The NRA says hundreds Construction on new motorway of jobs will be created during the construction process. It is between Gort and Tuam set to begin expected the motorway will take up to three years to complete at a cost of €550 million. An environmental assessment of the proposed route has already been done, along with an archaeological review. In addition, compulsory purchase orders required to develop the road have been completed. The project stalled in 2010 when the bidders first selected as the private contractor were unable to secure funding to carry out the work, due to the economic downturn. The contract was subsequently awarded to Direct Route- a group made up of several contractors including Lagan, Roadbridge and Sisk.

Port of Cork sees increase in trade traffic in 2012 End of Year Statement from Brendan Keating, Chief Executive of the Port of Cork Company The Port of Cork Company today announced end of year trade traffic results for 2012, showing a total of 9.05 million tonnes. This is an increase of 2% compared to 2011 figures and it is the first time traffic figures in the Port have surpassed 9 million tonnes since 2008. 2012 was a very challenging year across many sectors including the Irish port sector with the import of goods through Irish ports reported to have fallen by up to 11%. However, the Port of Cork container volumes has shown an increase of 6% with over 165,000 TEU handled during 2012 and imports, excluding oil, are up by 12%. Imports of animal feed stuffs increased by 58% compared to 2011 while fertiliser, cereals and other trades have shown a marginal decrease in 2012. Oil traffic remained steady despite the lower levels of domestic economic activity; however exports of refined product from Phillips 66 Whitegate Oil Refinery were strong and continue to be a significant part of the Port of Cork business. Exports are a key driver in the successful recovery of the Irish Economy and the Port of Cork is committed to continuous support in the growth of international trade for the country’s economic prospects and job creation. Remarking on the end of year trade traffic results, Mr Brendan Keating, Chief Executive of the Port of Cork said: “The Port of Cork is pleased to announce that our total trade traffic in 2012 remained strong and overall we are starting to see some stabilisation in trade levels in and out of the Port. With 98% of volume of all goods imported or exported from Ireland moved by ship, the importance of ports to our economy is of vital strategic importance. We will continue to look to the sectors that are performing strongly, such as food exports and will seek to capitalise on the demand for such goods from Europe and emerging markets.” He continued: “The Port of Cork is a key link to the continued economic success of Ireland and in particular the entire Munster region. The challenge now facing us in 2013 is to continue to develop the Port in order to meet the needs of the Country as it emerges from this current recession. We will continue to be extremely active in the emerging trends and logistic supply changes to reinforce our existing strength as the primary deepwater port in the south of Ireland and build on our progress to date”. Port officials are pro-actively engaged with tourism interests, County and City Councils and destination attractions to enhance the product on offer to the visiting cruise lines with a view to growing the business further through its dedicated cruise terminal. 57 cruise vessels visited the Port of Cork during 2012 bringing almost 100,000 passengers and crew to the region and the Port is scheduled to accommodate 64 vessels in 2013. The Port of Cork was awarded two Cruise Insight Awards for ‘Best Shore Side Welcome’ and ‘Best Tour Guides’ which were announced at the global shipping conference, Seatrade Miami in April 2012. This achievement highlighted the outstanding team effort and commitment by the Port of Cork to deliver an excellent service to the visiting cruise lines and their passengers when in Cork. The Port is delighted to be supporting The Gathering for 2013 and is actively ensuring that all visitors who transit through our facilities receive a warm welcome to Irish shores. Brittany Ferries remained steady on its weekly ferry service from Cork to Roscoff and the Port remains fully committed to establishing new routes and services from Cork. The Port of Cork’s recreational strategy continues to expand with the aim of improving the marine leisure facilities around Cork Harbour.

Mobile phone is most hated of driver bad habits

A survey of Irish motorists carried out by premium tyre manufacturer, Continental, shows that other drivers’ use of a (hand-held) mobile phone while behind the wheel is the single most annoying bad habit on the road. 68.4 percent of drivers highlighted this as their biggest bugbear when it comes to bad habits of other drivers. The other most annoying habits that irked respondents included: · overtaking illegally or dangerously (47.7 percent); · driving too slowly (44.1 percent); · not indicating or generally bad lane use (43.2 percent); and · breaking the speed limit (40.0 percent)

Mobile phones in the hands of other drivers make most motorists see red

More than half of drivers (51 percent) said that looking down at a mobile phone while texting or using apps or the internet was more dangerous than making a call with the handset held to the ear. The research for Continental Tyres was commissioned to address how road safety can be improved and accidents reduced as part of the company’s long term commitment to ‘Vision Zero’. This is Continental’s aim of reducing accidents through its innovative tyre technologies and automotive systems so that we achieve a situation where there are Zero accidents and Zero fatalities on the road. Tom Dennigan of Continental Tyres Ireland said: “Driving is a complex task that requires our full attention and concentration – when the bad habits of other drivers distract us from that task that can have serious implications for road safety”. In an effort to tackle the problem of drivers’ bad habits, respondents called for more education of drivers (40.9 percent) and / or more Garda enforcement of the laws governing driving (34.2 percent). However, showing a certain amount of double standards, some 45 percent of the same respondents admitted to regularly breaking the speed limit and nearly 40 percent (37.8) said that they regularly use a hand-held mobile phone while behind the wheel. It is clear that annoying bad habits are a common feature of driving today in Ireland, more than two thirds of drivers (68 percent) say they are confronted with annoying bad habits of other drivers every time or most times that they get behind the wheel. And it seems that other drivers’ bad habits are a key cause of road rage as nearly one in two motorists (48 percent) said that they react to other drivers’ bad habits aggressively by either hitting the horn or shouting / using a hand gesture. Nearly one in five (18 percent) say that seeing other drivers’ bad habits make them drive more aggressively, either faster, to overtake the offending driver, or deliberately slowing down ahead of the offender to show their frustration. “Hearing the reactions of some motorists to other drivers’ bad habits which can range from getting into heated exchanges, to causing some drivers to drive dangerously, is very worrying. Our advice to motorists is to concentrate on what is going on in your own car – that is all that you have control over, and if another driver’s behaviour really irritates you, in the words of the song, ‘let it go’ – it is not worth risking the safety of yourself, your passengers and other road-users by over-reacting”.

McHale Plant Sales boosts service fleet

Komatsu, Metso, Merlo and Zetor distributor McHale Plant Sales has turned up the volume on their provision of technical support services with the enlargement of their mobile service fleet. Following their appointment as distributors for Metso crushing and screening plant - and the expansion that is taking place in sales across their portfolio generally driven by improving economic conditions – the company has recorded a rising demand for mobile, on-site servicing. Driven by the objective of ensuring that service assistance is within close reach of its customers, the company has invested in four additional mobile units which have gone into operation alongside its established fleet. Guiding this investment, according to the company’s managing director, Michael McHale, was the consideration McHale Plant Sales have that customers seeking service ‘should be within little more enlarged their mobile service fleet than a one hour drive away’.

Transpoco signs major agreement with Topaz

Irish telematics company Transpoco has announced an agreement with Topaz Energy Group, Ireland’s largest convenience store and fuel retail business. In a deal estimated to be worth initially up to €250,000 per annum, Topaz will promote the Synx technology to their fuel card customer base in Ireland. SynX, which was developed following a €1m investment programme, is a cloud computing based service which integrates Transpoco GPS software with data from fuel cards to provide cost saving business intelligence. It uses a combination of technologies to boost fleet management through improved fuel usage, driving technique monitoring, maintenance recording and other business intelligence. Typical users include Kingsmaid Domestic Cleaning in the UK which reported annual savings of almost €25,000 and a 300% Return on Investment (RoI) in its first year. SynX is based on research conducted by Transpoco which found at least a 20% difference in fuel consumption and 35% in maintenance costs between best and worst performing drivers. Liam Mulcahy, Topaz Commercial Director said, “This agreement will boost our fleet fuel customer service and help them manage their vehicles more efficiently and at lower cost. It sits perfectly with our Topaz Quality Fuels which contains an additive that increases fuel economy. Partnerships like this build long term customer relationships and allow us to offer increased value to our fuel card customers.” “This agreement with a market leader like Topaz is further endorsement of our technology,” commented Andrew Fleury, CEO, Transpoco. “Topaz understands that vehicle fleets that use fuel cards want to receive excellent customer service, optimise costs, as well as operating their vehicles as smoothly and safely as

possible.” With 444 service stations nationwide, Topaz is Ireland's largest fuel and convenience brand. 158 of the service stations are company owned and run, with 286 stations operated by independent retailers on the dealer network. Swords based, Transpoco (www.transpoco.com) earlier this year announced that it is to double its employment to 40 in 2016. Key target markets include UK, Ireland, and France. Thermo King ThermoLite Solar Panels for Continuous Charging and Extended Refrigeration Units’ Battery Life

Thermo King, a manufacturer of transport temperature control solutions for a variety of mobile applications and a brand of Ingersoll Rand, introduced the new, high capacity ThermoLite™ solar panels designed to maintain a continuous charge, extend battery life of the reefer units and prevent costly road calls for flat batteries. This solution is based on the same technology that was launched by Thermo King in the US in 2015 and which has since been widely acclaimed across the market. “Batteries, discharged for many reasons, may reach a point where they have been fully discharged so often that they become un-rechargeable and lead to expensive service call-outs and eventually battery replacement,” said Gary Mullins, aftermarket product manager at Thermo King in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. “Our solar panels enable TracKing™ and other telematics systems to monitor assets over long periods of time, even when the transport refrigeration unit is off, while also safeguarding the health of the battery.” Transport companies often put significant attention to being in constant contact with their trailers through the use of a telematics system, even if the unit is off-road or on part of a journey where the reefers units are idle. ThermoLite solar panels help prevent battery deterioration caused by natural or deep discharge through auxiliary loads like telematics systems or other devices, lights and sensors. They continuously charge the battery thus offsetting these loads and help to contribute to unbroken operation of the reefer systems. The use of ThermoLite solar panels, through regular charging, even in low light winter conditions, and thus preventing decrease in battery discharge, contributes to extending battery life and increasing fuel savings over the life of the asset. The only automotive-rated charge controller on the market, ThermoLite’s patent-pending charge controller eliminates concerns regarding electrical power surges, reverse polarity that creates a potential shock hazard, overcharging, and high-voltage jump starting. Designed to fit directly to the insulated bodies’ rooftops, the new Thermo King ThermoLite solar panels underwent extensive tests and validations including resistance to vibrations, pressure washing and exposure to high- and low-ambient environments to ensure the robustness and reliability needed for transport applications, no matter what climate a driver is in. Schmitz Cargobull’s high-security box trailers are the safest option for Brian Yeardley Continental

West Yorkshire-based international logistics company Brian Yeardley Continental has taken on 10 new Schmitz Cargobull highsecurity, low ride box trailers. The new trailers will join the company’s rapidly Brian Yeardly Continental has taken on 10 new Schmitz expanding exhibition and events logistics Cargobull high security, low ride box trailers division branded Trucking by Brian Yeardley which operates throughout the UK and Europe. Key to securing the deal was the performance of the company’s existing Schmitz Cargobull trailers, coupled with the impressive security features and low unladen weight offered with the new units. Brian Yeardley Continental Managing Director Kevin Hopper says: “In our opinion these are the best box van trailers on the market. They offer us maximum security, but they are also a tonne lighter than the nearest competitor. This is a huge advantage as we are able to keep our operating costs low by maximising on payload with every journey.” Due to the high-value audio-visual equipment being transported, the trailers have been fitted with ultra-secure SBS locks – a bolt-through system which has no parts on the outside, so cannot be cut or removed. Schmitz Cargobull’s technical team has also worked closely with the live events and exhibitions specialist to include a number of innovative features on the trailers. These include specially designed and built loading ramps and ramp carriers as well as extra locking and load securing points. The trailers also feature a bespoke lighting system for night time loading and unloading which includes interior multi-chamber low-energy LED lighting on a timer. “We have always been extremely impressed with the attention to detail which goes into every Schmitz Cargobull product. The new high-security box trailers highlight the company’s commitment to developing trailers specifically suited to our needs,” says Hopper. The new trailers feature Schmitz Cargobull’s FERROPLAST® body panels, constructed using galvanised steel sheeting, which offers greater security and is easier to repair than traditional GRP. An added advantage is the fact that the panels do not absorb moisture and therefore do not increase in weight over time, meaning the maximum payload remains consistent over the life of the trailer. The ten new box trailers join Brian Yeardley Continental’s existing fleet of 16 low-ride box trailers deployed on its exhibition and event logistics business – and are each expected to cover 125,000 miles annually, enough to drive more than three times around the Equator. The trailers will be serviced by the company’s in-house maintenance team and are expected to remain on the fleet for seven years. Brian Yeardley Continental was established in 1975 and operates from its head office in Featherstone, West Yorkshire. The company also has an office and large warehouse in in Ashford Kent close to the Channel.

How many tonnes can a Volvo Truck pull?

Together with the world’s strongest man, a Volvo FH16 will determine just how much weight a single truck can pull. On April 12th, the answer will be revealed on Volvo Trucks’ YouTube channel. How much weight can a Volvo FH16 handle? Volvo Trucks updated gearbox – the new I-Shift with crawler gears – can start and drive with up to 325 tonnes. But just how much more can the transmission handle? All our questions will be answered in Volvo Trucks’ forthcoming challenge. Behind the wheel of the world’s strongest series-produced truck, Magnus Samuelsson, winner of The World’s Strongest Man title, will face his heaviest challenge yet. At his side he has the experienced trucking journalist Brian Weatherley. “Attempting to move off from standstill with such a heavy load, like we’re doing here, is an immensely tough challenge for a regular series-produced truck with automated transmission. In my 30 years as a trucking journalist, I’ve never witnessed anything like it,” says Brian Weatherley. In the challenge that takes place in Gothenburg, Sweden, the Volvo Truck will try to pull a 300-metre long road train. How did it go? Find out on April 12th when the film premieres on Volvo Trucks’ YouTube channel.

New generation Actros engine saves further 3% fuel

Mercedes-Benz has re-armed its Actros truck with a new generation engine in readiness for its next Irish Fuel Duel Challenge. In European tests, the new OM471, 6-cylinder, 12.8-litre Actros engine returned up to 3% fuel saving, bettering the model it replaces. Mercedes-Benz attributes the fuel saving figures to a combination of factors. These include sophisticated engine technology, a unique X-Pulse injection system, a patented solution for exhaust gas recirculation and simultaneous control of the exhaust gas turbocharger. The new Before this new 2nd generation engine was generation Actros introduced, the Actros completed numerous Fuel Duel tests on Irish roads and in Irish conditions, returning fuel consumption figures some 10.4% better than its main rivals. As preparations are made to put the new engine through its paces on Irish roads, Fergus Conheady, commercial vehicle sales manager for Mercedes-Benz in Ireland said: “We expect the results achieved here to mirror those in other markets – namely further fuel saving of up to 3% on top of the 10.4% achieved previously.” Interested fleet operators can obtain further information or arrange a Fuel Duel by contacting: fuelduel@mercedes-benz.ie

TIP previews two new added value initiatives at CV Show

Continuing with its long-term support of the CV Show, TIP Trailer Services will be previewing two new initiatives at this year’s show. TIP is introducing !inspect and FleetRemote for the first time here in the UK. !inspect is an App using the camera of mobile devices, which enables logistics professionals to visually report the condition of trailers to a central administrative system. The application integrates to a website where colleagues can then view, save and print reports complete with individual notes. The !inspect application is ideal for sharing the condition of equipment, including damage, and each report can contain up to 20 photos. At the CV Show, TIP is offering visitors to their stand a free 180 day trial that will TIP introducing !inspect and fleetRemote enable users to fully evaluate the considerable benefits of using !inspect such as cost and efficiency savings through damage reporting. FleetRemote is a software platform that uses enriched data from the Electronic Braking System to enable transport operators to not only monitor trailer performance and usage but to report on critical failures before they occur by predicting when they will happen. A key function of FleetRemote is the tracking of brake performance; the system has the potential to offer brake performance monitoring and assessment in order to support transport operators’ statutory maintenance and roadworthiness requirements. FleetRemote can be used in conjunction with devices such as iTAP, a unique and innovative product that uses Wi-Fi technology to offload data from a trailer to the system, in addition to reporting aspects of trailer performance to the vehicle driver via its mobile device app. Users can view safety critical warnings such as air leaks, enabling transport operators to continually assess the health and roadworthiness of their equipment and take pre-emptive action in order to prolong the life of components, prevent breakdowns and ensure safety. The system is TCAN compliant, using the latest protocol for EBS data exchange and is a joint development of TIP Trailer Services and Knorr-Bremse.

Stronger growth forecast for the East European Trailer Market in 2016

Recession, sanctions plus the plummeting oil price has had a devastating impact on the outlook for trailer demand in Russia. A year ago 24,000 trailers were wiped from the forecast published in March 2015. Six months ago a further 8,000 trailers were removed from the prognosis. In the current forecast yet another 4,000 trailers have been removed from the Russian outlook. There have also been reductions of 1,200 trailers in Belarus and 500 units in The Ukraine. However, the news for the region is not all negative. In every country, other than those mentioned above, the forecast for trailer demand has improved. Furthermore, the improvements are substantial enough to outweigh the reduced trailer demand in Russia, Belarus and The Ukraine, so that 14,000 trailers have been added to the forecast for the region. New trailer demand will exceed the pre-GFC levels of 2006 in both 2016 and 2017. Even though the outlook for Russia has worsened, 2015 will be the nadir for the market and demand will grow in all years but one to 2020. The Ukraine and Belarus will follow the same pattern. As a consequence Russia, always the largest market for trailers in Eastern Europe until 2010, has fallen behind Turkey and Poland. Similarly the Ukraine and Belarus have been overtaken by Hungary and the Czech Republic. The East European trade in goods reached an all time high at the end of 2013, but the growth was choked off in the second half of 2014, again as a result of the situation in Russia, the Ukraine and Belarus. The economic forecast for Eastern Europe is for two years of positive GDP and investment growth in 2016/17, which will result in recovering levels of trade and more demand for road transport. Only Russia and Belarus will have negative GDP in 2016. In 2016 growth in trailer demand is forecast in all but two of the fifteen countries in the region. Bulgaria and Lithuania will see falls in trailer demand largely as a result of having had very strong trailer sales in 2015. Further market growth in 2017 will be wholly dependent on whether a sustainable recovery is underway in Russia. Gary Beecroft, managing director of CLEAR commented, “2016 will see the strongest growth in the trailer market since 2011, but we will not see the sales of new trailers exceed the 2007/08 levels until after 2020.

Platoon from DAF Trucks, TNO, NXP and Ricardo on its way to EU Truck Platooning Challenge: EcoTwin leaves from Westerlo

"Belgium will strongly support continued development of truck platooning in Europe." With this pledge, Christophe Leurident, advisor to the Belgian Mobility Minister Jacqueline Galant today gave the green light for the departure of the EcoTwin truck platoon in Westerlo, on its way to the European Truck Platooning Challenge. On Wednesday 6 April, the EcoTwin combination, the result of close collaboration between DAF, TNO, NXP and Ricardo, will be greeted at around midday by the Dutch Minister of Infrastructure and the Environment, Schultz van Haegen at Maasvlakte near Rotterdam. The European Truck Platooning Challenge is an initiative introduced by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment, with the aim to gain approval for the large-scale, pan-European testing of truck combinations (‘platoons’) that are linked wirelessly. This functionality enables the trucks to drive on closer following distance, which provides benefits in terms of fuel consumption, CO2emissions, road safety and traffic flow. Kick off European Platooning Challenge at DAF axle and cab Truck Platooning uses automated driving technology to allow trucks to plant in Westerlo, Belgium. From left to right, Christophe Leurident (Advisor Belgian mobility Minister Galant), Ron drive a short distance apart. The second vehicle automatically follows Borsboom (Director of Product Development DAF), Maurice Geraets (Director New Business NXP), Leo Kusters the first using Wi-Fi, radar and cameras. (Managing Director Urbanization TNO), Gert Liefting One unique aspect of the EcoTwin combination is the Wifi-P connection (Managing Director Ricardo Netherlands). developed by NXP. This allows the second truck to respond up to 25 times more quickly than a human-being, and the following truck slows down before our eyes even perceive that the vehicle in front is braking. Wifi-P also allows drivers on board the DAF trucks to talk to one another, and a large screen in the second truck displays what the driver of the first truck can see up ahead (‘See Through’). Continued development required "It goes without saying that a lot of development is still required before we can introduce platooning as a new technology on the road network", says Ron Borsboom, member of DAF Trucks' Board of Management and responsible for product development. "This process will certainly not be completed before 2020. A great deal still has to be sorted out in terms of legislation, liability and acceptance." Up to European politicians "Belgium will do its utmost to enable truck platooning tests on public roads in order to gain more experience", explained Christophe Leurident, advisor to minter Galant. "It's now up to European politicians to make this possible, and together with the Dutch minister Schultz van Haegen, we would like to put our combined weight behind these efforts.

Largest Container Ship Ever to Call to an Irish Port Arrives In the Port of Cork

On Friday 8th April, container ship MV Northern Dedication will berth at the Port of Cork’s Deepwater Berth in Ringaskiddy as part of a weekly scheduled call from Central America to Cork. This container ship is the largest container ship to berth in Ringaskiddy Deepwater Berth and any Irish port. With an overall length of 230m, a deadweight tonnage of 42,121 tonnes, the ship is carrying over 75 containers of fresh fruit, predominately Fyffes bananas. Each container carries in excess of 100,000 bananas. The ship will also discharge containers of pineapples and melons ensuring Ireland’s fresh fruit stocks are kept high. Container Ship MV Northern Despite the size of this vessel, the discharge Dedication calls to Port of Cork operation will take just 6-8 hours, highlighting the Port of Cork’s capability as a Tier 1 port. Vessels of this size are common around the globe nowadays and as the Port of Cork begins their expansion phase in Ringaskiddy, it is anticipated that more of these size vessels will become regular visitors to the Port of Cork. Port of Cork Commercial Manager, Captain Michael McCarthy said: “There are very little restrictions at Ringaskiddy Deepwater Berth, so when it comes to handling a vessel of this size, the port is more than capable. In the future we would hope to see more of these size vessels calling, as our port expands to meet the needs of our own customers and the needs of the global shipping community.” He continued: “This service from Central America to Cork commenced in 2013 and to date it has proven very successful. Bringing mainly Fyffes bananas to Ireland from South America, this service is vitally important for the domestic grocery industry.” In 2015 total container volumes through both Tivoli and Ringaskiddy Container Terminals in the Port of Cork grew by 8% compared to 2014 figures with over 205,000 TEU’s handled IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Conti Hybrid HT3 Trailer Tyre wins iF Design Award

"The Conti Hybrid HT3 445/45 R 19.5 beat more than 5,000 other entries. We accept this award with joy and pride. The iF Design Award recognises the high standards we constantly apply to the development of our tyres in terms of performance, safety, and efficiency – and which of course can be seen in their design as well," explains Constantin Batsch, Vice President Business Region Truck Tires EMEA. The low profile tyre came out on top in the "Product" category and impressed the 58-person panel, made up of international design experts, on account of its design quality, innovation, safety, environmental compatibility, and other criteria. The Conti Hybrid HT3 445/45 R 19.5, offers a highly durable and fuel efficient trailer tyre that has been specially developed for volume transport. Its retreadable carcass improves the carbon footprint of transport companies and makes a positive contribution to sustainable and environmentally friendly goods transportation. Like all tyres from the German premium tyre manufacturer, the Conti Hybrid HT3 445/45 R 19.5 was fully developed at the in-house design department based at Continental's site in Hanover-Stöcken. The design department develops the brand, application and segment-related design concept for all tyre ranges. It is the product designers’ aim to make the tyres’ technical characteristics visible in their designs. The designers also create a distinctive look for each tyre family, linking together all products in a tyre range. In addition, they make sure that the Continental brand can be recognised in each tyre. The iF Design competition has been held annually by the iF International Forum Design GmbH since 1954. The awardwinning products are honored during the official award ceremony which this year was held on February 26, 2016 at BMW Welt in Munich. As part of the award, the Conti Hybrid HT3 445/45 R 19.5 was also on display at the iF Design exhibition in Hamburg. The Conti Hybrid HT3 445/45 R 19.5 is characterised by a high load capacity and excellent service life. With an axle load of 9 tons and a low diameter, the profile of the trailer tyre allows the best use of the 3-metre internal load height, when used on the semitrailers of mega liners. The optimised tyre contour and balanced load distribution results in an even wear pattern on the trailer tyre and contribute to a long service life. Thanks to a 15 percent reduction in rolling resistance compared to its predecessor, the Conti Hybrid HT3 445/45 R 19.5 qualifies for the EU label "B" in the fuel efficiency category. This means the trailer tyre reduces fuel consumption in both regional and long-distance use.

New Fleetminder coming soon

From May 2016, Fleetminder, one the industry leaders in fleet maintenance and workshop management software applications is moving its platform to the cloud. This will be a welcome development for many fleet operators, as in addition to new functionality and a completely redesigned user interface, the product will have an all new, per month, pricing structure, thus eliminating the need for an up-front capital investment. Fleetminder is designed to take the burden out of fleet maintenance by automating essential tasks and reducing both paperwork and administrative tasks. In so doing, the system provides the fleet owner with a full audit trail and instant access to vehicle maintenance records with associated costs. Commenting on the system Graham McCarthy, Marketing Manager of Fleetminder said; “Moving to a cloud platform will mean no upfront costs, no requirement for special hardware and greater flexibility for customers to scale the system as required.” What makes Fleetminder unique is its inbuilt vendor management system. A fleet operator can create a job card and provide secure access to their maintenance unit or to an external maintenance unit or vendor, carrying out work on their vehicles. Once the job card is completed, the operator signs off on the job, the vehicle history is updated and the relevant information is sent to their accounts package, all at the touch of a button. From as little as £59 per month, a fleet operator, irrespective of size, will be able to plan their maintenance, carry out electronic inspections (driver & regulatory), store all asset details in a single location (no more filing) and manage their vendors (tyre suppliers, external maintenance providers mobile fitters, etc.) on a single integrated platform. As with traditional Fleetminder the system will be able to integrate with existing telematics systems and all major accounting systems. A driver inspection app will also be available at a fraction of the cost of the standard inspection booklets, which will link directly to a central console, allowing fleet managers instant access to the status of each vehicle at the beginning of each day. Fleetminders workshop module employs touchscreens, and bar coding scanners, for fitters to add their time and parts to a job card. The ease of use of the system ensures speedy adoption by nontechnical users. It also provides full reporting functionality on workshop labour efficiency and sales and margin analysis. Mr McCarthy went on to say: A free one month’s trial version of the system will be available on Fleetminder’s new website from early May, allowing users to test drive the new software before committing to a purchase. To pre-order your demo system please contact: 01 612 0800 or visit sales@fleetminder.ie

Hiab’s HiVision (TM) revolutionises crane operation with Virtual Reality goggles

Hiab, part of Cargotec, introduces as the first in the industry a new vision system, moving crane operation to the safety and comfort of the truck cabin. "Based on the recent advancements in virtual reality goggles, cameras, and connectivity we have developed a system with cameras on top of the forestry crane, which enables you to see the working area and operate the crane remotely using VR goggles - the HiVision(TM) 3D control system, which is unique in the industry," says Rafal Sornek, Vice President, Technology & Quality Development, Hiab. There are four cameras located in a small box where the operator's head would normally be to enable a realistic 240-degree view for the HiVision(TM) operator, who controls the crane from the truck cabin. When the operator turns his head the goggle image switches from two forward-looking cameras to two sideways cameras. Henrik Strömbäck from JS Frakt AB pre-tested HiVision(TM) at Hiab's R&D facility in Hudiksvall, Sweden. He has 20 years' of experience from timber hauling. "The system exceeded my expectations. For sure, it's very different compared to the traditional way. Still, there's no need to relearn the way you work," Strömbäck tells. "You don't have to climb out in the cold - everything is close by and you can start loading immediately when you arrive at the working site. You have a surprisingly wide field of vision."

Seeing the future Sornek has a clear long-term vision for HiVision(TM). "In the future the operator doesn't even have to be in the truck, but operates remotely from a distance, saving costs. I'm a strong believer that we rather soon will have driverless trucks on the roads, and it makes no sense to have crane operators sitting on these waiting passively to get to the site. One person could even operate several trucks remotely," he says. Another driver for remote crane operation is everstringent safety regulations. Sornek says that vision systems such as HiVision(TM) might even become compulsory and replace unprotected top seats. "We want to be the safety forerunner in our industry, complying with regulations even before they become the actual law."

Biggest ever workshop zone at CV Show 2016

A bigger, better and busier Workshop Zone will be one of the key attractions at this year’s CV Show, which takes place at the NEC, Birmingham, from April 26-28. This year sees the largest ever Workshop Zone in Hall 4. Visitors will get to see an allencompassing shop window, featuring hundreds of exhibitors that span the whole automotive aftermarket and CV maintenance sector. From original equipment components and replacement parts to the very latest in maintenance management systems, garage and body shop equipment, the Workshop Zone will play host to exhibitors who can provide it all. CV Show Director, Rob Skelton, said: “With compliance being a more important issue than ever and the need for regular maintenance being vital for operators of light or heavy commercial vehicles, high maintenance standards are critical for all operators in the commercial vehicle sector, from the lightest of vans to the heaviest of plant. With the Workshop Zone, we wanted to bring all of those elements together in one focused area of the show, making it easier for visitors to meet potential suppliers and compare services and costs.” Leading exhibitors in the Workshop Zone include AC Hydraulic, Blitz Rotary, Bowmonk, CGE, Cormach, DEA-Worky, Eclipse, Gemco, Maha, National Windscreens, Pichler Tools, Pro-Align, Somers Totalkare, Serenco, Sykes-Pickavant, Tecalemit, Thermobile, Turnkey Instruments, Valeo and V-Tec. There’ll also be impressive stands from vehicle wash equipment suppliers, such as Istobal, Karcher, Washtec and Wilcomatic. The Workshop Zone at the CV Show is supported by both the Garage Equipment Association (GEA) and the Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF). Another area of the CV business that will be well represented this year is the tyre industry. The right choice of tyre is critical to efficient commercial vehicle operation at all ends of the market, with running costs and safety being the key considerations for most operators. Visitors will be able to see the latest ranges from manufacturers Aeolus, Bridgestone, Continental, Double Coin, Goodyear, Hankook, GITI, Pirelli and Sailun. Also present will be independent tyre wholesaler RH Claydon and Bandvulc Group with its high quality re-treads. ATSEuromaster and Kwik-Fit also have stands at the Show and will present their specialist maintenance and repair services, all designed to improve fleet performance. The future of the CV industry will also play a major part in this year’s show, which once again plays host to the Manufacturing Institute’s ‘Make It’ Challenge. This year’s challenge will run on each day of the show, and will give 140 1214 year old students the opportunity to see what makes the industry move, including areas such as safety, efficiency and telematics. The students will be tasked with designing, building and ultimately presenting their idea to a team of industry ‘dragons’. The CV Show is the largest and most comprehensive road transport event staged in Britain, catering for every operator’s business needs. It will take place in Halls 3a, 4 and 5 at the NEC in Birmingham from 26 -28 April. Visitors can register for their free ticket at www.cvshow.com

Cork Company Celtic Tugs Purchases New Tug

Cork shipping company Celtic Tugs, a subsidiary of Irish Mainport Holdings, have purchased a new Tug which arrived into Ringaskiddy Deepwater Berth in the Port of Cork on 31st March. The new tug is expected to rejuvenate the company’s existing fleet of three tugs already owned and in operation by Celtic Tugs. Currently named ‘Efesan Port’, initially registered in August 2015 under the Turkish flag, the new tug will be renamed in the coming days to ‘Celtic Fergus’ and will operate under an Irish flag. The 24/45tbp tug was designed & modified by New Tug ‘Celtic Fergus’ well-known Canadian designer Robert Allan Ltd arriving at Port of Cork and have a pair of CAT 3512 high speed diesel deepwater berth in Ringaskiddy engines driving Schottel SRP 1012 FP propellers. The tug is able to serve as a fire fighting vessel with the help of an engine driven firefighting pump. In addition to frequency controlled electrical driven fore towing anchor winch, the vessels are fitted with aft towing winches and rescue boat crane for long distance towage. Bigger and better Organisers of any event will tell you that is difficult to keep improving on the previous year’s show, but Kevin Mulqueen and Colin Hegarty continuously achieve this with their Full of the Pipe Truck Show.

N

ow in its seventh year, Full of the Pipe has become an integral part of the haulage industry’s calendar as once again the event will take place at the Cavan Equestrian Centre on the weekend of June 11th and 12th. And once again, Kevin and Colin have promised to deliver on more improvements to the already very popular show. Their cause has been helped by the fact that the equestrian centre has been extended in size with a new sand arena being added since last year’s show. Kevin revealed that the interest in this year’s show has been greater than in other years as truckers from all over are set to attend. “We have had a lot of enquiries about this year’s show, more than previous years. We have been promoting our show at other events and will continue to do that right up until June,” said Kevin. “There are a number of trucks coming from the UK and further afield, which will be great to see and there will be a lot of specialised trucks there also.” Kevin added that as always the event will cater for all with many attractions and trade stalls on display over the course of the two days. “There will be a lot more trade stands at this year’s show, while we will also have attractions for the kids, which help make it a family day out. “Live music will be played on the Saturday night, while a number of DJs are to play over the course of the weekend. The whole show will be broadcast live on Phoenix radio station, while Marty Mone of ‘Slip

the Clutch’ fame will also be in attendance.” Unlike other truck shows, Full of the Pipe offer a personal touch and the aim of the weekend is for attendees to enjoy the weekend and relax, taking time out from their hectic schedules. “We like to meet and great every trucker that attends the show. This is all about unwinding and having the craic. Truckers are welcome to enter the various categories we have, but it is certainly not all about that.” Hauliers are a proud bunch and a lot of work is put in to the trucks before they head for Cavan, usually at a great expense. “Truckers certainly go that extra bit to ensure that their trucks are in pristine condition. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes and that includes from our own point of view. The art work, polishing, time, effort and money that is put into these trucks is phenomenal. Great credit is due to the owners, hauliers and truck drivers.” As the show grows, so too does the cost of running it and each year, it has become more expensive and Kevin admitted that it would not be possible to run the event without the generosity of their sponsors, many of who have been with them years. “We are very fortunate with the sponsors that we have. Once again Boreman Ltd is the main sponsor. Moran Signs are also on board again. They both have given us great support over the years, while we have the likes of prestigious companies like Westward Scania and Applegreen on board this year also. Reflect Auto Care, Harris

Truck Centre, Truck Tech, Midland Tyre Centre and XADO Ireland are also top sponsors. “We can never have enough sponsors, but without the guys that are supporting us, there would be no show. Each year, it becomes more expensive to run and I’d like to thank all our sponsors for their support.” Registration for the event will be on the weekend of the show starting from Friday afternoon and closing at 2pm on Saturday and Kevin has urged anyone attending to come early to avoid disappointed. “Trucks will be taken in on a first come first serve basis and there are a limited number of places available, so every one should come early. We are urging truckers on arrival to wait to be attended before parking. This will make life so much easier for everyone.” This year the categories have been simplified and reduced in number with trucks attending being charged €30, while passengers cost €10. Adults attending must pay €10, while under-10s go free. “It is a cheap day or weekend out for anyone that attends. Once again our chosen charity is Heart Children Ireland with a good percentage of what’s made going to them.” Kevin concluded the organising never ends and it is ongoing for 12 months of the year. “There is a massive amount of work involved and you would think that it gets easier with each year that passes, but that is not the case. Nonetheless, we enjoy it and so do all that attend, so we’re looking forward to this year’s event and hopefully as always everything will run smoothly.”

The dedicated and committed team at Walker Recycling

A work in progress Waste Management Consultant Paul Canavan of Global Material Recycling talks positively about the range of services provided by Walker Recycling Services. Headquartered at Clonkeen, Portlaoise, Co Laois, the progressive company has ambitions plans in place for the future.

E

stablished in 2007 by Robert Walker, Walker Recycling Services specialises in the recycling of farm waste plastics and are renowned for providing an efficient and cost effective service to its customers. The fundamentals were sound but, not content to rest on his laurels, proprietor Robert Walker put a management team in place back in 2014, spearheaded by Paul Canavan and Tom Lyons of Galway firm Global Material Recycling. Tasked with conducting an overview of the business and its modus operandi,

their primary aim was to establish Walker Recycling as Ireland's leading agricultural recycling contractor. And, with a wealth of experience and expertise, the management team is well placed to help the company achieve its goal. Over the last two years, management has been working exceptionally hard behind the scenes in overseeing a major investment and expansion in an effort to ensure Walker Recycling Services realises its full potential. “Along with John Slevin (accountant)

and Gary O'Keeffe (Robert Walker's financial advisor), we were brought in to develop the business,” explained Global Material Recycling's Paul Canavan. “And, developing the business means ensuring that Walker Recycling Services are the single biggest contractor for the Irish Farmers Film Producers Group. “We run approximately 100 collection days for farmers where they can bring their agricultural film in to us, from end of March to end of July, sometimes into August, and 10,000 to 12,000 tonnes of material is collected on these days. They process farm plastics such as bale wraps and pit covers. They also take in manure bags (the big bags must have the inserts removed) and also spray cans (all bags and cans must be bagged separate). Walker Recycling has an environmentally committed track record which means you can be assured that all activities are carried out in compliance with the requirements of the Waste Management Acts, all relevant Health and Safety legislation and codes of practice. It's the management team's job to finetune operations and build on the company's solid foundations. To that end, they have put together a five year roadmap for the business. Underpinned by substantial investment, they are beginning to see the fruits of their labour. The company's Clonkeen headquarters has undergone a facelift inside the last year. “We've concreted the yard which has given us 5,500 sq ft of extra storage for incoming material. In addition, we've IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

introduced systems into the plant to reduce contamination of the material and improve recycling efficiency while we've invested in a couple of new vehicles to help with the smooth running of the collection days. “It's about planning for the future and keeping Walker Recycling Services going as a successful company,” Paul added. “We renewed our contract with the Irish Farm Film Producers Group last

April and there are four years left on that while are currently working on landing other contracts. “The company has been doing pretty well and we want to explore its potential further. We invested a lot of money last year, a five year business plan was drawn up and so far it is looking good. “Our intention is to develop further. A good combination G

Every company that produces a product relies on the transport industry to ensure that their merchandise reaches its destination.

oods must be delivered in the condition they were picked up, while time constraints are something that hauliers must contend with on a daily basis. The transport industry is the glue that holds the economy in Ireland together and without it, the country would virtually come to a standstill. Every business needs a reliable haulage firm to carry out their work and trust plays a massive part in obtaining contracts. One of the country’s leading Irish supplier and exporter of Wholesale Fish Products Ó Catháin Iasc Teo has entrusted all their transport needs in one of their own, Dingle Transport Ltd.

Ó Catháin Iasc Teo is a family run business established in 1975, and one of Ireland's premier producers of wholesale fresh and frozen pelagic and demersal Irish fish for export. Raw materials are sourced from the southern Irish fleet and goes from the fishing grounds to our processing plant within a matter of hours. Dingle Transport Ltd is owned and operated by Liam Courtney and Fenian Richard Keane since they first established the business in 1995. Ricky is also managing director of O'Cathain Iasc Teo and Liam worked for the company for many years before the opportunity arose to start his own business alongside his new partner.

“I had been working for the company for a few years beforehand when Ricky and I decided to set up the haulage company. We do all the work for O'Cathain Iasc Teo as well as other general haulage,” Liam told this month’s edition of Irish Trucker. Situated in Dingle, Co Kerry, this haulage firm operates throughout Ireland, the U.K and Europe. The main core of the business is delivering fish to outlets mainly on the continent, but they also do general haulage for other companies, while

between the months of September and March they transport offal to Killybegs for processing. “We are kept busy all year round and we often use a number of other hauliers in the area when we get busier. A lot of the work is spread out.” Liam revealed that sub-contracting some of the work meant that they hadn’t to expand too big, a situation that some hauliers around the country fell into and unfortunately paid the price during the recession. “We are happy to stick with what we have. Some companies got too big during the boom and they couldn’t cope when the recession hit, we have always stayed small in our own right and that has stood us well over the years.” IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Liam and Ricky operate a fleet of five trucks, all of which are Scania, while they have an extensive range of trailers with the plant being kept in pristine condition. “We would focus a lot on maintenance, with the time constraints in this industry, you cannot afford breakdowns, so it is essential that both the trucks and trailers are looked after.” When dealing with any food product, health and safety is paramount and Liam stressed that they placed a huge emphasis on this area. “All our work is done to the highest hygiene and quality standards. We apply the full HACCP quality control system to all stages of production.” HACCP is a systematic approach to identifying and controlling hazards

(microbiological, chemical and physical) that could pose a threat to the production of safe food. In simple terms, it involves identifying what could go wrong and planning to prevent it. “The trailers would be washed down after every load. The main types of fish that we would be hauling are Mackerel, Herring, Horse Mackerel, Spratt and Tuna.” With the facilities to produce and freeze 100 tonnes of fish product a day, Liam and his team are busy working out of the plant on a daily basis. “The trucks are on the road for as many hours as is legally possible. Like I said, we sub out a lot of the work also, and this works very well. “We can deliver to any part of Europe,

e Wyse choice Wyse Transport has been providing scheduled sea, air and road freight haulage services for all industries in Ireland and across Europe for 15 years now. Irish Trucker caught up with company director Ken Maher to find out more.

The company was established in 2001 by Ken Maher and Bernard White and has since grown to become one of the most recognised road freight brands on Irish and UK roads for imports and exports both to and from Ireland. Being located close to Dublin Airport, the M50, M1 and Dublin Port Tunnel gives the company easy access to all national routes, Dublin Port and the airport. At present Wyse Transport employs close to 40 staff across all of their distribution and logistics management services, as Ken himself explained. “We employ 37 staff here at the moment and are celebrating 15 years in business this year,” he stated. “Myself and Bernard founded the company back in 2001 and we would

have both came from a transport background, you could say. We felt that we both knew the industry well enough and decided to take a gamble and thankfully things have turned out well.” Ken’s background saw him working in the freight and transport industry for 15 years and he is a CPC Licence holder and manages the day to day operations for the company. He is responsible for managing the customer interaction from blue chip companies, multinationals to SME’s importing and exporting to and from Ireland. Bernard is responsible for the UK & European operations of Wyse Transport. Prior to establishing Wyse Transport, he had worked in the haulage and transport business for 20 years. Ask Ken what he sees as being the key to success in this line of work and he’ll point out one thing in particular. “I think reliability in this industry is a huge factor,” the company’s co-director stated. “I think it’s one of the main reasons why our customers choose us first, because 10 out of 10 times we’re there for them. Our drivers are our ambassadors really and we make sure that we have the best drivers here.” So what is that the company

specialises in exactly? Wyse Transport is acknowledged as a specialist in the transport of products in the pharmaceutical, aviation and horticultural sectors. They also provide general transport services throughout Ireland. With professional drivers that are highly experienced and trained to manage all the requirements of customers, Wyse Transport’s development has come through continued partnership with its clients where they work together to manage their customers transport and haulage requirements. They continue to work from multinationals to sole traders in the management of their logistics on an outsourced basis. During the economic downturn, Wyse

Transport was no different to any company in Ireland in that it felt the effects of the recession. However, one of their head men is happy to report that things have improved considerably as of late. “Business has picked up an awful lot in the last year or so,” said Ken. “We feel like things have turned a corner in this country and the way we see it, it’s onwards and upwards from here.” The company’s extensive fleet is another example of commitment to the highest standard of quality and service through every aspect of the business. conscious of customer needs, it had built its reputation on designing and manufacturing high-quality, job-specific machinery at affordable prices. Founder and recently-retired managing director Jim McInerney, who oversaw the development of the family business over the decades, has every reason to be proud as he reflects on the genesis of this wonderful success story: “We were one of the primary companies that was set up in Shannon Industrial Estate with the help of the IDA in 1970 to manufacture goods as import substitution. We then got into the mining industry and became one of the sole suppliers of consumerables for that industry, including safety equipment like rock bolts and supports and chains etc. “We were the only company in Ireland manufacturing rock support equipment supplying the mine industry is still our main line of work today. “As a supplier to the mining industry, we never really experienced any major boom during the Celtic Tiger years because lead and zinc prices weren’t great. But we kept on producing quality equipment for our customers.” It was almost exactly 20 years ago that the world-renowned Stonehall Shunty was conceived. “We started to develop the Shunty range in 1995 and spent seven years developing it. We were the first in Ireland to produce a telescopic boom truck-mounted forklift and it was much better than the standard masted machines. We’ve been producing them since ’97 and have successfully sold them into various markets all over the world. “Competition was fierce and, even though we had an excellent product, we found it difficult to compete with major

This iconic truck-mounted forklift is designed and manufactured in Clare

competitors, who controlled the industry. We didn’t have the same resources and didn’t get any subsidies. “In 2008, because of the downturn in construction here and also abroad in key markets like Canada, Australia and the United States, we stepped back production and began manufacturing to order only. Today, we produce exclusively to order. We no longer mass produce as it takes a lot of capital to do so and you could end up with stock just lying around. Instead, we take orders from customers who appreciate the Shunty and we manufacture these as per their requirements.” Thus, it has become a very exclusive product and a very personal service is guaranteed (including excellent aftersales support). “Only for the support we have got over the years from friends and family, we would never have made it this far,” Jim continues. “We never got any State aid and have remained a wholly-independent family business.” The Stonehall Shunty is a maintenancefree product with an exceptional reputation. In conjunction with input from customers around the globe, Stonehall Engineering

continues to effect minor tweaks and improvements even to this day. “We supply Europe, Australia, America and Canada. At times, we have to refuse some orders because we could be over capacity. “On the domestic market, there are a lot of customers who would have bought the product ten or 15 years ago, who still use them. We still offer them a full back-up service. This forklift was at least ten years ahead of its time. You could change the cosmetic appearance of it every now and then, but, on the inside, it has pretty much the same internal workings that it always had.” Recently retired but still involved in the business in an advisory capacity, Jim is joined in the running of Stonehall Engineering by wife Ann and children Chris and Linda. “We have a crew of ten people, with the production line having been streamlined,” he notes. Jim is proud that the Stonehall Shunty can be found today in all corners of the planet. “Yeah, you’d find them on HGVs all over the world,” he concludes. “There are in smaller volumes to some of our competitors but they are still there nevertheless. This was a special machine in that it concentrated largely on two-three tonne vehicles associated with the construction industry – for hardware products etc. – but it has a lot of other uses and its flexibility is one of its many strengths.” The Stonehall Shunty is a wonderful innovation which continues to stand the test of time; a lasting legacy for which Jim and his company will forever be recognised.

Gordon Bell with his pride and joy

Gordon Bell, Arnold Bell and driver Patrick McWilliams

Gordon Bell & Son has many strings to its bow Gordon Bell & Son is a long-established and highly-regarded company specialising in truck, trailer, van and crane service and repair, truck and trailer sales, haulage contracting, trailer hire, roller brake testing and spare parts. Strategically located in the heart of mid-Ulster, the family-run concern continues to go from strength to strength after nearly 60 years in business.

A

man of many talents, Gordon had begun his working life in the family farm contracting business.

In 1958, Gordon decided to go out on his own and purchased his first truck, a V8 Ford petrol engine, initially supplying sand, gravel and agricultural lime to local farmers. A few years later, he started making concrete blocks. Then in 1967, Gordon and his family moved to Melbourne, Australia before returning to Magherafelt three years later. “My father gained a wealth of experience in coach building, quarry plant building and maintenance of ready use concrete trucks in Australia, which has helped to make the business what it is today explains Arnold, who has been a partner with his father in Gordon Bell & Son since the mid-1980s. On returning to Ireland, Gordon resumed supplying agricultural lime and designed a conveyor belt to speed up the process of loading the lime onto trailers. He also got into the business of buying and selling trucks, something which continues to be a key

part of Gordon Bell & Son. In the mid1980s, Gordon secured a contract with local company Carmean Limeworks to transport their limestone products all over Ireland. Around the same time, Arnold started carrying out truck and trailer maintenance for both Gordon Bell & Son and other hauliers in the area. An increase in Northern Ireland’s gross vehicle weight rating saw the family branch into fitting axles onto lorries and trailers, and carrying out chassis extensions. When they began hauling logs from forests in Co. Donegal in the late 1980s, it led to the Bell’s offering a new crane maintenance and fitting service. Among the companies they fitted cranes for were BA Engineering in Cookstown, Co. Tyrone and MV Commercials in Edinburgh. During the same period, truck and trailer sales became a major part of the business, IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

while the haulage side continued to expand also thanks to regular work for the likes of Acheson & Glover, Lissan Coal Company and Balcas. In the mid-1990s, the family sold their six-strong haulage fleet in order to concentrate on growing the maintenance and repair side of the business. Gordon Bell & Son still runs a single MAN articulated truck and Kelberg tipper trailer which are dedicated to working for Creagh Concrete in Toomebridge, Co. Antrim. Creagh Concrete is recognised as one of the largest and most innovative producers of concrete products for a diverse range of market sectors throughout Ireland and the UK. In more recent times, Gordon Bell & Son has begun specialising in aluminium welding and the repair of tipper bodies. It was also one of the first companies in the

area to install roller brake testing equipment for the annual road worthiness test at its busy three-bay workshop in Moneymore, Magherafelt. There are four staff employed in the business, including a full-time driver. While Arnold now directs operations, he continues to receive tremendous support and advice from his parents. “We’ve always enjoyed new challenges and have never been afraid to try different things,” Arnold proudly states. “The latest thing we’ve got into is coach and bus maintenance. We have a large and loyal customer-base from as far away as Co. Laois. Customer service is key for us. As most of our customers have one vehicle and are relying on it to making a living, the onus is on us to ensure downtime is kept to a minimum. A coach operator will have school runs in the

morning and afternoon, so we have a very small window in which to repair his vehicle. “In terms of sales, we have many contacts in the UK from which we can source quality used trucks, trailers and cranes for our clients. The success of our company is also down to having good suppliers. Our association with JM Autoparts and South Derry Coachworks means we’re able to get next-day delivery

on any truck, trailer and coach parts we need. “Our location on the A29 means we are no more than an hour away from any part of Ulster.” As the countdown to the 60th anniversary of Gordon Bell & Son continues, the company’s founder has taken on the task of restoring a 1971 ERF (Ernest Robert Foden)articulated truck. As an independent and family-run business, Kilkenny Couriers can offer its customers a service you won’t get anywhere else. “Unlike the big courier franchises, we’re able to offer our customers the personal touch. Chambers Coaches’ new Irizar i6 Integral is the first Euro 6 53-seateer in Northern Ireland

Luxurious coach hire Synonymous with luxury coach hire, Chambers Coaches has been given a new lease of life since Glenshane Coaches took over the operation little over two years ago. The company had lapsed in recent times, however, Glenshane Coaches who already had a presence in the coach hire sector, took over operations and set about the task of breathing new life into this sleeping giant. a stunning and flexible fleet of premium, executive coaches. “Glenshane Coaches took over Chambers in November 2013” reflects office manager Francis Traynor. “Slowly but surely, Chambers are becoming noticed on the roads again. The combination of the strong brand and the striking colour ensure Chambers stand out from the crowd.” Between Chambers Coaches and Glenshane Coaches, they oversee a fleet of 20, from 16seater up to 57-seater. decade since the owner first dipped his toe into the coachhire sector, he has certainly made quite an impact. While the Chambers name is associated with luxury coach hire and executive travel, Glenshane Coaches [winner of Most Improved Operator at the Federation of Passenger Transport Northern Ireland awards 2015] are also of a very high standard. Chambers Coaches provide private coach hire solutions, covering a wide-ranging customer base, including sport, tours, day trips, airport transfers etc. The high esteem in which they are held can be gauged with a quick glance at some of the prestigious clients served in the sporting world – Ulster rugby, the Ireland rugby team, and Antrim and Derry GAA – alongside a number of local University, GAA, Rugby, Soccer and other sports teams / clubs and supporters. “We also cover a lot of tour work providing coaches for other large tour operators throughout Europe, the UK Mainland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland as well as a lot of local private hire, including weddings, day

trips, church groups etc.” Resurrecting this renowned business has required substantial investment, including the brand-new acquisition last summer of the first Scania Irizar i6, Euro 6, 53-seater in Northern Ireland, which took its place in a fleet that also includes four Irizar PB Scania’s. The eyecatching i6, which affords the driver ample space and passengers a smooth and

quiet journey as it glides across the terrain, boast 53 half-leather PB seats with foot rests, full carpet, a twin monitor / DVD system, toilet and reversing camera and is powered by DAF’s MX11 271 Euro 6 engine with fullyautomatic Ecolife transmission. “It’s been a huge financial commitment since ’13,” Francis confirms. “Chambers had to invest in the best

coaches to back up the name and instil confidence. Chambers initially bought four PB Scania’s and soon added a 29-seater Riada. We are always renewing and updating our fleet. The new i6 is our flagship model at the minute. It’s a real luxury touring coach, although I need to stress that all the other vehicles are luxurious as well”. “You have to have great

coaches and you have to keep the tour operators impressed. You need to keep renewing and refreshing the fleet, especially with some tour operators insisting on three-year-old coaches or younger.” Rodney Gallagher is a hands-on owner-driver, who is also a qualified mechanic and carries out a lot of in-house fleet maintenance alongside his father, John (who also drives), and one other specialist mechanic (Joe). It’s very much a family affair, with Rodney’s wife, Anne, working as transport manager. Two large garage facilities are located on-site, stocked with all the latest tools and diagnostic equipment as well as pits, lifts etc. Bodywork is also carried out in-house. “We hire anything up to 20 or 30 drivers at any given time, including ten full-time,” Francis continues. “Good drivers can be hard to find so we are fortunate to have a good nucleus of people there to call upon. They are local and flexible and they complement the experienced core of full-time drivers perfectly.” All in all, the signs are very encouraging for Chambers Coaches going forward. “We’re back on the map and slowly but surely getting the name back out there again,” Francis concludes. “The Chambers name is synonymous with luxury coach hire and that’s what we are providing. We are getting the Best Wishes To Chambers Coaches, from customers back but it’s a tough, competitive industry so there’s no room for complacency, so we’ll keep investing and striving to provide the best possible service.” Between Glenshane Coaches and Chambers Coaches, a fleet of 20 units provides passengers with supreme comfort and convenience.

here are many trials and tribulations to be dealt with when owning your own business, especially in the haulage industry which is arguably the most competitive sector of the lot. Overheads in this industry mean that one wrong decision can leave a business crippled and indeed the latest recession to hit this country unfortunately saw a number of haulage firms shut down their engines for good. So for any business in this sector to be celebrating their 20th anniversary in 2016, they have many reasons to celebrate such an achievement. For this month’s edition of Irish Trucker, we profile one such company as Carlow based Alan Agar Haulage Ltd celebrates twenty years in business. Established in 1996, Alan himself, has worked hard to develop the business, although he admits that becoming a haulage operator was not something he had planned on doing. “I kind of got involved in the haulage industry by accident. I served my time as a mechanic before I went to Germany where I worked cutting timber. When I came home, a friend of my father who had a cattle lorry was giving it up and he asked would I be interested in taking over, which I did,” said Alan. “A few years later, I started to draw Sugar Beet and did that for a few years before that all came to a halt. Fortunately, I had picked up a bit of work with Roadstone by this stage and I’m still working with them as well as Morrissey’s where we do a bit of tipper work. “We also do some container work for Slaney Meats and refrigerated work for Ballon Meats, while during the summer I would do a bit of timber work as well. Grassland in Kilkenny, Thompson Engineering and Dowling Chemicals are other customers of ours.” Alan admitted that following the Christmas period, business was slow to resume as is usually the case, but the arrival of a brand new Scania R560 signals their intent for the remainder of the year. “After Christmas is always slow for a month or so, but we have a good bit of work coming up. I bought the new Scania from KD Garage Services Ltd in Wexford and I’m delighted with it so far. “There is a fleet of five trucks here now, two Volvos, a Scania and two Renaults. They are very competent at what they do and it’s great to know that they will do the job to the best of their capabilities.” Beside every good man is a good woman as they say and Alan’s wife Leesa ensures that the books and administration side of the business is kept up to scratch.

hile, the housing sector may still be slow enough, there is work ongoing in other areas of the industry as the development of schools, corporate businesses and roads are keeping the majority of those involved in this sector busy. which are a specialised area catered for by a few companies around the country. When it comes to providing a top quality service in this sector, there are few to rival Clare based Atlantic Plant Hire & Contract Crushing Ltd. Established in 2005 by Gearoid O’Callaghan, this firm has grown over the last eleven years and from its base in Kilkee, a nationwide service is on offer

that covers a wide range of work. The background to the business has seen Gearoid diversify from one sector to another over the years. “I would have had a background in Agrihire, but I always had an interest in construction and decided to offer a service in that and the business grew from there,” said Gearoid. “These days all our work is construction based.”

Gearoid and his sister Catriona who is also a director of the company have worked hard over the years to develop the business into what it is today. Services include providing a comprehensive range of plant and machinery like a range of diggers from 13 to 70 tonnes, different types of crushers including jaw, impact and cone. Rock breakers, screeners, bull dozers,

loading shovels and low loader shovels are also available for hire with or without an operator. “Our broad range of equipment for hire includes excavators, rock-breakers, dump trucks, tractor & dump trailers, bulldozers, drilling rigs, crushers, screeners and Low-loaders. “We have a massive range of machinery and one thing we have going

for us is that we are sure to have the machine that fits the customers’ needs. “We are competitively priced also, while we have a highly trained staff with all of our drivers being fully trained and having the proper certs necessary to operate the machinery. “We operate nationwide, providing a full service of plant hire, contract crushing, drilling and blasting and low loader services, for contract or hire, but the majority of our work would take place in the Munster and Connacht regions.” Gearoid revealed that major investment has been placed into the business with the machinery being upgraded on a regular basis. “Our machines are maintained regularly and updated yearly to reduce breakdowns and increased durability and productivity. Just before Christmas, a new Sandvik Crusher was bought as well as a 52 tonne excavator and that came from Whelan Plant Sales in Ennis. We would do a lot of business with them and find them very good to deal with.” Gearoid added that they have a number of contracts ongoing at the moment which is keeping them busy for the foreseeable future.

“At the moment, there are jobs ongoing in the Galway Wind Park, which is located between Moycullen and Oughterard. We are also working on the N17 Tuam motorway where we are doing a lot of blasting and crushing. “The crushers are brought to the site and the rock is recycled for the base of the roads. Another job we have on at the moment is at the Moneypoint Power Station which is Ireland's largest electricity generation station and only coal-fired power station.” Atlantic Plant Hire uses the motto that no job is too big or small and they are happy to take on any work no matter what the size of the task may be. “Our work varies from job to job and nothing would be too small for us. We would still do a lot of work for a number of quarry businesses in the area and these are customers that have been with us from the very start.” Through their own quarry, they can offer all grades of crushed stone, all grades of clean stone, drainage stone and shale, which means that on any given job, they can offer a full range of services. Drilling and blasting is a skilled service that takes a great deal of preparation with safety being paramount throughout this procedure. “We provide a complete blasting service. We have drilling and blasting licences as well as a shotfirer licence. Health & Safety is of the utmost importance to us and all our employees are very experienced when it comes to

this area.” Atlantic Plant Hire also does land reclamation, site work, bulk earth moving, making them one of the leading providers of this type of work. “We are happy with the direction that the business is going. We can certainly notice an Atlantic Plant Hire & Contract Crushing Ltd is one of the most upturn in the progressive companies in the country industry and hopefully that will managed to keep going, so we have continue for some time to come. perating from a fully licensed four-acre waste management site, the company buys in all ferrous and non-ferrous metals at the best prices available. It has specialised in the removal and processing of scrap metal since the late Gerald Hamill started the business from humble beginnings 67 years ago. Ferrous metal is metal from iron and steel. This includes household products, redundant farm machinery, garage scrap, construction scrap, redundant plant and machinery, and factory steel. Non-ferrous metal is anything other than iron and steel, e.g. cooper, lead, brass and aluminium. The processed scrap metal is exported in baled and pallet form to customers in England who demand a top quality and professional service. “We pride ourselves in being a longestablished family business, our commitment to customer service and being able to offer the most competitive prices for scrap metal,” explains general manager Peter McCluskey, who is a grandson of the company’s founder. “By treating our customers fairly, we receive a lot of repeat business. When customers deal with us, they know they are getting the best price that’s out there. We offer a warm and friendly service and have established a reputation for honesty and integrity over many years.” Since Gerald Hamill’s passing in 1990, the company has continued to expand and prosper under the guidance of his son Maurice. The recycling plant in Portadown receives scrap metal from customers in counties Armagh, Down, Tyrone and Monaghan, while scrap is

also collected from local factories and manufacturing plants where roll-on, rolloff systems are in operation. There are separate weighbridges on site for ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Here, trained staff will assist you in grading, unloading and correctly weighing your scrap metal before payment is received. The Portadown facility is equipped to handle and process all scrap materials. Among the equipment used to separate and handle the scrap during the recycling process are Fuchs and Liebherr scrap handlers and a Hitachi excavator with shear grab. In addition, there are two trucks – a Volvo FH12 and a Volvo FL6 with hiab crane – on the road full-time. The export side of things is looked after by local company Anfield Transport, which provides a regular cross-channel service to Britain. Anfield Transport runs a selection of curtainside, flat and extendable trailers as well as low loaders. Founded in 1979, it also has facilities in Liverpool and Birmingham to accommodate its part load and groupage operation. Gerald Hamill & Sons is fully compliant with all environmental regulations and holds waste management and waste carriers licenses. It is licenced by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) for all scrap materials with the exception of End of Life Vehicle (ELV), refrigerators, gas bottles and beer kegs. All hazardous waste is removed from the site in compliance with EU regulations. Whatever the legislation, the Hamill team has always complied with it. consortium comprising Marguerite Fund, InfraRed Capital Partners, John Sisk & Sons (Holdings) Ltd, Lagan Construction Group, Strabag SE and Roadbridge, DirectRoute (Tuam) Ltd signed a contract with the Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) in April 2014 for the financing, design, construction, operation and maintenance of the scheme, which is valued at €257 million. As part of the outgoing Government’s Infrastructure Stimulus package, the project was procured via a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. The N17 / N18 Gort to Tuam PPP Scheme forms part of the Atlantic corridor outlined under Transport 21. It involves the design and construction of a new road to replace the existing N17 and N18 between the Co. Galway towns of Gort and Tuam. The existing N17 and N18 will thereafter be reclassified as regional roads. The scheme bypasses several adjacent towns, including Athenry, to remove traffic bottlenecks. It is designed to accommodate national through traffic flows and will significantly improve safety and reduce journey times for traffic travelling north-south along the West of Ireland. The new road will also improve connectivity between the Western Region and Dublin and will significantly assist the economic development of the BMW (Borders, Midlands and Western) regions. The project road commenced at the northern end of the N18 Crusheen to Gort scheme which opened to traffic in

74

November 2010. The route will be of motorway standard from Gort to the junction at Kilmore, just south of Tuam, which is a distance of 53.2km. The alignment then continues with a dual carriageway Type 2 cross section, following a route to the west of Tuam town centre, to its end point on the N17 north of Tuam at Mountpotter, which is a distance of just over 4km. The alignment follows a largely greenfield route with mainly grade-separate junctions at Kiltiernan Interchange (connecting to the existing N18), Rathmorrissey (connecting to the M6 Dublin-Galway motorway), Annagh Hill (connecting to the N63), Kilmore (connecting to the N17) and Ballygaddy Road interchange (connecting to Ballygaddy Road). The construction of the project road commenced in March 2015 and will take approximately three years to complete. It is planned to have the new road open to traffic in its entirety in early 2018. Works on regional and local roads traversing the mainline will in general be open to traffic once they are complete. “We are delighted to be associated with this scheme,” Paraic McCarthy, project manager with Roadbridge explains. “There are around 800 people employed overall and 180 of those are directly employed by Roadbridge. We enjoy an excellent working relationship with the other companies in the consortium. DirectRoute was formed over 10 years ago and in that time has

completed a number of PPP schemes, including the N8 Rathcormac to Fermoy Bypass and the M7 Limerick tunnel. But this is our biggest road project to date.” DirectRoute are pleased with the progress to date on the project. In November 2015, the company passed a significant milestone in achieving one million working hours on site without a reportable injury. While the earthworks have progressed very well to date, the emphasis changed to rock extraction and processing with the onset of winter. In cut areas, the soft cut excavation is substantially complete. The peat removal is also substantially completed, vertical drainage has been installed and consolidation works are ongoing with further layers to be in these areas in the first quarter of 2016. Earthworks fill has been completed in a number of sections across the project and is being followed by the placement of capping layers. Work on structures across the project is very well established and the levels of activity have increased through the winter period with work currently underway on 27 structures. Arising from a Health & Safety incentive scheme run on the N17 / 18 project, DirectRoute recently made a donation to Pieta House West. The Safety Observation Reports (SOR’s) for the project are assessed on a monthly basis and the best suggestion each month is awarded a prize for their initiative. ince its formation in 1976, Cairn Delivery Service has grown steadily to become one of Ireland's leading overnight logistics operators, offering a next day overnight pallet and parcel service throughout the island at very competitive rates. They also offer an extensive range of transport solutions tailored to meet various customer requirements. Set up by brothers, Paddy and Colm Dooey, Cairn Delivery Service first began running a small nationwide distribution service covering the north and south, working mainly for clothing and pharmaceutical firms. He also outlined their ambitions for further growth as they look ahead to the future. “We've been very busy. here is a lot to be learned in business and it takes years to fully understand how it all works. In the last recession, it was no surprise that many of the companies that were forced to close down were ones that had only started in the previous few years and had little experience in dealing with the hardship that ensued. The construction industry was hit harder than any other sector in the Irish economy and a lot of ‘belt tightening’ was needed for many to get through. One such company that has seen numerous recessions in Ireland is Tony Kirwan Plant Hire & Civil Engineering, a family run business based in

Kilmacthomas, Co Waterford. Established by Tony Kirwan in 1960, the company has grown into a wellrespected, experienced and provider of an excellent service to a large customer base. From humble beginnings, Tony who still runs the business to this day, along with his nephew David who is Plant Manager, worked hard to develop the business into what it is today. “I started out with a bulldozer doing some land excavation work and the business grew from there. I would have been doing a lot of local work that time,” said Tony. There have been many changes to the

construction industry over the years and Tony has seen them all. “The changes have been huge alright, from the machinery to every aspect of a job, everything has changed, the majority of which has been for the better.” From the days of just having a bulldozer, the company can now call on a wide range of machinery to carry out their many projects. “We have an extensive fleet that comprises of excavators ranging from 3tonne to 65-tonne, dump trucks, JCBs, bulldozers, eight-wheel tipper truck and articulated tipper truck. We also have loading shovels, a mobile crusher and mobile screens. We have a range of

small plant and equipment available including rock breakers, 6–9 tonne dumpers, survey equipment etc.” Having such an extensive fleet of machinery means that there is plenty of maintenance work to be done, or more to the preventive maintenance. “All the plant is maintained regularly by our full time in house trained fitters. The equipment is certified annually by a trained assessor in accordance with the regulations. We would do a lot of preventive maintenance so that we avoid breakdowns as much as possible as these are the last thing you want while on a job.” As part of their total plant hire and contracting service they can supply and manage operators and equipment for projects including: Plant Hire, Bulk Earthworks, Site Clearance and Preparation Groundworks, Services Installation, Land Restoration and Remediation, Quarrying, Crushing and Screening Road, Roundabout Construction, Coastal Protection, Gabion Wall Construction, Heavy Haulage, Waste Disposal, Demolition, Asbestos Removal and Traffic Management. Through the company’s many years’ experience, they have been involved in many prestigious contracts working for some of the top building firms in the country as well as Government and council bodies. “Our aim is to deliver the highest quality of work to all our customers and I’d like to think that we have earned a reputation of delivering that in a timely and cost effective manner. “Quality is everything in this business and our customers know that they will get that every time that we are involved in one of their projects. “We would have a lot of repeat

Northern Ireland’s Minister for Agriculture Michelle O'Neill visited the revamped site in 2014 and was suitably impressed, saying: “The recent investment that Eugene has made to his business has had a very positive impact in terms of much-needed job creation in this rural area. Businesses such as this are at the logistical heart of our agri-food sector and the recent investment by Ardboe Coldstore demonstrates the confidence for growth that is currently in this sector.” Eugene is delighted that his company, which has grown to employ in excess of 60 people, is able to offer its customers a total package and distribution solution in the heart of Northern Ireland. “We provide a complete package in

multi collections/deliveries; satellite tracking; split door fridges; box trailers/double floor trailers; side loading/roof loading trailers and block bookings on all ferry routes. They service the following countries weekly: Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg. In addition, they also cover Austria, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, Romania, the UK, the Czech Republic and Greece. They are not a groupage operator but they will load part loads providing they can put something together with them at the time. Ray and his management team are more interested in full loads or selling the full trailer for multi collections/deliveries. “Following the recent acquisition of two Scania trucks, we presently have nine trucks of our own in addition to 25 regular subcontractors. Our experienced drivers are focused on delivering a quality service to ensure that our customers' product arrives on time in the same condition that it is dispatched in.” “We were very busy in January, February was quiet and March was okay,” replied Ray when asked how the current economic climate was treating the company. “Exports seem busy enough but imports have been more difficult as we

must compete with the container option and cheaper transport from Eastern Europe. There is growth in this country, but some other countries are not doing as well as we are doing. The Italian, Dutch and the German economies, are not performing as well so there is a counter effect to that. “At all times, we are trying to grow our company and keep our trucks up-to-date. As Irish trucking companies go, we are up there with the rest as regards equipment and technology. In general, Irish hauliers have come a long way in the last 10 years, and would be on the same level as the best in Europe. “Our trucks are fitted with satellite tracking and online temperature tracking on the fridges. The use of Telematics helps us keep on top of running costs, as we try to stay competitive in a tough market.”
