. The company has said it is moving 160 of those jobs to its production site in Ballygawley, County Tyrone. Northern Ireland's Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster said the move was a "tremendous endorsement" of the staff and management at the Ballygawley site. "The fact that the company has chosen Ballygawley as its sole production site is positive news for Northern Ireland and it will allow us to continue to build on our already strong reputation in this sector," she said. The minister added: "The decision obviously impacts those who are currently employed at the Derbyshire facility and I know the company is currently in discussions with those who will be affected to ensure they have access to a wide range of support measures." Sandvik's managing director, Terry Allison, said "Since the major downturn in 2008/9, the global market for our products has not recovered as fast as we had hoped. "We are currently running two factories at 50% capacity. This is neither efficient nor sustainable. In order to stay competitive, we propose moving all our production onto the Ballygawley site, which is the right size to meet both the current and anticipated demand for our mobile crushers and screeners," he added.

Oil exploration decision expected
Exploration companies have been employed by the Irish government to find oil and gas reserves in the country. Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Pat Rabbitte stated that as the Government hadn’t the money to invest in well drilling, employing exploration companies was the way to go. Under existing terms, the Government stands to earn 25%-40% of profits of such exploration, depending on the scale of the find. However, a Dáil committee has recommended higher taxes for future licences. Mr Rabbitte said the State does not have the money to invest in drilling wells, so it has to bring in big exploration companies. However, he said there is a balance between being able to attract the companies and on the other hand not having a fiscal regime that repels them. IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

New height limits would include haulage of fodder
It is understood Minister for Transport, Leo Varadkar, has agreed to a proposal to allow a derogation from vehicle height restrictions for the haulage of hay and straw. In response to a recent Dail question, Minister Varadkar confirmed he has asked his officials to draft regulations to allow for a narrow exemption for the haulage of agricultural fodder from the height limits brought in by the 2008 regulations. “This is an issue I first raised with Minister Varadkar back in October when the implications of the changes being introduced were highlighted by very concerned hauliers and farmers in Co Kildare, stated Deputy Martin Heydon. Following discussions with my Dáil colleagues I became aware that this was also an issue in other parts of the country as well as for farmers in the West who rely on the hay and straw being transported to them. “I brought a delegation of hauliers from Kildare to meet Minister Varadkar in November and he took on board the specific concerns they raised with him.” The new restrictions, which became active last November, were signed into law by Minister Varadkar’s predecessor Minister Noel Dempsey in 2008 and allowed for a five-year washout period.

LD Lines delivers savings to haulage industry
Ferry operator LD Lines’ can now provide the haulage industry with cost-saving advantages following the introduction of its new services connecting Ireland - France – Spain and two new routes linking the UK and Northern Spain. The Rosslare – St.Nazaire (Montoir) on the West coast of France – Gijón route is the first-ever ferry service between the three countries and best reflects reduced costs, combined with shorter drive times and environmental benefits. Comparisons of the new ferry service versus travelling overland are significant : Overland mileage from Rosslare to Gijón is 1260 miles which equates to a fuel cost of around £750 ; include cost of ferry crossing up to £500 gives a total of £1250 ; By LD Lines’ ferry service crossing times from Rosslare to St.Nazaire (Montoir) and on to Gijón, of 22 and 16 hours respectively, paying an average price freight rate, can offer savings of around £250, but importantly provide drivers with an essential rest period, in preparation for driving from the ports to onward European destinations. Overland mileage from Rosslare to St.Nazaire (Montoir) is 755 miles which equates to a fuel cost of around £430 ; include cost of ferry crossing up to £500 gives a total of £930. Driving time is on average 13 hours, but drivers stipulated rest time is eight hours. Even with differing freight rates for customers, cost savings will be made and drivers will be reducing drive times by over 20 hours by taking LD Lines’ Rossalre – St.Nazaire (Montoir) service, arriving refreshed for the miles ahead on the continental road networks. Bypassing the UK landbridge is also a major advantage to and from the continental mainland. In addition the port of St.Nazaire (Montoir) is better located for France bound freight traffic, with good connections to the entire French motorway network, than other ferry connections between Ireland and regions of France such as Normandy and Brittany. Hauliers choosing LD Lines’ direct new UK-Spain routes between Poole – Gijón/Santander, with crossing times of 25 and 26 hours respectively, also gives drivers important rest periods, good access on arrival in Northern Spain and, particularly from the port of Gijón, excellent connections to the Spanish motorway network including the A-66 to Seville. Example drive times are Gijón – Madrid seven hours 30 minutes ; Gijón – Valladolid four hours and into Portugal, Gijón – Porto nine hours. “We have identified a real demand from the haulage industry to provide services that link Ireland, France and Spain and the UK and Spain and these new ferry connections clearly gives the freight market greater choice, combined with financial and operational advantages,” says Christophe Santoni, LD Lines’ CEO. Freight drivers are also offered an inclusive fare which combines ferry crossings with cabin and meals on board. LD Lines’ new services are operated by a combination of sister ships the Norman Asturias and Norman Atlantic providing identical capacity and on board facilities. Light and heavy commercial sales both up
The light commercial vehicle market, which is a good sign of activity in the SME sector, saw an increase in sales of 41% in February with sales of Heavy Goods Vehicles, often a barometer of activity in the wider Economy, seeing a 68% increase. Figures just released by the SIMI (Society of the Irish Motor Industry) show that so far this year, new car sales are up by 28%. The confidence evident in January has continued into February with a 21% increase in car sales. Alan Nolan, SIMI Director General: "The Motor Industry is often the first to be affected when there's a downturn and one of the first to come back when the economy improves. Dealers are undoubtedly seeing a lot more confidence among consumers, many of whom have been putting off making large purchases over the last few years. "Feedback from dealers confirms that footfall and sales enquiries are holding up well and there is no doubt that it’s the return of consumers to the market, as opposed to business purchasers, that is fuelling the increased business. Better availability of finance for creditworthy consumers combined with improved consumer confidence have helped make this a very good start to 2014 for the Industry. "As a result, employment in the sector has also been stabilising and February saw the formation of 37 new companies in the Motor Industry in February." IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Greenstar announces completion of acquisition by Affiliate of Cerberus Capital Management, L.P.
Immediate investments in waste infrastructure planned Greenstar, Ireland’s largest waste management firm, today announced the completion of the acquisition of substantially all of its assets by an affiliate of Cerberus Capital Management, L.P. (“Cerberus”), one of the world's leading private investment firms. Greenstar was in receivership since August 2012. Mark Keough, the newly appointed CEO of Greenstar said, “Today marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Greenstar business. The company has emerged from receivership debt-free, with a strong balance sheet, over 85,000 customers and 700 team members. We are grateful to our customers, our employees and our suppliers, who have stood by the company through a difficult period, under the able guidance of the Receiver, David Carson and his team at Deloitte. With the backing of our new shareholder, Cerberus, we are keen to re-assert Greenstar’s position as a trusted provider of sustainable waste management in Ireland.” Greenstar plans to focus its efforts on upgrading its collection infrastructure, expanding its production of alternative fuels, and growing its renewable energy division, which converts methane gas to electricity for the EirGrid transmission network, accounting for about 28% of the total bio-renewable energy in Ireland. Liam Strong, Chief Executive of Cerberus European Capital Advisors, and the new Chairman of Greenstar, said, “Cerberus sees great potential in Greenstar. We are making an investment not just in waste management, but also in Ireland. Cerberus has a long record in re-capitalising and providing operational support to companies that are important to their customers and other constituents and can benefit from improved business performance. We look forward to supporting Greenstar’s resurgence as a waste-to-energy leader.” Ron Bolger, Principal of Dublin-based Ely Capital and Vice Chairman of Greenstar, said, “David Carson and the Environmental Protection Agency deserve considerable credit for the completion of this transaction and Greenstar’s successful emergence from receivership. With the support of Cerberus, Greenstar is well positioned to meet the demand for waste management in a recovering Irish economy.” Mr Keough was appointed CEO by Greenstar’s new Board when the transaction closed. Previously he was a Director at Montagu Private Equity Associates LLP in London, and prior to that he was a partner with McKinsey & Company. In addition to Mr. Keough, the senior management team at Greenstar will consist of Jerry Dempsey (Commercial), Chris Bell (CFO), Declan O’Reilly (Dublin Region Operations), Aidan Shanahan (National Region Operations), and Donal Monahan (Recycling and Recovery).
Motor industry celebrates upturn in market at its 61st annual dinner The SIMI (Society of the Irish Motor Industry’s) held its 61st annual dinner at the Doubletree by Hilton hotel in Dublin on Friday with 600 Motor Industry guests in attendance. Addressing the audience, SIMI President Paul Linders spoke about the upturn in the Motor Industry: “In all of our mindsets, our offices and our showrooms let's be clear , the recession is over. While we haven’t actually yet recovered we are recovering.” “In the past year alone, 310 new businesses have been formed in our Industry and add to that credit must be given to all of you who have, despite the stormy weather, diversified and innovated to change with the times and to keep your own staff in employment.” He did note however that the industry is still some way off a ‘normal’ market: “We may be beginning to see green buds coming through, but we're way off seeing a full bloom.” “Even though we're not predicting a brilliant year for car sales this year, something unexpected has happened in the market this year; customers are back. As of today, car sales are up 32%, heavy commercials are up 41% and light commercials up 45%.” He also spoke about the importance of available credit to stabilise the market: “At Industry gatherings these days I am hearing much more stories about recruitment than redundancy and where we used to only speak of the lack of credit we now hear of newly established finance houses joining or even rejoining the marketplace.” On the same night, the 2014 SIMI Irish Motor Industry Awards in association with Castrol were held.

£700,000 deal for Belfast catalytic converter firm
Catagen has netted a £700k deal after having one of its models snapped up by a US firm. Using patented technology, Catagen initially produced two small products for the automotive industry – Labcat and Testcat. But its larger Maxcat model, which is capable of testing four catalyst assemblies at once, has caught the attention of US company MAHLE. The first Maxcat machine has been completed and will soon be installed in the USA at the Michigan facility of MAHLE Powertrain. MAHLE is a global manufacturer of components and systems for the internal combustion engine as well as vehicle air conditioning and engine cooling. Catagen cofounder and chief executive, Dr Andrew Woods, says automotive companies need to conduct extensive testing and verification on new and aged catalysts to verify that emission regulations will be met throughout the typical life of a vehicle. "The development of Maxcat is a really significant moment for Catagen and the future of catalyst testing," he told The Belfast Telegraph. "The industry now has a viable, full-size, much more environmentally friendly alternative method to age and test catalysts." IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Don’t journey to the Dark Side
Dark roads ... dark wet roads… dark wet foggy roads. These are not places to stop a vehicle and yet we often have to. With your vehicle parked in the dark, other road users will not expect it to be there. These are often road users in a hurry and the last thing you need is one embedded in your van doors - very costly and frustrating to have a commercial vehicle off the road. The roads are full of things that aren’t moving or not moving very quickly. Everything from highway maintenance to hedgehogs! Chevronshop.com don’t currently stock high visibility markings for hedgehogs – they’ll just have to run faster. They do however supply markings for almost everything else using their extensive vehicle database, which means you can take your time and get whatever work you need to do, done safely. Get your vehicles fitted with high visibility conspicuity markings and substantially reduce the risk of that accident. Other drivers can see the danger earlier and brake earlier. This makes real sense, especially at this time of year on roads that become more congested every day. Chevronshop.com supply marking kits to fit to your vehicles that will allow them to be seen day or night from a considerable distance. These can be ordered quickly online via their website www.chevronshop.com and will be manufactured and despatched to you within 48 hours. Fitting is straightforward as the markings are cut to specific vehicle templates to ensure accuracy. Their marking kits use a base layer system where the second colour is applied over the top of the primary, eliminating any alignment issues between the two colours. They can fit these for you if required – just call their Helpline on 0800 9998997. With their vehicle database and fast despatch, crash repairs can be completed quicker. The ease with which markings can be fitted and removed, and the expert advice available continues to attract an increasing number of customers keen to keep vehicles on the road without costly delay. Lack of awareness and understanding of legislation such as ECE104 and UK Chapter 8 regulations, can often mean that operators are not aware that their vehicles are non-compliant. Visit www.chevronshop.com for expert advice. Chevronshop.com will have a stand at the Commercial Vehicle Show at NEC Birmingham (April 28- May1). Call in and get information and advice.
High Visibility Markings - Should you Comply?
Vehicle operators have a duty of care to reduce risk to employees, the public and other road users. The fitting of correct markings is strongly advised from the point of view of safety and they also present a professional, responsible company image. All fleet operators should be aware of legislation (ECE104), implementation of which is now regularly checked by highway authorities. There are increasing instances where incorrectly or non marked vehicles are being refused entry to building sites by Health and Safety Officers. Chevronshop.com can ensure your vehicles meet requirements before they are refused site access. They can provide advice on the often complex industry legislation governing vehicle conspicuosity, and have considerable experience with conspicuity marking from over six years as a manufacturer/supplier and from their sister company Bluelite Graphics who supply Police, Fire and Ambulance services in the UK and Worldwide. Commercial Conspicuity Checklist – how do you rate? Here are just a few of the standards covering commercial fleets: • 50mm fluorescent yellow, amber or red reflective (depending on position) striping is now recommended. • Any works vehicles that are used to protect the workforce should be of conspicuous colour and carry appropriate markings. • On high-speed roads, all vehicles stopping on the highway for works purposes should carry high visibility rear markings, including chevrons comprising alternate strips of fluorescent orange-red retroreflective material and fluorescent yellow non-retroreflective material. • Markings should cover as much of the rear-facing portion of a vehicle as possible without obscuring windows, vehicle lighting or registration plates. • Red retroreflective tape should also be applied to all rear facing edges of open doors, guardrails and equipment lockers.
The rules, regulations and guidance governing the visibility of vehicles working on European highways can be confusing… and that’s why increasing numbers of fleet managers are turning to Chevronshop.com for expert advice and support. Along with the incoming ECE104, these requirements are captured in the Chapter 8 regulations of the Traffic Signs Manual published by the UK Department for Transport – and they now include a standard for fitting reflective side markings. www.chevronshop.com Tel: 0800 9998997

Kilsaran, Dungarvan Transport, Noone Transport & Carna Transport all opt for Actros
Ireland’s largest producer and distributor of concrete products, Dunboyne-based Kilsaran, recently took delivery of its first ever Mercedes-Benz trucks - four Actros tractor units, finished in a distinctive, newly designed, eye-catching silver livery with the Kilsaran trademark displayed on the cab. Supplied by MUTEC, the 2545 Actros 6x2 tractor units will run at 46 tonnes and will be put to work distributing their Paving and Walling products between Kilsaran’s headquarters in Dunboyne and its customers across the country. Founded in 1964, Kilsaran celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and continues to be a family-owned business. A member of the Guaranteed Irish family of brands and known to produce the largest selection of quality construction products in Europe, Kilsaran employs over 200 staff in Ireland and operates sixteen nationwide production facilities. Commenting, MUTEC Truck Specialist, Colm Kennedy said "MercedesBenz and MUTEC is proud to introduce these trucks to such a high profile customer, knowing the reputation the Actros has gained as a fuel efficient, environmentally-friendly, high-spec, long distance truck which has proven itself as the ‘truck of choice’ amongst many of the country’s most prominent fleet operators". Dungarvan Transport increased the number of Mercedes-Benz Actros trucks in its fleet to 12 with the recent addition of four new Actros 2545 models. Supplied by Mercedes-Benz commercials dealer Surehaul of Clonmel of which Dungarvan Transport is a long-standing customer, the new trucks are wrapped in the company’s distinctive blue livery and will soon be seen on Irish roads. Dungarvan Transport has been at the forefront of Irish and international haulage for over 30 years and has expanded its operations to handle a diverse range of freight for both Irish and international clients. Commenting, Surehaul's sales manager Mark O'Connor said, 'we are delighted that Dungarvan Transport has continued to add to Noone Transport Actros it’s existing fleet of Mercedes-Benz trucks. It’s a 1845LS tractor units great endorsement to see them returning for more, having received the first two MP4 trucks we delivered back in July 2012. We look forward to continuing this success with our new class leading fuel efficient Euro 6 engines'. Slane-based haulage firm Noone Transport has strengthened its fleet of 31 articulated trucks with the addition of its first ever Mercedes-Benz trucks - two Actros 1845LS tractor units, finished in the company’s distinctive, white and red livery. Their chosen Actros feature a 2.5m Bigspace cab, flat floor, air conditioning, night heater, fridge and additional roof pod air conditioning for use when the vehicle is stationary. Founded in 1986 in Duleek, Noone Transport’s headquarters has been in Slane since 2001. Coupled with a dedicated national transport service, the company provides a full and part-load continental service on both ambient and temperature controlled trailers, covering all of Europe. Commenting, MercedesBenz commercial vehicles sales manager, Fergus Conheady said "Mercedes-Benz is delighted to introduce these trucks to a new customer, knowing the Actros has proven itself as the ‘truck of choice’ amongst many of the Ireland’s most wellknown fleet operators". Renowned Northern Ireland haulage firm Carna Transport has taken delivery of three new Actros 1845 tractor units. The Co Armagh based refrigerated and dry freight transport company opted for the Actros ahead of another unnamed manufacturer after they held a series of fuel-efficiency trials. Carna general manager Robert Heavin explains that both tractors were sent on continental haulage runs at up to 40 tonnes gcw over several weeks, and the New Actros came out on top by a clear margin, with an average return of 11.4 mpg. Powered by Mercedes-Benz 449bhp straight-six engines mated to the OEM's predictive powertrain control (PPC) technology, all of the tractors were alos specified with flat-floored GigaSpace cabs and equipped with Daimler FleetBoard telematics hardware. "Our decision to invest in these vehicles was very much influenced by the excellent fuel returns we achieved with the demonstrator," comments Heavin. "But that's not all we looked at. Our trucks travel as far afield as Romania and Sicily, so we also place a high priority on effective back-up and comfortable, spacious cabs," he continues. "Mercedes-Benz offers 24-hour assistance across Europe, while the GigaSpace cabs are very well designed, with masses of storage space and a real quality feel."

Ireland’s first Renault Trucks Range Ts deliver for BM Transport

The Range T460.26 TML E6 tractor units, purchased outright through local Renault Trucks dealer, Joe Curran Commercials, are additions to BM Transport’s growing fleet of 50 trucks and over 120 trailers. A key factor in BM Transport’s purchase decision was the excellent track record of the company’s 19 Renault Premiums and the fuel economy potential of the new Range Ts. The Range Ts, which went on the road in February and will cover 180,000km per year, undertake general haulage across Ireland and the UK using a variety of equipment including euroliners, flat trailers and box vans. The freight arm of Ireland’s biggest independent delivery firm has rounded off a remarkable first year of success by aiming to double the size of its business by 2017. Nightline International has made the bold growth forecast after a dramatic 12 months following its formation as part of a restructure of the Nightline Logistics Group. Managing Director John Quinn has claimed that solid foundations for long-term success have already been laid over the course of a year which saw the company built almost from scratch and generate significant sales both at home and abroad. “It has been a year constant development and quite amazing growth, all of which has flowed from a desire to put the right structures in place throughout the business. “We have been selective in our recruitment and in the relationships which we have struck with partners across Ireland, the UK, Europe and much further afield. “To predict a doubling in size so soon after being set up might sound ambitious but I believe that we have the capacity and the capability to sustain the growth which we have seen already and meet our targets.” Nightline International came into its own as part of a restructure last year which its parent company saw as the latest stage in the evolution of a brand formed in 1992. Along with Nightline International, the new Nightline Logistics Group now comprises its parcel division Nightline Delivers, the hugely successful locker network Parcel Motel, a warehousing subsidiary, Nightline Logistics, and the business post specialist Eirpost. Once Mr Quinn – who has amassed more than three decades’ experience in logistics - was appointed as MD, he immediately began constructing the fabric and direction of Nightline International. It now boasts a staff of 18 with access to a fleet of over 100 vehicles, including Supercube double-deck trailers, tractor units, box vans and rigid trucks, working out of a 100,000 sq.ft cross-docking facility at Nightline’s Dublin headquarters. Mr Quinn said that over the course of the first 12 months, Nightline International had carried in excess of 100,000 shipments, ranging from one kilogram parcels or a single pallet to 26 tonne full loads, to the UK, Northern and Southern Europe, the Middle East and Far East. The company’s rapid rate of development has already seen it named as one of the finalists as Freight Team of the Year in the Irish Logistics and Transport Awards, the country’s most prestigious industry prizes. “Being shortlisted is terrific recognition, particularly as it comes so soon after we were founded. “We are looking to increase our volumes, our range of services and the countries which we ship to and from as we move forward. “We have made great strides in a very short space of time. The important thing is in factoring in the systems and structures which will allow us to progress still further without strain, all the while providing the best possible standards of services to our growing number of clients at home and abroad.” IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Irish engineering firm to create 200 jobs
A Tipperary based engineering firm is to recruit 200 staff in Ireland after it secured a contract to Saudi Arabia’s biggest petro chemicals plant. Sepam, which is headquartered in Clonmel is looking for people in HR, finance and marketing staff as well as the main engineering and construction roles. The massive project will be the largest single-phase petrochemical development in the world and is due for completion in 2016. The company, founded by chairman Gus Kearney, is currently working on sites ranging from London's Heathrow Airport and the Mayo Clinic in the US, to rail and education schemes in Saudi Arabia and infrastructure in Doha, Qatar ahead of the 2022 World Cup. "Sepam is delighted to be working on this ground-breaking project and we are actively seeking two hundred or more Irish professionals who are looking to expand their horizons and gain valuable experience abroad," said Sepam strategic business unit director Andrew Kearney. “That strategy has been underpinned by the physical infrastructure which has been established. “Together, those elements have helped us acquire a succession of major new contracts and carry an ever-increasing volume of freight.
Adams calls for Government action on Narrow Water Bridge
Gerry Adams believes that the cross-border Narrow Water Bridge, which would connect counties Louth and Down, is still viable - if the Government gets its finger out. The proposed 195m long Narrow Water cable-stayed bridge has been in planning for over five years and would have connected Cornamucklagh near Omeath with Narrow Water near Warrenpoint. When finished, it would have been 620m long and it had been hoped it could be opened by 2015. However, the project was put on hold last November when crucial funding was withdrawn. At a recent Sinn Féin party meeting in Omeath, party president and Louth TD Gerry Adams discussed the Narrow Water Bridge and future European funding for the area. Deputy Adams called for a proper funding package to be put in place by Government so that the Narrow Water Bridge can be delivered: “The failure of the Government to ensure that the Narrow Water Bridge was built is an opportunity missed. It has been a bad blow to County Louth. “Money from Europe became available through the Special European Union Programmes Body because of an under-spend and Sinn Féin Cllr Jim Loughran asserting a judicial challenge. The money offered was not enough to cover the costs and the project promoters were not in a position to raise the extra capital to cover the shortfall. “The government needed to provide a relatively small €6 million funding package from the Taoiseach and the Department of Transport. “When I raised this issue with the Taoiseach in the Dáil, Enda Kenny said that he was in support of the project. I am disappointed that the Taoiseach’s actions did not match his words. “The bridge will be not be built on promises. A proper funding strategy needs to be put in place. The Narrow Water Bridge project can still go ahead in the future if the political will exists.”

Tougher penalties for law-breaking drivers
Drivers who break the law will be subjected to tougher penalties as of this year. According to the Road Traffic No 2 Act 2013, a driver who flees the scene of an accident with intent to escape and knowing that injury has been caused will face a fine of €10,000 and up to seven years in jail. If a death has been caused, the penalties rise to a €20,000 fine and/or ten years in prison. As things stand, motorists are liable for a fine of up to €1,000 and three months in jail if they flee an accident where damage is caused. The tough new rules are contained in a new Road Traffic Act proposed by Fianna Fail TD Timmy Dooley. Other measures include higher penalty points for motorists using mobile phones and fines of up to €2,500 for vehicle clocking. New roadside impairment tests for drug driving; higher penalty points for speeding, mobile phone use and nonwearing of seatbelts (which will now attract three points on payment of fixed charge and five on conviction); and a provision allowing unconscious drivers to be tested are also included. Learner drivers will be obliged to display an 'N' (novice) plate for two years after passing their test, and will be put off the road if they incur seven penalty points.
More signs of construction recovery
The Irish construction sector has shown further signs of recovery, with the number of new orders increasing in February 2014. According to the Ulster Bank Construction Purchasing Managers Index (PMI), the workforce in the sector also increased in February as companies expressed optimism about the year ahead, The seasonally-adjusted index, which tracks changes in the construction sector, has now registered increasing activity for six successive months. Simon Barry, chief economist for the Republic of Ireland at Ulster Bank, said: “The February results of the Ulster Bank Construction PMI point to further rises in Irish construction activity mid-way through the first quarter of 2014. “The pick-up in activity is translating into a welcome rise in staffing levels, with the employment index also registering a sixth consecutive monthly expansion in February. “Looking ahead, near-term prospects for the sector are supported by further growth in new orders as firms reported that better market conditions are generating stronger pipelines of new business. “Beyond the near-term, firms remain strongly optimistic about the sector's 12-month ahead outlook as sentiment last month remained close to the record high seen in December, buoyed by more positive signs in the wider economy.” IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

developed into one of the leading providers of waste management services. “The accolade recognises Clean Ireland Recyclings’ on-going commitment to providing a premium service to its’ customers which allows them to achieve sustainable savings, with minimum impact on the environment, we are unique in that we collect more waste types than any other operator in the country,” explained Caroline Walsh The objective of the Repak awards is to promote and encourage best practice in packaging prevention and recycling amongst industry, local authorities, recovery operators and the country's youth. “A lot of it is down to our approach to customer management and service,” Caroline added. “The awards involved a pretty intense application process that determined we were the best in 2012 and, thankfully, determined again in 2013 that we remain the best. The award gives us great confidence going to the market and looking for new customers.” Incorporated by brothers Michael and John O'Donoghue in 1990, Clean Ireland Recycling's mission is to conserve resources and reduce waste by delivering superior waste management and recycling services for customers by using the best people, technologies and resources.

sufficient for families. As a result we have seen recycling return increase and our waste volume’s decrease. “On food waste, we were one of the first companies to roll out the brown bin for food waste back in 2009 even though legislation didn't come into effect until July 2013. We remain the only operator who has rolled that out across our complete customer base, urban and rural.” Clean Ireland Recycling's investment in waste management technology reflects their commitment to the environment, to their staff of over 120 and their desire to provide the most compliant and professional waste management service. “In 2009 we developed a unique way for collecting – multi-compartmental collection trucks,” Brian revealed. “That means we call to our household customers once every fortnight as opposed to weekly which serves to further reduce our carbon footprint. Our trucks have four separate compartments for residual, recycling, food and textiles. “We also provide a free bimonthly glass collection in urban areas as well as an ‘opt-in text’ grass Collection service. On top of that, we

were also the first operator in the region to introduce a kerbside clothes collection service in conjunction the Brothers of Charity and for the past three years also we have provided our customers with the option of disposing of their Christmas tree “In addition, every customer who joins us gets the 'Big Bens' bag for bulkier waste which is too big to place in a wheelie bin but not enough for a skip. That's a 1.25 tonne bag which can be held by the customer until they require it. “The days of landfills are over,” Brian pointed out. “We set ourselves a target in 2010 to be landfill free by 2014 and

achieve that aim. We are currently producing RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel) which is exported to the Scandinavian countries for fuel in power plants and to generate electricity. “The two main motivating factors for this were, number one, economic reasons. A main driver was the significant landfill levies that were being introduced. The levy currently stands at €75 per tonne and it was €20 per tonne when I started with the company in 2009. “Secondly, some of our larger corporate companies were becoming more focussed on diverting from landfill. They were benchmarking against their overseas colleagues. Landfill was the bottom of the barrel in
terms of economic friendly disposal methods. “We focus on our customers as without their willingness to embrace our initiatives to provide sustainable savings, our business would not have achieved the growth it has. They have committed to this process not just because it means they pay less but also creating a sustainable environment is equally important to them and we hear that day in day out, which is very heartening. Waste is our business, it's not necessarily a glamor industry but we are a utility company and we place a huge emphasis on customer service and providing an environmentally aware service,” concluded Caroline.

When the recession hit the vulnerable economies of these islands – particularly the construction and transport sectors, both of which are at the heart of B McCaffrey & Sons’ business and both of which bore the brunt of the downturn – many companies were unable to cope with the sudden decline in conditions, but the Fermanagh company rolled up its sleeves, dug in its heels and has come out fighting. Rather than folding, B McCaffrey & Sons has
expanded during the downturn and they are now in a very strong position going forward. A suitably proactive approach to the challenges that presented themselves saw the company diversifying and identifying new markets, enabling them to move forward in a sustainable fashion. Ironically, if anything, the recession has made them stronger! B McCaffrey & Sons Ltd. is a third-generation family business, which was established by grandfather Bernard McCaffrey back in
B McCaffrey & Sons was founded in 1968 IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS
1968. Bernard set up from very modest beginnings, effectively overseeing a small sand and gravel pit from his home place. From those humble, embryonic days, he nurtured and developed a thriving concern, now operating out of three separate quarries and providing employment to a crew of approximately 50. The hub of the operation is Knockninny Quarry in Derrylin, County Fermanagh, which was opened (about six miles from the home place) during the mid-‘70s. Since then two
subsidiary quarries have been added: Carn Quarry in Ederney, County Fermanagh and Dunaree Quarry in Drumquin, County Tyrone. These were taken over in April 2010, significantly strengthening B McCaffrey & Sons Ltd.’s hand. B McCaffrey & Sons Ltd. specialises in supplying a wide range of concrete products including crushed stone, readymix concrete, blocks, agricultural lime, tarmac and precast products. Since the opening of the two new quarries, their area of influence has widened, leading to them covering a wider catchment area incorporating all of Fermanagh as well as parts of Tyrone, Cavan and Leitrim, with agricultural lime going as far south as County Meath and beyond. As well as directly employing around 50 people, B McCaffrey also provides indirect employment to a small crew of owner-drivers out of the two newer quarries. The McCaffrey family operates a delivery fleet of 30 units, between tippers, rigids, mixers and offloaders as well as up to 15 pieces of quarry plant including diggers, dumpers, loading shovels, forklifts etc. In terms of tractor

units, the fleet comprises almost exclusively DAF, Volvo and Renault. With a modern workshop on site in Derrylin, B McCaffrey & Sons handles all its own maintenance and servicing requirements, maintaining the fleet in tip-top condition at all times. Regular maintenance and servicing ensure that potential fleet problems are eliminated before they can materialise, while Sean – who now runs the family business alongside his brother Paraic - is a great believer in looking after trucks as well as possible at all times to preserve them in optimal condition. A fresh fleet is overseen, with units typically replaced every five to six years, depending on mileage. Over the last 46 years, B McCaffrey & Sons Ltd. has forged an exceptional reputation for providing highquality products and an equally high-quality level of customer service. The plan is to keep the show in the road by continuing
to work hard and offering customers a wide range of products / services – always at an affordable price, of course! “Our dad, Patrick, who passed away in November, 2012, played a huge role in the development of the business down through the years. He passed the company on to us and we fully intend to keep it going as best we can,” says Sean.
“We have increased the fleet size again recently and we are also hoping to add a few more new trucks in the new year. Twenty-thirteen was a very good year. The weather helped as drainage was much better and the farming sector is a big part of our business. It’s mostly farmers that we are working for these days. You will still get the odd private house but, in general, the housing market is
showing no sign of taking off again. “The bottom line is that you have to be prepared to tailor your service to meet the demands that are out there at a particular time. It’s not easy, but you have to adapt. We have been around since 1968 and we’ve seen a lot of changes. But we’re still here so we must be doing something right.”

hortlisted for the P&O Ferries Haulier of the Year award, Armstrong Transport Services has been providing an excellent haulage service for ten years. Last year, founder Alan Armstrong invested significantly in new trucks and trailers as well as introducing a vehicle escort service, a proactive policy which has seen the company further improve its already impressive capabilities. A fresh and flexible fleet is maintained in pristine condition at all times and this is central to the ongoing success of the company. “Generally, we will only run a trailer for three or four years and then we replace them,” says Alan. “If you have good plant, then you will have very little maintenance. We do most of the maintenance ourselves, while the new trucks would be under service contract. My policy has always been to buy rather than lease because at least that way the truck is your own after the two or three years.” Specialising in wide, long, heavy and abnormal loads – including farm and quarry machinery, plant, electrical equipment etc. – Alan currently operates a fleet of eight trucks, all Scania V8s. Why does he stick to this particular engine? “The resale value would be the main reason. They hold their value very well. I bought a brand new one last July and I wouldn’t really consider buying anything else, to be honest. “I also purchased some new trailers in 2013 and we would have close to 20 trailers in the fleet now between flat beds, step frames and extendables. We have a new step frame euroliner, which was designed by Alan and made to

spec in Belgium. It is ideal for carrying machinery to agricultural shows and has an internal height of up to 3.4 metres.” While the haulage/transport sector remains intensely volatile and unpredictable, Alan says he remained very busy last year and is reasonably positive that he can continue to keep the show on the road: “I’m optimistic, but you never know. We will stick with what we are at and continue to focus on the same line of work. We’re always trying to invest
in equipment that will enable us to improve our range of services. For example, last year I bought an 80 tonne GVW Scania double-drive and a fouraxle low loader so we can handle a lot of big stuff. With our own escort vehicles, we can provide that service for abnormal loads and can also do escorting for other hauliers, as well as arranging all the permits etc. “We’ve invested a substantial amount

the driving force behind his own company, the affable Tyrone man has never let a customer down. Since the recession struck, Alan has successfully pursued a growth strategy, increasing his fleet from two trucks to eight and taking on a number of important new customers. The business is versatile and Armstrong Transport Services can handle all kinds of work. With a solid line-up of Scanias and a fullyfunctional mix of low loader trailers, flats and extendables, Alan and his team of drivers - all highlytrained in low-loader work are kept busy moving new and second-hand farm machinery as well as heavy construction plant, in and out of Ireland. backgrounds and they are all dedicated to providing an efficient and friendly service. Alan was always interested in haulage as his father, Roy, owned a couple of trucks when he was growing up, and it is something that he naturally gravitated towards. Alan’s life in haulage began even before he left school, as he worked alongside his father, delivering farm supplies around County Tyrone and beyond. After a short spell with a local transport company, he quickly spotted an opportunity to go out on his own - and has never looked back. He set up his own freight-forwarding business in 2003 and bought his first truck in 2006 - a Scania 124.470 Topline. The company transports around Ireland and the UK as well as all over Europe including France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Sweden, the Czech Republic etc. They have trucks in England every day and travel to and from

mainland Europe on a weekly basis. All the necessary permits are secured from Roads Service, the police and other agencies. Armed with an exceptional fleet, in-depth knowledge and an excellent attitude, Armstrong Transport Services is going from strength to strength and there’s no reason to suspect that this particular success story is set to end any time soon. “If you don’t have the right equipment, then you won’t get the work,” Alan states. “That’s why we have invested so heavily in ensuring that we have the right plant. If anything, the trailer is even more important than the truck. Once you have the right trailer, you can do a lot with it. “We have no set contracts but we do a lot of work for a lot of different companies. I’d say we work for as many as 50 or 60 customers on a monthly basis and we are
careful not to put all our eggs in one basket. My thinking is that you are better off with 50 small accounts than two or three big ones. “We benefit from a lot of repeat business but we also

he Pallet Network is the number one distributor of palletised freight in Ireland with a network of 23 regional carriers, known as The Pallet Network Members. Based in Little Island, Cork Express Pallets Ltd joined forces with the TPN nearly three years ago and their membership allows the burgeoning company to offer next day delivery service to the 32 counties of Ireland and a 48 hour service to and from the UK. Established in 2009 by General Manager Donal O'Leary, Cork Express Pallets also covers all European destinations for collection and delivery from cartons to pallets to full loads. Donal's daughter, Sally O'Leary, and sister, Margaret Keane, are the company's directors and the family-run concern prides itself on offering comprehensive and versatile haulage services, including warehouse storage, for a wide range of clients. Their fleet of over 30 vehicles ranges from vans, boxbody trucks, curtainside trucks, articulated vehicles, box and
curtains. They can deliver anything from one carton to a full load anywhere, anytime in Ireland, the UK and Europe. "We're one of the biggest members of the TPN covering Cork city and county," explained Donal who boasts over 25 years experience in the haulage industry. "Being a member gives us the edge over our competitors by allowing us to offer next day freight delivery in the 32 counties and, with 90 depots in the UK, that enables us provide a 48 hours collection and delivery service in the UK. That prompt service gives us a big advantage." Like Cork Express Pallets, all TPN's members are established freight companies offering excellent collection and delivery services. It is the largest network in Ireland with unrivalled coverage and reach, with 10 of their 23 members operating in single county territories. It is also the only network in Ireland and the UK where all members are ISO 9001 accredited. Clients' pallets are always collected and delivered by local carriers so they
get the best service married to the very best in international pallet transport, haulage and sorting systems. "Business is not too bad at the moment, it's on a par with this time last year and I can see evidence of slight growth coming in the economy," Donal commented. "50% of our business is ambient delivery for supermarkets, food chains such as Dunnes Stores, Musgraves Wholesalers while we also deliver for the drinks trade.” As every hauler in Ireland is only too painfully aware, it's not all plain-sailing in the current economic climate but Donal is fulsome in his praise of the work of the Irish Road Hauliers Association and, in particular, its President Eoin Gavin. "The Irish Road Hauliers Association have done trojan work over the last two years. President Eoin Gavin is the Clare member of TNP and we would be in constant contact with him through work and his role with the IRHA. speaking to the Government on the toll issue. That's another major drain on truckers but the Government did agreed to give the month of October free to the
haulage industry. "They're now working to get a new road tax system in Ireland which is urgently required because as things are now UK and European haulers have a big advantage over Irish haulers." Cork Express Pallets Ltd has come a long way in a short space of time since starting up four years ago with a fleet of just two artics and four rigids. The company now has thirty-two people on its payroll, between drivers, office and warehouse staff, and recently acquired a
second warehouse in the GB Business Park in Little Island. As a result, the company has doubled its pallet storage capacity from 600 to 1200 pallets per week. So, what has been the secrets of their success to date? "We have a very good team plus we never shy away from the difficult deliveries," replied Donal. "Some hauliers won’t touch certain deliveries but we're always at the end of the market where we do the difficult jobs such as
delivering carpets and the drinks trade which involves delivering kegs, crates of beer, collecting empty bottles and so. "Some would see them as messy jobs but we don’t shy away from them." As the company slogan goes: 'Small enough to Care - Big enough to Deliver!' Cork Express Pallets Ltd have an experienced, positive thinking friendly team to assist you with all your requirements – Go on, Give them a call.

It’s as easy as B&C B&C McKeown Ltd. is the No.1 provider of car parts and reconditioned turbos in Northern Ireland - and one of the largest car dismantlers on the island. Irish Trucker paid a visit to their vast facility in Downpatrick, County Down and got an insight into day-to-day activities from Rory Branagan.
T
hree-and-a-half decades ago, B&C McKeown Ltd. was established in the Griddle Mountain, on the outskirts of Downpatrick, by Charles and the late Brian McKeown. Today, Charles and his wife Maureen are directors in the family business, with son Michael overseeing the operation, which is one of the largest car dismantlers in Ireland, north and south. This is a massive operation, as Rory Branagan, who has been part of the B&C McKeown team for seven years, notes: “We would have up to 800 cars in stock at any given time, ranging from 1990 right up to 2013. We buy crashed and damaged cars from England – mostly from auction sites – and we then sell the parts on to customers all around Ireland and further afield. We are constantly sourcing new parts and, on average, take in five or six cars a day.” To give an indication of the size of the facility (as the accompanying pictures should illustrate), bear this in mind: the yard is based along the side of a half-mile long road and runs the full length of it! A fully-licensed

dismantling facility, B&C McKeown mostly sells car parts into the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and the mainland UK although, as Rory reveals, new markets are also being opened up: “We sell parts all over the world, with current markets including Australia, New Zealand, Spain and Portugal.” Offering next-day delivery all over Ireland and a twoday delivery service to England, with all major credit cards accepted, B&C McKeown boasts over 35 years’ experience of the car dismantling business, updating its stock daily with all makes and models of cars and vans. A vast range of parts is carried in stock at all times, always at a reasonable price, as well as a full range of new and used tyres and reconditioned turbos. “We have been in the turbo business for six years,” Rory explains. “We specialise in turbo parts and would have 95% of the parts for turbos for all makes of cars available in Ireland. We sell these to private customers and also into the trade and can sell in bulk if required.” So how does one go about
sourcing a particular car part from B&C McKeown Ltd.? “All they have to do is give us a quick call on 048 44615148 and ask for either myself, Michael McKeown or Kieran Hamill. We will be happy to answer all queries on the spot and nine times out of ten we will have the exact part they are looking for. The part can be collected here in the yard or we can send it out immediately by courier. On the rare occasions where we don’t have the part in stock, we will make it our business to get the car or van in question and get that part.” With almost four decades of experience of this line of work, the team at B&C McKeown have their operations down to a fine art. Very little – if anything goes to waste. Only after a vehicle has been completely stripped will the rest will go out as scrap. Customers can rest assured that they will not only get the part they require but also that this part will be in perfect working order and will have been handled with extreme care by fullyqualified and vastlyexperienced mechanics. “We only let experienced mechanics near the cars.

They are fully competent and they all know exactly what they are doing. The parts are removed with absolute care and leave our premises in perfect condition. We understand that people only want to fit the best parts possible into their vehicles. “All of our reconditioned turbos come with a one-year manufacturer’s warranty and everything else comes with a three-month warranty.” “ We have a very good reputation across Ireland and England – and more and more so across the world – and this comes almost totally through word of mouth. When you do things properly, you will develop a good reputation and that counts for everything in this business. “We are fully-licenced and -permitted and we use only the latest tools and equipment as well as proper mechanics who do their job properly. We are open six days a week – from 9:005:30 Monday to Friday and from 9:00-2:00 on Saturdays. “At the end of the day, people just want value – and we provide that. This is a very competitive industry now and prices and profit margins have come down, but our prices were always competitive anyway and we have always been in this business to sell. We sell in large volumes and this enables us to give our customers a very, very good price.” Looking to the future, Rory concludes: “We will continue to offer excellent products and a great service at an unbeatable price. That’s what customers expect and this is a customerdriven business at the end of the day.”

Annard offers a complete and comprehensive coach building service. Using a highly-skilled and vastly experienced team of coach builders, they manufacture literally from the chassis up,

"ln terms of horse boxes, we build for everybody from show jumpers and international event riders to pony clubs," productions manager Colm McDonnell notes. "We also build motorsport lorries for hot rods and rallying teams and are currently in negotiations with F1 drivers.
"All the lorries are custombuilt. We do a lot of one-off builds but would also have regular customers who might buy two or three vehicles a year. How did proprietor Philip Cherry become involved in this line of work in the first place? "He had ponies for his own kids and he realised that the quality of horseboxes wasn't up to standard, so he started to produce his own vehicles. He originally outsourced the work but it still didn't come up to scratch, so he started up his own

"We have just shipped a P Series Scania to New Zealand, which is a custombuilt five-horse box with a living area included. This box has been designed with new moulds and skirts and has been brought to the next level. Australia and New Zealand are new territories that have opened up for us in the last nine months and we

The bottom line is that when you buy from us, you buy the best that you can get. We are global leaders when it comes to quality and we are starting to reap the rewards of that. We provide a worldwide service and we are currently in the process of trying to secure some
business in America." Productivity-wise, the Annard Ltd. facility on Loughgall's Summerisland Road is a hive of activity. "We can put out a three-and-a-half tonne horsebox (Allure) every two weeks, while a sevenand-a-half tonne (Elegance) could take around eight weeks to build and the twelve-tonne Centaur takes about 13 weeks," Colm states. "In 2013, we built a large number of bodies for NI Trucks; and 12 Horse & Motorsport lorries. "On top of that, there is

A total of 32 people are employed between coach builders, joiners, electricians, fibre-glass specialists, apprentices and office staff. All in all, things are looking

extremely good going forward. "Our design work, build quality and warranty are second to none," Colm concludes. The vast Enniskeane site
he new Co. Cork-based company came into being following the merger of two of the country’s most successful and longest established timber processing companies – Grainger Sawmills and Palfab Ltd. The original companies were both established in 1977 by William Grainger and the O’Callaghan family just 10 miles apart in Enniskeane and Lissarda respectively. GP Wood is a leading supplier of sawn softwood products. Understanding the importance of softwood as a valuable renewable resource, the company is committed to promoting its use in an

With a capital value in excess of €25 million and a turnover of €49 million (exports amount to €24 million), GP Wood is investing €5 million in a range of initiatives, including product enhancements. The merger has enabled the Grainger and Palfab Groups to combine their skills and expertise, and to provide an enhanced product range and service to customers. GP Wood is a major player in the Irish forestry industry, employing over 200
staff directly and a further 200 indirectly in its operations. Timber manufacturing in this country is focused primarily on the construction, fencing, garden leisure and packaging markets. GP Wood’s products include pallet and packaging materials, kiln dried construction timber, block materials, fencing – post and rail – and energy. The Co. Cork based company is a leading supplier of sawn softwood products. Our picture shows logs being loaded
biomass CHP plant which was designed around the sawmill’s requirements. The plant produces 2.5 MW of electricity which is sold to the national grid, and 6 MW of thermal energy. “Enniskeane is a carbon neutral site,” GP Wood’s forestry manager Traolach Layton explains. “It combines heat and power to generate electricity which we supply to the ESB and use to dry our timber products. At this site, we process 150,000 cubic metres of small solid each year.” The Lissarda site processes 200,00 cubic metres of sawlog and is also home to Eirebloc, which is a business that uniquely combines industry-specific experience, in-depth research and entrepreneurial flair. Eirebloc supplies quality composite blocks to pallet producers throughout Europe. The business represents the coming together of two highly reputable companies in the timber industry – GP Wood and Mid Cork Pallets & Packaging – whose combined activities bring over three decades of specialised
knowledge and experience to the management of Eirebloc. In addition to producing its own sawn products, GP Wood also imports partprocessed timber from Scandinavia, Russia, the Baltic States and mainland Europe. The company also has its own harvesting wing and offers a private tree thinning service. GP Wood’s logs are sourced from forests accredited by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). This is an international organisation that has developed a set of principles
and criteria for sustainable forest management (SFM), which includes environmental considerations. The company has FSC Chain of Custody Certification which traces the tree from the forest through processing to its sale as sawn timber. Timber processing as well as producing sawn timber has co-products such as sawdust, woodchip and bark. Woodchip is used in the manufacture of medium density fibreboard (MDF) and paper. Sawdust is used in the manufacture of chipboard, bark is utilised as garden
mulch, while woodchip and sawdust are also used as animal bedding. Each and every log is utilised. Both of GP Wood’s facilities operate under an Integrated Pollution Prevention Control (IPPC) license which is monitored by the Environmental Protection Agency. GP Wood also adheres to the strictest health and safety regulations. The directors of GP Wood are Niall Grainger, Susan Grainger, Donal O’Callaghan and Gerard O’Callaghan, who all have wide-ranging experience in the timber

sustain this growth. “We’ve made a conscious decision to grow the business and that’s what we’ll be focusing on in the coming years, without getting carried away,” Pat notes. “In many respects, we are still providing very much the same service that we’ve built our reputation on – but the volume has increased. We have much

greater capacity now, both in transport and in storage – and we are in a stronger position to provide solutions to more and more customers.” To embark on a programme of expansion represents a brave move but directors Pat and Derek Flaherty have taken it in their stride and the transition into a larger, more
efficient operation has been seamless. “There is still a strong demand for our services, so we must be doing something right,” Pat quips. That’s a modest observation. Since this company was established by Pat and Derek’s late father Paddy, it has become synonymous with quality, professionalism and dependability. Offering a wide range of services at competitive rates, the PD Flaherty boasts decades of experience and expertise as well as holding waste permits for every county in Ireland. The location – at Kilshane, on the N2 and within minutes of the M50 and Port Tunnel – is ideal and storage facilities are located on-site (including storage for containers). The addition of the extra warehousing facility in Ballycoolin has enhanced an already-excellent service even further. The main yard boasts stateof-the-art unloading / loading facilities, comprising all the latest specialist equipment and personnel for the most awkward loads. The fleet is meticulously maintained in immaculate condition and optimum running order. “We do all our own maintenance,” Pat confirms. “We have two full-time mechanics on site and the workshop has never been busier. The Flahertys have always endeavoured to provide a brilliant service and this has seen them develop a reputation that is quite simply second to none. Having opted to expand the business, Pat and Derek have of course taken on added responsibilities. Pat is mindful of this and is determined to do everything in his power to look after his customers as well as possible whilst also keeping his employees in work: “Yes, there’s extra responsibility there, but it has to be done,” he concludes. “You can’t let your business stagnate. Considering how many jobs we have created, we’re not getting much help at all and it seems to be getting harder to keep your head above the water with all the rules and regulations … and they keep coming back for more. But you can only do your best and that’s one thing we will definitely be doing!”

rish Trucker caught up recently with David Browne Jnr to speak about the latest goings on at the firm. The main talking point is their new depot in Enniskillen and the major investment they have placed on improving their already state of the art facilities. But first, let’s take a look at the services that this ever-expanding business supplies to its large customer base. Lakeland Recovery is a professional, low-cost vehicle recovery and transportation business, covering the 32 counties. The company is a 100% reliable, punctual and fully-insured vehicle breakdown/recovery service with
an unrivalled record in safety. They can handle all types and sizes of vehicles, from motorbikes and passenger cars to large HGVs, tractors and buses. The state-of-the-art, hard-working Lakeland Recovery fleet is maintained to the highest possible standards and kept clean and presentable at all times reflecting the swift and professional service provided. The full range of expert services available includes vehicle towing, crash recovery, truck towing and recovery, roadside repairs, fuel removal, wheel changes, battery jumpstarts, roadside puncture repairs, fuel delivery, vehicle lock-outs, mobile tyre changes, longdistance towing and haulage of plant and farm machinery. “As well as our recovery operations we have a fully equipped workshop where we provide damage repairs, insurance work, panel beating and re-spray. All services are offered on a 24-hour basis and all operators are trained to the highest industry standards, the Lakeland Recovery fleet including five tilt and slides for easy and damage-free loading during roadside assistance, a dedicated mobile tyre service van, two small roadside assistance van and three specialist heavy recovery unit for larger vehicles. The directors go to great lengths to ensure that all their operatives are fullytrained and kept up to speed with all industry developments and requirements. The fleet is comprehensively-insured and tracking systems are installed. “Business is busy all year round. There are no guarantees and you just take it one day at a time in this industry though. But we’re kept going. Our rates are extremely competitive and the experience that we have picked up over

the years has stood to us,” stated David, who’s father David Snr established the business from humble beginnings in 1981. The family run business includes David Snr, who is still actively involved in the day to day running of the business, along with his wife Dympna, who looks after the Accounts and two daughters Aishling and Lorraine, who answer the phones here for the 24hr service, while David Jnr is now the General Manager and Maggie Leonard, who manages the business side of the company is now regarded as one of the family as she is there so long! David has seen many changes in the recovery industry over the years with new legislations being introduced on a regular basis. But despite the extra paperwork involved, he feels the changes have been for the better. “Certainly, the introduction of more stringent laws has
helped remove the ‘cowboy’ from this industry and anyone trying to get into the business has to have the proper certificates in place. Before this, a lot of operators were not properly covered with the right insurance, but that can’t happen now.” Lakeland Recovery Service
has always prided itself in their high standard of customer service and see it as the key reason for their repeat business, which has seen them retain their customers’ business down through the years. Repeat business is crucial in the recovery service game and

accredited with PAS 43 and can recover vehicles nationwide. The reason why Lakeland Recovery services are so popular is quite simple, really. At the end of the day, it all comes down to providing that quality service: “We do the
job right. That has been our way since the very first day. We also place a big emphasis on training our staff and we have recently moved to a larger, secure storage facility with CCTV and full security measures in place. This compound houses up to
400 vehicles and the customer can be assured their vehicle is safe and will be looked after.” Looking to the future, David concludes: “If things continue the way they have been

Management of waste at the Killala plant
owadays the recycling industry plays such an integral part of everyday life to an extent that every householder now plays their part in making this a healthier environment and Loftus Recycling has been there for the past 20 years to offer its services to people in the west of Ireland. Set-up in 1994, Loftus Recycling Ltd provides waste and recycling collection services to commercial, domestic and industrial customers in the Mayo, Sligo and Roscommon areas. They supply customers with domestic wheelie bins or skips in various sizes to suit each customer’s needs and collect wood, cardboard, glass, metals and plastics for recycling, while nonrecyclable waste is delivered to a registered landfill site. The origins of Garry’s business go back to a short stint he spent in Germany, where he saw first hand how recycling worked and on his return home he decided to establish his own company in this sector. Garry started off with just one van going around collecting glass and simply went door-to-door for work. When he got a few clients on board, the business then expanded through word of mouth and eventually Loftus Recycling was born. “It was hard work at first and it certainly was a big undertaking, but I knew that if I worked hard enough I could make a success
One of the Loftus Recycling skip wagons
of the business,” said Garry. Loftus Recycling was set-up by Garry and his wife Noreen with the sole intention of striving to provide their customers with quality service from its facility in Killala Co. Mayo. They focussed heavily on recycling industry for seven years before eventually taking the decision to start operating in waste management, collecting household waste and recycling as much as possible. “The service we provide sees as much waste recycled as possible,” he said. “Skips are hired out by various companies and the private sector, while we deliver to the site and collect when full. The waste is then separated at a permitted facility and sent to the relevant facility for recycling.” The business has continued to move forward and he is pleased with the growth and stature of the company over the past number of years. This is reflected by the fact that Loftus Recycling now employs a total of 25 staff, including Garry’s wife Noreen who helps looks after the administration end of the business, and opened a new indoor sorting facility at the company’s headquarters four years ago. “We moved to a new facility in the old Asahi plant in Killala which opened in 2010. We invested over €500,000 on new automatic balers, picking lines, granulators and waste handlers

to help cope with the demand,” he explained. “It’s quite a competitive business we’re in at the moment and fuel prices is a big thing. We try to offer the best prices for our customers but it is difficult. We do get a lot of local business and we’d cover Castlebar and a lot of the North West. We started the brown bins for our customers a few years ago and it has been going well for us.” He added: “I’m happy with the way the business has flourished since it was established and we have built

a decent reputation for ourselves that we must continue to maintain and hopefully expand in the near future.” Times have changed dramatically with regards to the handling of waste materials and Garry acknowledges the fact that there is a lot more paperwork involved nowadays. “The paperwork is unreal at this stage and that is the way it has been for the past seven or eight years. There is so much legislation in place and there seems to be new laws introduced every year.”
IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS
Audits are held on a regular basis by the Department of the Environment and Mayo County Council to ensure that all operators are following the proper procedures and although all this is time consuming, it is worthwhile as it eliminates rogue traders in the industry. Loftus Recycling Ltd employs 25 people and Garry stressed that each one of them play a massive part in the success of the company and he’s very grateful for their services. “The staff are dedicated and work hard,” he said.
“Some of them have been with me many years and their loyalty is appreciated. It is important to have people that can perform their duties and make decisions without having to run everything by someone else.” With the rate of waste generation continuing to increase and existing waste disposal sites reaching the end of their useful lifetime, coupled with the possibility of overseas facilities for the treatment of hazardous waste being closed off to Irish industry, this is now a matter of urgency.

If this situation is not addressed, industry will be either forced to scale-down its operations or be deterred from establishing in Ireland and this is why recycling has become such a crucial factor in modern society. With 14 trucks on the road, Garry has plenty of overheads and he feels that DAF is the most reliable make of truck on the road at the present time. “This is a reasonable competitive business and it is essential to provide an efficient service at a reasonable rate that is affordable to the customers. Running so many trucks can lead to many overheads, but that is something you must deal with. “I prefer to buy DAF trucks; there are very few problems with them and that is important as you don’t want trucks breaking down. They are no use sitting in the yard or on the side of the road. We have various types of trucks including skip wagons, glass trucks, three tonne bin wagons, hook loaders, 3 tonne delivery pick up and the newest additions – two 16 ton bin wagons with split compactors for new dual collection services.” As part of the skip hire, the company supply different types of skip including the chain lift and the roll-on rolloff to a wide variety of customers in the building trade and private sector. Loftus Recycling Ltd operates in Ballina and in other areas of the county as its customer base has increased considerably over the years and much of this is due to the efficient and quality service that is provided by the company. he company was established in Arklow, Co. Wicklow by Edwin Sunderland 15 years ago and has gone from strength to strength in the intervening period. The service provided by Edwin includes everything from permit procurement and route surveys to escorting and traffic management. As ELS does not operate its own trucks, it can work with hauliers, manufacturers and shipping agents as genuinely independent partners. In addition to acting as agents for all abnormal load/oversize loads for the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, ELS offers the same service through a network for the rest of Europe and beyond. “We manage road movement from point of entry (i.e. the port) to site entrance. Everything we do is planned and managed to the finest detail,” the ELS managing director explains. “Traffic management and route surveying is a

growing sector and we can tailor our service to suit any size of job. What we bring to the table is an expertise in handling wide or abnormal loads while it’s on a public road. We only work with reliable hauliers, who we enjoy an excellent understanding and relationship with.” When it comes to traffic management, ELS liaises with the Gardai and Local Authorities to arrange road closures, contra flows, street furniture removal etc. It also provides traffic cones, kerb supports, no parking signs etc. For longer-term or larger projects such as wind farms, ELS provides detailed traffic management plans. As part of its escort service, ELS operates a fleet of dedicated vehicles kitted out to a high standard. By using your exact load dimensions and transport details, ELS carries out route surveys resulting in a full report on the selected route, details of problem areas, solutions, permits and traffic management requirements. The company specialises in route selection surveys and feasibility studies for wind farms and all forms of heavy transport. To date, ELS has carried out some hundreds of such surveys and are Ireland’s leading provider of this type of preliminary study. Responsible for bringing the all the LUAS trains to Dublin a decade ago, ELS is now heavily involved in the transportation of wind turbine equipment. “Wind energy is only going to get bigger in this country, so you’re going to see a lot more of this type of equipment being transported on our roads,” Edwin says. “We’ve specialised in wind turbine logistics over the years and have built up a lot of experience in this field. We also cater for the heavier end of the market of 200 ton plus loads with bridge surveys etc. There are very few loads – regardless of size – that can’t be moved if the right planning and organisation has gone into it beforehand.”

Exceptional Load Services is well placed to continue growing in the years ahead, having come through the recession with flying colours. “We’re doing well at the moment. Things have picked up greatly in the past few months and we’re on the road nearly every day of the week. The flexibility of our company meant that we were able to adapt and provide the same levels of service during the
recession. We had a deliberate capital equipment policy of vehicle replacement which has stood us in good stead. “When everyone else was cutting back in 2009, we went out and bought two new vans. rom beginning to end, progressive Co Laois company Worrell Harvesting offers the complete solution in the field of forestry. If having a keen eye for an opportunity is a central facet of success in the world of business, then those in Worrell Harvesting certainly fit the bill. Since coming into existence, they’ve grown to become a leader in the Irish forest industry and it has seen them providing their services across the Irish Sea in Scotland and Wales, while they have also expanded to Europe. Uniquely, the firm has developed a way of harvesting that creates biomass and also ensures reduced costs, higher yields and better prices for timber growers, who get more
from their forests thanks to Worrell Harvesting. Kenneth, who still oversees the day-to-day running of the business, modestly sums up how it all started for the
Neil and Kenneth Worrell on site
company, saying: “We started out cutting timber in the woods with one chainsaw in 1987. In 1992 the first harvester and forwarder were purchased. In 199 we bought our first truck
and at the moment we have Volvos and Scanias.” He added: “Harvesters are quite expensive. There around the €480,000 mark and forwarders are €300,000. It’s a very tough and competitive business and we never got ‘a boom’ the way the construction industry did.” Since 1992, Worrell Harvesting has become synonymous with all aspects of the forestry industry, carrying out a range of work for public and private clients at home and abroad. Very much a family-run business, Worrell Harvesting is run by Kenneth with Colin as Maintenance Manager and Head of New Machinery Development, another brother Neil is a Site Manager. Neil and
Worrell Harvesting the greener cleaner 2014 sees Worrell Harvesting mark 22 years in business. The impressive new Komtech chipper
Colin manage the day to day of the harvesting operations. The success of the firm is down to the fantastic team in place as Kenneth explains: “Sinead and Cora do a very good job managing all aspects of the administration for the company. Indeed the staff at Worrell Harvesting deserve the credit for where the business is today. They work hard and are often away from their families for a long time. They are the people that are dealing with the customers on a day-to-day basis and are ambassador’s for the company.” Having graduated quickly from the single chainsaw, the Worrell family invested heavily to make the company what it is to today. “We purchased our first forestry machine in 1992, it was a Mini brunette 678 forwarder. Between harvesters and forwarders, it has taken serious investment alright,” said
Kenneth. “The company took the decision to buy our own machines, whether it’s harvesters, forwarders or trucks, so it has needed a bit of investment over the last number of years.” Since the start of the year Worrell harvesting have taken delivery of a new Komptech Chipper which chips timber for biomass. This machine is the first of its kind in Ireland and is capable of chipping logs which are 800mm in diameter. It is a crucial piece of machinery for the business as Kenneth explains: “For us it is the final link in the chain. It allows us to handle the product from forest right the way to the end user.” Worrell Harvesting are also making the machine available on contract to other biomass and woodchip suppliers. It is a high productive machine that produces a very high quality woodchip. With a large volumes

of timber in stock the customer can be confident that the product is away available. Worrell Harvesting first dipped its toe in the field of haulage in 1998 when legal weights were being enforced and that meant more trucks were needed in the industry. The firm began to invest in trucks and their first Scania was purchased. “The new maximum weight was 44 tonnes,” said Kenneth. “It was a case of supply and demand – with lower maximums allowed, there was a bit of a niche in the market and more trucks were needed, so we stepped in to fill the gap. It also suited us better to have our own trucks to meet our own haulage requirements. It was easier to manage our own fleet.” Having spent time as one of the main contractors of the Irish national forestry service Coillte, Worrell Harvesting has successfully diversified its client
base over the past few years, and the company has not balked at the prospect of moving outside Ireland to take up contracts elsewhere in Europe. “We spent time in Germany a couple of years ago when we saw a good opportunity there,” says Kenneth, “and we have worked in France for two and half years after a wind blow in January 2009. There was a storm and about 50 million tonnes of timber was blown down, so all that timber had to be harvested and hauled.” With 20 employees, including his brothers Colin and Neil, at its base in Ballybrittas in Co Laois, Worrell Harvesting do their bit for the environment by using the waste of the tree (45% of the tree in a first thinning forest is left behind on the forest floor) and supplying it to companies who use woodchip/biomass to generate heat or electricity. wind blow which will include harvesting of biomass and chipping the biomass on the 11 th April in Tullamore . Any interest parties should contact Donal on 01 2350521 or email info@itga.ie
“We secure timber from hardwood and softwood, clearfell and thinning private and state forests. Biomass (woodchip) is secured from any part of the tree including the branches and therefore we source timber from brash (this product cannot be driven on or contaminated), overgrown hedge rows ,timber from nurseries, orchards, site clearings, burnt forests, Christmas tree farms, reclaimed land and areas of forestry that did not grow properly. No tree to big or to small when you are harvesting for biomass.”
Using the brash that is left behind in the forest has some major advantages: - you don’t have the cost of IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

windrowing (gathering up the branches into rows) the clearfell site - you can plant more trees per hectare because you can now plant trees where the windrows would have been which in turn will increase the volume of timber to come of the site on the next generation of timber - normally the trees beside the windrows (2 in every 7) will have heavy green branches. Because of the gaps across the forest, the light would get at more of these trees therefore
growing branches like boundary trees. This in turn lowers the value of the log because there is knots in the tree. With no windrows and planting in the gaps, this problem is elemented. - when you go into do your first thinnings on your next crop the place you should have your machine line is where the windrow is . But you cannot do this so you have to move closer to the drain this may cause wind blow later and also makes it very A Scania with a load of logs
difficult for the machine operator to thin the forest correctly. Worrell Harvesting’s system removes this problem . - depending on conditions there may be a financial return for the tops of the trees another bonus
Worrell Harvesting offer an unbeatable deal to timber growers: a high price for the timber, higher volumes of timber when we include the branches (average of 100 tonnes of biomass per hectare in clear-fells), security of timber, professional job, maximum value out of the trees, lower afforestation costs, higher volume of timber from the next crop, higher value trees from the next crop, less chance of wind blow and a higher price for your timber.

energy in an era which has forced all energy-users to consider alternatives to fossil fuels. Worrell wood chips – sourced from pine and spruce in local forests and described by the company as the cleaner, greener option – represent a clear alternative to carbonchurning oil and coal. In addition to its status as a renewable, sustainable source of energy, wood chip is also carbon neutral, clean, home-produced and, perhaps most i m p o r t a n t l y, represents excellent value for money. “To a high-energy user say, there could be a saving of around 40 per cent on energy bills from wood chip as compared to oil,” he said. As well as a source of fuel, there is another use for wood chip – as bedding for cattle. “You’ll only have to put it in once a year,” said Kenneth. Sawdust, a corollary with any wood-harvesting technique, is available for horseowners while Worrell Harvesting also processes firewood cut and split into convenient lengths and ready for immediate use. Its firewood in sold in bulk or in m3 bags for houses, restaurants and hotels, or in net bags for retailers, while a delivery service also available.

Parking free-for-all in Dublin?
Dublin’s clampers are threatening to go on strike, which could mean a parking free-for-all in the city centre. The clampers, who are members of Siptu, are due to ballot on industrial action today. They are being balloted on whether they should strike over a 2.5% pay increase from their employers, Dublin Street Parking Services (DSPS), which the union said has been outstanding since 2011. The company argued it could not pay the increase because service levels required by Dublin City Council were not being met. (The Council had set the company a target to clamp 60,000 vehicles a year.) Last December, the Labour Court recommended acceptance of proposals aimed at resolving the pay claim. Under these proposals the company offered to pay staff a bonus of €2,000 each if the 60,000 target was reached this year. If overall targets are not met, only individual clampers who manage to clamp 2,800 vehicles in a year will be rewarded. The target of 60,000 vehicles per year was presented to the clampers last week. In a letter to staff at Dublin Street Parking Services, the Council essentially said that workers would get their €2,000 bonus if 60,000 cars are clamped this year. The target for towing is 1,467 removals. Staff would also be able to finish early if they clamp or tow a certain number of vehicles.
