Meet Addie Phan.

She's in 8th grade at Masuda, is the elected ASB president, and was just named as one of the Students of the Year.

Her principal said Addie Phan brought normalcy back to Masuda Middle School after COVID. The 13-year-old, who finds motivation from her parents and accomplished friends, has taken a challenging school year and focused on the social needs of her fellow students.

ddie Phan will tell you she knows the importance of pacing oneself. The high-achieving eighth grader currently serves as the elected Masuda Middle School ASB president, leading a team of 20 fellow students in planning numerous campus activities . . . all while maintaining top grades, quality friendships and piano lessons. She plays video games to unwind. “Take breaks, because you might not be able to take them in the future,” she suggests. In March, her principal announced Addie had been chosen as one of the Students of the Year, surprising Addie with a bouquet of balloons during second period class. Addie is the daughter of Le Phan and Janice Vuong and admits her parents “are pretty awesome.”

Fountain Valley Living Magazine

Listening to Addie Phan is not like listening to a 13-year-old teen. The well-spoken eighth-grader is far beyond her years, both in her public presentation and in her outlook on life. During this school year, Addie and her board have staged a school dance, created campus fundraisers to pay for the dance and pep rallies, and she herself has given the daily campus announcements over the school's public address system. ASB was difficult because of COVID, Addie said. “I wanted to create a morelively school. COVID shut everyone down. Social interaction was something I wanted to start doing . . . I missed being in person. We've been able to a lot of events this year.”

Her advice to her fellow students: “Acknowledge when you're not feeling that great . . . Reach out to any of your friends—they're there to listen.” Principal Morgan gave high praise for Addie, calling her poised and well-spoken. “With Addie's help and leadership, we were able to bring some normalcy back to Masuda and make this year memorable,” Morgan said. “She is such a breath of fresh air, coming into the office every day to do announcemtns with a positive attitude and a smile.” Masuda's ASB advisor, teacher Smantha Ayalde, also lauded her. “As ASB president, she has been determined to make a difference on campus and make this year one of the best year's we've seen at Masuda.” she said. “Addie is constantly coming up with new ideas to get students involved, and new activ-

ities that we can bring to campus. She is always first to volunteer for anything and is never afraid of having all eyes on her.” What motivates Addie? Looking back at last spring’s student body elections, she said she was motivated to run for ASB president as she saw her friends being so accomplished in academics, athletics and leadership. “A lot of my friends are very incredible people,” Addie said. “I don't want to be that kind of friend who is constantly competing, but I wanted to be seen as just

as accomplished as the people I hang out with. I’d say I’m goal oriented.” Her advice to students on seeking election: “If you think you want to try it out, go for it. You’ll have a great time.” As to life balance, she equally savors the Arts, challenging herself with piano pieces from Chopin and Debussy. She enjoys R’n’B and Soul, following Asian artists, and teaching herself additional instruments. She even reads comic books: “I appreciate the level of thought and art that goes into them.” Addie’s primary goal, though, is to study well so she can go to medical school and become a doctor. “I've always been very intrigued by the human body and how it functions. Maybe if I become a doctor, I can help a lot of people.” We look forward to calling you “Dr. Phan” someday, Addie.

Fountain Valley’s got talent!

Summerfest Community Stage expanded to showcase local performers

By CURT SEEDEN Fountain Valley Living Magazine

his year’s Summerfest will once again serve up an array of fun for people of all ages—plenty of amusement rides, a lineup of popular tribute bands performing on the Main Stage, lots of food favorites, game booths and a beer and wine garden, among other attractions. Gaining popularity with each year, the Summerfest Community Stage has been expanded—it’s roughly the same size as the Main Stage—and will feature a variety of local talent. “The Summerfest Community Stage has showcased the talents of our local community members for several years,” said Liana Taylor, the Summerfest Community Stage coordinator. “Most of our performers are young people from the local schools and programs in the area.“ Summerfest is set for June 16-19 at the Fountain Valley Sports Park. Already, the lineup of Community Stage talent is growing. There are still a few performance time slots available. These are the performers who have signed up as of this writing:

ven though he lives in Fountain Valley, Rocky McKinnon can be found at the Huntington Beach Pier most days. Rocky is an official surf lesson vendor for the city of Huntington Beach as well as a competitive longboarder, stand up paddle (SUP) surfer, tandem surfer and canoe surfer. He’s also a successful surfboard shaper and owner of McKinnon Shapes & Designs and McKinnon Surf & SUP Lessons. Known as the “Waterman,” Rocky volunteers and shares his skills with non-profit groups that provide surf days for people with special needs. His innate understanding of waves, ocean current, and even physics have provided exhilarating experiences for hundreds of participants with the Ride A Wave Foundation, Best Day Foundation and Wounded Warriors, among others. His outreach efforts also include Operation Amped, whose mission is to share the “stoke” of the surfing community and the healing potential of surfing with seriously ill, injured, and disabled U.S. military veterans and their families. He has also created the “chair board,” which allows wheelchair-bound people to sit upright while catching waves, as DSBwhile Rocky steers the 14-foot board Photo by LYNN SEEDEN standing behind the seat. dream by creating the first-ever adaptive surfing program as part of his McKinnon Surf & SUP Lessons. The city of Huntington Beach recently approved his use of the chair board at the pier. “I got into volunteering and created my own adaptive surfing program . . . making it possible for the special needs community to have access to surfing,” he said. Rocky has also introduced the “Bold As Love” outrigger surf canoe experience, which gives the public an opportunity to participate in this Hawaiian tradition for free. Huntington Beach has granted him permission to take his outrigger out next to the pier multiple

times each year. The Kiwanis Club of Huntington Beach recently donated a special beach wheelchair to Rocky’s adaptive surfing program. Having this specialized equipment opens the program to more and more people with disabilities. During a recent Huntington Beach Airshow, Rocky gave surf lessons to the wives of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbird pilots. “Sharing my passion of the ocean and riding waves with others, especially those that might not have thought it possible, has been very rewarding to me and the participants,” he said. “I definitely feel I have found my purpose.” www.FountainValleyMagazine.net

Freddie Freeman is returning to his roots. Freeman, who was born in Fountain Valley and grew up in Orange, signed a reported 6-year $162 million contract on March 17 to play for the Los Angeles Dodgers. A free agent after leading the Atlanta Braves to a World Series championship last year, Freeman attended El Modena High School, where he was a third baseman and a pitcher. As a senior in 2007, Freeman had a .417 batting average and was 6-1 as a pitcher. He signed a letter of intent with California State University, Fullerton to play college baseball. However, the Braves selected Freeman in the second round -- the 78th overall selection -- of the 2007 Major League Baseball draft. Freeman signed with the Braves, forgoing his college scholarship. Eight Pack 567 Cub Scouts achieve Arrow of Light

Fountain Valley Cub Scout Pack 567 held its annual Blue & Gold banquet on Feb. 5 at The Fount United Methodist Church in Fountain Valley. All eight Scouts received the highest rank a Cub Scout can earn—Arrow of Light, bestowed upon them by their Cubmaster, Dave Breiter. The Scouts’ journey was complete when they were then accepted by Scouts of America Boy & Girl Troop 567. Scoutmasters Mark Smilor and Scott Avent and their Scouts welcomed the continuing Scouts into the Fountain Valley troop. Family, friends and mentors were among those in attendance to honor and celebrate the Scouts’ achievements. The composition of those in attendance reflected the essence of the scouts’ years of successes—a community of involved adults who shaped years of positive scouting experiences for the Pack. Arrow of Light Scouts were led through their rank requirements and electives by their adult leaders: Boys’ Leader Tiffany Cassity, Assistant Leader Jeanne Langford, Girls’ Leader Dave Breiter and Assistant Leader Aimie Woods. Tiffany Cassity led the boys patrol through their ranks for six years. Over the last two years, she also coordinated the girls patrol so the two groups could seamlessly participate alongside one another. “Pack 567 is extremely proud of all the Scouts’ accomplishments, their resilience and their overall genuine camaraderie and compassion toward one another,” said Assistant Leader Aimee Woods. “These scouts embodied the motto of ‘do your best’ and will certainly enrich their surrounding Fountain Valley community for years to come.” 18

Do you bloom where you are planted? By SUSAN SAURASTRI Seven Gables Real Estate

Spring is a time of rejuvenation and renewal. Caterpillars to butterflies, plants to colorful blooms and longer, warmer days. If the calls I receive are any indication, spring is also a time of new beginnings— whether it’s SUSAN SAURASTRI a job transfer out of state or a need for less or more space. Change is in the air. Are you blooming where you are planted? Does your environment give you joy? Think about how your home provides you with a warm, dry, safe place to thrive and flourish. It’s your private oasis, a shelter from life’s daily challenges. As we age, so do our homes. A little “lipstick” goes a long way in perking us up. It can do the same for our homes. Most Fountain Valley homes were built in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Fifty years creates a lot of wear and tear. Take inventory and make a list of deferred maintenance items. Start at the curb. Last year, a Fountain Valley neighbor recommended his company to replace our front yard with artificial grass.

22

APRIL 2022

Fountain Valley Living Magazine

In a matter of hours, they removed the sprinkler system, leveled out the ground, and laid a new, no-maintenance lawn. We love it. The cost was $3,000. There are many grades of quality, so if you’re thinking of replacing your lawn, choose carefully. Perennial plants and flowers bloom every year and can do wonders to add color and enhance your curb appeal. Window boxes with a variety of color add cheer and inviting appeal to a home’s exterior. So do window shutters. Let’s talk paint. If you want to add some pop to your curb appeal, paint the front door. Red, black, navy, teal, or yellow can add dramatic appeal. Take some photos of your home and consult with the experts at the neighborhood paint store. When was the last time you took inventory of your home’s basic functions? When all systems are a go, we tend to take the mechanics for granted. How old is your furnace? Does the filter need changing? Do you have central air conditioning? Determine if it’s operational now before you need it in summer. Do you use your clothes dryer at least once a week, maybe more? We live in the Old Farm tract, west of Bushard Street and south of Slater Avenue. Our house was built in 1965. We’ve lived in our current home for 19 years. Last month, we

hired a local professional to clean out the duct work and the dryer hose that extends from the garage to the exterior. Although we empty the lint basket with every load of laundry, the hose contained quite a bit of lint, a fire hazard. Did you know that the California Civil Code requires your water heater to be double strapped and braced to the wall? It’s a fact. Have you checked the temperature on your water heater recently? Also required are smoke detectors in each bedroom, and the hall, with 10-year batteries and one carbon monoxide detector on each level of the home. Last year, a home in Queens, New York exploded. The cause was a build-up of carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is clear, odorless and deadly. Protect yourself and your loved ones. Test your carbon monoxide and your smoke detectors periodically. While we’re discussing home safety, do you have a fire extinguisher in or near the kitchen? How old is it? Will it be effective when put to use? A thorough professional home AGENT LOGO | BRANDING

inspection will cost you about $385 and provide you with a 50-plus page report within 24 hours. The report will contain photographs and will note the health and safety items that should be addressed. Take care of your home and it will take care of you. A little lipstick can improve the look and feel of your surroundings, and the results will make you smile. We can all use more of that. Need a handyman, contractor, inspector or painter? I can refer you. Email or text me. My email is Susan@ FountainValleyLiving.com.

Chamber membership is a wise business strategy By BRIAN GENOVESE President, Fountain Valley Chamber of Commerce

Something you may not realize is that the Chamber of Commerce is not a “one-size-fits-all” type of organization. Here are the top reasons for joining: BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS AT CHAMBER EVENTS We all know that a lot of successful business is done outside of those four walls of your office. Relationships are built playing in a foursome at a golf tournament, gathering with friends and co-workers at after-hours events, and mingling with other like-minded professionals at conferences. Are you attending events with the same group or going solo and trying to make other connections? The businesspeople you get to know at these functions could become lasting relationships that may pay off years from now. So, attend events, sign up to sit on a committee, interact with people outside your normal realm and you may be creating relationship-building skills that can cross over to improve non-business aspects of your life as well. BRIAN GENOVESE

MARKETING YOUR BUSINESS The Fountain Valley Chamber of Commerce offers various marketing and sponsorship opportunities at different levels. Maybe your business is interested in sponsoring a program for an entire year or a single event to make your company more visible to the community? A business with limited funds may utilize a free post to the chamber’s social media accounts, take the opportunity to add your events to the chamber’s online calendar, or offer a member-to-member benefit or a coupon on the chamber’s website. ONGOING TRAINING & EDUCATION For companies that do not have a large training budget getting to national conferences or bringing in experts may be out of the question. It possible that the FV Chamber can provide an inexpensive way to bridge the gap between no training and topic-expert training. There may not be better organizations at providing relevant speakers and trainers than your FV Chamber of Commerce. Being active in the chamber of commerce is an effective business strategy. Two thirds of consumers believe chamber member businesses use good business practices, are reputable, care about their customers, and are community oriented. Jane Kamenster 9765 Red River Circle Open Saturday only Designed around the idea that gardens are an extension of living space, the garden wraps around the house. There are two front rose gardens, a public one behind a rose arbor, and a private one tucked behind a custom wrought-iron gate. The house’s library opens to the “Library Garden,” with a koi pond, rose-filled parterres and fruit trees. ■ Info: www.heardsgardentour.com. www.FountainValleyMagazine.net

Opening Day!

Fountain Valley Little League held its 2022 opening day ceremonies March 5 at the Fountain Valley Sports Park. Festivities included a parade of teams, games and the introduction of, from left, Mayor Patrick Harper and City Council members Glenn Grandis, Ted Bui and Kim Constantine (pictured with league president Erik Duffy, center). Also pictured, the Minor C Cubs and Coach Tim Ankeny pose for photos. This year, the league boasts 31 teams and 344 players. League officials said it’s the most players they’ve had in 10 years. This year, fields have been upgraded with new fencing and bullpens.
