Michelin Tyres deliver the difference for Cosgrave Transport
Family run Cosgrave Transport has adopted a Michelin tyre policy across its fleet of 27 trucks and 75 trailers after the performance of Michelin’s steer axle tyres impressed Managing Director Brian Cosgrave. Prior to switching to Michelin tyres, Limerick-based Cosgrave Transport fitted a range of well-known tyre brands, but found steer tyre wear so aggressive that tyres Brian Cosgrave, had to be turned on the rim every six weeks. In some Cosgrave Transport cases steer tyres supplied as original equipment suffered major shoulder wear after just six weeks in service. When the first 315/80 R 22.5 Michelin XZE2+ test sets were fitted, tyre life rose significantly. The customer turned the Michelin steer tyres on the rim just once during their first life in service and they clocked up an impressive 220,000 km before being regrooved. Brian Cosgrave explains: “Our fleet undertakes a lot of regional work and the deteriorating condition of some of the older roads in Ireland really take their toll. Pronounced cambers and ruts caused by years of trailers operating on super singles were causing terrible premature tyre wear. It was pushing up our running costs and eating into valuable workshop hours. “The difference in performance since we started fitting Michelin replacement tyres has been incredible. We’re getting a very respectful mileage performance from the tyres and roadside downtime is a rare occurrence. As a result, we now fit Michelin products on all axles.” Cosgrave also specifies Michelin tyres as original equipment on new trucks and trailers joining the fleet. “It cost us €750.00 to have 385/65 R 22.5 XTE3 tyres fitted on each of our new Dennison trailers, but it’s worth it. When you consider the total value of ownership we’ll unlock from each of these Michelin casings, it more than covers the additional cost.” Cosgrave Transport operates its own on-site workshop where staff inflate tyres to bespoke pressures defined by Michelin for each vehicle type. The workshop team also ensure tyres follow Michelin’s multiple lives policy, with the new X MultiWay 3D XZEs fitted on the steer axle, X MultiWay 3D XDE Remix tyres on the drive axle and Encore remoulds on trailers. Tyres are supplied by local dealer Mid-West Tyres, which also collect old casings and return them to Michelin for the Remix and Encore remanufacturing processes. “This is another area where Michelin adds value,” explains Cosgrave, “as some manufacturers don’t want their old tyres back, and just want to sell new rubber. Michelin is always keen to receive our casings – just as we are keen to receive the credits in our casing bank!” Established in 1978, Cosgrave Transport specialises in container transport using a fleet of container chassis and sliding skeletal trailers. Operating from Annacotty Business Park, Limerick; North Esk, Cork and Ballycoolin, Dublin 15, the fleet is fitted with satellite tracking and services all Irish and major European ports.
IRHA fear job losses
The Irish Road Haulage Association is concerned that jobs in the transport industry may be lost due to the UK’s introduction of a road levy. Irish hauliers must pay a road levy if they intend using roads in Northern Ireland and Britain since April 1st. The levy applies to all non-UK registered vehicles and this includes Irish hauliers, some of who do travel across the border on a daily basis. However, despite protestations, the levy will be implemented and failure to pay the levy carries a fixed penalty of £300 or a maximum fine of £5,000 if it goes to court. All lorries weighing more than 12 tonnes will be charged the new levy, which will be capped at £1,000 a year and is intended to level the playing field for British truck drivers who have to pay tolls and levies when driving in Europe. The IRHA been called for the Irish Government to seek an exemption for them on the new levy, which was recently introduced in the UK. Alternatively, they want the money they spend on the charge to be refunded. Eoin Gavin of the Irish Road Haulage Association said: “We are now waiting on the Assembly in Northern Ireland to make a stand on it." Two roads in Northern Ireland are exempt from the levy, because they straddle both sides of the Irish border. They include part of the A3, west of Clones, Co Monaghan and the A37, which is a main through route between Dundalk in Co Louth and Castleblayney in Co Monaghan.

NTA calls for Dublin city congestion charge
If the National Transport Authority has its way, drivers entering Dublin will soon have to pay congestion charges. The NTA claims that motorists should be made pay a congestion charge - like in London - to ease traffic chaos in the city at peak times. It argues that unless a road usage charge is introduced before 2020, the Government will be unable to meet its stated target of reducing car commuting levels to 45% of all journeys. At present, 36% of journeys into the city centre are made by car. London has a £10 daily congestion charge in place for driving a vehicle within designated zones at particular times. In December 2012, Transport Minister Leo Varadkar rejected the NTA’s proposal to introduce such charges and a spokesman representing him stated over the weekend that his position on the matter had not changed. But the NTA is insisting that “some form of road usage charging” is the only measure that can tackle the gridlock and argues that the situation is set to get much worse. The proposal is contained within the Authority’s transport strategy for the next two decades, entitled ‘2030 Vision’.

Dixon International chooses Michelin X Line Energy Tyres
6
Award-winning haulier Dixon International is switching to Michelin X Line Energy tyres across its fleet, after a successful trial showed it could slash fuel use by more than five per cent. The firm conducted a six month trial on six tractor units, three using Michelin 315/70 R 22.5 X Line Energy tyres, the others using the fleet’s existing premium tyre bran fitment. Tested on long-distance, high-speed European routes in keeping with Dixon International’s typical operations, the Michelin-fitted tractors averaged a 5.2 per cent saving in fuel. This saving was so significant that the company has switched immediately to Dixon chooses Michelin X a full Michelin replacement policy, as well as specifying them as original equipment on new trucks and trailers. Michelin X Line Energy tyres have already been factory fitted to 20 new Volvo FH tractors, entering service as part of the firm’s fleet of 110 trucks and 170 trailers. Michael Dixon, Dixon International Director, says that the projected savings from fitting Michelin’s latest generation of fuelsaving tyres will be substantial. He says: “We use around 500,000 litres of fuel a month, and based on the results of the tests, we could save more than 300,000 litres a year once the whole fleet has converted to Michelin. The cost of that fuel saving would be more than our yearly tyre bill. So by changing to Michelin, we’re effectively getting free tyres.” Dixon also plans to fit X Line Energy tyres to trailers within the fleet. “We are awaiting delivery of 30 new Schmitz Cargobull trailers arriving on X Line Energy tyres, so we hope to see even greater savings once the whole truck and trailer combination is operating on Michelin’s fuel-saving tyres,” he says. Michelin X Line Energy tyres are among the most fuel efficient on the market and are designed for long distance operations on motorways and major trunk roads, making them perfect for international hauliers concerned with getting greater fuel economy. Tyres are being supplied by local independent Michelin Truck Professional dealer A One Tyres, which provides a convenient drop-off service, enabling Dixon International’s own technicians to fit replacement tyres as and when required. The in-house technicians also plan to regroove the X Line Energy tyres once the tread depth reaches between 3-4mm, extending the life of the Michelin tyres by approximately 25 per cent. Dixon adds: “We’ve only just started using the new tyres, but our drivers respect Michelin as one of the top brands. We hope to replicate the savings from the trial across our fleet, as that will help us continue to strengthen our position as the market leader.” Established in 1979, Dixon International is a family run business specialising in temperature controlled logistics serving the life science and food sector for national and international haulage throughout Europe. Operating from Swords Business Park, Swords, County Dublin, the firm has a fleet of more than 100 trucks – predominantly Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, Daf and Scania tractors hauling a range of trailers including reefers, Euroliners, box vans, skeletals and tankers. Dixon International was awarded International Haulier of the Year three years in a row in 2012, 2013 and 2014, plus voted overall Irish Haulier of the Year 2014 at the Fleet Transport Awards. Kerr’s Tyres Sign Five Year Deal With Montgomery Transport Group
Kerr’s Tyres is pleased to announce a significant five year deal with the Montgomery Transport Group. The deal, which is estimated to deliver five figure savings over the duration of the contract, will see Kerr’s Tyres supply tyres and provide tyre maintenance, under an innovative Pence Per Kilometre (PPK) contract. The contract will initially involve several companies within the Montgomery Transport Group including Montgomery Transport, Montgomery Distribution, Montgomery Tank Services and Montgomery Refrigeration. PPK tyre contracts can bring many benefits to the Haulage industry. The peace of mind that there will be no unexpected spikes in tyre costs across the term of the contract is a huge benefit for any haulier running a medium to large fleet, however, the benefits don’t just stop there. In addition to the cost of tyre purchase, the loss of productivity from a vehicle being off the road due to tyre malfunction can have a detrimental effect on the overall profitability of a load. The introduction of preventative maintenance by Kerr’s Tyres, as part of the PPK contract, will proactively manage Montgomery’s tyre stock across the fleet and help to drive down the number of breakdowns, reduce the health & safety implications of a driver at the side of a road, increase driver productivity and improve overall load profitability. “Every customer is different and it is our job to understand their differing requirements and tailor the right package to suit them”, said Norman Kerr from Kerr’s Tyres, “Having worked with Montgomery’s for many years, we feel we are well positioned to provide the right level of service for the Group and are pleased Neil Kirkpatrick, they have awarded Kerr’s Tyres this Fleet Inspector, prestigious PPK contract.” Kerr’s Tyres. Best quarter for car sales since 2008
Figures just released by the SIMI (Society of the Irish Motor Industry) for vehicle sales for the first quarter of this year show that new car sales are up by 26% on last year. At almost 50,000 cars sold, the first quarter of this year has outperformed all other periods since 2008. Sales in March are up 23%, reflecting a continuation of the consumer confidence that has been apparent since the start of the year. The Commercial Vehicle market is also positive, with light commercial/van sales up 43% this quarter and up 45% in March alone. Heavy commercial/truck sales are up 40% so far this year and 31% in March alone. Alan Nolan, SIMI Director General: "Vehicle sales for the first quarter of 2014 remain significantly ahead of last year. Already we have registered over two thirds of total car sales for last year. We are clearly starting from a low base but the most notable point has been the return of retail consumers to the marketplace and that can be seen both in showrooms and in the number of 141 cars visible outside homes, schools and shops. This has been significantly assisted by the improved availability of retail finance from the Finance Houses who are strongly supporting the recovery in the market."

Finbarr Cleary, President of CILT Ireland told 450 delegates at the ceremony in Dublin: “The Awards identify individuals and organisations within our industry whose performance has been outstanding and who are providing leadership within the Industry.” The award was accepted by Shell’s Brendan Moyles who paid tribute to all the transport contractors for their unrelenting commitment to safety and high standards of delivery. “This award could not have been won without the commitment and professionalism as well as the determination of all individual drivers to be best in class for road user behaviour” , he said.
If the wheels come off! - Willis Insurance and Risk
Management Client Director Robert Caldwell highlights the importance of having the right cover when things go wrong. With over thirty years of experience in the transportation and haulage sector, Robert Caldwell understands that whilst competitive terms are always a priority, clients also demand a high level of fast no-nonsense service. This is particularly relevant when an incident occurs and the business operation is interrupted. A company’s fleet of vehicles represents a substantial investment in capital, involves significant management time to operate and accounts for a large proportion of the risk a company carries. Driving is one of the most dangerous work activities undertaken and accidents can have serious implications for the company ranging from serious or fatal injuries to employees and third parties to property damage, loss of vehicle use, delays associated with repairs, missed deliveries and loss of reputation. Having the correct insurance programme is essential to cover these and other risks and to provide company operators with peace of mind so that in the event of accidents occurring, businesses can continue to trade effectively without having unnecessary costs or distractions from normal operations.
Willis Insurance & Risk Management Client Director Robert Caldwell

DAF MultiSupport now includes proven telematics solution - and it’s free to new R&M customers
As an integral part of all new DAF Repair and Maintenance contracts, DAF Trucks is to offer to its customers a unique but fully proven telematics solution at no additional cost. The system will be pre-installed on new trucks and it has been specifically tailored for DAF by industry leader and transport management specialist Microlise. The new system will be fully integrated within DAF’s MultiSupport Repair & Maintenance (R&M) packages to help pre-empt problems and provide preventative maintenance, all designed to maximise uptime and truck availability. Importantly the proven Microlise platform will enable operators to easily specify their own customised packages to enhance their logistics management, all of which can be priced New Euro 6 SAF XF separately. The new system will be fitted on all DAF trucks bought with R&M packages - so that’s 35% of all new DAFs sold and 100% of all new DAF tractors. Operators will get a weekly fleet summary report for their vehicles, and they will be able to upgrade to access live data for their fleet, including being able to track and trace vehicles and monitor driving style and fleet utilisation, via a dedicated web portal and a comprehensive suite of reports. It will also be possible to specify the telematics system for DAF vehicles that are not maintained through a DAF MultiSupport contract. This can even include older vehicles and is available for other brands too, something that many operators need to give them visibility across their fleet. “We decided to work with Microlise since their system is fully proven and already in use with some of our customers. The experts at Microlise have been able to specifically tailor the system’s usability in a unique way for DAF customers while retaining its capability to handle a vast range of additional logistics tools”, says Phil Moon, DAF’s UK Marketing Manager. “Our aim has been to provide a tool which enables easy analysis of essential data about the vehicle and its operation from a maintenance and fuel consumption perspective while allowing operators to add tailor made packages to assist their own individual requirements and thus enhance overall fleet efficiency”, said Mr Moon. A key benefit of the technology is to provide insights into driver behaviour, enabling operators to better understand how safely and economically their vehicles are being driven. This information can be used to put in place driver training programmes, where required, as well as fully analysing vehicle fuel consumption under all operational conditions. Coupled with the ability to spot developing vehicle issues which may require attention before becoming mission critical, the system has the potential to transform vehicle fleet management.

Ireland’s top Transport Managers trained in Donegal
The Swilly Group is now recruiting for the next Transport Managers’ CPC course which begins on Monday April 14th 2014. The Transport Managers CPC is a qualification required by persons managing a passenger or freight transport company.
Donegal’s leading transport training company, continues to lead the way nationally with their learners achieving national awards on the Transport Managers CPC course. The Swilly Group has achieved an the highest first time pass rates nationally over the last number of years. Exams are held each year in January, June and September. Since 2011, learners on the Swilly Group Transport Manages Course have collected the award for the highest marks in Ireland in the CPC exams. Continuing this trend into 2014, three Swilly Group Students have achieved the highest marks nationally in the Haulage and Passenger transport exams. Brian O’Donnell of Feda O’Donnell Coaches in Ranafast achieved the highest score nationally in 2013 and received an award from the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport in Dublin at the Irish Logistics & Transport Awards on 20th Brian O’Donnell, (Centre) of Feda O’Donnell Coaches, Donegal, receives his Irish Logistics & Transport Award at the recent ILTA ceremony in the March 2014. That completes a hat trick for the Swilly Hilton Double Tree Hotel, Ballsbridge, Dublin for scoring the highest Group and Donegal. marks in Ireland in 2013 in the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport (CILT) Transport Manager CPC exams. Brian studied for the course with “We have been delighted with the results our learners the Swilly Group in Letterkenny. Brian is accompanied by his father, have been achieving”, said Brian Sweeney, Managing mother, wife and Damian Kerin of Swilly Group. Director of the Swilly Group. “The quality of training that we provide has been second to none and the results our students have achieved has shown this”. “This is primarily due to the diligent work and the endless hours of tuition our CPC tutors provide”. Brian says, “With other training providers the learners receive the minimum amount of classroom tuition and left to study themselves”. “On the Swilly Group course we provide the learners with whatever amount of classroom tuition they need”. Any licensed Haulier or Bus Operator must hold, or employ someone who holds, the Transport Manager CPC qualification. With the RSA now responsible for policing of commercial haulage and bus operations and many prosecutions now going through the courts, it has become vital that companies, not alone remain compliant, but also that they have staff who are up to date on the most current legislation. Also, with the implementation of a Diesel Fuel Rebate in Ireland since July 2013 for compliant bus and lorry operators, the demand for suitably qualified Transport Managers is growing. The next Transport Manager CPC course is scheduled to start in Letterkenny on Monday 14th April with the CILT exams scheduled for Friday 6th June 2014 in Letterkenny.
New legislation could see employers’ breath test employees
Road hauliers have reacted angrily to the news that the Government is considering introducing legislation that lets them carry out sobriety tests on drivers. The Department of Transport insisted the matter is only at its formative stages at this point, though it is believed the Medical Bureau for Road Safety is heading up a working group on the proposal. Road hauliers have condemned the plans which, if enacted, would be likely to mean the employer would face legal sanction, as well as the driver, for any breaches of driving or drug-driving legislation. “Enabling legislation is being considered which would compel employers of drivers to conduct tests for alcohol or drugs,” a spokesman for the Department of Transport confirmed. “This would apply primarily to drivers of commercial vehicles and public services vehicles. This proposal is at a very early stage of consideration. Consultation with relevant agencies, including the Health and Safety Authority, will be necessary before the proposal is developed further.”
Boost for Irish exports
Irish exports have increased by 3% during the month of February compared to the same period last year. Figures released by the Central Statistics Office show that there was an increase as the value of exports reached €6.79bn during the month, according to the figures, up €168m on February of last year. One of the main drivers of export growth during the month was in the food and live animal sector, which saw export value rise 15% year-on-year to stand at €710m. Meanwhile the value of imports rose on an annual basis, up 2.8% to just above €4bn. Overall this led to a slight widening in the trade surplus, which stood 2.2% higher at €2.77bn in February.

Cork Boat Club Signs MOU with Cork’s Emergency Services
Recognising the need for adequate and safe launching facilities in the upper river area for agencies responding to emergencies and river searches, a jointly funded project by Port of Cork and Cork City Council ensuring Cork Boat Club’s eastern slipway is operational and fit for purpose, has been completed. As a result of this project and to ensure continual sharing of the facilities, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Cork Boat Club, Port of Cork, Cork City Fire Brigade and Cork City Civil Defence was signed today. Cork Boat Club has for many years allowed the Emergency Services access to its grounds and slipway. Sharing of access to the sole operational slip at times however, caused congestion between Cork Boat Club's day-to-day launch, recovery operations and the needs of the local Emergency Service. Cork Boat Club agreed to provide 24/7 access to the Emergency Services and Port of Cork, and any other agencies under their control, when responding to an emergency situation or conducting training, while Port of Cork and Cork City Council agreed to jointly fund the repair of Cork Boat Club’s second slipway to ease launching congestion at peak times. According to the Port of Cork Harbour Master, Captain Paul O’Regan, this MOU is a positive step for all parties involved. He said: “We were very pleased to be a part of the project, which demonstrates the close working relationship between the City Council and the Port Company. The MOU agreed between the parties will provide a valuable resource for all involved. Cork Boat Club already facilitates boat storage for Blackrock Coastal Rowing Club and this agreement is a further example of their community focus” Captain O ‘Regan continued: “This arrangement will operate on a goodwill basis for the benefit of the community at large and will greatly assist the emergency services, which are very often faced with challenging search and recovery tasks.” Cork Boat Club Chairman John McCarthy added: “This arrangement is in line with our deeply held community based ethos and is a win-win for all parties. Cork Boat Club has had tremendous success both on and off the water in recent years, and this is another significant step in the right direction.” On behalf of Cork City Fire Brigade, the MOU was welcomed by Chief Fire Officer, Mr John Ryan. All parties in this Memorandum of Understanding will meet formally on an annual basis to review its operation and to ensure that any associated issues are managed. Cork Boat Club in Blackrock Village was established in 1899 and has 200 members. In 2013 it had the distinction of having fourteen of its rowers selected to represent Ireland at International level, the highest level of international representation of any club in the country.
Komatsu qualified used equipment scheme launched
Komatsu has unveiled details of their new Komatsu Qualified Used Equipment scheme, described by their distributor in Ireland, McHale Plant Sales of Birdhill, as a ‘remarketing initiative’ that recognises the importance of the used equipment sector as a seed bed out of which future new machinery sales will be generated. Being introduced by Komatsu Europe, the scheme is designed to deliver peace of mind to used equipment buyers by ensuring that pre-owned Komatsu equipment meets the latest and highest standards of quality, value, reliability and fuel efficiency before being offered for sale.
10-Stage Plan Following a 10-stage quality service plan set down by Komatsu, all pre-owned equipment selected by McHale Plant Sales for sale under the scheme must pass a stringent inspection and evaluation process to be carried out by their Komatsu certified engineers. In this, detailed information about the operating history of each machine will be fully checked against available Komatsu Komtrax data and service records. All work equipment will be cleaned and greased and any required repairs, tune-ups, adjustments and refurbishments carried out before the machine is fully serviced with genuine Komatsu parts and oil. Only when the 10-stage programme is completed will the equipment receive a clean bill of health from Komatsu and be granted the ‘Komatsu Qualified’ stamp of approval. The Komatsu Qualified Used Equipment 10-stage plan includes the overriding condition that the scheme applies only to standard Komatsu used equipment. With that in place, an initial assessment report is prepared to determine that the equipment will be suitable for sale under the Komatsu Qualified scheme. When approved, a detailed tune-up service is carried out including engine pressure, hydraulics, working speeds and valves checks. Oil samples are taken to determine any abnormal wear including final drives, swing and other engines and hydraulics checks. The comprehensive inspection provided for under the plan will involve a thorough engine check and examination of all fluid levels, hydraulic system and transmission, cycle times and fuel settings, including a Komatsu oil and wear analysis to determine the condition of all major components. Throughout, all necessary genuine Komatsu parts are fitted. Upon completion, the refurbished equipment is subjected to final testing before documented inspection and worksheet reports are submitted to Komatsu for approval. If no further abnormalities are identified, the Komatsu Qualified Used Equipment approval with appropriate warranty provision can be offered. Described by McHale Plant Sales MD, Michael McHale as ‘one of the most innovative developments in the field of preowned equipment marketing’ the Komatsu Qualified scheme is intended to increase the value and reliability of used equipment whilst cutting operating costs. A stipulation is that only Komatsu Europe-appointed distributors can sell the machines with Komatsu warranty cover.’

Road Safety Conference highlights dangers of driver distraction
A new qualitative study on driver distraction, conducted by the Road Safety Authority (RSA), has revealed that mobile phones and children are the biggest distractions to a driver. The results of the study were presented at the RSA’s Annual International Road Safety Conference which took place at Dublin Castle today, Thursday 20 March 2014 and focused on the issue of Driver Distraction. The study was conducted over an 18 day period with 30 drivers of all ages and experience who shared their views, opinions and experiences of being distracted at the wheel. The participants committed to eliminating distractions behind the wheel, such as using their mobile phone, listening to the radio, eating or drinking for a period of seven days and shared their experiences through video diary blogs and discussion forums. The study highlighted how busy, modern lifestyles are cited as a reason for using a mobile phone while driving, and in particular, how drivers feel that external pressures leave them with no option but to use their phone when driving. Men and women rationalise their behaviour in different ways, with men citing work, particularly selfemployment, and women citing busy schedules and being available in emergency situations as a reason to use their phone while driving. The research also found that the most effective way to change a driver’s behaviour is to understand the lifestyle pressures drivers are exposed to, in order to help reduce the problem of driver distraction and offer practical coping strategies to manage potential distractions while driving, ranging from how best to plan for trips with children, to how best manage the demands of mobile phones, and smartphones in particular, when setting out on a journey. Speaking at the conference, Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Mr Leo Varadkar TD said: “This conference is an important step in raising awareness about the dangers of driver distraction. The discussions today show just how easy it is to be distracted while driving. We live in a plugged-in world where we are expected to be in constant contact,
18
even in the car. But the reality is that when we are driving, our attention should only be focused on driving safely. Later this year, penalty points for using a mobile phone while driving will increase from two to three points. As road-users, we have a responsibility to ourselves, our passengers and other road-users to keep our attention on the road, so I would encourage all roadusers to switch off before you drive off.” Mr Gay Byrne, Chairman, RSA welcomed delegates to the conference: “In the past, the biggest killers on our roads were drink-driving and speeding. And although these continue to be a significant problem, we are now faced with other killer behaviours as a result of the technology-driven world we live in. People may not think that using a mobile phone, or texting, or even eating and drinking behind the wheel of the car is a problem, but research tells us that the distraction caused by using a mobile phone while driving is comparable to driving drunk.” “Driver distraction plays a role in 2030% of all road collisions. This means that last year, as many as 11,274 collisions could have been caused by driver distraction – and many of these may have had serious or tragic consequences. The message here is simple – when you’re behind the wheel of a car, your only focus should be your driving.” The conference, which was attended by over 200 delegates, featured speakers from the US, Sweden, Italy, the UK and Ireland. Among the speakers at the conference was Ms Michelle Kuckelman, Executive Director of Integrated Brand Marketing, Management and Advertising at AT&T, who gave an insight into AT&T’s texting and driving campaign, It Can Wait. The campaign focuses on educating people, especially teens, about the dangers of texting and driving and asks them to make a pledge to never text while driving at ItCanWait.com. The message is simple: When it comes to texting and driving, It Can Wait. So far, the campaign has reached hundreds of millions of people through social media with over 4 million pledges to never text and drive. Speaking at the conference, Ms Kuckelman said: “Our It Can Wait campaign has changed the lives of many people in the United States by reminding us all that when it comes to texting and driving, no text is worth a life. All of our efforts are making a difference; particularly new and exciting preliminary research we're doing with state departments of transportation suggesting a strong, positive correlation between our
campaign activities and a reduction in crashes. We're excited by the impact of the It Can Wait movement so far, but as we all know from just watching our fellow drivers, our work is not done.” Among the other speakers at the conference was Professor John Lee, Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering in the University of Wisconsin, whose presentation ‘Definitions, Dangers and Directions for Driver Distraction’ focused on the impact of distraction on driving. In the US, it contributes to approximately 15% of fatal crashes, as many as 5,000 fatalities every year. To further raise awareness of the issue of driver distraction, the RSA and An Garda Síochána are launching the first ever National ‘Switch Off Before You Drive Off’ Campaign next Thursday 27 March. This new campaign will raise awareness of the dangers of driver distraction and call on motorists to turn off their devices before getting behind the wheel of the car. The campaign will have a significant social media focus, encouraging road-users to tweet their support, but not while driving, using the hashtag #driverdistraction Assistant Commissioner John Twomey, An Garda Síochána said: “We all know how distracting phones can be in any situation and the car is no different, except in the car, this type of driver distraction can have fatal consequences. An Garda Síochána welcomes any legislative change which makes the roads safer for all. This change highlights just how serious the issue of driver distraction is and we hope to further bring home this message to drivers through our National ‘Switch Off Before You Drive Off’ Campaign next week.” At the conference, Professor Charles Spence from Oxford University spoke about finding out more about the driver’s brain in order to help design enhanced safety and warning systems for both drivers and other road-users. Mr Francesco Mitis from the World Heath Organistaion presented an overview of driver distraction in the EU and Dr Claudia Wege, Human Factors Specialist at Volvo outlined how they are developing various driver distraction and inattention countermeasures in order to reduce the number of collisions related to driver distraction. Broadcaster, Journalist and TV Documentary Presenter Mr Charlie Bird presented a new RSA short documentary on people’s attitudes to and use of mobile phones when driving. The documentary can be viewed on the RSA’s social media pages, www.facebook.com/RSAIreland and www.youtube.com/RSAIreland

DAF offers Microlise telematics solution to all new R&M customers
As an integral part of all new Repair and Maintenance contracts, DAF Trucks will offer customers a unique but fully proven telematics solution. The system – which comes at no additional cost - will be preinstalled on new trucks and has been specifically tailored for DAF by industry leader and transport management specialist Microlise. The new system will be fully integrated within DAF’s MultiSupport Repair & Maintenance (R&M) packages to help pre-empt problems and provide preventative maintenance, all designed to maximise uptime and truck availability. One key benefit of the technology is to provide insights into driver behaviour, enabling operators to better understand how safely and economically their vehicles are being driven. This information can be used to put in place driver training programmes, where required, as well as fully analysing vehicle fuel consumption under all operational conditions.
Height restriction row rumbles on
The campaign to lobby the Irish Government over the introduction of a maximum height restriction of 4.65 metres for all vehicles is gathering pace. The height limit has been introduced after hauliers were informed of the move some five years ago, but the transport industry feel that the introduction of such legislation hampers hauliers. The planned ban was announced in January 2007 when the European Commission drafted a proposal on masses and dimensions for type approval which would replace the previous Directive, as part of implementing measures required under the General Safety Regulation 661/2009. With such a height restriction in place, FTA estimated that up to 20% of the Irish HGV fleet would be affected. In addition there would be a further loss to the economy from UK retailers and distributors switching from Dublin Port to alternative Ports in Northern Ireland in order to get their goods into the country.

Vauxhall launch new van
The new Vivaro van has been launched by Vauxhall as the next generation of the top light commercial for the company. A more fuel efficient and better carbon emissions than its predecessor, the Vivaro is tipped for a bright future. "The Vivaro is in a fiercely competitive market, and today's customers require more from a light commercial vehicle than ever before," says Steve Bryant, brand manager. "The British-built Vivaro looks set to further strengthen our position in the light commercial vehicle market." The new model, says Vauxhall, combines the functionality of a light commercial vehicle with the comfort of a passenger car and includes technology features such as a laptop holder and Intellilink 'infortainment' system.

Major bus deal for Scania
Scania has taken in an order for 114 buses and coaches by a Norwegian firm that operate public transport in the country. Operators L/L Setesdal Bilruter and Agder Buss AS have ordered a total of 89 vehicles which will be delivered this year and an additional 25 will be put into service during the autumn of 2016. The order is the largest that Scania has ever received for buses and coaches in Norway. “Scania was selected on the basis of an overall assessment, where price, quality, operations and maintenance were key factors,” says Alf Reidar Birkeland, L/L Setesdal Bilruter’s and Agder Buss’s Project Manager for this procurement. “Scania was competitive on price and quality but it was in operations and maintenance that it scored highest.” “This order confirms Scania’s ability to offer comprehensive solutions for a broad range of passenger transport needs,” says Klas Dahlberg, Senior Vice President and Head of Buses and Coaches at Scania. As users become more savvy, next generation solutions, such as those from Fleetmatics, are filling gaps in demand within the space and address the key pain points that businesses with mobile workforces deal with on a daily basis. Fleetmatics REVEAL+ also offers an open API for straightforward integration with existing back-office systems. Fleetmatics WORK is a mobile field service management solution designed to manage customers, jobs, schedules, invoices and fieldworkers, helping customers to save time and money while improving productivity and customer service. Fleetmatics WORK integrates with Fleetmatics REVEAL to provide additional insight into workforce productivity. What’s New – and Unique Fleetmatics customers played a key role in the development of the new platform advising on many aspects based on real world experiences and pain points. The following new features are based primarily on these customer interactions, which guided new feature development, including look and feel and ease-of-use components. Ultimately, the result is highly-relevant, highly-differentiated – and in some cases, patented– features and products.

Places – Geofences are an important building block of any vehicle tracking solution, making the location data more relevant and useful to a customer. However, many customers don’t invest the time to create geofences or, if they do, they often draw the geofence incorrectly, losing visibility into important activity. Fleetmatics makes it easy by automatically creating and categorising geofences and then, through a patented “hot spot” algorithm, suggesting corrections to geofences based on customer driving activity, a unique and powerful industry first. Timeline View – Fleetmatics’ Timeline is a visual, interactive representation of vehicle activity enabling customers to easily consume vehicle and driver activity information without investing time in reading detail-intensive reports. Customers can scan activity for multiple vehicles at a time, quickly revealing exceptions such as late starts, early finishes, long idles or long stops and drill directly down to the incident details. The level of
interactivity and drill down capabilities of this feature sets a new standard for the industry.
Driver-Centric (rather than vehiclecentric) – One of a fleet’s biggest opportunities to drive savings and productivity comes from coaching their workforce and changing driver behavior. But as drivers change vehicles, reporting becomes incomplete or inaccurate, and capturing which driver is assigned to a vehicle using a key fob or card swipe isn’t enough to solve the problem. Fleetmatics REVEAL provides comprehensive flexibility to organize your account and all of the insight in the system by either vehicle or driver. Money-based Metrics – Vehicle activity metrics fall short of demonstrating the true impact that activity in the field has on the bottom line for a fleet or mobile workforce. Fleetmatics’ Dashboard translates vehicle performance data into operational costs that make opportunities to drive savings easy to see.
Live Alerts – Flexible policy making tools help users configure alerts so they are worth taking action on and allows users easy visibility into trends in policy enforcement. Fleet managers can now eliminate the noise and see real problems even faster. Field Service Management Integration – Customers that purchase both Fleetmatics REVEAL and Fleetmatics WORK will benefit from additional capabilities enabling improved dispatch decisions and greater clarity into workforce productivity. Fleetmatics WORK connects work orders to historical vehicle activity, providing additional reports and dashboard metrics, improved accuracy and visibility into work order arrival time, actual on site time and more. Mobile – Available for Android, iPhone and iPad, the enhanced native apps from Fleetmatics provide full featured access so customers can manage their team as smoothly from their smartphone or tablet as they do from the office.

The new MH6 Series Screw Compressor from Mouvex® combines its proven screw-compressor technology with a Power Takeoff (PTO) module from Hydrocar®. he fourth annual Full of the Pipe show is almost upon us as Ireland’s leading trucking event gears up for another outing. The Cavan Equestrian Centre will once again host the show, which has grown to become one of the premier events in the haulage calendar. Event organisers Kevin Mulqueen and Colin Hegarty have made improvements to the show year on year and this year is no different with the main change being that the 2014 Full of the Pipe will be held at the Cavan Equestrian Centre on the
26
Bank Holiday weekend of Saturday and Sunday, June 7th and 8th. Last year’s event was held over the entire Bank Holiday weekend, meaning that judging and competitions did not finish up until the Monday. Kevin explained to Irish Trucker that in order to cater for hauliers both north and south of the border, they have tweaked the event slightly. “The show has gone from strength to strength since we first started it. This year, instead of having it over the entire Bank Holiday weekend, we will now be registering trucks from Friday evening until 2pm on Saturday,” said Kevin.
“The show will finish up on Sunday evening and hauliers are free to return home then or the next morning. It means that the whole weekend is not gone for them, while it also caters for the Northern hauliers coming down as they have no Bank Holiday that weekend. “The entry fee has been reduced to €30 and this year, we have judging and nonjudging events. The latter being a new area where people can bring their trucks down and show them off without being in a competition.” Once again Kevin is delighted to be hosting the event in the Cavan
equestrian Centre which he believes is the best venue in Ireland for the show. “The Cavan Equestrian Centre is the perfect venue for the show, there is no doubt about that. The majority of the show is indoors and given the nature of the Irish weather that can only be a good thing. “Hauliers can park up inside and at night they can sit around and have a beer or whatever they’d like to do without worrying about it raining or whatever.” Like last year, there are a number of categories for the various trucks to be placed in, while there are additional judges for this year’s

competitions. Kevin pointed out that there will be a greater emphasis placed on attracting more trade stands to the show, something that would benefit the show and indeed the traders. “We would definitely like to see more trade stands at the show. The more support the show gets the better and also Full of the Pipe is a great place to market their products, so it’s too everyone’s benefit.” This year’s event will have a Country & Western theme and Kevin is confident that the music provided will be to the liking of all. “We have Matt Dillon playing at the show and he’s a very popular guy in the country and western scene. We will also have Northern Ireland Country radio broadcasting live from the show. “As always there will be the usual kids attractions at the event in order to make it a family weekend, while RC Trucks Ireland will be doing a remote control display at the event also. “Our chosen charity this year is ‘Dare to the Dessert’ which is in aid of Cystic Fibrosis Ireland. Two guys Stephen and Brian Fahey
from Fahey Livestock On St Patrick’s Day, the Fahey brothers undertook a charity drive from Tullamore to the Sahara Desert in aid of Cystic Fibrosis Ireland and Our Lady’s Hospital in Crumlin. They drove from Tullamore to the Sahara desert. This involved travelling from Ireland to France by ferry, driving through France to Spain and by ferry to Morocco. This was approximately 9,500 Kilometres and was done in shifts by the two brothers,

only stopping for fuel and food. They travelled to a remote village in the Sahara desert, turned and came straight back. All proceeds from the charity trip went to Cystic Fibrosis Ireland and Our Lady’s Hospital Crumlin.” Kevin is keen to develop the vintage truck category and he has called on all owners to travel to Cavan for the June Bank Holiday weekend. “There was great interest in the few vintage trucks last year and hopefully we could get more there this year. The
response so far has been positive.” Of course no show would be possible without the help and support of the sponsors and as ever Kevin is very grateful to the companies that are sponsoring the show, some of who have been with them since the start, while for some, this will be their first year involved. “We have attracted some new sponsors this year with the likes of the Harris Group and Irish Ferries coming on board. Boreman Lighting is once again the main sponsor, while Moran Signs, Irish Trucker and the E-Flow are on board also. “We are as always very grateful to the sponsors for their support as we know that without their support, it would not be possible to host the event. I'm grateful to them and the many people that have helped out in organising the event. I'm not going to name them individually as I'm sure I'll leave someone out, but they know who they are.” For any truckers or indeed traders, this is the show to be at so now is the time to book your place. A reduced rate now applies for all bookings, so get in early and contact Kevin Mulqueen at 086 0850015.

or the past two years Full of the Pipe was hosted at Cavan Equestrian, Horse Marketing & Event Centre and given the success of those events, there was never any doubt that the show would be back at the same venue in 2014. In Cavan Equestrian, Horse Marketing & Event Centre, Full of the Pipe has found its ideal home. The largest equestrian complex in the country played host to Ireland’s premier truck show for the first time in 2012 and again last year and that event was a major success for a number of reasons, not least because of the excellent facilities at the venue but also due to its ease of accessibility – greatly enhanced by the improved M3 road network and the simple fact that it’s an indoor venue. With weather in Ireland being what it is, staging Full of the Pipe under a roof is almost
28
mandatory. It gives the truckers and other visitors a greater degree of comfort and removes much of the unpredictability from proceedings. With the non-inconsiderable threat of rain and wind eliminated, everybody can just concentrate on having a good time is a spacious and comfortable environment. Situated on the outskirts of Cavan town, easily accessible from all directions (north and south), Cavan Equestrian, Horse Marketing & Event Centre is the biggest and busiest equestrian centre in the country. It may be renowned predominantly for showjumping and other equestrian events with proven success in organising and running international performance horse and pony sales - but it is also becoming increasingly popular as an events centre. With 12,000 square metres of indoor space available (as well as outdoor areas), the weather

issues that plagued previous Full of the Pipes in its early years were put to bed for once and for all with the move to this new venue.. Seven years ago, major redevelopment transformed Cavan Equestrian, Horse Marketing & Event Centre into a versatile venue for hosting all sorts of events – large scale or small scale, concerts or exhibitions, indoor or outdoor, the aforementioned 12,000 square metres capacity comprising three arenas all under one roof. The organisers of Full of the Pipe were drawn to the venue not least because of its vast and versatile range of facilities, including a large sand arena, two grass arenas, a restaurant, two bars, full lighting, heating and electricity as well as a PA system throughout, toilets, changing rooms and paved tarmacadam truck and car parking facilities. In the past, Cavan
Equestrian, Horse Marketing & Event Centre has played host to concerts by the likes of Kenny Rogers, Christy Moore and Jedward as well as wedding fairs, a military vehicle show, farm machinery shows, a modified car show and an ideal home show. From the word go, Cavan Equestrian, Horse Marketing & Event Centre sounded like the perfect partner for Full of the Pipe. This always seemed like a marriage made in heaven and so it has proved as the previous two events went off smoothly, without a hitch, at its new home. Everybody who attended the 2012 and 2013 shows was impressed by the facilities and the feedback has been unanimously positive. The venue has received a solid thumps-up from the trucking fraternity and from the Full of the Pipe organisers, so this year’s event promises to be another success.

innovative and exciting charity. Starting on St Patrick’s Day, the fearless siblings took off in their van and drove across Ireland before taking a ferry to France; they then crossed France and Spain and took a ferry to North Africa. Here, they travelled down Morocco to a remote village in the Sahara Desert. Simple. Oh, and then they drove the whole way back. All in all, it took them just over six days to complete the novel fundraiser! Commenting on the spectacular marathon drive, Brian says: “We left on Paddy’s Day and drove nonstop from Daingean in Offaly
to Tarfaya in Morocco, which is 800km into the Sahara Desert. It was a total journey of 9,476km and our goal was to do it in seven days. But we did it in just over six, leaving on the Monday at 5pm and arriving home on the following Sunday at 7pm.” For the purpose of the run, the Fahy brothers manned a 2007 Renault Trafic van, which had the names of some companies who provided sponsorship emblazoned on the side. Brian and Stephen provided the van themselves and funded the entire trip out of their own pockets. It was all-action, as Brian reveals: “The van never stopped at all.

We spoke to Brian about this remarkable adventure.
The ‘Dare to the Desert’ fundraiser was conceived and executed by Stephen and Brian Fahy to raise money for two worthy causes – Crumlin Children’s Hospital and Cystic
Fibrosis Ireland. The organisers of Full of the Pipe have generously agreed to allow the lads – regular pilgrims to the popular truck show in Cavan – to put on a presentation at this year’s event to try to raise some additional funds for their
We drove around the clock. We booked into a hotel in Spain on the way back and we stayed for four hours’ sleep and a quick shower, but we were up against the clock so we kicked on. We left the south of Spain on the Saturday morning at 5am and we were at Calais in France in 22 hours – 2,500km later. Algeciras in Spain is just an hour from Morocco by boat.” How did the lads come up with such a madcap idea?

“The brother, Stephen, comes up with a lot of mad ideas and this was one of them. Three lads from Ireland went out on bikes on the 1990s and that’s where the idea came from. But we went 400km further than they did…” At the time of writing, approximately €10,000 had

been raised, although it is very difficult to put any kind of figure on the totals until all sponsorship cards have been returned. “We did a lot of fundraising in local towns and gave sponsorship cards to people we know and deal with. People we buy from also gave us some money as well.” So, do the Fahy brothers
tend to do a lot of this kind of thing? “This is the first one we did together but we will probably do it again next year. We might go right down into Morocco this time, into Mauritania, which is no man’s land” How did the tie-in between ‘Dare to the Desert’ and Full of the Pipe come about? “We go to the show every year and
they have told us that the show is there for us if we want to use it to try to raise some more money for our charities. Kevin and Colin have been very supportive. We’ll bring the van up to the show to display, and two of our lorries as well. We have a 15-minute edit of the video we made on the trip and we’ll leave it on repeat to let people get a taste of what we were up to.” Fahy Livestock International was founded by Brian’s grandfather Michael Joseph Fahy in 1957. “My father PJ then took over and he runs the business now alongside Stephen. It’s a family business and I’ll be joining them myself inside the next few weeks. “We have a fleet of four lorries at the moment, all Scania – three R Series and one 143. We’ll be taking the 143 and a road train up to Full of the Pipe.” The Fahys carry cattle, sheep and pigs to export markets on the continent, mainly Spain, Italy,

Holland and Belgium. As luck would have it, the daring dash into the desert could hardly have gone any better. There were many unforeseeable things that could have gone wrong but, mercifully, none of them did. “The van never broke down anyway,” Brian quips. “We serviced it, gave it a general run-through, and changed the brake pads. We never burned a drop of oil and I’ll tell you it’s a good oul van to stay going at those speeds!” How much fuel did the trip require in total? “We needed 14 fills and it’s a 100-litre tank. It was only 88c a litre in Morocco but France and Spain are both dearer than here so that sort of cancelled it out. We brought a 250-litre drum with us, which was sponsored by Flaherty Fuels, who also picked up the tab for our boat from Rosslare to Pembroke. That was nice to get and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who sponsored us in any way or who donated money to ‘Dare to the Desert’. If people weren’t prepared to put their hands in their pockets then there would be no point in organising an event like this.” What about food? What did the brothers fuel themselves with? Presumably – and I’m
going to go out on a limb here – there is no KFC in the Sahara? “In France and Spain we just stopped to eat, but we brought food with us from home to eat while we were in Morocco. We had a small gas stove with us and a gas bottle and we cooked the food ourselves.” Sons that any mother would be proud of!

our busy season.” Attractions supplied include everybody’s favourite old reliable – bumping cars – as well as a number of family rides. These include the Skyglider and Twister. For kids, there is a vintage carousel from 1940 as well as a variety of rides and attractions, such as the very popular chair-o-planes. At the time of writing, Mark hadn’t finalised exactly what attractions he was going to bring to the 2014 Full of the Pipe, although he did have a rough idea: “I’ll definitely be bringing the bumping cars as well as one family ride plus a lot of smaller kids stuff, including the Flintstones train,” he notes. Getting all the equipment up to Cavan for the weekend is no small undertaking! “We will be coming up from Doonbeg in west Clare so it’ll be a long run up, but we’re looking forward to the event,” says Mark. “Altogether, we’ll be bringing up four trucks, with generators and cranes built in. We’ll be up for the weekend and it’s going to be a new experience for us. We were delighted when Kevin got on to us and asked us to get involved in Full of the Pipe. It’s new ground for us so it’s going to be interesting.” When it comes to family entertainment, nobody does it better than McCormacks Funfair. They have been doing this for years – decades even! - and have amassed a wealth of experience and expertise. This will be brought to Full of the Pipe 2014 and their presence is sure to increase everybody’s enjoyment on what promises to be a fantastic weekend. At the end of the day, Full of the Pipe is a celebration of life and a family event first and foremost; as such, McCormacks Funfair will form an integral part of the entertainment. All in all, Mark McCormack is bracing himself for a busy summer: “We do a lot of vintage shows and festivals and around half of our custom would be here in Clare. We also hire out some equipment from time to time. We’re more or less booked out for the summer, so we can’t complain,” he concludes. IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

MORAN SIGNS MAINTAINS ITS STRONG LINK WITH FULL OF THE PIPE
S
ponsorship is an important source of funding for Full of the Pipe. Fortunately, the nation’s premier annual truck show can depend on the backing of a host of official event sponsors, whose support and input is vital in giving the hauliers of Ireland a show they can be proud of. One such sponsor is Moran Signs, a company which has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with Full of the Pipe. Moran Signs has been
42
involved with the show since its inception five years ago and will be to the fore as a loyal sponsor again in 2014. As tireless organisers Kevin Mulqueen and Colin Hegarty prepare to bring the Full of the Pipe extravaganza to the Cavan Equestrian Centre for a third successive year, the Castlepollard, County Westmeath based company has once more come on board to provide some welcome funding. Moran Signs has been synonymous with Full of the Pipe since Day One and actually acted as main sponsor of the event in its first two years. Thus, Damien Moran – who hails from a trucking background himself (his father Jimmy and brothers Declan and James own and run Eagle Motors
Truck Repairs in Mullingar) knows all about the importance of this show to the trucking fraternity at large. Once more, Moran Signs will have their mobile exhibition unit on-site over the weekend of June Bank Holiday and will be able to provide all sorts of truck graphics on the spot as well as number plate systems and t-shirt printing. As ever, Damien is really looking forward to the show and he predicts that this year’s FOTP is going to be the biggest and best yet: “Cavan is always a great show and I’m sure this year will be no different,” he enthuses. “I’m confident this year’s Full of the Pipe will be the busiest yet. There are a lot of new lorries out on the roads now and hopefully all the lads will be bringing their
SPONSORS
pride and joy to the show in June.” Truck graphics is a huge part of Moran Signs’ business, so this is a big weekend for Damien – not just in terms of providing some sponsorship but also with regards to generating some welcome business. One of the new products that Damien will be showcasing at this year’s event is mug printing. This is a new service being offered by Moran Signs, whereby customers can have mugs custom printed using any photograph or image off a camera, phone or from the internet. The mobile exhibition unit – which will be manned by Damien himself plus two other staff members – will be showcasing and providing this personalised product to punters at Cavan Equestrian Centre over June Bank Holiday weekend. An exciting new product has recently been added to the Moran Signs armoury: “We are adding mug printing to the range of services we’ll be providing on site,” he confirms. “We can print
IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS
sponsors designed_Layout 1 24/04/2014 17:25 Page 2
literally any image onto the mug and they are finished to the same high standards as all out other work.” These make for a nice gift, novelty item or a cool, low-key way of promoting or advertising your business. Using the latest state-of-theart equipment and drawing on years of experience and professionalism, Moran Signs carries out a top class job, every time. Renowned nationwide as the sign-writing specialist, Moran Signs designs graphics and signs which are tailor-made for your business, using state-of-the-art technology to produce highquality, durable and economic signage, which is guaranteed to get your business noticed. From vehicle graphics for trucks and vans to pitch signs, safety signs, stickers, labels and t-shirts, Moran Signs can cater for every need. As well as the new mugs, the t-shirt printing service is also sure to be popular with visitors at this year’s Full of the Pipe, who can choose a tshirt and have their own unique, once-off garment produced in a matter of minutes. But, of course, vehicle graphics is the real draw for truckers. When you’re looking to get your business noticed, vehicle graphics and wraps are the best way to stand out from the crowd … especially in the current economic climate where spare cash is at a premium and few operators can afford to invest in new trucks. Simply having existing units brightened up or transformed by the addition of some professional, eye-catching graphics is a fine alternative. Unlike billboards or other advertising, vehicle wraps are in essence mobile advertising, giving the operator exposure to many different markets as the vehicle moves along. Whether you’re interested in having work done on one van
or an entire fleet of trucks / vans, Moran Signs can come up with a solution to suit your needs and budget. Deploying cutting-edge techniques and precise manufacturing standards, all vehicle graphics offered are designed and applied to exact specifications, resulting in exceptional durability and beauty. Such is the nature of any truck show that vehicle graphics will be the centre of attention in Cavan this June Bank Holiday weekend anyway; so it is fitting that Ireland’s premier provider of them will be on hand to offer advice and expertise on this key area. Damien is always prepared to hammer out a good deal, too, so make the

dedicated eFlow fleet manager who handles all transactions under one single account, making tolling as simple as it can be for the business and for the vehicle driver. Businesses also benefit from significant cost savings as an eFlow– registered fleet customer. eFlow’s own research indicates that business customers with 20 vehicles or more are achieving savings of over €5,000* per year, under the toll providers pricing structure. This represents a major cost saving for businesses with significant fleets travelling throughout Ireland. eFlow in the community While eFlow remains focused on its business objectives, it is the work and support that eFlow undertakes in local communities that define who we are as a company. eFlow has initiated a sponsorship programme which focuses on supporting projects and initiatives which provide tangible benefits to youth projects in local communities. Events like ‘Full of the Pipe’ give us the opportunity to meet our customers and to talk to them in a social environment. It helps us to understand our
fleet customers and their needs and thereby allows us to continually improve our customer service offering. eFlow’s sponsorship and support of activities are designed to make a difference in the communities in which we operate. BOREMAN
The main sponsor of this year’s Full of the Pipe is once more Boreman Ltd., an innovative company specialising in the design, manufacture and distribution of Auto-Electric lighting. Boreman Limited was founded in October, 1997 as a supplier of spare parts for the Irish truck and trailer market. During 2001, Boreman Limited first noticed a niche in
IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS
the Auto-Electric lighting market for a young enthusiastic company willing to expand industry design boundaries. In late 2002, Boreman Limited sold off the majority of its business interests, concentrating exclusively on Auto-Electric lighting. Boreman Limited launched its first Auto-Electric product range of spot lamps with complete “E” Homologation at Auto Mechanika in Frankfurt later that year. Since then, the Boreman Limited name has become synonymous with quality. They currently offer nine products ranges consisting of over 90 products into more than 20 export markets. All product designs and tooling are 100% owned by Boreman Limited. Boreman Limited is currently the only Irish company using its own designs and tooling to manufacturer fully “E” Homologated AutoElectric lighting for the truck and trailer industry. Lighting solutions are provided to cater for all the main manufacturers, including Scania, Volvo, Iveco, MAN, DAF and Renault. “Boreman Ltd. are proud to continue our support of the Irish trucking business and once again be the main sponsor for Full of the Pipe,” says Daragh Boylan. “We congratulate Kevin and Colin on a fantastic show. The trucking industry has suffered more than most over
the past five years so it is a credit to you all that this show can have such overwhelming support. We at Boreman Ltd. are determined to do our bit by offering you top-quality products at affordable prices; remember that when you buy Boreman you are supporting Irish business and Irish jobs. “Have a great show and good luck to all the entries in the various categories! It’s not an easy life; far from it. The industry has been kneecapped like never before by a gruelling recession, a brutal economic collapse conceived by crooked bankers, greedy speculators and unvigilant politicians. Between them, those negligent parties have brought the economy to its knees. Even though they were in no way to blame, the construction and transport sectors have borne the brunt of the collapse. Companies have vanished, jobs have disappeared, contracts have been lost. The landscape has changed entirely. Operators face unprecedented challenges as they bid to – literally – keep the show on the road.
E
very year, truckers from all over the country attend Ireland’s premier truck show, Full of the Pipe. Twentyfourteen will be no different, with a huge response predicted from the commercial-vehicle-operating community at large. Irish Trucker takes a look at what this remarkable show means to the folk who keep the
wheels moving seven days a week, 52 weeks per year. Full of the Pipe is a weekend for hauliers. In a nutshell, that’s what the event is all about: an annual celebration of the life of truckers here in Ireland.
Competition is fierce; margins are tight; overheads are staggering; rates appear to have flatlined. It’s harsh and unforgiving out there but the truckers just keep on trucking. It’s in their blood, an inherent component of their very DNA. These men and women refuse to give up. They solider on, serving their customers, fulfilling contracts, investing in their fleets and contributing enormously to the slow-but-sure recovery of the Irish economy. At Full of the Pipe 2014, the hauliers of Ireland get a chance to let their hair down, to celebrate another year at the coalface and to look forward to better times ahead. They can meet up and have the craic, forge contacts and relationships, show off their vehicles, admire each other’s trucks. This show has been conceived for truckers and no stone is left unturned in ensuring that the trucking fraternity benefits both socially and professionally by attending. Over the course of June Bank Holiday, 2014, truckers from every nook and cranny of the island will descend upon Cavan Equestrian Centre for the fifth staging of Full of the Pipe – the third time it has been held at the wellappointed Breffni County venue. They will travel in their hundreds, nay thousands to share some great experiences and celebrate what it means to be

a trucker in Ireland in 2014. While some will travel huge distances over the Bank Holiday weekend, others are more fortunate as Full of the Pipe is virtually on their doorstep. For County Meath based trucker David Browne, it’s just a 50km cruise along the N3 from Kells to Cavan town and Bob’s your uncle! It’s a no-brainer really and David will be present once more at this year’s FOTP extravaganza.
“We were at the show in Cavan for the last two years and the plan is to head over again,” he confirms. “It’s a really good show and it’s right beside us, really. It’s well organised and there’s a lot there for everyone so we’ll pay it a visit again. The Equestrian Centre does be really well laid out and they put a lot of effort and imagination into it. It’s a professional show and they deserve all the support they
IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS
get.” The show wouldn’t work without the input of the hauliers t h e m s e l v e s . Naturally, work comes first and some operators can’t afford the time off. But for those who do make the journey, it can be a r e w a r d i n g experience. “Three or four of us went up to it last year and we intend to go over again for the 2014 show. We’ll bring a few of the trucks over and I’m sure it’ll be a good weekend for all.” David oversees a fleet of six beautiful Scanias and he takes great pride in his vehicles. All the units are maintained in immaculate condition at all times and, as recently as February of this year, a brand new Scania 560 Streamline (featuring the new shape) was added to the David Browne Haulage fleet. While David likes to keep a low profile himself and certainly isn’t one to try to take centrestage, his trucks are always sure to turn the heads of anyone with an appreciation of eyecatching HGVs. Prizes were gleaned at the first ever Full of the Pipe show in Athlone as well as last year’s event in Cavan and there is a possibility that more cups could be brought home to Kells this year. However, David will be at the show as a spectator first and foremost as opposed to blatantly exhibiting his lorries. David Browne H a u l a g e specialises in Ireland, UK and continental work. “We do a bit of
everything,” the founder says. “We have fridges, curtainsiders and Euroliners and will take on a bit of anything. We also do a bit of subcontract work.” In business for a decade and a half, David generates employment for four people full-time as well as a couple of part-time workers. He is pleased to report that business is going very well at the moment, although he certainly wouldn’t be getting carried away: “Business is good enough at the minute, but it could all change tomorrow, so we won’t take anything for granted. We’ll keep our heads down and keep providing a good service to our customers.” Spoken like a true trucker!

C Trucks Ireland are back at Full of the Pipe 2014 after impressing at last year’s show with their exhibition of models. If you ask nicely, you might even get a go at operating them.
Founded by Kevin McGovern, RC Trucks Ireland’s presence at Full of the Pipe last year was a huge success so there was never really any doubt that they would be back at the Cavan Equestrian Centre once more this June. Toys for big boys are a serious business and RC Trucks are specialists in this field, with a
stunning array of Radiocontrolled trucks set to be on display at Full of the Pipe. There will be something for everyone in Ireland to come and see and once again there
will be audience interaction. RC Trucks Ireland is a one-in14-scale remote control truck. They have regular meetings and just come together and show the trucks off.
Radio controlled trucks are self-powered trucks that can be controlled from a distance using a specialised transmitter. The term R/C has been used to mean both remote controlled and / or radio controlled, which today will normally refer to vehicles controlled by a radio-frequency link. The attention to detail on these trucks is astonishing. There will be a good selection of vehicles on display at Full of the Pipe. Anything that a real truck can do, these trucks can do. Tamiya and Wedico are the two main manufacturers and you can get all makes of model trucks – Scania, DAF, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz and MAN. These can be fully-customised to suit the customer’s needs, with light bars etc. and you can then get various trailers for them. There is a huge appeal among truckers when it comes to scale models, and remote control models are hugely impressive. To see the latest examples of what is on offer and to hear from the experts, Full of the Pipe 2014 is the place to be.

PULLING POWER: IRELAND’S STRONGEST MAN TO DEMONSTRATE HIS POWER
I
reland’s strongest man Keith Maher will be at Full of the Pipe 2014, where he will display his pulling power (literally!) and enormous strength by pulling a truck, which has been supplied by Darren Kennedy Steel. Keith is looking forward to his maiden appearance at the Cavan Equestrian Centre. There will be many great attractions at this year’s Full of
the Pipe and one of those is the appearance of the incredibly strong Keith Maher, who won the crown of the Republic of Ireland’s Strongest Man, finishing first from a field of twelve contestants in the final in Wicklow town in March of this year. It was a great achievement for the Offaly native to finally get his hands on the coveted prize as he had been close to
glory on a couple of occasions in the recent past, finishing second in 2012 and fourth in 2013. Keith will be in the Equestrian Centre on the Saturday and will pull a lorry 20 metres every hour between noon and 4pm. His show of strength is an event not to be missed and is sure to impress all those who witness it. Having participated in
strongman shows in many locations around the world – including Uzbekistan, America, Britain, Poland and Austria – Ireland’s strongest man is looking forward to making his debut at Full of the Pipe… Keith - in conjunction with his wife Olivia - has just recently opened up his own gym in the centre of Carlow town, called Vitality Fitness, where he can be found putting fitness
Budweg, the Danish Caliper company produce an extensive range of caliper repair kits for both air and hydraulic calipers. When Irish Trucker spoke to Paul Kane, their Irish distributor, regarding the range of repair kits, Paul stated that ’The Irish climate and particularly the recent prolonged wet winter, has had its effects on all types of vehicle brake maintenance. Correctly serviced calipers will greatly improve braking performance, in addition to extending the service life of a caliper’.

enthusiasts through their paces from 7am until 12pm every day. The gym is not your ordinary, everyday affair, but offers something a little bit different: “I will be incorporating a lot of different things that I’ve seen in various other gyms around the world,” he says. “I’ve picked up a lot of different techniques and I’ll be making those available to people coming into the gym.” Keith was something of a latecomer to strongman events. He went to a gym for the first time in June, 2010, at
the age of 29 and entered his first competition the following year. “I always had an interest in it as a young lad and I knew I was naturally strong. When you live in Offaly and work on the bog for three or four months every summer, throwing turf up into the trailers, then you build up a lot of natural strength. “I always watched the World’s Strongest Man on television from the late ‘80s, but didn’t know the event was in Ireland until I saw a friend appearing in
it one year. So I decided to give it a shot.” Keith came from a good sporting background in the Faithful County. He had thrown the shot put and javelin and was also a gifted gaelic footballer, representing Offaly at juvenile level as well as lining out for Kerry Gaels in London and the London senior team. A real fitness enthusiast all his life, he took up the gym for something extra to do and things just developed from
there. Ireland’s strongest man does everything he can to highlight the sport and give something back to it. This includes a lot of charity work and a novel initiative he’s taking on in Vitality Fitness – a youth powerlifting club for 16-18year-olds to help them build up their strength naturally before entering adulthood. He’s an all-round top bloke and is a great addition to this year’s Full of the Pipe calendar.

The Commercial Vehicle Testing is a big part of the business
aving already developed an unrivalled reputation in the fields of haulage, servicing and school bus operation, Mount Leinster Haulage also branched into commercial vehicle testing with tremendous success. Just over three years ago, a strategic decision was taken by the directors in this successful family-run business to re-brand the commercial test operation as ESC Commercial Test Centre Ltd. Mairead Spruhan Ryan daughter of founder / managing director Eamonn Spruhan, notes: “One of the biggest developments here at Mount Leinster Haulage in recent years was the establishment of ESC Commercial Test Centre Ltd., which was set up as a stand-alone company to provide commercial vehicle testing. “Basically, the new company grew out of the existing one. The transition has been seamless and, in many ways, nothing has changed. It’s still the same test centre and we offer the exact same service as before, but we just wanted to separate the two companies.” Eamonn’s wife Breda and sons Edward and Cathal are the directors
of ESC Commercial Test Centre Ltd., which provides annual Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Tests (CVRT) for Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) and Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) from across counties Carlow, Kildare, Wexford, Laois and sometimes beyond. The very nature of commercial testing is such that there will always be a demand for the service once it is provided in a professional, friendly and efficient manner. Regardless of whether the economy is
New name; same unbeatable service In late 2010, Mount Leinster Haulage renamed the vehicle testing arm of its operation ESC Commercial Test Centre Ltd. While the name may have changed, the County Carlow based family business still provides the same stellar level of service for which it has become renowned over the past three decades and more. Irish Trucker dropped into the Bagenalstown base and got an update from founder Eamonn Spruhan. CONTACT DETAILS IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

going boom or bust, operators still have to get their vehicles tested and certified. Edward Spruhan commented “We’re reasonably busy. It is a statutory requirement so, at the end of the day, people do have to pass the test if they want to keep their vehicles on the road.” Does the presence of an on-site workshop mean that it’s essentially a one-stop

shop for testing and repairs? “Owners have the option of having repairs done on site by Mount Leinster Haulage - or of getting a quote from us - but this isn’t something that we try to force onto anybody. The service is there if they need it but they are obviously free to make their own arrangements.” Mount Leinster Haulage’s state-of-the-art workshop / garage provides full servicing, maintenance and repair services for its own fleet of buses, trucks and trailers as well as catering for the needs of other local and national commercial vehicle operators. “Investment is ongoing in the garage and we have all the latest dealerlevel diagnostic equipment needed to work on all makes and models of commercial vans, lorries, trailers, and buses” says Cathal Spruhan, who was recently shortlisted for Technician of the Year 2014 by Fleet. “We also provide a towing and recovery
service for all HGVs; trucks, buses as well as LCVs.” Between drivers, testers, mechanics / technicians and office / admin staff, Mount Leinster Haulage / ESC Commercial Test Centre currently provides employment to a team of 25. While business at the test centre remains brisk, the directors reveal that the haulage sector can be unpredictable: “The buses are mostly doing

school runs and service work. We tend to be reasonably busy in that the work is mostly concentrated during the academic year, but the haulage fluctuates.” The haulage business tends to be managed by the owner and another son Seamus, whose passion from a young age was trucks. “We provide a local and national service and we are ticking over. But the way the economy is at the moment, with
a lot of uncertainty out there, you take it one day at a time.” Mount Leinster Haulage was established as a garage repairs and servicing operation predominantly back in 1980. During the intervening 34 years, the family business has diversified significantly into various different areas, including haulage, school buses and vehicle testing. since 1979 and their fleet has grown considerably since the first mini bus - a Comer- was purchased. Around about the same time, Mount Leinster Haulage also became active in haulage, starting off by doing work for a local quarry as well as drawing sugar beet and grain. Mount Leinster Haulage’s advent into the sphere of vehicle testing in May, 2007 – and the subsequent arrival of ESC Commercial Test Centre Ltd. – was a quarter of a century in the making. This was an area that founder Eamonn Spruhan was always interested in since the mandatory tests were introduced in 1982 and he now oversees one of the most dependable and popular commercial vehicle test centres in the country. To get the testing operation up and running, significant
investment in infrastructure, equipment and training was required and the company proprietor knew it would take time before he started to see any return on this investment. However, ESC Commercial Test Centre is now a fullyestablished and thriving entity in its own right and – working in conjunction with the Road Safety Authority – it is providing a commercial vehicle testing service that’s simply second to none. Of course, none of the other facets of the operation have been neglected and the directors of Mount Leinster Haulage continue to concentrate their energies on promoting all other elements of the business, i.e. the haulage, buses and workshop. Across the board, things are going well and the business is in a strong position going forward.

subcontracted to a large number of hauliers, ranging from single-vehicle operators to companies with fleets of 15 or 16 lorries, both local and international. The amount of employment generated is significant. “Indirectly, between harvesting contractors and haulage, we employ over 120 people,” John notes. Why did Murray Timber Group decide not to provide its own haulage solutions in-

We are able to call upon a strong team of experienced haulage contractors and we feel it is best if everybody sticks to doing what they are best at.” Established in Ballygar, County Galway by managing director Paddy Murray in 1977, Murray Timber Group has developed into one of the
largest, most progressive and flexible sawmills in Ireland. The company continues to invest in state-of-the-art sawmilling equipment on an ongoing basis to satisfy customer requirements. round logs annually, employing 135 people directly and almost as many again indirectly. Operating from two central locations Ballygar in Galway and Ballon, County Carlow (acquired in 1997) - the company boasts two world-class processing facilities capable of processing in excess of 1,000,000m3 of logs annually. Both plants are ideally located to meet domestic and export demand. All MTG’s construction timber is kiln-dried and graded in accordance with NSAI standards to ensure adherence to specified moisture content regulations, using state-of-the-art drying techniques; then regularised on the planing line and graded to ensure that it is of the highest quality. Murray Timber Group employs a professional, experienced forestry
team that is responsible for all purchases for the Group. These purchases are made from private growers and Coillte, while logs are also imported from abroad. The team at Murray Timber Group has the experience and the expertise to offer advice to any grower who needs information regarding growing, thinning policy, harvesting or selling their product. The Group launched its own SNR brand of construction timber in 2008. Its timber is used extensively across all sectors of the construction industry - in traditional building and timber frame structures constructed both onsite and offsite. Murray Timber Group is the first Irish sawmill to offer planed all over, eased edge construction timber as standard. This raises the bar to an unprecedented level in

terms of quality and presentation. Kiln-dried timber from Murray Timber Group is X-Ray graded according to the European EN14081 machine grading standard. The timber is planed after the drying process to ensure maximum uniformity of size and ease of handling for the end user. All Murray construction timber bears the CE mark to denote its conformity to the European directive. While some sectors of the market are still reeling under the strains of the recession, the timber processing industry has never been busier. “The sawmilling markets in both Ireland and the UK are strong at the moment, which is leading to high intakes of logs and a large amount of timber processing,” says John Ryan. As for future plans, the forestry manager at Murray
Timber Group concludes: “We hope to expand further and to up the levels we are processing each year. “We were the first Irish sawmill to offer planed all around timber, which is what

the UK and Irish markets demand. “In early February, we oversaw the shipment of over 100 lorry-loads of logs from Scotland – the biggest single shipment we’ve done since
the company started. That gives a good indication of how busy we are and we’re expecting the traffic to remain busy both in and out of the mills through the spring and summer.”

Primo excellence by design Primo Specialist Vehicle Conversions (SVC) was established in 2007 and since then has produced world class engineered vehicle designs both for Ireland and on a Global scale. Since its inception Primo has become a name to rely on for vehicles conversions in Ireland. Managing Director and qualified electrical engineer, Ted Dunican explains.
T
he Ferbane-based company provides vehicle modification and reconfiguration for a wide variety of vehicle applications and are fully committed to providing a quality, reliable and safe service. They have particular expertise in the design and build of technically advanced vehicle solutions such as front line Ambulances, Garda vehicles / rapid response units (RRVs) both covert and ‘live units’, personnel and accessibility vehicles, the variety of vehicle types is substantial and continues to grow. “We specialise in creating solutions,” Ted outlined to Irish Trucker & Light Commercials. “A lot of our work is one off, bespoke solutions. Many of our customers know exactly what they want and we make it a reality. Primo adopts an OEM approach and have a dedicated product development and engineering design team.

“Both of these departments will work alongside our customers and devise an ‘engineered solution’ which meets all technical, legislative and budgetary requirements. Designing a good product can only be done with a good team and at Primo we have a skilled workforce of eleven staff members whom also have a passion for the work they do which is a key ingredient to any successful organisation. Due to our work force been multi disciplined we can adapt and flow process build or bay build to suit capacity needs. “Recently we designed and built a riot vehicle for An Garda

Siochana. The riot vehicle was a new design and a first of its kind which needed extensive research and CAD (Computer Aided Design) models by Primo before manufacture or commitment to our customer commenced. Safety of the personnel in the vehicle was of paramount importance but functionality to ensure public order was of equal importance. Both the Primo Technical review team and the Garda workgroup1 (WG1) together have now produced the riot vehicle of the future for Irish law enforcement.” The designing and manufacture of specialist vehicles is a complex business and demands a scientific process. “Our design office are responsible for design integrity and part number allocations,” explains Ted. “The design office are also responsible for theoretical weight projections and CoG (Centre of Gravity) calculations. All this
preliminary work is done before a single vehicle is touched so the customer and Primo can design a product within all the design parameters safely and with confidence that final article will be correct and to specification.” Ted's Business partner and CEO Noel Kerrigan is head of Technical department at Primo and explains he is busy implementing ISO & COP (Conformity Of Production). Noel a qualified automotive craftsman is also a member of the Technical Inspectorate for Ireland & UK in relation to vehicle design. Noel also was invited last year to the London Royal Arts College in UK to give his opinions with other experts from Europe on vehicle design in particular medical vehicles. The Irish Coastguard is one of the company's many satisfied customers: “The Irish Coast Guard has been working with Primo SVC for the past number of years,” revealed Irish Coast Guard Operations Manager Declan Geoghegan. “Primo has always delivered very good quality vehicles we are very pleased with the professionalism and high standard of workmanship.” Primo's client list

also includes other blue chip names such as the HSE, St John Ambulance, RTE, ESB, Irish Red Cross, the Order of Malta, Airport Police Dublin Fire Brigade and the Defence Forces. Primo has also delivered product to India, Kenya, Caribbean and Turkey via London based agency.
"So as you can see we have the required skills and ability to build for foreign markets," says Ted. The Board of Directors at Primo recognised that partnerships and collaboration was and still is very important for commercial growth but also for technical knowhow and advanced

methods of vehicle construction. Primo made a decision to become affiliated with a UK University who specialise in engineering and technology advancement. "We were of the opinion we needed institutional and academic partners,” explains Ted, “hence why we decided to follow in the footsteps of our sister company in the UK, Vehicle Conversion Specialists (VCS). Being part of an academic centre that can advise on technical and legal issues relating to any aspect of vehicle design is a huge advantage to us and our end users.” Primo work extremely closely with VCS, their sister

company in the UK. VCS is run and owned by Mark Kerrigan (Technical Director), who is Noel’s son, and Mr Wayne Sullivan (Commercial Director). VCS is one of the most advanced vehicle producers in the UK and perhaps even Europe. VCS produce specialist vehicles for UK health and police services and build product for such countries as Spain, Gibraltar, Trinidad & Tobago, Nigeria and France. They have numerous approvals for all types of products which include EWVTA (European Whole vehicle type approval) on all Peugeot produced products from 3.5 T to 4.0T
Ambulances. In conjunction to EWVTA they have COP, ISO, CEN 1789, Reg 66 rollover Reg 14, crush test and dynamic and static test approvals. “Our relationship with VCS accelerates our market growth and expands our expertise,” explains Noel Kerrigan. “As an example we have a shared server with VCS where we (Primo) can access the vast technical drawing library and approvals at VCS and adopt it for our home grown clients, this speeds up our development process. “VCS have a strong expertise in technical design and processing power, production techniques and compliance as they have four full time design engineers, two research and development engineers, 21 assembly technicians and a homologation engineer, who are constantly designing and developing new product. We are lucky we can tap into that
technical knowhow and offer to our clients in Ireland." VCS recently secured an order for UK health service in the region of 652 vehicles making them one of the largest producers in the UK. "2014 is an exciting year for both VCS and Primo. VCS introduce their composite Modular Ambulance which has had 18 months of design and development work concluded. We will be marketing that product in Ireland along with a specialist 4x4 on a VW Amarok again a VCS product, both products have Mercedes and VW approvals,” says Noel. “VCS don't stand still - they are constantly designing, developing, moving forward and we at Primo share the same goals." Vehicle conversion is a very competitive business and both Primo and VCS are always looking to other markets so as not to rest on one product type: “Primo has been able to offer various

Primo have a wide range of op tions available including towing equipment, tail lifts, cages, tow bars, swing lift cranes, tool boxes, beacons, ‘zero harm’ initiative tailoring and many more. "The Primo/VCS & VFS partnership is part of a bigger plan for the future,” Noel explains. "We are currently extremely busy here at Primo and have work orders confirmed until August 2014 with tenders pending. We believe our focus on quality, engineering excellence and our approvals in place with OEMs such as Renault and Mercedes makes Primo the better choice." “But don't just take my word for it,” Ted exclaims, “come see for yourself.”

Many hauliers in the area have benefitted from the development
n overview of the Corrib Field sees that it was discovered in 1996 by Enterprise Oil which established Enterprise Energy Ireland Limited to bring the Corrib field to production. Enterprise Oil was acquired by the Shell group in 2002 and Enterprise Energy Ireland Limited changed name to Shell E&P Ireland Limited. Ireland currently imports more than 90% of its gas and generates two thirds of its electricity from gas. The Corrib
development is strategically important from an energy security perspective, because at peak production, Corrib has the potential to deliver more than 60% of Ireland’s gas needs. The project will contribute €6 billion to Ireland’s GDP over its lifecycle and will have created more than 1,000 jobs during the construction phase providing 175 full time jobs on completion. In 2004, Shell E&P Ireland Limited awarded the Corrib Gas Terminal Earthworks Contract to Roadbridge Ltd.
Roadbridge has successfully delivered many Energy Infrastructure projects as main contractor and this Limerick headquartered civil engineering firm has the experience, capability and a proven track record in delivering major projects across a range of sectors on time and on budget. Their core ethos is not just to meet client expectations, but to exceed them, making them the partner clients want to work with. The company was founded in 1967 by Limerick man Pat Mulcair, who passed
Digging for success e Corrib gas project is one of the most significant engineering projects ever undertaken in Ireland. Located some 83 kilometres off the northwest coast of County Mayo, this medium sized gas field will be developed as a subsea ‘tie-back’ facility, connected by a pipeline to an onshore processing terminal located approximately nine kilometres inland. away in February this year. Roadbridge operates in Ireland, United Kingdom, Poland, South Pacific and the Middle East making it one of this country’s largest civil engineering firms. Roadbridge has completed major projects to the highest standards of quality for clients in the transport, renewables and energy, utilities, commercial, industrial, waste management and leisure sectors. They have adopted a team approach and focus on value engineering and innovation in order to achieve best results for their clients. The Corrib Gas Terminal and Onshore Pipeline Contracts are one of the biggest projects undertaken by the company and for this month’s edition of Irish Trucker we profile this project and speak to both Project Manager Michael Dolan and Logistics Manager Tom Walsh about the work involved. Michael revealed that the project initially began in 2005 with the removal and
transport of 450,000M3 of peat. “This involved 45 trucks per day in and out of the site. That phase of the project also included structural concrete works, underground services and pavement works,” said Michael. “To remove all the peat, Shell obtained the relevant E.P.A licences. Most of the equipment we use is specialised and all employees go through the proper training and have the necessary certification to operate the machinery. “Health and Safety is the major priority for us. Both Roadbridge and Shell carry out daily inspections to
ensure that everything is done properly. All drivers enter an extensive driver training programme before they are allowed on site.” With that much traffic and machinery in and out of the site, everything has to be carefully managed and planned and this is where Tom comes in. “We would work closely with the Mayo County Council. There is a lot of heavy haulage on the roads here every day and there are daily limitations in place. “A traffic management system has been implemented and it works very well. All the drivers know
Safety is paramount for Roadbridge
what is expected of them and careful driving is paramount.” The onshore pipeline is the final phase of the Corrib gas project that remains to be completed. The onshore pipeline section is 8.3km long and 4.9km of this will be installed in a tunnel, the majority of which will run under Sruwaddacon Bay. The contract for the 4.9km Corrib tunnel was awarded to a joint venture between BAM Civil and Wayss & Freytag, subsidiaries of the Royal BAM Group. The partnership brings together the vast tunnelling experience and expertise of Wayss & Freytag with BAM Civil’s expertise in

Dungarvan Transport has 35-years experience
stablished in 1979 by Diarmuid Horgan, the Co. Waterford-based firm is now run by his son Tomas who, since coming on board in 1995, has overseen the company’s growth from a one-truck operation to the successful enterprise it is today. Having recently taken delivery of four new Actros 2545 models from Mercedes-Benz commercials dealer Surehaul of Clonmel, the Dungarvan Transport fleet now stands at 30 vehicles and 70 trailers. In addition, Tomas and his brother Gerard, who is a qualified HGV mechanic, run a busy commercial workshop – Munster Truck & Trailer
Services – as well as the family farm. Specialising in the transportation of timber, agri-products and pharmaceuticals, and the holder of a Waste Collection Permit for the 26 counties, Dungarvan Transport has been at the forefront of Irish and international haulage for 35 years and has expanded its operations to handle a diverse range of freight for clients at home and abroad. “We work for a wide range of local, national and international companies,” Tomas explains. “While much of our work is concentrated on timber transportation, we also specialise in bulk feed, tanker
and container transport. We provide topclass haulage services throughout Ireland and Europe. Our team of highlyskilled and motivated drivers, mechanics and office staff always work to meet the demands of our customers. By operating a fleet of modern trucks and equipment, reliability is always assured.” Admitting that the recession posed many challenges for Dungarvan Transport, Tomas believes the family business has come out on the right side of it and is well positioned to continue its growth in the years ahead. “There has been a slight pick-up in business after a few very tough years.
Dungarvan Transport 35 years a-growing e recent addition of four new Mercedes-Benz Actros trucks to its fleet is proof positive that Dungarvan Transport is on the right road after the difficult years of the recession. CONTACT DETAILS 90

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL AT
DUNGARVAN TRANSPORT
dungarvan designed_Layout 1 22/04/2014 14:16 Page 3
Dungarvan Transport recently took delivery of four Mercedes-Benz Actros
Obviously, this is good to see because every haulage company has been under severe pressure for the past six or seven years, and a lot of them have gone under. Our aim is to remain competitive and to continue giving our customers the best service they can possibly get. We want to guarantee our service and standards for the future,” he says. The acquisition of four new vehicles, which brings the number of Mercedes-Benz Actros trucks in its fleet to 12, reflects Dungarvan Transport’s ambition and commitment to delivering quality transport services. Wrapped in the company’s distinctive blue livery, the impressive tractor units are already a familiar sight on Irish roads. Commenting on the order, Surehaul’s sales manager Mark O’Connor said: “We are delighted that Dungarvan Transport has continued to add to its existing fleet of Mercedes-Benz trucks. It’s a great endorsement to see them returning for more, having received the first two MP4 trucks we delivered back in July 2012. We look
92
forward to continuing this success with our new classleading fuel efficient Euro 6 engines.”
For Dungarvan Transport, the decision to reinvest in Mercedes-Benz was a straightforward one. “They give good fuel economy and are very reliable. We also have Scania, Volvo and Renault in our fleet,” Tomas adds. The Horgan brothers are in their thirties, with Tomás’ role as managing director involving the management and development of the business, and Gerard specialising in workshop management and technology. Together, they’ve build up a strong and loyal customer base, and employ over 40 staff between Dungarvan Transport and Munster Truck & Trailer Services, 32 of which are drivers. Coming from a farming background, neither Tomas nor Gerard are afraid of hard work and this has undoubtedly been a factor in the company’s growth. The fact that the business is located on a farm has also allowed for development
which might not be possible in a location where space is at a premium. The day-to-day transport management is carried out by Aidan Lyons, while Patrick O’Farrell manages the workshop. Dungarvan Transport has invested in the latest computerised systems to provide up to the day POD’s, invoices and query response. The business also operates a state-of-the-art satellite tracking system to assist in providing the most efficient solutions to its customer’s logistics requirements. Dungarvan Transport’s sister company, Munster
Truck & Trailer Services, has been in business for 10 years. Providing a complete range of truck, bus and trailer repair services, it grew out of Dungarvan Transport’s own in-house maintenance service. “There was an opening for this type of service in Dungarvan and, with our knowledge and expertise in maintenance and repairs, we decided to offer it,” the affable managing director remembers. Among the services provided by Munster Truck & Trailer Services are: full DOE preparation; DOE testing;

commends the IRHA on its successful negotiations relating to Essential Fuel User Rebate and weight increase, and the FTAI on its input into raising standard and accreditation for both licensed hauliers and own account operators. Because of our ‘can do’ attitude, we are the first point of reference by our existing customers for new and additional services. ublin city based Mortons Coaches Ltd. is Ireland’s leading provider of luxury coach hire, operating a state-of-the-art fleet of executive coaches to provide a full range of solutions including corporate hire, private hire, international trips, conferences, pilgrimages, sports events, incentive packages, extended tours and contract work. In business for 31 years, Mortons Coaches boasts a wealth of experience and employs a professional team to provide customers with a friendly, reliable service. Mortons Coaches operates a modern and versatile fleet of vehicles - including 16-seater minibuses, 24-seater, 33seater and 53-seater coaches as well as 84-seat double deckers – all of which are maintained in immaculate condition at all times. The company has certainly come a long way since founder Paul Morton purchased his first bus on a whim threeand-a-half decades ago. It started off as a hobby, but gradually Paul recognised the potential in providing a luxury coach hire service across the capital and
beyond… “I set the business up in 1983,” he reflects. “Prior to that, I had been working in The Irish Press, delivering newspapers on a bike, and also for Premier Dairies, delivering milk. I’d been with The Irish Press since I was 16 and stayed with them until 1985. “I bought my first bus in the late ‘70s – a Volkswagen minibus – just for driving the lads to nightclubs and for weekends away and stuff like that. It was just a bit of craic in the beginning but then I bought another one and began to see that there could be an opening there to go into coaches full-time.” In 1983, Paul made a landmark departure when he purchased his first 52-seater – an iconic Leyland Leopard Continental. Later that same year, the fleet was embellished by the addition of a Leyland Leopard Plaxton Panorama Elite. “We were doing private hire, football matches, nightclubs, Bingo, trips to Knock – all sorts,” the company owner recalls. “I didn’t actually give up the day job until ’85. At that stage, I was running two coaches and two minibuses and I had to make a decision to either get out
or get in. I decided to give it a go.” A Ford 192 Turbo and a Plaxton Supreme luxury coach were sourced soon after and Paul, who has consistently evolved and enhanced his fleet, has never looked back… In 1989, he made his first major investment by purchasing a Salvador Caetano DAF MB 200 Highliner in the UK for the princely sum of £60,600. It was on the back of this bus that Mortons Coaches really started to earn a stellar reputation. The bus was much sought after by Aiken Promotions, for example, and was deployed for the run of ten Neil Diamond concerts in the RDS – a significant breakthrough. Further ‘gigs’ with the likes of The Eagles and The Beach Boys followed and Mortons Coaches was now recognised as the leader in providing luxury travel for major bands and artists. Paul’s decision to invest boldly and bravely in the fleet was paying off handsomely: “We were getting a good slice of the work going in Dublin at the time and we had the vehicles to back that up and provide an unrivalled service. I knew we had to invest and didn’t hold

back. I could see that there would be demand for highend coaches and I knew we had to move up the line, even though those were tough times. “That Salvador Caetano was the first loan we ever had. I took a loan out over five years and we operated that bus for eleven years in total, before selling it on for around eight grand. It was one of the best buses we ever had – a real workhorse – and it played a major role in the history of the company.” Today, Paul Morton oversees a fleet of 22 vehicles. The oldest in an ’04 DAF. “I bought DAFs from 1998 until 2007 and then in ’07 I bought five new coaches – three DAFs and two Mercedes. In September 2010, I did a deal with Scania and we’ve been taking one a year off them since January, 2011. Every vehicle in the fleet offers the very latest in terms of technology and comfort. The service is 100% customer-orientated and Mortons Coaches has built its name on providing a level of service that is quite simply second to none. “The fleet is varied and the work is varied,” Paul continues. “We do contract work and service runs. We do school runs and cover the colleges in Dublin. We do inter-schools games and pilgrimages and also do trips abroad, including England, Scotland, France, Austria and Switzerland. “We are also in the process IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

work and this allows us to keep the fleet very fresh.” Looking to the future, the personable Dub concludes: “I’m hoping to be running a fleet of about 28 vehicles within the next two-three years, with the oldest being ten years old. We spend up to €300,000 per year on upgrading the fleet but we are in a very strong position in that we are only ever financing three vehicles at a time. “We still believe in bringing in the best and most-
advanced coaches into Ireland. For example, our 2013 Scania – which is a 57seater – was the first 12.3metre coach in Ireland with two axles.” Mortons Coaches will continue to set the standards for the industry. They are already famous nationally and internationally for the excellent care they take of their clients and will go to extraordinary lengths to ensure that every passenger is a happy one. J
W Carnegie was established in 1934 by John Webster Carnegie to supply the construction industry with sand and gravel. Eight decades on, it is still going strong! For 40 years and more, the Wicklow-based family business has been managed by Dermot Carnegie, the founder’s son. Originally operating out of Blackrock in Dublin, the company moved to its present site in Dillionsdown, Blessington in 1948. Here, the scale of the operation and the breath of the product line are served by an updated static screening,
washing and crushing plant. Meanwhile, their head office is in Killiney, County Dublin. Over the years, the company has grown organically, forging an unrivalled reputation for itself and supplying materials (sands and gravel; drainage products; and crushed stone) to some of the largest and most prestigious building projects in Dublin, Wicklow and Kildare, including - but by no means limited to! – the M1 and M50 motorways, Intel, the CityWest Campus, N11 motorway, the Cherrywood Campus and the Luas
project. JW Carnegie has developed a close working relationship with all the major concrete producers and building providers, many of whom they have being serving for a considerable time. Offering clients high-grade materials backed up by a reliable, friendly and cost-effective service, the team at JW Carnegie are available to offer advice on which type of sand, gravel or crushed stone is suitable for a particular job – and every project is treated as a priority, no matter how big or small.
Eighty years of excellence For eighty years now, JW Carnegie & Co. Ltd. has been supplying the civil engineering and construction sectors with the highest quality washed sand, aggregates and crushed stone. We dropped into the long-established family business’ quarry in Blessington, County Wicklow and got an insight into day-to-day operations from Dermot Carnegie. CONTACT DETAILS

Reflecting on the genesis and early days of this renowned company, current MD Dermot Carnegie notes: “My father, who was originally from Sligo, started out doing sand and gravel at a time when there were no tipping bodies. Those were different times; during the war, he had trucks drawing turf from the west of Ireland to the Phoenix Park. He ran the company up until the early 1970s. I had a few trucks of my own at that
stage and incorporated them into the company and more or less took over from there.” Today, JW Carnegie still boasts all the core values of a family business, including the all-important personal touch. Dermot makes himself available to answer all queries and requests and is joined in the office by his wife Iris and daughter Jill. Regarding the main line of work, Dermot adds: “From our own quarry we supply all

washed aggregates, mainly to the concrete industry. We also supply crushed stone but we buy that in rather than producing it ourselves. We supply the Dublin market and also serve counties Wicklow and Kildare as well as a small bit into Meath.” Fleet-wise, Dermot operates a fleet of six tippers – a mixture of Mercedes, MAN and Renault. “We were running a fleet of 20 vehicles at one stage but had to downsize when the economy took a hit. Now we generally try to encourage clients to come and collect the materials.” In addition to the lorries, JW Carnegie & Co. Ltd. also boasts a sizeable fleet of plant and machinery in the quarry, including Caterpillar loading shovels and Komatsu bulldozers as well as Volvo and
IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS
Bell dump trucks. Of course, the construction sector has taken a real hammering since the Celtic Tiger’s roar became a squeal and JW Carnegie has not escaped the economic downturn completely unscathed: “We run a tight ship, employing 15 people at the moment,” says Dermot. “Times have been difficult and we lost a lot of customers and also had to suffer a lot of bad debt. But we feel that the worst of it is over. We have a good tight customer base now and things definitely seem to be picking up a little. But there’s no room for complacency because prices are bad and competition is severe. “Some of the work that is coming around, I wouldn’t even look at it to be honest,
because there is no point in taking on work just for the sake of it. You have to be making money. So, things are still quite challenging … but it’s nothing that we haven’t seen before. We’ve been in business for 80 years and there have been a lot of ups and downs in the economy during that time.” To be still standing after eight decades is indeed a tremendous achievement and speaks volumes for the products and services on offer. “We are experienced and knowledgeable and we provide excellent quality materials. All of our aggregates carry the CE marking and we keep on top of the quality aspect of things at all times.” Looking to the future, Dermot admits that it’s going to be a case of steady as she goes for the foreseeable: “We will watch the overheads and we won’t go mad. When things were going crazy during the boom, we didn’t go mad and that’s why we are still here. We kept our heads while others were losing theirs. “I started downsizing long before anybody else thought the bubble was going to burst … a good eight years ago. I could see it coming. Those days were never going to last. I had been through it before and you could see that there was simply no way it was going to last.” So, the tiger is dead. But, thanks to a combination of shrew leadership and exceptional products, JW Carnegie & Co. Ltd. is very much alive and well.

lenn Kernohan gave Irish Trucker a guided tour of the newly refurbished premises and for this month’s edition we show you what has been done. Since being first established in the 1990’s James Kernohan & Sons has seen its workload increase on an annual basis, this has in turn led to the need to extend their facilities. Recent times has seen the erection of two new specialist sheds, one which houses a state of the art workshop and engine store and another
solely for the storage and safe keep of parts. The facilities are fully licensed to deal with the handling and processing of end of life vehicles with modern up to date equipment to ensure the process is as efficient as possible, the company is also licensed to transport such material and has a specialist fleet ready for the job. Glenn revealed to us that commitment to quality has always been the company’s motto and one that they strive
IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS
to continue to meet with the ongoing development work. “Our premises at Randalstown, doesn’t resemble a traditional dismantlers’ premises, with disassembled vehicles strewn all over the place. That is why we have constructed the new shed to ensure every part can be stored in a designated area,” said Glenn. “This saves a lot of hassle when it comes to looking for parts for a customer. We know that the customer is usually under pressure to get their
truck back on the road as soon as possible, so we won’t keep them any longer than necessary.” Customers are generally impressed with the organisation they see at James Kernohan & Sons Ltd as there are rows and rows of shelving housing the parts. “We have moved away from the traditional image of the dismantler and it is a move for the better”, he added. “Keeping pace with the customer demand, the age profile of the vehicles the company dismantles is pretty modern. We are dismantling from 2004 onwards. The trucks we are dismantling best reflect the trucks that are on the road.” Providing such a professional vehicle dismantling and spare parts supply service for customers across Ireland and the U.K means that the team at James Kernohan & Sons are always looking at ways of improving the business. “We are committed to providing a wide range of guaranteed parts and salvaged vehicles combined with an efficient service offering genuine value for money. “We can supply engines, gearboxes and various other spare parts to customers across Ireland and the U.K. We use a network of couriers to ensure that all parts can be delivered on a next day service were the need arises. We provide parts for commercial vehicles including Volvo, Daf, Scania, Iveco, Mercedes, Man, Renault and ERF.” Glenn stressed that the aim was always to have the part needed by the customer in stock in order to ensure their truck get up and running again in the shortest time possible. “There are thousands of parts here at any given time and we would generally have what the customer need, but through our network of contacts , we would be able to have that part within 24hrs if it wasn’t here.” The environment is one area

All parts are meticulously stored away
that the company takes great pride in and when a vehicle is dismantled all the necessary parts are stored and any waste is disposed of in the proper manner. “When a vehicle arrives here on site for dismantling, it is brought inside and every
sellable part is removed and stored. The majority of the parts can be sold but anything that is left is sent for recycling. There is no waste.” The company offers a delivery service for larger parts such as cabs, engines, gearboxes etc. through a
network of couriers used and next day delivery is a guarantee. The reputation of the company precedes them at this stage and customers come from far afield to get their parts with the client base growing all the time. “Most of our new customers would hear about us through word of mouth, which is very pleasing. Truckers are always talking to one another. We find a lot of our new customers come to us through personal
recommendation. “We also have a fully functional website jameskernohanandsons.com where customers can view what engines, gearboxes, differentials and cabs we have in stock at any given time.” James Kernohan set up the business and he is still actively involved in the day to day running of the company, along with his sons Glenn and Neil. “We are continually reinvesting in the business, which means the business is growing every year. Every year we try to carry a bigger and wider stock,” Glenn concluded.

upplying animal feed and top quality products backed up by sound advice to ensure their customers reap the benefits is the Newtownstewart, Co Tyrone based company's bread and butter according to Transport Manager Colin Surphlis. Colin's grandfather Lowry Surphlis established the business in 1948 in era of post war austerity when not only food, but farm machinery and building materials were in short supply. Today the family firm continues to prosper under the management of Colin's father Maurice in a much expanded way from those early days in the late forties and fifties, when trading only consisted of a grocery shop and a sub Post Office. 1987 saw the installation of bulk bins
for the storage of dairy, beef and sheep nuts and a weigh bridge to allow customers to collect bulk feed at a cheaper price. A new warehouse for the manufacture of farm buildings was also erected at this time. Due to the demand from the farmers a new meal store was erected two years later and a mixer wagon installed to mix straights, as agriculture was expanding and stock numbers were increasing rapidly we felt the need to provide feed at a much reduced rate. Further renovations were completed in 1997 when the hardware store was extensively refurbished and a new office accommodation block was built incorporating a fully computerised system throughout the building. The computer retails animal health

products, animal feeds, fertilisers, farm supplies, hardware and building products and the manufacture of farm sheds. There is now an additional 33,000 square feet of bulk storage space, for straights and the installation of mixing plant allow us to give our customers a further choice in products and services. In addition, the company has its own blending plant and batching operation with which they manufacture quality animal feed using the best quality of barley, wheat and corn feeds from Belfast mills such as James Clow and Clarendon Feeds.
“Our core business is the supply of animal feed to farmers as well as farming supplies, hardware and gates and so on. Basically we cater for all farmer needs,” explained Colin whose brother Adrian is also involved in the day-to-day running of the company. As company transport manager, part of Colin's job to ensure their commercial fleet is suitably equipped and maintained to meet their customers' needs. With a fleet numbering 40 in total, he has plenty to keep himself occupied with during the course of the working week. “We took delivery of five

new trucks, Volvo and Scania models, in January which brought our fleet up to forty,” he revealed. “We pride ourselves on the fact that all our vehicles are well maintained and kept in good shape. It’s important that the right image is sent out. “Our customers and members of the general public have often remarked how well our vehicles look on the road.” The fleet's award winning red and cream colour scheme and attractive livery is instantly recognisable and plays a central role in helping the company make the right
first impression on customers. “We think it’s important that the red cab and cream bodies with their distinctive red and white stripes are easily recognisable and instantly associated with our company. “Competition in all aspects of business is very strong these days and anything that will get you noticed and enhance your reputation in business is very important.” With a well-established reputation for reliability down through the years, and a quality of service which is second to none, it doesn't come as a surprise to learn that business has remained

Roland Forestry Ltd. is one of Ireland’s leading forest harvesting companies. Here is the 1470E at work on the Tipperary border
P
roviding its services to all forest owners, from private and public bodies to corporate clients, Roland Forestry Ltd. was founded by Alfie Neville and his wife Margaret in 1992. Alfie brings a quarter of a century of experience to the family business. In the meantime, Roland Forestry has become synonymous with professional and affordable forest harvesting and timber extraction operations throughout Ireland and across Europe. Over the years, he has invested significantly in the business, acquiring his own state-of-the-art fleet of harvesters, forwarders and other plant
and machinery associated with forestry – all equipped with the latest technology and software and operated by a crew of experienced and fully-trained drivers / operatives. The range of services provided includes – but is not limited to – site assessments, inspection paths, forest road construction, forest harvesting and timber extraction, and timber marketing. Working in forestry is like a vocation to Alfie Neville. It’s in his blood and is clearly something he was always destined to gravitate towards: “My father had worked with the Forestry Service (pre-Coillte) and my uncles were also
involved in forestry, so I suppose it was in the genes,” he confirms. “Before the company was formed, I would have worked with smaller machinery for a number of years, before going into the more modern machinery after Roland Forestry was established.” Alfie also has five brothers involved in forestry. John and Tony work alongside him in Roland Forestry while George fronts an independent company specialising in excavator work, road building and fencing (preparing greenfield sites for planting) and Pat offers a small-scale harvesting service for small sites and broad leaves. Walter
From small acorns ... From humble beginnings, Roland Forestry Ltd. in County Kilkenny has developed into one of Ireland’s leading forest harvesting and marketing companies, with an impressive fleet of forestry machinery at work across the country as well as in the Scottish Highlands. Irish Trucker dropped into the Hugginstown base and got an insight into day-to-day activities from founder Alfie Neville. CONTACT DETAILS 110

Significant investment in the fleet has been a constant since day one
has recently retired from Coillte. As any reader of this magazine will realise only too well, ongoing investment is necessary for any fleet operator, regardless of the sector: “With machinery, you can’t ever stop investing,” Alfie notes. “The day you finish investing is the day you finish…” Regarding the range of services provided, Alfie reveals: “The backbone of the operation is harvesting and we harvest in both Ireland and Scotland at present. We run a fleet of 28 harvesting machines, mainly John Deere and a few Komatsus. In Ireland, our main customers would be Coillte, Glennon Brothers, Murray Timber Group, East Log Company, GP Wood and Balcas etc. “We also purchase standing trees nationwide and harvest, haul (using hired hauliers) and market them ourselves to different mills.” Roland Forestry Ltd. will only work with the best in the business. To this end, they enlist the services of Lanigan
Brothers Timber Haulage in Kilkenny and Hall Transport in Longford to transport the aforementioned timber, while Hoyne Transport in Cuffes Grange, Kilkenny is enlisted to move machinery from one site to another. A lot of different hauliers are also indirectly employed. “I tried doing some lowloader work in the past but I found that it was too much to take on so I went back to hiring the hauliers in.” To ensure that the operation runs as smoothly as possible, the machinery and drivers tend to remain strategically located at various locations around the country. This means that the equipment doesn’t have to be moved around much; instead, it is kept at forestry hotspots and the drivers are always close to their place of work. “We are mostly concentrated around the west and the south because of rates and also because that’s where most of the timber is,” Alfie points out. At present, Roland Forestry Ltd. provides gainful

employment to a team of 40 as well as the five or six hauliers who work for them indirectly. Furthermore, as Coillte and sawmills would also use their own hauliers to transport timber harvested by the Kilkenny company, even more employment is indirectly generated.
“A lot of haulage work is generated by the forestry sector,” Alfie states. “About 90% of the timber harvested and milled in Ireland is exported. Some is imported from Scotland, milled here and then exported again – that’s a lot of haulage!” Harvesting in Scotland

Alfie Neville operates a state-of-the-art fleet
since February, 2010, the founder of Roland Forestry continues: “This is a very busy sector and certainly one of the busiest in haulage at the moment. It’s very like farming in that it never really went up that much during the boom and then never dropped off much thereafter either. It’s very steady.
“We are growing steadily every year and increasing the fleet as we go along.” Alfie is very much a pioneering presence in the Irish forestry industry and is always prepared to seek out new machinery and methods to make the operation – and the sector as a whole – more efficient. “Over the years, I
have trialled a lot of different machines in Ireland,” he confirms. “For example, we introduced the first mechanical planting mechanism into Ireland and we were also the first to do scarifying in Ireland [which cultivates the land for replanting]. “At the moment, we are

pioneering a new project in Scotland – a peat land restoration programme with 2,500 hectares to be cleared. I have a Neuson Ecotec Harvester with a 14-metre reach on site there and that’s a five-year project. They approached us and that is a good example of the expertise, experience and connections we have been building up over the last 25 years paying off.” Looking to the future, Alfie concludes: “We will continue to diversify. As new types of machinery are developed for different aspects of forestry work, we will look at them. We have the most up-to-date fleet of forestry machinery in Ireland and we intend to keep it that way. “I can see myself going more into the private sector in Ireland, working with people who have their own forests. We would be able to take on an entire site from start to finish and carry it the whole way through.” Roland Forestry Ltd. have developed into leaders in their specialist sector and one gets the distinct impression that they will remain at the forefront of the industry for many years, nay decades, to come.

The vehicle has proven to be very effective
he arrival of a new Compressed Natural Gas vehicle in March 2014 which is the first of its kind in Ireland reaffirms their position as a “green operator” and will be based in Cork. Celtic Linen have worked closely with Board Gais Networks in getting this on the road. The Eco-Hybrid version of the Mitsubishi Canter vehicle is one of the most cost effective, economical and environmentally friendly trucks on the market. Already, Celtic Linen has in their 50strong vehicle fleet, and electric truck that is operated throughout the streets of Dublin. This has proven to be a hugely popular addition to the company’s logistics’ Manager Killian O’Sullivan spoke about their desire to be greener. Government policy has set a target for 10% of all vehicles on our roads to be
powered by electricity by 2020; this will represent approximately 230,000 vehicles. For commercial fleets, electric and hybrid electric vehicles offer reduced fuel, emissions and operating costs. Batteries fitted in electric vehicles offer Ireland the opportunity to store electricity from our high wind and ocean renewable energy resources, reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels. Celtic Linen’s fleet operates from four plants around Ireland, Ballinasloe, Dublin, Cork and Carlow as well as from its central hub in Wexford. As an innovative company, Celtic Linen are always seeking ways of implemented a number of innovative environmental initiatives in achieving and maintaining ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management Systems. “We work towards being more
environmentally friendly in all aspects of the business and the transport sector is no different,” revealed Killian. “We are committed to a greener policy and the inclusion of firstly the electric

"Financially the vehicle is viable given the grant aid from SEAI. The energy costs are approximately half that of a diesel powered truck, the maintenance and consumable costs are considerably lower." Of course, the cost of fuel has been a contentious issue for anyone involved in the haulage industry and Celtic Linen are no different in this respect. “There is a fuel management system in place and all the drivers are highly trained and know how to manage fuel consumption. But definitely, the electric vehicle, the CNG vehicle and the hybrid have proven to be very beneficial in this respect and we are considering adding more of these vehicles to the fleet.” Part of Killian’s role is to ensure that the vehicles are kept roadworthy and in pristine condition and to this end, the fleet is kept modern and fresh. “The oldest artics we would have would be no more than two years old. This year we have added two new Mercedes Benz Actros to the fleet.” Killian revealed that the height restrictions being placed on HGV’s in Ireland will hamper their business. “There are nine double-decker trailers operating in the fleet and due to the new height restrictions, they will be put off the roads. “This means that we will have to do more runs and have more trucks on the roads. Our fuel costs are set to go up, while the mileage on the trucks is also set to rise as well as the wear and tear not only on the vehicles but on the roads too. It just doesn’t make sense to bring in such height restrictions.” Celtic Linen Ltd was established in 1926 and the company specialises in supplying linen, garment and dustmat rental services to hospitals, hotels and industries throughout Ireland. Celtic Linen operate three production facilities and one central warehouse all located from their headquarters at Drinagh, just south of Wexford town. The company operates the 50 vans and trucks in the five delivery/collection fleets and it is unique in that its inbound collections are generally the equivalent weight of outbound deliveries, effectively a built in 'backload'. The company can process approximately one million pieces of linen per week and supplies laundry, rental services and product sales to the industries mentioned. As one of the first companies in its industry to achieve full ISO 9001 standard in 1994, Celtic Linen’s quality is recognised for maintaining the highest industry standards. Every function in each of its three plants is documented for full traceability and measurability, deliverability and accountability are all part of the service. IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Limerick Motor Centre is a Hyundai dealer
or this month’s edition of Irish Trucker, we speak to Sales Executive Gerry O’Brien about the latest Hyundai and Isuzu models to be launched. Limerick Motor Centre is now Ireland’s longest serving Hyundai dealer as they celebrate 25 years supplying the popular brand to a large customer base. Ger revealed that these are exciting times for both the Hyundai and Isuzu ranges. “The ix35 has undergone a major facelift and there is a big demand for it. At the moment, it is the biggest selling car in Limerick. “Indeed for the first time since 1979 Hyundai are among the top three selling car brands in Ireland. Hyundai was the third top selling brand in January, pushing Ford out to forth.
“It’s not easy to improve on a success story like the ix35. But Hyundai seemed to have managed it. There’s no reason to meddle with the attractive and distinctive “Fluidic Sculpture” design and rugged family SUV stance that has made the ix35 so well received. Instead they searched for specific enhancements, like led headlights, new alloy wheels, heated seats front & rear, and touch screen stereo with reversing camera on Executive and Premium level. They also fine-tuned the handling, improved efficiency and added even more safety features.” Ger has been selling Hyundai models for 14 years now and he believes that the deals available make them the best value car on Irish roads these days. “The five-year unlimited mileage
warranty is a big reason in the popularity of the Hyundai range, but not only that their reliability and the fact that they are an attractive range of good looking cars have seen them soar in sales over the last number of years.” Ideally situated on the N24 Ballysimon/Tipperary Road on the outskirts of Limerick City, Limerick Motor Centre is a proud supplier of Hyundai and Isuzu to Limerick City, County, Co. Clare and Co. Tipperary. They are conveniently based on our four acre site, close to the M7, Limerick ring road, while being a mere 2.5 kilometres from the city centre. They are also members of the Society of the Irish Motor Industry and are a long established franchise for Hyundai & Isuzu, passenger and commercial

They also have a purpose built crash repair centre with new spray booth, jig and bench. With their own purpose built paint mixing room, water based paint with appropriate ventilation and duly qualified staff to operate same. The premises are reassuringly secure and they have a very large customer data base with a lot of repeat customers. They have established a strong reputation and are very well regarded within the motor industry. In the last 12-months, Gerry has seen a big increase in business on the back of the new Santa Fe, the face lifted ix35 and new i10. The i40 (1.7 diesel) and i30 (1.6 diesel) are serious contenders in the fleet market as they come with a five year unlimited warranty. Cunningham’s lead the way Cunningham’s Commercial Refinishing has been leading the way in its field of expertise for almost 30 years now and managing director Micheāl Cunningham explains to Irish Trucker why he feels the business has been so successful over that period.

ttention to detail and the ability to customise are the hallmarks of a company, which has gone from strength to strength over the years. Initially specialised in panel beating and spray painting before expanding the company’s range of services which now include shot blasting, repaints, crash repairs, vehicle sign writing, vehicle graphics and design and professional valeting. Work is carried out on not only cars, light and heavy commercials, but marine painting is another specialised area added to the company’s portfolio. “We are able to diversify into any area of spray painting and no matter what the job is, big or too small; we will endeavour to do it to the highest standard possible. Our ability to offer a quality service and expert workmanship ensures that customer satisfaction is always guaranteed,” said Micheāl. Through the years, the customer base has grown dramatically and Micheāl pointed out that the fact that the customers keep coming back speaks for itself. “The quality of our work can be gauged from the amount of repeat business we get. Our customer list is growing all the time with the majority of them coming
from the West, North-West Mid-West and Midland regions. Whatever they are looking for, we can do it from them. “We do a large amount of crash repairs, but we mainly specialise in refinishing work and with a highly-skilled and experienced team and high-tech equipment at our disposal, we can guarantee a top-class finish,” he added. Micheāl revealed that there is a lot of legislation to be adhered too in the industry and he stressed that Cunningham’s Commercial Refinishing did everything by the letter of the law, unlike some businesses in the same game. Such is Cunningham’s standard of work that they were one of the first refinishers in the country to achieve compliance under new EU environmental regulations, while the company is fully registered with Galway

County Council under Organic Solvent Regulations. The company is VOC regulated. “We are fully compliant with all the legislation that is there whether it be for the council, Department of Environment or the Environmental Protection Agency, we are full certified. “Two years ago, we invested a lot of money into upgrading the facilities and meet all the required standards needed. We were actually the first company in Ireland to be registered to use non-solvent paints after we invested heavily in a commercial spraying booth to achieve this.” Micheāl feels aggrieved that the legislation is not properly implemented, which leads to many rogue operators being able to offer a cheaper service, but one that lacks the quality provided by Micheāl and his team. “You pay for quality and the customer is guaranteed to get that with us. There are a lot of guys out there that would not have the proper papers and it is wrong that they are allowed to carry on in business, while the few that are following the letter of the law are paying to do so.” Despite this Micheāl stated that they were busy all year round as their customers know what they are going to get when they bring their vehicle to the premises in Belcare, Tuam, Co Galway. “Yeah thankfully, we have been very busy. We offer a wide range of services, so that allows us to cater for many vehicles, plus the marine work has really begun to take off in the last year. “A lot of our work would come about through word of mouth as someone would say the quality work that we have done and take it from there.” Cunningham’s repair and re-spray all the leading commercial brands, including Volvo, Scania , DAF, Hino, ERF, Mercedes, Mitsubishi, Ford, Renault, Iveco and Isuzu as well as trailers, tankers, horseboxes, rigids and artics.
