Carrier Transicold Xarios™ 500 units Cream of the Crop for Rodda’s
Cornish clotted cream producer Rodda’s has updated its fleet with four new 7.5-tonne Isuzu ‘Forward’ N75.190 trucks mounted with insulated bodies and Carrier Transicold Xarios™ 500 refrigeration units. Carrier Transicold, which operates in the UK as Carrier Transicold UK, is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX). Rodda have updated their fleet with four new Key to securing the order from the family-run 7.5 tonne Isuzu ‘Forward’ N75.190 trucks business was the proven performance of an existing Carrier Transicold-equipped vehicle that joined the company’s fleet last year. The four new trucks and their Xarios 500 systems join Rodda’s 18-strong refrigerated fleet, including a mix of 15 7.5-tonne Isuzu, Iveco, Mitsubishi Fuso and Volkswagen vehicles, plus three 18-tonne MAN rigid trucks. The new vehicles will be used intensively six days a week, to help transport up to 220 million portions of clotted cream produced at Rodda’s creamery each year to hotels, restaurants and supermarket regional distribution centres throughout South West England. The four new arrivals are expected to remain in service for five years and cover 90,000 miles annually. Servicing and maintenance for Rodda’s refrigerated fleet is carried out by local network service partner Carrier Transicold Cornwall. “We purchased a truck mounted with a Carrier Transicold Supra™ 1050 unit and were so impressed with its performance that we’ve never looked back,” said Barry Wilkinson, transport logistics manager, Rodda’s. “Since then we’ve entrusted our refrigeration requirements to Carrier Transicold UK, and had no hesitation in giving the company 100 per cent of our latest order.” Capable of maintaining a set point of between -20 and +30 degrees Celsius in vehicles with box volumes from 8-40m3, the Carrier Transicold Xarios range is ideally suited to Rodda’s application. The units’ ultra slim evaporators increase the available load space, while the advanced electronic controller and brushless fans reduce the chance of vehicle downtime, helping to ensure high reliability and a long product lifetime. Founded in 1890 by Eliza Jane Rodda, Cornish clotted cream production has been at the heart of the Rodda family for more than 125 years. Dedicated to its Cornish heritage, Rodda’s sources all of its milk from within a 30-mile radius of its creamery in Redruth, Cornwall. febi Truck clutch forks
The demands on modern clutch systems are incredibly high and the system is exposed to frequent strain. The clutch release fork is a key part of the clutch system. As the pedal is depressed, the fork fingers act directly on the release bearing, pulling it back to disengage the clutch. Note: It is important to note that with the clutch fully applied, there should be 1/8 of an inch of free play between the fork and the release bearing. This free play should be taken up by the first one to two inches of clutch pedal travel. febi Truck supply over 15 different clutch forks, covering all the major makes, including the current Euro 6 generation for some DAF models. Giti brand comes to Europe
Giti Tire has launched its flagship Giti brand into its European Truck and Bus (TBR) operations at Reifen Essen 2016. The strategic initiative, which will replace GT Radial through a mixture of new tyres and relabelling of existing successful products, will begin immediately and be fully implemented by the end of 2017. Giti Tire is currently the fifth largest producer of TBR tyres globally and operates in over 130 markets with OE contracts in every continent, the decision is designed to expand the use and knowledge of the Giti brand and portfolio to create a singular global platform and streamline product development. The company showed a comprehensive mix of tyres from its Combi Road, Long Haul, Regional Haul, Mixed Service, Urban and Winter ranges and unveiled the Giti GDR655 regional drive axle and Giti GAM851 mixed-service steer and trailer tyres. Daria Sala della Cuna, TBR Sales & Marketing Director - Europe at Giti Tire, said: "This is a hugely exciting development, and one that will ultimately benefit end-users and distributors in the European market on a substantial scale. "The development of TBR tyres is a lengthy process, so to be able to streamline these efforts to a reduced number of brands, while still ensuring the product meets every operational and legislative requirement for Europe and other markets, means state-of-the-art technologies can be brought to market much faster. "Also Giti tyres are now fitted by OEM manufacturers around the world in the truck, trailer and passenger vehicle sectors, and as the export of these vehicles continues to grow like-for-like replacements must be available globally." Further information on the Giti TBR rollout will be disclosed over the coming weeks and months including new product lines, confirmation of GT Radial rebranded tyres, new sizes and improved certifications. During this period product development will continue apace. No timescales are set for the introduction of Giti branded products into specific European countries, they will be brought in to meet market requirements based on manufacturing availability. "We are convinced that this decision will give our current end-users continuously maximised products for lowest cost per kilometre in their operations," concluded Daria. "And for our distributors a new exciting tool to work within the European market place. "This is a decision that has been many years in the making and will ultimately prove a successful model to improve the quality of our tyres, R&D capabilities, reputation, value-added services and all-round requirements of our customers - the Giti Giti Tire has launched its flagship Giti brand brand will become synonymous with quality."

Goodyear highlights truck tyre influence on CO2 emissions
The right truck tyre choice can immediately reduce CO2 emissions Brussels, May 31, 2016 – Goodyear has added its voice to the debate on the integrated efforts to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the transport industry. The leading tyre manufacturer points out the effect that recent truck tyre developments have had on significantly reducing CO2 emissions made by commercial vehicles. It also highlights the effectiveness of the EU tyre label in achieving CO2 reduction across the transport industry. The wider use of rolling resistance optimized truck tyres such as FUELMAX, Goodyear´s most fuel efficient truck tyre range, can significantly reduce emissions of CO2 as well as cut fuel consumption. Calculations show that by changing from C-grade tyres in the EU fuel efficiency tyre label category to B-grade FUELMAX tyres on a standard European 40 tonne truck and trailer traveling 78,000 kms per year, a reduction in CO2 emissions of approximately 3.2 tonnes1 per year can be achieved. Bearing in mind that there are millions of trucks and trailers operating in Europe, the opportunity for reducing emissions by using more fuel efficient truck tyres is enormous. “Carbon dioxide emissions are directly related to fuel consumption,” said Michel Rzonzef Vice President Commercial Business Goodyear Europe Middle, East and Africa. “One of the main areas of focus in our development work is the reduction of rolling resistance. This mean lower fuel costs for our customers and less emissions for the environment. Further to this, thanks to the introduction of the EU tyre label in 2012, the efficiency of tyres in this respect is in plain view. So choosing the truck tyres with the best fuel efficiency grade is a simple yet important task. It also has the added benefit that it reduces the total cost of ownership for fleet operators. By encouraging truck operators simply to change their tyres from a C to a B-grade in fuel efficiency, carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced by approximately 3.2 tonnes per vehicle per year. In addition, annual savings of more than €1,3002per vehicle can be achieved.” A recently presented study by ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association) analyzed work carried out by TML (Transport & Mobility Leuven) and reported that an integrated approach including all actors of the road transport sector has the potential to double the annual CO2 reduction rate from trucks, to up to 3.5% compared focusing only on new vehicles3. One key element in achieving this, which is easy to implement, is to fit fuel efficient truck tyres on existing trucks in Europe.
Fifth consecutive success for Isuzu’s award winning Grafter
The Isuzu Grafter 3.5t rigid truck has won the 2016 ‘Best Builder's Truck’ award again from leading UK business van magazine ‘Trade Van Driver’. Michelin expands accidental damage guarantee for regional tyres
Michelin is extending its accidental damage guarantee for regional tyres across the UK and Republic of Ireland (ROI), significantly increasing the range of fitments covered to offer customers even more protection against the financial costs of accidental damage. The company’s X Multi Guarantee now covers 37 tyre sizes, including Michelin’s most popular products on the replacement and original equipment markets. This marks an increase of 34 fitments from the previous scheme – and includes all X Multi and X MultiWay regional tyres, in all available sizes. The guarantee promises to refund operators for any accidental damage suffered before a tyre is 50 per cent worn, provided it has been registered on Michelin MyAccount* – the company’s dedicated customer web portal – within one month of purchase. Chris Smith, Head of Truck Marketing at Michelin, says: “Michelin invests more than €700m in research and development every year so we’re confident that our tyres are extremely hard wearing. Fleets that specify budget tyres tend to do so because they believe accidental tyre damage occurs regardless of whether a vehicle is shod with premium tyres or a cheaper alternative – but this is a false economy. “Michelin tyres are designed to be particularly durable, and offer superior on-road performance, fuel efficiency and safety over a long service life. Extending our accidental damage guarantee demonstrates the confidence we have in our tyres.” The exact refund offered under the X Multi Guarantee is calculated against the remaining tread depth of the tyre, and based on a fixed price of £385 for 22.5” tyres, £300 for 19.5” fitments and £200 for 17.5” tyres. The Michelin MyAccount web portal is quick and easy to use, with operators able to activate a guarantee in just four clicks, once a tyre has been registered. ‘Accidental damage’ is defined as an impact occurring to a registered tyre which makes it unusable. The policies exclude damage suffered through road accidents, acts of vandalism, fire and natural disasters. Last month Michelin also doubled the number of tyres covered by its X Works Guarantee, for tyres used in on/off-road applications. The guarantee now includes 14 sizes, including the newly-launched X Works HD D (drive) and HD Z (all-position) tyre patterns, plus three sizes of Remix tyres: X Works XZY and XDY in 315/80 R 22.5, and X Works XZY3 in 385/65 R 22.5. *Customers in the ROI must register tyres with either their tyre dealer or their local Michelin Account Manager For further information on the Michelin commercial vehicle tyre range visit http://trucks.michelin.co.uk/

Mar-Train moves giant crushers on five-axle extending step frame
Northern Ireland-based abnormal load specialist, MarTrain Heavy Haulage, has taken delivery of a new five-axle extending step frame trailer, following the excellent performance of an almost identically specified unit delivered three years ago. The 85-tonne gross weight trailer will be used to transport heavy-duty quarry equipment, including Terex crushers and screeners, around the UK and Europe. Mar-Train Managing Director, Tim Martin, says: “We keep returning to Andover Trailers because they are always able to supply a trailer built specifically Mar-Train Heavy Haulage has taken delivery of to our needs. We work within a new five-axle extending step frame trailer an extremely specialist environment and due to the sheer size of the equipment we move, its essential we have a trailer that can really stand up to the rigours of the job. “We have had multiple assets from Andover Trailers since our first order back in 1993. The delivery of this latest unit continues the long-standing business relationship between our two companies.” The 14.95m step frame is equipped with a low profile neck and has the ability to extend by 2.5m to accommodate longer machines – providing maximum flexibility for Mar-Train. Extending via two outer box beams the trailer offers higher strength precisely where it is required, supporting heavy machinery directly under the tracks. The new trailer’s specification includes three fixed and two self-tracking steer axles, each manufactured by BPW and rated to 12 tonnes. BPW air suspension with raise/lower control is also fitted and can be used to lower the trailer for loading and unloading. Additional features include Andover Trailers’ heavy-duty hydraulic power toe ramps which provide a low loading angle and four heavy-duty hydraulic steady legs to guarantee a stable loading platform. The trailer also benefits from galvanised side extensions, plus a convenient storage compartment for the side-extension timbers in the centre of the deck. Andover Trailers has equipped the extending step frame with all round LED lighting and installed steel underlays to the beavertail and ramps to extend the life of the flooring timber. Mar-Train Heavy Haulage was established more than three decades ago. The company specialises in providing transport solutions for abnormal and awkward loads (including wind turbines) across Ireland, the UK and mainland Europe. Its fleet includes tractor units plated at up to 250-tonnes, plus a full range of trailers including step frames, low loaders and specialist Goldhofer heavy-haulage modules, supplied by Andover Trailers.
P&O Ferrymasters in new Italy-Romania intermodal partnership
Leading logistics solutions specialists P&O Ferrymasters and the Transmec Group are partnering to expand their intermodal operations with the launch of a regular rail service linking Italy and Romania. Using private rail operators under a dedicated company train concept, the service starts on June 1 with two departures per week each way between Piacenza and Oradea, leaving every Wednesday and Saturday. An additional weekly departure is planned within a few months. The collaboration provides a major new freight transport option for companies serving markets in southern and eastern Europe. Key features also include a fixed terminal-to-terminal transit time of 40 hours, up to 80 weekly slots, an own-asset fleet of 300 Huckepack trailers and more than 2,500 45-foot containers, forward shipments/collections and an extensive office network with dedicated staff. Responding to increasing customer demand, the launch follows the success of the intermodal operation between Zeebrugge (Belgium) and Romania launched by the companies in 2014. Coinciding with the new service, P&O Ferrymasters and Transmec have invested 50/50 in the Oradea facility to set up their own private terminal - replacing the current Romanian railhead in Curtici - and are now upgrading the infrastructure. Future operations and marketing will be geared towards providing terminal services to third party rail operators as well as hosting the partnership’s own trains from Zeebrugge and Piacenza.

Schmitz Cargobull draws positive conclusion from bauma 2016
Schmitz Cargobull once again showcased the latest innovations for construction trailers at bauma 2016, the world's leading trade fair for the construction industry. At the company's 600 m2 stand, the trailers on show and the team of experts were constantly surrounded by hordes of visitors. The resounding opinion: With these reliable vehicles and the solutions for operating vehicles via a smartphone, the company has set new standards for added comfort and safety. The overall outcome from the trade fair reflected this response. “We were able to sign significantly more contracts than at the previous bauma. We were very happy with the result,” explains Boris Billich, Sales Director at Schmitz Cargobull. Billich went on to say: “With around 580,000 visitors from more than 200 countries, this trade fair is the benchmark for innovations. With our efficient new construction trailers, we are once again setting standards for the sector, and our strong performance in terms of incoming orders sets a positive signal for the economy.” The trailers on show - an S.KI tipper trailer with a rounded steel body and an S.KI tipper trailer with an aluminium box body were equipped with new thermal insulation for asphalt transport. The advantage? More than 200 kg extra payload! Both of the show models were also fitted with Schmitz Cargobull's S.KI Control app, which includes new, innovative safety functions for drivers, trailers and other road users. Furthermore, an M.KI tractor tipper body, available as a kit for all conventional truck manufacturers, also attracted a great deal of attention from visitors.
Allison Transmission answers Romaquip’s call to equip 4-cylinder DAF LFs
UK kerbside collection market leader Romaquip has ordered 160 new DAF LF180 trucks, 40 of which were recently delivered. Romaquip requested that the Allison 2500 fully automatic transmission be made available with the 4-cylinder PACCAR PX-5 engine in the new 12-tonne vehicles. “The preferred transmission for the refuse and municipal sector is an Allison, due to its quality, reliability and ability to protect the driveline,” said John McKeown, technical director at Romaquip. “Along with Allison’s UK team, we were able to work with the DAF engineering team based in Leyland to secure the release of the ideal specification for our application.” According to McKeown, an automated manual transmission (AMT) was not suitable for the creeping speeds and multiple stop-start conditions customer vehicles face, but there was no Allison option available with a 4-cylinder Euro 6 engine. Romaquip have ordered 160 “We also considered the 6-cylinder DAF LF220 with new DAFLF 180 trucks an Allison 3000 Series™ transmission, but that configuration would have added half a tonne, putting too much additional weight on the front axle,” said McKeown. “The Allison 2500 model solution is a godsend for our sector.” Romaquip entered the kerbside collection market in 2011 with its Kerb-Sort vehicle, the first with a fully automated unloading system. Able to separate 10 kinds of fully segregated, unpolluted waste in a single pass, Romaquip guarantees off-loading in just seven minutes. A stainless steel, compartmentalised body extends the normal vehicle life of five to seven years out to 10 to 14 years, reducing lifetime ownership costs by protecting against corrosion and high maintenance costs. Likewise, the Allison transmission protects the driveline and reduces unnecessary maintenance expenses, requiring only scheduled fluid and filter changes. Since the vehicle can compact up to four tonnes of payload into a 35-metre-cubed collection space, McKeown said vehicle weight was also critical in the specification process. The first 40 trucks are now in operation for local authority fleets in Wrexham, the Lake District, Devon and Flintshire.

Topaz Energy Invests in Safer, More Efficient Volvo Trucks
Topaz Energy Group Ltd has recently taken delivery of a number of new Volvo Trucks from Dennison Commercials Ltd
Topaz Energy Group Ltd, Ireland’s largest convenience and fuel retailer, has recently taken delivery of a number of new Volvo trucks from Dennison Commercials Ltd. With three rigid Volvo FE tankers and one FM tractor unit delivered to date, this is the beginning of an extensive replacement scheme to improve the efficiency and reliability of the fleet, with a number of safety related features specified. The new trucks are part of a wider internal restructure within Topaz, which has endeavoured to implement a more streamlined Transport department. By driving efficiencies within the business operation, the Company has been able to reduce the overall fleet size. The artic specification is a Volvo FM-460 6x2 Globetrotter and the tankers are Euro-6 Volvo FE 320hp 6x2 rear steer vehicles, with Volvo I-Shift automated 12-speed gearboxes, perfect for city distribution.. The Topaz specification has a number of safety-related features, both for drivers and other road users. As well as forward collision warning with emergency braking, lane keeping support and an electronic stability package, the vehicles have been specified with a number of enhanced visibility options. Features such as red seatbelts, four-way camera systems and lower near side kerb windows for pedestrian and cyclist safety have also been included.. Dennison Commercials have provided extensive ‘Train the Trainer’ driver coaching, which covered vehicle familiarisation, including refresher training on existing Volvos and on the new vehicles, and driving techniques to get the best performance from the trucks, by promoting an optimum driving style. According to Andrew McKay, Operations Manager, “At Topaz Local Fuel we are always looking for ways to improve the safety and security of our drivers, vehicles, the environment we work in and the general public we work with. By choosing Volvo with its multi-point camera system and the auto braking system I'm confident that we will reduce our operational risk on the road. I have already received positive feedback from our drivers”. “Road to Logistics” Launched at Microlise Transport Conference to Help Plug Driver Shortfall
A new not-for-profit organisation called Road to Logistics has been formed with the aim of addressing the professional driver shortfall, whilst supporting those in society who may need a helping hand. The organisation, launched today at the Microlise Transport Conference, is a close collaboration between Microlise Executive Director Bob Harbey and Road Haulage Association (RHA) Chief Executive Richard Burnett. Additional support will be provided by Care after Combat, the charity chaired by Jim Davidson OBE. Road to Logistics will seek to give veterans and reformed offenders the opportunity of a secure long term career in transport and logistics. Individuals will go through a programme of activity that ends with them securing qualifications such as HGV licences, to enable them to begin a career in the transport and logistics industry. The initial cohort of five drivers has already begun training in the programme. “We have an objective to have 30 to 50 drivers through the programme by Christmas. We want to walk before we run and ensure that the programme is nationally scalable,” said Bob Harbey, who is also Road to Logistics Chief Executive, speaking at the Microlise Transport Conference. ““The aim is to gather evidence during the pilot phase to show the exchequer that there is a net gain to the economy by running this programme. We then hope to secure further funding to increase the numbers of new professional drivers being created,” added Harbey. Road to Logistics is working closely with services charity Care after Combat and the prison service to identify potential recruits for the programme. Following interviews and employability assessment, Road to Logistics will fund and support new recruits through professional licence training before placing them in an appropriate job. “Our aim to provide professional assistance where possible for the wellbeing of veterans and their families,” said Care after Combat Executive Chairman, Jim Davidson OBE. “By providing secure long-term skilled employment in the transport industry we are achieving many IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS
of our goals while at the same time providing a new source of talent for the industry. We think it will be a win win situation.” Major hauliers have already begun to allocate vacancies and will accept the first new drivers to complete the programme. To ensure the training provided by Road to Logistics is to a high standard DAF Trucks dealership Ford & Slater is providing vehicles for use. Richard Burnett, Chief Executive of the RHA and Chairman of the newly formed, not-for-profit charity said he is hopeful that Road to Logistics will be a force for good on a large scale. “Right now, the road transport and logistics industry is facing a massive driver shortage – currently standing at 45,000. If we can help address the issue and at the same time support those in society who may
need a helping hand on to the employment ladder, then it is an opportunity that must be taken.” The launch at the Microlise Transport Conference featured Jim Davidson OBE, Governor Poole of HMP Sudbury Prison and Paul Allera, Head of Fleet at Fowler Welch. They took part in a special presentation at the event alongside Chief Executive Harbey. Road to Logistics will operate within the Microlise Group for financial stability and an initial investment of £100k has been made by the company to fund the pilot phase. For more information about applying for a place, or about recruiting Road to Logistics graduates in to your organisation go to www.roadtologistics.org.

New Ford Transit and Transit Custom Offer Lower Costs and More Performance with Advanced New Ford EcoBlue Engine
Ford’s new Transit and Transit Custom commercial vehicles powered by the all-new, state-of-the-art 2.0-litre Ford EcoBlue diesel engine will offer improved cost of ownership and performance for customers from mid-2016. New from the ground up, the next-generation Ford EcoBlue engine enhances fuel efficiency by up to 13 per cent compared with the outgoing 2.2-litre TDCi engine, with CO2 emissions from 157 g/km,* and delivers significant improvements in low-rpm torque for enhanced driveability. The new engine – available to order now – also will deliver up to 2-year/60,000 km (37,000 mile) variable service intervals for Transit and Transit Custom operators. The all-new downsized 2.0-litre Ford EcoBlue diesel engine has been engineered to meet Ford’s rigorous commercial vehicle durability standards, powering Transit vehicles through the equivalent of 5.5 million km (3.4 million miles) of punishing durability testing, including 400,000 km (250,000 miles) of testing at the hands of real-world Transit customers. “The challenge was to take our best-selling Transit and make it cheaper to operate, improve performance, cleaner in terms of emissions, quieter in the cabin, safer and even more durable,” said Pete Reyes, Ford of Europe’s head of commercial vehicles. “That’s exactly what we did with the new Transit and Transit Custom with the all-new Ford EcoBlue engine.”
Clean diesel technologies enable ultra-low emissions in line with stringent Euro Stage VI standards that will be introduced in September 2016, requiring a 55 per cent reduction in NOx emissions compared to Euro Stage V standards. In addition to the all-new engine line-up, Transit and Transit Custom vehicles also are available to order now with advanced driver assistance technologies including Side Wind Stabilisation and Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection. From late 2016, customers also will be able to specify a six speed automatic transmission in place of a manual gearbox, and a new rear air suspension option on Transit Custom Kombi models.
The two-tonne Transit and one-tonne Transit Custom vehicles are core models within Ford’s renewed Transit range, which also includes the smaller all-new Transit Connect and Transit Courier vans. The success of this expanded line-up helped Ford become Europe’s No.1 selling commercial vehicle brand in 2015 – for the first time in 19 years – with total sales of 280,000, a year-over-year increase of 23 per cent. Growth has continued in the first four months of 2016, with combined Transit and Transit Custom sales in Europe of 66,700 vehicles, a rise of 18 per cent over the previous year. Cleaner, more efficient and refined Ford EcoBlue diesel The all-new 2.0-litre Ford EcoBlue diesel uses a completely new architecture engineered to provide the next-generation of clean, efficient and refined engines for future Ford cars and commercial vehicles. The engine has been developed with the latest turbocharging, fuel injection, combustion system, structural design and lowfriction technologies to deliver significant improvements in fuel efficiency, performance and operating refinement, while delivering the outstanding durability and low cost-of-ownership demanded for a Transit power unit.
For the Transit and Transit Custom models, the 2.0-litre Ford EcoBlue engine is offered in 105 PS, 130 PS and 170 PS power ratings, each of which offers increased power and torque compared to the outgoing 2.2-litre engine. Improved low-end pulling power – with 20 per cent more torque at 1,250 rpm – delivers more flexible and responsive performance in everyday driving. Lower running costs are supported by significantly improved fuel efficiency. Transit models equipped with optional Auto-StartStop achieve CO2 emissions from 174 g/km and average fuel consumption from 6.6 l/100 km (42.8 mpg) – a 10 per cent reduction over the equivalent outgoing model. Transit Custom vehicles fitted with optional Auto-Start-Stop deliver CO2 emissions from 157 g/km with average fuel consumption from 6.1 l/100 km (46.3 mpg) – 13 per cent down from the equivalent outgoing model. Ford anticipates a fuel cost saving of up to €1,600 (£1,250) over 130,000 km (80,000 miles) for the operator of a new 105 PS Transit Custom van compared with the previous 100 PS model.*** Scheduled maintenance costs are also reduced, with the extended variable service intervals of up to two years/60,000 km (37,000 miles) offering up to an additional 10,000 km (6,000 miles) between services on both Transit and Transit Custom models. To help achieve the stringent Euro Stage VI emissions standards, the 2.0-litre Ford EcoBlue diesel features an optimised combustion system with selective catalytic reduction exhaust gas after-treatment using AdBlue® (aqueous urea solution). The new engine also improves driver comfort during long working days through major reductions in engine noise, with passenger-car levels of refinement. The class-leading driving dynamics of the Transit and Transit Custom have been enhanced through revised steering efforts for better feedback, and a new rear damper design for improved comfort and control. Advanced driver assistance and vehicle technologies In parallel with the all-new powertrain, new Transit and Transit Custom models also benefit from advanced new driver

assistance and vehicle technologies to enhance confidence and comfort behind the wheel.
Using camera and radar technology shared with Ford’s latest passenger cars like the Mondeo and S-MAX, both Transit and Transit Custom customers can specify: · Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection – reduces the severity of some frontal collisions involving vehicles and pedestrians, or help drivers avoid some impacts altogether · Adaptive Cruise Control – uses forward-facing radar to enable drivers to maintain a set distance from the vehicle ahead
· Traffic Sign Recognition – provides drivers with the latest detected speed limit, cancellation signs and overtaking restrictions via the instrument cluster display
An upgraded Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system, fitted to both new models as standard equipment, provides an enhanced suite of functions to improve vehicle stability in extreme driving situations including three Ford-patented features: · Side Wind Stabilisation – a new system that applies the brakes on one side of the vehicle to reduce the effect of a sudden side wind gust on the vehicle’s path · Curve Control – a unique Ford-developed program designed to slow the vehicle in a safe and stable manner when it enters a bend like a motorway exit ramp too quickly · Roll Stability Control – designed to help prevent your vehicle rolling over by controlling both engine torque and individual wheel braking
Inside the cabin, Transit customers can now specify Ford’s SYNC 2 voice-activated connectivity system with a new highresolution 6-inch colour touch screen, featuring advanced voice control of audio, navigation and mobile phones. On Transit Custom vehicles, a new 4 inch colour display is standard on vehicles equipped with the SYNC connectivity system, in place of the previous 3.5-inch screen. From the outside, new Transit and Transit Custom models fitted with the all-new Ford 2.0-litre EcoBlue engine are identified by a new chrome finish strip in the lower front grille.
For improved comfort and convenience in urban driving, customers of Transit front-wheel drive derivatives and Transit Custom models will be able to specify a six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission from late 2016. The transmission offers smooth, responsive and efficient performance in partnership with the Ford EcoBlue diesel, including Auto-Start-Stop where fitted, and also provides the option of manual shifting using buttons mounted on the gear lever.
The unique-to-segment rear air suspension system is developed specially for the Transit Custom and meets Ford’s full commercial vehicle durability standards. The air suspension system delivers a supple, controlled and level ride across a wide range of load conditions, providing improved passenger comfort and vehicle dynamics on Kombi M1 models. The updated Transit and Transit Custom models offer commercial vehicle operators the same comprehensive line-up of vehicle variants including multiple roof height and wheelbase options, a wide choice of gross vehicle weights, and bodystyles with van, kombi and double-cab-in-van variants. Transit customers can further select from Front-Wheel Drive, Rear-Wheel Drive and intelligent All-Wheel Drive derivatives, along with Chassis Cab and Minibus bodystyles.

Driver Fatigue and the Consequences of Tachograph Manipulation
I
nternational research shows that at least 20% of collisions are down to fatigue related factors. A tired driver behind the wheel of a bus or a truck is inattentive and this can have serious consequences for all road users. Bus and truck drivers don’t have the typical “9 to 5” working day and many are involved in shift or irregular work patterns, can have long days, tight and unreasonable schedules and are required to sleep and take rest when most people are awake. Fighting sleep at the wheel is as dangerous as driving over the legal alcohol limit. Drivers’ hours and tachograph rules have been in place Europe wide since the 1980’s. These rules impose legal obligations concerning driving time, breaks and rest periods on drivers of trucks and buses. Drivers and operators who do not comply with these rules are not only breaking the law but exposing themselves and other road users to a significant road safety hazard. Drivers’ hours rules are primarily aimed at reducing the risk of driver fatigue for heavy commercial
26
vehicle drivers as well as ensuring fair competition and working conditions. A tachograph is a calibrated piece of equipment used to record a drivers activities such as rest and driving time and is legally required to be fitted to most heavy commercial vehicles. Tachograph manipulation is a deliberate and deceptive action which interferes with the recording process of the tachograph to facilitate the production of falsified records. A manipulation device, such as a magnet, interferes with the correct operation and functioning of the tachograph system. Some drivers and rogue operators believe that they can fool the system and avoid fines for excessive driving times and inadequate rest by using a
magnet or device to put the tachograph to sleep, thus disguising the actual time spent behind the wheel. This is considered to be tachograph fraud. Unfortunately, many drivers are unaware of the danger to road safety caused by using such a device. Not only can it disable the tachograph, but it can also disable the speed limiter, the speedometer and the gearbox management system. This has the potential to cause jack knifing and gear box damage with the inadvertent selection of low range gear at a high speed. It can also disable the suspension management system allowing the overloading of drive axles on 3 axle trucks. The use, or intention to interfere with a tachograph distorts fair competition, giving unscrupulous operators and drivers an unfair commercial advantage; and creates unacceptable negative social impacts for drivers by allowing, or forcing, them to drive for much longer periods than is legally permissible. Operators and drivers who chose to manipulate the tachograph are not only operating at an unfair commercial advantage in comparison to compliant operators, they are undermining road safety for all road users and putting everyone IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS
RSA_Layout 1 09/06/2016 16:54 Page 2
that comes close to that vehicle at risk of injury and possibly death. The enforcement unit of the Road Safety Authority is responsible for checking compliance with EU drivers’ hours and tachograph rules, the road transport working time directive, requirement to hold a road transport operator licence and drivers CPC. They are also responsible for the enforcement of commercial vehicle roadworthiness (vehicle repair and maintenance) regulations. Compliance checks are conducted both at the roadside (in conjunction with the Garda SĂochĂĄna) and at operators premises. Where breaches are detected a stepped approach to enforcement is taken, depending on the severity of the findings, ranging from educational and advisory to a direction notice being issued and ultimately, initiation of a prosecution. In 2015, Transport Officers from the Road Safety Authority initiated 212 prosecutions. While overall there has been an improvement in driver compliance, worryingly, the Road Safety Authority is finding that deliberate fraud and manipulation to hide excessive driving is becoming increasingly common. Road Safety Authority Transport Officers are trained in detecting such devices and checkpoints are held regularly to target offenders. Heavy commercial vehicle manufacturers are also aware of the practice and it is now possible to detect if a device was used from the vehicle diagnostics with the introduction of new fault codes. This check is now common practice for warranty claims on gearboxes. Transport Officers also use diagnostic equipment to check the fault codes, making detection a simpler process. The approach of the Road Safety Authority is to be thorough, fair and reasonable and enforcement efforts are targeted at those who pose the highest risk to the safety of our roads. Where non-compliance is found the RSA will work with and give operators the opportunity to address the issues in all but the most serious of cases such as dangerous drivers hours, fraud and manipulation. Aside from the risk of causing a catastrophic collision, there are also very stiff penalties to face if one is caught using a manipulation device. Where a deliberate attempt to manipulate a tachograph is detected these offences will be brought before the courts regardless of the circumstances and the Road Safety Authority will be asking the court to impose the maximum penalty. maturity and integrity when undertaking every job they do. They take great satisfaction in doing a professional job and maintaining their vehicles to a very high standard. The power of positive word-of-mouth ensures a steady stream of enquiries about their services. “Business is very good at the moment, we had a reasonably successful 2015, with a turnover of roughly £2.5m, and we're hoping this year will be equally as good,” David remarked. “We've been fortunate in that we've been involved with various different customers and some of our customers have been with us for 30 odd years. “The same can be said as regards our drivers. One guy has been with us for 13 years. We have a policy of changing our lorries every four years and some of our drivers are on their second and third lorries.” He continued: “There are challenges out there, competition being one but there's no shortcuts in this business. Shortcuts don't work and everything has to be above board. “We pride ourselves on the service we offer our customers and, one of the big things behind our continued growth is the fact that everybody is productive. My wife
Mary does the paperwork, I do the paperwork and if I'm needed I can go out and drive. e Irish seafood industry makes a significant contribution to the national economy in terms of output, employment and exports, while generating approximately 11,000 jobs in rural coastal regions.
reland’s natural resource based seafood industry provides an important source of economic activity in our remote coastal regions. It provides jobs on fishing vessels, on fish farms, in processing operations, in distribution and marketing seafood at home and to export markets and in a large number of smaller ancillary companies that provide services to the mainstream industry operators. The industry contributes about €700 million annually to national income of which Shellfish generates €172 million of that total. Irish seafood operates in two very differently performing markets: buoyant export markets and a difficult home market. The seafood processing sector is concentrated in the coastal regions of Donegal, Galway, Cork, Kerry and the South East. There are approximately 200 firms, mainly SMEs, are engaged in handling, distribution and processing of

Some of the best fishing occurs along the Donegal coast
For this month’s edition of Irish Trucker, we profile the company and speak to transport manager Eddie Ward about the logistics issues that face them on a daily basis. Established in 2001 by Eugene Hannigan, the company has grown to become one of the largest exporters of live Irish shellfish. Operating a fleet of 13 trucks (five artics, five fridges and three rigids), Live Irish Shellfish export their products to the mainly Brittany and Spain as well as places as far away as China. “With regards to the transport of the fish, it is a very specialised skill and it takes a special type of driver to work in this environment,” said Eddie. “We supply in between 20 and 25 wholesalers all across the regions mentioned. The artics and the fridges all head for the continent, while rigids usually go to the airport where we fly the fish to the likes of China.” Live Irish Shellfish operate their own two purpose built vessels which are continuously fishing along the coast of Ireland for the many different types of shellfish, although one dominates their market. “We have access to some of the purest waters and freshest shellfish in the world. We have our own boats that fish out of our local harbour and land daily so we can process during the night to ensure the freshest product possible. “Our core product is the Brown Crab which we supply to various customers the majority of which are based in Brittany. We pride ourselves on being able to supply the freshest and tastiest Brown Crab on the market.” The live crab is transferred from the IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

boats to specially built Vivier trucks. These trucks contain water tanks that keep the crab alive, and in excellent condition until it reaches customers. “The crabs are transferred from the boat to the lorry by the crew where they are placed in aerated tanks. The lorries can hold up to 10-tons of crabs and the average transport time to mainland Europe is 36 hours.” Our location is key to the success of the business as the North West of Ireland in Donegal on the shores of rugged North Atlantic Coastline produce some of the best shellfish in the world. “Every week we export a wide variety of live shellfish to our network of clients all over Europe in our fleet of dedicated Vivier trucks. The trucks are converted by ourselves and they are all either Scania or Volvo.” Eddie feels that their reputation and working relationship with all concerned has helped the company grow over the years. “Because of our reputation for reliability and service, we have a great supply network of all types of fishermen and boats right along the North Coast of Ireland. “With excellent relationships with our local fishermen and suppliers we can ensure demand is met with supply and still ensure sustainable fishing is at the core of our business. Seafood innovation and new product development, together with maintenance of an international reputation for wholesome, fresh and natural seafood, produced in the most sustainable and environmentally friendly manner, are essential to the advancement and further development of the Irish seafood sector. State support for the sector is focused on initiatives that endeavour to deliver these fundamental requirements while also seeking to increase Ireland’s market share of the international seafood industry. “This is a difficult industry to operate in, but there is support there and it is badly needed. Time constraints are a major issue, but fortunately, we have a good team here with many lads working with the company for a long time now.” IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

drivers from all over Ireland pass their tests and the trend looks set to continue for some time, with Yvonne reporting busy times for her company at present. “I’ve been in the transport industry since 1997 and would have started up my own School of Motoring in 2003,” explained Yvonne, whose company is based on the second floor of Cusack House, Castle Street in Mullingar, Co Westmeath. “Over the years, I up skilled into truck and bus training and was building up to setting up ADTA, which started in 2008. We have two staff members employed here full-time and then we’d have 17 lecturers working here part-time. “My position is Managing Director, but I’m also a lecturer here as well.” Yvonne’s School of Motoring was first set-up in March of 2003, before starting ADTA five years later to specifically cater for professional drivers. Later in 2008, both companies were joined together as one, essentially making ADTA a one-stop shop for all the needs of the transport industry. “We provide CPC Transport Management in both Bus and Haulage and we also provide ADR Driver Training Certificate (Hazchem) Training,” Yvonne outlined.
“We have six different training centres between Cavan and Carlow where we provide training. We also do onsite audits for tachograph digital and analogue and vehicle maintenance procedures and planning.” She continued: “A lot of the driving lessons that we do would see us going into secondary schools and working with transition year students. We also do a lot of maintenance, maintenance procedures and Tachograph training for the management and drivers of haulage & bus companies around the area.” Yvonne’s early days in the transport sector saw her starting out at Glenview School of Motoring and Hynes Driving School. At the former, Yvonne trained under James Leogue, whom she credits for guiding her and giving her great advice before starting up her own school of motoring with a single car. “I started off at Glenview School of Motoring, which services the Midlands area and I was trained by a man named James Leogue,” said ADTA’s MD. “After I qualified to get my bus licence, I was employed by Michael Hynes “Hynes Driving School Tullamore” for 6 years and then took the decision to go out on my own and haven’t looked back since. great advice before and after I went out on my own.” Since then, Yvonne has gone on to start two separate businesses of h er own and merge them together – a brave move when you consider the timing. However, she admits that her business wasn’t majorly affected by the economic downturn that shook the country in and around the time ADTA was first born. “If you look at it, we started in 2008, which was a very difficult time to start a company in this country, but we’ve come through it,” said Yvonne. “While we weren’t all that badly affected by it, it was still difficult to start a company given the economic climate at that time.” ADTA has basically grown by the year since that time, to the point where it now employs 20 staff between fulltime and part-time so as to keep up with the business demand. 2 Yvonne explained that busy periods can be quite hectic at ADTA, where the staff are renowned for their friendly, relaxed approach and their reliability. “We have two part-time
driving instructors here as well and in a busy week we could be doing anything between 30 to 40 lessons,” she revealed. “Most of our training is classroom based. We’re not a driving school per say, as we only have one car here, the rest is classroom based.” So why do learner drivers tend to choose ADTA first? customer care. “Our customer service is the main selling point of the business and we’ve two great women working here for us in our customer service department. We tend to get a great response from them,” said Yvonne. This past March saw ADTA become the first driver training provider to be re approved under the new criteria from the Department of Transport ATP
(Approved Providers for Transport Management). ADTA is also well-known for its promotion of road safety to young people in its local area. Last year saw Yvonne and members of the An Garda Siochana and the Fire Service visit a series of different schools around the region, with Yvonne explaining to local media that they “wanted to make the students aware of the dangers when they go driving and what the risks are”. She also added: “You are preparing them for a new skill and that knowledge won’t come overnight. That’s what I wanted to say to them, ‘you have to learn it the right way and you will need to learn it over time’.” Among the schools ADTA visited around the local region were; Columba College, Killucan, St Joseph’s Rochfortbridge and Loreto College, Mullingar. ADTA are Driver CPC approved and are ADI Approved Driving Instructor by RSA. They are also approved by The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and the Health and Safety Authority.

Wexford, which has been in business for over a quarter of a century and has established itself as premier fuel delivery operators not just in the south easy but anywhere in Ireland. The company was formed in April, 1992 by a team of six ex-drivers, who worked for another oil company and decided to come
together and set up their own home-grown operation. One of those entrepreneurial individuals, George O’Leary, became MD and the rest were appointed directors. Today, four of the founding members remain on as co-owners of the business, namely George, Ger Furlong, Eddie Morrissey and Eamonn Kehoe (all great

Wexford names!), with gainful employment generated for a team of 17. It would be fair to say that the directors know their jobs inside-out – all four of them have been involved in the fuel industry since the summer of 1980! “We stick to what we know best, and what we know best is haulage,” says George, whose brothers Willie and Robert O’Leary are also hauliers, each fronting their own business. “Our father drove a roller for Wexford County Council, so we probably got if from him,” says the MD of Campfreight. Campfreight Ltd. delivers fuel for industry, directly from terminals in Dublin, Whitegate (Cork) and Foynes (Limerick) to fuel depots, service stations, commercial premises and ship bunkering. “We collect, transport and deliver all types of fuel – petrol, diesel and kerosene as well as high and low sulphur,” George confirms. “We deliver into a total of 20 service stations, while diesel also goes to commercial centres and depots.” Campfreight collect for Jones Oil, Glen Fuels, Amber Oil and West Cork Oil in addition to having their own network of stations that they deal with directly themselves. At the heart of the operation is a fleet of 14 exceptional trucks, all Mercedes-Benz bar one Scania. Regarding the clear preference for Mercedes, George notes: “We like to keep the fleet uniform so that each driver can operate them all. We get a great service from the local dealer and the lorries are extremely reliable.” Running a fresh fleet is a prerequisite in an industry where safety and punctuality are paramount. “We keep them down to an average of four years maximum,” George continues. “We have two new 162-reg trucks coming in on July 1st this year. That sort of ongoing investment is necessary in order to provide optimal service levels. You don’t have to upgrade the tankers as often – you could get 14 years out of a tanker now.” A landmark deal was recently inked with Continental tyres. As the oil delivery sector demands premium tyres for safety and performance, Campfreight has made a long-term commitment to continue using Continental tyres on both drive and trailer axles for the next four years, as – during trials - the low rolling resistance resulted in improved fuel returns, while the reliability of these hard-wearing, longlasting tyres also eliminates instances of blow-outs, which are a real no-no in haulage. IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS
Campfreight will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2017
“We buy our tyres directly through a local Continental dealer,” says George. “We also have Continental steering tyres on now and if they work out we will stick with them as well. Needless to say, the tyres are absolutely crucial. When you spend €200,000 or more on a truck and trailer, you need something decent below you. The tyres will generally be on for around 200,000km and performance and fuel savings for that amount of time can really add up. I buy the tyres in blocks of 50 to keep the cost per unit down and Eddie [Morrissey] fits them all in-house. “For maintenance etc., we use a local mechanic – Noel Dempsey – who looks after all the trucks and trailers and keeps
them all in shipshape.” George is pleased to report that while much of the transport sector was ravaged by the recession, Campfreight Ltd. remained largely unaffected. “There was no slump at all. The fuel and food markets remained buoyant. No matter how bad things get, there will always be a demand for fuel.” Now in its 24th year, Campfreight Ltd. has come a long way since George and his work colleagues at the time decided to boldly put their plan for independence into action. With a proven track record for providing outstanding fuel delivery solutions, their future is in good hands. Any plans beyond consolidation?

“Needless to say, the tyres are absolutely crucial”
“Maybe to garner a bit more business,” George concludes. “A lot of oil companies in Ireland are Irish-owned now and that is good to see. The foreign multinationals didn’t think there was a company in Ireland that could deliver fuel, but there are now, and Irish people can do anything. “Safety is a big issue in our industry and we are fully compliant with all rules and regulations. EU directives are coming thick and fast and you have to meet the challenge and abide by all the tachograph rules etc., even though some of them are unnecessarily strict and don’t take cognisance of road and traffic conditions. All our drivers are fully trained and we operate strictly within the existing legal parameters. You have to do things right – that’s the only way to distribute oil. “The roads are a lot easier to drive on these days than they were when we started out as well and the trucks are a lot better, so it’s onwards and upwards.” IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

The rise in the economy is
helping the whole thing and we'd be confident about the future. “We're in the fortunate position of having a large number of loyal customers and we'd like to thank them for their custom.” When it comes to the transport industry, there is not much that proprietor Kieran doesn't know about. I use to have the garage and found that I would be called out to jobs a lot, so I decided too concentrate on the recovery side of things and thankfully, we have been kept fairly busy over the years,” said Michael. “We would do a lot of work for all the big insurance companies, as well as other state bodies, while we would have a lot of call outs to people that would be stranded on the side of the road. the last couple of years or so, which is encouraging. From '06 up to '09, it was booming. Things have been a lot quieter since, but we kept going through the recession and you can see an upturn in the last couple of years. This work can be seasonable, but in all honesty even though many might think that the winter is busier, I think the summer can be busier at times as people are driving a lot faster.” In this line of business, no corners can be cut and no chances can be taken. To this end, Duggan’s Garage is fully certified and does everything in compliance with existing legislation and recommendations. “Health & Safety are of paramount importance,” he confirms. “You have to be clearly visible when you're out on the road and you have to keep all the equipment fresh, clean and in prime working order. Image is everything so I look after the vehicle as best I can. It is checked on a daily basis and maintenance is key. A CPC course must be done to get the proper licence to operate.” As for the future, Michael concludes: “I'll try to keep the overheads down, keep the money coming in and offer as much help as possible to the people who need the service. Aside from buying the new recovery vehicle, I’ve no further plans to expand, I feel by keeping the business ‘small’ we can keep on top things better.

third lorry by May and gradually built the fleet up to ten, which is what I operate today. “My father still runs his own fleet of eight-wheel tippers, doing general muck shifting, stone and tarmacadam etc.” Damian’s fleet comprises seven Volvos and three Scanias, ranging in age from ’03-reg to ’12-reg. you can keep your overheads down to a minimum, which helps keep the business running as efficient as possible. There’s no quitting time around here – I’m here all the time between the office and the garage and my father and brother, Martin, are also on hand to help out if needed.” Toner Transport generates employment for a team of ten. “It’s mostly all traction work, drawing fridges between Ireland and the UK, as well as a small bit of tipper and trailer work,” Damian confirms. “The tipper work has been quiet enough but we’re hoping it will pick up again in the next few years.” At the heart of the business is an exceptionally well-maintained fleet of lorries. The units are fresh and regular preventative maintenance ensures that
they very rarely give any trouble. Damian has all the tools and equipment at his disposal to provide a comprehensive fleet care solution: “I have the main Volvo diagnostics system installed here as well as all the equipment needed to carryout servicing and general maintenance. With the latest dealer diagnostics in place, we can troubleshoot any problem quickly and accurately. As well as looking after my own fleet, I also do some work for other local hauliers, which was how I started off…” Looking to the future, Damian intends to invest in ensuring that his workshop remains at the cutting edge. “I’m planning to update Best Wishes To Toner Transport, from the workshop and it’s an area that I will

become more involved in. I can see some potential for growth there so I will probably take on another mechanic or two and make a real go of it.” Meanwhile, the state-of-theart workshop also has a vital role to play in ensuring the upkeep of Damian’s own eyecatching fleet. “I keep them in good nick and I know them inside-out,” he concludes. “I’ve been familiar with Volvos all my life and I’d be extremely confident working with them, Even if a driver calls in with a problem, I’d usually be able to get them going again just by talking to him over the phone. But we keep them very well maintained, which keeps breakdowns to a minimum. “I have a good, fresh fleet, which is going very well for me but I’d be hoping to upgrade them inside the next few years. “All in all, I’m happy with how the business is going and we are kept busy. When haulage and trucks is all you know, and you have a good interest in it, then there’s nothing else you want to do.” Damian’s great passion for trucks transcends into every facet of Toner Transport and manifests itself in a professional, punctual and efficient international haulage / commercial workshop service that’s second to none.

ecked in the company colours, the DAFs were immediately put to work and have impressed their new owners with their fuel-efficiency, power, comfort and style. The task of transporting high quality, natural stone products all over Ireland is not an easy one, but these trucks are clearly up to the task. The Euro 6CFs provide maximum performance at minimal operating costs. Their MX13 engines are packed full of innovative technologies to enhance responsiveness and reliability. A lightweight, steel chassis ensures stability, giving drivers excellent handling on any journey. “We endeavour to keep our vehicles fresh and these new tractor units represent a significant investment in our fleet,” McMonagle Stone operations manager Daniel McMonagle says. “We have a growing customer-base both at home and abroad and the new trucks will play an important part in further growing our business. They are equipped to handle heavy loads which are the norm in our line of business. We have been customers of TBF Thompson for the last 15 years and have always found their trucks – whether they be DAF or Hino – to be reliable, robust and economical.” An improvement in fuel economy has been noted since the new automatic trucks arrived. “A big factor in us choosing automatic was the greater fuel economy they offer. The two lads who are driving them, John Griffin and Gerry Byrne, were a bit apprehensive at first, but now they would find it hard to go back to manual. They have adjusted very well to automatic.” The McMonagle fleet also consists of a pair of DAF CF430s, two Iveco Stralis and one Hino. They are complimented by eight trailers comprising two Dennison drop-side tippers, two Montracon drop-side flats, two SDC 40ft flats, one SDC skelly and a new Farlow 40ft dropside flat with mounted brackets.

McMonagle Stone employs eight professional, courteous and highly-skilled drivers, including the aforementioned John Griffin and Gerry Byrne who have been with the company for 30 and 15 years respectively. “They got the new trucks because they have been with us the longest,” smiles Daniel. “We are happy with the fleet we have at the moment, but that’s not to say we won’t invest in one or two new trucks again next year.” McMonagle Stone was founded as a limited company in 1988 (it had been trading as a sole trader for well over a decade before then) by Daniel’s father, Dan, to supply decorative stone. The Mountcharles, Co. Donegal-headquartered company, which also has an office at Cloghran beside Dublin Airport, has become known as a leading supplier of natural stone and bespoke products to the Irish and international markets. currently 54 staff employed between Kilbeggan and Crawley, with sales director Danny McGee, production director Ivor Jones, sales and marketing manager Peter Flynn and financial controller Patrick Farnon spearheading the minibus producer’s continued growth and expansion. “The UK market accounts for between 70 and 80 per cent of our overall sales,” explains Peter, who is based in the Crawley office. “But what is often overlooked is the
fact that we have a huge share of the Irish market as well. We wouldn’t have got to where we are now without the support of our Irish customers. We’ve a new Irish sales manager in PJ Keoghan and have introduced a new 19-seater with a large boot space in a van conversion, which we are sure will be well received by Irish client base. “We’re an ambitious Irish company whose long-term goal is to be a world leader in vehicle conversion

manufacturing. Every week, we are building partnerships that will enable us to provide a complete package across the globe. “We have a new website www.evm.ie will all our latest products and the ability to build a quotation request for your new vehicle online.” EVM recently became one of the first minibus manufacturers to be awarded European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval (ECWVTA) across its range. The European approval scheme is based on the concept of ‘type approval’. This approval ensures that all EVM minibuses, systems and components meet stringent European Community environmental and safety standards on every single EVM model. This certification is accepted throughout the EU without the need for further testing and EVM have now processes in place to produce a Certificate of Conformity (COC) for each vehicle manufactured. What this means to the customer is that there are no lengthy waiting periods for IVA tests of COIFs etc. They simply insure their vehicle and drive away. EVM is also proud to be on the first minibus manufacturers in the world to have been awarded with ECE R66 Rollover Protection. Peter explains: “As with the ECWVTA, this approval ensures that all our products meet European and worldwide environmental and safety standards. We were even ahead of Mercedes themselves in achieving Rollover Protection approval.” There is no doubt that EVM’s decision to use the excellent Sprinter as its base vehicle has been a major factor in its success. EVM’s main products – the XClusive, Avantgarde, Elegance, Grand Tourer, Classic and Shuttle – are huge sellers in the UK. Its two latest models – the Cabrio Sprinter and the M1 Sprinter – have also caused quite a stir. The Cabrio has a retractable glass roof which opens and closes at the touch of a button. It is the ultimate in open top luxury touring for city and scenic tours.

The hub of the EVM operation is in Kilbeggan, where Ivor Jones oversees a professional and dedicated team who produce approximately 200 vehicles a year between them. There are over 30 shop-floor workers and 10 in the mezzanine office. “We have staff who have been building buses for 15 or 16 years. So standardised is this flow that EVM focuses its buying on three popular colours – white, silver and charcoal metallic. Nine times out of 10, the customers go with the factory paint and vinyl. Kieran Ahern Mobile Tyres is celebrating five years in business
A perfect fit Celebrating five years since first starting up his own mobile tyre fitting service, Tralee native Kieran Ahern experienced his busiest year to date over the past 12 months. Irish Trucker & Light Commercials managed to catch up with the man himself and have a discussion about his unique business venture.
S
ince starting up his operation in 2011, Kieran Ahern has learned that reliability - above everything else - is the crucial element in making his kind of business work. This past summer saw him called out as many times as 10 per day around the Tralee area (and beyond) when times were at their busiest, repairing everything from damaged tractor tyres to a mere puncture for a car. Kieran’s customers are assured of his dependability and it’s the main reason that he gains repeats business from them, along with the quality of the service in

which he provides. Indeed Kieran Ahern Mobile Tyre Fitting Services has earned a glowing reputation all around Kerry, and across its borders, for the quality of work it provides in roadside assistance, whether it be for truck, car, van or agri machinery. “We’re based in Scart, Gortlea, Tralee in Co Kerry,” explained Kieran. “We’re established since 2011 and I’m the only full-time employee here at the minute.” That staff count may well change if Kieran continues to experience the busy periods which he did during 2015, but for
now his company is very much a one-man operation. When you consider the range of services that he provides, that is plenty to keep one man busy all year round. Having been involved in mechanical work for most of his working life, Kieran is quite content with the work he is doing at the minute and is happy to work 12 to 14-hours days when the time comes for it. The alternative, as explained, when he first decided to start the company back in 2011 certainly didn’t appeal to him as much. “I change tyres, I do a call out service, a

bit of agri machinery, trucks and fix punctures,” he said. “I’ve always been stuck in the mechanical trade and at the time I started this company up there wasn’t much work about. So instead of going on the dole I started my own company. “I had been driving trucks for 10 years and I was into the mechanical end of it as well – it’s something that I enjoy doing.” Getting satisfaction from your work is always a major plus, often translating into good production, which explains the success of Kieran’s venture to some degree. While this time of year brings about the less busy times for those in Kieran’s line of work, he’s still satisfied with the year (along with the previous four) that he has had, and is as optimistic as ever over what the future might hold. “Things are kind of quiet right now alright and when I started out with this idea it was certainly tough,” he said, when asked about the timing of his start-up in the midst of an economic downturn. “But things have turned around since then and you can see it beginning to pick up now. From what I’ve seen and experienced, your price has a lot to do with this kind of work and I try to keep as fair as possible for customers.” IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS
He continued: “During the summer time I would be flat out with tractors and all that. On a very busy day I could be called out 10 times and some of those could be at any time of day with the silage and bailing going on.” Kieran keeps his work almost exclusively within Kerry too, with one Tralee-based customer helping to keep him on his toes and ensure him busy times almost 12 months a year. “Most of the work I do would be around Kerry and there is one company in particular that I’d do a lot of work for – that’s Dillon’s Waste in Tralee,” said Kieran. “When I first started out with them I was on call 24 hours a day with them but things have got a little less crazy now.” The fleet Kieran operates with currently stands at one van, which makes sense when he’s the only staff member, but he hasn’t ruled out expansion for his company some time down the line. “I’ve one van, which is a Master 2003 and I can tyre change for any tyre with up to 24-inch rims,” he explained. So with other roadside assistance outfits operating within, or at least servicing, the Tralee are, why do Kieran’s customers tend to choose him first? We let the man himself explain:
“I think customers choose us first because of our service,” he stated. “Because I do a good job and they can call me at 2 or 3am in the morning and they know that I’ll be there for them. That’s what the customer wants. “I also think that we are very fair pricewise. Like anything, I’m not going to become a millionaire doing this kind of work, but once I can keep the food on the table I won’t have any complaints.” One can only assume that the realistic approach Kieran has taken is part of the reason why his company turned five years old in 2016. So what do the next 12 months hold for Kieran Ahern? “My hopes will be to try and keep the whole show on the road,” Kieran laughed. “To keep getting the customers in – that would be great. “With regards to taking on a member of staff, I’ve taken on no one yet but I probably would have to if it got any busier than it did this past summer, having been out 10 times a day sometimes. “Hopefully, that will be the case.” Given the glowing reputation Kieran’s earned already, not many would bet against it.
