Growth in major truck markets: DAF expands market position in Europe
DAF Trucks’ market share in the heavy-duty segment (16 tonnes+) of the European truck market increased to 14.6% in 2015. "We have achieved growth in almost all major markets", says Richard Zink, member of the DAF Board of Management and responsible for Marketing & Sales. "We supply the best and most fuel efficient trucks ever, important drivers behind this growth." With a market share of 14.6%, DAF further strengthened its position in the heavy-duty segment of the European truck market in 2015 (2014: 13.8%). DAF saw its market share increase in major truck markets, such as Germany (10.8% market share), Great Britain (23.9%), Spain (11.3%), Poland (18.9%), the Netherlands (29.4%) and the Czech Republic (17.2%). In France and Italy, its market share stabilised at 12.0% and 10.2% respectively. In the heavy-duty segment, DAF is the market leader in the Netherlands, Great Britain, Poland and Hungary. In Belgium and the Czech Republic, DAF is market leader in tractors. In 2015, DAF registered around 39,400 vehicles in the European heavy-duty segment, an increase of 26% compared to the more than 31,200 trucks a year earlier. Total market for heavy-duty commercial vehicles rose by about 19% to more than 269,000 units, compared to just over 226,000 in 2014. For this year, DAF expects the European market for heavy-duty trucks to be between 260,000 and 290,000 vehicles. Light segment In the light segment - in which DAF offers the LF - the European truck market increased by more than 5% in 2015 to 49,000 units (2014: 46,500). DAF saw its market share in this 6 to 16-tonne class increase slightly from 8.9% in 2014 to 9.0% in the past year. An important contribution came from DAF's success in the UK, where it achieved a market share of over 36% in the LF segment. Further growth outside the European Union DAF has also further strengthened its market position outside the European Union. DAF made its entrance into Malaysia and Colombia. In Taiwan, a new assembly plant was opened to double production capacity for the LF, CF and XF models. With a market share of 17.8%, DAF is the largest European truck brand in Taiwan. The DAF factory in Ponta Grossa, Brazil increased production and commenced assembly of the versatile CF series and the PACCAR MX engine. DAF introduced its complete Euro 6 range in Turkey, where the new emission legislation came into effect on 1 January 2016. DAF Transport Efficiency "We are proud to have further reinforced our market position in 2015, both within and outside Europe", says Richard Zink, Director of Marketing & Sales. "Over the past year, DAF has introduced important product innovations that make our popular CF and XF models up to 5% more fuel efficient. In line with our DAF Transport Efficiency philosophy, numerous innovations were also implemented for the LF distribution truck, resulting in an even greater return per kilometre. Along with our extensive package of services and professional dealer organisation, DAF's comprehensive product range forms the basis for continuing growth toward our medium-term objective of 20% market share in Europe."

VisionTrack Launches Next Generation 3G Vehicle Cameras for Fleets
VisionTrack today announced the launch of a new 3G vehicle camera that is capable of transmitting footage using extremely low amounts of data, making 3G cameras an affordable technology solution to aid road safety initiatives and protect against fraudulent claims. The VT2000 is the in-vehicle CCTV specialist’s latest product in a line-up of full HD 1080p cameras, with built-in 3G M2M Module, GPS and GLONASS for improved accuracy. It easily streams footage using advanced technology that reduces the amount of data needed to send snapshot video, meaning a ten-second clip can be transferred in under 350kB. Fleet managers therefore benefit from increased volumes of driving footage, not only aiding proactive driver monitoring and training programmes but also giving faster access to vital video and telemetry data in the event of an incident. Vision Track, Managing Director, Simon Marsh, VisionTrack’s Managing Director, said: “3G cameras are not new, but Simon Marsh because of the size of the video files, which in some cases can be as large as 12,000kB for a ten-second clip, transmitting and storing footage has up to now been cost prohibitive for mass deployment. In the event of an incident, fleet managers receive First Notification of Loss (FNOL) through our camera, with a ten-second 350kB snapshot clip sent in as little as five seconds, and have the option to instantly request full HD footage to give them complete visibility of the event. Furthermore, the camera will stay live for five minutes, even with the ignition off, in order to protect against claims from ‘ghost passengers’. If needed, this can be remotely streamed back to our platform. This enables fleet managers to quickly access information for peace of mind and helps protect themselves and their employees against exaggerated and fraudulent claims. He added: “A quality clip recorded on our VT2000 camera can be sent and uploaded to our platform in seconds, even in areas where 3G network coverage is poor, because it transmits smaller files. Such footage can usually only be sent in larger files, which can take considerably longer to upload in weak signal areas – if it uploads at all – and requires larger amounts of potentially costly data.” Alongside its recording and transmission capabilities, the VT2000 platform generates reports on vehicle location, speed, impact force and driving styles, allowing fleet managers to monitor drivers at all times. Drivers can be additionally supported through the camera’s real-time audible notifications, warning of speeding and erratic behaviours, allowing them to alter performance and encouraging safer driving. Simon concluded: “With the continual prevalence of crash for cash and 180,000 reported casualties on the road in Great Britain from June 2014 to June 2015 alone*, the need for a robust and scalable vehicle camera and tracking solution is clear. We truly are at the forefront of our industry and are in a strong position to meet this need, effectively combining both elements to provide invaluable insight into fleet operations and enable total visibility of activities and driving standards.” For more information on the VisionTrack portfolio of products, please visit www.visiontrack.com.

Kaarlaid is growing thanks to Faymonville’s product variety
The Estonian transport company Kaarlaid can look back on 15 years of company history and has every reason to celebrate this. Furthermore, a historic moment in Kaarlaids cooperation with Faymonville is coming up. 49 Faymonville trailers are currently in action at Kaarlaid - the 50th is soon to come. It must be highlighted that Kaarlaid has almost all trailer types from Faymonville in its fleet. There are f.ex; multiple MultiMAX semi-trailers, MegaMAX low bed trailers and TeleMAX flatbed semi-trailers. Kaarlaid also uses a multifunctional VarioMAX, a light weight MultiMAX Plus semi-trailer or a PrefaMAX to transport concrete precast elements. Faymonville offers for Kaarlaid all sorts of transport equipment solutions, simply flexible … to the MAX! Just the thing for Kaarlaids CEO Andres Lampe. “I made a good experience with the Faymonville products and found out about the quality of those trailers.” Kaarlaid is one of the leading suppliers for heavy and special transport in the Baltic region and Scandinavia. They transport goods up to 100 tons that can also happen to be of 60m length and 14m height. Next to the adequate trailers, Andres Lampe was also impressed by Faymonville’s working method and handling. “Visits at Faymonville feel like home. Moreover, I get a quick and precise answer to all my questions. This reactivity is very important to me and everything is discussed in my native language.” This individual and intense customer care is a brand label at Faymonville. For Kaarlaid, this is among other things a condition that the cooperation over the past 15 years has been expanded so greatly. This speedy process is also kept up after the sale. “If necessary, spare parts for vehicle maintenance are always getting to us on the fastest possible way.”
Continental tyres ‘even’ things up for Fagan & Whalley
Simon Brindley, workshop manager at Fagan & Whalley’s Coventry operation, has around 50 tractor units and 100 trailers to keep on the road. That’s an awful lot of tyres running in and out of the yard every day, with the added complication that the majority of the haulier’s 360 trailers are on a constant rotation, so he may not have seen them for weeks. He says, “As a company we set ourselves high standards of mechanical service and maintenance: safety, consistent fleet performance and reliability are our primary aims. The last things I need are unnecessary complications. With over 22 months now of running Continental tyres on our trailers, and 10 months on tractor steer axles, I am seeing far fewer issues than in the past. Tyres are probably any haulier’s second biggest running cost, so at Fagan & Whalley we regularly trial various makes, to see what they might contribute in terms of economy and safety.” Continental tyres were introduced to the Fagan & Whalley fleet in early 2014, when an order of 100 new Lawrence David trailers were specified with the manufacturer’s HTR2 product. Since then, with support from Continental’s local Field Service Manager, Paul Ridler, the haulier trialled the new Conti Hybrid HS3 steer axle tyre at the start of 2015, and is now using them on a fast-growing number of tractor units. “One of the biggest issues any operator can face,” said Simon Brindley, “is the massive financial penalties uneven tyre wear can generate. Degradation on tyre shoulders, just from routine running, means tyres have to be taken off and replaced with anything up to 40% wear still available across the rest of the surface. That’s not acceptable, and it is one big difference I have noticed with the Continental tyres – we get good even wear from them and that is delivering considerable savings for us as we get the full ‘natural life’ from them.” The Fagan & Whalley fleet consists largely of Scania units, each averaging around 140,000kms a year on long distance tramping work. Through drivers’ daily checks on tread depth, pressures, surface wear and damage, as well as reports from their own in-house routine maintenance inspections, the company keeps a close eye on the overall performance of the tyres. Our drivers are a good judge of a tyre and they will soon speak up if they don’t feel comfortable with what they’re running on,” says Brindley, “They are the first to notice uneven wear causing a vehicle to get pulled around too much by road camber. The same with pressure levels, they know they get a better, more comfortable drive when pressures are kept consistently accurate.” Continental will also be making an appearance in the Fagan & Whalley fleet on a tractor drive axle. The haulier has been making plans to trial the new generation drive axle tyre from Continental, the HD3, early this year. “We are content with what we’ve seen over the past months in terms of quality and performance from Continental,” he says, “I’m certainly hoping for more of the same from Continental. If we get that we will be a very happy operator.” Continental develops intelligent technologies for transporting people and their goods. As a reliable partner, the international automotive supplier, tyre manufacturer, and industrial partner provides sustainable, safe, comfortable, individual, and affordable solutions. In 2015, the corporation generated preliminary sales of approximately €39.2 billion with its five divisions, Chassis & Safety, Interior, Powertrain, Tyres, and ContiTech.. Continental employs more than 208,000 people in 53 countries.

Thermo King Cools the Innovative DHL 'Double Decker High-Loader' Airline Catering Concept Truck
Thermo King has been part of the collaborative project for developing the new DHL concept airside catering truck now being tested at London Heathrow airport Thermo King, a manufacturer of transport temperature control solutions for a variety of mobile applications and a brand of Ingersoll Rand, partnered with DHL, a global logistics leader and provided the refrigeration solution Thermo King has been part of the collaborative project for developing the New DHL concept airside catering for the newly launched DHL ‘Double Decker Hightruck now being tested at London Heathrow airport Loader’ concept airline catering vehicle. Being part of the design project, Thermo King worked closely with Mallaghan, one of the fastest-growing airport ground support equipment manufacturers, who built the body for the DHL concept vehicle. Thermo King UT-1200 unit was selected as the unit that will provide the optimal temperature controlled environment inside the uniquely designed catering truck. Specifically developed for under-mount applications on trucks and drawbar trailers, the UT-1200 marks the industry’s benchmark in reliability, performance, durability and efficiency featuring low fuel consumption and reduced engine emissions with the Thermo King GreenTech™ engine[1]. “The unique element of our vehicle’s design is that when in transit, it is under the 4 metre height restriction within the airport. However once engaged with the aircraft, the vehicle’s roof can be raised and the internal lifting deck can be operated,” said Martin Bryce, engineering manager UK and Ireland at DHL. “This enables the truck to achieve 80 percent more payload potential, which should operationally reduce the total number of vehicles necessary further improving the efficiency and carbon footprint reduction for DHL and the airport.” “The vehicle has been designed to operate within the London Low Emission Zone (LEZ) and meets all safety and environmental standards set by the Transport for London,” said Steve Williams, area sales manager in the United Kingdom for Thermo King. “We are pleased to be part of this project and to provide solutions that contribute to the significant environmental and operational improvements achieved by DHL”. To meet the challenging temperature control requirements set by the unique design and ensure good air circulation, Thermo King designed and installed additional fans on the lower deck. Temperature mapping carried out on the upper and lower decks following the build and installation, verified good temperature management in all areas with the ceiling fans ensuring good airflow distribution to complete the cycle.

Under the banner ‘Regeneration? No Thanks’, Iveco will display an 18 tonne New Eurocargo, Stralis Hi-Way tractor unit and a Trakker 8x4 rigid, each benefiting from Iveco’s patented HI-SCR engine technology to meet emissions limits without the need for exhaust gas recirculation. If the ContiPressureCheck™ system is ordered as an optional extra the tyre sensors and Central Control Unit (CCU) are also included on delivery, however these components can also be easily retrofitted at a later date. From the beginning of this month, Solaris has started to deliver the first 60 city buses equipped with ContiPressureCheck™ to a customer based in Krakow. The ContiPressureCheck™ system uses sensors inside the tyre to measure both the tyre pressure as well as the temperature inside the tyre in real time. The data is continually sent to the cab and presented to the driver via a display. If the tyre pressure deviates from the correct specified value, ContiPressureCheck™ warns the driver immediately. Measures can then be taken to rectify the situation and return the air pressure in the tyre to its normal level. In this way the system helps to reduce fuel consumption and tyre wear as well as increasing mileage. The efficiency of buses can be upgraded, reducing operating costs and reducing environmental impact, thanks to lower CO2 emissions and a longer useable lifespan of the tyres. In addition, ContiPressureCheck™ makes a valuable contribution to passenger safety. ContiPressureCheck™ is quick and simple to install and can also be added during later tyre changeovers. It is compatible with different telematic systems, allowing the data on the tyre pressure and temperature to show up in an integrated display as well as on the telematic network. This way the collected data can also be downloaded to an external device, simplifying the tyre management of the fleet.

Hicks Transport hitches-up again with DAF Trucks
Hicks Transport has turned back to DAF for its latest flag-ship tractor unit. The new Euro-6 DAF XF 510 FTG with Super Space Cab harks back to some of the company earliest years, in the mid-80s, when among a largely DAF fleet it operated one of the very first DAF 3300 trucks on its Middle East operations, providing full load services to Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq. Today, with the focus much more on the UK and mainland Europe, the South Wales haulier has been operating a two-marque fleet, but was happy to look again at a brand with which it had so many successful links. “We have a policy of continuous review of all the quality tractor manufacturers, to make sure we have the best equipment for our work,” comments Terry Hicks, a director of the company. “So when we looked closely at this latest DAF we were more than happy to consider it,” he said. That willingness to consider an old favourite resulted in the arrival of the XF 510, bought through local dealer Watts Truck & Van using the services of PACCAR Financial. Terry is genuinely pleased to confirm that all is well with the new arrival, saying, “This is our first new DAF for many years, and though it’s still early days, of course, it is running well. The driver is delighted with it and it is very compatible with the rest of our fleet. I don’t think anyone would say there’s a bad truck around these days, but this new DAF does look like very good value for money indeed. Alongside that, making the decision to take DAF back into the fleet comes down to overall experience in the business and personal preference. Everything goes full circle, so we are certainly not ruling out the possibility of seeing the marque back in the fleet in greater numbers as we move forward.” Members of both the TA and RHA, Hicks Transport runs a mix of regular in-house contract work and general haulage that, alongside being a member of the ‘TPN’ pallet network, mean demands on the fleet can vary significantly in terms of load weights and distances covered. It makes the job of monitoring fuel consumption more difficult, admits Terry Hicks. “Our tractor fleet can go out quite light and come back at maximum weight, or vice versa, so while fuel is very important to us, we are not able to monitor it as closely as operators with routine loads and regular routes. That’s why we use careful vehicle comparisons as part of the monitoring process: the DAF is already averaging very well against the other two marques on the fleet, even though it has a lot of bedding down to do yet.” The new unit has a dedicated driver, which helps Hicks Transport with its evaluation process, and the company is also looking increasingly at telematics as a future source of management information. The vehicle has been supplied with a DAF MultiSupport two-year R&M package, though the company also has its own well-equipped service facilities at its base on the outskirts of Newport. Concluded Terry Hicks, “When you’re a family business, with three generations working in it, you know instinctively that being masters of your own destiny, especially in something as fundamental as service and repair, is vital. It lets us maintain the flexibility and reliability that has helped us build the business over the years.”
Michelin hauls for Harts Haulage
Cornwall-based Hart’s Haulage has switched to a 100 per cent Michelin policy, after a trial revealed the premium tyres deliver “costefficiency, reliability and longevity”. The family-run company previously operated a mixed tyre policy, but made the move to Michelin following a trial with a set of X MultiWay 3D XDE drive and XZE all-position tyres. “Tyre-related downtime was an issue we wanted to address,” says Hart’s Haulage Director and founder Neil Hart. “After we witnessed the improved reliability and extra mileage our test Michelin tyre set offered, we made the switch, and haven’t looked back since.” “Our trucks are often delivering to building sites and quarries – requiring tyres that can handle the rough terrain and manage just as well on country lanes or motorways. The flexibility and reliability the X MultiWay 3D range offers is worth its weight in gold,” adds Hart.

Its double tops for the Ford Transit at the Business Van of the Year Awards The Transit badge has to be the most iconic and recognised in commercial circles, with the Ford celebrating its 50th birthday in 2015. And in 2016, the Transit has won the Best Small Trades Van and Best Small Delivery Van at the Business Van of the Year at the Business Van of the Year Awards. Now in their third year, the Business Van of the Year Awards, sponsored by van leasing experts Vanarama, are the premier awards for the light commercial vehicle industry. And this year competition was even fiercer as the manufacturers battled it out for the top honours.
Best Small Delivery Van: Ford Transit Courier 1.0-litre Ecoboost Trend The Transit Courier's compact dimensions are perfectly suited to urban environments, where it slides into tight spaces. But with its 2.3 cubic load area and 660kg payload, it's certainly no lightweight. In fact it almost matches that of vans from a class above, reckoned the award judges, but all underpinned by low running costs with over 50mpg fuel economy. Ford also offers exceptional aftersales support from its Transit centres and a strong warranty package too, which are hugely important considerations for all businesses in these challenging times. Judge, Eddie Parker from GE Capital Fleet said: "The Courier takes a new stance to a small van, bringing a successful formula into a new sector. It's also jam packed with options such as, Ford's in-car connectivity system Sync, with emergency assist and Applink on the Trend trim, sat-nav, cruise control and reversing camera." Best Small Trades Van: Ford Transit Custom 2.2 TDCi Trend
The Custom is the mid-sized Transit and adds this award to an impressive back catalogue dating from its launch in 2013. It has built a reputation for being great to drive, affordable to run, practical and safe. Little wonder the judges thought it was the right van for small trades. Judges praised its appearance, car like drive and great cargo carrying ability: the Custom in L3 form has a practical load volume of 6.0 cu m with a 1357kg payload, and can take three Euro pallets with a one-metre high load. The 125PS 2.2-litre TDCi also boasts a 36.2 mpg combined fuel consumption figure. One of judges, Jayson Whittington, manager, commercial and leisure vehicle valuations at Glass's summed the Transit Custom up: "The Transit Custom boasts fresh looks, combined with practical load space."
Martyn Collins, editor of Business Vans, said: "Choosing the right vehicles for the job is a serious business and one which many van operators get wrong - sometimes with costly consequences. So these Awards highlight the best vans, financing and business support programmes for traders, small businesses and small fleet van operators in the SME sector." The Business Van of the Year Awards were judged by an independent panel of experts: Dave Bowen, managing director, BT Fleet - chair of the judges. Andy Alderson, managing director, Vanarama Duncan Ward, regional operational director, BCA Jayson Whittington, manager of commercial vehicle and leisure valuations, Glass's Eddie Parker, fleet CV consultant EMEA, GE Capital Fleet James Davis, director of commercial vehicles, Manheim

DAF 8x2 rear-steer offers ideal mix for Hogan Concrete
Hogan Concrete, part of the Hogan group of companies serving the construction industry, has taken delivery of the first concrete-mixer-bodied DAF 8x2 rear-steer chassis in the UK. The new Euro-6 DAF CF 400 FAX eight-wheeler is fitted with an eight-cubic-metre capacity CIFA SL8 body, and, prior to entering service, is being exhibited at the Concrete Show in Birmingham this week. The company, which also has DAF LF 7.5 tonne and XF tractor unit product on its fleet, has selected the 32-tonne GVW 8x2 rear-steer chassis to provide additional payload benefits while retaining all the handling and manoeuvrability characteristics generally associated with a 6x4 chassis. The CF 400 FAX is powered by a 10.8-litre, 400bhp PACCAR MX-11 engine. “DAF’s FAX rear-steer eight-wheeler is well-proven in the agricultural sector,” said Managing Director, Kevin Hogan, +353 18612275 “and I was confident that the chassis’ attributes would obw.eur@vpgsensors.com translate well into our line of work. DAF’s standard CF 8x4 Construction model is a tough, durable truck, but it would not have been a suitable replacement for the 6x4 CF. The FAX 8x2 provides us with significantly more carrying capacity while retaining the manoeuvrability of a 6x4,” he said, “It’s critical for us to have a vehicle that can handle on-and-offroad operations, make light work of tight site access and one which enables our dispatch team to provide the service our customers require.” CIFA’s eight-cubic-metre drum capacity SL8 Truckmixer body is constructed from wear-resistant steel. It comes equipped with EKOS drum closing gate and pneumatically operated SL45 telescopic chutes – rather than a folding mechanism – resulting in less handling for the operator and, consequently, faster dispensing. The Italian-manufactured CIFA body was supplied and fitted by the company’s agent in the UK, Spanners Mixer Hire in Market Deeping. “We’re a mixed fleet,” continued Hogan, “but, over the years, the DAF marque has out-performed its competitors in all areas – product quality, reliability and aftersales, and that’s no mean feat considering the tough work our vehicles endure. “We use Holyhead Trucks in Mona, Anglesey for regular servicing and maintenance while the main DAF Dealer, North West Trucks in Liverpool supplies our vehicles – both are superb. The collaboration between DAF and Spanners, the CIFA agent, has been first-class, and has ensured the acquisition of a truck to our exacting specification. “Summing up the whole experience, our DAF vehicles are delivered on time, to specification and within budget – what more can you ask for?” IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Axles and cabs set quality standards: 50 years of DAF production in Belgium
DAF Trucks in Oevel (Westerlo, Belgium) opened its cab factory 50 years ago. Nowadays DAF Trucks Vlaanderen N.V. is a leading and ultra-modern production facility that has seen continuous investments of which around € 600 million in the last 15 years. More than 2,200 employees currently produce 200 cabs and 450 axles a day for the popular DAF CF and XF trucks. The fact that DAF in Westerlo is now investing € 100 million in a completely new cab paint shop demonstrates the truck manufacturer’s confidence in the future of its production facilities in Belgium. In order to meet the increasing demand for DAF trucks, the production facilities needed to be extended in the mid-1960s. Although DAF had enough space on its site in Eindhoven, there was a shortage of workers in the area. DAF therefore turned its attention towards the Kempen region in Belgium, where the closure of mines and regional diamond polishing factories had created a large potential workforce. A site covering 40,000 m2 along the A13 highway at Oevel was acquired, representing an investment of BEF 90 million. The purchase contract was signed the day before Christmas 1964. Construction of a 12,000 m2 factory began almost immediately, to be ready for operation in the first half of 1966. ‘Made in Belgium’ Since 1966, trucks from DAF are for an important part ‘Made in Belgium’, as the first four cabs came off the production line on 5 May of that year. The production increased rapidly, as evidenced by the fact that already on 5 July, the 1,000th cab was transported from Oevel to Eindhoven. On 26 August, DAF Vlaanderen proudly reported that it was already able to produce ‘any type of cab’. In the meantime, the new paint shop was already running at full speed. After two impressive Müller presses were relocated from Eindhoven to Belgium on 1 December – a job that took two months – the factory finally became genuinely ‘selfsupporting’. Just a few months later, DAF decided to expand the cab factory preparing for the introduction of a whole new generation of trucks with revolutionary tilting cab in 1968. Axle production also transferred to Belgium The high quality of the cabs built by DAF Vlaanderen was the reason why the fast-growing DAF company also moved the axle factory from Eindhoven to Westerlo in 1971. A new 13,000 m2 factory was added to the existing production line, increasing the length of the façade along the motorway to an impressive 380 metres. The number of employees gradually rose towards 1,000.
1985 saw further massive investment in DAF Vlaanderen. For painting cabs a completely new factory was realized, at that time the most environmentally friendly in Europe. The axle factory also witnessed significant innovation less than three years later, in order to guarantee highest quality and performance of the axles. Because these are developed and manufactured in-house, DAF axles are always tailored exactly to the individual vehicle type for maximum efficiency.
DAF Vlaanderen continues to build Investment in DAF's axle and cab factory in Westerlo continued in the new millennium, particularly for the new generation of Euro 6 vehicles that was launched in 2013. Production of the ‘cab bodies was largely robotised, further improving quality and working conditions for the employees. For the same reasons, the production area for the ground breaking Super Space Cabs also received a complete overhaul. Over the last 15 years, DAF Trucks has invested some € 600 million in its axle and cab factory in Westerlo, which delivered its two-millionth axle in 2011 and its one-millionth cab in 2014. In 2015, construction of a completely new cab paint shop began. This will be the most modern facility of its kind in Europe and will increase production capacity of the cab factory by 50%. The new cab paint shop will play an important role in the further growth of DAF, in Europe and beyond. Production based on customer orders according the ’just-in-time’ principle DAF Vlaanderen produces axles and cabs ‘sequential’ in accordance with the ’just-in-time’ principle the same as all other DAF factories. This means that cabs and axles are delivered to the DAF assembly plant in Eindhoven and to Leyland Trucks in Great Britain at 50 years of DAF production in exactly the right moment and in the right sequence, based on customer Westerlo Vlaanderen plant orders. The PACCAR Production System assumes that there is always room for further improvement and that employees know like no one else how their jobs can be done even better, more intelligently and more efficiently. “Fantastic recognition” "The fact that we are now celebrating 50 years of DAF production in Belgium is a wonderful recognition of our more than 2,200 employees," said Harrie Schippers, president of DAF Trucks N.V. "Thanks to their commitment and dedication, we are able to build trucks that lead the market in terms of reliability, comfort and quality. With our continuous investments in DAF Trucks Vlaanderen, DAF demonstrates its confidence in the future of its plant in Belgium."

Dave Bowen, Chairman of the Judges and Managing Director of BT fleet added: "The Movano is a tried and tested vehicle that has undergone light body panel revisions recently. The company’s contract with Irish Water is one that has
been agreed upon recently, with Water Services having putting forth a 25-year strategic plan for clean and safer drinking water nationwide. So why were Munster Drain Services chosen above other competitors for their contract? “All of our people are trained to the specific requirements,” John outlined. “I think our customers choose us first because of our response and our personal approach to each and every project. Using state of the art equipment is something the company is renowned for
to our customers. I think it’s down to the dedicated staff & service that we provide, to be honest.” John’s own background explains where the company’s specific touch with customers comes from. As a plumber, he didn’t just learn about pipes and drainage but discovered more about the human aspect of the business and having to tend to the customer’s requirements. My background is plumbing but in 1987 I moved into drainage services and high pressure water jetting to fulfil a demand I saw from our industrial and commercial customers. “In the time that we started we’ve found that customers
require different types of cleaning. We’re now dealing with pressures up to 1400 bar pressure so you have to know what you’re doing and, as I said: safety is a paramount part of this business. “We employ a safety specialist to help us keep all training requirements up to date and we boast of obtaining a Safe-T certification this certifies us in having an integrated safety management system in our company. All of our field staff are trained to the highest standards in relation to all the services we provide to our customers. “We are affiliated to the Water Jetting Association based in UK, and all

operators of Jetting equipment are trained by the WJA and hold certification for this safety system. We carry out quite a lot of confined entry works, to sumps and tanks, this work is very dangerous work and we take particular attention when it comes to this training. We employ a specialist company to train all field operators in confined entry and rescue, and continually audit the systems we use to improve safety. And safety will always continue to be paramount to Munster Drain Services. In a policy statement to employees, customers and visitors, which can be read on the company’s website, John outlines the crucial aspect of Health and Safety. “It is the Policy of this Company to protect, so far as is reasonably practicable, persons not employed by this Company who may be affected by our activities,” it reads. “It is our objective to provide, so far as is reasonably practicable, a safe and healthy work environment and it is our plan to meet our obligation’s as prescribed in the Safety Health & Welfare at Work Act 2005, (No. 7 of 2005) and all the subsequent regulations.
“The allocation of duties for safety matters and particular arrangements to implement the policy are set out in the Company safety statement. “The policy will be kept up to date particularly as the business changes in nature and size. To ensure this, the policy and the way in which it has operated will be reviewed as required. “The success of this Policy will depend on your cooperation. It is therefore important that you read this document carefully and understand your role and the overall arrangements for health and safety.” As for the New Year, which has brought about new business, John is intent of following the trend which has seen the company develop into a success story down through the years. “We intend on growing the business again in 2016, starting organised projects and winning new contracts,” he said. “So if it’s drain service or high pressure water jetting you need - whether it is cleaning, No-dig underground pipe rehabilitation, robotic cutting, Testing, CCTV Surveying, tank cleaning, “Hydo-demolition, Industrial water blasting - look no further than Munster Drain Services.”

In addition we offer a range of high pressure pre wash units to wash tankers, ejector trailers and municipal waste collector trucks. conceived to save businesses time and money. Meanwhile, at entry level, the Nilfisk Alto Truck Booster jet wash is a simple, robust and corrosion-proof hot water stationary unit designed for outdoor use, enabling constant cleaning of trucks, buses, vans, commercial and construction vehicles and equipment. Reflecting on the inception of Clarke Auto Wash Ltd., Vincent Clarke reveals: “I was involved with another company that was active in the filling station / petrol pump / garage equipment environment and a recession hit in the 1980s and jobs were shed. Clarke Auto Wash was the offspring of that. “We specialise primarily in vehicle washing equipment, especially automated vehicle washing equipment – generally the type of brush washes you see in filling stations for washing cars or trucks. We introduced the Christ brand in 1996 in to Ireland and have a close relationship ever since. The company is based in southern Germany and have been in existence for over a century manufacturing machines. The Christ family who own the business are now in their fourth generation and still growing. They are market leaders in vehicle wash equipment and pride themselves in their strong engineering tradition. This is shown to the extent of the in house manufacture of components including motors, gearboxes and electronic components. The Christ Group employ over 1400 people around Europe and
have a turnover of approx 150 million Euro annually, they produce a full range of vehicle washing equipment. “They also supply water recycling systems, which are becoming increasingly popular. It takes up to 500 litres of water to wash a truck and the recycling system can recover 95% of that. This whole area is environmentally sensitive, so it’s worth doing from both an environmental and economic point of view.” With County Councils about to increase commercial water rates, water recycling is becoming more important, we also install rain water harvesting systems, where rain water – and there’s Clarke Auto Wash is no shortage of that in Ireland – Ireland’s premier supplier of truck washing systems can be collected and stored in underground tanks for use in the washing units.” Regarding the other agencies, Vincent continues: “While Christ does a threebrush rollover, Iteco manufactures a single-brush truck wash – an enginedriven, diesel-powered, self-contained monobrush rollover system, with a 500litre water tank. “The Nilfisk high-pressure cleaners are ideal for one vehicle or small fleets and we also stock a full range of German made Kiehl detergents and vehiclecleaning chemicals. To support all of our units, we also supply Kaeser air
As well as supplying and installing vehicle washing systems, Clarke Auto Wash also provides an excellent back-up service

compressors and Airtec digital tyre inflation equipment we have also high flow models for fast truck tyre inflation accurate to +/- 0.3 psi.” The dedicated back-up service is extremely important and Clarke Auto Wash leaves nothing to chance when it comes to customer support. “Not only do we sell and install the equipment but we also have our own directly-employed service engineers maintaining the equipment on a 32-county basis,” Vincent confirms. “We carry about €120,000 worth of spare parts in stock and our service vans are professionally racked-out to ensure that everything we need to repair or service a washing unit is on hand.” We have experienced service engineer conveniently located in Dublin, the Midlands and Northern Ireland for a fast response to any service issues that may arise. Clarke Auto Wash has a market share of 30% in Ireland. This has been achieved on the back of hard work and graft, providing excellent products and unrivalled levels of service. As Vincent relates, it hasn’t all been plain sailing. “It has been difficult at times over the last couple of years with the economic downturn. When operators haven’t got money to spend, then the vehicle wash will be one of the first things to get chalked off. “This is all capital equipment which requires an initial outlay before there can be any payback. An average truck wash will cost between €50,000 and €60,000 and there are civil works to consider as well. The economic environment simply wasn’t there for that kind of expenditure a few years ago. “However, 2015 was very
A range of solutions is available, to suit every fleet owner
positive and we can see the truck and bus sector as one of our biggest growth areas , businesses are starting to invest again in the logistics side of things and they are planning vehicle washes as part of that package. Haulage seems to be bouncing back and tourist numbers are also increasing, which results in greater confidence amongst coach operators.” By providing an exceptional level of service, Clarke Auto Wash benefits from a high volume of repeat business. “We still have some of the customers we had when we started in ’92,” Vincent reveals. “When we install a washing unit, we view it as a long-term relationship and we are prepared to service that equipment throughout its lifetime. We look after each customer and we look forward to getting a repeat order from that customer. Fortunately, we have had many incidences of repeat business. “We have a number of different service packages to offer, including a preventative maintenance programme which guarantees fixed costs. However we are happy enough just to service and repair the units on a on call
IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS
basis if that’s what the customer prefers.” Clarke Auto Wash works hand in hand with some of the largest fleet operators in the country, including Aldi Supermarkets.“We have a truck wash in their Distribution Centre in Naas in ’04, and another one in their regional centre in Mitchelstown since 2011.” “While there is an initial capital outlay, it becomes apparent very soon of the cost effectiveness of any automated vehicle wash. Manual washing either done in house or by outside contractor is a fixed cost per vehicle. Growth of the vehicle fleet just increases these cleaning costs. Once the breakeven costs have been achieved, the wash costs will reduce, allowing for growth without additional costs. We are happy to discuss with potential customers the cost benefit analysis of any such project. We also have access to financial packages from leading lending agencies for finance on much of our equipment. “I know truck guys are very proud of their trucks but they can’t control the washing aspect of it when it’s being
done on an ad hoc basis. That’s why they opt for the automated system. While it is a substantial initial investment, the payoff is there for years being able to present clean trucks and buses to their customers in a fast and cost effective way. For guys who work in the food industry, for example, where clean trucks are essential, a truck wash is a godsend. “Likewise, in the bus and coach industry, having a dirty vehicle is a real no-no. The wash is a key element of their business.” Looking to the future, Vincent is confident that Clarke Auto Wash can continue to go from strength to strength. “The software and IT side of it is increasing, as is accountability and management,” he concludes. “Operators can now upgrade their systems with RFI tags etc. to monitor which trucks are being washed and to keep track of all that information electronically. With so much to offer and a proven track record for costeffectiveness and complete customer satisfaction, the future is bright for Clarke Auto Wash Ltd.!

strength since it was established by Tommy Callinan in 1995. The key drivers behind this success have been quality, service, reliability, comfort and economy. Since the word go, Tommy has implemented the highest standards of quality control to ensure that all customers travelling with Callinan Coaches benefit from optimum comfort levels. With a stunning fleet of state-of-the-art vehicles manned by professional, experienced and courteous drivers, Callinan Coaches make sure that every

Regarding the Airport Services accolade, managing director Tommy notes: “We had previously won three Inter City Operator of the Year awards, so it was nice to be recognised in another category now, which shows that we provide a very strong service right across the board.” This has not happened by accident. “Since we started, we have always kept

quality as our top priority,” Tommy continues. “We have shown a lot of other people the way forward – how it could be done and how it should be done.” With depots in Claregalway and the capital, Callinan Coaches holds the City Link / Eireagle non-stop contract for services between Galway city and Dublin Airport as well as a Galway – Cork service and a Galway – Clifden service. Considering that Tommy started out on his own as an owner-driver with one coach, it is quite remarkable to think that Callinan Coaches now generates gainful employment for a team of 130. “I started working with Bus Eireann on their scheduled services and then got the City Link work,” Tommy notes. “I’ve been honoured to have secured work with Bus Eireann on the Ryder Cup as well as providing a Park & Ride service for the Ocean Race and recently for a major construction project in County Kildare. “The majority of our work today is scheduled services for City Link and extended international tours in both Ireland and Britain for CIE.” At the heart of the business is a spectacular, eyecatching fleet, currently comprising 41 coaches and eight city buses. This represents a massive ongoing investment and Tommy keeps his fleet outstandingly fresh, with no fewer than 32 band-new vehicles purchased in the past three years alone! Ten new Van Hool TX16s were purchased in 2015, as well as eleven coaches per year in 2013 and 2014. They all come with two-year bumper-to-bumper warranties and every vehicle in Ireland’s most modern coach fleet is maintained in top-top condition at all times. “A lot of money is invested in ensuring that all the coaches are modern and comfortable. We insist on operating top-quality coaches from both a comfort and operational perspective. Most

aughton & Sons Tyres is a third-generation family business, which has been providing a superb tyre repair, replacement and fitting services across the capital for 48 years. Three members of the Haughton family – Derek and his sons Harry and Adam – are on hand 24/7 to provide mobile call-out services to passenger car and commercial vehicle drivers anywhere in Dublin, providing prompt breakdown and onsite fitting services to owner-drivers and fleet operators alike. A fast, friendly and professional service is guaranteed at a fair price and the wholly customer-focused nature of the business is the main reason why Haughton & Sons is still going strong almost half a century after its inception. When the late Harry Haughton established the company in Summerhill in 1968, it was one of the first independent tyre outlets in Dublin. Since its genesis, Haughton & Sons Tyres has been at the very forefront of the tyre repair and replacement industry, moving with the times as trends and technology changed – from cross ply tyres to radial to steel-belted radial to run-flats. The Haughtons have kept themselves up to speed on every advancement in the industry and they carry a full
complement of tyres to suit every need, be it for a car or commercial vehicle. From their well-appointed base in Dublin 11, with convenient access to every major artery in the city, they also provide a range of associated service including tracking and balancing, and batteries. Mobile services are provided either at a customer’s home or workplace (or, indeed, the side of the road if need’s be!), while the comprehensive fleet service provided includes emergency call-outs any time of the day or night. The mobile phones are never switched off. When I caught up with Derek Haughton shortly before Christmas, this was the case. He explained to me that he might have to go on a call-out any minute. Such is the nature of providing one of the most thorough tyre repair / replacement services in Dublin! “My dad initially set the business up on the North Circular Road, where it grew for three decades. After my parents passed away, myself and my sister Colette took over the business and, in 2003, we relocated to the Millennium Business Park, Cappagh Road, Dublin 11., Sadly, Colette passed away ten years ago at the age of 42, so I’m the last surviving member of the original family and today I’m joined by my wife Catherine and sons, Harry and Adam, who are the third generation to work in the business. Wherever they are, we will go there,” Derek promises. “When we were on the North Circular Road, a lot of our customers had yards and offices in and around Dublin Port, but many of them have moved out and there are a lot of industrial units spread all around the city now. Our vans will follow these customers and we go wherever they are, anywhere in Dublin. Because they have spread out so much, we are covering more of the city on a daily basis.” Since this business was founded in 1968, their ethos has been to focus on customer care. “It’s all about providing a prompt service and saving your customers time and money at the end of the day,” says Derek. “It’s not all about price. Ultimately, it’s service that people are looking for and we have always placed service as our top priority. “We have 50 years’ experience and we we are up and down the city every day. With our three mobile units, we can get around the city centre to any location in a matter of minutes. “We are continuously reinvesting in the business to ensure that we can give our customers the most modern and efficient service – and products. We’re here to save people time, money and hassle. It’s a traditional one-outlet family business with a personal touch. I learned from my father and my sons have learned from me. One day, hopefully, they will take over the business and our customers all over Dublin will continue to receive the best tyre service possible.” Before I could point out that this will undoubtedly be the case, Derek’s mobile rang. He made his excuses and rushed off to get another customer back on the road.

he company’s reputation for a professional and responsible approach to waste management has been developed over its 45-year history. It has continually led the way in promoting environmental awareness in Northern Ireland, going back to 1978 when it introduced the first articulated tankers to the province. In 1985, Irish Waste Services designed, built and operated the first articulated high flow jet vac units in the

UK, which are still in operation today. Four years later, it introduced the first underground CCTV and sewer tracing units. In 1995, it opened the North’s first liquid waste treatment facility. More recent milestones have included the development of a bespoke IT management and waste traceability system in 2001, the introduction of a mobile centrifuge decanter system in 2004, the development of an oil recovery plant in 2009 and the design and
installation of a bespoke round gully and street sweeping recycling facility in 2014. Irish Waste Services adheres to the highest industry standards, something that is reflected in its extensive portfolio of licenses, permits and accreditations. These include ISO 9001:2008 – internal quality management, ISO 14001:2004 – environmental management systems and OHSAS 18001:2007 – occupational health and safety. It will manage your waste effectively to maximise the benefits to you and to the environment so that you can concentrate on your core business. The Carryduffheadquartered concern – it also has a treatment facility on 116 Duncrue Road, Belfast and an office in Ballsbridge, Dublin 4 – aims to develop processes and facilities to direct wastes from environmentally irresponsible disposal outlets and focus on waste reduction, recycling, recovery and reuse. invoice and all of the supporting documents, but also a full and complete breakdown of their waste treatment process, how the waste is recycled along with the necessary regulatory codes such as EWC, SIC and R&D. In addition, the system has the flexibility to provide bespoke reporting on data to customers detailing their exact requirements for upload into their own platforms and systems in a seamless manner. The waste management expert’s fleet of blue, white and gold trucks and tankers have long been a familiar sight on Irish roads. They are fitted with second-by-second tracking systems that can not only pinpoint the location of a vehicle, but can also monitor any unauthorised stoppages, any excessive acceleration and braking, the volume of fuel used and the time the vehicle arrived and left the customer’s site. In keeping with its Duty of Care policy and environmental promise, Irish Waste ensures that the maximum amounts of waste received at its facility are processed there. This provides customers with the comfort and knowledge that their wastes have been processed and treated, and not transferred on to alternate plants and facilities. This in turn ensures that customer requirements under the Waste Duty of Care regulations have been met, and the waste has been delivered to the grave. Irish Waste places great emphasis on ensuring any waste
produced at its treatment facility is recovered, reused or recycled prior to final disposal. Final waste disposal facilities used by the company are rigorously audited to ensure they are licensed and process the waste in an environmentally safe manner. Irish Waste’s treatment facility retains complete traceability for all waste streams received, processed and disposed of.

Fiat offers a wonderful range of commercial vehicles
Fiat on the ground As Ireland’s premier supplier of motorhomes, Donegal-based Donaghey Motorhomes has been established as a Fiat Professional Service Centre for the past five years. So taking on the Fiat light commercial vehicle franchise hardly constitutes a venture into the unknown! We travelled to their well-appointed Letterkenny base and caught up with salesperson Gerry Doherty to find out more.
H
aving serviced and worked closely with the Fiat marque for a decade and a half, attaining Professional Service Centre status, it would be fair to assert that the team at Donaghey Motorhomes have more than served their Fiat apprenticeships. Being appointed main Fiat light commercial vehicle dealer has been a seamless transition and the country’s No.1 motorhomes supplier has hit the ground
running as an official outlet for Fiat vans across Donegal. Commenting on the new franchise, salesperson Gerry Doherty confirms that these are exciting times for the business: “We’re over the moon. Having been a Fiat Professional Service Centre for many years through the motorhomes side of things, we decided to give this a go. 99% of motorhomes are built on Fiat Ducatos, so we are more than familiar
with that set-up. “We were already servicing Fiat vans, including fleet work for the likes of eir etc., so it’s definitely an area we’re very familiar with and very comfortable with. We’ve been servicing Fiat vans since we started up 15 years ago so I suppose becoming a main dealer was a logical progression.” At the time of writing, the dealership was only in its infancy. But, already the Donaghey Motorhomes is Ireland’s newest Fiat commercial vehicle franchise
Donaghey’s have been a Fiat Professional Service Centre for five years

signs were very encouraging. “The vans started arriving in the showroom in November, 2015 and we’ve had a good response so far,” notes Gerry. “We’re only really putting our toes in the water at the minute. Fiat vans have never been up in this part of the country before, so it’s something new for the public to consider. It’s mainly Citroen and Peugeot vans, and some Volkswagens, that have been available in Donegal in the past, so we’re now giving people an excellent alternative to those.” As well as getting a high-quality vehicle, customers can also rest assured that they will receive an outstanding service from a company that has built its reputation on remarkably high service IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS
levels: “Michael Donaghey [company founder and proprietor] has earned a great reputation nationwide for service and aftersales and that’s certainly an area we’ll be focussing on. This has always been a very service-orientated business and we’ll be bringing that to the Fiat van franchise. “If we could manage to get 60-70 new vans sold this year, we’d be very happy with that. We could then go from strength to strength. Once people start to realise how good the Fiat vans are and how strong our service levels are, then things should take off. We’re confident this dealership will be a success, it’s really just a question of how long it takes to get it off the ground.”
With the Ducato, Scudo, Doblò and Fiorino – each available in a number of variations - the flexible and highlyspecced Fiat commercial range has something to suit every need. “Everything is covered, from small vans to large ones. For example, the Ducato XLWB (extra-long wheelbase) with H3 roof has an exceptional payload and is so spacious it can carry an American style fridge freezer standing up.” As a Fiat driver himself, Gerry is in a good position to outline the manufacturer’s commercial vehicles strengths: “First of all, they are very carlike to drive, with very light steering and clutching in the 130, 150 or 180 brake horsepower engines. So they’re powerful

The new Fiat commercial van dealership in Letterkenny is going well
Fiat vans are famously car-like to drive
and a pleasure to drive, while fuel consumption is amazing, with massive savings to be made on diesel bills. “They’re very reliable, very comfortable and very modern – they were the first to put the gear stick on the dashboard and the handbrake on the right hand side of the driver’s seat. You get a powerful, smooth and economical drive with a limitless amount of options available. “As safety is very important to us and one of our primary concerns is the safety of our customers on the road, we will have steering-wheel controls and Bluetooth on every model we sell. “In short, it’s a very, very good product. I’ve been all over Europe in an automatic Ducato camper van and I have to say it’s truly something to behold.” Likewise, the service offered by Donaghey Motorhomes: “Aftersales are second to none here and that’s our big selling point,” Gerry reiterates. “If we can get the same thing going with the vans as we have done with the motorhomes over the past 15 years, that would be a big success. But our expectations are modest. We’re going to just be patient and see what people’s needs are. We’re bringing potential customers in and asking them what their needs are and then finding them the right product. Nobody will be rushed or pressurised. We’re happy to sit down with customers for as IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS
long as necessary or as often as necessary to see what their exact requirements are in order to find them the best van to suit their needs. We’ll see what the van man wants and take it from there. “It’s all about customer care and looking after people.” Donaghey Motorhomes is the largest motorhome dealer in Ireland, supplying new and used Dethleffs, Knaus, Swift, Hymer and Carado models. Many years have been spent building this specialist business into what it is today. All motorhomes are thoroughly inspected prior to delivery and all carry a comprehensive warranty. Fully trained and experienced motorhome technicians are on hand, operating from a modern, purpose-built workshop to meet all servicing and repair requirements. The success of the business is all down to the enthusiasm and hard work of founder Michael Donaghey, who built it up from scratch. “He started from his home and moved into these premises on the Main Road in Letterkenny twelve years ago. He came through the recession and things are now on the up again – the van dealership is another string to the bow. “There has been a big upturn in the motorhomes side of things since September 2014, with people starting to gain confidence in the economy again. We are the largest stockist of motorhomes in Ireland, with over 100 in stock at any given time between new and pre-loved. “We concentrate on German-type motorhomes, which are sold with the guarantee of a superb back-up service. We sold 270 last year, with customers coming from every part of Ireland – Cork, Kerry, Dublin etc. – as well as from England and Scotland. It’s going well and – with the Fiat van franchise up and running – we’re confident that there are even better times ahead.”

Mar-Train have been involved in many specialised jobs like this one
One of a kind H
ere are many different types of haulage, each of which have their own specialised area, with drivers needing different skillsets to carry out their duties to the best of their abilities.
eavy haulage is one of the most skilled areas of haulage as attention to detail, health and safety and concentration levels are paramount in order to ensure a load reaches its destination. To carry out this type of work a top of the range fleet of trucks and trailers are needed to see the job through. To this end, not many can rival heavy haulage company Mar-Train Heavy Haulage Ltd, who have set high standards for the type of haulage. In recent years, Mar-Train have become the first heavy haulage company to have bases both in the north and south of Ireland.

Their Northern base being established in 1979 by Sammy Martin, while two years ago, a depot was opened on the Docks Road in Limerick under the business name of Mar-Train Heavy Haulage Ireland Ltd. They provide their services throughout Ireland, the UK and Europe. Sammy’s son Tim and his wife Sonya have looked after the day to day running of the business for over 20 years now and they have continued the ethos of the elder Martin for hard work and customer satisfaction, which has stood them in good stead over the years. This year was another first for the
company as they became the first haulage firm in Ireland to own the new Mercedes Benz Actros SLT. The SLT is larger, longer, tougher and stronger that any of its predecessors. It is an 8x4 tractor unit which has been systematically designed and built for heavy haulage enabling it to carry up to 250 tonnes. This new model has set new benchmarks in comfort, vehicle performance and flexibility and it brings heavy haulage into a new dimension, while the cab alone delivers the living and working comfort needed by heavy haulage drivers.

Pulling loads for their biggest customer, the McAvoy Group
“We are delighted with the new truck. It is an Actros SLT 4163 GigaSpace 8x4 tractor unit which has the Style-Line interior design equipped with driver and co-driver ventilated suspension seats, auxiliary hot water heater, luxury bed top and bottom and leather steering wheel,” said Tim. “Our drivers are away for weeks at a time so it is essential for them to have their comfort as the trucks are their ‘homes.’’ Mar-Train operate a fleet of 22 trucks between their two depots with Scania, Volvo, Mercedes and DAF making up the fleet. “We also have an extensive range of trailers. The majority of our semitrailers are Andover and Broshuis Trailers and we actually have a brand new Andover arriving shortly. We were the first company in Northern Ireland to operate modular equipment and after continual investment we now boast 30 axle lines, clamp sets, vessel bridges and beam trailers.’ The company has maintained and indeed extended its customer base over the years with the latest addition to the client list being the McAvoy Group. “Business is going well and we’ve grown year on year. However, in saying that, each year is a challenge with the continued increase in overheads. Fortunately we have managed to expand our customer base.’’ “A lot of planning goes into the transport of heavy equipment and abnormal loads. We have a great experienced team to look after every aspect of the business from the traffic and accounts staff, drivers, to steersmen and in house mechanics. The drivers we have are very experienced and they are excellent at what they do. You know that when they head off with a load, it will get to its destination on time.” There is a great emphasis placed on maintenance and ensuring that the fleet is kept in pristine condition at all times. “Reliability is a key factor in this industry and we operate a tight maintenance schedule for all vehicles and try to maintain a young fleet by changing them regularly.’’ Carrying such extreme loads means that a great deal of attention has to be given to the health and safety of not only the drivers but other road users and the load itself. “We would be very pro-active when it comes to health and safety. Each project dictates bespoke risk assessments and method statements. We are continually updating our systems to ensure compliance with all the Health and safety regulations. We are members of the The Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) which is an accreditation scheme that aims to improve fleet activity throughout the UK and beyond.” IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS
The company specialises in heavy haulage
Tim added that no two jobs were the same, so different approaches have to be taken for each of them. “I suppose in one respect it never gets repetitive as all jobs are generally different. Our goal is to make sure the customer is satisfied with what we are doing and so far we seem to be doing that. Hopefully we can continue to do so for many years to come.” Best Wishes To Mar-Train Heavy Haulage, From

hen the recession hit Ireland, the construction industry took the full brunt, but this was followed closely by the haulage industry which suffered greatly also. So to start a haulage business in 2014 shows that G Quinn International Transport Ltd have the determination, guile and expertise to get a business up and running. Despite being regarded as a fledgling company, the team at the Donegal based company have many years’ experience in the haulage industry and this has seen a rapid rise in their stature as a reputable transport company. Transport Manager Paul Sinclair spoke to Irish Trucker about the success of the business over the last two years, while he also gave an insight into the services provided. “We draw on the combined years of experience of all the staff members who have a background from all corners of the logistics and transport industry. A wide range of experience is what gives us the edge and it has helped us get up and running. “Gerry had contacts in the industry and that helped get the business going. We specialise in refrigerated and dry goods and our customer base has grown considerably since the company was established.” Paul revealed that the company was actively seeking new work and are always looking to expand the business. “We are continuously looking for new business. We are confident that with the

isn’t affected as we only use genuine parts. Our mechanics are on first-name terms with most of our customers, who are happy to place their trust in us. As part of AutoMester, we are able to promote ourselves as a real alternative to the main dealers without the big bill.” Autowise was the first Irish garage to join the AutoMester revolution in May 2013. Offering the best maintenance and repairs of all makes of cars and vans, AutoMester is the brand name of the first full service garage concept in Ireland and is fast becoming the standard bearer for all independent repairers in the Irish market. The brand appeals to top independent service and repair garages that want to join a high-quality network of like-minded garages. AutoMester members have exclusive branding and also one of the most comprehensive support networks available today for independent garages in Europe. AutoMester garages are fully equipped to work on all makes of cars; boast fully trained mechanics who are regularly trained in certified courses; only use high quality OE spare parts; are diagnostic experts; provide a professional and friendly service; offer great value and up-to-date technical information; provide local services and nationwide coverage. In addition, there is an AutoMester Rewards Club which is exclusive to AutoMester customers. AutoMester is a full service European garage concept that was formed in Denmark in 1993 and expanded to Norway two years later. It is now the biggest and most prominent garage network in Denmark with over 450 members. With a further 170 members in Norway, the network’s experience and know-how supports the concept here in Ireland. Only garages with the best quality workmanship can be part of AutoMester. Maintaining and improving skill levels is an important part of the network’s philosophy. AutoMester members must pass strict entry criteria and be capable of maintaining the high standards of the concept by completing certified practical technical training courses. Regular inspections are part of the quality standard. You can have confidence that your car will be worked on by fully trained professional mechanics that can successfully carry out any repair needed to your car. You will receive expert advice, reduced diagnostic time when there’s a problem and guaranteed quality workmanship when your vehicle is being worked on. By storing comprehensive service history on all customer vehicles, every customer is provided with a detailed invoice listing of all work carried out and parts used, giving you peace of mind when it comes to manufacturer’s warranty. Top award for Furey’s of Sligo

Last year ended on a high for Furey’s of Sligo when the family-run concern was named Coach Operator of the Year (Less than 10 Vehicles) at the Fleet Bus & Coach Awards in Clontarf Castle.
rom humble beginnings in 1972, Furey’s Coaches has grown to become one of Ireland’s leading private coach hire operators. The award is recognition of the company’s unrivalled commitment to customer service and maintaining a modern fleet of coaches, which are a familiar sight on Irish roads. “We were finalists before, but this was our first time to win the Coach Operator of the Year award. It reflects well on our excellent staff who deliver a very high standard of service and on our modern, reliable and comfortable fleet,” says Aidan Furey, who works with his father

Based in Drumcliffe – the resting place of WB Yeats – the company has since gone from strength to strength by expanding its range of buses and services. The 10-strong fleet consists of a mixture of small, mid-size, large buses and coaches. In April, the Furey’s will take delivery of a brand new Volvo Tri Axle 53-seat executive coach. “We pride ourselves on having one of the most modern and safest fleet of buses and coaches in the country,” Aidan explains. “In the past three years, we’ve invested in two new Volvo 53-seat and two Mercedes 28 and 19-seat buses. We like to keep them fresh to ensure the cost of maintenance is kept to a minimum and that our passengers are guaranteed utmost comfort for every trip.” The company’s executive coaches offer air conditioning, WiFi, fridges, tables, DVD and WC facilities as well as comfortable reclining seats with ample leg room. All in all, a client-focussed, compliant, thorough, comprehensive and friendly service ensures that customers – and their vehicles - are looked after as a matter of absolute priority. The imminent addition of tachograph calibration and vehicle plating services to complement the LGV and HGV testing means Wicklow VTN is now a one-stop testing and calibration shop operating to the highest international standards in accordance with the Road Safety Authority, which now governs the CVRT (Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Testing) network. Wicklow VTN opened its doors in a new purpose-built facility in 2010, having operated as Whitegate Service Station & Test Centre for many years prior to that. General manager Tara Jackson notes: “We provide full light and heavy CVRT testing and we started tachograph training in February. That service will be introduced in March, along with plating.

future, especially now that we have expanded the range of services. As it’ll effectively be a one-stop shop for testing, tachographs and plating, we are confident that we’ll be able to bring in a good bit of additional fleet work this year.” The state-of-the-art facility comprises all the latest, RSAapproved testing equipment, with two bays working simultaneously side by side, one dedicated to LGVs and the other focusing on HGVs. “Even though the test centre is open from 8.30 until 5, we can come in earlier if that’s when a customer needs to have the vehicle tested. “We appreciate that many of these operators can’t afford to be off the road during the day and everything is geared towards ensuring that downtime is kept to a minimum. So we are very flexible depending on our customers and a number of regular customers do tend to come in at different times than the official opening hours.” Of course, the latest testing equipment is of little use without the right men to operate it. To this end, Wicklow VTN employs top-class staff. “We have four testers here - three of them do both light and heavy testing while one specialises in light testing exclusively.” Due to the mandatory nature of the CVRT, there is always strong demand for the annual tests. Having said that, it is a competitive market and a test centre will only thrive if a quality service is provided. Tara is pleased to report that things are going well at Wicklow VTN: “It’s picking up. It was slow enough after Christmas but then it got going again and there has been a steady demand so far this year. “We have a very good reputation within the industry and people seem to recognise that. All of our testers are very experienced, professional and well-respected. We work handin-hand with our customers and do whatever we can to be as helpful and co-operative as we possibly can. “The testers go by the book and inspect all vehicles properly. If a vehicle fails, they can advise the owner on what needs to be fixed in order to pass the test next time around.” Things couldn’t have gone any better since the RSA took over from the local County Councils to oversee the commercial vehicle testing network. “It was a very smooth and seamless transition and we are very happy with how it worked out,” Tara confirms. As for the future of the Garden County’s premier testing facility, the general manager is optimistic: “Things are certainly improving and moving in the right direction,” she concludes. “We are customer-focussed and our customer service is

second to none. We’re hoping to get a lot more customers in once we’ve started doing the tachographs as well. “We strive to make everything as convenient and painless as we can for both the owner and the tester and we pride ourselves on having quick turnarounds. Everything is going well and we couldn’t be happier.”

changing needs. The wide range of services they provide includes national and international refrigerated service, full load, part load, temperature controlled/ambient, storage and cross docking. While the company retains it strong links with the fish industry, recent years have seen major expansions into other temperature controlled markets. “We specialised in fish export and also imported fruit & veg in the early days,” Pat recalled. “But we have had to diversify from fish. The fish industry has had its fair share of problems, as everyone knows, the same as transport, and we had to cut our cloth accordingly. “We reduced our fleet when the fish quotas came in and we've been fortunate to secure other work along with Gallagher Brothers, they are our main customers and we pride ourselves on the service we provide.” Offering competitive rates, the team at Pat McGowan Transport are dedicated to customer satisfaction. Consequently much of their
business comes from word of mouth and satisfied repeat customers. A vital component of the well-oiled Pat McGowan machine is their highly skilled and competent drivers. “One of the main problems I see in this business is driver availability,” Pat pointed out. “Professionalism in the driving industry takes years of experience.” Attention to detail and a policy of continually updating their fleet also helps Pat McGowan Transport stay a couple of steps ahead of their competitors. “Business seems to be on the up and things are looking good,” Pat added. “Everybody is well aware of the challenges that are out there in getting to B from A. The haulage industry has gone through the worst of times in the last five years. There has been plenty of hardship but, at this point in time, I'd be optimistic about the future.” For more information on Pat McGowan Transport Ltd and the services they provide, give Pat or John a call at the numbers above.

Since its inception in 2012, Celtic Transport Solutions has been a godsend for Irish hauliers on the continent
if required, plus the prompt payment of fines in both France and Spain to allow vehicles to get back on the road asap. From his base in north-west France, just outside Dinan, Jimmy Quinn reflects on the genesis of CTS: “I drove for O’Donovan Transport in Cork, covering Spain for 15 years. I have been living here since September, 1988 and started driving for O’Donovans in ’96. As part of that work, I was handling their breakdowns etc. over here. “In 2012, I decided to set up a company to offer that breakdown service to any Irish drivers coming out to the continent. I opened accounts with all the garages over here and created a network whereby I could offer a great service to Irish hauliers, who now have a man on the ground out here to make sure they were getting looked after in a fair and professional manner. Jimmy soon formed an alliance with Disez Kergoat, a Scania agent in Brittany, a company fronted by Sebastien Danielou, which offers dependable Europe-wide recovery service. I checked out a number of different recovery companies and got quotes from them but Disez IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Kergoat was by far the best and Sebastien is like one of our own. He’s very reasonable and is available 24/7, which is extremely difficult to get in France. “If a driver is broken down anywhere in France or the rest of Europe, we can bring them a replacement truck if required to keep the load on the move and take away the damaged one. We can then repair it over here at our own garage with new or 2nd hand parts or assist the owner in bringing it home to their garage of choice. In 2014, we recovered 14 trucks back to the ports of Cherbourg or Roscoff and last year it was 36 recovered and 438 assistance calls. It really is in the operator’s best interest to deal with us because they could get fleeced here if they don’t go about things properly. When vehicles go into a garage under my account, they are dealt with as French customers and the job is under control as regards, time, cost and clear answers,“We deal directly with the garages in France and the vehicle owner at home in Ireland knows he is being dealt with the same way that a local haulier would be dealt with. In addition to our own team, we have the support of a very extensive and professional national & international network, this allows us to efficiently and without unnecessary delay and costs,

the last three years. We provide a very good service and I’m confident that any of our customers would tell you the same.” “For fines I use Union Truck

The fines in Spain with Lextransport they have the trucks back on the road within 20 minutes, and through the website with Union Truck Service which takes about one hour. There are other ways of paying these fines but this is the quickest and is also very competitivelypriced.” “We have customers from all over Ireland and we are picking up new customers on

a steady basis. We also have some UK and Romanian customers on our books and we deal with breakdowns literally every day.” On the
national road network there is no restrictions for us or the haulier but the motorways are private roads and things can get a bit more complicated. As well as breakdown recovery, replacement vehicles are also provided if required
A full range of mechanical repair and recovery services is provided across France and Spain
82
There are pirates out here operating along the motorways – each of whom has been designated their own sections form motorway companies ASF, AREA, SAPN, SANEF, ATMB etc. and what they charge is simply extortion. For example, up to €900 for the call-out and €800 for the tyre itself. But provided we can get the truck down a slip road and clear the motorway we can do the job for retail price.” So how does one avail of this exceptional service? “There’s an annual subscription fee and it’s just a matter of signing up €150 to a maximum of €530 per year, and €50 per assistance. We try to be as reasonable as possible. Anybody who has a subscription can ring me any time, day or night, and we will get them sorted. Please insist, as we all know what mobiles are like!” Jimmy has an excellent business in place providing a superb service. Going forward, he hopes to expand upon that: “The venture is going pretty well but I can develop it further,” he concludes. “The potential is there for it to get bigger. We provide an extensive range of services and are only too willing to help out. The savings that can be made are enormous, and any Irish haulier covering a route in France or on the continent could do worse than contacting Celtic Transport Solutions.

It’s comfortable, reliable and economical.” “We now have five Volvo, seven DAF, one Scania and one MAN. The fleet is growing all the time.” CBM specialises in the provision of transport of all ADR such as oxidising, toxic, corrosive, acids and alkalis as well as transport of flammables. In addition, the company can handle full loads, groupage loads, part loads and bulk loads. All vehicle movements are satellite-tracked, while constant contact is kept with the fleet’s 14 drivers who, Christy is keen to stress, have played a key role in the company’s growth. “All of our drivers have been with us since the beginning and have contributed greatly to our success through their professionalism and commitment to customer service,” he says. “As safety is paramount when handling dangerous goods such as chemicals and acids, they are fully trained in all aspects of ADR and hold ADR / HazChem training certificates. Since Christy and Mick first started working for Johnston Logistics the relationship between the two parties has gone from strength to strength. “We are proud to have Johnston Logistics as a key account. B
ased in Belleek, County Fermanagh, Maguire Fuels is a family-run business offering a comprehensive fuel supply service. With 20 years’ experience in the industry, they have the capacity and wherewithal to provide a prompt fuel delivery service at a very competitive price. The business was established in 1994 by Peter Maguire, originally to distribute home heating oil and red diesel to customers in Belleek, Garrison, Belcoo and the surrounding areas. In 2008, Peter’s son Colin joined the company and initiated the coal and gas division of the family business. Maguire Fuels provide a solution to all heating needs, whether for domestic, commercial or agricultural use. A friendly, fast and efficient service is provided six days per week and the range of oil, coal and gas is supplied at keen rates, with services available including same-day deliveries of fuel (no order is considered too big or too small!) as well as oil tank replacements, emergency call-outs, oil suction and transfer and a Cash & Carry service. All major payment methods are accepted, including cash, cheque, credit and debit cards, direct debits and Paypoint. The comprehensive range of fuel products supplied includes kerosene home heating oil; red diesel agricultural fuel; a range of house coals, smokeless fuels, peat briquettes and kindling; logs, turf and firelighters; fire grates and fireside accessories; and both butane

and propane gas for cooking and heating. Gas cylinders are available in a range of sizes and can be either collected at Maguire Fuels’ depot or can be delivered to a customer’s doorstep. Throughout its two decades of existence so far, Maguire Fuels has complemented its vast range of products with a level of customer service that is second to none. This is why they are the No.1 port of call for all fuel requirements in beautiful Belleek and its environs. Reflecting on the genesis of the company, Colin Maguire notes: “My father started the business up on September 1st, 1994. He would have saw people starting to install oil burners etc. and spotted a niche in the marketplace for supplying oil to those customers. So he purchased his first tanker and started out as a one-man operation.” While the business has thrived during
the intervening 20 years, it remains a modest operation, providing a personal service within a close-knit local community. “It’s still a small family-run business and we pride ourselves on offering a personal touch,” Colin continues. “Dad is still the main man. He runs the show but he is joined here by myself, my cousin Brian Mullen as well as Brenda Curran. Between the four of us, we keep things ticking over.” Fleet-wise, the Maguires operate two tankers, 7.5 tonne and 13 tonne: one ’07 DAF and one ’08 DAF, one with a 7,000-litre tanker and the other boasting a 5,000-litre tanker. These are complemented by two Toyota Dyna coal delivery trucks. “I spotted a market for coal delivery and started that service six years ago. It has expanded every year since,” Colin states. No stone is left unturned in making sure that the fleet is preserved in pristine condition and optimal working order at all times. To this end, the tankers were refurbished last year and the fleet has just been given a striking new makeover. Referring to the decision to rebrand, Colin explains: “We’ve had two new paint jobs done this summer and changed the whole brand with the inclusion of professional images and logos. We believe that the more professional image will make the right impression and this is very important.” The vehicles look fantastic and certainly play their part in promoting the Maguire Fuels name. “Our main supplier is Beatty Fuels in Ballinamallard, with whom we enjoy a very good long-term relationship. We’re hoping to continue that well into the
87
maguire fuels designed_Layout 1 09/03/2016 16:21 Page 3
future,” Colin adds. All in all, Colin is happy with the current status of the family operation: “It’s steady at the minute,” he confirms. “We’re going well and we are looking forward to whatever the market brings. We have two owner-drivers and we always meet customers face-to-face and never let anybody down, which is vital This is a family-run business and we would be well-known in the area. “We try to keep our overheads as low as possible and to make a living out of providing a really good service. The
customer comes first. We will continue to look after our customers and to provide the best service possible.” Tellingly, there are no plans to expand the business or to get out of their comfort zone. To the contrary, the plan is to look after the existing customer base. “We’d rather keep it local and do it right,” says Colin. “We’d like to look after the locals and that’s what we’ll focus on. As they say, small is beautiful. “We’re busy all year around. During the summer, the farming side picks up and things tend to even themselves out.
DMA TANKER SERVICES
Agriculture is an important part of the local economy and also of our business. “In this line of work, you wouldn’t really have a set finishing hour every day. You have to be flexible and be prepared to work around the clock. There are a lot of hours on the road and in the office but you keep the head down and do your best to provide a service that people can depend on.” This has been the case for 20 years and, one suspects, will continue to be the way with Maguire Fuels for many more years to come.

servicing, maintenance and daily check tasks are carried out. “You have to keep them right and we make sure that every vehicle that goes out on the road is 100%. That’s a minimum requirement - for ourselves, our customers, our drivers and the RSA,” Daryl notes. By providing absolute customer satisfaction at all times, Legnakelly Transport benefits from a high volume of repeat business, which eliminates the need to go out looking for new contracts. Adherence to the highest standards has seen the County Monaghan based company develop long-lasting relationships with prestigious partners like Longfordheadquartered Kiernan Milling – Ireland’s premier supplier of animal feeds – and nearby

Harte Peat, who supply quality casing soil to the mushroomgrowing industry. A twice-weekly Ireland – UK service is also provided. Providing bulk transport solutions nationwide, Legnakelly Transport generates gainful employment for a friendly, diligent crew of six full-time personnel in addition to two parttime workers. This includes aforementioned founders Meredith and Shirley as well as their sons Daryl, Dean and Richard (all three of whom are employed as drivers). Daryl is also a fully-qualified diesel mechanic, who looks after the fleet in the on-site workshop. Very much the archetypal hands-on director, Meredith combines the daily running of the operation with part-time driving. As with any close-knit familyrun enterprise, a personal touch – as well as total transparency is guaranteed at all times and customers have complete peace of mind in that they know exactly who they are dealing with and can rest assured that they’re receiving an optimum service. Of course, a dependable fleet and solid levels of service are the cornerstones upon which any transport company is built and Legnakelly Transport Ltd. certainly will not be found wanting in these departments. With a proven track record of some 27 years behind them, the Moore family can approach the future with justified confidence and optimism. There’s every reason to believe that this operation is here for the long haul! Going forward, very little will change. Daryl concludes: “We have a good fleet and we provide a top-quality service. That’s what it all boils down to, at the end of the day. We’re happy with how things are going, so we’ll concentrate on the business we have and keep plugging away.” If it’s not broken, why fix it?

authorised distributors, all types of coal and fuels are distributed across County Donegal. Although still relatively new, the smokeless fuel manufacturing and distribution departure is proving to be an extremely successful one: “We started from zero two years ago and are up to 20,000 tonnes this year,” says Andrew. “Demand is seasonal, mainly from October through to the end of March, and we are supplying nationwide through resellers, who distribute our fuels to the end user.” On the distribution end of things, regular investment ensures that a fresh, immaculately-maintained fleet provides an unrivalled service. Andrew McLaughlin & Sons / A&N Fuels operate a fleet of 20 trucks, ranging from 15-tonne up to 44tonne, as well as availing of the services of some local haulage companies on a subcontract basis. “We have three artics, all Volvo, and these are fitted with Moffett Mounties so we can deliver anything from half a pallet to a full lorry-load. We’ve just

recently bought a brand-new eight-wheel, tri-axle Volvo Tridem, which has been especially configured to work with Moffett Mounties. “We [A&N Fuels] distribute home heating oil within a 40-mile radius of Buncrana and have five tankers on the road doing that.” Needless to say, Andrew is delighted with how the business has progressed since they opened up the smokeless fuel manufacturing plant two years ago: “It’s
growing all the time and we are hiring new staff,” he states. “This business is changing, we’re expanding rapidly. This is top-quality fuel and is recognised as such. “As we had already been active in the solid fuel business for decades, we saw that things were moving this way and have put a modern production line in place. We’re still doing traditional coals, doubles and slacks etc. as well as a full range of fuels, but things are moving more and more towards smokeless. We will

give our customers whatever they want and all the indications now are that they are looking for high-quality smokeless fuel. The manufacturing plant has given us a new lease of life and we are now focussing on a whole new way of doing things. We are also going to be putting in a new bagging and processing facility in response to the increase in demand.” Between the manufacturing plant, processing, sales and distribution, employment generated directly by the company has risen by eleven in the past twelve months to an impressive team of 60 – not bad for a family business in Buncrana! “We are very proud of where we’re from. There’s a great work ethic in the community here and our staff are excellent.” Although Andrew McLaughlin & Sons never received any grants or Government assistance along the way, Andrew isn’t one to moan: “We’ve had to do it on our own bat, but it has worked out well for us,” he says. “Ultimately, we have the same goals as the Government – they

want to sell smokeless fuel and so do we. We are all on the same side. The fuels we were replacing are all imports so we are reducing imports, reducing the carbon footprint and generating employment. It’s win-win all around. “We are also in the process of developing a lab, which will help us to create new and better products. There is a major shift in the fuel sector in Ireland taking place and it is exciting to be at the forefront of that. The Minister aims to make the entire country a smokeless zone within five years and we are hoping to fill that void. We have the manufacturing plant and the R&D in place and we will continue to push onwards. “At the end of the day, you like to see your customers getting value for money and quality fuels. The price of home heating oil has come down and so have transport costs – diesel and tax – and this is all good news for the customer. Everything we do is tailored towards our customers and we are now in a better position than ever before to provide the best range of products and services.”

The driving force –both literally and figuratively speaking! – behind the operation, Sean Devane established Devane Haulage in 2001. For six years prior to that, he had worked in England, providing haulage solutions on various construction projects. Upon returning to Ireland, he started off with a modest operation and gradually built up his fleet and extended the range of services provided. Initially, subcontract work was secured on the M6 motorway as well as other road construction jobs such as the Portlaoise and Ennis bypasses, the N59, the Casla Water Works Scheme, Mutton Island and Garda HQ in Renard. At the same time, Sean was also offering keen haulage solutions. Meanwhile, the acquisition of the 50-tonne-per-metre crane – mounted on a DAF truck – opened a lot of new doors and saw Devane Haulage secure work both nationally and internationally lifting and transports boats, machinery, containers, offices units etc. Sean even had the distinction of working for the Irish film industry! When a customer is more familiar with a vehicle, they are more relaxed and it is easier for them to learn. “We always keep the fleet fresh and we would have a budget in place every year to maintain the high standard of vehicles we have at our disposal.” Over the last two years, this ever-growing company has increased its workload by 40% and Noel revealed that the aim over the next five years was to double in size from where they are now. “We have a plan in place that was drawn up by our manager John Kearney which would see us double in the next five years. To achieve this, we aim to increase on our attention to detail and work even harder.” In the heavy goods vehicle section, you may wish to obtain a licence in only one of the covered vehicles, or like many of their students, you may choose not to stop until you’ve got your car, rigid and artic truck licence. here is certain legislation needed and rules and regulations to be adhered to in this sector, but that has not stopped some rogue operators from continuing to ply their trade. However, the majority of companies play by the book so to speak, and they are the ones who offer a better service to their customers. One such firm is Down based F McParland & Co Ltd who has been providing a loyal and efficient service to their customers for 55 years now. The company was established in 1960 by Felix McParland whose initial focus was on supplying sand and gravel to the local builders and other customers. This remained the businesses main service for many years, until, they slowly began to diversify into demolition and plant hire. Around 25 years ago, Felix’s son Frankie came on board and has helped bring the company forward ever since. For this month’s edition of Irish Trucker, we profile F McParland & Co Ltd and find out how does a business last so long in such a competitive industry. “My father always said ‘a wee fire will keep you warm, while a big fire will burn the arse off you’ and what he was

referring too was us not getting too big, we are a small enough operation and try to keep the overheads down and I think that is one of the main reasons that we have lasted so long,” said Frankie. As stated the company specialises in site clearance, demolition and plant hire. This involves the hiring of diggers, track machines, rockhammers and tipper lorries all of which come with experienced and skilled drivers. F McParland & Co Ltd also provides clay, topsoil, screened topsoil, crushed stone as well as demolition salvage and site clearance. Based in Newry, this experienced company offer more than their
competitors as not only will they do demolition work, but they have the option of removing all waste from the site to their licensed transfer station if the customer wishes. “We use the sand quarry as a landfill now for all the waste materials. We have our own crushers and screeners that are used on site. We recycle as much stone as possible too. “This is an extra service that helps the customer save some money. When they come to us, they know they don’t have to contact another firm to dispose of the materials as we will do it all in the one package and it saves them all that hassle.” Frankie admitted that they are currently very busy and an ongoing project is the demolition of an old creamery in Armagh where a new Tesco’s will be constructed. “We are very busy. In saying that, we have 12 lads working with us now, compared to 20 a few years back, but we’re happy enough with the workload. The majority of lads have been with us for years and they are very experienced and skilled at what they do. This is a family run business and apart from the lads on site, we have Ann and Denna in the office looking after the administration side of

things.” F McParland & Co Ltd is a professional outfit, and they have all the necessary legislation needed to carry out their duties to the highest standard. “We have all the ISO’s and certificates that we need to run the business properly and there are about eight or ten companies in the north here who would do the same. All these cost money, but you have to have them.” One of the company’s biggest customers is the DOE in Northern Ireland who look after the roads and they have a contract to draw their construction waste, while they would also do work for many of the local authorities in the north. To carry out their duties to the highest standard, Frankie and his team need reliable machinery and this is an area that they pay close attention too. “We would upgrade the machinery every few years and we would do all our own maintenance work. Recently, we purchased a new High Reach Demolition Machine. It is essential to keep the machinery in good working order as you don’t want it breaking down on a job, as it’s not only a bad
