hat would you do if someone you didn’t know sent you a gift card and asked you to find a good use for it? That’s what happened a week before Christmas when Fountain Valley Living Magazine co-owner Alex Accetta received an anonymous hand-written letter and a $200 Macy’s gift card. The letter writer knew of Alex through his monthly full-page ad in the magazine for his business, Alex A. Accetta, CPA and Associates. The writer also knew of Alex’s fondness for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley (Alex has served on the club’s board of directors for many years and is a past president of the board). “Couldn’t help but think there are many worthy and needful candidates at the Boys & Girls Club,” the letter read. “In any event I want to place this gift card in your capable hands and ask that you give it to a worthy and meaningful individual.” The letter writer preferred to be an anonymous “Secret Santa.” If “Secret Santa” is reading this, be assured the card was delivered to a Boys and Girls Club family to make their Christmas merrier.

dward Fahman and Bryan Tran are known as Fountain Valley High School’s go-to filmmakers. Step into room 306, and you’ll find the two seniors editing the Baron Broadcast News’ (BBN) latest episode. Peak backstage during assemblies, and they are manning video equipment and chasing after compelling action shots. Check out some of their You Tube channels, and you’ll see anything from light-hearted, pop music videos to dark and eerie Halloween films. You can’t miss them: They’re always donned in signature black Adidas track pants. For them, a Canon camera is an extension of their arms. Their passion for film dates back to the eighth grade. “I’ve always been into movies,” Tran 4

said. “In fact, they’ve actually been a really influential part of my life. I grew up watching a lot of the more classic stuff, like the works of Charlie Chaplin.” Fahman and Tran’s first major film project was a reenactment of the Greek epic poem, “The Odyssey,” during their freshman year. After a huge success in both the quality of the video and their project grade, Fahman and Tran fell in love with film. Every class group project involved a video in some way. Both will tell you that film is more than just high school projects and extracurricular activities. It is a way to tell stories.“Films are so special because every person has their own, unique eye for how a scene should be shot or how something should be composed,” Fahman said. “A picture Bryan takes will look different from one I take in the same location. That way, we can learn from each other but also delve into our

Fountain Valley Living Magazine

own niches.” To Tran, film is also an integral part of preserving culture and history. “In my opinion, the medium of imaging itself is extremely important because it’s a huge part of making us who we are. An image speaks a thousand words, so a movie speaks billions,” he said. Tran and Fahman’s favorite project was a film showcasing both the eight quintessential eras of film and the seven eras of American history. “From the focus we had in planning, to the late nights we spent filming, to the hours we spent editing, everything came together just as how we envisioned in our minds. And to see it so well received, all the effort was definitely worth it,” Fahman said. In the future, Fahman and Tran may pursue careers in the film industry but each has other goals as well. Fahman wants to become an electrical engineer. Tran does not want to major in film, www.FountainValleyMagazine.com

because he believes through working, he will gain the knowledge he needs to succeed. After college, he wants to find enough funding to travel the world and create documentaries that will inspire change. No doubt, their paths to cinematic accomplishment have not been easy. Tran, especially, has faced challenges with his parents, who initially opposed his love for film. “There will always be people that will tell you something isn’t achievable because it doesn’t seem realistic to them. But if you think about it, reality is more a personal thing. In the end, as long as you love what you do and you set your mind to it, there’s no such thing as ‘unrealistic,’” he said. Added Fahman: “What truly carried Bryan and me here today, from that very first film we made, was our passion. And that is something you can’t find anywhere else but inside.”

Winter fun! Snapshots from the city’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting event at the Rec Center Photos by KRISTIE-VALERIE HOANG and LYNN SEEDEN

Oh, what fun it was!

The city’s annual Tree Lighting attracted more than 6,000 people Dec. 5 to the Fountain Valley Sports Park for an evening of entertainment, food and games and the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus. The evening culminated when Santa Claus and Mayor Cheryl Brothers threw the switch to light up the tree, which is was followed immediately by the fantastic fireworks show. The Fountain Valley Community Foundation and the Community Services Department put this popular family event on every year. Entertainment and children’s crafts were just part of the attraction to the city’s annual Tree Lighting event at the Fountain Valley Sports park on Dec. 5.

Bringing cheer, by way of hot cocoa

The Fountain Valley High School Make-A-Wish Club held its biggest fundraiser of the year in December, handing out cups of hot chocolate and baked goods to families strolling and enjoying the festive lights in the neighborhood nicknamed the “Christmas tract” near Brookhurst Street and Heil Avenue. Fountain Valley firefighter-paramedic Austin Cathey was honored with the Mayor’s Award at the Dec. 15 City Council meeting. Besides his other duties, Cathey volunteers to handle the Fire Department’s medical supply ordering. While completing that task he found several boxes of expired medications that to dispose of would normally cost the department about $3,600. Cathey worked out a deal with a local community college to donate the medications for the purpose of training paramedics. He was recognized by Mayor Cheryl Brothers for his innovation and cost-saving efforts.

Dreamers and Doers

Fountain Valley High School students Kayla Borack and Vian Nguyen have been selected to represent their school as “Disneyland Dreamers and Doers,” a program that celebrates youth who take action to improve their community, home or school. High school students from throughout Orange County were invited to share their stories of how they’re working toward a brighter tomorrow. Kayla wrote about her efforts in assisting the special needs community at her school as a peer tutor, as the president of a club called “Baron Buddies” that helps

bring all students together, and about her dream of becoming a special education teacher. From the nominated group of “Dreamers and Doers,” 60 students will be identified as “Shining Stars” and invited to attend a celebration luncheon along with family members and a representative from their school. To inspire fellow students to make their school a better place, each of these 60 students will also receive a $1,000 grant for their school, as well as a Dreamers & Doers medal of recognition. Vian and Kayla will find out next month if they’ve made it to the next level.

ing,” Hayden told us. “It was extremely important for me that I built something that meant not only something to the community, but it meant something to me. Theater has been an enormous part of my life, and I wanted to give the opportunity of performing and being on the stage to those kids who may not have gotten that chance anywhere else. Hopefully by having the stage, another young boy or girl will follow up with theater, the same way that I did.” Hayden was in Cub Scout Pack 567

Christmas in the Gazebo: 27 years of Historical Society tradition

Little Rylee Hill, 3 (well, she’s almost 4), came with a really really long wish list for Santa this year. Last year, she wasn’t too sure about him. This year she was ready for him.

About 300 people got in to the holiday spirit Dec. 12 at the Fountain Valley Historical Society’s 27th annual Christmas in the Gazebo at Heritage Park next to the library. The afternoon featured holiday entertainment, caroling with King of Glory’s Pastor Kinndlee Lund and her husband Josh Baesler, lots of cookies, hot cocoa, a deejay (John Borack) and a magician (Hayden Allcorn). It culminated with the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus (Tony and Susan Weaver) in the Fountain Valley Bodyworks signature red wagon. Coastal Community Church was on hand offering crafts and activities tables for the children.

Clark Hedrick, a young student at Fulton Middle School, waited in line for 20 minutes to show Santa his report card — nearly straight A’s. Former Mayor Larry Crandall took this photo of him for the magazine.

Chamber to host State of the City luncheon Jan. 26 By MARY PARSONS CEO, FV Chamber of Commerce

H

appy New Year from the Fountain Valley Chamber of Commerce. We hope that your holidays were enjoyable, and we’re all looking forward to an exciting and prosperous New Year. Each year the Fountain Valley Chamber of Commerce and the city of Fountain Valley present the State of the City and the State of the Chamber at a special January luncheon. This annual MARY PARSONS event gives us the opportunity to update residents and businesses of Fountain Valley on the past year’s activities, and a look forward into 2016. Mayor Cheryl Brothers will be presenting the updates for the city’s activities and progress for 2015.

It was also a very active year for the Chamber, and we look forward to sharing the details of the past year with you. This year’s luncheon takes place on Tuesday, Jan. 26, at the Mile Square Golf Course banquet room. All are invited to attend to hear a recap of last year, and what is taking place in our city for the coming year. The cost for the luncheon is $25 per person. Please RSVP at the Chamber of Commerce office, (714) 962-3822. Looking ahead, April will mark the 50th anniversary for the Fountain Valley Chamber of Commerce. We are excited about some of the programs we recently initiated not only for the businesses in our community but to also introduce the residents of Fountain Valley to the various businesses in town. We will be sharing more of that throughout the year as we celebrate our 50th anniversary. Visit the Chamber online anytime at www.FVChamber.com.

City misses water conservation goal in November

Fountain Valley failed to meet its 20-percent water conservation goal for the month of November, hitting only a 17 percent savings over the same month in 2013. But there’s some good news: We still have the ability to meet the target of a 20 percent water use reduction in time for the February deadline. How? City officials are asking residents to voluntarily 24

water no more than one day per week. Post cards were mailed out last week, asking residents and businesses to voluntarily water no more than one day per week between Nov. 1, 2015 and March 12, 2016. If you or someone you know has made the change, let City Hall know. They’ll provide a yard sign letting neighbors know you’re doing your part. If you have questions, call the Public Works Department at (714) 593-4433.

You are a masterpiece By STEVE SCHULTZ Fountain Valley Living Magazine

A

s the college art students anxiously waited for their final exam, their professor handed each of them a little square piece of paper and said, “If you can correctly judge which painting your square was cut from you will get an STEVE SCHULTZ A. You have 30 seconds and then pass your answers forward.” The students quickly took guesses on trying to accurately label what they had in their hand. Every student guessed wrong and all got F’s on

“You are not your mistakes or your achievements. You are not an occupation, and you are not your worst day. You are a masterpiece from God.” STEVE SCHULTZ FVHS English teacher

their final except for one student who got an A. Here was his answer: “Art is not created to be judged, but appreciated. To even attempt to guess which painting this little piece came from is not only foolish, but an insult to art itself. For we don’t need to know what it is called. We just need to know that it’s art and be in awe of what it is and not look for what it is missing.” Just like we should not expect art students to be able to accurately identify the whole of a painting from only seeing a little piece of it, we should not be so foolish and insulting to think we know the whole complexity of a person because of the little piece

we’ve seen of them. How much of our true selves do we ever really let others see in the first place? We must remember that we cannot love someone and judge someone simultaneously. Everyone has a piece of them we don’t like. Too often we act like that piece is the whole painting. And that is hypocritical and wrong. When you label someone you limit them. The artist Rumi wrote, “You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean in a drop.” A piece of the artist is left inside every piece of art. We are all art. We are not our titles. You are not your mistakes or your achievements. You

are not an occupation and you are not your worst day. You are a masterpiece from God. John Wooden always used to say, “Make each day your masterpiece.” You do that in two ways: first, by seeing yourself as a divine masterpiece and remembering every masterpiece has flaws and that does not prevent it from being celebrated in awe. And secondly, you make each day your masterpiece by choosing to see the piece of the Master in you and giving peace to others by making visible the piece of God in them.

Look back:

Fast foods we grew up with in Fountain Valley ... (and lived to tell about it)

Deep-fried burrito heaven: Taco de Carlos Fountain Valley, Calif. 92708

By KRISTAL SEEDEN Fountain Valley Living Magazine

Mexican fast food restaurants have been making the news in Fountain Valley, with the revival of Naugles and more recently with the closure of Taco Bell at Bushard Street and Talbert Avenue. It also conjures up a few memories for us about Taco de Carlos. The Mexican fast-food eatery was home to deep-fried California burritos, Ortega hamburgers and apple empanadas. An offshoot of Carl’s Jr., Taco de Carlos’ first location opened in 1972, when Carl Karcher Enterprises decided to join the successful boom of Mexican fast-food places—like Taco Bell, Del Taco and Naugles—which were all newly popular at the time. At its peak, the chain had 17 locations—one of them being at Brookhurst and Warner in Fountain Valley. The restaurant’s logo featured a Carl’s Jr. star wearing a sombrero and holding a soda and a taco. In a post on his blog, www.octhen.com, local blogger Steve Johnson reminisced about the restaurants, inspiring comments about the old Taco de Carlos locations. “Loved that humongous taco they had!” one commentor wrote. Another commented, “I used to go to the one off Warner and Brookhurst at lunch from Los Amigos ... I would buy the fried burrito (way before their time) cuz it was easy to eat and drive at the same time... couldn’t be late for 5th period!” Sadly, Taco de Carlos quietly went away in the early 1980s when all the locations were sold off. Since Naugles has made a huge local comeback, is Taco de Carlos far behind?
