street tacos. FVHS performing arts groups—the choir, dance team, cheer team, band, and theater—entertained guests with their best showcases. And visual art students displayed their pieces in the gym for all to see. Don Marion, an FVHS parent, served as master of ceremonies for the night and introduced state and local dignitaries, as well as five of the school’s past principals. The school received recognition by the state Assembly and Senate. “The only way our students will continue to feel the way so many feel about the last 50 years is to instill a

love of school and dedication to championing school pride and culture,” Principal Dr. Morgan Smith said. The ceremony concluded with the burial of a historic time capsule. Throughtout the evening, the school’s mantra “Baron for Life,” reverberated throughout the event’s atmosphere. “FVHS is special in that it’s a separate community and entity within the city itself,” FVHS senior Tyler Le said. “The students are incredibly generous, kind, and proud of who they are as both individuals and as Barons,” Le added. www.FountainValleyMagazine.com

Los Amigos student earns educators’ honor Los Amigos High School senior Melissa Palencia was recognized by the Association of California School Administrators at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana with the 2016 Every Student Succeeding Award. The award program is designed to honor students who have overcome challenges or exceeded expectations to succeed. Palencia was nominated by Dr. Lila Jenkins, Garden Grove Unified School District director of 7-12 Instructional Services, to represent the district in the award program. She was recommended for nomination by Carlos Castillo, Los Amigos AVID teacher; Principal Vicki Braddock and Assistant Principal Stephanie Heflin.

“Melissa is not distracted by the obstacles she has encountered and remains laser-focused on her goal of becoming an engineer,” Castillo said. “She currently has a cumulative GPA of 4.04—a particularly special feat since her schedule has consisted of Advanced Placement, Honors, and AVID courses over four years of high school.” In addition to her exceptional academic record, Palencia has achieved success in high school athletics and community service. She has contributed to the success of the Los Amigos girls’ cross country team as well as Girls League. Palencia plans on studying mechanical engineering and will attend college in the fall.

Ron Davis has written and published a fun educational book about animals called “Out on a Limerick.”

GOING OUT ON A LIMB FV’S RON DAVIS HAS WRITTEN A CLEVER CHILDREN’S BOOK USING LIMERICKS

t first glance, Rod Davis’ credentials don’t fit those of a children’s author. The 28-year resident of Fountain Valley has been an investment advisor and a college professor for much of his life, and he authored “What You Need to Know Before You Invest” for publishing company Barron’s Educational Series. But more recently, Davis turned his attention to children’s literature with his new book, “Out on a Limerick.” “Out on a Limerick” is an 89-page, illustrated paperback book about animals produced through Davis’ own publishing company, Unique Ink Press. The chapters are educational but they’re written in a fun way, using limericks and accompanied by illustrator Tom Kerr’s drawings. In the introduction of his book, Davis explains: “ What started out as a book of silly limericks led me to the weird world of creatures about which I was writing. Consequently, I decided to follow each limerick with a section called, “What’s the Scoop.” So Davis provides a piece of information about various zoo animals—from giraffes and cheetahs to chimpanzees and elephants. Later he fills in his readers about spiders, bugs and “other creeping crawlers.” His book comes with a few rules about reading limericks, like: You must read a limerick aloud. Reading silently is not allowed. But beware, you might chuckle So hard you could buckle So never read in a large crowd. And so the reader gets the scoop on farm animals, insects and even pets like dogs, cats, parrots and fish. Davis, 68, and his wife Nancy have lived in Fountain Valley for 28 years. They have three grown children: Melissa, 40, who lives in South Korea; Beth, 30, who works for a professional recruiting firm in Irvine; and Matthew, 28, who has lived in China for the past three years. Fountain Valley resident Pat O’Donnell spent decades covering presidential visits to Orange County as a news photographer for the Orange Coast Daily Pilot and later as a Cal State Fullerton faculty member. He covered President Reagan’s re-election campaign in 1984 when Reagan came to Mile Square Park, accompanied by his wife Nancy, who passed away March 6 at the age of 94.

The Reagans came to Fountain Valley for the Labor Day event because of the county’s strong support for conservative candidates. O’Donnell was photographing the event for the Orange Coast Daily Pilot at the time, and his photos capture a few other luminaries who attended, including then-Gov. George Deukmejian and Orange County Supervisor Bruce Nestande, as well as the Reagans’ daughter Maureen.

FVHS ‘The Voice’ winner loves performing on stage By KRISTIE-VALERIE HOANG Fountain Valley Living Magazine

This year’s winner of Fountain Valley High School’s “The Voice” competition is sophomore Tricia Tran.

ricia Tran says she’s happiest when she is performing on stage. “I feel amazing because singing on stage is the one way I can connect with people,” the Fountain Valley High School sophomore said. “I feel completely at home and that’s a beautiful feeling.” An even more beautiful fact is that Tran emerged the 2016 winner of “The Voice,” the school’s annual singing competition hosted by the FVHS choir in early March. Tran’s win is underscored by her infectious energy, powerful voice, and strong onstage confidence. A self-taught singer, Tran said she was encouraged to sing by her family. She didn’t start singing with a choir until she was in the sixth grade when she joined the Fountain Valley Middle School Singers. Once Tran reached high school, she began training under Vocal Music Director Kevin Tison. “I didn’t just learn about vocal techniques, I learned about what it means to be a part of the Vocal Music program and what it means to have passion and heart,” Tran said. In addition to joining the FVHS Choir as a freshman, Tran performed in numerous school talent shows—including the Key Club Talent Show, which she also won. “Winning that talent show really boosted my confidence and set me up for competing in the [2015] Friday Night Live Talent Show and the first Voice of Fountain Valley,” she said. She won the 2016 Friday Night Live show earlier this year, incidentally. “I sing because it makes me feel alive and whole. What I really love is that when I sing, I feel like people really understand me,” Tran said. “I’m not too good with words so one way I’ve worked around that is to put my emotions into my singing instead.”

Denim and Diamonds, the sixth annual Fit & Fabulous Fashion Show, staged Feb. 29 at the Center at Founders Village, once again was a huge success. Eight senior models—Joyce Conrad, Michelle Judson, Barbara Montz, Evelyn Ritchie, Monica Delanty, Liz Lucero, Leslie Montz and Marilyn Walker—modeled the latest styles from Chicos during the afternoon luncheon. Beth Hambleton from Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center, was mistress of ceremonies. Water restrictions extended through October Fountain Valley residents and businesses have played an integral part in helping the city save a total of 526 million gallons of water and achieve a 21 percent reduction in water consumption over the 9-month period from June 1, 2015 to Feb. 29, 2016 (as compared to 2013). On the downside, the city’s monthly totals for November (17 percent), December (15 percent), January (18 percent) and February (9 percent) respectively are well below the city’s state-mandated conservation goal. As reported in the Sacramento Bee, “The El Niño everyone was counting on to bail California out of the drought that has lingered for four years appears to have wimped out after a January just wet enough to get our hopes up.” The state’s urban water districts have been unable to meet their conservation

mandates for four straight months. The state fell below the 25 percent reduction mandated by Gov. Jerry Brown triggering an extension of the state’s drought regulations through October. “Fountain Valley needs to continue to do its part to conserve water,” said Fountain Valley Public Works Director Mark Lewis. “Now, more than ever, everyone needs to dig deep and get back into the conservation mindset that successfully pulled the city through the past nine months.” According to the state Water Resources Control Board’s chair, Felicia Marcus, the drought and its impacts will remain with Californians for some time. Youth of the Year award in more than 15 years, according to Christina Sepulveda, Vice President of Programs and Services at the Garden Grove Boys & Girls Clubs. “Esmerelda has been an outstanding role model at Los Amigos and we are so proud of her for earning this exciting recognition,” said Los Amigos High School Principal Vicki Braddock. The Youth of the Year award has been the premier recognition program of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America since 1947. The award recognizes club members who demonstrate leadership and service, academic excellence and healthy lifestyles. “The Orange County Youth of the Year award is one of my biggest accomplishments,” Talavera said. “My family is very proud of me and I am proud of myself.” As part of the program, Talavera created a platform about the impact the

Boys & Girls Club made on her life and interviewed in front of executives from Disney, Taco Bell, University of Phoenix, and Toyota. Talavera will go on to compete against other Boys & Girls Club members for the California Youth of the Year title and a $5,000 college scholarship from Boys & Girls Clubs of America. She will compete in Palo Alto in April and represent Orange County among 10 Boys & Girls Club Councils from across the state. “Boys & Girls Club gave me a home where I felt comfortable and safe surrounded by people who were kind and who encouraged me to become a better person every day,” Talavera said. The Garden Grove Unified School District serves most of Garden Grove and portions of Santa Ana, Anaheim, Westminster, Cypress, Stanton and Fountain Valley.

A move up the Scouting ladder

Fountain Valley Cub Scout Pack 567 held its annual Blue & Gold Banquet Feb. 20 at Surf City United Methodist Church in Huntington Beach. The Scouts received the highest rank a Cub Scout can earn—the Arrow of Light, bestowed by their Cub Master, Chris Lowery. The Scouts’ journey was complete when they were then accepted by Assistant Scout Master Joe Mundi and fellow scouts into Boy Scout Troop 412 of Fountain Valley. Family, friends, leaders, and teachers were among those in attendance to honor and celebrate the Scouts’ achievements. In addition to fulfilling 20 requirements and electives for the Arrow of Light Award, all seven scouts also earned the Religious Emblem for their faith and the Outdoor Ethics Awareness Award. Arrow of Light den leader Tai Nguyen recognized the strong support

fer a free tree to homeowners who did not have a parkway tree. Hank and his team of volunteers met at Fire Station 2 on Newhope Street and then headed out to two neighborhoods nearby. In addition to the 29 trees they planted, Hank raised enough money to donate four trees to both Ellis and Plavan parks. Those trees were planted during two separate Arbor Day events on March 10. Students from Shoreline Christian School participated in the first event of the day at Ellis Park. In the afternoon, parents and students from Hilltop Preschool gathered for the second event at Plavan Park. City officials wished Hank luck and thanked him for his “generous contribution to the community.” Hank is the son of JoJo and Mike Caprini.

He’s making a difference Saluting our sewer and storm drain supervisor, Cal Youngberg By CHERYL BROTHERS Mayor, Fountain Valley

Mayor’s Column

At our March 14 City Council meeting I had the honor of presenting my Mayor’s Award of Excellence to Cal Youngberg. Cal is the sewer and storm drain supervisor in the city’s Public Works Department. MAYOR CHERYL BROTHERS The Mayor’s Award was created to recognize employees who have made exceptional contributions to the organization. Cal has worked for the city for nine years and is being recognized for his exceptional performance, innovation and leadership. In his role as the sewer and storm drain supervisor, Cal has consistently

demonstrated exemplary service while always maintaining a positive attitude. Over the last several years, the city has not had any sanitary sewer overflows, an achievement not many other agencies can claim. This can be directly attributed to Cal’s

dedication and commitment to providing a proactive maintenance approach in both sewer and storm drain systems. Additionally, Cal has worked on numerous productive initiatives that have been instrumental to the operations in sewers and storm drains since he began

with the city. Two of his major initiatives have been successfully bringing Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) inspection services of the sewer and storm drain systems and sewer pipe spot lining in-house, utilizing his existing staff resources. CCTV inspections are used to analyze the interior structure of the pipe walls and determine where maintenance or repairs need to be made. By using a spot lining tool, repairs can be made by inserting a liner in the pipe to retain the structural integrity of the pipe. Previously, those services were contracted out. Bringing them in-house has resulted in a cost savings for the city of more than $300,000 in the first year alone. Cal is an excellent team leader who is respected by all of his co-workers. This has been achieved by supporting his team closely while enabling them to work independently, leading to high morale. His efforts have a direct impact on our community, and the residents of Fountain Valley have all benefitted from having such a selfless, ambitious supervisor overseeing our sewer and storm drain systems. Congratulations, Cal. You have my sincere appreciation for what you do for Fountain Valley. ■

in Northern California it didn’t take but a minute for wife Peggy to agree to the move. Their Tiburon townhouse on Bryce Court, south of Talbert Avenue and east of Brookhurst Street, with three bedrooms, 2.5 baths and two-car garage is almost ready for the market. It will be listed for just under $500,000. Arizona is becoming something of a California suburb as Golden State retirees, young families and workers move next door in search of cheaper housing, and well-paying jobs. According to the Wall Street Journal (Feb. 19, 2016), in 2014 alone 22,000 Californians relocated to Arizona—more than the number of newcomers from all other states combined. Nearly 600,000 Californians wound up in Texas, while about 348,000 Texans moved to California, reports the Washington Times. The other top net recipients of Californians were Nevada, Oregon and Washington. Even so, California has seen its population increase, thanks largely to an influx of foreign born immigrants. This week 38 Fountain Valley homeowners have their properties listed for sale in the Multiple Listing Service. The list prices range from $300,000 for a Los Caballeros condo to $1,400,000 for a single-family home of 1,500 square feet of living space on an oversized lot of 16,000

square feet, south of Warner Avenue and west of Ward Street. The average monthly rent in Fountain Valley has increased $56 to $1,705. for a one- bedroom unit and $32 for a two-bedroom unit, now averaging $1,900 a month. Miriam Horn of Star Real Estate is currently leasing units in the Tiburon townhouse community, east of Brookhurst Street and south of Talbert Avenue. She received multiple applications within hours of advertising two, three-bedroom units at $2,300. Miriam reports that some units have already rented for as much as $2,600. Interest rates are still under 5 percent making a home purchase more feasible than renting for some. If you’re considering a move to Orange County, Fountain Valley offers a wide selection of homes, top notch schools, a diverse business community and friendly, welcoming neighbors.

TAKING CHARGE FVHS names Justin Schaeffer head football coach By CURT SEEDEN Fountain Valley Living Magazine

ountain Valley High School’s new head varsity football coach left his mark on the football world in the Murrieta-Temecula area. Justin Schaeffer, who for the past seven years has coached Murrieta Mesa High School, was the clear choice among 40 applicants for the position, JUSTIN SCHAEFFER Principal Morgan Smith said. Murrieta Mesa is a member of the

tough Southwestern League in the CIF West Valley Division. Schaeffer has been a high school and college coach for more than 21 years, including the last seven as the founding coach of Murrieta Mesa. His experience also includes seven years as a defensive assistant coach and defensive coordinator at Southwestern Community College and seven years as a defensive assistant coach and defensive coordinator at Hilltop High School, his alma mater. Schaeffer was a three-sport athlete in football, wrestling and track and field at Hilltop, graduating in 1992. He attended Southwestern College and played cornerback for the Apaches. Schaeffer replaces Ray Fenton, who resigned in January to become head coach at Los Alamitos High School. Fenton compiled a 19-13 record during his 3 years coaching the Barons varsity football team. Schaeffer is a firm believer in the multi-sport athlete, is well known for having placed many student-athletes into college playing opportunities over the years. “It was clear from the start of our process that Coach Schaeffer embodied all the qualities we were looking for in our next head coach,” Principal Smith said. “We’re looking forward to the outstanding leadership he will provide and develop in our student-athletes.” Added Steve Eggert, co-athletic director at FVHS: “We are absolutely thrilled that Justin has decided to join the Baron family. His experience, personality, temperament and energy are what we are looking for in the next man to lead Baron football, and we welcome Justin and his family to the Baron community.”

God’s wink By STEVE SCHULTZ Fountain Valley Living Magazine

Difference Makers

L

ast month Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity was fully proven a century after it was penned when scientists detected gravitational waves from two black holes colliding. The more you study physics, the more you understand that everything is made of vibrating STEVE SCHULTZ waves of energy. Einstein said, “A person can look at the universe in one of two ways: that nothing is a miracle or that everything is a miracle.” Or put differently, everything is random, or nothing is random. We know that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. That an object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion unless another object interacts with it. Our thoughts send vibrations into the universe and put things in motion. Prayer causes the universe to move. Have you ever been thinking about someone you miss and shortly thereafter that someone called you out of the blue? As Paulo Coelho puts it in his book,. The Alchemist, “The universe is conspiring with you.” The more in tune you become with the movement of the universe, the more visible God becomes to you. Those “random” moments when something

you were praying about comes to you is really God revealing Himself. I call it “God’s Wink.” Once on a drive home I was praying, sending out vibrations of gratitude to God for bringing the author Wayne Dyer’s words into my life shortly after he died. There was major roadwork being done and I was sent on a detour and just as I finished this prayer, not knowing where this road was taking me, I spotted a sign that said Dyer Industries. You could look at this as random or the miracle of the universe in action. I see it as God winking to me, acknowledging my vibrations of gratitude. Then there was the time I visited the crash site of a student who died and I prayed for a sign letting me know that we honored him the right way. As I sat on the side of the road, a ladybug flew down right next to me and stayed there with me for the longest time. I had written in his obituary that “his soul was so pure a lady bug was safe to land

Fountain Valley Living Magazine

on him.” It was God’s wink answering my prayer, that yes, all is good; you’re doing the right thing. Just last month after some doubt began to creep in, I had been praying every day for about two weeks for God to give me a sign that the universe is not random, but that love governs all. I specifically kept praying, “God show me a sign that there is a hand behind the curtain and that we are not alone on this stage called Earth.” A few weeks ago, I “randomly” received an email from someone I had never met. Her name is Shea Lee Knowles and she is a Fountain Valley resident. She contacted me to tell me how much she loves my monthly column in the magazine and how my article called “The Masterpiece” about how we must work each day to make God visible to others by how we lead our lives, inspired her to create a painting. She sent me a photo of the painting and I almost fell out of my chair when I saw it.

She painted a curtain with a hand revealing itself from behind the curtain with a butterfly in the palm of the hand. God sure is funny. I had been praying to God that He send me a sign that there really was a “hand behind the curtain” and that we were a piece of His love walking, and what does God do? God winks back at me by literally sending me a painting of a curtain with a hand coming from behind the scenes— as if to say, “Why would you ever doubt me, child? Of course I’m here. Everything is going to be alright. It’s all good. I’ve got you in the palm of my hand. Keep flying. Don’t let them clip your wings. You know who you are. I’m with you. We are one and you are loved.” The butterfly was significant to me because the butterfly is my favorite metaphor in nature. I have written about how most people spend their whole lives as caterpillars (the ego of man), never realizing they are really butterflies (children of all loving God) and the metamorphosis only takes place once you become like the love you come from. Becoming love gives you wings. Maybe you’ll say that was just random—that it was no miracle at all—just a coincidence. I’ll remind you that Wayne Dyer said, “There are no coincidences,” and how Einstein concluded that nothing is random. Doors don’t open unless you knock. When you ask the universe for something, expect a response. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Look for the ladybugs; be open to the wonder of it all. And every time you see God winking at you, smile, wink back, and say, “I love you, too, God. Thank you.” Wink.

Hey Fountain Valley, get out and volunteer Difference Makers

‘Community Service 2016’ set for April 23-24 By CURT SEEDEN Fountain Valley Living Magazine

T

his month, more than 1,000 community members will set aside a weekend to spruce up parts of Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley and reach out to the homeless and people in need. Community Service 2016 is scheduled for April 23-24 and is sponsored by the Greater Huntington Beach Interfaith Council. This is a weekend of community service in which volunteers work together to improve parks, historical sites, nature centers, and beaches throughout the communities. It’s an opportunity for organizations and individuals to lend a helping hand, whether it be repairing playground equipment, planting shrubs at parks or mulching a senior citizen’s yard. This year’s event will include a Homeless Fair, canned food drive and a stop hunger campaign. Fountain Valley resident Anita Chandler, broker of Chandler Properties, is chairing the Stop Hunger Now campaign. Greater Huntington Beach Interfaith Council volunteers will be packaging meals on April 23 at Sowers Middle School. The meals cost 29 cents to prepare, and the Stop Hunger Now campaign needs to reach its $3,000 goal in the coming weeks to pay for the meals. To donate go to stophungernow.org. 42
