ike most of you, we are anxious to see what May and beyond looks like as we all do our best to weather the COVID-19 pandemic. And in true Fountain Valley spirit, this community has been at its best under these trying circumstances. We want to thank all of those organizations, individuals and first responders who have stepped up for others. Case in point: The Fountain Valley Community Foundation. Foundation volunteers made phone calls to hundreds of seniors in the city to check on their needs. Senior care packages were collected and distributed by the Foundation in collaboration with the Fountain Valley Fire Department’s PREP program. Additionally, the Foundation raised funds for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley to help provide childcare for MemorialCare Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center employees. TOGETHER WE WILL RISE ABOVE THESE TOUGH TIMES These past few weeks have been hard for us all and life as we know it has paused for a moment as we handle one of the biggest challenges in our lifetimes. As many continue to fight for those we love, we all play a part in realizing that right now minutes are precious and every day matters. In response to COVID-19 and in an effort to help the medical community, Hyundai and Hyundai Hope On Wheels is donating $2.2 Million to children’s hospitals across the U.S. to help further fund testing centers. Among these hospitals is our local and long-time partner, the Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC). As a global company, we hope to aid as many people as possible, but we understand that the biggest change you can make is to those around you. Fountain Valley is our home and we must continue to pull together as neighbors and a community to support people with the most need. Even though we cannot physically be together, it will be through our teamwork that our community will thrive.

Finding Purpose During a

Pandemic

Fountain Valley Scout’s ambitious project designed to help reduce our stress while cleaning up our communities

By CURT SEEDEN Fountain Valley Living Magazine

N

ow, more than ever, people need a purpose, Fountain Valley Boy Scout John-Aaron Bozanic believes. “As a nation, we are experiencing what I perceive to be the most widespread and debilitating event to impact our country during my lifetime . . . the COVID-19 pandemic, and associated quarantine,” the 18-year-old Eagle Scout said. “We cannot directly do anything about the virus, or its spread. Apart from handwashing recommendations and limiting contact with others, our options are limited,” Bozanic said. “But we can still promote mental health in this stressful time, by providing a purpose to the youth and adults in our country.” So in April, Bozanic coordinated a project titled 1,000,000 Pieces of Trash. “Pollution and ecological health are a continuing challenge facing mankind. We have a unique opportunity to improve this. While large meetings are eschewed, while many people are idle because of school or business closures, 4 MAY 2020

Participants were invited to log their progress online and share photos and stories about their experiences. John-Aaron attended Ethan Allen Elementary School, Tarbut V’Torah Community Day School in Irvine and graduated from La Quinta. He is the son of Jeffrey Bozanic, a scuba instructor and research scientist, and Rebekah Halpern, a physician assistant, NICU, Long Beach Memorial Hospital. He has a brother, Evan, 22, a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas; and a sister, Taleah Bozanic, 16, a sophomore at Tarbut V’Torah Community Day School, who is a Star Scout and a competitive ice skater. “I do what I do because I really like to give back,” Bozanic said. “I’ve received so much through scouting.”

Bozanic's Scouting accomplishments

Completing major goals and extensive projects is not new to John-Aaron Bozanic. Here are some of his accomplishments: ► Eagle Scout (2016) with 13 palms (a palm may be earned for each additional five merit badges, and three months of service in Scouting). ► 87 merit badges. ► World Conservation Award (2018). ► National Outdoor Award Medal (2019): The medal is earned for significant experience and training in six areas of outdoor skills and competencies, amounting to hundreds of nights of camping, hundreds of miles of hiking, and hundreds of hours of conservation service projects. ► High Adventure Team John Muir Medal (2016): For hiking the entire John Muir Trail. ► Jim Hawkins Medal (2019): Awarded for cumulative participation in backcountry

excursions, conservation service, and peak climbing. ► Order of the Arrow Vigil Honor (2017): The Order of the Arrow is the national honor society of the Boy Scouts of America. The Vigil Honor is the highest honor that the Order of the Arrow can bestow upon its members. Less than 1 percent of Scouts ever attain this. ► Area Venturing Leadership Award (2019): This is the highest award a Venturing Scout (ages 14-20) can receive for leadership and service in this area, which includes most of Southern California and the Eastern Sierras. ► Hornaday Award (2018, 2019): National conservation award. John-Aaron just finished his third of four projects. Projects included building an outdoor education center at Moulton Elementary School (2018); conducting a lionfish hunt in the Florida Keys (2019); and trail reconstruction at the outdoor education center (2020), approval pending.

Tax return reminder:

ity un m m Co

Under the new C.A.R.E.S. Act there is a provision that will help anyone in need of some cash by allowing people, even under the age of 59½, to withdraw up to $100,000 without incurring a 10% premature penalty from their retirement account. This provision allows for anyone to pay the tax on this distribution over a three-year period. However, if you choose to repay the distribution over this period of time, it will be treated as a loan similar to the 60-day rollover and thus will not be taxable.

On the other hand, there are Required Minimum Distribution rules that have been suspended for those that would otherwise have to take a distribution from their retirement account. Since most of you have incurred unrealized losses in your stock portfolios in the recent months, if you can afford not to take the distribution it would be wise for you to allow the money to stay in the account and have a chance to rebound. This will ultimately provide you with a much greater distribution in future years.

Deadline moved to July 15 Do I, or don’t I, take a distribution from my retirement account?

Its mission is to provide an opportunity for the public to enjoy the efforts and hard work of local gardeners and their residential landscapes. The tour, originally planned for the weekend of May 2-3, will be rescheduled for four weeks after officials give an allclear date for activities to resume but no later than June 26-27, officials said.

FV lauded for its financially prepared retirees

Fountain Valley has earned some high marks for being home to financially prepared retirees. LendEDU recently analyzed more than 20,000 U.S. cities and ranked Fountain Valley No. 212 nationally and No. 71 in California with an average household income from retirement of $30,789. To be considered for this ranking, a city had to have a minimum of 4,000 households with retirement income.

Braces

Each city was ranked according to its average household income from retirement. “Folks that have worked to make their money and invested it in their 401(k)s or other retirement accounts are the ones that will get to enjoy the fruits of their labor during retirement,” the LendEDU report noted. City celebrates Arbor Day with tree planting

More than 75 students from Northcutt Elementary School helped the city celebrate Arbor Day at Stonecress Park on March 12. Marco Garcia, the city’s arborist, taught the youngsters about the important role of trees in Fountain Valley. The students also pitched in to help plant six new trees in the park. Mayor Cheryl Brothers read the official Arbor Day proclamation and was accompanied by City Council members Kim Constantine, Steve Nagel and Patrick Harper. City officials extended special thanks to Northcutt Elemantary School Principal Ryan Loberger and the Garden Grove Unified School District who helped make the event possible. The tree planting event is just one of the many ways the city works with the community to build awareness of the city’s urban forest of more than 12,400 trees.

eal estate is considered an essential service ... just ask some of our Fountain Valley neighbors who are on the move. Barbara and Steve Chakos and their daughter Stephanie, son-in-law Drew, and six grandchildren loaded up their SUV and followed the moving van as it made its way to their new sprawling home in Prosper, Texas. COVID-19 prevented them from embracing their friends, family and church members with goodbye SUSAN SAURASTRI hugs. Instead, as Steve, Barbara and the gang of 10 stood on the lawn in front of their expanded and remodeled Meadow home around the corner from the library, car horns honked, banners waved and loved ones cheered from their moving vehicles in a surprise parade that brought tears and laughter. Bittersweet is how Barbara described their Fountain Valley departure. Family, economics and lifestyle played a role as it does in most decisions to uproot, and so it did for this family. The beneficiaries of their move are Nick and Megan and their toddler, Brooks. Megan is second generation Fountain Valley and is grateful to be staying close to her parents. Their young son will get to explore his new surroundings, live near his grandparents 16 MAY 2020

and learn what the rest of us already know. Fountain Valley is a nice place to live. Robert Hoida grew up in Fountain Valley. He raised his three children here. Last month he accepted a job in Michigan. His newly painted and updated Westmont home north of Heil Avenue and east of Magnolia Street went into escrow within a week. Mike and Laura Stephan are trading suburban living for the country life. They bought one hundred acres of land in Idaho where they plan to raise sheep. Their single-level Rancho Mesa home with a large lot and RV parking, west of Ward Street, will debut in early May. The long-term impact of the coronavirus on the real estate market is yet to be known but the short-term reality is that we in the industry are still guiding our clients through their life transitions whether their next chapter is local or in another state. Virtual tours have taken center stage as prospective homebuyers can determine if a property warrants a move from the couch to the car. Booties, gloves and masks have become the fashion rage for agents and their clients. When I meet with my selling clients, physical distancing is in play. We sit in adjacent rooms and discuss price, terms and timing. Showings are scheduled by appointment only with only one set of clients in the sanitized home at any given time. Open houses and broker previews have been suspended. Lookie-loos have been extinguished by the virus. If you see an open house sign before the ban

is lifted, you are within your rights to berate the host. How we behave is a demonstration of our character. The properties that are currently on the market are being sold by motivated sellers. Folks who are looking are serious buyers encouraged by incredibly low interest rates and their family’s immediate personal needs. Motivated sellers and encouraged homebuyers ... a perfect match. Fountain Valley's Tam Nguyen nails it with donation drives

Fountain Valley resident Tam Nguyen, who owns Advance Beauty College in Garden Grove, has joined with other nail salon businesses to step up and provide mask and glove donation drives for health workers. Nguyen and the “#NailingItForHealthCareWorkers” team of Southern California nail salons donated 30,000 masks to healthcare workers. State Sen. Tom Umberg (34th District) saluted Nguyen as an “Everyday Hero” for his efforts and the efforts of his team members. “COVID-19 hit the nail salon industry hard. But, I commend leaders like Dr. Nguyen, who despite losing so

much, are still looking at ways that they can help our frontline workers,” Umberg said in a Facebook post. “If you TAM NGUYEN would like to assist our #Everydayheroes, please drop off donations at Advance Beauty College locations, Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.,” Umberg added.

"Phoebe is a six-player rotation outside hitter with tremendous skill in the front and back row," volleyball coach Ruth McGolpin said in a VSN post. "Her demeanor on and off the court is quiet, but she has a steady and smart confidence when she plays that will make her a threat at the net." Minch's Seal Beach Volleyball Club team spent six years as an open team, finishing in the top-five in Southern California and the top 20 nationally each year, according to VSN. Westmont has made four consecutive trips to the NAIA National Tournament, a program record.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY HEALTH

Making the case for reversing Type 2 diabetes By KATHLEEN ROCKNEY Columnist

‘‘I

was in denial!” Jay Adams, busy mother of four and principal at Masuda Middle School, went to her annual medical exam this past November, soon after hearing that both of her biological parents had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Part of her realized that she also had weight gain, tingling in her feet, fatigue and sweats. But the other KATHLEEN ROCKNEY part was just sure that Type 2 diabetes was for older people. When her doctor reviewed her bloodwork and said, “Did you know you were Type 2 diabetic?” Jay was in shock. She’d never even been told she was

pre-diabetic. “I panicked at the thought of change,” she said. Her doctor sent her to a hospital-affiliated diabetic clinic where a team of four professionals started with education. The biology of how sugar affects our bodies, and where it is hidden in our diets (bread, pasta, pizza, soda), made sense. Jay immediately stopped drinking her beloved sodas and shifted to water. Yes, there were withdrawal symptoms, but she was determined. Seven pounds quickly came off. She then adjusted her diet, doing daily blood sugar pin-prick tests and trying to eat at appropriate times of the day despite her crazy busy schedule at school. Then, the COVID-19 pandemic hit the USA and California enacted “shelter in place” in mid-March. Her school closed. This added to her stress, as she worked to support her teachers and students, in

addition to her own children. But this also allowed her to better control her days. She could now eat when she was supposed to, relax a bit more, take the time to plan meals and create a daily structure that included walking. “Willpower was never an issue. I was highly motivated to beat this,” she said. Results so far? More than 35 pounds lost since January, better energy, no sugar sweats, and she is off her diabetes medications due to consistently great blood sugar readings. “It’s reversible. It’s not a life sentence when you do make the changes—and those changes can be made even during a worldwide pandemic,” she said. If you have a compelling story of combating a health issue with lifestyle changes, please contact me. Let’s share the hope! Kathleen Rockney, kathleenrockney38@ gmail.com.

Group finding RVs for at-risk frontline virus workers

Several Fountain Valley businesses have joined together to reach out to frontline workers—doctors, nurses, firefighters, paramedics and other first responders—who risk exposing their families to the COVID-19 virus. The plan: provide recreational vehicles for healthcare workers and first responders who may have been exposed to use as temporary quarantine quarters. RVs for COVID-19 was started when Steve Demko of Fountain Valley’s Fashion Graphics, a large-scale screenprint business with 150 employees, was forced to shut down because of the pandemic. Demko, in an effort to stay busy, saw stories of frontline workers who were afraid to go home because of the risk of exposing their families to the virus: The firefighter, whose 1-year old has cancer, who has been living in his car to

avoid exposing his family; The ER nurse whose elderly, immunocompromised mom lives with her. Demko found a first responder to take his almost-new RV. After doing so, he contacted a few of his friends with RVs, asking them to do the same—and an idea was born. Brian Holman, of Elvis Electric in Fountain Valley, started the Facebook group RVs for COVID-19 to further promote the idea. Demko’s longtime friend Greg Obymako also came aboard to raise money and connect people who could help. Elvis Electric has been taking care of all the administrative work behind the scenes, helping to set up matches and

make sure that electricity is being used accurately and properly when matches are made. Elvis Electric, alongside AK Constructors, have stepped up to remedy problems to make sure that the RV occupant is comfortable and doesn’t have to worry about the small things. Neighboring businesses Bartwood Construction and PW Stephens Environmental are providing cleanup and hazmat cleaning and sanitizing of the rigs. Momentum Media Solutions

T-shirt fundraiser assists local small businesses, including this magazine

helped build the group’s Facebook pages and G3 Creations designed a logo for the group. Currently the group has 20 RVs placed with first responders, with about 30 more waiting for additional RVs. More information: Go to www. rvsforcovid19.com. In the meantime, the city of Fountain Valley is temporarily allowing RVs to be used as alternative housing for first-responders and health care professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic by offering Temporary Emergency RV Permits. To obtain a Temporary Emergency RV Permit or to learn more about temporary emergency RV parking, call the Fountain Valley Police Department at (714) 5934485 or the Planning & Building Department at (714) 593-4425.

Local resident Mike Woolbright came up with an easy fundraiser to help area small businesses and nonprofits. Woolbright owns a T-shirt imprinting company, and he features a shirt on his website of a small business or nonprofit that has been affected by COVID-19. When you buy a $20 T-shirt, $10 goes directly to the small business or group. So far, he has raised $300,000 for small businesses. "We believe we can help each other. That’s why we have started the #hereforgood campaign," Woolbright wrote on his website. Fountain Valley Living Magazine has a T-Shirt ("I ♥ FV"); Seeden Photography has two T-shirts ("Seeden Photography" and "Fountain Valley"); and the FV Chamber of Commerce also has a T-shirt for sale on the website.

Your small business can also participate with your own T-shirt. Instructions and shopping are on the website. To shop: hereforgoodca.com Questions? Call Express Tees at (714) 828-8008.

Five ways to stay mentally healthy

The Center Piece, the monthly newsletter produced by the city’s Senior Services division, offers these “five ways to stay mentally healthy.”

1 2 3 4

Keep in touch: Strong family ties and supportive friends can help you deal with the current stresses of the world. Friends and family can make you feel included and cared for. They can help keep you active and keep you grounded. Brain fitness: Stimulate your brain with word puzzles and crosswords.

Healthy body, healthy mind: Physical health is just as important as mental health. Being active doesn't mean going to the gym. Gardening, dog walking, or walking around the neighborhood are all good ways to get your body moving. Ask for help: Support from friends and family is invaluable. The community is here to help, too. The Office on Aging is available to help seniors with links to food or resources during self-isolation. Call the Office on Aging Information and Assistance Call Center at (800) 5102020.

5

Eat and drink sensibly: Our body and mind need nutrients to function properly. Come to the Center at Founders Village and pick up your frozen meals on Thursdays provided by Meals on Wheels. If you need home delivered meals, you may call Meals on Wheels Orange County at (714) 220-0224 to start the signup process. There are also grocery stores participating in special hours for seniors in our community.

Serving seniors during crisis The Center at Founders Village Senior and Community Center doors are closed, but staff members are at the center answering phones and assisting residents from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Here is a recap of services currently available: The senior center, together with Meals on Wheels Orange County, offers: ■ Distribution of seven frozen meals each Thursday from 11 a.m. to noon for a “Grab and Go” set up at The Center. Seniors need to pre-register. More than 1,700 frozen meals have been distributed so far. ■ Home-delivered meals. ■ Backup frozen meals should a senior need a meal on another day besides Thursday. “We are giving out brain fitness word search, crossword, and sudoku puzzle books, and a treat each week to all the senior meals participants,” said Community Services Manager Nora Webb. “We’ve also set up a cart that has some puzzles for seniors to take home. All books and puzzles are wiped down

with disinfectant.” Senior transportation is available to those enrolled in the Hop On Senior Transportation program. Webb said the center is accepting applications even though the doors are closed. Additionally, part-time staff and Fountain Valley Community Foundation volunteers are calling on seniors for well checks. “We have handed out and mailed out pertinent information regarding the coronavirus to our senior community, as well as provided a list of stores that will allow seniors to shop early,” Webb added. The senior center, in collaboration with the Fountain Valley Community Foundation and Fountain Valley Fire Department P.R.E.P. program, are delivering care packages to seniors in the community. The care packages include educational materials, hand sanitizer, contact information, puzzles and games, treats/candy, “along with care and empathy,” Webb added.
